12:44 AM IchGucksLive: morning from "Summer" germany
12:48 AM pink_vampire: morning!
12:48 AM IchGucksLive: pink_vampire, you never sleep ;-)
12:48 AM pink_vampire: i'm using the cosmic rays as my energy source
12:48 AM IchGucksLive: pink_vampire, 2am at your place
12:48 AM pink_vampire: corrwec
12:48 AM pink_vampire: correct
12:48 AM IchGucksLive: 5hr to lunch in CA
12:48 AM IchGucksLive: for the MARS University mission
12:48 AM pink_vampire: link!!!!!!!!
12:48 AM IchGucksLive: This tells me im a Dinosour
12:49 AM fragalot: morning :)
12:56 AM pink_vampire: hi fragalot
12:56 AM pink_vampire: i just removed the old spindle controller
01:06 AM fragalot: was there something wrong with it?
01:07 AM pink_vampire: i'm replacing the original motor with belt and servo
01:10 AM gloops: things that are not worth making https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00AI3ZS4W/ref=psdc_2850819031_t1_B007K82BUC
01:12 AM gloops: £5 materials, 30 minutes on the table, assembly - pfff
01:12 AM pink_vampire: make me some
01:13 AM fragalot: gloops: it'd take more than 30 minutes if you're making just one set
01:13 AM fragalot: setting up to cut those box joints already takes 30 minutes before you've made the first cut
01:14 AM gloops: yes it would - you need the entire thing laid out for one operation
01:14 AM gloops: one cut from 1 sheet
01:15 AM fragalot: not sure what you're going to use to cut it to get sharp edges on those box joints
01:15 AM fragalot: assuming a single setup
01:15 AM gloops: the box joints arent filleted on that though, not been made on a horizontal router, probably more traditional joinery workshop, far quicker for repetition
01:19 AM fragalot: yeah
01:19 AM gloops: a couple of chinese boys and a highly dangerous dado cutting head
01:19 AM fragalot: probably a stack of them to do it in one pass
01:19 AM fragalot: anyway i'm off to go scoop rotten leaves & dead spiders out of a hole in the ground
01:19 AM fragalot: (rain water tank, been 5 years since the last clean-out :P)
01:19 AM fragalot: ttyl
01:19 AM gloops: yeah, maybe a clamped block or some fixed jig to ram them through like lightning
01:19 AM gloops: have a nice day
01:27 AM Deejay: moin
01:56 AM gloops: first cup of coffee for 3 days
01:58 AM gloops: so, back to designs, ive made a general rule of thumb for cnc router - if its square, it isnt worth making
01:59 AM MarcelineVQ: the product?
02:00 AM gloops: yeah
02:01 AM gloops: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00AI3ZS4W/ref=psdc_2850819031_t1_B007K82BUC
02:02 AM gloops: router cant make that as fast as circ saws
02:07 AM gloops: however, only 3 machines can make that https://i.pinimg.com/564x/b0/4b/e2/b04be2b255f5b151e57b74f8c76aa035.jpg
02:07 AM gloops: cnc laser or router and fretsaw
02:07 AM gloops: and you arent going to be making many of those with a fretsaw
02:07 AM MarcelineVQ: plasma too but I get what you're sayin
02:08 AM gloops: or plasma if metal yeah, but still like horizontal cnc format
02:14 AM gloops: im way behind with a design portfolio, ive saved hundreds of photos, intending to narrow it down to a few and get the models ready to cut - didnt happen cos i was bogged down getting the machine working
02:14 AM MarcelineVQ: a design portfolio of?
02:15 AM MarcelineVQ: I mean, designs obviously :> but what do you gravitate towards
02:18 AM gloops: well, to sell, it needs to be easy, labour exclusive, in demand, and profitable
02:18 AM gloops: the mistake here is to err towards stuff you like personally, or find challenging
02:18 AM gloops: i dont want likes on facebook, i want a few £s haha
02:19 AM gloops: decorative junk from mdf seems a good place to start
02:21 AM gloops: https://www.razortoothdesign.com/projects/severna.html
02:21 AM pink_vampire: https://www.youtube.com/NASAJPL/live
02:22 AM MarcelineVQ: Normally you'd want to find customers first and then make products hehe
02:22 AM gloops: nah, i dont want that route, im not making anything to order
02:22 AM MarcelineVQ: but there's no lack of poeple who want odd things on their walls taking up space, so there's a market at least
02:23 AM gloops: 'aluminium composite'
02:23 AM MarcelineVQ: I tell you I regret making the lathe before a mill, nearly every part could have been done up on the mill
02:23 AM MarcelineVQ: That's a bit of a non-sequitur, but I'll forget to say it later
02:24 AM gloops: i thought you had a cnc router? have you got plans for a metal mill as well?
02:27 AM MarcelineVQ: I've neither currently and regretting it :> The steel I'm using is thin enough for a router to have cut, and the rest is wood
02:28 AM gloops: well, working with steel by hand can take ages
02:29 AM gloops: i was lucky to have at least a lathe, bench drill etc, think ive been stuffed without those
02:31 AM MarcelineVQ: I cheated a bit and got a tailstock chuck for the wood drill hereh, used that to do some of the trickier bits
02:31 AM MarcelineVQ: *wood lathe here
02:31 AM MarcelineVQ: Whatever works until you can build the tools that build the tools
02:32 AM gloops: totally
02:35 AM gloops: i did some slotting on the lathe using it like a mill, now i could have cut open end slots with the angle grinder i suppose, an welded a piece back to close the end, but its stuff like that that takes ages, it gets depressing, days and days pass and nothing seems to progress
02:38 AM MarcelineVQ: the main advantage I could see for me is layout, even if I had a router that didn't cut anything, the fact that it could layout drill spots and holes and such would be a crazy timesave. especially because it can do it clean, I'm awful about getting nice material dirty just doing layout :(
02:39 AM MarcelineVQ: by which I mean things like discoloring nice wood, hard to clean things
02:43 AM MarcelineVQ: started using metric a lot more, when the hole is at 0.467 inches it's a lot easier to see 12mm on a scale than 61/128th's
02:44 AM MarcelineVQ: those numbers aren't actually accurate, just close examples
02:45 AM MarcelineVQ: actually it's not far off is it heh
02:46 AM MarcelineVQ: ah mixed the digits, 0.476 inches
02:47 AM gloops: yeah, well i grew up in the Uk when it was changing from imperial to metric, so i learned both and still mix them lol
02:47 AM MarcelineVQ: it's a pretty muddy mix here still
02:47 AM gloops: i tend to use inch for approx measurements and bigger measurements
02:47 AM MarcelineVQ: I think in inches but am coming around to measuring in mm
02:47 AM gloops: its seems natural to me to say - thats 4ft long
02:48 AM MarcelineVQ: 25.4 isn't so hard to remember
02:48 AM gloops: but i wouldnt measure 7.5mm in imperial
02:49 AM gloops: metric comes into its own when you have to start dividing stuff as well
02:49 AM gloops: or multiplying
02:50 AM MarcelineVQ: if you have the tools to work in thousanths everywhere it's not much different than metric math-wise, but most things are fractional :X
02:52 AM gloops: i have the tools but dont always use them lol, for my own stuff its often trial fitting when it gets close
02:54 AM gloops: now back to watching videos i saved 6 months ago..voronoi patterns, did all this and completely forgot how to
04:07 AM XXCoder: hey pink_vampire ya in?
