12:26 AM fragalot: hi
12:30 AM XXCoder: yo
12:31 AM fragalot: maybeI should go shower & go to the toilet to speed up the process
12:31 AM fragalot: :P
12:50 AM _abc_ is now known as Guest38926
01:36 AM XXCoder: At youtube: "Published on Nov 23, 2014 · 1 day ago"
01:37 AM MarcelineVQ: at least they're consistent
01:38 AM fragalot: that seems to be a bug that crops up every now and again
01:38 AM fragalot: may be due to the youtuber hiding & re-publishing the video
01:39 AM XXCoder: maybe
01:52 AM * fragalot hates waiting
01:53 AM _abc_ is now known as Guest19626
02:06 AM Deejay: moin
02:14 AM Tenacious-Techhu: XXCoder, anything that does STEP-NC?
02:36 AM fragalot: I keep hearing trucks getting my hopes up, but it keeps being a garbage truck :P
03:43 AM * Loetmichel just used the third "demo" start of cambam... MAAAN why didnt i buy that software six jears ago? ... just took a 4mm sheet metal drawing... "here a 2.5mm deep pocket with a 6mm mill bit, there 480 air holes from 2,5mm to 4.1mm deep with a 2mm mill bit, then a few 3.1mm holes for mounting with a 2mm bit, outer contour cutout, done... with the old "software" i would still be clicking
03:43 AM * Loetmichel on the air holes... and the mill is faster, too because it doesent mill "in air" 60% of the time... ;)
03:48 AM Loetmichel: ... still waiting on the license key though... to my surprise the boss ordered it the moment i showed him how much faster it is with that instead of using a 15 year old freeware tool ;)
03:56 AM fragalot: :)
03:56 AM fragalot: how come you haven't gotten the license key yet?
03:57 AM fragalot: I thought that was nearly instantaneous
03:57 AM fragalot: or do you have to pay the invoice first & does your boss like to wait the legal 90-day term before paying it
04:01 AM Loetmichel: i think they send the key by email the moment they get the money... but that can take a while with german banks
04:02 AM fragalot: s/german//
04:02 AM fragalot: I still don't get why it has to take this long given that it's literally all digital anyway
04:02 AM fragalot: it's not like they have to ship little mini pallets of gold around anymore
04:10 AM rmu|w: it doesn't have to, but banks use in-transit-money for all sorts of things
04:15 AM fragalot: GAH
04:15 AM fragalot: apparently the mill that was supposed to be delivered today is only going to get picked up today
04:15 AM fragalot: so I took the day off for no reason
04:16 AM * fragalot is not happy
04:16 AM * syyl_ gives fragalot a hug
04:17 AM fragalot: :(
04:17 AM syyl_: :)
04:17 AM syyl_: then you still can use the day for something usefull!
04:17 AM fragalot: going to get into work this afternoon I think.. don't really have all that much time off to spare
04:17 AM fragalot: and i'll need it for when the actual delivery happens
04:17 AM XXCoder: fire and brimstone tomorrow and tues
04:18 AM XXCoder: its already so bad its like fog here
04:18 AM fragalot: ^ that too. weathre is going to be horrible the rest of the week
04:18 AM XXCoder: while I work indoors, its like outdoors anyway wjhat with huge garage doors open
04:25 AM fragalot: I used to work in a shop like that
04:25 AM fragalot: was hell in winter as all the coolant froze in the machines
04:25 AM XXCoder: it never gets that cold in shop here
04:25 AM XXCoder: even snowing outside its maybe 65f inside
04:26 AM XXCoder: its hot end that sucks
04:29 AM fragalot: the place I work at now in the shop it's like a greenhouse
04:29 AM fragalot: the minute the sun comes peeking out from behind a cloud the temperature rises by 5°C
04:58 AM jthornton: morning
05:17 AM XXCoder: fragalot: fun
05:17 AM XXCoder: I work 2nd shift so its already near peak by time I come in
05:17 AM fragalot: ew. :P
05:18 AM XXCoder: it peaks 2 hours later and stays pretty hot for few more hours then taper off
05:21 AM fragalot: lbbl
05:23 AM jthornton: our temps dropped 10 degrees for the next few days
05:24 AM XXCoder: nice. here its 91f then 90f
05:24 AM XXCoder: fun
05:24 AM XXCoder: essentally hell and brimstone, tons smoke here
05:25 AM XXCoder: sadly it might be new normal summer
05:26 AM Tom_L: 66°F Hi 80 yay!
