01:11 AM jesseg: Howdy!
01:24 AM CaptHindsight: https://downdetector.com/status/youtube/map/
01:27 AM CaptHindsight: if you zoom out far enough you discover that the earth has three Africas
01:57 AM Deejay: moin
03:47 AM Loetmichel: *meh* The CE-lab managed to kill the SIXTH i5 cpu in a device from us. I wonder how the 24V 125W picopsu that we use in that box got its automotive rating... now i have to put some 10uH chokes and a 36V supressor diode into the power plug and hope... (MAAAN is that tight in there!) -> http://www.cyrom.org/palbum/main.php?g2_itemId=17214&g2_imageViewsIndex=1
03:52 AM TurBoss: morning
05:57 AM jthornton: morning
07:30 AM laminae_: hey guys, i got a small request for a vaccuum form buck and i had some good results using mdf but i'm looking for other options, has anyone found a good foam that machines well and hopefully a material that can easily be coated with high temp resin after it is machined?
08:08 AM Loetmichel: *gnhihi* that pilots face says "maaan, i just cleaned that bird..." -> https://www.isnichwahr.de/r264281-die-idee-des-tages.html
08:28 AM jthornton: damn example code shoule at least compile without debugging errors lol
08:51 AM methods_: luckily she's white
08:51 AM methods_: everyone knows white people can't jump
09:40 AM Inline_ is now known as Inline
10:10 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ

12:24 PM Xnke: Hello folks
12:24 PM gloops: evening
12:24 PM pink_vampire: hello
12:25 PM fragalot: evenin'
12:25 PM Xnke: My Mesa 7i96 card should show up today, I'm pretty hyped for it
12:26 PM Xnke: the new itx case will be in Friday so I'm gathering junk to get a computer together this weekend
12:26 PM gloops: just like xmas morning :)
12:27 PM Xnke: nah that's the day the motion control hardware shows up...I work for a machine shop in the engineering Dept and get first dibs on all the discarded stuff
12:27 PM Xnke: ...mainly because I am the only one who wears steel plated soles for tromping through the dumpster
12:28 PM gloops: im a keen skip-diver myself
12:29 PM jthornton: dammit after 3 days of searching I finally found a digole lcd example that worked!
12:30 PM Loetmichel: Xnke: yeah, steel plated shoes help if you wander in junkjards
12:33 PM Xnke: yep. I walk the scrapyards every city I go to, found an entire pallet of new turbochargers once.
12:45 PM Xnke: awwww yeah, just found a Logan lathe for 80 bucks. gonna have to sell my Atlas-Craftsman
12:49 PM CaptHindsight: Xnke: my luck would be all 7 cylinder turbos :)
12:52 PM FinboySlick: 7 cylinder turbo? Like an inline 7?
12:53 PM FinboySlick: Sounds like some sort of odd marine diesel to me.
12:53 PM CaptHindsight: nah, just something that really doesn't fit anything well
12:53 PM CaptHindsight: like a crate of left mittens
12:54 PM FinboySlick: Didn't the original Quattro have 5cyl turbo?
12:54 PM fragalot: CaptHindsight: i'm sure there is a crowd of woodworkers that only need the left mitten
12:54 PM FinboySlick: And in that vein, I have a bunch of left socks.
12:54 PM CaptHindsight: left socks vs socks left
12:55 PM fragalot: my current car doesn't even have a turbo anymore
12:55 PM fragalot: turns out that if you just increase the volume of the cylinders you can also get more power, faster
12:55 PM CaptHindsight: now who woulda thoughta that?
12:56 PM FinboySlick: I like superchargers better, especially the twin-screw types.
12:56 PM FinboySlick: Such a lovely mechanical noise.
12:56 PM gloops: mercedes/vw did make some 5 cylinder engines
12:56 PM CaptHindsight: the problem with using bigger engines in cars is not having them interchangeable with lawn mowers
12:57 PM FinboySlick: Where's Zeechan when we're discussing automotive heresy?
