12:56 AM IchGucksLive: morning from sunny germany
12:57 AM IchGucksLive: XXCoder, ?
12:57 AM gloops: Ichs that was pretty good use of blender
12:57 AM IchGucksLive: gloops, did it fit your need
12:58 AM gloops: ive looked at it - can do a bit of smoothing and tweaking, its a useable model yes thanks

01:06 AM IchGucksLive: gloops, classic easy milling
01:07 AM gloops: some nice items there
01:09 AM IchGucksLive: take your fave
01:10 AM IchGucksLive: it seams they got 3 shapes and make sizes scale
01:13 AM gloops: https://www.osbornewood.com/8010.aspx
01:14 AM gloops: something like that is easy to machine id say
01:15 AM IchGucksLive: there are 3D files
01:15 AM IchGucksLive: so you are happy
01:16 AM gloops: oh yeah, didnt notice that!
01:16 AM IchGucksLive: yesterday i did see one with a lion on the front
01:17 AM IchGucksLive: but i only got the ISO 30deg view i cand reproduce from that
01:17 AM gloops: how come theyre giving away the 3d files?
01:17 AM gloops: theyre selling the items lol
01:17 AM IchGucksLive: i need a 6 view side
01:17 AM IchGucksLive: look at the prices
01:17 AM IchGucksLive: you can make money out of your cnc
01:18 AM IchGucksLive: OK you need 5Axis servo and Hypermill to get to it
01:19 AM IchGucksLive: no lining
01:19 AM IchGucksLive: full shape cut to make money
01:20 AM IchGucksLive: 5m/min Cut speed at 8mm width with 12mm basscrew on 50mm Depth
01:20 AM IchGucksLive: Ballend
01:20 AM IchGucksLive: 12mm Ballend ,-)
01:20 AM IchGucksLive: im off 2 garden
01:21 AM gloops: thanks Ichs
01:21 AM IchGucksLive: till ....
01:21 AM gloops: meshlab opens the files, blender imports them fine
01:21 AM IchGucksLive: as always its a plecer to deal with you
01:21 AM IchGucksLive: gloops, can meshlap open 3dmax
01:22 AM gloops: not tried but probably can
01:22 AM gloops: meshlab is free
01:22 AM IchGucksLive: im off will try this
01:22 AM IchGucksLive: but max is closed

02:56 AM voxadam is now known as Guest93048
03:35 AM holzjunkie1 is now known as holzjunkie
05:57 AM jthornton: morning
05:57 AM XXCoder: hey
05:57 AM Tom_L: hi
05:57 AM Deejay: yo
06:01 AM fragalot: Hi
06:02 AM XXCoder: coooombobreaker!
06:02 AM Deejay: lol
06:04 AM TurBoss: hallo
06:06 AM miss0r: g'day
06:33 AM miss0r: fragalot: What was that belgium place called that made the industrial adruinos?
07:22 AM fragalot: miss0r: Industruino?
07:22 AM miss0r: possibly. thanks
07:23 AM fragalot: it is, i'm holding one now :-)
07:24 AM miss0r: Indeed. You using them professionally?
07:25 AM fragalot: no, was an R&D purchase
07:25 AM gloops: https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/578127650/large-wedding-sign-styrofoam-large?ref=related-3
07:25 AM fragalot: but they have the right labels, and the board itself lokos very well made
07:27 AM miss0r: Indeed. I will probally get one just to try it with my edm
07:27 AM miss0r: I machining the last parts I need for the linear movement as we speak
07:27 AM fragalot: :-)
07:28 AM miss0r: turns out, that robot was REALY easy to set up. It took me around 3 hours, uncluding lining it up with the wire edm
07:28 AM * fragalot is debugging his debugger >.<
07:29 AM miss0r: hehe... thats like a snake eating its own tail :D
07:29 AM fragalot: realtime applications are fun :-)
07:29 AM XXCoder: what robot?
07:30 AM miss0r: XXCoder: It was an Erowa workpiece changer, with a 80 piece magazine. I just had to program the moment of it, so it could swap out workpieces in a wire EDM
07:31 AM miss0r: fragalot: http://hackles.org/cgi-bin/archives.pl?request=48
07:32 AM miss0r: Old but cute webcomic. you just made me think of it
07:32 AM fragalot: :|
07:32 AM miss0r: brb, resetting the mill
07:32 AM XXCoder: looking
07:33 AM XXCoder: ended in 2004 dang thats old lol
07:33 AM XXCoder: also, whoa you managed to find old comic I have never seen.
07:33 AM fragalot: that was only 2 years ago though
07:34 AM XXCoder: yeah, Rip Van Winkle
07:35 AM miss0r: You should read that one. Quite funny actualy
07:35 AM miss0r: :]
07:36 AM XXCoder: ok
07:36 AM * XXCoder adds to his huge arcive
07:37 AM XXCoder: few doesnt exist now :(
07:37 AM XXCoder: dragon-tails for one, it was pretty long and very funny comic
07:38 AM MarcelineVQ: funny is a stretch but I read it anyway :>
07:39 AM XXCoder: https://i.imgur.com/MwFAFLp.jpg
07:39 AM XXCoder: it was hard finding a example picture. domain doesnt exist now
07:43 AM XXCoder: just found this http://joshuawright.net/slack-wyrm-001.html not bad start lol
08:06 AM miss0r: WTF.. I always seem to be missing a 22mm spacer for the slitting saw holder!
08:06 AM miss0r: no matter how many I make!
09:08 AM holzjunkie1 is now known as holzjunkie
09:34 AM Loetmichel: miss0r: normal. same thing here with xactoknives.
09:35 AM Loetmichel: they simply disappear
09:35 AM miss0r: yeah... I must have made 20+ of those spacers...