05:33 AM jthornton: we are not quite that low here
05:50 AM miss0r: Tom_L: we have the same here. Its a blessing after this hot summer
05:51 AM XXCoder: mind send over some of cold air here
05:51 AM XXCoder: not much just enough to get temp down to 85f something
05:51 AM miss0r: yeah I would mind, this is mine !:D
05:51 AM XXCoder: aww lol
05:52 AM miss0r: ... don't you just love being forced to reboot a server remotely & waiting what seems forever for it to come back online? :D
05:52 AM XXCoder: lol last time I had to do that was years ago
05:53 AM XXCoder: I was doing my homework on my pc... from reserant
05:53 AM miss0r: Yeah, me too. But I am in that situation right now
05:53 AM XXCoder: had to reboot
05:53 AM miss0r: did it come back online? :D
05:53 AM XXCoder: yeah thnkfully
05:54 AM miss0r: I'm beginning to get a warm & fuzzy feeling inside about this.
05:54 AM miss0r: (not the good kind)
05:54 AM XXCoder: my worse homework ever I had to use terminial to college computer from my sidekick2
05:54 AM XXCoder: I forgot to do that homework, and I had only hours no time to go anywhere
05:54 AM XXCoder: got A
05:54 AM miss0r: damn :D
05:55 AM miss0r: This is starting to have that unmistakable stench of me having to go for a drive :/
05:55 AM XXCoder: I remember this strange project hardware
05:56 AM XXCoder: its networked circuit that presses button on server
05:56 AM XXCoder: or rather, "presses" it
05:56 AM XXCoder: it simply sends current directly to wires for power button
05:56 AM miss0r: :) well, this server hase one of those network interfaces that is always on, that allows me to do that. BUT since it moved it has never been reimplimented :-/
05:59 AM XXCoder: well you got good reason now
06:00 AM miss0r: luckily I knew someone in there, who was onsite. apparently it decided to give a bios announcement that the keyboard was not attached :-/ It never did that before
06:00 AM XXCoder: weird
06:01 AM miss0r: that is realy weird.
06:01 AM miss0r: I mean, its an IBM x3650 something
06:01 AM miss0r: They should just fire right up
06:02 AM XXCoder: "keyboard not connected error, press F1"
06:02 AM miss0r: oh well... There are only a few services still left running on that thing. Most of what it used to do is now running on the amazon cloud. Within the next two months it will be taken down
06:02 AM miss0r: yeah
06:07 AM miss0r: I have all the services back online now. *phew*
06:07 AM XXCoder: :)
06:09 AM fragalot: Hi
06:17 AM selroc: hello
06:18 AM miss0r: o/
06:18 AM miss0r: did the mill come yet?
06:18 AM selroc: I don't remember who has posted it, this is a cool machine https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bd3UCLH1YuM
06:19 AM miss0r: ye flipping god! I'm getting seasick!
06:22 AM XXCoder: off to bed I go
06:22 AM XXCoder: yeah that videos pretty bad
06:31 AM fragalot: miss0r: no, apparently it hasn't even been picked up yet
06:32 AM miss0r: >.< !
06:32 AM fragalot: exactly my thoughts
06:32 AM miss0r: well then.. Not like you took the day off or anything
06:34 AM fragalot: I did.
06:34 AM miss0r: I know :D
07:14 AM Loetmichel: maan, XXCoder and fragalot have it easy... just measured in the workshop after having the shopvac running for 4 hours (vacuum table)... 39°C (102F)... :-)
07:14 AM Loetmichel: its like a sauna in there already
07:26 AM Deejay: no windows?
07:26 AM Deejay: 19°C outside...
07:26 AM fragalot: Loetmichel: you mean I have it easy in my AC equipped office?
07:26 AM Loetmichel: Deejay: no windows. no air exhaust at all ;)
07:26 AM fragalot: how dare you :D
07:32 AM gloops: its humid here
07:33 AM gloops: not really hot but very crappy
07:38 AM fragalot: 87% humidity @ home right now
07:42 AM gloops: well, ive populated my new (old) windows PC with everything i need to draw, i think ill be staying with windows for a while, with linux on seperate boot
08:05 AM miss0r: quite nice here: 20c 53% humidity
08:17 AM syyl_: 24 inside :)
08:17 AM syyl_: rain would be nice
08:18 AM syyl_: just finished scraping/rebuilding another schaublin cross slide.. :D
08:18 AM Loetmichel: syyl_: nope... rain would be bad... would have to run to close my cars canopy then ;)
08:19 AM syyl_: your car situation is a personal problem ;)
08:19 AM Loetmichel: (i parked it with open hood this morning ;)
08:19 AM Loetmichel: indeed, still i dont want to run ;)
08:36 AM fragalot: syyl_: you getting better (read: faster) at scraping? :)
08:36 AM syyl_: 20hours for a complete x/y of a schaublin 102
08:37 AM syyl_: :)
08:38 AM fragalot: not bad :)
08:40 AM syyl_: included fitting a new tapered gib
08:40 AM syyl_: :)
08:41 AM Loetmichel: hrhr... just made a tool to mount M3 "rivet in" bolts into a 4mm thick alu front panel... about 22 rivets set, the 6mm steel shaft i used to make the tool is already mushroomed to 12mm diameter on the back... shouldnt have used mild steel for that i think ;)
08:42 AM Loetmichel: ... or maybe i should not use so much force (and a smaller hammer?)
