12:56 AM fragalot: hey
02:50 AM Deejay: moin
05:02 AM XXCoder: Donald Trump, Roseanne Barr, and Ted Nugent walked into a bar.
05:03 AM XXCoder: Because they'd set it so low.
05:09 AM * syyl leaves the bar.
05:09 AM syyl: oh dang. just got the joke :D
05:12 AM XXCoder: lol
05:14 AM sensille: drop-d
05:41 AM gloops: this country is getting scary https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zgk-UmDft1o
05:44 AM XXCoder: nicely racist comments there
05:46 AM gloops: well, london is getting out of control, another 4 stabbed to death last night, think its higher murder rate than chicago
05:47 AM XXCoder: isnt london have serious problem of people buying flats or whatever and not using em, leaving many empty?
05:51 AM gloops: well there is a housing crisis
05:52 AM XXCoder: same as seattle there and soon tacoma
05:52 AM XXCoder: so lucky we got house right at when its starting to take off
05:53 AM gloops: im not sure why flats are left empty, speculators just making money on the price rise - not bothered about rental income
05:53 AM XXCoder: rich people buying em and using em only as vacation home
05:54 AM gloops: yeah stuff like that
05:54 AM XXCoder: im sure evennually you guys will pass "residency percentage"
05:54 AM XXCoder: laws
05:54 AM XXCoder: less than 50%? you have to sell
05:54 AM XXCoder: or rent out permently till move in for reals
05:56 AM gloops: well, there are a few factors involved, but the immigration policy has caused much of this, you cant just keep inviting people in when there is nowhere to house them
06:00 AM Tom_L: build a wall :)
06:03 AM gloops: theyre not illegal - well not all, probably got more right to be here than me
06:10 AM jthornton: morning
06:10 AM XXCoder: housing issues IS valid reasons
06:16 AM * jthornton is going to attempt to set the shower base again today
06:18 AM gloops: silicone?
06:22 AM jthornton: mortar mix
08:36 AM gloops: good news for jobs in america
08:36 AM gloops: US job growth surged in May, taking jobless rate to 18-year low. 223,000 jobs added in month, up from 159,000 in April; unemployment rate 3.8%, down from April's 3.9%. Average hourly private-sector earnings were up 2.7% over previous year. In April, they were up 2.6%.
08:49 AM cradek: yay, wages might be rising almost as fast as inflation for a brief moment
08:55 AM jdh: why raise wages? raise profits instead.
09:45 AM gloops: hmm, outputting all toolpaths to one file didnt work - first pocket fine, second starts in totally wrong place
09:49 AM gregcnc: from one CAM setup?
09:50 AM gloops: yeah, it does seperate files for every operation, has feature to combine all into one, first time i tried it - not good results
09:54 AM jthornton: ouch
10:18 AM gloops: called in a shop earlier noticed they had some mdf junky decor items, letters, little boxes and stuff, pff the quality is truly shocking, i bet a lot of people are disappointed when they order online because the real thing doesnt look anything like it does in the photos

11:38 AM jesseg: Augmented advertising? :P
11:43 AM fragalot: 'sup
11:53 AM miss0r: yo
11:53 AM miss0r: fragalot: I seem to have hit a wall, with what I consider myself quite good at: This FC51 micro VLT from danfoss
11:55 AM miss0r: I have bought a 1-axis joystick, with a potentiometer inside. (returns to center position). I was under the impression that this would be just fine as controlling it, but I seem to have hit a wall. I'm not sure it has this option. (I want the joystick to run the VLT in either direction, at a speed determined by how hard you pull the lever)
11:55 AM miss0r: ./snag
12:02 PM IchGucksLive: hi all
12:17 PM IchGucksLive: Loetmichel, how has been your igthning night
12:19 PM Loetmichel: what?
12:21 PM Loetmichel: miss0r: can you set a parameter for the analog input of the VFD that makes "half voltage" to zero?
12:21 PM Loetmichel: i.E Shift the zero from gnd to half the analog supply? (usually 10V)
12:22 PM miss0r: Loetmichel: don't seem to have that option in the parameters. Even if I did, I'd run into issues if I could not set a hysteresis
12:22 PM Loetmichel: that would make the VFD behave like you whish if you connect the pot with one end to GND, one end to 10V and the wiper to the analog in
12:22 PM IchGucksLive: the gs2 vfd can do this
12:22 PM miss0r: This is a danfoss FC51
12:22 PM Loetmichel: hmmm... even my stoneage micromaster can do that.