09:35 AM miss0r: now 21
09:35 AM miss0r: problem, they are so fast to make, you don't realy bother to look alot for the missing one
09:40 AM miss0r: Loetmichel: I just made this part; It would have been shit without a slitting saw:) https://imgur.com/a/Q8c6bK3
09:49 AM Loetmichel: nah, lay it on its side and use a 2mm by 12mm 2 flute mill bit ;)
09:49 AM Deejay: re
09:51 AM hazzy-dev: wb
09:51 AM hazzy-dev: gloops: I drive by Osborne WP all the time, hehe
09:52 AM gloops: yeah hazzy? big concern is it?
09:54 AM hazzy-dev: It is, they have a couple of pretty good sized metal buildings
09:55 AM hazzy-dev: The owner is on CNCZone quite a bit, they mack almost all their own CNC machines
09:55 AM hazzy-dev: make, even
10:02 AM gloops: i noticed the 3d models they give away have been scanned, not modelled, one even has the price sticker on the back lol
10:07 AM hazzy-dev: That is hilarious! I guess they figure anybody can scan one of their parts, so don't mind giving them away
10:08 AM gloops: yeah maybe thats it
10:22 AM gloops: some of these router people in the usa are charging decent hourly rates - $250 an hour
10:52 AM aircooled is now known as hazzy-lab
11:22 AM aircooled is now known as hazzy-lab
11:30 AM ziper: wtf
11:30 AM ziper: watching this online auction
11:30 AM ziper: a 4 ft lathe with quick change gearbox goes for 200
11:31 AM ziper: a 3/4 hp grinder with stand goes for 225
11:33 AM hazzy-lab: Was the lathe 3ph? That tends to bring the price way down ...
11:34 AM ziper: yeah
11:37 AM hazzy-lab: Its funny it brings the price down, considering how cheap VFDs are these days
11:37 AM ziper: exactly what I was thinking
11:38 AM ziper: or even a spare 3ph motor to make a converter
11:38 AM Rab: Some people need a grinder more than a lathe.
11:39 AM hazzy-lab: Right, now 3ph is an advantage even for shops with only split phase service
11:40 AM ziper: auctions are supposed to reflect market price
11:40 AM hazzy-lab: Rab: You can always put a grinding wheel in a lathe!
11:40 AM ziper: lol
11:41 AM hazzy-lab: I mean, if the lathe is cheaper :D
11:41 AM ziper: i'm curious what these dozen brown and sharpe auto screw machines will go for
11:42 AM Rab: That lathe will never be worth 200-whatevers again.
11:48 AM gloops: an old lathe? most are belt driven anyway, motor not a big issue
11:49 AM ziper: god dammit!! horizontal mill for 100 bucks
11:49 AM ziper: bastards wouldnt let me bid online
11:49 AM gloops: lol
11:50 AM ziper: approve me you assholes! i want to give you money!!
11:51 AM gloops: might have been a favour ziper
11:51 AM gloops: horizontal mill for 100?
11:52 AM ziper: nichols
11:52 AM gloops: you can get cheap single phase motors on old compressors - nobody in their right mind wants an old compressor because its a potential bomb - but the motor is still good
11:53 AM ziper: I'll console myself with the fact that the guy that bought that and the lathe probably know what he had and would have bid me way up anyway
11:53 AM ziper: meanwhile the bridgeports went for 1500
11:55 AM gloops: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ingersoll-Rand-Air-Compressor/263721979666?
11:56 AM gloops: the last 3 item numbers says it all lol
11:58 AM fragalot: Hi
11:58 AM gloops: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vintage-Compressor/113016327518?
11:59 AM gloops: £1 - gets a 3hp motor
11:59 AM fragalot: 1.5hp
11:59 AM hazzy-lab: ziper: Was it small rack and pinion feed nichols? Those are great little machines!
12:00 PM ziper: https://cdn.globalauctionplatform.com/431922e6-64c7-4297-b6a0-a8d9002d6f9c/162b043c-2b22-4ae1-ea9d-99c94582cb9b/540x360.jpg
12:00 PM ziper: i don't know
12:01 PM ziper: gloops, just stick a borescope in the drain, see how rusty the inside is
12:01 PM gloops: fragalot well 1.5 - enough to run a lathe easy
12:02 PM gloops: save the cash and get universal ziper
12:02 PM hazzy-lab: ziper: Yep, those are sweet machines, extremely capable fort their size
12:03 PM ziper: god dammit, well i'll be sure to actually sign up for the next auction
12:03 PM hazzy-lab: Making a BIG bend die on my friends nichols: https://i.imgur.com/ARQ3wiu.png
12:04 PM hazzy-lab: That is chromoly disk 20″ diameter and 4.5″ thick!
12:04 PM gloops: that looks well
12:05 PM hazzy-lab: No, it was more like 24" diameter, it was for 10" CL bend
12:06 PM fragalot: miss0r: is your EDM adventure finished yet?
12:36 PM IchGucksLive: hi
12:37 PM IchGucksLive: Michael__, ?
12:42 PM Michael__: sorry
12:43 PM lcvette: hello all
12:44 PM Michael__: um das zu verstehen um was es uns geht hier ein paar Links, fals du die nicht schon gefunden hast.
12:44 PM Michael__: https://entsalzung.gch.global
12:44 PM lcvette: waiting on UPS to bring my bearing blocks today
12:45 PM Michael__: https://jardin-bajo-el-viento.gch.global/
12:45 PM IchGucksLive: Michael__, kein problem
12:45 PM Michael__: ach! ich dachte wir sind separat!?
12:46 PM IchGucksLive: nein
12:46 PM IchGucksLive: das kann jeder lesen
12:46 PM IchGucksLive: Michael__, doppelt auf meine nick oder mit Rechts und open private chat
12:51 PM miss0r: fragalot: What makes you think it will ever finish? https://imgur.com/a/Q8c6bK3
12:52 PM fragalot_: that looks like a lot of material disappeared :P
12:54 PM miss0r: vanished into thin air...
