12:59 AM XXCoder: ... he might have rediscovered starlite. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqR4_UoBIzY
01:11 AM XXCoder: half cup corn starch, baking soda 10% of corn starch, then elmer glue till like clay for starlike like material
01:12 AM XXCoder: its quite organic though so if used for house isulation rats would eat house
01:14 AM XXCoder: yo
01:14 AM XXCoder: gloops: check this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqR4_UoBIzY
01:17 AM gloops: my mrs could have given him the recipe for that XXCoder lol
01:17 AM XXCoder: lol
01:17 AM XXCoder: honestly its surpising that he figured it
01:17 AM XXCoder: wonder if thats how orginial inventor thought of it
01:17 AM XXCoder: among same lines as video maker did
01:20 AM gloops: they are ingredients used in a few hacks in modelling and things
01:22 AM XXCoder: it'd be better if it was not organic
01:22 AM XXCoder: rats would eat that stuff up if it was part of isulation for house
01:23 AM gloops: yes, probably get broken down by bacteria eventually too
01:24 AM XXCoder: i wonder if theres inorganic versions of both
01:24 AM XXCoder: so it wouldnt be eaten or whatever
01:27 AM gloops: cant think of anything that turns to carbon the same
01:29 AM XXCoder: i suppose could denature it in such way that nothing wanna eat oit
01:29 AM XXCoder: also stabilizing against decay
01:29 AM XXCoder: o course such additions would have to not inferne with special properity
01:31 AM gloops: could be sealed inside a film, like in rolls
01:31 AM XXCoder: sure surround it with flammable film
01:31 AM gloops: but if it were stabilised, could even just spray it on
01:32 AM XXCoder: indeed
01:34 AM gloops: ive brought my furnace up to the garage, not intending to use it yet but will be getting ready
01:34 AM XXCoder: metal pours?
01:34 AM gloops: i need a liner i forget what they use now, fire clay works ok i think
01:34 AM XXCoder: fire bricks
01:34 AM XXCoder: theres few forms of it
01:35 AM gloops: yeah just for melting aluminium, if i use only charcoal there wont be any smoke so shouldnt get any complaints
01:35 AM XXCoder: from literal bricks to what looks like cotton
01:36 AM gloops: im a facebook group for backyard casting, they use various stuff, surprising how a thin roll of something can keep the heat in
01:36 AM gloops: ill have to have another look not been watching it for ages
01:36 AM XXCoder: from what I see, "starlite" can handle ANY heat, but direct fire causes it to char
01:36 AM XXCoder: so i wonder if it'd be best as backing
01:37 AM XXCoder: like heat -> fire wool -> fire brick -> starlite
01:37 AM XXCoder: then finally metal casing to hold it all together
01:37 AM gloops: yeah being a tougher barrier maybe
01:37 AM gloops: behind
01:38 AM XXCoder: it would be interesting
01:38 AM XXCoder: it would contain heat so well that you can touch outsides easily
01:39 AM XXCoder: i wonder if it would fail if its containing molten alum
01:39 AM gloops: someone gave me a big gas bottle that had been converted to a stove, with door and fire grate, damper and insulated stainless chimney, only had a fire in it a couple times
01:39 AM XXCoder: make a cup of starlite then pour some alum in it
01:39 AM XXCoder: see if it stays cool outside
01:39 AM gloops: the moisture might cause problems
01:39 AM XXCoder: yeah
01:40 AM XXCoder: maybe steel cup outsides covered with starlite
01:40 AM XXCoder: see if you can pour by hand lol (i wouldnt! splash)
01:40 AM XXCoder: but can test theory by just touching. no need to actualluy attempt to pour
01:42 AM gloops: that would be useful if possible though
01:42 AM XXCoder: no water version would be great though
01:45 AM gloops: there was another contact with Ichsguckslive the other day, dont know if you saw XXCoder
01:46 AM XXCoder: no havent seen
01:46 AM XXCoder: him or his grandson?
01:46 AM gloops: someone from germany saying he worked in a school and had found some discs with cnc tutorials - 160 or so
01:46 AM XXCoder: ohh hope that gets uploaded
01:47 AM gloops: sound very much like Ichs work, the guy even typed like Ichs lol
01:47 AM XXCoder: i found his videos unwatchable but i know many people have had found videos usefyk
01:48 AM gloops: i used to be picky with tutorials, i never bothered with any that werent really clear and well made - until i started the cnc lol
01:49 AM gloops: there are times when absolutely anything you can find might be of help - i got some vital bits of info from Ichs vids
01:49 AM XXCoder: theres guy making really nice vudeos oin cnc and linuxcnc
01:50 AM XXCoder: he makes video ionce a month or so I think or slowet
01:50 AM gloops: would have found it elsewhere eventually but was useful at the time - especially as he was here to quiz if need be
01:56 AM rue_shop1: anyone watch hour counters on their machines?