12:23 PM miss0r: I might be getting old and tired at this point, this is the manual if you are willing to glanse at it for 2 secs: http://drives.danfoss.ru/workarea/downloadasset.aspx?id=17179963873
12:23 PM Loetmichel: already at it ;)
12:23 PM miss0r: I would need to make a hysteresis of a certain size in the middle, to avoid the motor shuffeling around
12:24 PM miss0r: This is for moving a workpiece stop forward and backwards on a saw
12:24 PM miss0r: so, I wouldn't want it to move around
12:26 PM miss0r: The only way I can think of making this work, is if I get another joystick(one I have not been able to find) with a single potentiometer that goes from 0-100% in both directions. (0 in the middle) and two switches, that activates at the slightest movement
12:28 PM miss0r: Loetmichel: Tell me i'm not crazy here?
12:29 PM Loetmichel: miss0r: as i read it you are right. the danfoss seems to have no "forward/reverse" option in the analog speed input
12:29 PM Loetmichel: you could hack it
12:29 PM miss0r: I'm relieved i'm not going crazy.. But I am pissed, because I already bought the unit & the joystick, thinking it would be straight forward
12:29 PM miss0r: Listening!
12:30 PM Loetmichel: if you are able to put a switch in that activates on half the movement
12:30 PM miss0r: half the movement? :S
12:31 PM Loetmichel: and then put both ends of the pot at 10V and the wiper on a resistor with the half the resistance of the complete potentiometer...
12:31 PM Loetmichel: and then use the switch to reverse
12:31 PM Loetmichel: and set the min/max limits to whatever that connection between pot and resistor to ground shows you
12:31 PM Loetmichel: on a DMM
12:32 PM Loetmichel: lift the "min voltage" a bit and you got your center hysteresis
12:33 PM miss0r: Sure... I'd have to add a switch...
12:33 PM devlap: im not sure how to configure my spindle. I was looking at the output on my oscilloscope
12:33 PM Loetmichel: a microswitch that activates when the stick is pulled back slightly from neutral and stays on until max pullback
12:33 PM devlap: looks like it never goes above 2b
12:33 PM devlap: 2v
12:33 PM Loetmichel: and isnt active if you push on the stick
12:33 PM miss0r: meh... I'm not following you here. The way I read this manual, i'd need two switches
12:34 PM miss0r: even with the potentiometer hack
12:34 PM miss0r: or am I still in the woods?
12:34 PM Loetmichel: nope, one switch that goes to the "reverse" input
12:34 PM IchGucksLive: devlap, what BOB do you use
12:34 PM IchGucksLive: is there a 0-10V out
12:34 PM devlap: yea
12:34 PM Loetmichel: and the potentiometer "hack" i describes does simply make the center position the lowest voltage
12:35 PM devlap: its this one data:image/jpeg;base64,/9j/4AAQSkZJRgABAQAAAQABAAD/2wCEAAkGBxQTEhUTExIWFhUXFxoZGRgXGBoYGBgdFxoaFhodHxkZHiggGBslHxYdITIhJSkrLi4vGyAzODMtNygtLisBCgoKDg0OGxAQGzAlHyUyKzA1LTAtMjUtLS0vLy0tLTctLS0vLS0tLS0tKy0tLS0tLS0tLTItLS0tLS0tLS0tLf/AABEIALEBHAMBIgACEQEDEQH/xAAcAAABBQEBAQAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAgMEBQYHAQj/xABHEAACAQMCAwUEBwYDBwMFAQABAhEAAyESMQQFQQYTIlFhMnGBkQcUI0JSodFikrHB4fAVM6IkQ1NygrLSY3PCRVVlk/E1/8QAGgEBAQEBAQEBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAEC

12:38 PM devlap: https://i1.wp.com/www.ijohnsen.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/bob-plain.png?w=496 :)
12:38 PM devlap: thata the bob
12:38 PM devlap: google started linking inline images who knew.
12:38 PM devlap: yea it does
12:38 PM devlap: yea thats how I have it wired essentially. The spindle turns just very slow
12:38 PM Loetmichel: a couple of operational amplifiers could make the Pot into "10V-0V-10V" and activate a relay on one "leg"
12:38 PM devlap: I'm not sure if my spindle config is right
12:38 PM IchGucksLive: devlap, THIS one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xpb9JUaWl7M
12:38 PM Loetmichel: that way you wouldnt need to modify the stick itself
12:38 PM devlap: yea I've watched that video IchGucksLive
12:38 PM Loetmichel: its a bit more than soldering two resistors together though
12:39 PM IchGucksLive: SMILE its my channel
12:39 PM IchGucksLive: devlap, there is 12V connected
12:39 PM miss0r: Loetmichel: I will be back in a bit. (I need to put the kid to bed)
12:39 PM devlap: yea the led comes on
12:40 PM IchGucksLive: the led is for 5V
12:40 PM devlap: No the 12v led.