12:58 PM fragalot: CaptHindsight: lol
12:58 PM rmu: efficiency of turbocharged motors usually is better
12:58 PM fragalot: rmu: depends on what you're doing with said motor
12:58 PM gloops: unless you drive like nigel mansell
12:58 PM fragalot: in my case it's a hybrid so the thing switches on & off like an indecisive toddler
01:00 PM Loetmichel: fragalot: turbochargers are good for efficiency... and for bruning waste oil in diesels
01:00 PM Loetmichel: :)
01:00 PM gloops: i had identical 2 litre pugs, one turbo, one not, same fuel consumption driving normally, turbo - a good bit less if you gave in to the temptation
01:01 PM gloops: as it is irresistable to thrash a turbo, you may as well say they do less to the gallon
01:01 PM SpeedEvil: yeah - unless the turbo engine is dramatically smaller, it doesn't really work like that
01:01 PM CaptHindsight: used to be anything here under 6L was an economy or compact car
01:02 PM * Loetmichel drives a 2.5 litre 6 cyl BMW diesel in his Opel Omega... nice engine... could do with a bit more oomph, but i dont dare to chiptune it now that it has close to 200Mm on the odo though.
01:03 PM delinquentme: Whats the term for setting the zero-point of your work piece relative to where the cutting tool starts?
01:03 PM Loetmichel: it has about 30hp more when installed in a BMW 5 series... they had to choke it a bit in the omega because of the radiator is to small... it overheats at full throttle
01:03 PM rmu: delinquentme: touch off?
01:03 PM gloops: touching off?
01:03 PM Loetmichel: delinquentme: touch off
01:04 PM delinquentme: Im using a software tool called vcarve to generate my path and I thought i set the tool "touch off" to the bottom left of the work piece... but it seems to work from the center. Any ideas how to fix this?
01:04 PM delinquentme: also is there a windows CNC chat channel?
01:06 PM CaptHindsight: delinquentme: not many windows anything channels on IRC
01:09 PM gloops: <delinquentme> are you setting the bottom left in the toolpaths window?
01:09 PM gloops: you get a setup window in the main file tab, but you need to set the other co-ordinate in the toolpath window
01:10 PM gloops: facebook > DIY CNC machines
01:10 PM gloops: lot of v carve users there, dont ask about warez help though, the vectric people are in there
01:11 PM delinquentme: yeah its set at 0,0 bottom left of the part
01:11 PM delinquentme: but when I do an airpass ... it starts cutting at an offset which looks like its 1/2 the length of the part.
01:12 PM gloops: wheres it set in the drawing window?
01:12 PM fragalot: CaptHindsight: 1.0l is the norm these days, lol
01:15 PM gloops: in the toolpath tab its material setup, XY datum
01:16 PM CaptHindsight: fragalot: it was once considered an achievement to get 1HP/cubic inch
01:16 PM CaptHindsight: 6.6L engine 400HP
01:18 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.oldride.com/library/1964_pontiac_tempest.html
01:18 PM fragalot: CaptHindsight: amazing what can be done when materials and time start to cost money :P
01:18 PM gloops: unleaded is £7 a gallon here though
01:18 PM fragalot: fuel prices are insane
01:19 PM fragalot: gloops: also, remember to say "UK gallon"
01:19 PM fragalot: because inane units aren't bad enough, they also have to differ per region
01:19 PM gloops: yeah which is probably less than everyone elses
01:19 PM CaptHindsight: they discovered that when the prices of gas here stays under $3/gal that consumers still spend money
01:19 PM Loetmichel: fragalot: american?
01:19 PM fragalot: Loetmichel: i'm belgian
01:19 PM gloops: anyway ive got a fire to light
01:20 PM CaptHindsight: when >$3/gal consumer confidence goes way down and the spending goes way down
01:20 PM Loetmichel: over here we are at 1.50eur per litre...