12:54 PM miss0r: As this is one of many parts that will be hanging on the end of a long arm mounted to a magbase, I want it as light as possible
12:55 PM miss0r: but i got to use my slitting saw... I don't get that used that much around here :]
12:58 PM fragalot_: :D
12:59 PM miss0r: but every time I do, I find that I am missing some spacers.. I have no idea where they go. There must be void somewhere sucking the damn things in
12:59 PM fragalot_: you could use a spring washer instead
01:00 PM miss0r: or maybe not
01:02 PM miss0r: fragalot_: is your CNC adventure finished yet?
01:03 PM fragalot_: it's not even started yet mate
01:03 PM fragalot_: also - deelat hasn't shipped my cutter yet
01:03 PM miss0r: yeah.. you've met a few speed bumps along the way
01:04 PM miss0r: :-/
01:04 PM fragalot_: I'm fairly sure that they might be a dropship front >.>
01:04 PM miss0r: So how are your odds on recieving it by friday then?
01:04 PM fragalot_: at least I paid for Express shipping >.>
01:04 PM fragalot_: dunno, sent them a message asking for delivery date
01:05 PM miss0r: and you had a rcpt return mail on 'no such domain'... go check if the site is still online :P
01:05 PM fragalot_: lol
01:14 PM IchGucksLive: im off Gn8
01:39 PM Tom_L: lcvette, how's the mill coming along?
01:42 PM lcvette: slowly
01:42 PM lcvette: bearing blocks are arriving today finally
01:42 PM lcvette: still working on home and limit switches
01:42 PM Tom_L: pc side working ok?
01:42 PM lcvette: mechanical part
01:43 PM lcvette: pc side so far everything was going good
01:43 PM lcvette: have a few things to go back through
01:43 PM lcvette: had to fix a few things in the files
01:43 PM Tom_L: have you moved the axis etc?
01:43 PM lcvette: for the ATC
01:43 PM Tom_L: other than Y
01:43 PM Tom_L: what was wrong with the ATC?
01:44 PM lcvette: yeah, moved the axis, but found out my screw lead is different then my buddies so will need to change that
01:44 PM Tom_L: that's not too hard
01:44 PM Tom_L: all software
01:44 PM lcvette: the new update had some conflicting syntax
01:44 PM lcvette: just a few changes fixed it
01:44 PM lcvette: current_pocket
01:44 PM lcvette: for the carousel
01:45 PM lcvette: had to change to my_current_pocket
01:45 PM lcvette: i will send you the updated files once they are all sorted out
01:45 PM Tom_L: that would be great
01:45 PM lcvette: but as of now they are working
01:45 PM Tom_L: i know at least one other here that would like to get his carousel working
01:45 PM lcvette: i can move the carousel in and out, home it
01:46 PM lcvette: select a pocket
01:46 PM Tom_L: nice
01:46 PM lcvette: move it a number of pockets via fastest direction
01:46 PM Tom_L: you should comment each subroutine as to what it does exactly
01:46 PM lcvette: to the pocket selected
01:46 PM lcvette: etc
01:47 PM lcvette: once the home and limits are finished and i set the axis scaling properly and setup the atc z axis home and move position heights I should be able to test out a tool change call
01:47 PM Tom_L: i did get gmoccapy to work but i'm not sure what i did
01:48 PM Tom_L: be close to the E-Stop when you do :D
01:48 PM lcvette: i had to go in and fix all those files
01:48 PM lcvette: the ~
01:48 PM lcvette: like you found
01:48 PM Tom_L: yeah i saw that
01:48 PM lcvette: that was my issue all along
01:48 PM lcvette: once i fixed those it loaded right through
01:49 PM lcvette: oh and had to get a few new files that were actually missing as well
01:49 PM lcvette: or empty
01:49 PM Tom_L: did you get a file from somebody to get gmoccapy working?
01:49 PM Tom_L: or did you end up not needing it
01:50 PM lcvette: yeah my buddy witht he same machine sent me 1 or two of the missing ngc files
01:50 PM lcvette: but i got it working before that
01:50 PM lcvette: just by renaming the ~ files
01:50 PM lcvette: and removing the ~
01:50 PM lcvette: just the functionality of the items in questionw ouldn't work until i resolved a few issues
01:51 PM lcvette: once its totally sorted I will send all the files so you have a working copy for all your help
01:51 PM Tom_L: i'll just use it to help others
01:56 PM hazzy-lab: funky weather, blue sky and sun is out, yet it is absolutely pouring down rain
01:56 PM lcvette: no worries
01:56 PM lcvette: use it as you will
01:56 PM lcvette: share it with the world
01:56 PM gloops: must be a rainbow somewhere hazzy
01:57 PM * hazzy-lab gets up to look for one
01:57 PM gloops: think the rainbow is usually the opposite direction to the sun
02:00 PM hazzy-lab: I don't see one, but the sun it almost at the zenith, so it would probably be too close to the horizon to see
02:02 PM hazzy-lab: ah, there go the sirens. A little bit of water on the roads and everybody has a jolly time bumping into each other
02:20 PM Tom_L: good day to own a body shop
02:29 PM Loetmichel: hazzy-lab: same here when it snows 2 or 3 flakes
02:30 PM Loetmichel: i drive a RWD Opel Omega station wagon. front engine rear light as fu** with nearly bald 8 year old tyres... and i STILL have no problems climbing hill in the winter, but see tons of accidens when its a bit snowy and cars with spinning wheels in the ditch or close to it every winter.