12:40 PM devlap: on the corner of the bob
12:40 PM IchGucksLive: ok
12:40 PM devlap: 12-24V is what the silkscreen says
12:40 PM IchGucksLive: so PWM is directed to pin1
12:41 PM IchGucksLive: dev 12V + and the Ground of the 12V sopurce
12:41 PM IchGucksLive: source
12:41 PM devlap: yea PWM pin 1
12:41 PM devlap: It's set to invert the signal
12:41 PM IchGucksLive: good
12:42 PM IchGucksLive: so then what frequency you put in
12:42 PM IchGucksLive: 400Hz
12:42 PM devlap: yes
12:43 PM IchGucksLive: so unplug the VFD and mesure on 0-10V to 12VGround what it says
12:43 PM IchGucksLive: with a standard V-meter
12:44 PM IchGucksLive: devlap, can you upload the HAL File
12:46 PM IchGucksLive: guten aben Michael_
12:46 PM IchGucksLive: wie siehts aus
12:47 PM IchGucksLive: da isser ja wieder
12:47 PM Michael_: jo, verklickt,
12:47 PM devlap: 13v its a little hot
12:47 PM IchGucksLive: why can there be 13V
12:47 PM Michael_: das Ergebnis: er macht keine Referenzfahrt.
12:47 PM IchGucksLive: it is only 0-10
12:48 PM devlap: I measured the 12v+/-
12:48 PM devlap: the two piddle pins.
12:48 PM IchGucksLive: devlap, there is somthing BAD at your BOB
12:48 PM devlap: The spindle to gnd
12:48 PM IchGucksLive: middle
12:48 PM devlap: let me check
12:48 PM IchGucksLive: the 0-10V got its own GND
12:48 PM devlap: when its on / full spindle speed or just off?
12:49 PM IchGucksLive: devlap, this goes to ACM on the VFD
12:49 PM devlap: my VFD has X1 it goes into.
12:49 PM devlap: Actually AIN1
12:49 PM Michael_: ich bin in Provat!
12:49 PM IchGucksLive: ain is the 0-10
12:49 PM Michael_: Privat!
12:50 PM devlap: Yea AIN1 is 0-10 wire.
12:50 PM devlap: I know because it kind of works.
12:50 PM devlap: Just seems like the level is off.
12:50 PM IchGucksLive: therefor just mesurer without the VFD on it
12:50 PM devlap: so when I measure 0-10 to its gnd, am I doing that when telling the spindle to turn or just idle
12:51 PM gloops: the 12v is the power supply to the bob?
12:51 PM IchGucksLive: 0-10V to Next Gnd on the BOB
12:51 PM devlap: gloops, you put in 12v and usb
12:52 PM devlap: I see 2.4v on the 0-10
12:52 PM IchGucksLive: devlap, can you upload the HAL
12:54 PM devlap: https://pastebin.com/raw/6jcAvjLD
12:56 PM IchGucksLive: devlap, take that out please setp pwmgen.0.dither-pwm true # uncomment
12:57 PM devlap: done
12:59 PM IchGucksLive: devlap, you said somthin about the osziloskope
01:00 PM IchGucksLive: please Check the PIN1 against the PCGnd
01:00 PM IchGucksLive: if there is a Coresponding PWM signal
01:00 PM IchGucksLive: that moves on command S800m3
01:00 PM IchGucksLive: S20000
01:00 PM fragalot: miss0r: you still stuck?
01:00 PM IchGucksLive: S500
01:00 PM IchGucksLive: M5
01:00 PM devlap: uhm which one is pcgnd
01:01 PM devlap: I see it, third in the 5v header
01:02 PM IchGucksLive: yes
01:02 PM IchGucksLive: devlap, you shoudt see somthing like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NR7fEm3sbfE
01:03 PM JT-Shop: Tom_L: http://gnipsel.com/images/bathroom/shower-01.jpg
01:03 PM devlap: Nothing is wired their on the bob to anything currently.
01:03 PM devlap: ill check it one sec
01:07 PM fragalot: miss0r: if still stuck, have you read page 22, table 3-00 option [1] ?
01:08 PM gloops: 25% tariffs on UK steel, hes done it
01:09 PM fragalot: gloops: on raw steel, nothing on processed stuff yet.
01:11 PM gloops: according to the news the local steelworks does 12% of its sales to the usa
01:12 PM devlap: s800 m3 shows a 400hz square
01:13 PM devlap: duty cycle 96%
01:13 PM devlap: S20000 16% duty
01:14 PM IchGucksLive: does it change on S20000
01:15 PM devlap: Yea it changed the duty cycle
01:15 PM IchGucksLive: so this wores
01:15 PM IchGucksLive: workes
01:15 PM devlap: yea p1 and pcgnd next to it shows me what I configured
01:16 PM IchGucksLive: then the meter shoudt show the Voltige 0-10V changing
01:16 PM devlap: what on the bob makes the 0-10V from the PWM source?
01:16 PM IchGucksLive: or you got a FAKE BOB maybe a Blue Board claming V5
01:16 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop you lookin for more plumbing work?
