12:00 AM Tom_L: that's where i found the 2nd one
12:03 AM sync: yes CaptHindsight
12:03 AM Tom_L: do you have some?
12:03 AM sync: yes
12:03 AM Tom_L: same control?
12:03 AM sync: no
12:03 AM Tom_L: i like that it's 0-10v analog since that's what i'm using right now
12:03 AM Tom_L: but not if it's gonna blow right off
12:03 AM Tom_L: it would be nice if they had the case for the boards
12:03 AM sync: meh analog
12:03 AM Tom_L: i've never tried modbus
12:04 AM sync: sserial is the way to go
12:04 AM Tom_L: i've got that set up already
12:04 AM Tom_L: just not using it right now
12:05 AM Tom_L: how do you send spindle signals over sserial?
12:06 AM sync: we use a position/velocity signal
12:07 AM CaptHindsight: Tom_L: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1NF8EFoPlrk
12:07 AM CaptHindsight: he used a Chinese VFD but a servo or BLDC controller would be similar
12:07 AM sync: (mind you, we are making our own servodrives that speak sserial directly)
12:11 AM Tom_L: ahh yeah i remember you talking about those
12:27 AM CaptHindsight: https://www.ebay.com/itm/SEM-BMF115J6-60T-Brushless-DC-Servo-Motor-180V-24A-3000RPM-3-8-Shaft/220965735216 $265 and only 3k rpm
12:42 AM CaptHindsight: https://www.ebay.com/itm/PARKER-HANNIFIN-BRUSHLESS-SERVO-MOTOR-7500-RPM-1-Kw-CM343FR-DRIVE-COMPUMOTOR/153048394070
12:42 AM CaptHindsight: NEW $200 7500 rpm, 1KW
01:07 AM IchGucksLive: motning from Germany
01:08 AM IchGucksLive: cld fingers
01:08 AM IchGucksLive: guten morgen ;-)
01:08 AM IchGucksLive: Tom_L, im with you on 0-10
01:09 AM miss0r: goodmorning
01:59 AM IchGucksLive: gloops, ?
01:59 AM IchGucksLive: miss0r, how is the feeling after yesterdays big day
02:00 AM IchGucksLive: miss0r, privat and commercial success
02:00 AM miss0r: feeling like any other day, basically :] That'll start to change once she gets fat and sweaty.. :D
02:00 AM IchGucksLive: miss0r, lots of saurcream in stock helps much
02:01 AM miss0r: 'round here its chokolate that works :D
02:01 AM IchGucksLive: bad take it away
02:01 AM IchGucksLive: get hr to more low carbon
02:01 AM IchGucksLive: here
02:02 AM IchGucksLive: the 2nd will shape her up
02:02 AM miss0r: It seems to make her less hissy
02:07 AM IchGucksLive: im off
02:42 AM miss0r: I'm off to go pick up the new EDM. see you around
02:45 AM Deejay: moin
04:13 AM Loetmichel: *cough* *spit* Note to self: next time one looks if the CNC mill is doing good: close mouth. got the stream of aluminium "dust" swarf from the mill bit at 24krpm riiiight into my mouth... Aluminium isnt that healthy when ingested i heard :-(
04:21 AM rmu: Loetmichel: your stomach will convert it into some aluminium organo complex and hydrogen gas. wouldn't smoke for a while *g*
04:25 AM Loetmichel: wasnt THAT much dust.
04:25 AM Loetmichel: but as far as i know aluminium in blood causes dementia over time...
04:25 AM Loetmichel: that worries me a bit more
04:32 AM rmu: Loetmichel: i think these latest "aluminium is the root of autism, brexit, trump and dementia" is mass-hysteria, aluminium is everywhere
04:36 AM Loetmichel: i certainly hope so... could be that the romans said the same about lead though ;)
04:37 AM rmu: lead in its metallic form doesn't harm you
04:38 AM rmu: the problem with lead pipes is that you can easily create a "battery" that creates water-borne lead ions, those are bad
04:41 AM Loetmichel: yes
04:41 AM Loetmichel: and aluminium sadly is dissolvend by stomach acids into a "blood compatible" ion form.
04:54 AM rmu: Loetmichel: i wouldn't worry too much, aluminium is very reactive, AlCl3 will make some complex or react with P and make unsoluble AlPO4 or something like that
04:56 AM XXCoder: lead is very much a real danger
04:56 AM XXCoder: alum is not as bad
05:29 AM jthornton-: morning
05:29 AM XXCoder: hey
06:10 AM Tom_L: morning
06:16 AM jthornton-: morning
06:16 AM jthornton-: might get the sheetrock hung up today.... damn this project is dragging on
06:17 AM XXCoder: projects always do
06:19 AM Tecan- is now known as Tecan
06:23 AM jthornton-: had to work all day yesterday so no progress
06:24 AM Tom_L: didn't sell a 2nd rock tumbler yet did ya?