02:31 PM gloops: 8 year old tyres lol
02:32 PM gloops: there was a long running govmt ad here 'worn tyres spell danger!'
02:34 PM gloops: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FWjKwzlDHgw
02:38 PM miss0r: fragalot_: Looking at what this linear axis is becomming, I am seriously considering making an X-Y table for it... and run it all with linuxcnc
02:39 PM Loetmichel: gloops: i know... the last few years i really promised myself that i would buy new ones next spring... didnt happen so far...
02:40 PM gloops: Loetmichel re-cut them with soldering iron
02:40 PM Loetmichel: and i didnt have an accident with that car that wasnt someone driving into my stationary car from behind.
02:40 PM Loetmichel: gloops: they still have enough profile.
02:40 PM Loetmichel: they are just hard as fu**
02:40 PM gloops: trouble is rubber degrades with time as well as wear
02:40 PM Loetmichel: they dont even lose that much
02:41 PM Loetmichel: to wear
02:41 PM Loetmichel: because they are hardened from age
02:41 PM gloops: you can have a timing belt with 1000 miles on it - still fail when its 8 year old
02:41 PM Loetmichel: i know. thats why that omega has a BMW engine with timing chain in oil, no belt ;)
02:41 PM gloops: maybe thats it yeah, when they get a shiny casing probably last longer
02:42 PM gloops: you cant beat timing chain, timing belts are only designed to reduce lifespan of a car i think
02:42 PM Loetmichel: the tyres dont have much grip though. (because of hardness) ... but thats something you can get used to ;)
02:44 PM gloops: i had one took off the other day, valve went on motorway, i couldnt stop as was almost at exit, ran on flat tyre for about a mile
02:44 PM gloops: even though it would probably have inflated again - i wouldnt use it again
02:45 PM gloops: could my life - or a bus full of kids, not worth it in my mind
02:46 PM Loetmichel: yeah, before next february i HAVE to get new tyres... the TÜV engieer said last time: "i dont want to see those rubbers again next time or you get no sticker!"
02:46 PM Loetmichel: so i HAVE to buy new ones
02:46 PM Loetmichel: because the summer tyres that are in the garage for 9 years now are slicks, too ;)
02:47 PM fragalot_: miss0r: lol
02:47 PM gloops: stupid design with valves - stuck out further than the wheel rim, low tyres - if you brush a kerb the valve is likely to bend back and crack - which it did, done it before a few times
02:48 PM Loetmichel: thats indeed stupid
02:48 PM Loetmichel: are those original rims for that car?
02:48 PM fragalot_: gloops: quit over-loading it :P
02:49 PM gloops: theres nothing in it, i have to make a conscious effort not to go near kerbs
03:11 PM gloops: pretty old https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1870s-Wood-Metal-Treadle-Lathe-Old-Vintage-Treadle-Flat-Belt/263720316585?
03:13 PM hazzy-lab: Loetmichel: My daily diver is a 92 mazda extended cab truck, is has an extremely light rear and slides all over the place but I know how to keep it under control and its fun!
03:13 PM hazzy-lab: My tires are like yours, 11 yrs old, but still plenty of tread
03:13 PM hazzy-lab: funny thing is I can stop much faster then most modern cars out there. I have been rear ended 4 times after I had to come to a sudden stop in heavy traffic and the guy behind me was too close because he thought he could stop fast enough in his little sports car, but they just skid, lol
03:14 PM Loetmichel: hazzy: sounds familliar ;)
03:14 PM gregcnc: just the other days I noticed my rears are now slicks
03:15 PM * Loetmichel got rearended 2 times at the same place... roundabout, me first in the line to drive in, car behind me thingking that the gap there is big enough and accelerating, $me thinking it isnt big enough ;)
03:15 PM gloops: shocking carelessness
03:15 PM gregcnc: probably should have done control arm bushings a long time ago.
03:15 PM lcvette: hazzy-lab: hows your screen set working?
03:16 PM gregcnc: i knew it was coming, but wear accelerated recently
03:16 PM hazzy-lab: lcvette: I have not done any more work on it. Setting up a new PC now to hopefully make some progress on it soon
03:17 PM lcvette: nice
03:17 PM lcvette: you are using it currently though on your own machine?
03:17 PM Loetmichel: the first time it was a VW Caddy (2 seat "polo" with a box top behind)... my Opel had a few flex breaks in the bumper paint... Caddy was a foot shorter, both headlights shattered, leaking cooling fluid and servo oil, toally shattered bumper ;)
03:17 PM Loetmichel: and the hodd was rooled in like a tuna can ;)
03:17 PM Loetmichel: rolled
03:24 PM gloops: well, its ok when it falls in your favour Loetmichel, but there are bigger things out there than a VW Caddy
03:25 PM gregcnc: you might get rear ended by a 777
03:25 PM Loetmichel: gloops: there are. but not that many in germany. the Omega with its 2 tons of steel is alreay one of the bigger cars here
03:26 PM Loetmichel: unless i get rear ended by a lorry my chances are pretty good that the one behind me has more damage than my car i would guess ;)
03:26 PM fragalot_: it's not about the damage to the car, it's about the damage to both drivers
03:27 PM fragalot_: (and passengers, obviously)
03:27 PM Loetmichel: i just thought it funny to see that completely destroyed caddy front and my rear bumper with a few paint cracks in contrast to that
03:27 PM Loetmichel: and as i was standing on the brakes i didnt even feel much of it
03:27 PM Loetmichel: just a "THUD" when he impacted...
03:28 PM Loetmichel: the omega didnt even shook
03:28 PM gregcnc: is the bumper high on that car?
03:29 PM Loetmichel: gregcnc: not THAT high: http://www.cyrom.org/palbum/main.php?g2_itemId=12135&g2_imageViewsIndex=1
03:29 PM gloops: thing is modern cars are designed to crumple
03:29 PM Loetmichel: gloops: on the front
03:29 PM Loetmichel: not on the back
03:30 PM Loetmichel: the back of that Omega is pretty rigid.