04:07 AM pink_vampire: hi
04:08 AM XXCoder: curious if you was playing around with octive? heh
04:08 AM XXCoder: exporting some math surfaces into 3d model
04:08 AM pink_vampire: XXCoder: no pure solidworks
04:09 AM XXCoder: cool :) I planned to buy that 3d model but I keep ehh not get it lol
04:09 AM pink_vampire: https://i.imgur.com/wthoAgT.png
04:09 AM XXCoder: it doesnt help that I dont have room for working cnc router and no wotking 3d printer
04:09 AM XXCoder: wow thats pretty good
04:09 AM pink_vampire: what format you need?
04:09 AM XXCoder: stl is fine
04:09 AM pink_vampire: ok. one sec
04:09 AM XXCoder: thanks :) though im curious how yoy formed such 3d shape
04:12 AM miss0r: Just bought a 1ton chain wench at a flee market, plus some nylon rollers. Now I will make the shop hoist :D
04:12 AM pink_vampire: XXCoder: i want $10 for it
04:12 AM XXCoder: aww
04:12 AM miss0r: I've had a 120x100x8 I beam in the yard for hardening for the past two years for this project :D
04:13 AM miss0r: hardening=rusting :D
04:13 AM XXCoder: hardening and also destressing by weather changes?
04:13 AM miss0r: Indeed
04:13 AM miss0r: :]
04:13 AM XXCoder: not too sure it'd be called
04:14 AM XXCoder: forgot
04:15 AM miss0r: I think I'll be doing a bolted design
04:21 AM XXCoder: pink_vampire: dunno if youre serious
04:21 AM XXCoder: too tired to tell lol
04:50 AM gloops: ideally beam should be built in, can knock out for it though
05:02 AM miss0r: The beam will be inserted into the wall on both ends, and given a few support rods along the way to the roof beams
05:07 AM gloops: is it double skin walls?
05:08 AM miss0r: no, its build with aerated concrete blocks
05:08 AM miss0r: It has a pretty high column strength
05:09 AM gloops: ahh, so its just tap a couple of holes in then
05:09 AM miss0r: So, I will have to open the wall to the outside in one end, where I will be inserting the I beam from the outside. and then i will do a blind hole in the other end, and concrete it into place
05:10 AM miss0r: Plus adding a few threaded rods along the way to the roof beams
05:11 AM miss0r: Keep in mind, I'm only going to lift up to 1000kg with it. Well.. Probally only 200kgs, as this is for loading stock onto the mill & lathe
05:11 AM gloops: yeah not saying the block wont hold the weight, can be problematic to fit with cavity walls without knocking holes through everything
05:12 AM miss0r: Indeed. But these walls are massive
05:15 AM gloops: well, got some extractor bagging arrived, and a fan, just need to make the other parts heh
05:15 AM gloops: suppose i better have a look at it
05:18 AM jthornton: morning
05:18 AM XXCoder: hey
05:25 AM Aztec03 is now known as Panoptes
05:57 AM miss0r: damnit! I want a bandsaw I can fit in my shop!
06:02 AM XXCoder: doctor who ;)
06:04 AM pink_vampire: https://www.nasa.gov/nasalive
06:04 AM pink_vampire: in 2 min...
06:05 AM SpeedEvil: ULA launch to Mars on russian engines.
06:14 AM phipli: morning
06:14 AM jthornton: morning
06:15 AM phipli: lots of bins : https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00KMQUDM2/
06:15 AM gloops: first flange welded on, not sure how 1 step reduction from 100mm to 30mm will work
06:16 AM phipli: gloops, what is the reduction in? air?
06:16 AM gloops: air - dust extractor yeah
06:16 AM phipli: there are standard methods - how interested are you?
06:16 AM phipli: I can probably drag out the calc on Tuesday when I'm back in work
06:17 AM gloops: well, im just going for the easiest way really, but general theory would be of interest - i take it it should be a more gradual reduction?
06:17 AM phipli: a taper would help a lot though
06:17 AM phipli: yeah
06:18 AM gloops: probably make one another time, if this works well enough it will do for now, if it doesnt i guess im making a cone from sheet metal
06:19 AM gloops: https://tse3.mm.bing.net/th?id=OIP.AdvJOhol8hPPl_zmpqnNNwHaHa&pid=15.1&P=0&w=300&h=300
06:19 AM gloops: ive got something like that, for blowing bouncy castles up, a bit more industrial
06:19 AM gloops: noticed it also sucks pretty hard
06:21 AM gloops: actually i might stop now and make a cone lol
06:21 AM jthornton: I need something like that for my dust collection
06:22 AM gloops: well it was only 5 quid on the car boot sale, about a 1/3rd horse motor on it, i reckon it will extract well, but if not i got a motor for £5
06:22 AM XXCoder: jt simple enough to make cyclone and add bag
06:22 AM XXCoder: woodgears guy made one out of couple materials, wood and plastic
06:22 AM gloops: theyre exactly the same thing you see on dust extractors, just used in reverse
06:22 AM XXCoder: *each of
06:23 AM phipli: check the duct section in this book : http://www.venttech.co.nz/wp-content/uploads/2012/WPG_FE(s).pdf
06:23 AM jthornton: http://billpentz.com/woodworking/cyclone/cyclone_plan.cfm#cyclone_design
06:23 AM phipli: chapter 6 I think
06:23 AM gloops: the exhaust im not bothered about being too sturdy, i dont want to be messing about with glue and stuff for the extract side though
06:24 AM phipli: Page 90 talks about sudden section change
06:25 AM gloops: ill make a cone, its not saving any time doing it wrong
06:26 AM jthornton: http://billpentz.com/woodworking/cyclone/build_cyclone.cfm
06:28 AM gloops: The velocity of the air towards a suction point falls rapidly with the distance
06:28 AM gloops: away-in fact with the square of the distance when this is more than about
06:28 AM gloops: twice the diameter of the suction opening.