06:25 AM jthornton-: nope
06:27 AM Tom_L: 77°F, Hi 97
06:29 AM jthornton-: 71-93 here
06:58 AM Loetmichel: ah, btw: this morning the water was cold again... (you remember the thing with the boiler pilot light shutting off?) heard a "THUMP" last night followed by a metallic crash. thought nothing of it but "must be some misignition of a car"... this morning i went down into the cellar to restart the boiler... found the front cover of the furnace on the other side of the room and its "burner problem"
06:58 AM Loetmichel: light on... (WTH is that thing starting in summer mode anyways?) so i'll go out on a limb here saying that the furnace must have some "hiccup" and the pressure wave from it blew out the pilot of the boiler... and i'd wager taht was the problem the last few times also, just a little less pronounced so the cover stayed in place...
07:05 AM jthornton-: exploding boilers!
07:13 AM jthornton- is now known as jthornton
09:21 AM Loetmichel: jthornton_ nope, boiler is still fine... its just standing right next to the furnace (both natural gas)... and i think the furnace has problems with starting and "blows" the pilot of the boiler out
09:37 AM Loetmichel: hmmm... anybody an idea whats the cheapest lasercutter that is able to cut 0.2mm thick stainless steel and has at least 600mm by 400mm cutting travel?
09:37 AM Loetmichel: +aviable
09:54 AM IchGucksLive: hi
10:20 AM IchGucksLive: im off till later
11:12 AM ktc is now known as Guest7236
11:32 AM fragalot: miss0r: hur dur I just got an invoice from fedex for import duties for those 2 little bottles of canode I bought
11:32 AM fragalot: canode, $15 a bottle from the US, $30 shipping,.. €72 invoice for import duties.
11:36 AM jesseg: yikes... what country did that to you?
11:36 AM fragalot: belgium
11:36 AM jesseg: LOL oh OK...
11:36 AM jesseg: because according to google, 72 euros is currently around $84 USD
11:36 AM fragalot: yup
11:37 AM jesseg: which seems drastically high for the amount you spent on product
11:37 AM fragalot: yup
11:38 AM jesseg: so what is import duties - like 200% of cost+shipping ?
11:38 AM jesseg: You guys must be really really proud of your locally produced goods :D :D :D
11:38 AM fragalot: from the nearly illegibile calculation sheet I received it looks like they slapped on a default estimated value
11:39 AM fragalot: and since it's a large shipping company, and the goods have long since been unpacked and partly used, I have no real means to fight this
11:39 AM jesseg: well I guess Belgium government needs money too.
11:39 AM jesseg: yours specifically :P
11:39 AM fragalot: :P
11:40 AM fragalot: I was expecting something like €20 (there's always a 12.50 "administrational fee")
11:40 AM jesseg: yeah
11:40 AM fragalot: >.>
11:40 AM fragalot: second letter I open is the housing tax
11:40 AM fragalot: lol
11:40 AM fragalot: today.. is not a good day for my wallet
11:42 AM Loetmichel: an, as a side note: new accelerator pedal for the BMW 318i was in the mail today... just mounted it... nice to be able to drive again without fear of it getting stuck at full tilt... (bottom hinge was broken)... but WHAT a cheap construction. Simple plastic injection mold with two hinges made of just "a thinner part of plastic" on top and bottom... IMHO a miracle that it lived the 19 years
11:42 AM Loetmichel: it did... -> https://www.ebay.de/itm/382256065889
12:04 PM Tom_L: quality german engineering
12:05 PM Loetmichel: Tom_L: you forgot /s ;)
12:06 PM fragalot_: quality germans engineering?
12:06 PM Loetmichel: fragalot_: the sarcasm delimiter
12:06 PM gloops: yes, a lot of these myths going round
12:07 PM Tom_L: maybe i was serious?
12:07 PM Tom_L: unlikely... but maybe
12:07 PM Loetmichel: on the other hand: try to make a part THAT cheaply and have it survive 19 years in a car...