03:30 PM gloops: a woman hit me on roundabout, her car was demolished - or so it appeared, when you looked it was just outer shell that crumpled really, looked far worse than it was - only a tap really
03:30 PM Loetmichel: the steel rail inside the plastic bumper is made of 3mm steel
03:31 PM gloops: controlled impact
03:31 PM Loetmichel: gloops: leaking coolant and servo fluid indicates that the Caddy fared a lot worse though
03:31 PM gloops: you look at the stock car drivers with heavy girders and box section frame - when they collide they get bad injuries, because nothing gives
03:31 PM Loetmichel: it basically pressed the radiator into the engine
03:32 PM Loetmichel: gregcnc: got the picture? its pretty much normal "car bumper height"
03:33 PM gloops: there was a case at local stock car track, car ran into steel post - driver died instantly, even though the car hardly even bent, apparently the arteries tore off his heart because of the sudden violent stop
03:33 PM gregcnc: yeah looks normal
03:34 PM gregcnc: vw caddy is the strangest looking thing i've seen in a while
03:35 PM Loetmichel: gloops: as a prominent fellow countryman of yours said: "speed doesent kill you. Suddenly becoming stationary is what gets you"
03:35 PM Loetmichel: gregcnc: its very popular with the pizza delivery guys and the postal service here
03:37 PM gregcnc: similar to the small ford transit?
03:39 PM gloops: cant get a ladder on the roof
03:46 PM miss0r: fragalot_: It ended up being a somewhat complicated part... but it is done now, except for the MF14x1 thread. I will get the tap tomorrow: https://imgur.com/a/SSRuH6N
03:46 PM miss0r: that part is roughly 60mm from wingtip to wingtip
03:47 PM gloops: brave effort https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/used-metal-working-lathe/263722960740?
03:47 PM fragalot_: miss0r: why didn't you thread-mill it? :D
03:48 PM miss0r: I don't own a threadmill :]
03:48 PM miss0r: I have considered buying one though
03:48 PM miss0r: I have needed it before ;)
03:48 PM fragalot_: :P
03:48 PM Rab: gloops, wow
03:49 PM gregcnc: single point thread mills are worth having
03:49 PM miss0r: those four holes in the middle are 4mm clearance holes for the heads of the M2 bolts
03:49 PM Rab: Gotta love the water valve handle on the tailstock.
03:49 PM fragalot_: is that.. flat bar for the bed?
03:49 PM gloops: Rab i spotted that lol
03:49 PM gregcnc: i'm more impressed someone put a bid in
03:50 PM gloops: £80..wonder what the bid has in mind for that
03:50 PM gloops: bidder
03:50 PM fragalot_: gregcnc: well it's got a motor & chuck :P
03:50 PM Rab: "Nothing atall comes with the lathe"
03:50 PM fragalot_: british ingenuity at it's best
03:51 PM gloops: i dunno 'grandad made' has a certain charm for collectors
03:53 PM SpeedEvil: The key is to pick the right grandad
03:53 PM miss0r: I'll call it a night. see you around
03:56 PM gloops: there were some picture sold here, the old man had painted just what he could see out of his bedroom window, no art training or knowledge at all, the horse was bigger than the tree etc, total garbage really..and yet
03:56 PM gloops: sold for a fortune 'primitive art'
03:57 PM gloops: who wouldnt want to try that lathe
04:04 PM hazzy-lab: Loetmichel: Yep, having strong rear bumpers really helps out, mine is only a little bent up after four cars ramming it and being badly damaged: https://i.imgur.com/CM8N4ga.jpg
04:05 PM Loetmichel: hazzy-lab: those steel ramming bars are no longer allowed in germany
04:05 PM Loetmichel: not even for SUVs
04:06 PM hazzy-lab: Really? You don't find them on cars here anymore, but SUVs and trucks still have them
04:07 PM hazzy-lab: They are good in small accidents because they don't get too messed up, but I guess they are more dangerous in a bad accident
04:07 PM fragalot_: trucks have them at the rear & sidezs, but they nee to be at a specific height (to keep a car from beheading the passengers when they hit)
04:08 PM Rab: This was my last car, notice the bumper was in great shape: http://reboots.g-cipher.net/cueball.jpg
04:08 PM hazzy-lab: Ouch Rab, the bumper of the other car must have gone just over yours
04:08 PM gloops: volvos had a reputation for being solid
04:08 PM phipli: that'll buff out
04:09 PM Rab: hazzy-lab, yeah, the aggressor was a Mustang...bounced off the curb and over the bumper.
04:10 PM Rab: The unibody frame was fine, the trunk absorbed all the impact. Maybe a different story if it had hit the bumper. I improvised some taillights and drove it for years after that.
04:12 PM gloops: could have found one with a front end smash
04:12 PM hazzy-lab: Those older Volvo's were good vehicles, my sister had one in Canada and put 350k on it before it rusted away completely
04:13 PM Rab: Now I have the wagon version, much more versatile: http://reboots.g-cipher.net/container/plywood.jpg
04:13 PM gloops: cut & shut
04:14 PM hazzy-lab: Nice! Thats what my sister had, if your not up north it will last a lifetime!
04:15 PM Rab: I'm in Texas, no salt here. ;)
04:19 PM Loetmichel: hazzy-lab: i helped friends build and drive these to africa for holidays...
