01:11 AM gloops: Police tell BBC News they “cannot discount the possibility that there may have been no drone at all”.
01:14 AM gloops: what??
01:28 AM ziper: lsd in the water
01:58 AM gloops: well, im going to have a couple of hours on my bandsaw project today, changing pulleys to reduce speed, if this doesnt work ill buy a bigger motor
01:59 AM gloops: according to the bandsaw heads, 1 hp should drive this fine, but it isnt
02:35 AM Deejay: moin
02:44 AM XXCoder: gloops: usually when nobody made eye contact with it, just radar register
03:00 AM gloops: well thats some blunder to make lol, could have been a falcon hovering or anything
03:01 AM XXCoder: falcon is invisible to radar.
03:02 AM XXCoder: if its NOT a drone, likely its artifict of error or maybe metal balloon
03:03 AM gloops: they did find a damaged drone nearby apparently
03:15 AM Deejay: ufo!
03:15 AM XXCoder: yeah it turned into damaged drone before it was found
03:15 AM XXCoder: its a way to avoid being truly discovered
03:15 AM XXCoder: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LAIPnLQnmQw nice restore video
04:27 AM XXCoder: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANsqM0tuXNo another good omne
04:33 AM XXCoder: im paying him $1 monthly now
04:33 AM XXCoder: awesome
04:36 AM XXCoder: melting copper coins holding it on hand - with "starlite" as protection. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dT1dSs988cY
04:48 AM * Loetmichel just found an older video of me driving my convertible... MAN do i need to buy a new one this summer. and is it remotely possible that i drive like an ass? -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ERJ9QSWRE58
05:01 AM syyl: i hope fragalot gets his parcel today
05:01 AM syyl: :D
05:02 AM XXCoder: whats he getting
05:02 AM syyl: a christmas gift :D
05:02 AM XXCoder: nice
05:02 AM syyl: some stones
05:02 AM XXCoder: your family jewels? :P
05:02 AM XXCoder: ;)
05:03 AM syyl: lol
05:03 AM XXCoder: thats one of stuff I wanna try milling, rocks
05:03 AM XXCoder: though need very high rpm cooling and special tools
05:03 AM syyl: there are some grades of stone/rock that can be milled with normal carbide tools
05:03 AM syyl: soapstone for example
05:04 AM syyl: and slate
05:04 AM XXCoder: im thinking cermtic
05:04 AM syyl: Macor!
05:04 AM XXCoder: though not with my machine it'd have to be better maybe dunno
05:04 AM syyl: but its bloody expensive
05:04 AM XXCoder: it would need so much water
05:05 AM XXCoder: and water = rust
05:05 AM syyl: i cut a bunch of marcor ceramic at work
05:05 AM XXCoder: most of machine is alum but theres some metals that can rust
05:05 AM syyl: its interesting - can be cut with hss and carbide, even dry
05:05 AM syyl: turning, milling, drilling and tapping work without a problem
05:14 AM miss0r: Marry christmas ect.
05:14 AM XXCoder: merry xmas
05:15 AM miss0r: kids & wife is asleep... :D Now I have do some milling - I'm making a new steering relay bracket for the landy
05:15 AM miss0r: :)
05:15 AM * miss0r is feeling the christmas spirit
05:16 AM XXCoder: starry night milling eh heh
05:16 AM XXCoder: if i tried that there'd be knocks on door and it would go unanswered lol
05:16 AM miss0r: hehe
05:16 AM miss0r: Nah, its noon here
05:17 AM miss0r: Even if I did the starry night milling, it would be no problem. The shop is quite sound proof
05:17 AM XXCoder: nice
05:18 AM XXCoder: 3 am here
05:18 AM miss0r: hehe
05:20 AM miss0r: part one: "What should the part look like?" part two: "What does the stock I have allow for?"...
05:20 AM * Loetmichel imagines miss0r in green clothing with a pointy green hat and red/white striped socks... and pointy ears... giggling and singing christmas carols wile jumping around the shop and operating 5 machines at once ;)
05:20 AM miss0r: Now it looks such :D
05:21 AM miss0r: Hey! I don't like pointy hats.. :) Otherwise it is spot on :D
05:21 AM miss0r: you forgot about the overgrown beard
05:21 AM XXCoder: better giggling with pointy hat than on shelf and watching
05:21 AM XXCoder: big brother elf
05:23 AM miss0r: hehe. I need to do this bracket for the landy soon. The steering relay can move a little, and that is causing some backlash in the steering, which is otherwise damn tight.
05:23 AM miss0r: Almost can't feel it is an old push bar system
05:26 AM jthornton: morning
05:27 AM miss0r: mornin
05:27 AM XXCoder: hey
05:27 AM XXCoder: miss0r: car part? or truck whatever?
05:28 AM miss0r: It is a part for the car, yeah
05:28 AM miss0r: a 1972 series three 88" land rover
05:28 AM gloops: well i got a hole to drill for a retaining pin for a pulley, that will reduce rpm by 50%, if that dont work its another motor
05:29 AM miss0r: gloops: o_0 you have something spinning quite freely on a shaft there? :)
05:29 AM gloops: yeah i just bored out a pulley to fit a motor spindle
05:30 AM gloops: 10ft of bandsaw blade running very nice, but no cutting torque
05:30 AM miss0r: can you hear the motor bog down?
05:30 AM miss0r: or could you tell it was still spinning freely? :)
05:31 AM gloops: it slows down pretty quick when force applied
05:31 AM miss0r: the blade, sure. but what about the motor?