06:30 AM phipli: hum?
06:30 AM gloops: hmm, thought i was getting to the bit about stepping
06:31 AM gloops: its got to be done anyway, ill make a cone about 8 inch long that should do it
06:33 AM phipli: anything is better than nothing, it will be quieter as well
06:34 AM phipli: you could always test if it works well enough first though
06:34 AM XXCoder: yeah nuclear waste is better than nothing
06:34 AM phipli: that is an... unusual comparison with a duct
06:35 AM gloops: cant think of anything to utilise
06:35 AM gloops: no threaded plastic fittings or anything like that come to mind
06:35 AM XXCoder: phipli: active peltier cooling system
06:36 AM phipli: for?
06:36 AM phipli: gloops is talking about dust extraction I think?
06:36 AM XXCoder: lol im so tired I was thinking cold end cooling
06:36 AM phipli: :)
06:36 AM XXCoder: then made a joke
06:37 AM phipli: long day?
06:37 AM XXCoder: yeah though also bit of insomia
06:37 AM phipli: these are cool : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_cycle_machine
06:37 AM jthornton: http://billpentz.com/woodworking/cyclone/cyclonespreadsheetac160629.xls
06:37 AM phipli: (literally)
06:38 AM phipli: https://www.liebherr.com/shared/media/aerospace-and-transportation/transportation/images/products-and-solutions/air-conditioning-systems/liebherr-air-cycle-air-conditioning-system-architecture-zoom.jpg
06:38 AM phipli: train version
06:39 AM phipli: the train version uses a high speed fan to suck air through a turbine (fan and turbine connected by a pipe)
06:40 AM phipli: means the air in the pipe is cooled because if you expand a gas, it cools down
06:40 AM phipli: they run the cooled air through a heat exchanger which cools a second (clean, non-oily) supply of air which goes into the passenger area
06:41 AM phipli: the fan and turbine are mechanically linked to scavenge some of the energy back into the system and improve efficiency
06:42 AM phipli: Aero versions just pinch some air from after the initial compression in the engine, because there is lots going spare
06:42 AM XXCoder: cool, going off to bed though later
06:42 AM phipli: night
06:42 AM phipli: hope you catch up with your sleep
06:43 AM XXCoder: thanks
06:43 AM XXCoder: im now mostly recovered from crushing 2 weeks flu
06:43 AM XXCoder: it was nasty
06:44 AM phipli: :(
06:46 AM XXCoder: ok off for reals now heh night
07:00 AM jthornton: off to the shop now
07:22 AM gloops: taper made
07:25 AM gloops: so confident in this ill weld it straight to the inlet
07:33 AM russ56: morning
07:33 AM gloops: afternoon
07:39 AM russ56: I am confused about grounding my spindle power supply it only has a live and neutral for ac power and + and - for dc side
07:41 AM russ56: ground the neutral i guess
07:43 AM gloops: the spindle or vfd?
07:47 AM russ56: the power supply a 500w chinese from ac neutral
07:49 AM russ56: lots of emi when spindle is turning if i unhook spindle wire at spindle eveything is good
07:49 AM gregcnc_: no chassis ground?
07:51 AM russ56: maybe the power supply case is to be grounded
07:55 AM russ56: that was maybe my first mistake i am using a large plastic and use common gound for every thing
07:55 AM russ56: plastic tub for enclosure
07:57 AM russ56: except the power supply for the spindle it hasn't got an ground terminal
08:12 AM gloops: hmm, castle blower was a bit of a fail, it does work with taper but much reduced suction, borderline if any good
08:14 AM phipli: less than without?
08:16 AM gloops: i didnt try it without a taper
08:16 AM gloops: with 100mm opening it sucks your hand to the inlet
08:16 AM gloops: with reducer it doesnt lol
08:17 AM gloops: its not a total loss but not as strong as i wanted, ill look for something else
08:18 AM gloops: it would make a good general extractor for changing the air, i want something with a strong pull for the cutter with a small pipe
08:20 AM gloops: what i perhaps should have done was put a big pipe from it to the cyclone, then reduced from there
08:21 AM phipli: hum. Aliexpress has decided I'm in the Netherlands
08:21 AM * jthornton caught a terrapin in the live trap, lucky for it I don't like turtle soup
08:22 AM phipli: get any pictures?
08:22 AM phipli: what were you trying to trap? Fresh water shrimp or fish?
08:25 AM jthornton: I trap for opossum and raccoon mostly but sometimes I get a terrapin or a cat lol
08:26 AM jthornton: I even caught a chicken once
08:26 AM jthornton: she didn't like that at all
08:26 AM phipli: ah right - I thought it was in water
08:26 AM phipli: one of your birds, or the neighbours?
08:26 AM jthornton: no, a terrapin is a land turtle
08:27 AM jthornton: neighbors, mine are in chicken fort knox
08:27 AM phipli: I thought they were small aquatic ones
08:27 AM phipli: I guess "terra" is the clue
08:27 AM jthornton: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terrapin
08:27 AM jthornton: breakfast time here
08:28 AM phipli: that seems to say aquatic?
08:36 AM lcvette: morning
08:37 AM lcvette: trying to resolve a wifi issue on debian stretch install
08:37 AM lcvette: using this solution: http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=131621&p=672566#p672566
08:37 AM lcvette: but when i try, it says /etc/networkmanager/networkmanager.conf not found
08:38 AM lcvette: anythoughts?
08:38 AM lcvette: im brand new to linuxcnc, and this is stumping me
08:55 AM jthornton: phipli: this explains why people in Missouri call a box turtle a terrapin https://mdc.mo.gov/conmag/2006/07/box-turtles-and-people
08:58 AM jthornton: lcvette: probably been renamed in stretch... a lot of stuff has new names when it comes to networking
08:59 AM jthornton: lcvette: use your file manager to browse to /etc and see what it is named... in Linux Mint for example its /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf
09:01 AM lcvette: i never copnsidered it but is it case sensitive?
09:01 AM lcvette: considered
09:01 AM jthornton: yes, file names are case sensitive
09:02 AM lcvette: ahhhhhhhh
09:02 AM lcvette: pounds head on wall
09:02 AM lcvette: that may be it
09:02 AM lcvette: lesson learned the hard way
09:03 AM Spida: https://www.banggood.com/2pcs-Vee-Blocks-Clamp-Set-40x32x32mm-Precision-Engineers-Vee-Blocks-Kit-p-1217050.html <- love these pictures
09:03 AM pcw_home: you should have an icon for the network manager on the stretch screen
09:04 AM lcvette: what?%#$% ICON???
