01:48 AM Deejay: moin
04:50 AM jthornton: morning
04:51 AM XXCoder: hey jthornton
04:52 AM russian_troll: selroc: Today's Log http://www.isaeff.net/logs/%23linuxcnc/2018-11-15.html
04:57 AM selroc: hi pink
04:58 AM jthornton: interesting we have a russian log now?
05:01 AM XXCoder: yeah apparently lol
05:01 AM XXCoder: homepage "THIS PAGE INTENTIONALLY LEFT BLANK "
05:02 AM XXCoder: log not found so I guess logger isnt working. or maybe its just troll
05:16 AM XXCoder: if someone gets on and off few times without saying thing my script start removing leave and enetrs
05:17 AM jthornton: are you using hexchat?
05:18 AM XXCoder: yeah
05:18 AM XXCoder: there is 2 configable options at near start of script, well commented
05:18 AM XXCoder: https://github.com/rredford/Hexchat.NoRepeat
05:19 AM Tom_itx: the other log has been broke a while
05:19 AM XXCoder: first is within 20 minutes, and much longer term one (usually higher number of times before it triggers)
05:19 AM XXCoder: special case is disabled by default
05:23 AM Tom_itx: 25°F Hi 53
05:24 AM jthornton: we got about an inch of snow last night with snow likely this morning too
05:24 AM jthornton: I wonder if the chickens remember snow from last winter lol
05:25 AM Tom_itx: not coming from us this time. looks like it's circling up from the gulf
05:32 AM Tom_itx is now known as Tom_L
05:32 AM XXCoder: wow sun is cold one for here. low of 35f and high of n44f
05:43 AM jthornton: we are 28-41°F today... I'll be burning some wood in the shops for sure
05:44 AM jthornton: XXCoder: did you figure out a way to insulate your window from the outside?
05:45 AM XXCoder: not really, today didnt go too well so not in great mood to do anything. im thinking maybe one of those srunk heat plastic covers
05:48 AM MarcelineVQ: I've heat-shrank the indoor side of windows in the basement and it worked very well, has held up without needing more attention
05:50 AM XXCoder: interesting and since its inside it barely gets any envorment damage
05:53 AM * Loetmichel once sat a second glass pane in the frame for a window insulation.
05:53 AM Loetmichel: on 10mm square aluminium spacers filled with silica gel ;)
05:54 AM XXCoder: outside is like 1/4 inch, inside theres more room but water vapors get in so maube get moldy
05:55 AM jthornton: the water vapor is already inside the cold surface draws it out of the air
05:59 AM Loetmichel: XXCoder: i set the second pane into silicone caulking, so its airtight with the first pane... the silica gel is just for getting rid of any vater vapor in the air that got in while installing
05:59 AM XXCoder: cool
05:59 AM XXCoder: unfortunately mine is open to outside
05:59 AM XXCoder: holes to drain any water that manages to get to frame
06:00 AM jthornton: the window does not seal off the inside?
06:00 AM Loetmichel: plastic spacers would have been even better for insulation pourposes but the window frame was already made of aluminium, so not much difference there anyways
06:01 AM XXCoder: jt it techinically does, rain cannot get in
06:01 AM Loetmichel: only drawback was 10mm times two less "light input" area
06:01 AM XXCoder: windows is very much not 1940s, good thing
06:01 AM Loetmichel: for the spacer frame between the original glass and the second one
06:02 AM XXCoder: but still some cold leak issues
06:02 AM XXCoder: my side room window keeps blowing little bit of cold air to my back
06:02 AM Loetmichel: put a bit of fine open cell sponge/foam in the drain holes
06:03 AM Loetmichel: should hold back the air while the water can still pass
06:03 AM XXCoder: hey thats interesting will check into that. thanks
06:04 AM XXCoder: something like https://www.amazon.com/Pack-Open-Cell-Conditioner-Weather-Strip/dp/B011T0Z9FA/ ?
06:10 AM jthornton: old windows and brick work used cotton to wick the water out and seal off the opening
06:16 AM jthornton: hmm I need to turn this netgear rounter into a switch...