05:31 AM gloops: well i only tried it once, tbh i didnt check belt was slipping but it did sound like the motor stopped
05:32 AM gloops: i was so pissed off at the time i just pulled the plug lol
05:32 AM miss0r: well. if the motor stops, the pin won't do you much good realy
05:32 AM gloops: oh no, its a smaller pulley - just locking it with a pin
05:33 AM gloops: ive been looking for a 1hp motor local, finally found one but its 2800 rpm
05:33 AM miss0r: ahh indeed :]
05:33 AM gloops: the original motor for this was 1350 rpm - hence having torque problems - well i hope the speed is the reason
05:34 AM miss0r: For a second there I thought you were experiencing a senior moment :D
05:34 AM miss0r: "Speed fixes everything" - Clarksson
05:34 AM gloops: if my calculations are correct ive reduced rpm by half, so that should get me the original torque back?
05:35 AM miss0r: depends on the hp of the original motor
05:35 AM gloops: was the same thereabouts
05:35 AM miss0r: In that case it should land you roughly in the same torque
05:35 AM gloops: or it could be i just bought a crap motor lol
05:36 AM miss0r: hehe. You are about to find out :D
05:36 AM gloops: yeah in about 15 minutes or so
05:36 AM gloops: last chance before xmas
05:36 AM miss0r: anyway.. I'm on the mill. I will be back to see the results here
05:36 AM gloops: yeah im going back to it
05:42 AM SpeedEvil: When carbon fibre is too hard.
05:42 AM SpeedEvil: https://mobile.twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1077106553189093376/photo/1
05:42 AM SpeedEvil: Stainless steel starship. (test vehicle)
05:43 AM SpeedEvil: Usable strength/weight of full hard stainless at cryo is slightly better than carbon fiber, room temp is worse, high temp is vastly better
06:17 AM gloops: right, i got me a bandsaw
06:18 AM XXCoder: welcomed back
06:18 AM gloops: thanks lol
06:19 AM miss0r: it worked, eh?
06:20 AM gloops: yep, doesnt slow down now - well i can push a six inch log into it freehand and nothing slows
06:20 AM miss0r: nice
06:20 AM miss0r: congrats
06:20 AM gloops: i had every confidence in that, just a slight oversight
06:20 AM gloops: in the heat of the moment
06:21 AM miss0r: :)
06:21 AM SpeedEvil: And you only now have one hand
06:21 AM gloops: yes ill have to be careful with this, easily chop a daydreaming arm or head off
06:22 AM jthornton: gloops: got a photo of the bandsaw?
06:22 AM gloops: but will be operating by pushing from behind the blade
06:22 AM gloops: i promise i will get some photos when ive tidied up around it lol
06:23 AM jthornton: I'd rather see it in it's natural state :)
06:24 AM gloops: id rather you didnt lol
06:24 AM jthornton: lol
06:25 AM gloops: its basically just a bandsaw, chop the back out of it so you got 2 ends, weld a 100mm box section to connect them at the desired distance
06:25 AM gloops: some testing to go yet but its cutting, 2 car jacks lower and raise cut
06:26 AM SpeedEvil: Car jacks, for 6" ?
06:26 AM gloops: lifts about 16 inch
06:26 AM gloops: nah 14 inch i think
06:28 AM gloops: i might go on to ad either chain or screws to travel it, with a hand to turn
06:28 AM gloops: handle
06:29 AM SpeedEvil: ah
06:29 AM jthornton: that's how my neighbors saw mill works, two acme screws and a hand crank with a chain to couple them IIRC
06:30 AM gloops: yeah something like that would be worth adding if all else works well
06:30 AM gloops: dont really want to be pushing it through
07:23 AM * jthornton gives up using linux mint as a motion eye server and install ubuntu server 16
07:24 AM XXCoder: whats difference that make it not work?
07:25 AM jthornton: dunno, can't install motioneye on it so I did have motioneye installed on ubuntu server before I swapped pc's
07:27 AM XXCoder: not bad
07:30 AM jthornton: putzing around with it this morning didn't get any chicken programming done lol
07:46 AM Net|: https://netpipe.ca/?page_id=1683 first dvd print
09:54 AM Deejay: re
09:56 AM JT-Shop2: er
09:56 AM Deejay: yo guys :)
10:00 AM * Deejay wishes nices christmas days to everyone
10:06 AM fragalot: syyl_: package arrived, just in time to pop it under the tree :-) thanks!
04:23 PM Deejay: gn8
04:24 PM Tom_L: seems you had more to say than anyone today
04:47 PM jthornton: pretty quiet day around here...
04:54 PM Tom_L: a little too quiet
04:55 PM XXCoder: quuuiet
04:55 PM XXCoder: merry xmas
04:59 PM XXCoder: "nothing is stirring, not even a mouse"
05:03 PM roycroft: hi, folks, if anyone is around
05:03 PM roycroft: a 4" dial caliper that i've had for many years has finally given up the ghost
05:03 PM roycroft: it was a cheap imported model
05:04 PM XXCoder: what went wrong?
05:04 PM roycroft: i need to replace it, as it's such a convenient size (it fits in a pocket well)
05:04 PM roycroft: it's gotten jumpy
05:04 PM roycroft: and it's making noises when tracking
05:04 PM XXCoder: sigh same as my nice one it failed certification due to that
05:04 PM roycroft: i'm sure there's grit and crap in it
05:04 PM roycroft: anway
05:04 PM roycroft: it was cheap
05:04 PM roycroft: but now that i need to replace it i'm thinking of getting a digital one
05:05 PM XXCoder: well maybe look for used mitoyoto on ebay or something
05:05 PM roycroft: if for no other reason, because i'm doing almost as much metric stuff as american customary stuff
05:05 PM XXCoder: dial since digital is VERY often faked
05:05 PM roycroft: and a digital one would do both
05:05 PM roycroft: well
05:05 PM XXCoder: fakies drain batteries pretty bad
05:05 PM roycroft: i'm not going to get one off ebay
05:05 PM roycroft: because about 99% of the "mitutoyo" ones on ebay are fakes
05:06 PM roycroft: i mean, there's no way you're going to get a brand new mitutoyo for $9.99, or even $29.99
05:06 PM roycroft: so the question is
05:06 PM roycroft: i can get a genuine mitutoyo for about $130
05:06 PM roycroft: and i can also get one the same length for about $400
05:06 PM roycroft: what's the difference?