04:20 PM Loetmichel: http://www.cyrom.org/palbum/main.php?g2_itemId=16326
04:20 PM Loetmichel: http://www.cyrom.org/palbum/main.php?g2_itemId=16324
04:20 PM Loetmichel: http://www.cyrom.org/palbum/main.php?g2_itemId=16316
04:21 PM Loetmichel: and yes, those 60mm steel tube ramming bars had a pourpose ;)
04:21 PM Loetmichel: they were NOT decoration ;)
04:22 PM gloops: well, when i used to go to the stock car racing, the makes that fared best in the unmodified classes, racing and demolition derby were a) jaguar b) Austin/Morris (Leyland) c) Ford Cortina
04:23 PM gloops: volvos usually did ok though
04:24 PM phipli: not great on my laylands, but the other two have lots of room around the engine
04:24 PM phipli: heh
04:24 PM phipli: *Leylands
04:24 PM phipli: I'd imagine Toyotas would do quite well.
04:25 PM gloops: for some reason the front wheel drives did well - austin 1800 as it was known as, similar to maxi and allegro, the princess, they always ran for ages
04:26 PM gloops: i am going back 20 years and more though
04:28 PM gloops: dont remember toyotas standing out phipli
04:29 PM phipli: On the roads they seem to just keep on going
04:29 PM gloops: oh yeah, good engines, honda as well
04:33 PM Deejay: gn8
04:39 PM phipli: sigh. graduates
04:40 PM phipli: 10pm and I'm still checking their work because they've left it until the last minute and need to submit it for Friday
04:42 PM hazzy-lab: phipli: :(
04:43 PM phipli: I'd forgive them if they'd made all the corrections I pointed out last time
04:43 PM hazzy-lab: One thing I don't miss at all is grading, especially when it is clear the students have no interest in the subject.
04:44 PM hazzy-lab: Right
04:47 PM hazzy-lab: I guess some of the upper level courses like Nuclear power gen were fun to grade, but the 1000 level programing classes I normally got stuck with were a pain in the #@$
04:48 PM hazzy-lab: My kinda of trucks Loetmichel! those look great!
04:48 PM phipli: these are first year on the graduate scheme in a company
04:48 PM phipli: entering a competition - final submission of paperwork is this Friday
04:49 PM JT-Shop: hey phipli
04:50 PM phipli: All I can do is write "are you sure" and, "this isn't the number you are looking for"
04:50 PM phipli: hey JT-Shop
05:03 PM Tom_L: hey JT-Shop, how goes the remodel?
05:06 PM JT-Shop: got the shower pan fitted to the spot so nice and level, now need some blocking then set the pan
05:24 PM hazzy-lab: LOL, somebody just told me that my car has a quick shift kit in it, but even so the shift pattern is like 14" square! Time for some new bushings ...
05:31 PM phipli: Drove my girlfriends car for the first time the other day
05:32 PM phipli: turns out people complain when I go around roundabouts in third gear in it
05:32 PM phipli: it works just fine in my car (when it is on the road)
05:42 PM Rab: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5U63IGmy6Q
05:44 PM andypugh: I need to cure myself of my fondness for Lemo 00 connectors.
05:44 PM andypugh: https://goo.gl/images/wMh5Dw
05:45 PM andypugh: Especially second-hand ones with solder already in the bucket.
05:45 PM andypugh: That thread is M7. The insulator is 3.5mm dia. They are jolly fiddly
05:48 PM phipli: Is there a cheap chinese alternative?
05:48 PM phipli: (also, night - I should sleep)
05:49 PM andypugh: i fpund loads in a skip. Van’t get cheaper than that.
05:50 PM Rab: But what about the mating connector?
06:23 PM DaViruz: andypugh: use some of our vibration measurement instrument that uses them in an industrial environment
06:23 PM DaViruz: that cures lemo fondness in a hurry
06:24 PM andypugh: Rab: The mating onnector is even more fiddly.
06:25 PM DaViruz: at least partly, i'm still pretty fond of them, but my collegues hates them to the core
06:25 PM andypugh: Rab: https://goo.gl/images/21kJYw
06:26 PM andypugh: That’s the 2 pin version. Getting the buckets and solder blobs to not touch the 2-part spacer shell is a game.
06:27 PM andypugh: DaViruz: The big ones, if you have a pin crimper, are perfectly OK to assemble.
06:27 PM andypugh: But it seems a shame to use those for only 4 cores.
06:27 PM andypugh: (also, I had an existing hole for a 3.5mm jack)
06:28 PM DaViruz: it's not so much the assembly part as in the mating part when things are full of grease and metal dust
06:28 PM DaViruz: 3.5mm phono should be the standard connector for everything.
06:28 PM andypugh: Ah, I would suggest not filling them with grease and metal dust ;-)
06:28 PM DaViruz: it's simply perfection
06:29 PM sync: well, that is why you have a dummy plug to plug them when they are not in use
06:30 PM DaViruz: installing a 3mm dummy plug with gloves covered in grease and metal dust will most likely add to the problem :P
07:18 PM Tom_L: what's a recomended lubricant for electrical connectors?
07:18 PM CaptHindsight: hazzy-lab: time for some big solenoids and push buttons for shifting
07:19 PM Tom_L: i've got a large outlet that binds every time i plug something into it
07:20 PM Tom_L: like 50-60A outlet
07:20 PM CaptHindsight: Tom_L: the auto parts store will answer "dielectric grease" for $5 a 5ml tube
07:21 PM CaptHindsight: Tom_L: any lube that does not contain water and is non-conductive is what is used
07:24 PM andypugh_ is now known as andypugh
07:25 PM CaptHindsight: http://www.machinedesign.com/archive/lubricating-electrical-switches
07:26 PM Tom_L: that's about what i figured but thought i'd ask anyway
07:27 PM CaptHindsight: unless you enjoy the smell of bacon
07:31 PM CaptHindsight: looking for a cnc mill within 500 miles of here
07:32 PM Tom_L: to buy, rent, borrow, or steal?
07:32 PM hazzy-lab: To looks at.