12:08 PM gregcnc: Live hinge
12:08 PM Tom_L: door hinge on a slab of wood :D
12:09 PM Loetmichel: Tom_L: would be a lot mroe expensive... that part is with a single 2 part injection mold... i doubt it cost BMW more than 20 ct to get one from their suppliers
12:09 PM Tom_L: https://www.amazon.com/Mr-Gasket-9645-Barefoot-Style/dp/B000CMH1WQ
12:09 PM Tom_L: remember those?
12:10 PM gloops: i once got a ticket for a worn accelerator pedal rubber, young and mouthy, cop was determined to find something
12:11 PM Loetmichel: Tom_L: i remember them
12:17 PM IchGucksLive: hi
12:17 PM jesseg: Loetmichel, wow... a bmw uses a thinner plastic hinge on the go pedal?!
12:17 PM Loetmichel: jesseg: 1999 BMW e36 convertible, yes
12:17 PM IchGucksLive: Loetmichel, nuerburgruig clasics ?
12:18 PM Loetmichel: apparently all E36 and E46 use the same pedal
12:18 PM Loetmichel: IchGucksLive: nope. "midlifecrisis car" if you believe my wife ;)
12:18 PM fragalot_: is that not the same thing?
12:19 PM Loetmichel: fragalot: apparently the previous owner thought so
12:19 PM Loetmichel: myself would never go "nordschleife" with a convertible
12:20 PM Loetmichel: thats made to cruise from "eisdiele" to "kneipe", not to race.
12:36 PM IchGucksLive: Loetmichel, argree
12:45 PM fragalot_: aAAAaaaaaaa AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.... we come from the land of the ice and snow with the midnight sun where the hot springs glow...
12:47 PM IchGucksLive: fragalot_, i did a speed ttest today on the sqare liniar set
12:47 PM fragalot_: IchGucksLive: what square linear set?
12:48 PM IchGucksLive: the hgh20 china
12:48 PM fragalot_: any good?
12:48 PM IchGucksLive: 420 eurors
12:48 PM IchGucksLive: the setus is 48V 3.1Nm Nema24
12:49 PM IchGucksLive: Dm556 400Steps at pulley 20/25
12:49 PM IchGucksLive: so 0,01precision as i always use
12:49 PM IchGucksLive: 3.8A at 1meter 4x0,5mm²
12:49 PM fragalot_: quite thin wire for that current
12:50 PM IchGucksLive: only the spindle gets 12mm²
12:50 PM IchGucksLive: 1mm
12:51 PM fragalot_: sure, but at 1 meter with 0,5mm² at 4A you'll lose approximately 4% of the voltage you have available
12:52 PM IchGucksLive: stall gas been at full load MDF 10mm Cutter 2 flutes 5mm depth at 3500mm/min at 200ACC
12:52 PM fragalot_: :-)
12:53 PM IchGucksLive: on 120ACC i managed same value cut up to 65mm/sec 4000mm/min
12:53 PM IchGucksLive: spindle is 1,5Kw at 22000Rpm
12:53 PM fragalot_: not bad for a china setup
12:54 PM IchGucksLive: if i go 80 /80
12:54 PM IchGucksLive: it workes also
12:54 PM IchGucksLive: cut shape is a sqare 100 by 100
12:54 PM IchGucksLive: at G64 P0,1
12:55 PM IchGucksLive: AL cut has been perfect up to 200mm/min 6mm cutter
12:55 PM IchGucksLive: free run 5mm wide 1mm depth
12:55 PM IchGucksLive: it is a Hobby gantry
12:55 PM IchGucksLive: exactly the one in the YT 4Axis
12:56 PM IchGucksLive: THIS one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BzqN-yL2LGs
12:56 PM IchGucksLive: frame is 45x45 Hevy
12:57 PM IchGucksLive: total cost acording to the principal of the School has been 2350Euros including all Stuff ER16
12:58 PM fragalot_: why the weird setup with the profiles? to get more cutting range?
12:58 PM IchGucksLive: The video says 2000.- but there is no ER16 inside
12:59 PM IchGucksLive: it is easy to mount
01:00 PM IchGucksLive: they only can drill
01:01 PM IchGucksLive: the profile come within 0,1mm at 20cents a cut
01:04 PM IchGucksLive: its ok i think at that price students teatchers stuff all impressed at first light
01:04 PM fragalot_: :)
01:08 PM IchGucksLive: hi Motioncontrol
01:09 PM IchGucksLive: im off folks closing doen the garden for night temp drop
01:09 PM Motioncontrol: IchGucksLive, hi
01:09 PM IchGucksLive: and all BBQ are burning around scouts singing night falling and stars shining
01:10 PM IchGucksLive: Motioncontrol, are you in italia
01:10 PM Motioncontrol: IchGucksLive, yes
01:12 PM IchGucksLive: ip 93 can be rome or regione Pugia
01:12 PM Motioncontrol: IchGucksLive, what is your contry ?