08:43 AM fragalot: Loetmichel: or a brass hammer.. round the hammer instead P
08:43 AM fragalot: :P
08:56 AM _abc_ is now known as Guest99470
08:57 AM * JT-Shop needs a cheap pwm drive and motor to test with
09:29 AM pcw_home: https://www.ebay.com/itm/2Pcs-Dual-H-Bridge-L298N-PWM-Stepper-Motor-Drive-Controller-Board-Module-Arduino/192023831972?epid=2035469392&hash=item2cb58325a4:g:uwoAAOSwA3dYJG22
09:29 AM pcw_home: about as cheap as you can get...
09:30 AM Loetmichel: JT-Shop: define "cheap PWM drive and motor" in size/voltage/power
09:31 AM * Loetmichel has made PWM controllers for forklifts... only 1200A peak capability at 60V... not THAT cheap though ;9
09:32 AM jthornton: that's cheap enough for sure thanks
09:37 AM JT-Shop: Loetmichel: none of that matters, I just need to test the pwm output from a 7i96
09:37 AM Loetmichel: ah
09:37 AM Loetmichel: i see
09:37 AM Loetmichel: was a valid question though
09:38 AM jdh: use a scope instead?
09:38 AM SpeedEvil: L298 is terrible though.
09:38 AM pcw_home: Do you have a small DC motor with encoder? we have a bunch of 19V 3A plotter motors around
09:38 AM SpeedEvil: (~5V or so drop)
10:50 AM fragalot: man this weather station has the WORST screen I have ever seen
10:51 AM fragalot: nice color LCD, but the viewing angle is like a 2° window, and it's a top-view but tilts back when put on a flat surface
10:51 AM fragalot: so if you put it on your desk and look at it, it's just black
10:51 AM fragalot: if you put it on a wall, it has to be near hip height or it's also black
10:52 AM jdh: return it.
10:52 AM fragalot: will do that tomorrow
10:53 AM fragalot: I also like how it has batteries for backup power, except it doesn't actually appear to keep the date time settings if you unplug it
10:53 AM fragalot: :P
10:54 AM gloops: post on DIY cnc machines facebook might interest you fragalot
10:54 AM gloops: Jeff Dill building epoxy mill
10:55 AM fragalot: it's facebook, so I can't see it anyway
10:59 AM gloops: https://ibb.co/jSfdLz
11:00 AM fragalot: solid design, table could be wider with the rails flipped around
11:02 AM gloops: some doubts over his using steppers
11:03 AM fragalot: depends on the torque they put out and his expected speeds
11:03 AM fragalot: I went with hybrids for my build, because I wanted the reliability of servo's with the price tag of steppers :D
11:05 AM Loetmichel: fragalot: arent the hybrid stepper drivers expensive?
11:05 AM fragalot: compared to normal steppers: yes
11:05 AM fragalot: compared to servo's? no
11:07 AM gloops: also the ballscrews to consider
11:07 AM fragalot: 5x16 should be alright for that size
11:10 AM gloops: steppers + c7 ballscrews - forget .00
11:10 AM * jthornton just tossed out a plotter a few weeks ago
11:12 AM fragalot: gloops: yup.. 50µm / 300mm.
11:12 AM gregcnc: screw comp
11:13 AM fragalot: gregcnc: does that include variable backlash?
11:14 AM gregcnc: 50USD screws?
11:15 AM fragalot: no, screw comp
11:15 AM gregcnc: you can get preloaded C7 screws
11:15 AM skunkworks: anyone have experiences with a goodish cheap digital storage scope?
11:16 AM fragalot: skunkworks: yes
11:16 AM fragalot: first question: what do you want to use it for?
11:16 AM skunkworks: mainly replacing a 60mhz B&K from the 80's
11:16 AM skunkworks: general electronics..
11:17 AM fragalot: can't really go wrong with most budget 100Mhz scopes then
11:17 AM skunkworks: might even be 30mhz. ;)
11:17 AM jdh: and they are small enough to keep around
11:18 AM fragalot: skunkworks: do you need digital channels, or only analog?
11:18 AM fragalot: and how many
11:18 AM skunkworks: heh - cradek, what was the one that you had at the fest in wichita?
11:20 AM fragalot: i've got the well known rigol DS1052E at home, with the 100Mhz 'hack', and use a rigol MSO2202A-S at work
11:20 AM fragalot: the home one is VERY basic, the one at work is great for embedded development
11:21 AM skunkworks: I remember that. As far as digital lines - I don't know.