07:32 PM hazzy-lab: CaptHindsight: It would be pretty easy to rig up a few solenoids to shift this thing
07:33 PM CaptHindsight: Tom_L: purchase
07:33 PM Tom_L: should be plenty of em up there ehh?
07:34 PM CaptHindsight: going to keep the Matsuura for odd jobs like granite and wood
07:36 PM andypugh: I think I would use silicone grease

07:44 PM Tom_L: hah that looks about like the one my bud has
07:44 PM Tom_L: except his control is far more worn
07:45 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Used-Bridgeport-VMC-1000-22-CNC/152979764185

07:47 PM Tom_L: would you rather see it running?
07:48 PM CaptHindsight: a few Matsuura MC500V's around for <$3k
07:48 PM CaptHindsight: yeah, running tends to have less surprises
07:48 PM CaptHindsight: skunkworks converted one a couple years ago
07:49 PM Tom_L: do you want a project?
07:49 PM CaptHindsight: not too much of one
07:49 PM CaptHindsight: have enough already
07:49 PM CaptHindsight: I'll convert a machine but i really don't want to have to rework spindles and spindle motor
07:50 PM Tom_L: that first mazak looks too clean
07:50 PM Tom_L: especially for 2k
07:51 PM CaptHindsight: scammy type listing
07:51 PM CaptHindsight: only 1 previous sale or buy
07:52 PM Tom_L: my bud kept one tree and still uses it after probably 25 yrs
07:52 PM Tom_L: he's had to replace the vfd and some axis bearings
07:52 PM Tom_L: and a servo or two
07:52 PM Lcvette: Hey all, happy to report I got my bearing blocks finally and got them installed so have my y axis back running again, now to finish my home and limit switches
07:52 PM Tom_L: but has a source for parts
07:52 PM Tom_L: still not cheap
07:53 PM Lcvette: Those little tree machines are awesome
07:53 PM Lcvette: I have a friend with a 30x16
07:54 PM CaptHindsight: most of what I cut is aluminum, so higher speed spindle is a big plus
07:54 PM Tom_L: i liked them alot better than the Fadal's he had but not as good as the Okumas
07:54 PM Lcvette: Linear machine, had similar repairs, axis end bearings and servo upgrade
07:54 PM Lcvette: Thing rocks
07:55 PM Tom_L: he had a spindle fault once and changed the vfd a while back
07:55 PM Lcvette: Oh he also had the single rebuilt not to long ago as preventative
07:55 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Okuma-Howa-CNC-Vertical-Machining-Center-Model-AC-3VA-18543C/332337397382

07:57 PM CaptHindsight: Tom_L: says Late 1980's
08:00 PM Lcvette: You cut mainly aluminum? No would stay with linear rail machines
08:00 PM Lcvette: Way cheaper to rebuild
08:01 PM CaptHindsight: just seeing whats out there
08:01 PM Lcvette: What envelope?
08:01 PM CaptHindsight: it's never big enough
08:02 PM Lcvette: What space?
08:02 PM CaptHindsight: replacing a Matsuura 710
08:03 PM CaptHindsight: for specs https://www.ebay.com/itm/MATSUURA-MC-710V-Ram-Master-1-Yasnac-Control-Under-Power-and-Running-/122966332131
08:03 PM CaptHindsight: is only a 3K RPM spindle
08:04 PM Lcvette: You want an open or enclosed machine
08:04 PM CaptHindsight: will probably swap the spindle for something 10K-20K range later this year
08:04 PM Vitran: I got a question. Is anyone online actually buying Fanuc controllers or old DC motors? I ripped them out of my Hardinge and tried posting them, but nobody wants to bite. I assume Fanuc6 controllers are too old to buy
08:04 PM CaptHindsight: either
08:04 PM CaptHindsight: Vitran: you never know
08:05 PM Lcvette: Why not go with a fadal then
08:05 PM CaptHindsight: Vitran: as soon as you toss em out, 2 weeks later somebody or you will want them
08:05 PM Lcvette: Ajay most come with a 10k Spindle
08:06 PM CaptHindsight: Lcvette: it comes down to whats for sale now and <500 miles from Chicago
08:06 PM Lcvette: Ah
08:06 PM CaptHindsight: then as soon as I buy something, something else better will become available for less
08:07 PM CaptHindsight: spring is usually the best time around here for VMC's and CNC lathes
08:09 PM CaptHindsight: https://milwaukee.craigslist.org/tls/d/cnc-milling-machine-vertical/6565484748.html $5k
08:09 PM CaptHindsight: wow with video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJ_ikohusbU&feature=youtu.be
08:10 PM Vitran: CaptHindsighte: my buddy has been in that factory
08:10 PM CaptHindsight: Vitran: ^^ St Francis, Wi?
08:10 PM Vitran: CaptHindsight: they make medical equipment
08:10 PM CaptHindsight: just south of Bay View
08:11 PM CaptHindsight: worth a look and make beer stops :)
08:11 PM Vitran: he worked at a company that networked cnc machines
08:11 PM Vitran: and now they have all haas machines and apparently the haas works for them
08:11 PM CaptHindsight: Vitran: know anything about the machines?
08:12 PM Vitran: that one? no. I am talking to a friend in chat
08:12 PM Vitran: I am up in Toronto region
08:12 PM Vitran: Stoney Creek
08:13 PM Vitran: I just run a Deckel Dialog 11 and am working on a hardinge retrofit
08:13 PM CaptHindsight: Vitran: were you referring to the Bridgeport 1000?
08:13 PM CaptHindsight: that factory?
08:13 PM Vitran: The one in Milwaukee
08:14 PM CaptHindsight: OK
08:14 PM CaptHindsight: I'll probably look at them since beer is nearby anyway
08:15 PM Vitran: Want to talk to my friend who was in there?