06:18 AM XXCoder: should be strightforward
06:19 AM jthornton: I found a button to turn off the wifi so far
06:19 AM XXCoder: many of better routers has ability to turn off dns as well as routing functionality
06:19 AM XXCoder: turning it into fancy switch
06:21 AM jthornton: there is a WPS button I wonder what that does
06:22 AM XXCoder: that automates wifi setup
06:22 AM XXCoder: also insecure as hell
06:22 AM XXCoder: I always disable that
06:54 AM jthornton: I did get windoze xp activated and acad installed
06:58 AM XXCoder: awesome :)
06:58 AM XXCoder: using tht actibvaton bypass site?
06:59 AM jthornton: no, with regedit
07:00 AM XXCoder: yeah I meant the guide to do exactly that lol. bit late here
07:00 AM jthornton: I thought you meant some site that activated it lol
07:00 AM XXCoder: yeah
07:04 AM XXCoder: off to bed, hopefully tomorrow will be better day
07:04 AM XXCoder: one things for sure. no more broaching for now!
07:04 AM jthornton: night
07:04 AM XXCoder: the recent broaching job went badly, one coworker keep messing it up and another one on my shift keeps having to fix it for 5 or 6 hours
07:05 AM XXCoder: then I finally run it for while
07:05 AM jthornton: that doesn't make for a fun place to work
07:06 AM XXCoder: yeah the one who fixed it twice is gettung pissed off
07:06 AM XXCoder: might have 26 scrap parts, but maybe can be fixed
07:07 AM XXCoder: im somewhat sure the guy who messed it is on his way out, he got caught drinking 3 times for example
07:07 AM XXCoder: considering he only worked for few months thats not good
07:07 AM jthornton: yea that ain't good either
07:07 AM jthornton: sounds like he needs to dry out and get a grip
07:08 AM XXCoder: I dont know why that guy keeps changing stuff on broaching. its very simple
07:08 AM MarcelineVQ: you get to keep working while drinking in a machine shop thrice?
07:08 AM MarcelineVQ: are you hiring? :>
07:08 AM methods_: right
07:08 AM XXCoder: just oil the bore, start program, it stops before entering so can clock broach arm to post, oil broach itself, start again and it moves down spinning away
07:08 AM XXCoder: then oil it again as it starts to enter bore
07:09 AM XXCoder: wait till it starts spinning rapidly then let handle go and wait for a minute
07:09 AM XXCoder: clean bore
07:10 AM XXCoder: MarcelineVQ: you have no idea how hard up this region is for machinists.
07:10 AM XXCoder: probably why im still working
07:10 AM XXCoder: i do pretty good but far below par of others
07:11 AM XXCoder: ugh my bum face hair is itchy. cant wait for nov to be over
07:11 AM XXCoder: I just cant stand facial hair
07:12 AM XXCoder: nov no shave month is pretty good cause tho lol
07:12 AM XXCoder: anyway bedtime, and hopefully better day today
07:12 AM XXCoder: wb MarcelineVQ
07:12 AM XXCoder: er Mangy_Dog
07:12 AM XXCoder: err welcome as I dont think youre been here before lol
07:13 AM Mangy_Dog: hi im just trying to find some cheep rails for a printer build.... o/ xxcoder Just need to check... The rails, will be mounted on 2020 alu, do they need to be hardened steel or stainless?
07:13 AM Mangy_Dog: nope
07:13 AM XXCoder: im not sure myself but others is pretty knowledgable
07:13 AM XXCoder: laters
07:28 AM Loetmichel: hmm... $me is just milling the 18th front lid for PCs out of 1,5mm sheet aluminium... and that thing has 100s of air slots / millling path... Still the first 2mm 2 flute mill bit in the spindle. Seems that using the occasional breakout tab to hold cutouts in place REALLY elongates the mill bit life :-)
08:41 AM jdh: you need a laser or waterjet
09:13 AM SpeedEvil: To paraphrase a great philosopher.