05:06 PM roycroft: besides $270
05:07 PM XXCoder: never saw a $400 caliper, only $130 or so and $10,000
05:08 PM roycroft: https://www.amazon.com/Mitutoyo-500-195-30-Advanced-Absolute-Digital/dp/B07MGK1865/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1545692771&sr=8-3&keywords=mitutoyo+digital+caliper+4%22
05:08 PM roycroft: that's the cheap one
05:09 PM roycroft: i don't need remote readout or any other fancy features
05:09 PM roycroft: i don't need it to be submersable
05:09 PM roycroft: or shock proof
05:09 PM roycroft: i just want simple, accurate, reliable
05:09 PM XXCoder: indeed me too
05:10 PM roycroft: and yes, i could go get a plastic one from harbor freight that will actually be fairly accurate
05:10 PM roycroft: but it will cost me $30 + a new battery every time i use it
05:10 PM XXCoder: i have mitoyoto dial and digitial caliper
05:10 PM roycroft: i have a starrett 6" dial caliper
05:10 PM roycroft: and i like it
05:10 PM roycroft: but it's too big to be pocket size
05:10 PM XXCoder: mitoyoto digitial mic and 1" 1950s starret mic
05:10 PM XXCoder: love em
05:11 PM roycroft: the one i linked to measures absolute capacitance, so it won't lose pulses if you move it too fast
05:12 PM roycroft: that seems a very important feature
05:13 PM XXCoder: none of mine have ever lost position (ignoring very shitty china one i got first)
05:13 PM roycroft: hmm, amazon warehouse have one in like new condition for $93.13
05:13 PM roycroft: i don't mind getting one like that - it comes in the original packaging, has full warranty
05:13 PM roycroft: but it's a return
05:13 PM XXCoder: sometimes "like new" = new when i dropped it
05:14 PM roycroft: yeah, but if it comes with full warranty i could get it fixed
05:14 PM roycroft: and since it's from amazon i can also always return it, questions asked, but no answer wrong
05:14 PM XXCoder: i learned the lession of precision measuring not liking concerete floor hard lol
05:14 PM XXCoder: paid $70 to get it repaired. works fine since
05:15 PM roycroft: i dropped my starrett once
05:15 PM roycroft: it hit a stall mat, not a concrete floor
05:15 PM roycroft: but the needle moved a bit
05:15 PM roycroft: starrett charged me $62 to repair and recertify it
05:16 PM XXCoder: ow but cheaper than new
05:16 PM roycroft: that's fine - it would cost me $220 to replace
05:17 PM roycroft: so that "low end" mitutoyo would probably be just fine?
05:17 PM XXCoder: whats your user case anyway
05:17 PM XXCoder: ie whats you use it
05:17 PM XXCoder: for
05:18 PM XXCoder: (besides olvious)
05:18 PM roycroft: i don't do real precision stuff with them
05:18 PM roycroft: i use micrometers when i need to dial things in super accurate
05:18 PM roycroft: quick measurements
05:18 PM XXCoder: then it should be fine yeah
05:18 PM roycroft: i like something i can travel with
05:18 PM roycroft: yeah, i'm kind of weird
05:18 PM XXCoder: who isnt
05:18 PM roycroft: when i go to the fastener store i like to bring a little dial caliper with me
05:18 PM ziper: guys i know this is a stupid question but i have to ask. is there any reason why a CNC lathe part has to be circular in cross section
05:19 PM roycroft: because folks always pull fasteners out of the bins and toss them back in the wrong place
05:19 PM roycroft: so i like to measure my stuff as i'm picking it
05:19 PM roycroft: no reason at all, ziper
05:19 PM XXCoder: honestly for that use you could get away with basic vernier
05:19 PM roycroft: yeah, well i like to do semi-precise stuff with it
05:20 PM ziper: how do you index the spindle to the location of the tool?
05:20 PM roycroft: i use a dial caliper way more than a micrometer on the mill
05:20 PM XXCoder: yeah that one would work fine (one you linked to)
05:20 PM XXCoder: i'd suggest buy from say MSI or something
05:20 PM XXCoder: better warranty AND for sure its real one
05:20 PM XXCoder: and maybe small price increase
05:21 PM roycroft: msi?
05:21 PM roycroft: or msc?
05:21 PM XXCoder: hmm latter i think
05:21 PM roycroft: if i buy from msc i'd probably pay $50 more
05:21 PM roycroft: if enco were still around i could probably get it for $10 less
05:22 PM roycroft: but msc shitcanned enco after they bought them
05:22 PM roycroft: then promised me the would not jack the prices up
05:22 PM roycroft: then promptly jacked the prices up
05:22 PM XXCoder: 0-150 mm one $138
05:22 PM XXCoder: 0-200mm just under 200
05:23 PM roycroft: i need 0-100mm
05:23 PM roycroft: oh, there is an msi
05:23 PM roycroft: "msi viking gage"
05:23 PM roycroft: is that the outfit you're talking about?