01:57 AM XXCoder: hour counters?
01:57 AM XXCoder: you mean uptime?
01:57 AM XXCoder: 23:55:49 up 76 days, 22:45, 1 user, load average: 1.13, 1.01, 1.09 lol
01:59 AM rue_shop1: no machine running hour counters
01:59 AM rue_shop1: for things like "after 10000 hours, tighten the bolts"
01:59 AM XXCoder: ahh yeah work machines has it
01:59 AM XXCoder: but my hobby one nah
02:00 AM rue_shop1: dont know how many hours I had when the motor bushings failed
02:02 AM rue_shop1: I thought the brushes would fail first :)
02:02 AM rue_shop1: I suspect WD40 actually accelerated the wear
02:03 AM XXCoder: wd40 is not grease
02:03 AM XXCoder: its water displacer
02:04 AM rue_shop1: I suspect it displaced the oil in the bushing
02:05 AM gloops: i think its mostly naphtha - solvent that melts grease
02:12 AM CaptHindsight: though it would be nice if they counted down
02:12 AM XXCoder: just like a bomb
02:12 AM CaptHindsight: or a context
02:12 AM CaptHindsight: contest
02:12 AM XXCoder: yeah
02:13 AM XXCoder: one of machines at work has very nice list of mainatance stuff and they all have # of hours and progress bar
02:13 AM XXCoder: once it gets to 90% used it turns yellow and has warning mainatance needed
02:13 AM XXCoder: once 100% it wont run
02:15 AM Deejay: moin
02:16 AM gloops: like the service light on a car - nobody takes any notice
02:16 AM XXCoder: hey
02:16 AM XXCoder: more or less
02:17 AM CaptHindsight: pretty soon problem won't be
02:17 AM CaptHindsight: make you sit in self driving cars
02:17 AM XXCoder: if you dont make appointment for machine mainatance, it will schedule one for you
02:18 AM CaptHindsight: you rent from car service
02:18 AM CaptHindsight: you just pay
02:19 AM CaptHindsight: or if you still can buy it be like smartphones
02:20 AM CaptHindsight: will lose compatibility with direction service after a few years, for more better self obsolescent
02:27 AM gloops: well my 1 hp motor aint driving this bandsaw
02:27 AM gloops: bad luck but the only motor i could find local was 2800 rpm, the original was 1350 rpm
02:28 AM gloops: not enough cutting torque at that speed - but if i reduce the gearing to get same rpm on the spindle, i should get the torque back, right?
02:28 AM CaptHindsight: thats how gearing works
02:29 AM gloops: yes
02:29 AM CaptHindsight: it's not 100% efficient
02:29 AM gloops: either that or this is just a crap motor
02:29 AM CaptHindsight: you'll find out
02:29 AM gloops: every time i find out im wrong another day has passed
02:30 AM CaptHindsight: time or money
02:31 AM gloops: electrics is annoying for me, yet another magnificent mechanical build, foiled by the electrics
04:52 AM jthornton: morning
06:15 AM XXCoder: hey
06:34 AM jthornton: Yea I found a video card that meets both requirements A) it fits the motherboard and B) it works!
06:34 AM XXCoder: awesome :)
06:45 AM jthornton: now to find enough 6-32 stand offs to mount the motherboard
07:30 AM * Tom_L looks at jthornton's cnc lathe
07:35 AM jthornton: which one?
07:36 AM Tom_L: the one that will make more standoffs :)
07:37 AM jthornton: I have made standoffs on the CHNC before, but in this case I found a couple the right shape
07:37 AM XXCoder: get a turret cnc lathe ;)
07:37 AM XXCoder: make couple.. thousand
07:38 AM Tom_L: then trip over the box from now on...
07:38 AM XXCoder: nah sell what dont need
07:38 AM XXCoder: try pay off the fancy turret cnc lathe
07:40 AM jthornton: I need to find a source for M3 standoffs
07:41 AM jthornton: last time I ordered from aliexpress the sale failed
07:41 AM Tom_L: mmmm
07:41 AM Tom_L: https://www.aliexpress.com/wholesale?catId=0&initiative_id=SB_20181223053905&SearchText=m3+standoff
07:42 AM XXCoder: i so rarely have issues at aliexpress
07:42 AM XXCoder: low expections though
07:42 AM Tom_L: https://www.ebay.com/itm/180Pcs-M3-Male-Female-Brass-Standoff-Spacer-PCB-Board-Hex-Screws-Nut-Assortment/163058434032?hash=item25f70a3ff0:rk:5:pf:0&var
07:43 AM jthornton: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/CLOS-M3-Male-x-M3-Female-8mm-Long-Hexagonal-Brass-PCB-Standoffs-Spacers-50-Pcs/32597422765.html
07:43 AM XXCoder: my solder station is at seattle now. soon
07:43 AM XXCoder: but flux and solder is at unknown position (exited orgin country) so probably a while.'