01:17 PM IchGucksLive: devlap, there is a Nandgate used
01:17 PM JT-Shop: plumbing goes on the list of things I don't advertise like concrete, blocks etc. lol
01:20 PM Tom_L: if i don't get interrupted i'm gonna try to do a little milling this afternoon
01:21 PM gloops: just push-fit for plumbing, its a cinch
01:21 PM Tom_L: fat chance of it actually hapening
01:21 PM JT-Shop: gloops: remodel is never a cinch!
01:22 PM * JT-Shop gets back to clean up on aisle 3
01:22 PM Tom_L: borrowed the neighbor's posthole digger for the mailbox the other day to find out the gas tank leaked and wasn't getting any fuel
01:22 PM devlap: I'm not seeing any output change on 0-10V
01:22 PM Tom_L: so i swapped tanks with an old weed eater i had and by the time that was done and i just got ready to do the hole, it started pouring rain
01:23 PM devlap: Which is unusual, I've got the spindle to turn before. but slowly.
01:23 PM gloops: devlap is the relay on/off working?
01:23 PM devlap: When I put in the last job, I had a middle spindle speed, no rotation, I cranked it to 100% and I got like 100rpm.
01:23 PM gloops: like clicking
01:23 PM devlap: I hear clicking from m3 to m5
01:24 PM gloops: what are those references - m3 m5
01:25 PM gregcnc: spindle start and stop
01:25 PM Tom_L: spindle direction
01:25 PM Tom_L: fwd and stop
01:25 PM gloops: so thats working
01:25 PM IchGucksLive: devlap, you mesure the 2 green lines i got here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xpb9JUaWl7M
01:25 PM gloops: spindle scale setting in linuxcnc
01:26 PM devlap: Yea I'm measuring GND and 0-10V
01:26 PM IchGucksLive: gloops, # Set the spin
01:26 PM IchGucksLive: setp pwmgen.0.pwm-freq 400.0
01:26 PM IchGucksLive: setp pwmgen.0.scale 20000.0
01:26 PM IchGucksLive: setp pwmgen.0.offset 0.0
01:26 PM devlap: The Bob is generating those right?
01:26 PM devlap: I have them disconnected while im metering.
01:26 PM IchGucksLive: devlap, yes
01:27 PM devlap: Jut 0-10V and GND for it.
01:27 PM IchGucksLive: the 12V needs to be on
01:27 PM devlap: it is
01:27 PM devlap: the lights on.
01:27 PM devlap: The 4 wires near the two green ones, they are all on the spindle
01:27 PM devlap: 12V led is on
01:27 PM IchGucksLive: Then im out all is clear but no output
01:27 PM devlap: I see 13V on 12-24V in.
01:27 PM IchGucksLive: this is ok
01:27 PM devlap: Yea, so its all good.
01:28 PM IchGucksLive: maybe you got one of this FAMOUS V5
01:28 PM devlap: I've had the bob forever.
01:28 PM IchGucksLive: that do not got the pwm-Analog connected
01:29 PM devlap: well something was connected, it made the spindle move.
01:30 PM gloops: stupid question - you have got the right pin for spindle selected in your config?
01:30 PM devlap: I'm seeing P1/PCGND
01:30 PM JT-Shop: Tom_L: that's how my luck has been going on this bathroom remodel lol
01:30 PM devlap: with PWM on it.
01:31 PM gloops: and is there a jumper on the board to switch to spindle/pwm?
01:31 PM devlap: I don't see any jumper.
01:31 PM devlap: https://warp9td.com/images/BOB_Vendors/StepperOnline/ST-V2.pdf it looks like this
01:32 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, took an hour to fix the thing and about 5 min to dig the hole in the rain
01:33 PM Tom_L: but it's done
01:33 PM gloops: devlap invert pin 1
01:33 PM devlap: it is inverted
01:33 PM devlap: I'd still see reverse voltage swing on 0-10V
01:34 PM Daxxin: biongiono IchGucksLive
01:34 PM gloops: well, to rule out the bob only option is to test the parport
01:35 PM devlap: I'll ship a new bob.
01:35 PM gloops: if the signal is being sent but pwm - bobs shot
01:35 PM gloops: no pwm
01:36 PM JT-Shop: Tom_L: I lent my chainsaw to my neighbor some years ago and handed him a chain to put on it... he came back an hour later and said it won't cut worth a damn
01:37 PM JT-Shop: chain was on backwards
01:37 PM Tom_L: i stopped loaning tools out a long time ago
01:37 PM Tom_L: last one cost me a mower motor
01:37 PM devlap: Thanks IchGucksLive, gloops. New bob comes monday.
01:37 PM Tom_L: hit a pole and said oops sorry
01:38 PM IchGucksLive: hi Daxxin
01:38 PM IchGucksLive: Daxxin, how is the mashine moving
01:38 PM IchGucksLive: Daxxin, we are in the thunder weekend
01:40 PM IchGucksLive: Daxxin, i can give you a running config for your board
01:40 PM IchGucksLive: Daxxin, what system are you on
01:40 PM IchGucksLive: Ubuntu or Debian wheezy
01:42 PM gloops: i thought my cutters were coming today - instead i got a message - sorry this item is out of stock - 5 days later!