05:24 PM XXCoder: i dont know how good SPI is but i found 6" one for $50
05:24 PM XXCoder: https://www.mscdirect.com/product/details/44706968
05:24 PM roycroft: they have the 100mm one for $116
05:24 PM XXCoder: looking for 100mm
05:24 PM roycroft: spi are in between shite and good
05:24 PM roycroft: i might as well get mitutoyo
05:25 PM XXCoder: msi search dont do boolean. bah
05:25 PM XXCoder: yeah
05:25 PM XXCoder: btw $10,000 one i wasnt joking. used it 3 times lol
05:25 PM XXCoder: it was over a meter long
05:26 PM roycroft: oh, it looks like the one i linked to doesn't have a depth bar
05:26 PM XXCoder: yet retains +- .0005" as usual
05:26 PM roycroft: hmm
05:26 PM roycroft: i use the depth bar all the time on my dial calipers
05:26 PM roycroft: $193.40 for one with a depth bar
05:26 PM roycroft: oh, wait, it does have a depth bar
05:26 PM roycroft: ok
05:27 PM roycroft: aah, the one for $193.50 has an spd output
05:27 PM roycroft: spc
05:27 PM roycroft: i don't need that at all
05:27 PM jthornton: someone need a digital caliper?
05:27 PM roycroft: i do
05:28 PM roycroft: well, i'd like one
05:28 PM jthornton: I have some extras
05:28 PM roycroft: 100mm/4"?
05:28 PM jthornton: https://mesaus.com/index.php?route=product/category&path=80
05:28 PM jthornton: all 6"
05:28 PM roycroft: my years old 4" dial caliper just bit the dust
05:28 PM roycroft: i need 4"
05:28 PM roycroft: so i can stick it in my pocket and travel with it
05:28 PM jthornton: no 4" ones sorry only 6"
05:28 PM roycroft: 6" is too awkward for that
05:29 PM roycroft: i might be interested in a 6" as well though, but not right now
05:29 PM XXCoder: roycroft: ohh found good one for you https://amzn.to/2Ai69R0
05:29 PM roycroft: fowler is a big step up from harbor freight
05:29 PM jthornton: it will be there till it's gone :)
05:29 PM roycroft: and you're not asking much more than harbor freight price
05:30 PM jthornton: oh wait I have a brass 4" caliper somewhere
05:30 PM roycroft: are you doing free super-saver shipping? :)
05:30 PM jthornton: shipping is on you
05:31 PM roycroft: if i were getting a vernier caliper i'd get a shiny brass one
05:31 PM roycroft: that one would be fine for verifying bolt measurements at the hardware store
05:31 PM roycroft: but i do need to use it for other, more precise things
05:31 PM XXCoder: ya was kidding on that link lol
05:31 PM XXCoder: a whole do,llar lol
05:32 PM XXCoder: wtf theres $1 digitial ones too
05:32 PM roycroft: and they're worth a whole dollar, i'm sure
05:33 PM XXCoder: "BETTER LOOKING,SMOOTH SLIDING AND ACCURATE RESULT:Finely polished stainless steel frame gives a better texture and quality, knurled thumb roller and locking screw ensure smooth sliding and accurate positioning in use. Moreover, with its 5 minutes Auto shut off function, this will save battery life and remembers position when turned off. "
05:33 PM XXCoder: lol
05:33 PM XXCoder: fancy discription
05:33 PM XXCoder: i'd put in "its $1 caliper whats you expect?"
05:34 PM roycroft: i'll check in when i'm ready for a 150mm/6" one, jthornton, and see if you still have any
05:34 PM roycroft: unless i like the smaller mitutoyo so much i'll want another mitutoyo
05:35 PM roycroft: they're claiming an average of 3.5 years battery life
05:35 PM roycroft: which is way better than the harbor freight units that have a 3.5 hour battery life
05:35 PM XXCoder: lol yeah because those dont sleep properly
05:35 PM XXCoder: it turns off display but rest dont turn off
05:35 PM XXCoder: fake mitoyoto is same
05:36 PM XXCoder: mine tend to last a year or 2, because I use it so often
05:36 PM jthornton: wow that is a short battery life
05:37 PM XXCoder: my digitial mic in contrast I only changed battery once in 4 years
05:37 PM roycroft: well i think i'll probably get that little mitutoyo
05:37 PM XXCoder: i'd recommand it yeah
05:37 PM roycroft: it's a good price for a fairly precise instrument
05:38 PM XXCoder: jthornton: I love my 1950s mic so much I rarely use my mitoyoto digitial mic lol
05:40 PM jthornton: my eyes are not that good anymore so I need digital mic's that's the reason the other mic's are for sale
05:42 PM roycroft: i just got new contacts, and i'm back to 20/15 vision, which is nice
05:42 PM roycroft: however, i've developed mild cararacts
05:42 PM roycroft: which makes seeing things in low light conditions a bit difficult
05:43 PM roycroft: my eye doctor says that the cataracts are on the low end of normal for my age - not bad at all
05:43 PM roycroft: but my eyes will never be 20 again
05:44 PM XXCoder: mines not too bad 20/30 and 20/20 with minor agasism
05:44 PM XXCoder: very good eyesight for my age
05:44 PM XXCoder: night vision is insanely good unfortnately... lights really mess with my vision making driving bit hard
05:46 PM jthornton: I always like the line "I made your eyes" from Blade Runner
05:46 PM roycroft: well, i should get back to the shop for a bit before it's time to get ready for christmas eve stuff
05:46 PM roycroft: happy holidays, all!
05:46 PM jthornton: yep time for me to cook some tacos
05:46 PM jthornton: happy holidays
05:46 PM XXCoder: happy ho;lidays :)
05:47 PM jthornton: XXCoder: you off all week or just for the holidays?