07:44 AM jthornton: I need the brass standoffs for this https://mesaus.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=70&product_id=80
07:44 AM jthornton: which solder station did you get?
07:44 AM XXCoder: oh its just cheap silicine surface from aliexpress
07:44 AM XXCoder: i have no shop table or any surface i dont care about
07:45 AM XXCoder: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Heat-Resistant-Heat-Gun-BGA-Soldering-Station-Anti-Static-Repair-Insulation-Pad-Insulator-Pad-Maintenance-Platform/32948368633.html
07:45 AM XXCoder: mine is middle in price
07:46 AM XXCoder: oh prices changed, mine is now cheapest
07:47 AM XXCoder: also got this kit https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Three-Dimensional-3D-Christmas-Tree-LED-DIY-Kit-Red-Green-Yellow-LED-Flash-Circuit-Kit-Electronic/32744769456.html
07:47 AM XXCoder: fun
07:55 AM jthornton: yea saw the xmas tree
08:21 AM XXCoder: very safe power https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=czmDo6aE5eg
08:33 AM _unreal_: trying to figure out how to use the arduino with the cnc shield on linuxcnc?
08:33 AM XXCoder: typically we doint use arudinos here so dunno
08:34 AM _unreal_: makes no sense at all to not support it... I mean $25 ish for an arduino and cnc hat WITH 4 2amp bipolar motor controllers...
08:35 AM _unreal_: just add motors....
08:35 AM _unreal_: So far looks like the only thing linuxcnc openly supports is parallel port
08:35 AM XXCoder: ethernet with MESA
08:36 AM cpresser: usb ist to slow.
08:36 AM _unreal_: usb is not slow at all....
08:36 AM XXCoder: usb isnt slow, but not rt
08:36 AM XXCoder: so its useless
08:36 AM cpresser: sounds weird, but usb has no realtime guarantee; so controlling heavy machinery is stupid
08:36 AM gloops: cant guarantee realtime with usb
08:37 AM _unreal_: dont need realtime. simply a buffer command set
08:37 AM XXCoder: when person is tangled with machine you want it to STOP NOW!!!!
08:37 AM XXCoder: not when it feels ;like it
08:37 AM _unreal_: ?
08:38 AM cpresser: there are quite a few solutions out there that use usb; afaik mach4 does support most of them. but it works quite different than linuxcnc does
08:39 AM cpresser: the idea of linuxcnc is that the whole control is done on the host CPU; those usb boards/arduinos/whatever do the control on their own cpu
08:40 AM cpresser: its like asking to use railways with a car. you could adapt a car to run on tracks; but it defeats the initial purpose. just use roads instead :)
08:40 AM gloops: well im no expert, all i know is linuxcnc works fine for cnc machines, doesnt cost anything, simple, suits me
08:40 AM XXCoder: yeah more or less free
08:41 AM _unreal_: as is mach3, grbl and others
08:41 AM XXCoder: i say "more or less" because you want to build a pc specially for linuxcnc. mostly older hardware so can be free
08:41 AM _unreal_: @#%$@^$$% dog go away
08:42 AM _unreal_: still whining because other family members are still not up
08:42 AM gloops: a lot of people use mach4 because they can use a laptop instead of a desktop
08:42 AM gloops: and windows
08:42 AM _unreal_: I use to use turbocnc
08:43 AM _unreal_: worked great very fast on an old 486 laptop
09:01 AM gregcnc: oh man turbocnc
09:15 AM pcw_home: jthornton: if you need a lot of hollow spacers or M/F threaded spaces, Fascomp in Florida is great
09:21 AM jthornton: pcw_home: thanks
09:49 AM jthornton: I wonder if there is any reason to keep this box of modem cards???
09:56 AM _unreal_: heh modem cards
09:56 AM _unreal_: ahh the good old days
09:57 AM _unreal_: I still have my old usrobotics external serial 56k modem somewhere
09:57 AM _unreal_: https://emc2arduino.wordpress.com/
09:58 AM _unreal_: found what I'm looking for from the looks of it. add support to use arduino based cnc motor controllers that are DIRT cheap.
10:28 AM jthornton: how does that work?
11:03 AM SpeedEvil is now known as Guest17085
11:38 AM fragalot: jthornton: first, you start a kickstarter. then you don't update your website for at least 3 years.
11:49 AM fragalot: that said - it does look pretty neat if you want masses of slow I/O added
12:04 PM pcw_home: Yeah, doesn't look Like it ever really worked for motion but would be good for some smart peripheral like a tool changer
12:46 PM Rab: "For my friends and family that have been wondering what I’ve been working on these past months."
12:46 PM Rab: "As we are nearing the roll-out our kick-starter campaign, I’m proud to finally be able to show-off something that my friends & I have been working so very hard to make a reality…."