01:42 PM gloops: thanks for that!
01:42 PM Daxxin: hi Ich
01:42 PM Daxxin: lets collect the infos
01:43 PM Daxxin: we have thundersstruk?
01:43 PM IchGucksLive: http://heimwerkermarkt-tretter.de/tb6560.zip
01:44 PM IchGucksLive: we got so many water last night
01:44 PM IchGucksLive: not able to move to garden
01:44 PM Daxxin: https://www.futurashop.it/CNC2018
01:45 PM IchGucksLive: nice
01:46 PM Daxxin: https://www.futurashop.it/image/catalog/data/Download/Configurazione_MACH3.zip
01:46 PM Daxxin: nice? lol .minimal
01:46 PM IchGucksLive: you can import that file
01:46 PM Daxxin: made in pvc ..poorman cnc lol
01:46 PM IchGucksLive: i make Hard ALuminium
01:47 PM IchGucksLive: Daxxin, im sorry but i need to close im hear every day at 19:00 Italian time
01:48 PM Daxxin: actually the problem linuxcnc dosen't like my nvidia card
01:48 PM IchGucksLive: Gn8
01:48 PM Daxxin: ''im hear every day at 19:00 Italian time'' :?
01:49 PM Daxxin: lpl what meaning
01:49 PM gloops: hes online at 7 in your time
01:50 PM Daxxin: here alredy 8.14pm
01:50 PM Daxxin: ah ok got
01:56 PM hazzy-dev: just had a very close lightning strike, everything in the shop went crazy(er) (including me) and I could feel the potential in the air
01:56 PM hazzy-dev: Don't think anything was damaged
01:58 PM Daxxin: have a good earth gnd
01:58 PM hazzy-dev: Seems the AC unit was actually struck, but it is running again
01:58 PM hazzy-dev: yes, new 8ft earth stakes all around
01:59 PM Daxxin: maybe if your cellphone was charging now battery full :)
02:00 PM hazzy-dev: Haha, will I was charging a car bat, and the charger stopped charging, needed to restart it
02:04 PM hazzy-dev: shoot, now its hailing
02:20 PM hazzy-dev: and a power failure to top it off
02:22 PM * Tom_L gives hazzy-dev a fariday cage
02:31 PM hazzy-dev: Tom_L: I almost have one with the metal roof. When we get a direct hit it jumps from the roof to my truck, and then to the ground
02:31 PM hazzy-dev: It is really neat to watch, but more than a little frightening
02:41 PM hazzy-dev: Last time we got a direct hit I was working at the top of a 28ft al ladder (i know that's a no no) on the power pole at the street (don't ask why)
02:42 PM hazzy-dev: I had a great view of the corona, it was all around the eves of the roof and strangely enough also around the low branches of a magnolia tree a good ways off
02:42 PM hazzy-dev: It was really strange in that it was sustained for a little while, maybe a second or two
02:46 PM Deejay_ is now known as Deejay
02:46 PM * JT-Shop needs to cobble up a redneck grass catcher for the rider
02:49 PM sync: hazzy-dev: I had that happen when I was *in* the thunderstorm cloud
02:51 PM hazzy-dev: sync: Flying? That would not be fun. I have heard of props being destroyed that way
02:51 PM sync: no, hiking
02:52 PM hazzy-dev: Oh, even worse
02:52 PM sync: yeah, but the times when it was really bad we were in a hut
02:52 PM hazzy-dev: My uncle was struck mountain climbing in Co and killed :(
02:52 PM sync: interesting when all metal railings are glowing
02:55 PM hazzy-dev: I bet!
02:55 PM hazzy-dev: One thing I really want to see at some point is ball lightning
03:40 PM aircooled is now known as hazzy-lab
03:59 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YR0SRjEqFY
04:00 PM Tom_L: :-)
04:05 PM gloops: is ball lightning even real?
04:06 PM gloops: i remember an arthur c clarke documentary about it, seemed inconclusive at the time
04:06 PM JT-Shop: Tom_L: how long is it?
04:07 PM Tom_L: dunno i just watched the first min or so
04:08 PM Tom_L: 1:16
04:09 PM Tom_L: i put a 3" ABS 45 deg elbow on my blower
04:10 PM JT-Shop: that's pretty redneck but looks like it would work
04:11 PM Tom_L: well you wanted redneck :)
04:11 PM XXCoder: gloops: yes.