05:47 PM XXCoder: holidays
05:48 PM XXCoder: 2 day off this week, next week 2 days off again
05:48 PM XXCoder: so in 2 weeks I will only work 2 days
05:48 PM XXCoder: approx anyway
05:49 PM jthornton: you work 4 nights a week?
05:55 PM * jthornton puts on his chef hat
05:56 PM XXCoder: yeah 10 hour shifts
06:26 PM XXCoder: my solder board arrived! and 2 solder tubes
06:26 PM XXCoder: but still no projects and flux
06:29 PM renesis: theres usually flux in the solder '
06:29 PM XXCoder: yeah
06:29 PM XXCoder: just want to have flux also
06:31 PM MarcelineVQ: ye it's very helpful to have flux you can apply yourself
06:31 PM renesis: yeah its useful
06:31 PM XXCoder: cant do anything without kits arriving anyway
08:42 PM zeeshan: howdy :D
09:10 PM Rab: zeeshan, greetz
09:11 PM Rab: https://i.imgur.com/uFuePLc.gifv
09:12 PM zeeshan: yours?
09:13 PM Rab: 'Fraid not.
09:14 PM Rab: That's some sick CAM, or else hand coded.
09:21 PM renesis: cnc professor: what do you mean you cant code that its just geometry wtf
09:22 PM zeeshan: ;]
09:23 PM renesis: triangle is the only one one not immediately obvious to code
09:24 PM renesis: the circle just traces a full circle with a full C axis rev, thickness is initial cut angle
09:25 PM renesis: the S you just have to figure out the entry and exit slide and arc, then its same deal, C angle vs path is thickness
09:26 PM zeeshan: why bother
09:26 PM renesis: yeah the entry on the curve does a bit of a moonwalk to keep from cutting into the interior
09:26 PM zeeshan: when you can click a line and have code generated
09:26 PM zeeshan: ;p
09:27 PM renesis: because cam for that maybe doesnt exist or isnt affordable and the solutions turns out to be pretty simple
09:27 PM zeeshan: hsm
09:27 PM zeeshan: done!
09:27 PM renesis: anyway those types of paths suggest hand coding
09:28 PM zeeshan: id fire someone if they tried to hand code
09:28 PM renesis: for hot foam or youre saying to generate the code?
09:28 PM renesis: well right because you dont know the diff between modal and non modal words
09:29 PM zeeshan: o rly
09:29 PM renesis: if you had a list of coordinates to drill, you wouldnt just MDI the shit?
09:29 PM zeeshan: nah cause humans
09:29 PM zeeshan: easy to typo
09:29 PM renesis: same with CAM
09:29 PM zeeshan: if its just a 4 bolt pattern, not a big deal to do it with mdi
09:30 PM Rab: I'm trying to figure out if the S is a consistent width. If so, there's more to it.
09:30 PM zeeshan: but some of the parts we make have like 100+ holes
09:30 PM zeeshan: nice thing is when that part slightly changes
09:30 PM zeeshan: the code mostly updates
09:30 PM renesis: rab: theres not you just have to keep C the same angle vs the path
09:30 PM renesis: then it does a moonwalk to pull the cutter out without an arc'd end
09:34 PM renesis: doesnt look like hsm has foam cutter specific stuff
09:36 PM zeeshan: i'm trying to design a linear actuator for work
09:36 PM renesis: with protoculture?
09:36 PM zeeshan: frigging thing is looking like its going to be 28' long
09:37 PM zeeshan: im trying to decide whether i should just make the main beam out of 30' HSS
09:37 PM renesis: looks like RC plane types have 4-axis hot foam cutter software
09:37 PM zeeshan: or split it up into multiple sections
09:40 PM renesis: one of the projects at school used two stage air linear actuator, did like a foot, then another foot
09:40 PM renesis: telescopic cylinder or something
09:41 PM zeeshan: using a timing belt drive for this
09:41 PM zeeshan: makes sense for something that needs to move at around 60in/s over this span
09:41 PM zeeshan: really the only other thing i can think of is rack and pinion
09:42 PM renesis: rail gun w/ monster brake
09:42 PM zeeshan: haha
09:42 PM Rab: zeeshan, heard of this? https://www.bell-everman.com/products/linear-positioning/servobelt-linear-sbl
09:43 PM Rab: It uses two meshed belts, one adhered to a rigid beam, to counteract belt stretch.
09:44 PM renesis: what is meshed belts
09:44 PM renesis: like instead of a belt and sprocket?
09:45 PM Rab: Two timing belts, face to face, only coming apart where the motor engages: https://dc-us.resource.bosch.com/media/us/products_13/product_groups_1/linear_motion_technology/linear_motion_systems_1/sbl_linear_acuator/tabs-key-benefits_w238.jpg
09:46 PM renesis: oh neat
09:46 PM Rab: I thought Bell-Everman had it patented, but that's Bosch Rexroth...maybe they licensed it.
09:47 PM Rab: Anyway if I wanted a 30' belt drive, I'd seriously consider that concept.
09:48 PM zeeshan: looks like a pain in the butt to work on!
09:48 PM zeeshan: our typical design just has 2 pulleys end to end
09:48 PM zeeshan: with a linear rail in between... and a timing belt clamp
09:49 PM zeeshan: the challenge for this design is keeping dust out without using bellows or covers
09:49 PM zeeshan: telescoping covers that is
09:49 PM zeeshan: and possibly modular
09:49 PM Rab: Massive cnczone thread, various DIY efforts: https://www.cnczone.com/forums/linear-and-rotary-motion/59570-forum-29.html
09:49 PM zeeshan: so it can be shipped easy
09:49 PM Rab: zeeshan, how do you keep the belt from sagging?