12:46 PM Rab: [PocketNC Duck Call]
12:49 PM Rab: No demonstration of the finished product; a weak testimony for PocketNC and Fusion360.
01:15 PM renesis: wtf arduino
01:17 PM renesis: wtf 2013/2015
01:35 PM fragalot: renesis: 't was the time
01:38 PM JT-Shop2: hmm looks like I have the wrong reeves pulley for the lathe... wrong keyway
01:39 PM renesis: just ram it on there
01:43 PM JT-Shop2: if I had a 4mm key cutter I could fixit
01:49 PM * JT-Shop2 moves on to another project to ponder this
01:50 PM fragalot: JT-Shop2: just grind a toolbit & abuse the lathe as a shaper
01:51 PM gregcnc: I slotted 4mm in 4140PH that way last week
01:51 PM JT-Shop2: hmm, I'm not sure I follow
01:52 PM fragalot: basically you spend an hour or 2 doing this to save on buying a $80 broach
01:53 PM JT-Shop2: I guess I could grind a 4mm bit of 4140 to fit the key and press the pulley past it
01:53 PM JT-Shop2: or an $80 part
01:53 PM fragalot: put the pulley in the lathe, lock the spindle, and mount your tool into the tool post
01:53 PM fragalot: then just move it back & forth, taking a small pass every time just like you would in a shaper
01:53 PM JT-Shop2: ah I see
01:53 PM * JT-Shop2 wonders if he can lock the spindle on the samson...
01:54 PM gregcnc: back gear?
01:54 PM JT-Shop2: yea
01:54 PM * fragalot used some straps & a clamp the other day on his chinese lathe
01:54 PM JT-Shop2: back gear low is pretty locked up lol
01:56 PM gregcnc: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_oC3p2lGMA
01:57 PM fragalot: love the use of flood coolant :D
02:00 PM BitEvil is now known as SpeedEvil
02:13 PM _unreal_: finally!!!! got gelcoat on the problem side of the splash mold to stay
02:13 PM _unreal_: FINALLY
02:13 PM _unreal_: I stupidly used plexus to glue all my foam blocks together.....
02:14 PM _unreal_: VE, polyester, and gelcoat will not cure when near plexus cured or not
02:14 PM _unreal_: near or touching
02:15 PM _unreal_: so I've had these stupid ass lines around the mold that where more like divits...
02:15 PM _unreal_: finally just ground the SHIT out of them. I mean like 1/2" deep with my dremel. and packed all of them with car bondo.
02:15 PM _unreal_: THAT cured and got rid of it......
02:16 PM _unreal_: just finished trying to gel the stupid mold for the 5th time
02:16 PM _unreal_: still have to flip it over and spray the other face
02:16 PM _unreal_: 3pm and will be dark in 2 hours. dont know that I'll get time today
02:46 PM JT-Shop2: finally got the damn reeves pulley to fit... took some hammering with the old key then just the right file to clean it up
03:34 PM gloops: silent night
03:53 PM Tom_L: every good shop had a FULL set of hammers
03:54 PM Tom_L: s/had/has
04:02 PM gloops: theres usually one within 3 feet of me
04:14 PM Deejay: gn8
05:47 PM jthornton: hmm got the old pc to boot without a monitor keyboard or mouse now to get samba working I think
05:48 PM Tom_L: :)
05:48 PM Tom_L: that's how my server is
05:48 PM Tom_L: 'headless'
05:48 PM jthornton: trying to get my camera server going again
05:48 PM jthornton: I can ssh into it now
05:49 PM jthornton: I have two IDE hard drives on it but not seeing the slave drive from ssh
08:20 PM skunkworks: ide? what is that?
08:20 PM skunkworks: ;)
09:41 PM roycroft: ide is that new-fangled thing that is supposed to replace st-506
10:22 PM flyback: that's nothing
10:23 PM flyback: I been dealing with a p100
10:23 PM flyback: 32mb ram
10:23 PM flyback: dead cdrom
10:23 PM flyback: isa nic no pxe booting
10:23 PM flyback: scsi-1
10:23 PM flyback: no usb
10:23 PM flyback: nt4
10:23 PM flyback: metal shavings in the case
10:23 PM Tom_L: i just resoldered the connectors on my P100
10:23 PM flyback: seized cpu fan and the wires were crispy
10:23 PM flyback: but I fixed it all up
10:23 PM flyback: and imaged it
10:23 PM flyback: the cmos batt was down to 1v
10:23 PM flyback: it would not have surv ived the trip overseas
10:24 PM flyback: p3 also but that one was in better shape with win2k and usb
10:24 PM flyback: they are both cnc machines
10:24 PM flyback: also had to fix a win9x one
10:26 PM flyback: else i'd build them a nice vm and vm host for their old software