09:04 AM lcvette: i can do things with icons too?
09:05 AM lcvette: and windows without words in them?
09:05 AM lcvette: spida... yes thats how i feel myself... round peg square hole
09:08 AM lcvette: when instruction have a brackets like this [device]
09:08 AM lcvette: does this mean i put my device name in?
09:11 AM pcw_home: yes
09:12 AM pcw_home: I forget what the net mangler icon looks like in Debian, maybe a ice cream bar
09:12 AM JT-Shop: lol
09:13 AM pcw_home: why I dont know, the icon in ubuntu is the common signal strength icon
09:14 AM lcvette: lol.. icecream bar.. that is pretty good.. im about to head out into the shop in a few minutes to have a look, im doing a bit more research on a few other items and finishing some other videos on linux for beginners
09:20 AM JT-Shop: make sure you mention the exact version of the OS your giving instruction for... they all seem to vary with names etc
09:24 AM IchGucksLive: hi all from a summer day in germany
09:25 AM IchGucksLive: lotsa of people here around the Bathlake
09:25 AM IchGucksLive: im in the Finishline to the next 12 CNC
09:25 AM IchGucksLive: fingers are Alu dark
09:26 AM IchGucksLive: heading up the solder iron for the first switch
09:27 AM IchGucksLive: WHAT a perfect srtart of the V5 this morninfg
09:32 AM IchGucksLive: hi Brigi
09:32 AM Brigi: Mornin' IchGucksLive!
09:32 AM Brigi: Though I guess using relative times doesn't work in international chat...
09:33 AM IchGucksLive: how is it high up in the Rocky mountains
09:33 AM IchGucksLive: Brigi, im in germany
09:33 AM IchGucksLive: itsa late afternoon
09:34 AM IchGucksLive: Beer getting colder and the BBQ hoter
09:34 AM Brigi: IchGucksLive, Allergy inducing! I think you've told me that before.
09:35 AM IchGucksLive: YES im a okd ODD man but the Solder workes and the Z is Homing so X next
09:36 AM Brigi: I just finished up a mod for my computer (I'm working on many), care to see it?
09:36 AM IchGucksLive: i do 12 cnc now at once
09:40 AM Brigi: https://imgur.com/a/NoZNs5R
09:43 AM IchGucksLive: how many amps can thex take
09:43 AM IchGucksLive: im off till later
09:45 AM Brigi: Was ich talking to himself...?
09:54 AM gloops: well, hes german you know
09:58 AM Lcvette_: Join
09:59 AM Lcvette_: Ok, so I tried the case sensitive and it opened a gedit window for the NetworkManager.conf
10:00 AM skunkworks: https://www.cnczone.com/forums/mach-software-artsoft-software-/360232-mach3-longer-works-windows-10-version-1803-a.html
10:00 AM Lcvette_: But I can't seem to find my device name anywhere... I found the ice cream bar but it doesn't list my wireless adapter name
10:02 AM Lcvette_: Ah skunkworks!!! I'm following your fix for wireless lan!! Or attempting too
10:03 AM skunkworks: oh - how does it act? My fix was for wireless that shows up and see's wireless networks - just never connects.
10:03 AM Lcvette_: Uh oh.. gonna be more linuxcnc converts
10:03 AM Lcvette_: Correct, I can see lots of networks, just not connect to them
10:04 AM Brigi: gloops, ^_^
10:04 AM Lcvette_: Yup noobs like me...
10:05 AM skunkworks: Lcvette_: tap complete is your friend
10:05 AM Lcvette_: I'm not sure where to find my device name though
10:05 AM skunkworks: nano /et[tab]/Net[tab] and so on/
10:06 AM skunkworks: do you have the link for my fix?
10:06 AM Lcvette_: Yes
10:06 AM skunkworks: 'ip address' should give you the name for the wirless
10:06 AM Lcvette_: I even spent hours last night trying it
10:07 AM skunkworks: Lcvette_: can I have the link? (I don't have it at my fingertips)

10:15 AM lcvette__: ah, i had to plug it back in to copy and paste
10:15 AM skunkworks: ah!
10:15 AM skunkworks: why do you need the name?
10:16 AM lcvette__: because you put [device]
10:16 AM lcvette__: i was told to put my device there in brackets
10:16 AM lcvette__: im very new to allof this

10:25 AM dioz: i actually don't know hah
10:25 AM dioz: that was just a guess

10:29 AM lcvette__: https://www.cnczone.com/forums/uncategorised-metalworking-machines/309614-cnc-tormach-posts.html
10:30 AM Lcvette_: That's the whole story, needs an update soon but was wanting to make a little headway with the software
10:33 AM lcvette: join
10:34 AM lcvette: lcvette coing to you live via wireless lan thanks to skunkworks awesomeness!!!
10:35 AM skunkworks: Yay!
10:35 AM skunkworks: Don't give up - linuxcnc/linux is well worth the learing
10:35 AM lcvette: dude.. you rock!!!
10:35 AM skunkworks: learning
10:35 AM lcvette: indeed
10:35 AM lcvette: slowly
10:36 AM lcvette: i am root
10:36 AM lcvette: lol
10:36 AM skunkworks: heh
10:37 AM lcvette: you arent using an ethernet mesa card by chance on a static 10.10.10.10 address are you?
10:37 AM skunkworks: lcvette: this was my linuxcnc learning project..
10:37 AM skunkworks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=39q6kvrSBSk
10:38 AM skunkworks: lcvette: yes.
10:38 AM skunkworks: nano /etc/network/interfaces
10:38 AM skunkworks: add
10:39 AM lcvette: oh snap
10:39 AM lcvette: k
10:40 AM lcvette: sudo nano or justnano?
10:40 AM skunkworks: auto enp3s0
10:40 AM skunkworks: iface enp3s0 inet static
10:40 AM skunkworks: address 10.10.10.12
10:40 AM skunkworks: hardware-irq-coalesce-rx-usecs 0
10:40 AM skunkworks: sudo - sorry
10:41 AM skunkworks: now you should be able to setup a linuxcnc config with the mesa card set to 10.10.10.10 (jumpers)
10:41 AM skunkworks: or you could try to ping the card atleast. ping 10.10.10.10
10:41 AM skunkworks: (I have had to reboot to get the changes to take effect - I havn't found the right services to restart)
10:42 AM skunkworks: That is using your interface name - you might want to make sure i spelled it right
10:43 AM lcvette: the last digits above you have 12
10:43 AM lcvette: is that a typo?