09:50 PM zeeshan: pre-tension
09:50 PM zeeshan: we use belts with steel cords in them
09:50 PM zeeshan: im not being close minded
09:50 PM zeeshan: throw more of this at me
09:50 PM zeeshan: i'm at concept stage
09:51 PM zeeshan: you know whats cool about that double belt method
09:51 PM zeeshan: the dust cant get in between the teeth
09:51 PM Rab: yeah\
09:51 PM _unreal_: do you have dust collction?
09:51 PM zeeshan: not a big fan of the moving motor though
09:52 PM zeeshan: yes _unreal_
09:52 PM renesis: shrug, depends on load
09:52 PM zeeshan: but even with dust collection, drywall plants are pretty nasty
09:52 PM zeeshan: can get nasty
09:52 PM _unreal_: drywall plants?
09:53 PM zeeshan: yes
09:53 PM _unreal_: I have no idea what that means
09:53 PM zeeshan: gypsum board
09:53 PM renesis: the wall factory, _unreal_
09:55 PM zeeshan: rab
09:55 PM zeeshan: im watching the belt replacement video on this
09:55 PM zeeshan: that automatically means this mechanism is out
09:55 PM zeeshan: ;p
09:55 PM Rab: Another cool aspect is that there's virtually no tension on the inactive major portions of the belt. I think a 60' belt will need a fair amount of tension to have any control over position. But I don't know how precise this actuator needs to be.
09:56 PM zeeshan: +/- .015" plenty accurate
09:57 PM zeeshan: rab i'm looking at a design the senior engineer made like 12 years ago
09:57 PM zeeshan: he's got a 80mm wide belt
09:57 PM zeeshan: the travel length is 30'
09:57 PM zeeshan: i was on site a couplee weeks ago..
09:57 PM zeeshan: on our gantries the belt was whipping
09:58 PM zeeshan: it wasn't tensioned right..
09:58 PM zeeshan: i tensioned it, it didnt move at all
09:58 PM renesis: maybe loosens or stretches over time?
09:59 PM Rab: If there's functional prior art, that changes things. How often do the belts need to be serviced?
09:59 PM zeeshan: renesis: shouldnt
10:00 PM zeeshan: rab years!
10:00 PM zeeshan: Rab: i have 2 designs i know that work
10:00 PM zeeshan: but i think they can be improved.. i'm not a big fan of weldments
10:00 PM zeeshan: i like modular things so you can change them if needed
10:02 PM zeeshan: any other designs? :D
10:08 PM Rab: Bell-Everman is also responsible for this crazy thing, but I don't think it'll help you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Omd90UfgGv0
10:08 PM Rab: I really want to build one though.
10:10 PM zeeshan: haha
10:10 PM zeeshan: that is nuts!
10:14 PM CaptHindsight: typical linear servos
10:14 PM zeeshan: hi CaptHindsight
10:14 PM zeeshan: i need to come to this chat room more often ;[
10:15 PM zeeshan: i've been on my own trying to figure this stuff out!
10:15 PM CaptHindsight: there's not much talk of this in here
10:15 PM zeeshan: whats going on here lately?
10:15 PM CaptHindsight: mostly ballscrew driven machines for machining in here
10:16 PM CaptHindsight: oh lots of cooking
10:16 PM zeeshan: cant beat ball screws for precision
10:16 PM zeeshan: but for a plasma cutter or somethiung
10:16 PM zeeshan: belts would work well
10:16 PM CaptHindsight: political discussions, complaining etc
10:16 PM Rab: Chicken drama.
10:17 PM CaptHindsight: fowl drama :)
10:17 PM zeeshan: im trying to find the belt vid for you rab
10:18 PM zeeshan: found it
10:19 PM CaptHindsight: zeeshan: I was working on 5-axis CNC multicolor airbrush
10:20 PM Rab: I didn't realize until I saw the KAOS product page that there must be two carriages on a single stator track: https://www.bell-everman.com/images/kaos/kaos.png
10:20 PM zeeshan: cnc picasso?
10:20 PM zeeshan: :D
10:21 PM zeeshan: those igus energy chains
10:21 PM CaptHindsight: 3d part decoration (not in mold)
10:21 PM zeeshan: are SO cheap!
10:21 PM Rab: I assumed it was two separate motors...I think their early designs had a pair of belt stages.
10:21 PM zeeshan: i dont even know what is going on that pic
10:21 PM zeeshan: i see energy chains
10:21 PM zeeshan: and 3 rails
10:21 PM zeeshan: ;p
10:23 PM renesis: drive two X's and the Y just happens
10:23 PM zeeshan: theres 2 motors on the horizontal direction?
10:23 PM Rab: rite
10:23 PM renesis: i think so, just guessing
10:23 PM zeeshan: how can you tell
10:24 PM renesis: because thats how i would drive an arrangement like that
10:24 PM Rab: Except that it's like 1.5 linear motors.
10:24 PM renesis: i dunno why they would do it like that but i imagine it has to do with moving mass on the Y
10:25 PM zeeshan: duhh.. this is related to the video you posted.
10:25 PM flyback: zeeshan, BMCC
10:25 PM flyback: :)
10:25 PM flyback: merry xmas eh-hole
10:25 PM zeeshan: so when the two motors move at diff speeds that triggers the vertical axis
10:25 PM renesis: classic flyback
10:25 PM renesis: yeah
10:25 PM pfred1: I saw a vinyl cutter once the size of a basketball court
10:25 PM zeeshan: when they move at the same speed, then you translate only
10:25 PM flyback: hello renesis
10:25 PM flyback: BMCC
10:26 PM zeeshan: smart for pick and place
10:26 PM pfred1: the gantry on that thing was like 5 feet thick
10:26 PM CaptHindsight: how many year of biting CC's is this now on IRC?