11:23 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
11:25 AM cradek: skunkworks: I love my tek 2232 but I don't recall traveling with it
11:25 AM cradek: I also have a 466, which is analog storage
11:25 AM skunkworks: hmm - I wonder who's we used..
11:25 AM fragalot: for travel we have an older tektronix.. great little portable scope
11:25 AM cradek: jepler just bought a cheapish pure digital
11:25 AM fragalot: 100Mhz, 4 channels that fully float up to 600V
11:25 AM cradek: if my 2232 died I would try to find another one for reasonable cost. the best part is you can switch it to analog mode and then it's full analog.
11:25 AM skunkworks: ah - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x6hzesMM7EM
11:25 AM fragalot: only annoying thing is that it uses CF cards for storage :p
11:25 AM skunkworks: tds 320
11:25 AM cradek: oh that's not mine, I've never had a full digital
11:26 AM jdh: I have a tds3045 and 2024 in a drawer here
11:26 AM cradek: that's clearly me sitting to the left though
11:26 AM skunkworks: wow - the ms02202a-2 are expensive...
11:26 AM skunkworks: cradek: yes :)
11:28 AM skunkworks: I know I had looked at the rigol DS1052E a while back
11:28 AM fragalot: skunkworks: well, it IS a lot of scope :-)
11:28 AM fragalot: my main gripe with the DS1052E is that it's very low resolution, screen wise
11:28 AM fragalot: if you're OK with that, it's an alright scope for the money
11:28 AM fragalot: if you have a bit more, get one of the 1000Z series
11:29 AM fragalot: or a siglent.. or any of the other budget brands. There aren't all that many bad ones these days :-)
11:29 AM skunkworks: like https://www.ebay.com/itm/Rigol-DS1054Z-Digital-Oscilloscopes-Bandwidth-50-Mhz-Channels-4/332683906290?epid=18019367133&hash=item4d75818cf2:g:EHYAAOSwUoNaA4By
11:30 AM fragalot: if you're OK with the 50Mhz bandwidth, sure
11:31 AM jdh: can't you make it 100 + decode?
11:32 AM Roguish: cradek: hey I have a 2246. like it a lot.
11:32 AM jdh: owon cheapies have high res screen but low res front end
11:32 AM fragalot: jdh: probably, i've not checked for the Z series
11:33 AM fragalot: PS. if you contact a dealer it's possible they will throw in some upgrade options for free
11:33 AM fragalot: they did for our MSO2202A-S anyway
11:34 AM fragalot: but I guess that's a different budget clas
11:52 AM gloops: 1 000 000% inflation in Venezuala, where did it all go wrong
11:52 AM jdh: MVGA!
11:52 AM fragalot: gloops: a looong time ago
11:52 AM gloops: venezuala was always great!
11:53 AM fragalot: it's been a hell hole for ages
11:54 AM gloops: i wonder which extremist ideology will take root now
11:59 AM miss0r: so what I hear is: if you want to be a millionaire, move to Venezuala
12:00 PM fragalot: :D
12:09 PM gloops: biggest oil reserves in the world - no toilet paper
12:09 PM fragalot: gloops: one word: corruption
12:12 PM gloops: some bad luck as well, oil price collapse etc
12:12 PM fragalot: mostly corruption
12:13 PM gloops: also socialism
12:14 PM gloops: chavez raised the minimum wage 3600%
12:14 PM fragalot: don't forget the large scale corruption
12:16 PM skunkworks: and large scale corruption
12:16 PM fragalot: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjjdgp7yMUA
12:16 PM fragalot: I think that is the mots detailed rebuild video I have seen so far
12:17 PM gloops: well i dont know, a bit of cream is always skimmed off the top in these places
12:21 PM miss0r: fragalot: And just when I thought I was going to have a productive evening :D
12:22 PM fragalot: miss0r: ha.
12:23 PM miss0r: I'll get you some day for this!
12:23 PM fragalot: no you won't :-)
12:24 PM miss0r: and if I do, you would never make the same mistake as me; admiting it!
12:24 PM fragalot: I never make mistakes
12:24 PM fragalot: :D
12:24 PM miss0r: bah
12:26 PM miss0r: also; please complete your CNC before embarking on such a restoring job on your new mill ;)
12:27 PM fragalot: haha, yeah
12:27 PM fragalot: i'm assuming it's going to be in good enough condition that it is ACTUALLY USABLE
12:28 PM miss0r: you also assumed you'd have it today.. how did that assumption work you? :þ
12:29 PM fragalot: I was going off of information that was given to me, that was not my mistake.
12:30 PM miss0r: also true. But would you say the same is true about the state of the machine?
