05:26 AM Tom_itx: morning
05:30 AM XXCoder: hey
05:31 AM Tom_itx: 30°F Hi 58
05:43 AM jthornton: 31-54 and clear
09:58 AM weenerdog: howdy
10:29 AM ziper: would it be a good idea to make a gantry out of fiberglass or carbon fiber?
10:40 AM Rab: If you want it to be lightweight, perhaps. I think there are advantages to having some mass. But it depends on what you want to do.
10:41 AM Rab: Like, for laser or 3D printing, that might be great.
11:10 AM weenerdog: my stradgedy is to build one out of 3/4 plywood and use it to build a better aluminum one
11:11 AM weenerdog: only because i have a bunch of good birch ply laying around just waiting to have something cool fabricobbled out of it
11:13 AM weenerdog: my cousin took up cabinet making just long enough to buy a bunch of it and ask me if he could store it in my barn :) after 10 years, he lives 2 states away. so... heh heh
11:13 AM SpeedEvil: Ply can be really rigid if you use it to make supported box structures
11:13 AM ziper: I only ask because the one I am welding up doesn't look so good
11:14 AM ziper: maybe I should just go with ply
11:14 AM SpeedEvil: Welding ply is harder.
11:14 AM weenerdog: what are you welding it out of? steel or alu?
11:15 AM weenerdog: and if its straight, fuck it. paint it.
11:15 AM ziper: steel
11:15 AM weenerdog: grind it til its pretty. you could see my welds. they hold but they definitely aint sexy
11:15 AM SpeedEvil: Bolts also work just fine.
11:16 AM weenerdog: lol i can see a gantry made with my lincoln ac225. poop on a white rag.
11:16 AM ziper: I bought a piece of C channel to use as the gantry crossmember, but it was way too heavy, so I welded two pieces of thin square tube
11:16 AM SpeedEvil: If you're stressing joints near where weld quality matters, you're probably not going to be very rigid anyway
11:55 AM gregcnc: malaysian air force? what the cluck https://www.instagram.com/p/BrbYW-DhVUn/
12:50 PM Loetmichel: sensille: hmmm. context?
12:50 PM sensille: oh, you mean yesterday? :)
12:52 PM sensille: when you change tools, how do you touch off the tool after changing (during a program)? same as the initial z-touch off?
12:52 PM sensille: or do you use the tool length sensor that came with the machine?
01:48 PM rmu: proof by induction: https://www.smbc-comics.com/comic/proof
01:53 PM ziper: http://www.smbc-comics.com/index.php?db=comics&id=2386
02:01 PM gloops: would be better if the coil was inside a box, schrodinger style
02:34 PM fragalot: miss0r|office: congrats on missing out on the whole debt pardon thing :-)
03:00 PM jthornton: nice sunny day here got 6.5 miles in on the mountain bike... oh well break is over back to work now
04:01 PM Deejay: gn8
04:03 PM andypugh: sensille: You can’t touch-off manually mid-program. So if your tool holder does not guarantee consistent length then you can either use an automated tool length measurment routine or split the G-clode into 1-file-per-tool.
04:03 PM andypugh: If you don’t have an auto tool changer then there really isn’t much to be gained from in-file tool changes. And one-file-per tool is a lot more flexible.
07:49 PM norias: i want to do my own TV show
07:49 PM norias: Machine Shop Nightmares
07:49 PM norias: I'll go verbally abuse shop owners
07:50 PM MarcelineVQ: You didn't TAP IT DOWN
07:51 PM MarcelineVQ: Look at these loose parallels, what a joke
07:52 PM norias: the shit i've seen
07:52 PM MarcelineVQ: There's always a scene where he's pissed off at the state of the refrigerator, got any lines for examining the inventory?
07:52 PM norias: oh, dude
07:52 PM norias: that's the hell i'm in, now
07:52 PM norias: the owner is a scrap hoarder
07:52 PM norias: it's so bad that actual parts GET LOST ON THE SHOP FLOOR
07:53 PM norias: and have to be made again
07:53 PM norias: "Oh, fuck. How long has this been here? Is this a spare part for the Titanic?"
07:56 PM norias: the one shop i took over
07:56 PM norias: i called the recycling place and had them bring dumpsets