10:26 PM flyback: 20
10:26 PM zeeshan: whats bmcc
10:27 PM flyback: BITE MY "CANUCK"...........................................................................................CANUCK!
10:27 PM CaptHindsight: time flys
10:27 PM cradek: ]
10:27 PM zeeshan: what does that even mean
10:27 PM zeeshan: lol
10:27 PM flyback: it doesn't mean anything
10:27 PM flyback: hahahaha
10:28 PM pfred1: it only has meaning if you're drunk on maple syrup
10:28 PM CaptHindsight: flyback has been obsessed with CC's for some time
10:28 PM flyback: https://www.facebook.com/CUNY.BMCC/
10:28 PM flyback: CUNY BMCC
10:29 PM CaptHindsight: Obsessive Offtopic Canuck Disorder, it's in the DSM go check honest
10:29 PM pfred1: we need to build a wall on the Canadian border so their cold stops sneaking down here
10:30 PM renesis: canadian border officers are cute
10:30 PM CaptHindsight: and protect them from US
10:30 PM CaptHindsight: and I'm all for a border wall on the north side of Texas
10:31 PM pfred1: fences make for good neighbors
10:31 PM renesis: capthindsight: literally nothing there
10:32 PM Tom_L: walls make better climbers
10:32 PM CaptHindsight: has Santa showed up by yous yet?
10:33 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.noradsanta.org/
10:33 PM pfred1: Tom_L if they can scale a 30 foot tall wall I say give them a shot
10:34 PM CaptHindsight: ohh ohh Santa is nearing Detroit
10:34 PM pfred1: I hope St. Nick is wel larmed
10:34 PM Tom_L: i'd rather see a few dozen gattling guns installed on the hilltops as a deterrent
10:34 PM zeeshan: Rab: https://youtu.be/rlMGKFxHe54?t=223
10:35 PM zeeshan: see the whip on the opposite side
10:35 PM Tom_L: alot cheaper too
10:35 PM zeeshan: only happens with not enough pretension
10:35 PM pfred1: Tom_L the barrier is just there to give border patrol time to get in position
10:36 PM CaptHindsight: zeeshan: then don't bring it to Chicago, lots of pretension down here :)
10:36 PM zeeshan: :D
10:38 PM CaptHindsight: hey wait, Google has santa over Deleware and Norad over Ohio, somethins fishy
10:38 PM CaptHindsight: fake Santa?
10:39 PM CaptHindsight: https://santatracker.google.com/intl/en/tracker.html
10:39 PM Rab: zeeshan, interesting.
10:47 PM CaptHindsight: zeeshan: drywall slicer?
10:48 PM Tom_L: wonder how often the bearings in those motors crap out
10:49 PM zeeshan: which motors
10:49 PM zeeshan: CaptHindsight: essentially lol
10:49 PM Tom_L: around 4:30
10:50 PM zeeshan: theyre are TEFC
10:51 PM zeeshan: but it is pretty rough for linear bearings to survive
10:51 PM zeeshan: especially they see direct dust all the time
10:51 PM zeeshan: that lifter platform that extends and retracts was already getting gummy
10:51 PM zeeshan: i need to make a dust deflector
10:51 PM zeeshan: they were running with poor dust collection for a while
10:52 PM CaptHindsight: whats making the annoying squeaking sound in the video?
10:52 PM CaptHindsight: as opposed to the non-annoying squeaking sound?
10:52 PM zeeshan: haha
10:53 PM zeeshan: i dunno prolly the saws
10:53 PM zeeshan: theres 2 saws, one that cross cuts and one that trims the edge
10:53 PM Tom_L: no sound here
10:53 PM CaptHindsight: I'd last about 10 minutes working there
10:54 PM zeeshan: haha i had to be there for 2 weeks!!!!!!!!
10:54 PM zeeshan: tuning that machine up
10:55 PM CaptHindsight: I'll play that for my neighbors next time they bring their yappy dog to work
10:55 PM zeeshan: haha
10:55 PM CaptHindsight: 110db
10:55 PM zeeshan: its funny, when the blades are brand new
10:55 PM zeeshan: you can barely hear it cutting
10:55 PM CaptHindsight: what, we are just working over here, whats the problem?
10:55 PM zeeshan: but 2 min later, they' sound exactly like the vid
10:57 PM Tom_L: are they toothed blades or more like a roller razor blade?
10:57 PM CaptHindsight: does the gypsum stick to the sides of the blades
10:57 PM Tom_L: i'd bet it does
10:57 PM zeeshan: theyre pretty much what you use in your table saw
10:58 PM zeeshan: nah, it pretty must turns into dust
10:58 PM zeeshan: and paper
10:58 PM zeeshan: majority of it is caught by the dust collection system
10:59 PM CaptHindsight: I'm supposed to be TIG brazing right now
10:59 PM CaptHindsight: but's xmas eve
11:00 PM zeeshan: what are you tig brazing
11:00 PM zeeshan: supposed to be that is
11:00 PM CaptHindsight: auto sheet metal
11:00 PM Tom_L: z, your lathe still sits idle?
11:00 PM pfred1: you need shield gas to TIG braze?
11:01 PM CaptHindsight: the holidays are all about finishing your car projects
11:01 PM zeeshan: Tom_L: yes
11:01 PM Tom_L: :(
11:01 PM zeeshan: haha
11:01 PM zeeshan: one day mate!
11:01 PM zeeshan: one day!