01:12 PM IchGucksLive: im in germany
01:12 PM IchGucksLive: in the middle of a big forest
01:12 PM Motioncontrol: IchGucksLive, Puglia
01:12 PM IchGucksLive: Bobione is a nice city there
01:12 PM Motioncontrol: IchGucksLive, you want go in Italy
01:12 PM IchGucksLive: bovione
01:13 PM IchGucksLive: Motioncontrol, here at the campground are so many italiens
01:13 PM IchGucksLive: bovino
01:14 PM IchGucksLive: sometimes wondering why they come here as it better there
01:15 PM IchGucksLive: Motioncontrol, do you need help
01:16 PM IchGucksLive: Motioncontrol, hai bisogno di aiuto
01:16 PM IchGucksLive: mi dispiace
01:16 PM IchGucksLive: sono molto vecchio
01:17 PM IchGucksLive: buona notte
01:19 PM hazzy-lab: Been playing with the BP Romi CNC lathe this morning, I really like the ex-path controller, its half way between writing gcode and that (IMO awful) trak conversational stuff
01:19 PM hazzy-lab: https://i.imgur.com/34kOyDn.jpg
01:19 PM hazzy-lab: It supports full color too :D https://i.imgur.com/b47SB8p.jpg
01:20 PM fragalot_: luxurious
01:21 PM hazzy-lab: IKR
01:53 PM gloops: this is what you want to scrape your ways fragalot https://www.facebook.com/robert.oswalt.7/videos/10216516469492246/
01:57 PM fragalot_: can't view that without an account
01:57 PM fragalot_: describe it to me
01:57 PM gloops: ahh
01:57 PM gloops: its like a steel planer
01:57 PM fragalot_: a planer mill?
01:57 PM gloops: a biut like a shaper tool but the stroke is very long
01:58 PM gloops: maybe yeah, ive never seen one before, that i remember
01:58 PM fragalot_: typically on a planer the pieces moves rather than the cutter
01:59 PM fragalot_: they're not as accurate as grinding or shaping, but really good at hogging off huge chunks of material and still provide a reasonable accuracy
01:59 PM gloops: the cutter is static but i moves along the axis
02:00 PM fragalot_: s/shaping/scraping
02:00 PM gloops: yeah like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4kPDhrhlgk
02:00 PM fragalot_: yup
02:03 PM fragalot_: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HThSfJcrk-g
02:04 PM fragalot_: gotta love some good hobeln
02:05 PM gloops: i was just watching that, the last vid ran on
02:05 PM gloops: lol, mesmerising
02:05 PM fragalot_: yeah the chips look beautiful in b&w
02:06 PM fragalot_: zero chip control compared to modern machining though :P
02:06 PM fragalot_: but since they still used hardened tool steel, i'm not sure if that was even an option back then
02:07 PM gloops: got the angles to play with, that must be a dying art now
02:08 PM fragalot_: for job shops, HSS is still very much in use
02:08 PM fragalot_: but for production there's no place for it anymore
02:08 PM fragalot_: and if there is, it's in pre-ground insert form
02:09 PM gloops: well, then again tool profiles dont need to be remembered or calculated anymore i dont suppose, probably just consult some app
02:10 PM fragalot_: open up catalog, find shape of insert you want, jot down the number for the insert that is recommended for the material and cutting style (interrupted or continuous, roughing or finishing)
02:11 PM fragalot_: job done
02:11 PM gloops: oh yeah for inserts, i was thinking of hss grinding
02:11 PM fragalot_: spend you time doing things that bring in money rather than on what you need to make money
02:12 PM gloops: the old tool room bloke would just look at the tool - what you cutting? hmm, not much rake on this for that - 10 minutes later new tool ready
02:13 PM fragalot_: 10 minutes = €10 for the boss (yay taxes)
02:13 PM fragalot_: that €10 gets him a single cutting edge that's variable so has to be dialled in each time it's put into service
02:13 PM fragalot_: or, he could spend €20, and get up to 8 cutting edges that are all within a few micron of each-other
02:14 PM gloops: yes, times change
02:17 PM fragalot_: NOW we're cooking, 27:20 in that video shows them mounting a milling head on that planer :P
02:18 PM gloops: would have made a good router
02:18 PM fragalot_: with a bulb based motor controller
02:18 PM fragalot_: for analog speed control
02:18 PM gloops: bulb as in valves?