09:13 AM SpeedEvil: Punch it Loetmichel.
09:20 AM jthornton: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9SqQNgDrgg
09:37 AM Loetmichel: jdh: neither can make half depth slots in the sheet
09:38 AM jdh: oh yeah.
09:38 AM Loetmichel: would have given that out to manufacturers but i designed myself into a corner, the front lid of the PC is folded twice with 16mm depth, not enough room for a cnc bending brake to fit the plunger into
09:39 AM Loetmichel: so i have to make them myself and bend them by hand
09:39 AM Loetmichel: s/plunger/knife
09:46 AM jdh: I tried to get a Bardac drive manual from their website yesterday. the Captcha made me click through 5 sets of pics and then the page reloaded and made n
09:47 AM jdh: me restart the captcha
09:47 AM MarcelineVQ: That kind of thing is a lot of fun, related I keep more than one browser because modern websites still aren't compliant across browsers :X
09:48 AM jdh: I called them. on hold multiple times. they said they didn't make it do that. then they said google did it.
09:49 AM SpeedEvil: right.
09:49 AM MarcelineVQ: training their AI's on your clicks :(
09:49 AM jdh: thwn he gave me the download password, bardac3400.
09:49 AM MarcelineVQ: There's something cool sounding about that password, not sure why
09:50 AM jdh: and then I added them to my 'never buy' list
09:50 AM jdh: along with DeStaco clamps and asco redhat valves
10:20 AM mozmck: jdh: what do you prefer over DeStaco clamps?
10:20 AM jdh: pretty much anything.
10:20 AM mozmck: I have bought some chinese versions that seem pretty good.
10:20 AM jdh: duct tape
10:21 AM mozmck: Do you not like the concept or the brand?
10:31 AM jdh: concept
11:52 AM * fragalot is secretly hoping the GBP is going to tank soon
11:52 AM fragalot: going there again soon, so the lower the exchange rate the better :D
11:53 AM SpeedEvil: fragalot: As long as you can get past the machine guns.
11:53 AM fragalot: easy, you flash a little ID card, open your boot to prove there is no-one hiding in it, and the move out of the way.
11:53 AM fragalot: they*
11:53 AM fragalot: OR, and this is my preferred method
11:54 AM fragalot: you let the ferry company know that you will be bringing a gun of your own
11:54 AM fragalot: and you get free priority boarding :D
01:50 PM Sabotend_ is now known as Sabotender
02:07 PM huibuuh: hey hou, can someone help me run the latency-test ? I had to start the live usb in failsafe (because nvidia driver hung) and I always get an error:
02:07 PM huibuuh: Error: could not insert module /usr/realtime-3.4-9-rtai-686-pae/modules/rtai_hal.ko: Operation not permitted
02:14 PM huibuuh is now known as huibuuh3
02:16 PM gloops: hmm i cant help with, not tried a new install on the stick?
02:17 PM huibuuh3: yeah I kinda wanna try the latency-test before I install it :D
02:19 PM JT-Shop2: failsafe sounds like a windoze thing...
02:19 PM gloops: you should be able to run that from usb install
02:19 PM huibuuh: failsafe is the 2nd option from the start menu of the live usb, nothing to do with windows
02:20 PM gloops: switch nvidia driver for another to test ?
02:21 PM huibuuh: yeah I also got another gfx card, but before I start to fiddle with the hardware I hoped to get an easy software trick
02:21 PM huibuuh: I've seen in the documentation now that I might just need to pass an argument to the kernel to enable some module imma try that after laundry ;-)
02:22 PM JT-Shop2: for nvida you probably need to install debian from non-free net install then install the rt preempt kernel
02:24 PM huibuuh: yeah I guess I try that if the latency looks good and I install to get nvidia working, or I try my other gfx card
02:24 PM huibuuh: thx for the tips guys
02:24 PM {HD}: Holy! My calipers don’t auto off! They have been on for like 2 days!