10:43 AM lcvette: guessing supposed to be 10
10:44 AM skunkworks: no
10:44 AM skunkworks: that is the ip of your network interface
10:44 AM skunkworks: that needs to be different but in the same subnet.
10:44 AM lcvette: ok
10:44 AM skunkworks: so 10.10.10.7
10:44 AM skunkworks: or whatever - just not 10.10.10.10
10:44 AM skunkworks: that is the ip of your mesa card
10:48 AM lcvette: ok, entered and saved
10:48 AM lcvette: now?
10:48 AM lcvette: i set the jumpers on the 7i92 as instructed
10:50 AM lcvette: w5 down, w6 up to set ip to 10.10.10.10
10:51 AM skunkworks: you might have to reboot - but you could try powering up the 7i92 and pinging it. ping 10.10.10.10
10:51 AM skunkworks: like I say - it might be easier to reboot
10:51 AM lcvette: ok, rebooting
10:52 AM lcvette: brb
10:52 AM skunkworks: you could try the networking restart from above
10:55 AM Lcvette_: Holy crap skunkworks that machine is insane!!!
10:55 AM Lcvette_: I'm on my tablet watching it on YouTube now while I shutdown and restart
10:56 AM skunkworks: best hardware from the 60's
10:56 AM skunkworks: ;)
10:58 AM BeachBumPete: beast mode mill
10:59 AM lcvette: yeah that thing is a monster!
11:00 AM lcvette: ok, im rebooted
11:00 AM BeachBumPete: Oh OK how does it feel? ;)
11:01 AM lcvette: like progress
11:01 AM BeachBumPete: hehe
11:02 AM lcvette: once im communicating with the i92, the config part i think will be easier, my buddy has the same machine and has it up and running already but with a 5i25/7i76/7i77 verse my 7i92/7i76/7i77
11:03 AM lcvette: so i think we just need to change a few pin locations to accomodate our wiring and the rest should be pretty similar?
11:05 AM lcvette: so do i just type "ping 10.10.10.10"
11:07 AM skunkworks: yes
11:07 AM lcvette: its doing stuff
11:07 AM Tom_L: what causes it to do an extra Z plunge on the tap?
11:07 AM lcvette: :O
11:07 AM Tom_L: is that the Z clear level?
11:08 AM skunkworks: yes - slow spindle acceleration - overershoots past 7clear
11:09 AM Tom_L: mine did that on some things but it was in the post which i think i fixed
11:09 AM lcvette: its still going
11:10 AM skunkworks: it will until you stop it
11:10 AM lcvette: is that normal?
11:10 AM Tom_L: no
11:10 AM skunkworks: can you copy/paste a sample?
11:10 AM skunkworks: smalle
11:10 AM Tom_L: well it does what it's told
11:10 AM lcvette: how do i stop it?
11:10 AM skunkworks: ctl -c
11:11 AM lcvette: ok

11:13 AM lcvette: good?
11:13 AM Tom_L: what's the issue?
11:14 AM lcvette: initial setup
11:14 AM lcvette: 7i92
11:14 AM lcvette: first ping test
11:14 AM Tom_L: are you using mesaflash?
11:14 AM lcvette: not yet?
11:14 AM lcvette: just a ping test
11:15 AM skunkworks: lcvette: great!
11:15 AM lcvette: ping 10.10.10.10
11:15 AM lcvette: sweet
11:15 AM lcvette: now what?
11:15 AM lcvette: lol
11:15 AM lcvette: you are Yoda
11:15 AM lcvette: the force is strong with you
11:16 AM skunkworks: 2 things. the right bit file in the 7i92 and the linuxcnc config
11:16 AM lcvette: i have it
11:18 AM Tom_shop: ./mesaflash --device 7i92 --addr 10.10.10.10 --readhmid
11:18 AM Tom_L: that will show you the config
11:18 AM lcvette: 7i92_7i77_7i76D.bit
11:19 AM lcvette: tom should i do that before flashing?
11:20 AM Tom_L: it will list what it currently has
11:20 AM lcvette: ok
11:20 AM Tom_L: you may need sudo with that
11:21 AM lcvette: sudo ./mesaflash --device 7i92 --addr 10.10.10.10 --readhmid
11:21 AM Tom_shop: yeah
11:22 AM skunkworks: you don't need ./ for the installed version
11:22 AM Tom_L: possibly :)
11:22 AM pcw_home: dont need sudo either
11:22 AM lcvette: ./mesaflash command not found
11:22 AM lcvette: lol
11:23 AM lcvette: yoda...
11:23 AM pcw_home: dont do the ./
11:24 AM pcw_home: that means run the mesaflash program from the current directory and will not work unless you have mesaflash in the current directory
11:25 AM pcw_home: (which would not be the normal situation)
11:26 AM lcvette: not working
11:26 AM pcw_home: command not found?
11:26 AM lcvette: no action requested
11:27 AM pcw_home: mesaflash --device 7i92 --addr 10.10.10.10 --readhmid
11:27 AM lcvette: command not found
11:27 AM Tom_L: make sure you have mesaflash
11:27 AM Tom_L: or locate the directory
11:27 AM lcvette: ok it worked
11:28 AM lcvette: how exciting!!!!!
11:29 AM Tom_shop: mesaflash --device 7i92 --addr 10.10.10.10 --write bitfilename.bit
11:29 AM lcvette: so this means im ready to flash the 7i92_7i77_7i76D.bit?
11:29 AM Tom_L: appears so
11:30 AM lcvette: mesaflash --device 7i92 --addr 10.10.10.10 --write 7i92_7i77_7i76D.bit
11:30 AM lcvette: will it know where to get the file from?
11:31 AM Tom_L: you will need the path for it
11:31 AM lcvette: i saved it on a folder on my desktop
11:31 AM pcw_home: no you must run the command whwre the bitfile is (or give it a complete path)
11:32 AM skunkworks: so cd /home/username/Desktop
11:33 AM skunkworks: I mean cd /home/username/Desktop/foldername
11:33 AM skunkworks: remember Tab complete is your friend.
11:33 AM pcw_home: or ~/Desktop/foldername
11:33 AM skunkworks: (I can never remember that...)
11:33 AM lcvette: mesaflash --device 7i92 --addr 10.10.10.10 --write /home/chris/Desktop/Mesa Files/7i92/configs/hostmot2/7i92_7i77_7i76D.bit
11:33 AM lcvette: like that?