02:19 PM fragalot_: yeah
02:19 PM fragalot_: well, probably. for all I know they were just bulbs as a DC load :P
02:19 PM fragalot_: 29:50 shows them putting on a grinding head
02:20 PM gloops: i threw an ancient speed control out, wish id kept it now, for one thing it was all brass inside, the other thing i saw one on a page somewhere selling for quite a bit of cash
02:20 PM * fragalot_ wants one of these machines now, including the space to put it
02:20 PM gloops: wasnt valves, just dozens of windings - all rotten, i had no idea how to fix it
02:21 PM gloops: but the box itself with nice castings - they buy stuff like that for decor now
02:21 PM fragalot_: i'm waiting for them to mount an EDM to that planer now
02:44 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OG1AiaNTT6s Centrifugal Governor
02:45 PM gloops: pondering modelling a kind of trolls face, a normal face isnt so bad, you just need two photos minimum or drawings to work from - front and side
02:45 PM fragalot: great things to have if the belt snapped & you didn't have one of them newfangled safety valves
02:46 PM gloops: then you realise - there arent any trolls faces on the net with front and side views
02:46 PM gloops: theres always a snag with this, you always have to go one level deeper
02:47 PM fragalot: get a ball of clay & poke it until you have a shape
02:47 PM gloops: spain equalise 2-2
02:47 PM gloops: fragalot yes thats one way, make model, take photos, upload, remodel in mesh lol
02:48 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.turbosquid.com/Search/3D-Models/trollface
02:48 PM fragalot: gloops: or you could get one of them newfangled 3D scanners (or DIY it with lots of pictures)
02:48 PM fragalot: you could look one up on www.dongiverse.com
02:48 PM gloops: havent got 3d scanner
02:48 PM fragalot: have you got a camera?
02:48 PM gloops: Capt thats a bit too trolly heh
02:49 PM gloops: got camera yeah
02:49 PM fragalot: then take tons of pictures from all angles
02:49 PM fragalot: there's software out there to mesh it together into a 3D model
02:49 PM gloops: hmm, would be ok if the model had a low poly mesh that could be manipulated
02:50 PM gloops: im guessing that would go straight to high defintion trimesh
02:50 PM gloops: spain again 3-2
02:51 PM fragalot: you can make it as polyful as you want :P
02:51 PM gloops: i might look into that, would be useful for lots of things
02:52 PM CaptHindsight: there's plenty of free or low cost 3d modeling software out there
02:53 PM gloops: well there is, ive been teaching myself blender, got the hang of it, but lack of troll profiles to go by is a snag, i could just draw some 2d
02:54 PM gloops: but as i say, it turns from - i think ill play for an hour - into - ill be faffing about with this for days
02:54 PM CaptHindsight: define troll
02:55 PM fragalot: icelandic troll
02:55 PM gloops: well, not so much a troll as a green man/wood spirit
02:55 PM CaptHindsight: the kind that lives in trees and steals your lunch money?
02:55 PM gloops: i thought a troll has the same basic features
02:55 PM gloops: something like that yeah
02:56 PM fragalot: CaptHindsight: https://imgur.com/gallery/hEpL2Gd <- this should be a thing
02:57 PM CaptHindsight: great
02:58 PM CaptHindsight: we were talking about self driving rally cars
02:58 PM CaptHindsight: or F1
03:00 PM CaptHindsight: crash bam smash em up derby would be fun
03:01 PM fragalot: self driving rally would be INSANE
03:01 PM fragalot: it's already batshit what they do with human drivers :P
03:03 PM gregcnc: who decided bat shit is the craziest of all shit?
03:03 PM fragalot: think about it gregcnc
03:04 PM fragalot: they spend half the time upside-down
03:04 PM gregcnc: we assume they didn't evolve with a solution for that?
03:04 PM fragalot: never make assumptions
03:05 PM fragalot: CaptHindsight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yr7kSflVkXY <- this, but with zero actual injuries
03:05 PM fragalot: push the limits further! NO FEAR!
03:08 PM fragalot: not only do they start without time intervals, they also start going from both ends of the course
03:08 PM fragalot: :P
03:12 PM gloops: less than 1000 long eared bats left in the UK, scandalous
03:12 PM gloops: bats are intelligent animals
03:20 PM gloops: haha, ronaldo goal
03:20 PM gloops: wow, some free kick
03:23 PM * Tom_L gloops sounds like some radio announcer
03:23 PM CaptHindsight: fragalot: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9F0RvfFJHnM
03:23 PM CaptHindsight: this should be a sport
03:24 PM fragalot: it is
03:24 PM fragalot: curling
03:24 PM CaptHindsight: with semis
03:25 PM gregcnc: happens every year?