12:30 PM miss0r: also: Damn that is a nice rebuild
12:32 PM fragalot: it really is :D
12:32 PM fragalot: i've only half-watched the first half whilst cooking
12:32 PM fragalot: so no spoilers
12:32 PM * fragalot gares
12:32 PM fragalot: glares*
12:32 PM fragalot: .. that was the keyboard making a mistake, not me.
12:33 PM miss0r: right - because you never make mistake ;)
12:33 PM fragalot: Exactly.
12:34 PM fragalot: adapt, improvise, overcome.
12:35 PM miss0r: You just felt like writing that, didn't you?
12:36 PM gloops: and if that fails, a total pig headed refusal to accept the facts will see you through
12:38 PM fragalot: ^
12:38 PM fragalot: worked for venezuela
12:38 PM miss0r: define 'worked'
12:38 PM fragalot: the number in their bank accounts skyrocketed
12:40 PM miss0r: alright then, it worked ;P
01:01 PM fragalot: this is great
01:01 PM fragalot: I can sign up for notifications on status changes on the tracking number for my mill
01:02 PM fragalot: last status change was 4 hours ago, and I just got an email now that i've opened the web page to check on it manually
01:02 PM skunkworks: status changed - reason unknown
01:02 PM fragalot: I'm wondering if that's what triggered it, or if it's just concidental and they update the email system at 8pm
01:06 PM _abc_ is now known as Guest42947
01:07 PM Tom_L: skunkworks, https://www.amazon.com/Rigol-DS1102E-Digital-Oscilloscopes-Bandwidth/dp/B0039N9ZBA
01:08 PM fragalot: the Z zeries really is a LOT nicer
01:09 PM Tom_L: https://www.top5reviewed.com/rigol-oscilloscopes/
01:10 PM skunkworks: that one has already been 'hacked'?
01:10 PM JT-Shop: dang $61 to ship some boxes to me from uline...
01:11 PM Tom_L: i generally use a logic analyser and don't have a rigol but i've heard of alot of guys getting and liking them
01:11 PM fragalot: JT-Shop: and that's before you find out they charge $7 per box
01:11 PM _abc_ is now known as Guest42739
01:11 PM Tom_L: i've got an old phillips 100Mhz
01:12 PM Tom_L: seldom use it
01:12 PM JT-Shop: prices per box is reasonable but shipping sucks
01:12 PM Tom_L: i got 2 probes smaller than a dime and cost me 11 + shipping
01:13 PM Tom_L: i figured i'd get 2 to get my value from shipping
01:13 PM Tom_L: if there is such a thing
01:16 PM _abc_ is now known as Guest18801
01:21 PM _abc_ is now known as Guest47218
01:31 PM fragalot_ is now known as fragalot
01:33 PM jthornton: yea I'm going to inventory my boxes and add some more to the order to get the cost per box down
01:34 PM miss0r: I just dropped a M1.8 for my one of my indexable tools on the lathe into the chip tray
01:35 PM jthornton: and the chip tray is never clean when that happens
01:35 PM miss0r: I FSCKING FOUND IT !
01:35 PM miss0r: well, it was close to clean, but that screw is minute!
01:35 PM roycroft: it's like finding a drill bit in a swarf stack
01:35 PM jthornton: you better buy a lottery ticket if you guys have that stuff
01:36 PM * roycroft is back from holidays
01:37 PM fragalot: miss0r: haha, good job you cleaned recently
01:37 PM fragalot: also - buy a pack of spare screws
01:38 PM miss0r: fragalot: I thank my lucky star.
01:38 PM fragalot: you're welcome
01:39 PM miss0r: Get over yourself :]
01:40 PM fragalot: never
01:46 PM miss0r: fragalot: amongst the stuff my friend brought over last was a cute little assortment of slitting saws. those 32mm ones. ranging from 0.2mm thickness to 0.8
01:46 PM miss0r: I just need to make a small arbor for them. they fit on an 8mm shank
01:46 PM fragalot: sweet
01:46 PM fragalot: I remember ordering a few of those and getting unexpected extras because they're so thin & stuck together during order picking
01:47 PM miss0r: yeah :] they feel like handeling shims
01:47 PM miss0r: I also got a 55degree cutter for 16mm shank :D
01:47 PM * fragalot also has multiple 55 degree cutters
01:47 PM miss0r: but it is only 12.5 mm tall
01:48 PM miss0r:
01:48 PM fragalot: oh mine are HUGE :D
01:48 PM miss0r: hehe :D I've already got use for one of the small slitting saws
01:48 PM miss0r: I need to make a 0.86mm wide slot in a screw head
01:49 PM miss0r: and doing that with a 0.8mm endmill is just suicide
01:49 PM miss0r: well, it will make you want to commit suicide, is what I was getting at
01:50 PM fragalot: what you need is a good high speed head :D
01:51 PM miss0r: yeah.. that would be nice
01:51 PM miss0r: but you still can't beat the slotting speed of a slitting saw
01:51 PM fragalot: very true
01:51 PM fragalot: are you expecting any deflection, or is the arbor going to choke up on it?