11:34 AM Tom_L: missing a /
11:34 AM Tom_L: between Mesa and Files
11:34 AM lcvette: thats the folder name
11:34 AM skunkworks: space in the folder name?
11:34 AM pcw_home: command lines and filename/directories with spaces dont get along very well
11:34 AM lcvette: yes
11:35 AM lcvette: ok, ill change folder name
11:35 AM pcw_home: I would use cd to get there
11:35 AM skunkworks: rename it - use an _ it will be easier
11:35 AM pcw_home: otherwise you must "escape" the spaces with backslashes
11:36 AM lcvette: mesaflash --device 7i92 --addr 10.10.10.10 --write /home/chris/Desktop/Mesa_Files/7i92/configs/hostmot2/7i92_7i77_7i76D.bit
11:36 AM lcvette: ok folder fixed
11:36 AM lcvette: whats cd?
11:37 AM skunkworks: change directory
11:37 AM lcvette: i saw that in a video earlier
11:37 AM lcvette: just typ cd
11:37 AM lcvette: in terminal first
11:38 AM lcvette: before doinf the mesa flash
11:38 AM pcw_home: cd by itself will bring you to your home directory
11:38 AM lcvette: ok
11:38 AM pcw_home: cd with a subdirectory name will enter that subdirectory
11:38 AM pcw_home: cd with .. with go up one level
11:40 AM pcw_home: cd ~/Desktop/Mesa_Files/7i92/configs/hostmot2/ should get you to the folder with the bitfiles
11:41 AM Tom_L: always remember linux is case sensitive though
11:41 AM lcvette: yes... learned that
11:41 AM lcvette: im getting confused
11:42 AM lcvette: do i have to do the cd?
11:42 AM Tom_L: if you want to change to a directory yes
11:42 AM Tom_L: cd space /directoryname
11:43 AM pcw_home: if you cd to the bitfile directory, you don't need to include the full path in the mesaflash command
11:43 AM Tom_L: does it install with linuxcnc now?
11:44 AM pcw_home: I think you still need to apt-get install it
11:44 AM lcvette: i have mesaflash
11:44 AM Tom_L: i didn't read the scroll all the way back..
11:45 AM lcvette: it is the latestversion
11:45 AM skunkworks: it might be on the stretch image. I don't remember
11:45 AM lcvette: i checked that last night
11:45 AM pcw_home: Yeah I dont have stretch here so dont know
11:45 AM lcvette: i am just trying to sort ll the instructions coming at me
11:45 AM lcvette: lol
11:45 AM Tom_L: i made a file to keep alot of them in :D
11:45 AM Tom_L: or i would forget
11:46 AM lcvette: mesaflash --device 7i92 --addr 10.10.10.10 --write /home/chris/Desktop/Mesa Files/7i92/configs/hostmot2/7i92_7i77_7i76D.bit
11:46 AM lcvette: will that work without the cd thing?
11:46 AM Tom_L: Mesa Files is wrong
11:46 AM pcw_home: yes if thats the correct path
11:46 AM Tom_L: typo
11:46 AM lcvette: with the underscore
11:46 AM lcvette: its the path from the file header
11:46 AM lcvette: i cpied it
11:47 AM pcw_home: yeah no spaces (but tab complete can held with those...)
11:47 AM Tom_L: should work
11:47 AM pcw_home: can help
11:47 AM lcvette: mesaflash --device 7i92 --addr 10.10.10.10 --write /home/chris/Desktop/Mesa_Files/7i92/configs/hostmot2/7i92_7i77_7i76D.bit
11:47 AM Tom_L: fire when ready
11:47 AM skunkworks: try it
11:47 AM * Tom_L hides behind skunkworks
11:48 AM lcvette: worked
11:48 AM lcvette: now i need to reboot?
11:48 AM pcw_home: now do mesaflash --device 7i92 --addr 10.10.10.10 --reload
11:48 AM Tom_L: now do the --readhmid line and it will show you after you reboot the card
11:48 AM pcw_home: no reboot
11:48 AM Tom_L: or the reload line
11:49 AM lcvette: ok
11:49 AM pcw_home: no need to reboot computer , just reload command or power cycle card
11:49 AM lcvette: did reload
11:50 AM Tom_L: mesaflash --device 7i92 --addr 10.10.10.10 --readhmid
11:50 AM pcw_home: the readhmid command should be different now
11:50 AM lcvette: ok.. card is powered by pc power supply via relay
11:50 AM lcvette: can i just unplug the power connector safely from it?
11:50 AM Tom_L: i do
11:51 AM pcw_home: You dont need to if you issued the reload command
11:52 AM pcw_home: same as a power cycle
11:53 AM pcw_home: (reload is the same as a power cycle I mean)
11:53 AM lcvette: ok, i powered the board down and back on
11:54 AM pcw_home: OK but thats not needed if you did the reload
11:55 AM lcvette: ok
11:56 AM lcvette: ok did the read hmid
11:58 AM lcvette: chris@cpe-2606-A000-FEC8-3700-20F-B5FF-FE37-1460:~$ mesaflash --device 7i92 --addr 10.10.10.10 --readhmid Configuration Name: HOSTMOT2 General configuration information: BoardName : MESA7I92 FPGA Size: 9 KGates FPGA Pins: 144 Number of IO Ports: 2 Width of one I/O port: 17 Clock Low frequency: 100.0000 MHz Clock High frequency: 200.0000 MHz IDROM Type: 3 Instance Stride 0: 4 Instance Stride 1: 64 Register
11:59 AM lcvette: how cn i tell if it took?
12:08 PM lcvette__: join
12:10 PM lcvette__: ok, so assuming the 7i92 is flashed with the corret bitfile, i am now ready to strt building a 5i25 config file? is this correct?