03:25 PM gloops: yes ill restrict world cup chat to other places
03:25 PM Tom_L: naw, yer good... just didn't know the sport :D
03:25 PM CaptHindsight: Driving Test Question 13
03:26 PM CaptHindsight: When approaching a large ball of fire that consumes the whole roadway...
03:26 PM fragalot: CaptHindsight: try the other brake pedal?
03:26 PM Tom_L: A: get out the popcorn
03:26 PM Tom_L: B: have a weenie roast
03:26 PM fragalot: C: instagram story
03:27 PM CaptHindsight: D; Press the accelerator and grip the wheel tightly
03:27 PM Tom_L: D: cause another wreck to block the ball of fire whilst txting your buds about the fire
03:27 PM gloops: cheese rolling should be more popular - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fWpkDDDj1QM
03:27 PM fragalot: anyway
03:28 PM fragalot: robots / AI / self-driving demolition derbey
03:28 PM fragalot: i'd watch it
03:28 PM CaptHindsight: me 2
03:29 PM Tom_L: have a whole line of EMT at the bottom
03:29 PM Tom_L: you'd think it was a golden ball
03:30 PM CaptHindsight: self driving version
03:31 PM Tom_L: tell em what a toboggan is
03:32 PM CaptHindsight: the act of bogganing
03:33 PM gloops: robot wars was good, dont know if thats still going
03:33 PM fragalot: went downhill rapidly when they started putting restrictions in
03:34 PM fragalot: I still like razer the best..
03:34 PM CaptHindsight: gloops: the guy that built the set for robot wars used to be in here
03:34 PM fragalot: simple, yet effective.
03:34 PM CaptHindsight: t12 has disappeared
03:34 PM CaptHindsight: was him and his dad
03:35 PM fragalot: cool
03:35 PM gloops: he did? i only watched it for entertainment at the time, didnt know anything about robots
03:35 PM gloops: i remember seeing a few dad/son teams being interviewed, i suppose its that kind of pastime
03:36 PM CaptHindsight: big in Japan
03:36 PM gloops: dad usually more fanatical than son lol
03:36 PM fragalot: CaptHindsight: do you know about japan's complete opposite version of robot wars?
03:36 PM fragalot: where the shittiest robot wins?
03:36 PM CaptHindsight: are electronic hobby stores just a Japan and Germany thing?
03:37 PM CaptHindsight: fragalot: I'll look for it
03:37 PM fragalot: we've got them here too
03:37 PM fragalot: CaptHindsight: HEBOCON.
03:37 PM CaptHindsight: fragalot: we had them until maybe the late 80's
03:37 PM fragalot: you get points deducted if it's too technological
03:38 PM CaptHindsight: now it might just be Fry's in a few locations
03:38 PM fragalot: CaptHindsight: I know of 2 close by here
03:38 PM fragalot: both of which are run by old guys that I hope will be around for a long time still
03:39 PM CaptHindsight: there was one in Chicago last year
03:39 PM CaptHindsight: the sad part is that most maker robots qualify around here
03:40 PM CaptHindsight: the maker scene is so contentious that there are several small ones now vs 1-2 big ones
03:40 PM CaptHindsight: fed up, left, and started their own
03:41 PM fragalot: yea.
03:41 PM fragalot: I don't know of any maker spaces nearby
03:41 PM fragalot: I know of one that tried to start up, but I don't think it went anywhere
03:41 PM fragalot: unless if you count the 2 run by the local uni
03:41 PM fragalot: which are of course exclusive for their students
03:46 PM CaptHindsight: there are some startup/incubators for professionals in the area with lots of tools
03:46 PM CaptHindsight: pricing starts around $400/mo
03:47 PM fragalot: i'm just happily spending that $400 a month on tools for myself, lol
03:48 PM CaptHindsight: https://mhubchicago.com/
03:48 PM CaptHindsight: oh starts at $145/mo
03:48 PM CaptHindsight: https://mhubchicago.com/page/equipment-and-resources
03:49 PM gloops: how do they go on with insurance at these makers places, supposing somebody cuts his hand off or blinds himself
03:49 PM Rab: We had a TechShop here, but it dried up and blew away. The calculus never made sense to me. A year's worth of dues would buy a used Bridgeport.