11:01 PM zeeshan: even my mill is apart
11:01 PM zeeshan: the horizontal tool changer is leaking
11:01 PM zeeshan: too many projects, little time ;[
11:02 PM CaptHindsight: i did manage to slow cook a 5lb rib eye roast
11:02 PM pfred1: well Merry Christmas
11:02 PM CaptHindsight: and make tacos
11:02 PM zeeshan: i've been spending wayyy to much time at work.. but i'm learning so its worth it
11:02 PM CaptHindsight: slept till 1pm
11:02 PM zeeshan: didnt work today?
11:02 PM zeeshan: i had to work today
11:03 PM CaptHindsight: spent 2 hours reading tech journals
11:03 PM Tom_L: i would have but i took it off
11:03 PM CaptHindsight: sent an email to India
11:04 PM CaptHindsight: told them it's xmas, will send the invoice in 48 hours
11:04 PM zeeshan: do you guys get the 26th off?
11:04 PM Tom_L: not me
11:04 PM zeeshan: its an official holiday here
11:04 PM zeeshan: 'boxing day'
11:04 PM zeeshan: lol
11:04 PM CaptHindsight: not usually, thats a Canadian thing
11:05 PM CaptHindsight: it depends on the employer here
11:05 PM Tom_L: yeah some give clear thru the 2nd
11:05 PM CaptHindsight: if xmas is on Wednesday then there is usually no extra day off
11:06 PM CaptHindsight: and others like Tom said, the week is off
11:06 PM CaptHindsight: was surprised the walmarts here closed at 6pm today
11:06 PM CaptHindsight: and closed all day tomorrow
11:07 PM Tom_L: first year for that afik
11:07 PM Tom_L: xmas day, yes
11:08 PM CaptHindsight: was doing some last minute supply shopping, most everything closed by 4pm today
11:09 PM CaptHindsight: zeeshan: so you get the 25th and 26th off every year?
11:09 PM zeeshan: yessir
11:10 PM zeeshan: i wish things were open!
11:10 PM zeeshan: i need some wood screws
11:10 PM CaptHindsight: is Canadian thanksgiving a big day?
11:11 PM zeeshan: yes it is
11:11 PM zeeshan: but i think in america its better
11:11 PM zeeshan: bigger
11:11 PM zeeshan: i was in the states for like 24 days.. drove to savannah, then new orleans
11:11 PM CaptHindsight: Boxing Day is ON only?!
11:11 PM zeeshan: why is all your food so big!!!!!!!!!!!!!
11:11 PM zeeshan: i had to keep remdining myself to order "small"
11:11 PM CaptHindsight: heh, have you seen the people?
11:12 PM CaptHindsight: zeeshan: keeps everyone slow moving, easier to catch
11:12 PM zeeshan: haha
11:13 PM CaptHindsight: yeah, you really see the difference down here with food size
11:14 PM CaptHindsight: everything is starting to look rundown now as well
11:14 PM zeeshan: theres a lot of people
11:14 PM zeeshan: thats for sure!
11:15 PM zeeshan: it's pretty crazy how you can keep so many people in such a huge amount of land
11:15 PM CaptHindsight: big people
11:15 PM zeeshan: all under one country
11:15 PM zeeshan: i like it
11:15 PM CaptHindsight: when I come back after many days in Asia it shocks me
11:15 PM zeeshan: driving from savannah to orleans i took I10
11:16 PM zeeshan: near tallahasse... it was all blown apart
11:16 PM zeeshan: i think there was a hurricane that went through there
11:16 PM zeeshan: whats better? asia or usa
11:16 PM CaptHindsight: it's different
11:17 PM CaptHindsight: what I've noticed is that we all have good and bad, it's just whats good and bad is different
11:17 PM CaptHindsight: and how much of either
11:18 PM zeeshan: best place is in the woods!
11:18 PM zeeshan: nice and quiet
11:18 PM CaptHindsight: Singapore is clean and safe but you get cained for chewing gum
11:19 PM zeeshan: ive heard that about them
11:19 PM zeeshan: kinda nuts how a simple thing here is a crime there
11:19 PM CaptHindsight: nice and quiet until you crave thai food or a concert
11:20 PM CaptHindsight: you get your face on a billboard in China now for jaywalking
11:20 PM CaptHindsight: -50 points and no high speed train for you
11:20 PM CaptHindsight: surveillance everywhere
11:21 PM zeeshan: wow
11:22 PM zeeshan: are you buying stuff from china for work?
11:22 PM CaptHindsight: Thailand is nice, except for the cavil wars and don't take a picture of a Buddha or a tattoo of one
11:22 PM CaptHindsight: had a factory there
11:22 PM CaptHindsight: the start of one
11:23 PM CaptHindsight: haven't been back to China for a couple of years
11:24 PM CaptHindsight: japan is nice, clean friendly, fun etc
11:24 PM CaptHindsight: but you're always an outsider
11:24 PM CaptHindsight: don't blow your nose in public
11:26 PM zeeshan: why?
11:26 PM CaptHindsight: there it's the equivalent of wiping your butt
11:28 PM CaptHindsight: and in China you have to dodge the hockers being shot right from the nostrils onto the sidewalk
11:29 PM zeeshan: eww
11:30 PM CaptHindsight: travel is fun
11:30 PM zeeshan: i like being a hermit
11:36 PM CaptHindsight: Merry Christmas and Happy Boxing Day?
11:36 PM CaptHindsight: what do you say on Boxing day?
11:37 PM zeeshan: haha not much
11:37 PM zeeshan: you're too busy shopping
11:37 PM CaptHindsight: so when do you exchange gifts there?
11:38 PM CaptHindsight: on Boxing Day?
11:44 PM zeeshan: no christmas
11:44 PM zeeshan: boxing day is our black friday
11:44 PM pfred1: that's when retailers try to rip yo uoff?