12:11 PM pcw_home: yeah
12:14 PM IchGucksLive: hi
12:16 PM lcvette__: saweet!!!!! thanks to all of you for your help!!! i will pay it forward by writing up a detailed easy to follow instruction for the new linux userin easy to follow terms
12:16 PM lcvette__: maybe it will help save some of you guys the headacheof dealing with another me..lol
12:19 PM fragalot: hi
12:19 PM IchGucksLive: pcw_home, what board has he on the 7i92
12:22 PM pcw_home: I think both a 7I76 and a 7I77
12:23 PM lcvette__: hi
12:23 PM lcvette__: yes both 7i76 and 7i77
12:23 PM IchGucksLive: lcvette__, im in germany do you got a mixed saystem with servo and stepper
12:24 PM lcvette__: no
12:24 PM lcvette__: all servos
12:24 PM lcvette__: axis are pulse
12:24 PM IchGucksLive: servo or hybrid
12:24 PM lcvette__: spindle servo is analog +-10v
12:24 PM lcvette__: servo
12:25 PM lcvette__: 3phase ac
12:25 PM IchGucksLive: so why the 7i76
12:25 PM lcvette__: drives are configred pulse only
12:25 PM lcvette__: was a mistake on drive manufacturers side
12:26 PM lcvette__: caused me a ton of headaches and money
12:26 PM IchGucksLive: ok so the 7i77 gets the encoder pulses in
12:26 PM lcvette__: they are offered either pulse or analog
12:26 PM lcvette__: correct
12:26 PM IchGucksLive: what mashine is it
12:27 PM lcvette__: chinese vmc
12:27 PM IchGucksLive: seams you know what you are doing the main route
12:28 PM lcvette__: https://www.cnczone.com/forums/uncategorised-metalworking-machines/309614-cnc-tormach-posts.html
12:28 PM lcvette__: machine is completely finished except the software side
12:29 PM IchGucksLive: ok im off its late here and the BBQ smells like butter melting in the Devels hole
12:31 PM lcvette__: mmmmmmm sounds good!!!!
12:31 PM lcvette__: enjoy!!
12:31 PM IchGucksLive: lcvette__, mashine seams cool hope you dident payd alot
12:31 PM IchGucksLive: there are at this days so many outranged
12:32 PM IchGucksLive: even big mashines here in germany at <5k USD
12:35 PM gloops: seem to get the feeling Ichs might have had one or two
12:35 PM lcvette__: yeah...
12:35 PM lcvette__: im pleased with my purchase so far
12:36 PM lcvette__: my buddy clint who has the same achine has had his running for 6 months and loves it
12:37 PM lcvette__: i cover the whole buying experience in my cnczone thread, so anyone considerin can follow my ups and downs and make a conscious decision of their own
12:37 PM lcvette__: i was the original test subect
12:37 PM lcvette__: lol
12:41 PM lcvette__: early on i was wowed by linuxcnc by cncbasher she was awesome in guiding me and helping. she was pushing me to get what i needed and i followed her every recommendation
12:42 PM lcvette__: and then one day she vanished, i dont know what happened to her, i hope she is ok, she just dissappeared comletely from the board andall communication
12:43 PM lcvette__: at that point i stated looking at industrial controllers, but some people from the board and friends said to give linuxcnc a try before going that route since i already had the cards and computer setup
12:43 PM lcvette__: so here i am
12:46 PM skunkworks: lcvette__: you have the right attitude..
12:46 PM skunkworks: you dont give up the first time something doesnt work
12:48 PM lcvette__: no... im either stubborn or to dumb to quit sometimes
12:48 PM lcvette__: lol
12:49 PM lcvette__: wife tells me that frequently
12:49 PM skunkworks: That is a very nice looking machine
12:50 PM lcvette__: thank you sir!
12:51 PM lcvette__: my wife calls it the cube of despair
12:51 PM lcvette__: but im planning to turn that around shortly
12:58 PM lcvette__: i just made a pos in the thread thaking you guys along with a finished picture of the electronics cabinet
12:59 PM lcvette__: sorry for the typos, vertical keyboard

01:15 PM lcvette__: im in the pncconf and it is asking under I/O Control Ports/Boards, None, One Parport, Two Parport
01:15 PM lcvette__: is this refering to the ports used on the 7i92?
01:15 PM lcvette__: if so i would select 2
01:20 PM Tom_L: never used pncconf
01:20 PM Tom_L: you won't use it long
01:20 PM alex_joni: that shoud be parallel port, so probably none
01:22 PM Lcvette: What else is there?
01:25 PM gregcnc_: don't the mesa cards show up under I/O boards?
01:28 PM Lcvette: No clue
01:28 PM Lcvette: I'm that new to linuxcnc
01:29 PM skunkworks: If you have a config from your friend - start with that
01:30 PM Lcvette: Don't have it yet let me see if he's around
01:30 PM Lcvette: He's in South Africa
01:30 PM Lcvette: Late there
01:35 PM Tom_L: there's a place further in to add the daughter cards
01:38 PM lcvette__: man there are alot of questions in this thing
01:38 PM lcvette__: lol
01:39 PM Tom_L: i've never used it but just took a quick peek
01:39 PM lcvette__: buddy: ah yeah its just like mach3 you just select your pins, super easy...
01:39 PM Tom_L: it will get you a basic config file you can start with but get used to the idea you will need to manually edit the config for your setup
01:39 PM lcvette__: lol
01:39 PM lcvette__: yeah
01:40 PM Tom_L: it's not too difficult and we will help
01:40 PM Tom_L: ie, you may not find your exact daughter board configuration in the list
01:41 PM Tom_L: is yours a stepper or servo setup?
01:41 PM lcvette__: i saw they list the 7i76 and 7i77
01:41 PM Tom_L: good
01:44 PM lcvette__: ok it populated some tabs now
01:45 PM lcvette__: i/o 2, i/o 3, 7i77 ss#0, 7i77ss#1, 7i77 ss#3
01:45 PM Tom_L: are you building a mill?
01:45 PM lcvette__: building?
01:46 PM lcvette__: no
01:46 PM Tom_L: what is this for?
01:46 PM lcvette__: its a chinese vmc
01:46 PM Tom_L: so a mill
01:46 PM Tom_L: you're converting
01:47 PM lcvette__: https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180505/7e5e2f0bec5a904681aa54dc814fac3a.jpg

01:49 PM Tom_L: nice n neat
01:49 PM Tom_L: gotta log in for the last one...
01:53 PM lcvette__: hmmm
01:53 PM lcvette__: not sure why
01:54 PM lcvette__: copied link the same way
01:54 PM lcvette__: same thread
01:55 PM lcvette__: https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160605/b064df24d7eb6206d90877686aea442d.jpg
01:56 PM lcvette__: here is the entire thread about my experience of buying it from start to finish
01:56 PM Roguish: lcvette___ if you don't mind, what was the cost? new or used?
01:56 PM lcvette__: https://www.cnczone.com/forums/uncategorised-metalworking-machines/309614-cnc-tormach-posts.html
01:56 PM lcvette__: i bought it new, it was built to order
01:57 PM lcvette__: its been a while since i last took count but i think around $15k
01:57 PM lcvette__: with everything
01:58 PM lcvette__: shipping etc
01:59 PM Roguish: I think i've looked over your cnczone post a while back.