02:25 PM Tom_L: keeps the batteries warm
02:26 PM JT-Shop2: lol
02:27 PM gloops: theyll work fine until you need them
02:28 PM {HD}: Always the case
02:29 PM MarcelineVQ: {HD}: capacitive? they're always on dear. and the display doesn't use that much more battery
02:37 PM {HD}: Dear?
02:37 PM {HD}: Lol
02:38 PM {HD}: https://i.imgur.com/nNjPtRy.jpg
02:38 PM MarcelineVQ: That's the model I have :>
02:40 PM {HD}: Guess I should always have an extra battery in the case anyway. Gotta order a few more.
02:40 PM MarcelineVQ: the vast majority of capacative calipers use power all the time, to keep the field up to retain their zero position, that's why when you slide open those jaws it comes on right away and has already calculated how far it moved
02:41 PM MarcelineVQ: I got some energizer 357's but haven't had a chance to use 'em yet
02:43 PM {HD}: MarcelineVQ: does your display timeout? I thought these did that but no linger.
02:43 PM {HD}: Longer*
02:43 PM MarcelineVQ: you want SR-equivalent batteries if you can get them for buttons batteries
02:44 PM {HD}: What is sr equiv?
02:44 PM MarcelineVQ: I thought it did, lemme go turn it on and I'll let you know if it's off later
02:45 PM MarcelineVQ: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Button_cell SR/LR/CR are the standard chemistry types of that type of battery, SR is silver and tends to have the most amerage and stable voltage
02:45 PM MarcelineVQ: So if you can get name brand batteries that "replace SR" but don't say SR then they're SR equivalent
02:45 PM huibuuh: aaaah wonderful I finally got it to work. I just had to add nomodeset to the kernel commandline so the nvidia card wouldn't crash
02:46 PM MarcelineVQ: https://www.energizer.ca/specialty-batteries/357-303-battery happen to be silver, but that doesn't mean all batteries that "replaces SR" have to be
02:47 PM JT-Shop2: huibuuh: let the latency test run for a long while...
02:47 PM {HD}: MarcelineVQ: neat. I’ll see what the store has in stock.
02:47 PM MarcelineVQ: {HD}: I've turned them on, will let you know if they turn off. Try sliding yours halfway and then leaving them on a table and see if they turn off, maybe the sensors are bouncing a little in the closed position
02:48 PM huibuuh: well, it's already on 73000 on the upper thread (servo) so I guess I'm fked lol
02:49 PM JT-Shop2: what are you using? pci(e) card, parallel port and which version of linuxcnc?
02:50 PM huibuuh: I haven't installed the PCIe to Parallel card yet. I'm using 2.7 downloaded today :D
02:52 PM JT-Shop2: so you need software step generation... yea that's a bit high for that. now I have to assume which linuxcnc you downloaded is the RTAI version which is usually best for software step generation
02:53 PM * JT-Shop2 goes to install the last wind block for the chickens
02:55 PM huibuuh: yeah it's 3.4--rtai-686-pae
02:59 PM gloops: you can get an old XP box for ÂŁ20, less
03:05 PM MarcelineVQ: {HD}: mine turned off
03:05 PM MarcelineVQ: more correctly, the display is blank
03:06 PM {HD}: MarcelineVQ: mine haven’t turned off. It’s been over five minutes which I believe is the traditional time out. Period
03:09 PM MarcelineVQ: afaik the display doesn't drain that much more, especially if it's not changing often, so it's not the end of the world if you forget to shut it off. you might be able to find a video or blog post about that subject somewhere though, I could be misinformed
03:46 PM XXCoder: wow linuxcnc has been updating a LOT lately. wonder why
03:49 PM SpeedEvil: Recent updates have been to screen out propagating cognitohazards from g-code.