04:11 PM XXCoder: in fact you could make one in microwave
04:11 PM JT-Shop: I need to watch some during free time... ran out of bandwidth last month
04:11 PM Tom_L: when i bag leaves i put on some hi-vac tips on my blades
04:12 PM Tom_L: keeps the chute from plugging up
04:12 PM XXCoder: get a grape, cut almost all way though, leaving just skin, put it in such way cut surfaces is facing upwards
04:12 PM XXCoder: nuke it
04:12 PM XXCoder: evenually it will make one. note look up for more details
04:12 PM Tom_L: just some bolt on 2" or so wide tips with a slight angle on em
04:13 PM XXCoder: gloops: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ydjgMi21k38
04:14 PM gloops: XXCoder arthur clarke found plenty of old pictures showing what appeared to be ball lightning, plenty of witnesses and so on, but at the time none had ever been recorded in a way that amounted to evidence
04:14 PM XXCoder: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYusDh0Sw3U
04:15 PM XXCoder: much better
04:15 PM XXCoder: yeah scientists doubted it for years
04:15 PM XXCoder: but found more proof so yeah
04:16 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, no need to watch the video, that pretty well sums it up
04:20 PM Tom_L: ok, i widened the slot for my vise so i can mount it more in the middle of the table now
04:20 PM Tom_L: was limited on what i could cut on the left end of it the way it was
04:22 PM Tom_L: seems to handle a full width .250" cutter .250 or so deep without any issues other than the sherline spindle motor gets pretty hot
04:39 PM hazzy-lab: JT-Shop: If your mower does not suck/blow hard enough to get the clippings into the trailer (and many won't), it's easy to make an old push mower into a vacuum
04:40 PM hazzy-lab: block off the bottom of the mower deck with a plate with a hole in the center to make it onto a centrifugal blower housing and run the chute from the tractor to that
04:40 PM rmu: XXCoder: that is not ball lightning
04:40 PM hazzy-lab: Did that for my cousin and it is amazing how much suction it has, picks up all the leaves etc.
04:40 PM hazzy-lab: We did exchange the blade in the push mover with an old material handling impeller, which was overkill, it worked fine with just a high suction blade
04:40 PM rmu: XXCoder: that's just glowing plasma like in an arc or even a neon sign
04:41 PM rmu: XXCoder: for the "ball lightning" you would need some mechanism that contains the plasma for quite a long time
04:41 PM rmu: XXCoder: and an energy source
04:41 PM gloops: yes
04:42 PM gloops: i was just waiting to see if anyone pointed that out
04:42 PM JT-Shop: I actually have a push mower that has a bag somewhere but I can't locate the bag lol
04:43 PM rmu: "contactless" methods to contain plasma would be very interesting to the fusion crowd, until now, plasma containment remains challenging
04:45 PM gloops: i used to love those arthur c clarke mysterious world documentaries
04:45 PM gloops: i think the crystal skulls have been debunked now though, apart from 1 maybe
04:45 PM hazzy-lab: Nah, its not hard to contain plasma, electrostatic confinement works very well, its just very energy intensive!
04:46 PM rmu: hazzy-lab: it's kind-a hard to overcome coulomb potential of atomic core with electrostatic confinement. farnsworth fusor works this way IIRC, and you can really fuse small amounts of material, but no way to extract energy from this process
04:47 PM rmu: yeah, i meant magnetic confinement
04:47 PM rmu: would be much easier with magnetic monopoles ;)
04:48 PM hazzy-lab: rmu: The farnsworth fusor uses electrostatic confinement
04:50 PM hazzy-lab: We have a couple around here that we use for neuron sources
04:52 PM rmu: and i thought you make neutrons out of lithium and neutrons ;)
04:53 PM Deejay: gn8
04:54 PM rmu: what are you using neutrons for? material testing?
04:56 PM hazzy-lab: Yes, material activation and then put the sample in a HPGe detector to determine the composition
04:57 PM hazzy-lab: Just academic, but we give the students unlabeled samples and they have to identify them which is fun
04:58 PM rmu: gamma spectroscopy?
05:00 PM hazzy-lab: Yep! I get to play with some nice toys!
05:01 PM rmu: sounds expensive... perhaps in 20 years we will have something like this combined with xray and terahertz backscatter in our mobile phones
05:02 PM hazzy-lab: I was the lab manager for a few years and got to set it all up. I had a blast!
05:04 PM phipli: hey Tom_L
05:04 PM rmu: hazzy-lab: so you think something like genuine ball lightning exists?
05:05 PM phipli: what did you guys do with your LUFA programmer regarding the bug in the newish (>6) versions of avrdude?
05:05 PM phipli: did you just patch avrdude?
05:06 PM hazzy-lab: rmu: I made a little scintillator gadget that you could place in front of a phone camera and take pictures of "radiation" with, it worked but was not sensitive enough to be practical
05:06 PM stephanisk: hello everyone
05:07 PM DaViruz: hazzy-lab: http://meeep.net/IMG_0280.JPG
05:07 PM DaViruz: my fusor
05:07 PM DaViruz: :)
05:07 PM hazzy-lab: One of the students made a REALLY nice fusor for his thesis project: http://www.rtftechnologies.org/physics/fusor-mark3-index.htm
05:07 PM DaViruz: as of yet uncompleted
05:07 PM stephanisk: what is a fusor? it looks amazing though
05:07 PM hazzy-lab: DaViruz: Very nice!