01:52 PM miss0r: Well, theres always 'some' deflection. But I'm planning to make the arbor of a 16mm chrome nickel rod.
01:52 PM miss0r: and just have the very end fit the bore
01:53 PM miss0r: with a 16mm spacer on the other side clamping it in
01:53 PM miss0r: I think deflection will be minimal
01:53 PM fragalot: 8mm left to slot with, with a .8mm thickness.. Should be acceptable
01:54 PM miss0r: I think it will...
01:54 PM miss0r: but hanging a 32mm disk at the end of an 8mm rod - even with spacers in there, will be wonky at best
01:54 PM fragalot: lol of course
01:55 PM fragalot: you'd need at least 10mm
01:55 PM miss0r: heh
01:55 PM miss0r: anyway, a fairly short 16mm rod will do the trick, not even breaking a sweat
01:55 PM fragalot: with an O-ring friction drive to make sure you can't bind it up
01:55 PM fragalot: yeah i've used 16mm for mine too
01:56 PM miss0r: yeah, no...
01:56 PM fragalot: relieve the clamping washer/spacer a bit
01:57 PM miss0r: and stick an o-ring in there? :S
01:57 PM fragalot: that was a joke
01:57 PM miss0r: I would rather not
01:57 PM miss0r: you never know, when it comes to you :]
01:57 PM fragalot: :D
01:58 PM miss0r: yeah. I think I might go ahead and harden the tool, grind ect
02:31 PM JT-Shop: I guess I'll go bend some pipes to finish my day
02:55 PM nallar is now known as Ross
03:43 PM Deejay: gn8
04:15 PM infornography: will pycam generate Gcode in inches?
04:24 PM gloops: hmm, not used it, Ichs knows it but not here atm
04:24 PM infornography: what do you use?
04:25 PM gloops: various apps really, havent you tried fusion360?
04:27 PM Tom_L: i can't see why it wouldn't
04:27 PM JT-Shop: for simple G code or complex stuff?
04:27 PM Tom_L: most cad cam can do both
04:28 PM Tom_L: http://pycam.sourceforge.net/features/
04:28 PM Tom_L: Measurement unit: millimeter or inches
04:30 PM infornography: appsolutle
04:31 PM infornography: absolutely proprietary
04:31 PM infornography: stallman.jpg
04:32 PM gregcnc: anyone deal with IMS Gear? US offices don't bother to answer phones and email to Germany goes unanswered
04:33 PM cpresser: IMS?
04:33 PM infornography: I was able to play with pycam a little last night, but the generated code was always in metric. I will have to play with it some more.
04:33 PM Tom_L: it may depend on A) the units of your model or B) the way your post is defined
04:40 PM CaptHindsight: gregcnc: might not be "geared" toward dealing direct with not established customers
04:41 PM gregcnc: I don't know, they make it clear they will sell one piece on their site
04:43 PM srk: infornography: freecad 0.17 has nice CAM workbench
04:44 PM infornography: freecad .17 is on my download list
04:45 PM gloops: infornography are you working on windows or linux?
04:46 PM infornography: linux
04:47 PM gloops: working with metal?
04:48 PM infornography: Nothing yet, but will be aluminum and plastic.
04:50 PM gloops: freecad is ok for part making, the problem comes with more artisitic stuff, blender has a CAM plugin which looks useful for that, but not used it yet
04:51 PM infornography: I loaded .16 out of the repo and played with it enough to make a cube and load it into pycam
04:53 PM infornography: Learning freecad, pycam, and linuxcnc all at once is going to be a bigger project than I initially thought.
04:54 PM infornography: I still need to get the mill going too.
04:55 PM Tom_L: nothing like diving in head first
04:56 PM infornography: There wouldn't happen to be someone in here with a MaxNC 10 OL? I'm trying to find specs for the steppers
04:56 PM gloops: dont bother with pycam just learn freecad
04:57 PM infornography: Freecad can generate the gcode then?