01:20 PM fragalot: 1.65 last I fueled up
01:20 PM Loetmichel: for petrol
01:20 PM Loetmichel: ouch
01:21 PM Loetmichel: note to self: dont fuel up in belgium when driving to france any time soon ;)
01:21 PM CaptHindsight: 87 octane regular unleaded <10% ethanol is ~$2.90
01:21 PM Loetmichel: CaptHindsight: per GALLON...
01:21 PM fragalot: Loetmichel: prices vary wildly per day
01:21 PM Loetmichel: isnt that about 3 liters?
01:21 PM fragalot: more
01:22 PM fragalot: the ethanol thing is great imho
01:22 PM fragalot: made from waste products with less energy but sold at a higher price
01:22 PM CaptHindsight: i paid $2.17/gal for E85 (>85% ethanol) yesterday
01:22 PM Loetmichel: a, 2.78 lites, so close to 4
01:22 PM CaptHindsight: 3.785L = 1 Gal
01:22 PM Loetmichel: 3.78
01:23 PM Loetmichel: so you fuel is essentially 1/3 of our fuel
01:23 PM Loetmichel: price wise ;)
01:24 PM CaptHindsight: whats your average price per L in euros?
01:24 PM CaptHindsight: 1.50?
01:24 PM Loetmichel: [20:18] <Loetmichel> over here we are at 1.50eur per litre...
01:24 PM Loetmichel: for regular 95 octane 5% ethanol
01:25 PM fragalot: CaptHindsight: something like that
01:26 PM CaptHindsight: $6.53/gal USD
01:26 PM CaptHindsight: so you're just over 2:1
01:26 PM Loetmichel: yeah, closer to 2:1 than 3:1
01:27 PM CaptHindsight: was in Chicago yesterday so add $0.50 per gallong
01:27 PM Loetmichel: still cheap as fu** for an euroean
01:27 PM CaptHindsight: gallon
01:27 PM Loetmichel: +p
01:28 PM CaptHindsight: they figured out how to extract oil from shale
01:28 PM CaptHindsight: so now they pump, water and organic solvents into the ground to push crude oil out
01:30 PM Loetmichel: CaptHindsight: https://www.spritmonitor.de/en/detail/843554.html <- the fuel prices for E10 for the last 1.5 ye4ars in central germany.
01:30 PM Loetmichel: have to fill in the most recent tank stops though
01:30 PM CaptHindsight: right before they rampped production of from fracking were were ~$5/gal
01:31 PM CaptHindsight: yeah, they kept fuel prices high in the EU to reduce consumption
01:31 PM CaptHindsight: over here it's still burn baby burn
01:33 PM fragalot: they're raising the price of diesel here now because it's too cheap compared to petrol
01:33 PM Loetmichel: also MAAAN that car was expensive... 2 years of fun and close to 4000 eur in sum... and now it will be pressed... cant get the roadworthy check renewed without extensive repairs and its due this month
01:34 PM fragalot: and regularly you hear in the new "crude oil at all time low" *next page* "fuel prices are going up due to prices on the crude oil market"
01:50 PM fragalot: CaptHindsight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JqfnlPELl_g
01:51 PM fragalot: amazes me that this is 'new'
02:02 PM CaptHindsight: on thuis machine we have to toggle F4 then G7 then M321, skip twice on your left foot, gargle with spinach soup and then tap 3 times on the spindle un-shut-off offset position compensation adjuster nut
02:02 PM CaptHindsight: now we are in safe mode
02:02 PM fragalot: :D
02:41 PM CaptHindsight: https://imgur.com/gallery/vJaRjpo
02:42 PM fragalot: cute
02:43 PM gloops: but why?
02:44 PM CaptHindsight: probably had some aluminum wire part project
02:44 PM fragalot: and he's the master of procrastination
02:44 PM fragalot: for instance
02:44 PM fragalot: I was working on building a granite cnc build
02:44 PM fragalot: so naturaly first you completely rebuild an RF45
02:44 PM fragalot: which you then sell & buy a shaublin
02:45 PM CaptHindsight: you didn't to prove that you're not lazy
02:45 PM CaptHindsight: did it/didn't
02:45 PM fragalot: :P
02:45 PM gloops: did you sort it delinquentme ?