03:49 PM gloops: or blinds someone else
03:50 PM CaptHindsight: liability waiver plus some shop insurance
03:50 PM fragalot: well, for starters used bridgeports are out as they likely wouldn't meet the safety requirements for others to use it
03:50 PM gloops: dont think id envy the supervisor if people are just walking on off the street jumping on machines
03:50 PM CaptHindsight: some spaces require you to take a safety class before you can operate a piece of equipment
03:51 PM Rab: fragalot, the point is that I'd rather buy myself used equipment for the same money.
03:51 PM CaptHindsight: https://wiki.milwaukeemakerspace.org/equipment
03:51 PM Rab: And use it in my underwear, any time I want.
03:51 PM fragalot: Rab: sure, I think that makerspaces are more geared towards people livingin appartment buildings
03:52 PM fragalot: where it's physically impossible to set up a bridgeport on the 4th floor :P
03:52 PM gloops: angle grinder looks a bit dodgy lol
03:52 PM gloops: https://wiki.milwaukeemakerspace.org/_detail/equipment/grinder01c.jpg?id=equipment
03:53 PM gloops: no guard, no grip on handle
03:53 PM gloops: switch?
03:53 PM fragalot: the switch is fine
03:53 PM fragalot: missing guard is not
03:54 PM fragalot: and the handle is optional for a lot of tasks, imho
03:54 PM Rab: TechShop and the other big outfits do have tools that don't fit into a hobbyist budget, like waterjet. But that equipment is naturally desirable and limited, so you end up waiting to cram your project into any time slot you can schedule.
03:54 PM fragalot: I actually prefer that style of switch VS the rat tail one they seem to have on a lot of grinders these days
03:55 PM fragalot: it's still possible to lock it but the slightest whiff of wind unlatches it & stalls the grinder halfway the cut
03:55 PM fragalot: Rab: if that's the only machine you want you can just send the work out too tbh$
03:55 PM Rab: fragalot, sure.
03:56 PM gloops: half of that lot wouldnt pass any factory inspection
03:56 PM gloops: its a good thing though for learning
03:56 PM gloops: its like childrens playgrounds, they took all the climbing frames and stuff away - no the kids dont learn how not to break their necks
03:57 PM fragalot: I disagree a little there
03:57 PM fragalot: dangerous tools are NOT a good thing for learning
03:57 PM fragalot: it does not have to be dangerously unsafe to teach you respect
03:58 PM MarcelineVQ: "<fragalot> it's still possible to lock it but the slightest whiff of wind unlatches it & stalls the grinder halfway the cut" It's a pretty frustrating style of switch for sure
03:59 PM fragalot: MarcelineVQ: it takes 5 tries for it to actually lock too
03:59 PM MarcelineVQ: and it always seems to unlatch more the more dangerous a cut you're making
03:59 PM fragalot: and those rattail handles are in such a shit position if you're using it to make a cut rather than grinding a horizontal surface
04:00 PM MarcelineVQ: i wonder if we're taking about the same switch type, lemme look for a picture
04:00 PM fragalot: impossible to single handedly deburr a piece or sharpen a drill bit in a pinch too
04:01 PM fragalot: https://proxy.duckduckgo.com/iu/?u=https%3A%2F%2Fmobileimages.lowes.com%2Fproduct%2Fconverted%2F885911%2F885911278317.jpg&f=1
04:01 PM fragalot: that type
04:01 PM fragalot: wait no
04:01 PM fragalot: https://proxy.duckduckgo.com/iu/?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.tradetools.com%2Fimages%2FProductImages%2FGA5021C.jpg&f=1
04:02 PM MarcelineVQ: ah alright, we're not, but I can see your point. the rat tail ones with the side-pin you press in lock just fine
04:02 PM fragalot: more like that, where most of the handle is the trigger & you need to push the whole thing forward to engage, and to a weird jiggy magic move to get it to latch
04:02 PM MarcelineVQ: the kind I had in mind was https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/91Ks1zY6UBL._SX425_.jpg those big slide switches, they unlatch just looking at them
04:03 PM fragalot: I actually prefer those, if they're made right and not worn right out
04:03 PM MarcelineVQ: if you think too hard a thought they'll unlock
04:05 PM fragalot: one of the latest ones i've got is a green bosch (because that's the only one they had in the shop with speed control) has the worst of both sides
04:05 PM fragalot: rat tail ergonomics with the least reliable switch :P
04:05 PM MarcelineVQ: you can tell when a tool is made by commitee
04:05 PM fragalot: hehe
04:05 PM fragalot: have you ever heard of the term "unworking" ?