03:50 PM XXCoder: tsk tsk SCP gcodes
04:05 PM Deejay: gn8
07:05 PM zeeshan: howdy
07:39 PM zeeshan: if a 460/230VAC dual voltage motor is configured for 230VAC and someone feeds it 460VAC
07:39 PM zeeshan: what would happen? :D
07:39 PM andypugh: Probably not very much in the short term. Long term it would overheat
07:40 PM zeeshan: my understanding is the highest voltage is a series connection, while the lower voltage is parallel
07:40 PM zeeshan: okay, thats what i think happened to one of our machines in the field
07:40 PM zeeshan: customer said motor fried and you can see obvious overheating marks
07:41 PM gregcnc: I can smell it here
07:41 PM zeeshan: hehe
07:42 PM zeeshan: i cant figure out why the motor would fry though
07:43 PM gregcnc: V/Hz is wrong
07:43 PM zeeshan: yes but physically whats going on
07:43 PM andypugh: The current will be nuch higher in the low resistance configuration
07:43 PM zeeshan: its drawing more current in the windiings?
07:43 PM gregcnc: too much current
07:43 PM zeeshan: wouldn't you just fry the motor right away though?
07:43 PM zeeshan: this things been running for 1 week intermittently
07:43 PM gregcnc: themral time constant?
07:43 PM zeeshan: i'd think the motor would fry right away
07:43 PM zeeshan: as soon as it saw load
07:43 PM andypugh: Motors can get very hot before actually frying, and the back-emf plays a role too.
07:44 PM gregcnc: light load?
07:44 PM andypugh: I suspect you could run a motor at light load at the wrong voltage pretty much indefinitely.
07:45 PM zeeshan: man i'm so out of it lately
07:46 PM gregcnc: I heard pot is legal?
07:46 PM zeeshan: haha
07:46 PM zeeshan: pot is for stupids :)
07:46 PM zeeshan: i've gone pretty dumb too
07:46 PM gregcnc: lolz
07:46 PM zeeshan: i sit on a desk designing machines and sizing motors
07:46 PM zeeshan: and doing all sorts of stress calcs
07:46 PM zeeshan: i haven't touched a tool for the last 3 weeks
07:47 PM zeeshan: the best way i can describe my dumbness is like this
07:47 PM zeeshan: the other day a designer was arguing with me that you can't torque a bolt by hand
07:47 PM zeeshan: rofl
07:47 PM zeeshan: to get somewhat a decent clamp load
07:47 PM zeeshan: i actually had to think about it.
07:53 PM zeeshan: andypugh: i saw your keway broaching on the lathe :D
07:53 PM zeeshan: well done!
07:53 PM andypugh: It’s rather a short video, but it works well
07:54 PM sync: that just depends on how you define decent zeeshan
07:54 PM zeeshan: the cool thing about doing it like that
07:54 PM zeeshan: is you can make tapered keyways
07:55 PM gregcnc: am I not subscribed?
07:55 PM andypugh: I want a CNC slotting head for my mill, with a C axis for the cutter
07:55 PM zeeshan: gregcnc: it was like a month ago
07:55 PM zeeshan: sync: i rarely ever use a torque wrench for non critical stuff
07:56 PM zeeshan: it's pretty unbelievable that a designer thinks you need a torque wrench to torque every single bolt
07:56 PM sync: yes
07:56 PM zeeshan: 45 years old
07:56 PM zeeshan: ..
07:56 PM sync: just tell him to use TTY bolts on every joint
07:56 PM andypugh: Oh, I read that as him saying that finger-tight was no use
07:56 PM andypugh: (and wing / butterfly nuts can actually be pretty effective)
07:56 PM sync: yeah, me too andypugh
07:57 PM zeeshan: by hand i meant by using a toold by hand
07:57 PM gregcnc: what do you have against torque wrenches?
07:57 PM zeeshan: nothing at all!
07:57 PM zeeshan: they're great for critical applications
07:57 PM gregcnc: just taking them out of the tool box?
07:57 PM zeeshan: but if you're frigging bolting a wire tray , who in their right mind would use a torque wrench
07:57 PM gregcnc: ah well
07:58 PM zeeshan: arguements are so draining ;[
07:58 PM gregcnc: I have to see if there is a torque spec for VDI
07:58 PM sync: just use engineered shearoff fasteners
07:59 PM zeeshan: vdi?