05:07 PM rmu: beatiful machine
05:07 PM rmu: with a beatiful star
05:08 PM DaViruz: rga / mass spectrometer missing in the pic
05:08 PM DaViruz: yeah the rtftech one is nice, i've been through his site a couple of million times
05:09 PM stephanisk: ok, nuclear fusion, interesting :)
05:09 PM DaViruz: he sells ion injectors on ebay, but i find them kind of expensive
05:09 PM DaViruz: stephanisk: oh, yeah, sorry.
05:09 PM stephanisk: i have a question more linuxcnc related :)) i hope there is someone who can help me out, its been bothering me since a few hours
05:09 PM DaViruz: very simple fusion, not very feasable for power generation
05:10 PM stephanisk: ( on the fusion topic again: it looks awesome and i didn't know this was possible on small scale , i believed all fusion was getting so hot it is impossible )
05:11 PM DaViruz: it is possible and fairly straight forward. the reaction is "inertially confined" in a vacuum, by accelerating ions towards the center of the chamber
05:11 PM andypugh: I have an eBay “400kV” generator. It probably makes nearer 20kV (20mm sparks) would that work?
05:11 PM stephanisk: linuxcnc question: i can't get my stl files to show up in vismach. I can load , no errors, everything seems to be fine, but nothing to see of the stl model
05:11 PM andypugh: Is it off-screen?
05:12 PM andypugh: Or _really_ small?
05:12 PM stephanisk: andy? is that towards me?
05:12 PM andypugh: Yes
05:12 PM hazzy-lab: andypugh: It needs pretty high current, x-ray machine power supplies work well
05:12 PM stephanisk: ok, wanted to make sure
05:12 PM andypugh: I wrote the Vismach tutorial, so feel repsonsible.
05:12 PM stephanisk: i can't see it, whether it is ofscreen or not i cant tell
05:13 PM stephanisk: not very small, i dont think so, cause when i make it the only thing i load, i stillcant see it
05:13 PM DaViruz: 20kV 20mA is probably bare minimum to create detectable neutron emissions
05:13 PM DaViruz: i doubt the ebay thingies put out even 1mA?
05:13 PM stephanisk: than i really needed you yesterday :)))) took me 8 hours to get to understand the vismach basic, meaning just get it loaded without errors
05:13 PM rmu: modified neon sign transformer could work, if those things still exist
05:14 PM stephanisk: but i got there and i can make the shapes like box and cylinder and now i wanted to start by loading my own stl files
05:14 PM andypugh: stephanisk: http://linuxcnc.org/docs/2.7/html/gui/vismach.html
05:14 PM stephanisk: that is proving difficutl
05:14 PM stephanisk: i have that tutorial, read it a 1000 times, which line do you want me to recite :))) helped me out so far, but now i am blocked
05:14 PM andypugh: I don’t suppose they are being created with zero opacity?
05:16 PM stephanisk: Zaxis = AsciiSTL(filename="Zaxisassembly.stl")
05:16 PM andypugh: As a first step, maybe take a working file that imports STL (such as https://github.com/LinuxCNC/linuxcnc/blob/master/configs/sim/axis/vismach/VMC_toolchange/vmcgui ) and change just one part to be your STL
05:16 PM devlap: man im chompin on the bit to start milling
05:17 PM stephanisk: Zaxis = Color(0.5,0.5,0.5,1],[Zaxis])
05:17 PM andypugh: It’s definitely an Ascii STL? You can read it with a text editor and the numbers look like numbers?
05:17 PM stephanisk: mmm good question, generated it out of solidworks
05:17 PM stephanisk: lets open it
05:19 PM stephanisk: notepad gives me this: ä8^% €¿g‰ŒC(>CßyÉCg‰ŒC&>!CßyÉCg‰¦C(>CßyÉC w†ü
05:19 PM stephanisk: i think that is not ascii STL
05:19 PM stephanisk: ?
05:20 PM andypugh: Indeed not
05:20 PM stephanisk: it was saved as binary
05:20 PM stephanisk: saving it as ascii, luckily seem to have that option, lets try
05:20 PM hazzy-dev: stephanisk: SW should let you save it as ascii, I have had that problem before
05:21 PM andypugh: Dinner time. But I am still in the same room, so use my name and the Mac will ping me.
05:22 PM stephanisk: like this andypugh
05:22 PM stephanisk: ?