02:47 PM ziper: that thing is sweet why would you ask why
02:48 PM FinboySlick: fragalot: Still flaunting your Schaublin, huh?
02:49 PM gloops: ziper whats the application for bending soft wire into elementary shapes?
02:50 PM fragalot: FinboySlick: to the end of my days
02:50 PM ziper: a nichrome cattle brand
02:51 PM fragalot: gloops: every spring ever made?
02:51 PM fragalot: wire hangers?
02:51 PM ziper: not soft
02:51 PM gloops: its not spring steel
02:51 PM pink_vampire: gloops: https://i0.wp.com/makezine.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/Queen-of-the-Night-e1438885090101.jpg
02:51 PM fragalot: ziper: depends on the manufacturing process
02:51 PM ziper: but that is a loaded question, no reason you couldnt build to for harder wires
02:51 PM fragalot: gotta prototype it somewhere
02:52 PM gloops: yes...that is pretty pink_vampire
02:52 PM gloops: im being constructively critical here, not just bitching about someones work
02:52 PM pink_vampire: it is a valid application for bending soft wire :-)
02:59 PM pink_vampire: much nicer machine https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dykosw63QV8
03:01 PM FinboySlick: pink_vampire: This one is a bit less relaxed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQIYZ-iKuG4
03:02 PM fragalot: I like the old style machines set with cams from back in the day
03:05 PM fragalot: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3HlFkgQY00 <== that style, but with 20+ fingers going at it from all angles
03:06 PM fragalot: no idea what the right search term woul dbe
03:27 PM XXCoder: someone made 3d printed wire bender lol
03:28 PM gregcnc: i think they are just called spring winders even if not very wound up
03:28 PM gregcnc: https://youtu.be/_pXLpPg0gm8
03:29 PM XXCoder: I cant imange first run of that machine
03:29 PM gregcnc: anything for YT income right?
03:31 PM XXCoder: heh some is basically yt income focused
03:32 PM gloops: those look like clothes peg springs
03:32 PM XXCoder: or plain wood clips
03:32 PM gloops: millions sold, for virtually nothing
03:33 PM XXCoder: heh yeah but same time machine probably make millions a day
03:33 PM XXCoder: even if sold for penny each it'll make lots money and machine long since paid
03:33 PM gloops: https://images.homedepot-static.com/productImages/e126251b-3e31-46fe-8f90-06e8bee87cb7/svn/wood-everbilt-clotheslines-14149-64_1000.jpg
03:34 PM pink_vampire: gloops: https://www.lowes.com/pl/Dryers-Washers-dryers-Appliances/4294857980
03:35 PM gloops: pink_vampire i dont think you can beat clothes dried in the fresh air
03:35 PM gloops: i do use a dryer in winter though
03:35 PM gloops: or if in a hurry
03:36 PM pink_vampire: we need better way to dry clothes
03:36 PM gloops: self cleaning cloth
03:37 PM XXCoder: theres new clothes that resist dirt and stuff but still very expensive for now
03:44 PM gloops: would seem a bit funny though, wearing a pair of jeans for 6 months without washing them lol
03:46 PM XXCoder: just 6 months? yeah lol
03:47 PM gloops: i remember there was a hells angel on our street when i was a kid, he went out and when he came back his mother had washed his denim cut off jacket and it was drying on the line
03:47 PM CaptHindsight: laundry water filtered to make clean drinking water or beer
03:47 PM gloops: he went crazy with her - the jacket hadnt been washed for 25 years
03:48 PM jthornton: I wonder if I got another broken egg laid from the roost this morning...
03:49 PM jthornton: I wonder where that came from
03:49 PM jthornton: it was not me lol
03:49 PM gloops: the line?
03:50 PM CaptHindsight: just helping you make breakfast
03:50 PM jthornton: about the broken egg that was yesterday
03:52 PM XXCoder: gloops: theres one japanese guy who tested demin, he tested to see how long it would last before stinking up
03:52 PM XXCoder: it never stank up, for 10 years
03:53 PM XXCoder: more longer you wear it before washing for first time, the more confortable it is
03:55 PM Deejay: gn8
03:57 PM gloops: cotton definately seems better for that than synthetics
04:21 PM gregcnc: a better way of washing clothes?