08:15 PM Vitran: I can get him in the chat
08:15 PM CaptHindsight: Vitran: if he knows anything about them machines, otherwise tell him I say Howdy and thanks
08:15 PM CaptHindsight: them/the
08:16 PM CaptHindsight: I must have been watching too many westerns :)
08:16 PM Vitran: He said they took good care of their machines
08:16 PM Vitran: compared to many of the shops he visited
08:16 PM CaptHindsight: good to know
08:16 PM Vitran: Proper warm up procedures
08:16 PM CaptHindsight: my Matsuura came from up in that area as well
08:19 PM CaptHindsight: it just needs a spindle
08:20 PM CaptHindsight: there was a fresh rebuilt on ebay for a year and as soon as I was going to buy it it disappeared
08:22 PM CaptHindsight: https://chicago.craigslist.org/chc/bfs/d/cnc-milling-machine/6601893363.html
08:23 PM CaptHindsight: only 4500 RPM
08:24 PM CaptHindsight: https://milwaukee.craigslist.org/tls/d/cnc-mill-machining-center/6551896641.html
08:24 PM Tom_L: you're lookin for a high speed spindle then..
08:24 PM CaptHindsight: yes, either way
08:25 PM CaptHindsight: I can retrofit the Matsuura with something much higher speed
08:25 PM Tom_L: one you already have?
08:25 PM CaptHindsight: yeah
08:25 PM Tom_L: why not go that route then?
08:26 PM Tom_L: same tool changer?
08:26 PM CaptHindsight: don't use the changer
08:26 PM CaptHindsight: looking for a bigger machine
08:28 PM CaptHindsight: https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/UIIAAOSwXkJatSyb/s-l1600.jpg easy enough to rework the head for a higher speed spindle
08:29 PM Tom_L: is that one yours?
08:29 PM CaptHindsight: no, but similar
08:30 PM CaptHindsight: 710 vs 760
08:30 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rvd_0Hmt3fM&feature=youtu.be
08:31 PM CaptHindsight: ^^ how mine started
08:34 PM CaptHindsight: he still has the video up
08:34 PM CaptHindsight: what a combo of odd controls
08:36 PM Tom_L: makin me dizzy watching it
08:36 PM CaptHindsight: heh
08:36 PM CaptHindsight: Mr Steadycam
08:36 PM Tom_L: mine are no better
08:37 PM CaptHindsight: he was desperate to sell it
08:37 PM Tom_L: is that 40 or 50 taper?
08:37 PM CaptHindsight: was <$2500 and he delivered it to the door for $200
08:37 PM CaptHindsight: bt40
08:38 PM CaptHindsight: bad wiring job
08:39 PM Tom_L: i was kinda surprised with my new mill after dealing with the sherline for so long to actually get a round circle from it :)
08:39 PM Tom_L: in tolerance...
08:39 PM CaptHindsight: nice
08:40 PM CaptHindsight: I have to make a bunch of parts from SS this summer
08:40 PM Tom_L: the spindle is still the weak spot but i'm ok with it for now
08:40 PM CaptHindsight: will waterjet all the SS sheet and channel
08:40 PM CaptHindsight: have a bunch of odd SS parts to mill though
08:41 PM CaptHindsight: and of course either time for work or to retrofit, not both
08:42 PM CaptHindsight: have to rebuild the Bridgeport and still finish the air bearing lathe with linear motors
08:43 PM Tom_L: move closer and i'll come by and help :)
08:43 PM CaptHindsight: are you free?
08:43 PM Tom_L: no
08:43 PM Tom_L: puttin 2 thru college right now
08:43 PM CaptHindsight: I'd really like to avoid machining
08:44 PM CaptHindsight: wish Greg had bigger machines
08:44 PM Tom_L: my little machine won't do ss, i did some steel strap clamps but it was slow goin
08:49 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6WkgtSbrxE building a little smaller version similar
08:50 PM Tom_L: fun
08:51 PM CaptHindsight: with conveyors at each end
08:51 PM Tom_L: trade show?
08:52 PM Tom_L: looks like it was
08:52 PM CaptHindsight: no, but show quality
08:52 PM CaptHindsight: has to be polished and painted for maximum pretty
08:52 PM Tom_L: just figured with all the suits walking around..
08:52 PM CaptHindsight: robot meets car show
08:52 PM CaptHindsight: oh, that was
08:53 PM Tom_L: McCormick place/
08:53 PM Tom_L: ?
08:53 PM Tom_L: i had a friend that showed up there every year
08:54 PM CaptHindsight: it's making a comeback after the past 10 years of slowdown
08:55 PM CaptHindsight: people starting using the convention center closer to the airport and away from the unions
08:55 PM CaptHindsight: or other cities
08:57 PM CaptHindsight: http://www.rosemont.com/desconvention/ started getting all the shows in Chicago besides Fabtech, manufacturing WeeK and the restaurant/housewares shows
09:13 PM CaptHindsight: "Forum downtime for upgrade starting at 1500UTC" was this earlier today?
09:13 PM CaptHindsight: or old channel message?
09:14 PM Tom_L: hard to say, he's done it a few times with no real impact
09:14 PM Tom_L: i haven't noticed anything too recent
09:15 PM Tom_L: may have been today from the looks of it
09:21 PM CaptHindsight: is anyone out there in the Chicago area with bigger machines I don't know about?
09:22 PM CaptHindsight: TomP moved/retired to Thailand
09:22 PM CaptHindsight: skunkworks has some but it's his hobby
09:25 PM Tom_L: mighty fine hobby i might add
09:26 PM CaptHindsight: JT's 8+ hours away
09:27 PM Tom_L: oh, lookin for somebody to make parts?
09:28 PM CaptHindsight: sure