05:22 PM stephanisk: or how
05:22 PM andypugh: Yes, like that
05:22 PM stephanisk: second day on this chat, its all new,
05:22 PM stephanisk: :)
05:22 PM stephanisk: ok thanks
05:25 PM stephanisk: jihaa, its there, just in the wrong location but lets translate and rotate it a little
05:26 PM stephanisk: i do have a question before i start to do so. How to determine the x=0, y=0 point, like the home position of the machine
05:26 PM stephanisk: how to set this
05:26 PM stephanisk: for now it seems, all i created just gets created in the middle of the screen
05:27 PM stephanisk: this is for andypugh
05:27 PM stephanisk: :)
05:31 PM JT-Shop: machine home is usually set when homing the axis, if no way to home you move to a match mark and set that as home this way your soft limits work
05:31 PM JT-Shop: you never use machine home to machine with...
05:32 PM stephanisk: hi JT, we are talking within vismach
05:32 PM stephanisk: not on the actual machine, i am building machine simulation file of my machine
05:33 PM stephanisk: in purpose of building a postprocessor for it, not on site
05:37 PM andypugh: stephanisk: Yes. You then need to move them in to place.
05:37 PM stephanisk: so in the end i need to move all parts and complete machine around the current spindle in the middle assuming htat is home position
05:38 PM andypugh: (Actually, they are created relative to the STL coordinate system, so if you assemble in SW and then save the assembly as a set of STL files (one per part) then they should end up pre-assembled.
05:38 PM andypugh: Otherwise, create then move.
05:38 PM stephanisk: the problem is the tooltip is not in the same direction or location as the rest and so it seems the tooltip has to be in the exact position
05:39 PM stephanisk: and all has to be moved in relation to the tooltip
05:39 PM andypugh: The tooltip is a mystery to me, but it’s something to do with “Capture”
05:39 PM stephanisk: i just know that when you delete tooltip and capture, the hole thing doesnt work anymore
05:39 PM stephanisk: :))
05:40 PM stephanisk: found that out after 8 hours of trying lines to see what is the minimum requirement for vismach to work
05:40 PM stephanisk: turns out to be tooltip, work, model and main, delete any of these and no boot
05:40 PM andypugh: That tutorial was based on what I worked out over rather longer (and a lot of looking at the Vismach code)
05:42 PM stephanisk: it helps me know a lot, to see how to rotate and such, the wiki is also very good i find as it explains what every argument like r1,x1,r2,x2 so you know what is doint what
05:42 PM stephanisk: but i have yours and the wiki open at all time
05:44 PM stephanisk: just tried something, you cant do anything to tooltip, no translate, rotate or whatever, that is machine 0,0,0 point
05:44 PM stephanisk: the rest has to be placed around it
05:44 PM stephanisk: at least that is my understanding of it
06:09 PM stephanisk: thanks andy by the way, the ascii thing was the problem. hazzy-dev indeed sw has this option, found it and used it. thx aswell
06:09 PM stephanisk: have a great night all of you, i am off to bed
06:12 PM Tom_L: phipli, i wasn't aware of a bug
06:13 PM Tom_L: but i haven't used >6 either
06:13 PM phipli: https://savannah.nongnu.org/bugs/index.php?40831
06:14 PM phipli: not sure if it is with yours (don't have one :) )
06:14 PM phipli: but with the Olimex AVRISP MkII
06:14 PM phipli: which has similar lineage
06:14 PM Tom_L: mine emulated an avrisp MKII
06:14 PM phipli: https://www.olimex.com/Products/AVR/Programmers/AVR-ISP-MK2/open-source-hardware
06:15 PM Tom_L: i know because dean worked for atmel at the time :)
06:15 PM phipli: Dean is the LUFA guy?
06:15 PM Tom_L: yep
06:16 PM Tom_L: he spent some time in Norway then moved back to Australia and got hitched, the poor fool
06:16 PM phipli: yeah, the Olimex version is based on his firmware
06:16 PM phipli: hehe
06:17 PM phipli: I'm lucky, my gf spends too much time playing games to notice how much time I spend playing with microcontrollers and electronics
06:18 PM Tom_L: i know we kept bumping up the signature every time studio came out with a new version up to ver 6 then they changed the way they did it and i'm not sure it works under studio now even
06:18 PM Tom_L: some guys say it should
06:19 PM Tom_L: the big issue is the jungo vs avrusb libs not liking each other much
06:20 PM Tom_L: i probably still have some here if you want one (no guarantees)
06:20 PM Tom_L: i'd have to go diggin to see
06:21 PM phipli: Thank you for the offer :) I'm alright though
06:21 PM phipli: all I need to do is patch avrdude if I really want that programmer working
06:21 PM Tom_L: i'm not sure what olimex did on theirs
06:21 PM phipli: just need it for an xmega, but only playing (not urgent)
06:22 PM Tom_L: pdi
06:23 PM phipli: yup
06:25 PM Tom_L: 3.3v too
06:25 PM Tom_L: i gotta run... ttyl