04:06 PM MarcelineVQ: I'm not sure, what does it mean where you come from?
04:06 PM fragalot: a low profile spy technique that was|is used to subtly sabotage others
04:06 PM fragalot: starts with simple things
04:07 PM fragalot: if you're in a meeting, and the current slide looks very important,.. mention there's a spelling mistake on it
04:07 PM fragalot: even if there isn't
04:07 PM fragalot: that will get everyone distracted & discussing it for a few minutes, taking away valuable time
04:07 PM fragalot: printer jam? leave it for someone else to deal with.
04:08 PM fragalot: if you've worked your way up a bit, insist that all decisions must be made by a comittee of at LEAST 5 people, that only meet twice a year at most
04:08 PM fragalot: need a new tool? not on the approved budget list for this year, submit it for the next.
04:09 PM fragalot: of course meanwhile you're still doing your job
04:19 PM XXCoder: dang. https://interestingengineering.com/video/concrete-bollards-save-lives-outside-donut-shop
04:19 PM XXCoder: apparently owner had several events like that thats why there was very strong protection
04:20 PM hazzy-lab: fragalot: Sounds like something that would only work well in big corps or the gubernment :D
04:20 PM XXCoder: I bet that lady was really scared
04:20 PM fragalot: hazzy-lab: well yeah, that's where you want it to have the most effect as a spy :P
04:23 PM gloops: actor Hugh Laurie got 250 000 pounds for every episode of House
04:24 PM gloops: wow, he must have netted 300 million plus from that
04:25 PM Deejay: gn8
04:27 PM gloops: 30 million sorry, actually there were 177 episodes - 44250000
04:32 PM XXCoder: 44 million nice
04:33 PM gloops: looks easy money
04:34 PM gloops: all these actor end up alcoholic though, must be stressing or something
04:42 PM XXCoder: acting is hard job sometimes
04:42 PM XXCoder: ladies have same, only with extra harassment and 1/3 pay
04:48 PM gloops: yeah must be a lot of pressure on women actors
06:49 PM micges_ is now known as micges
06:59 PM andypugh: This is fascinating. I had hoped that there was a gap for hidden variable theories. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zcqZHYo7ONs
07:14 PM XXCoder: andypugh: watching
07:15 PM XXCoder: ahh yeah. thats basically how lcd screens work :)
07:22 PM andypugh: Indeed. But the interesting thing os what that _means_
07:44 PM andypugh: I like these, but the “shop” seems to lack a rather critical feature. https://www.movaglobes.com/
08:09 PM SpeedEvil: Epoxy-granite too flexy?
08:09 PM SpeedEvil: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/200gr-45-50-yellow-industrial-diamond-powder-synthetic-diamond-powder-abrasive/32799667388.html
08:55 PM XXCoder: how do I know that its really diamonds?
08:57 PM * hazzy-lab thinks it's just yellow grits :D
08:58 PM XXCoder: yummy
09:15 PM CaptHindsight: 45 mesh is too small, might as well just use sand for a polymer composite
09:17 PM CaptHindsight: diamond has poor cleavage compared to granite
09:29 PM CaptHindsight: easily cleaves vs hardly cleaves
09:38 PM Tecan: https://cdn.thingiverse.com/renders/ab/08/e5/d1/d1/47ecd99c71779fe763c04d6b9dd01203_preview_featured.jpg
09:38 PM Tecan: i call it a reprap cubit
09:39 PM XXCoder: ummm
09:39 PM XXCoder: https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/half-life/images/a/a1/Weighted_Storage_Cube_p2.png/revision/latest?cb=20120621220048&path-prefix=en
09:39 PM XXCoder: ;)
09:43 PM Tecan: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2963135 the files for it if you wana look again later when its done
09:44 PM Tecan: it does resemble that hl cube. very elegant looking
09:52 PM XXCoder: just ad couple features and its now printing cube! don't worry, unless you print a knife, it wont stab you!
09:57 PM Tecan: awe crap i printed bottom z with supports
10:11 PM hazzy-lab: Looks interesting Tecan, looking forward to seeing how it prints
10:12 PM hazzy-lab: Do I get an award for being the first to like? :D
10:16 PM Tecan: gratification is good for that
10:53 PM holzjunkie1 is now known as holzjunkie
11:29 PM tjb1: Does anyone have a good understanding of how the Mesa THCAD works?
11:38 PM Tom_L: i bet if you wait and ask in the morning jthornton would
11:48 PM tjb1: Im just trying to measure the frequency coming out of it with an arduino and struggling to get a matching frequency