04:57 PM Tom_L: i believe so
04:59 PM gloops: yeah, theyve been working on the CAM thing recently, i think it is pretty useable now
04:59 PM gloops: i dont think pycam has been worked on for a few years, might be wrong
05:00 PM infornography: I thought I had found the specs for the steppers, but the page doesn't load now that I need the info
05:00 PM gloops: also, not so many tutorials or much documentation for pycam
05:00 PM infornography: Yeah I think I read that pycam is pretty static now
05:14 PM _unreal_: Freaking hell
05:14 PM _unreal_: long ass day at work
05:15 PM _unreal_: Ok one more time slightly different crowd of people in here. any one think these are total crap or a rip off? https://www.amazon.com/Nema23-Stepper-FMD2740C-Breakut-Controller/dp/B07236CFKC/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1534735983&sr=8-8&keywords=cnc+controller
05:22 PM Tom_L: the red board you could toss in the river but just my opinion
05:22 PM Tom_L: only USB cnc
05:22 PM Tom_L: not realtime
05:23 PM _unreal_: redboard?
05:23 PM _unreal_: Oh that controller board
05:23 PM _unreal_: I'll prob use that controller board for my home cnc
05:24 PM Tom_L: i would want them to be the same personally
05:24 PM Tom_L: ymmv
05:25 PM _unreal_: ?
05:25 PM _unreal_: I dont know what ymmv means
05:25 PM Tom_L: your mileage may vary
05:26 PM Tom_L: i'd ask around about the drivers, i'm not familiar with them
05:26 PM Tom_L: the steppers look ok
05:26 PM _unreal_: me neather
05:26 PM Tom_L: like i said, i'd toss the red board
05:27 PM Tom_L: maybe salvage the connectors :)
05:27 PM Tom_L: it must be specific to one system
05:27 PM Tom_L: not mach3 or linuxcnc
05:31 PM _unreal_: Tom_L, its universal
05:31 PM _unreal_: its JUST an arduino
05:31 PM _unreal_: under the metal can
05:32 PM Tom_L: if you wanna run grbl then ok
05:32 PM Tom_L: that's probably what it is
05:41 PM _unreal_: My things are simple.... its the best total kit package I've found so far
05:41 PM _unreal_: unless someone points me to something even better
05:42 PM Tom_L: you should ask ich, he's got the components figured out
05:42 PM Tom_L: as far as cost vs performance
05:42 PM Tom_L: he's in germany so you can figure when he may be here
05:43 PM Tom_L: gloops, what' that other nick he's been using?
05:45 PM Tom_L: or anybody for that matter...
05:47 PM jthornton: pcw_home: what is the max pwm frequency for the 7i96?
05:48 PM Tom_L: JT, looks like you're gettin wet today
05:49 PM _unreal_: hum
06:10 PM Rab: "This cnc kit only support USB CNC Software, not for Mach3 software"...if not Mach3, which software does it support?
06:10 PM jthornton: yea a line of thunder storms rolled through a while ago
06:12 PM Rab: I guess it comes with software.
06:12 PM Tom_L: sorta
06:17 PM infornography: help!
06:18 PM infornography: I figured out the steppers on the maxnc 10 are:
06:18 PM infornography: http://www.mpja.com/Stepper-Motor-NEMA-23-24V/productinfo/15837%20MS/
06:19 PM infornography: rated at .18a @ 24v
06:19 PM infornography: the driver I have is :
06:20 PM infornography: https://hobbycnc.com/product/ez-board-kit/
06:20 PM infornography: I don't think the pots will adjust down far enough to get to .18a ...
06:21 PM infornography: my math tells me this doesn't work, but I hope I am wrong.
06:22 PM infornography: The only other steppers I have nema34 and they do not fit :(
06:23 PM _unreal_: infornography, I could be worng but I think thats a typo
06:23 PM _unreal_: thats a NEMA23 motor looks like a step syn
06:23 PM _unreal_: by sanyo
06:23 PM _unreal_: its prob 1.8a
06:23 PM jdh: 50oz/in
06:23 PM _unreal_: not 0.18A.... a motor that size is NOT likely to only draw 180ma of power
06:24 PM _unreal_: YA 1.8a
06:24 PM infornography: https://www.ebay.com/itm/SANYO-DENKI-STEP-SYN-STEPPING-MOTOR-TYPE-103-771-18-4240593/122408117746?epid=696025583&hash=item1c8017a5f2:g:4OIAAOSwdGFY0Vh2:sc:USPSPriority!74937!US!-1
06:24 PM infornography: the top of this one reads .18 too
06:25 PM infornography: I want to turn the driver down all the way and just run it and see what happens, but I need moral support
06:26 PM jdh: go for it.
06:26 PM _unreal_: OHHHHHH 24v
06:26 PM _unreal_: infornography, what voltage are you running?
06:27 PM infornography: I can run 12 now, or 24 later this week
06:27 PM infornography: I have a 24v power supply on the way
06:28 PM _unreal_: ok then you should be fine.... its higher voltage rated meaning it has a higher internal resistance....
06:28 PM _unreal_: if the motor gets stupid hot then turn off the power
06:28 PM _unreal_: 0.18 at 50oz huh....
06:28 PM _unreal_: Thats kind of a shitty design........