07:59 PM gregcnc: lathe turrret
07:59 PM zeeshan: ah
07:59 PM zeeshan: you guys should see the frigging thing i designed at work
07:59 PM zeeshan: a multi gang saw!
07:59 PM zeeshan: thing needs 4140 q&t tgp shafting
07:59 PM gregcnc: like on a huge shaft?
07:59 PM zeeshan: first legit use of shafting
08:00 PM zeeshan: of that spec for me
08:00 PM andypugh: I don’t completely understand VDI. I tink because I have never seen a good picture of the inside.
08:00 PM zeeshan: where i need material test reports
08:00 PM zeeshan: oh vdi tooling
08:00 PM sync: https://ae01.alicdn.com/kf/HTB1ZDFcQXXXXXcuapXXq6xXFXXX4/VDI-werkzeughalter-der-MUTTER-SCHLOSS-VDI20-30-40.jpg andypugh
08:01 PM gregcnc: http://www.sphoorti.com/locking-clamp/
08:01 PM andypugh: What (if anything) pulls the tools back for Z repeatability?
08:01 PM gregcnc: the clamp
08:02 PM andypugh: Are the Vees at an angle to the axis?
08:02 PM gregcnc: no
08:04 PM zeeshan: doesn't the tool register against the turret
08:05 PM zeeshan: for z indexing
08:06 PM andypugh: The Vees will even-out to parallel to the VDI axis, and then the axis of the bore that the clamp slides in will locate in Z, I reckon.
08:06 PM andypugh: It’s quite clever, as far as I can see so far.
08:06 PM zeeshan: sounds sketchy :p
08:06 PM zeeshan: my hunk of steel lathe has em
08:07 PM zeeshan: but i've never even touched that lathe since i got it :[
08:10 PM gregcnc: I think the pressure is on one side of the vee and as the clamp closes draws it back.
08:10 PM gregcnc: I'm not sure that it ever fully seats
08:10 PM zeeshan: theres gotta be some pin or register
08:10 PM zeeshan: to lock it in z
08:10 PM gregcnc: tension
08:11 PM zeeshan: tension isn't really that consistent though?
08:11 PM zeeshan: TORQUE WRENCH!
08:11 PM gregcnc: the back of the holder sits on teh face of the disc
08:11 PM zeeshan: gregcnc: you should make an animation for me :D
08:11 PM gregcnc: if is fully seated it's not going anywhere
08:11 PM gregcnc: I send you a quote
08:12 PM andypugh: I don’t think that there does. Imagine clamping it up tight, and now imagine pulling it in and out of the hole. It can’t move axially without rocking the clamp, and the clamp can’t rock because it is clamped down hard into the serratiions
08:12 PM gregcnc: but that might be work doing
08:12 PM gregcnc: worth
08:13 PM zeeshan: i'd need to see a 3d model
08:13 PM gregcnc: it doesn't ahve to rock, just wedging action
08:16 PM weenerdog: howdy
08:17 PM andypugh: Crikey! I don;t think I have ever seen anyone actually say “howdy” afore.
08:18 PM weenerdog: lol
08:18 PM zeeshan: you need to visit the states mate
08:18 PM zeeshan: :p
08:18 PM andypugh: I have been to some of the states.
08:19 PM andypugh: I should count them some time.
08:20 PM gregcnc: forgot I already have the turret and holders modeled
08:20 PM andypugh: 16 of them, so far, having looked at the map.
08:21 PM andypugh: Though Texas might not count, that was just an airline transfer coming back from Kansas
08:22 PM zeeshan: pics gregcnc
08:22 PM zeeshan: andypugh: have you been to georgia?
08:22 PM zeeshan: it's prretty place. i'm driving down next week
08:23 PM andypugh: I reckon so, I drove from NY to FL and don’t think we took the AL option.
08:24 PM weenerdog: i live in the tippy top of the blue ridge mtns in NC. at 4100' (1250m)
08:24 PM jdh: -Gipiemme-Laufräder/dp/B00IG5V43S/