04:30 PM CaptHindsight: I picked up some 98% cotton and 2% spandex pants over the summer....
04:30 PM gregcnc: have you washed them yet?
04:30 PM CaptHindsight: they are treated with teflon
04:31 PM CaptHindsight: yeah, they mostly cleaned up with a damp rag
04:31 PM CaptHindsight: until you get oil and grease, ink, epoxy resin etc on them
04:32 PM CaptHindsight: they also dry in minutes
04:32 PM gregcnc: no dryer then?
04:32 PM CaptHindsight: not good for cold, welding etc
04:32 PM CaptHindsight: I washed them by hand
04:33 PM CaptHindsight: spilled water on them while on, and they were dry in minutes
04:34 PM CaptHindsight: have an until recently solid blue pair on now, chlorine bleach left spots (overspray)
04:35 PM CaptHindsight: don't care since they were $10
04:39 PM CaptHindsight: cotton with spandex, PTFE and copper could be a good combo
04:40 PM CaptHindsight: just don't wear it during an MRI
04:41 PM CaptHindsight: http://www.ajnr.org/content/ajnr/early/2012/03/01/ajnr.A2827.full.pdf
04:41 PM CaptHindsight: Invisible Metallic Microfiber in Clothing Presents Unrecognized MRI Risk for Cutaneous Burn
04:42 PM gregcnc: i read about that a while ago
04:43 PM _unreal_: arg.... waiting on this thing right now https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07DC8JV12/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
04:44 PM _unreal_: I need to do more sanding but I have one more coat of epoxy fingers crossed... and my plug mold for my tinkerboard/LCD will be ready
04:45 PM CaptHindsight: _unreal_: USB to 9 pins of GPIO?
04:46 PM CaptHindsight: er 2 x 9 so 18 pins of GPIO?
04:46 PM _unreal_: no
04:47 PM _unreal_: just a hub
04:47 PM _unreal_: gives 2 or 4 I'm not sure
04:47 PM gloops: also 10 coats of wax unreal
04:47 PM gloops: + 1 PVA
04:47 PM _unreal_: the description is poor and the reviews are SO so... so i'm taking a chance on it
04:47 PM _unreal_: ?
04:48 PM gloops: on the plug
04:48 PM _unreal_: oh oh the mold
04:48 PM CaptHindsight: OK, other listings mention USB hub
04:48 PM _unreal_: ya
04:49 PM _unreal_: I'm building molds for the front/back for a CASE very much like this but for a 7" https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/717k9IZlfoL._SX425_.jpg
04:50 PM _unreal_: the company that sells those does NOT make a 7" case
05:06 PM gloops: https://www.facebook.com/AnimalPlanet/videos/555246524925256/
05:09 PM andypugh: _unreal_: Ambitious.
05:09 PM andypugh: _unreal_: 3D printing or vac-forming not options?
05:10 PM _unreal_: LOL......
05:10 PM _unreal_: I'm a boat builder by trade.... fiberglass
05:10 PM _unreal_: I could even sell these cases if any one was interested
05:10 PM andypugh: I guess when your only tool is a hammer...
05:23 PM CaptHindsight: fiberglass hull printer
05:26 PM Tom_itx: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G1F4P9O_CO8
05:34 PM CaptHindsight: would you 3d print a boat, car, dog?
05:44 PM pink_vampire: hi jerryq
05:56 PM CaptHindsight: andypugh: any recommendations for lower melting point steel alloys suitable for small gears?
06:00 PM CaptHindsight: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maraging_steel
07:17 PM Jymmm: CaptHindsight silly putty
08:19 PM _unreal_: andypugh, everything is a nail get use to it
08:19 PM _unreal_: CaptHindsight, its called aluminum
09:37 PM Tom_itx is now known as Tom_L