06:29 PM _unreal_: I've seen much smaller motors hold that
06:29 PM infornography: If it was 4v it would be 1.08 amp yeah? I like to think anyway
06:29 PM _unreal_: just watch the heat. if it gets hot ether put a fan on it OR get a driver that can run low amperage.
06:30 PM Tom_L: chopper driver
06:30 PM _unreal_: infornography, I dont know depends on the number of windings. the guage of the wire
06:30 PM Tom_L: most drivers now are
06:30 PM infornography: yeah, I'm runnung a chopper
06:31 PM _unreal_: infornography, so long story short... thats a lot of motor for very little holding tourque
06:31 PM infornography: Thats what is on there at the moment though
06:31 PM _unreal_: infornography, you could use like a 4ohm 50watt dropping ceramic resistor on the +v pin
06:32 PM _unreal_: if the motor gets hot
06:32 PM jthornton: say goodnight Gracie
06:33 PM _unreal_: I have some nema34 stepsyn motors that are 4.5v 1.4A and they hold 200oz
06:33 PM _unreal_: err 260oz
06:36 PM _unreal_: the cans are tiny though :)
06:37 PM _unreal_: I use to have 4 but they were the first motors I got..... and saddly being new to them I took a few apart. not knowing that would kill the magnet :(
06:37 PM _unreal_: I had some REALLLY nice motors that I stupidly took apart like 15 years ago :(
06:38 PM _unreal_: oh well
06:38 PM _unreal_: Wasnt till after I took em apart and left them sitting on my desk that I came across a single blog post that stated "BTW OPENING MOTORS IS BAD".... I read more and cried
06:40 PM infornography: lol
06:40 PM infornography: now I too know
06:41 PM _unreal_: ? why have you taken some apart?
06:42 PM infornography: No, but I wouldn't have thought much about it until you said that.
06:42 PM _unreal_: even today...... :( I think I destroyed about $1k worth in motors just pulling them apart...... really big steppers to.....
06:43 PM _unreal_: I was doing some part time work for a guy pulling materials salave metals from BIG hardware
06:43 PM _unreal_: really old printers etc......
06:43 PM _unreal_: :(
06:43 PM infornography: RIP motors
06:43 PM _unreal_: When Is say printer I mean 5'x5'x8'
06:43 PM _unreal_: IBM printers
06:43 PM _unreal_: dot matrix
06:44 PM _unreal_: just BIG
06:44 PM _unreal_: some of those steppers were like 6" diam
06:44 PM _unreal_: round cans
06:44 PM _unreal_: just BIG
06:46 PM infornography: I gotta go do life stuff, thanks #linuxcnc
07:10 PM _unreal_: There just ordered one of these https://www.ebay.com/itm/272596155477
07:19 PM CaptHindsight: *duino!

07:27 PM CaptHindsight: https://boundarydevices.com/product/nitrogen8m-imx8/ not low cost
07:28 PM CaptHindsight: at these prices you might as well stay with x86
08:50 PM Roguish: check it out https://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/for/d/for-sale-cnc-mini-mill/6675693282.html
08:51 PM hazzy-lab: Roguish: is that yours?
08:51 PM hazzy-lab: looks nice
08:51 PM Roguish: no, just cruising Craigslist.
08:51 PM hazzy-lab: ok
08:52 PM hazzy-lab: looks like it is well put together, don't see many of those out there

09:11 PM skunkworks: http://electronicsam.com/images/greenmachine/20180820_192430.jpg
09:12 PM Tom_L: is cast easier to machine than steel?
09:13 PM skunkworks: maybe easier.. but nastier. can still taste it
09:13 PM Tom_L: heh
09:13 PM skunkworks: try to run a vacuum a lot
09:22 PM _unreal_: I.MX lol thats funny... thats based on the CUBOX system
09:24 PM _unreal_: stinkworks what cha making?
09:27 PM skunkworks: _unreal_: a riser for a small cnc
09:28 PM skunkworks: http://electronicsam.com/images/greenmachine/20180710_174652.jpg
09:29 PM skunkworks: http://electronicsam.com/images/greenmachine/20180812_142526R.jpg
09:30 PM _unreal_: nifty
09:30 PM _unreal_: skunkworks, did you cast that or are you rebuilding it?
09:31 PM Tom_L: it was a large scrap he had
09:31 PM _unreal_: ?
09:31 PM Tom_L: re'purposed iron
09:31 PM _unreal_: scrap to what. looks sand cast or baddly pitted from rust
09:33 PM skunkworks: it was a chunk of cast from an old grinder we had
09:33 PM skunkworks: big enough (barely) for this project
09:36 PM skunkworks: http://electronicsam.com/images/matsuura/20180707_121142.jpg
09:37 PM _unreal_: flicing hell thats big what ever it is...