02:00 PM lcvette__: i tried to be as thorough as possible
02:01 PM lcvette__: i know i didn't find much info on the process or what to expect ad got alot of conjecture
02:01 PM lcvette__: in the end im quite pleased
02:01 PM lcvette__: or will be very soon hopefully..lol
02:08 PM Lcvette: I just spoke to my buddy, he is going to wire a config file with my connections for me
02:08 PM Lcvette: He's a swell fella
02:09 PM Tom_L: if you bought it new, why are you converting it?
02:10 PM lcvette__: i bought it without controls, i need the flexibility to add so customization to it
02:10 PM Tom_L: i see
02:10 PM lcvette__: i did so with my smller machine but with mach3
02:11 PM lcvette__: i knew i wanted more stable platorm and rigid tap and encoder feedback etc.. so lcnc was the ogical choice at the time
02:11 PM Tom_L: and a smart one i might add :)
02:12 PM lcvette__: if it were to have been just a 3 axis vmc for light production i wold havetaken the industrial conrol probably
02:13 PM lcvette__: yeah, im excited
02:13 PM lcvette__: right now its input overload
02:13 PM lcvette__: overwhelming
02:13 PM Tom_L: does it have a tool changer?
02:13 PM lcvette__: yes
02:13 PM lcvette__: 12 tool carosel
02:13 PM Tom_L: carousel?
02:13 PM Tom_L: k
02:14 PM lcvette__: umm. one sec
02:18 PM lcvette__: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewQnvx73wDY
02:18 PM lcvette__: thats the same machine
02:18 PM lcvette__: its my buddy clints
02:19 PM Tom_L: he's running linuxcnc too?
02:19 PM lcvette__: yes
02:19 PM lcvette__: but a 5i25/7i76/7i77
02:19 PM Tom_L: yeah same basic setup as yours but ethernet
02:20 PM lcvette__: correct
02:20 PM Tom_L: wiring should be the same
02:20 PM lcvette__: and our connctions are a little different on the boards
02:20 PM lcvette__: I/O's
02:20 PM lcvette__: but same items
02:20 PM Tom_L: the 7i92 gives you enough io for all of it?
02:21 PM lcvette__: your scaring me
02:21 PM lcvette__: what do you mean?
02:21 PM Tom_L: you can add a sserial if you need more
02:22 PM lcvette__: im not allowed to use all the inputs and outputs on the two boards?
02:22 PM Tom_L: sure you can
02:22 PM lcvette__: ok
02:22 PM lcvette__: then yeah
02:22 PM Tom_L: you get 34 in all but sserial will give you more
02:22 PM lcvette__: i have left overs
02:22 PM Tom_L: you think you do
02:22 PM Tom_L: it adds up quick
02:22 PM lcvette__: for now
02:22 PM Tom_L: i added a pendant to mine
02:22 PM lcvette__: lol
02:23 PM lcvette__: exactly
02:23 PM lcvette__: i have a shuttle pro
02:23 PM lcvette__: not sure how that will work yet
02:23 PM Tom_L: servos, encoders, pendant, limit switches, estop... the list grows
02:23 PM Tom_L: carousel will take some
02:24 PM Tom_L: the non time critical things can be put on the sserial
02:24 PM lcvette__: its all wired already
02:24 PM Tom_L: wired to the mesa cards already?
02:24 PM lcvette__: yup
02:24 PM Tom_L: nice
02:25 PM Tom_L: the chinaco did that for you?
02:25 PM lcvette__: no
02:25 PM lcvette__: me
02:25 PM lcvette__: i wired everyting
02:25 PM lcvette__: they installed the main power wiring
02:25 PM lcvette__: and the servo drives and motors
02:26 PM lcvette__: and atc with its sensors and motor etc
02:26 PM lcvette__: i connected everything to the mesa cards
02:26 PM lcvette__: id the field power
02:27 PM lcvette__: made an elaborate schematic for theentire macine
02:27 PM lcvette__: worried peter to death
02:27 PM lcvette__: lol
02:27 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Mill_Steel/Assembly/Final/Mister1.jpg
02:27 PM Tom_L: i built that from scraps
02:28 PM Tom_L: well under 15k :)
02:29 PM Tom_L: what are your plans for the machine?
02:29 PM Tom_L: hobby or commercial?
02:29 PM lcvette__: that is a fantastic weldment machine!!!
02:29 PM lcvette__: i love it!!
02:29 PM Tom_L: thanks
02:30 PM MarcelineVQ: it really is, that's the kind of machine you think about when you think of quality home-made
02:30 PM lcvette__: i am upgrading from a 10 year old completely worn to the ground grizzly G0704
02:31 PM Roguish: Tom_L: hey, how'd you get it all square? how square do you figure it is?
02:31 PM Roguish: i see a few shims under the column in the back....
02:32 PM Tom_L: Roguish, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GtFTRyS__Yc
02:32 PM Tom_L: poor video..
02:32 PM Tom_L: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBHNrJPnAaU
02:32 PM lcvette__: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7JMN_EYsWQ&t=246s
02:32 PM Tom_L: making a speed handle for the vise
02:32 PM Roguish: how about x axis to y axis ?
02:33 PM Tom_L: as square as i can measure
02:34 PM Tom_L: for a hobby machine i'm happy
02:34 PM Roguish: i'm contemplating making a mill also, and squaring it all in is a big concern. want it good to low tenths.
02:34 PM Lcvette: I'm a small home business from hobby to business
02:34 PM Tom_L: since i went with a hole pattern instead of slots, i drilled those after mounting so it should be pretty square
02:35 PM Roguish: thinking of starting with a granite surface block as the primary base.
02:35 PM Tom_L: yeah
02:35 PM Tom_L: i'm waiting to see fragalot's
02:35 PM Roguish: is he doing the epoxy job?
02:35 PM Tom_L: yes
02:36 PM Tom_L: considering i went from a sherline, i'm very pleased
02:36 PM Roguish: cool. i'm watching local craigslist for a surface block, like 24x36 size....
02:36 PM Tom_L: in fact, i'm still using the sherline spindle
02:37 PM Tom_L: or a grave marker..
02:37 PM Roguish: did you look at the tormach spindles? atc type
02:37 PM Tom_L: no not yet
02:37 PM Tom_L: i've got lots of holders for this is one reason i'm using it
02:38 PM lcvette__: not sure if you were aware, but mcmaster sells precision ground steel plates in big sizes
02:38 PM Roguish: i really want an atc, or at least atc convertable
02:38 PM lcvette__: not terrible in price
02:38 PM Tom_L: it would be nice i agree
02:38 PM lcvette__: im considering using some for a small slnt bed kathe build
02:38 PM Tom_L: i can still preset my tools but manually change them
02:39 PM lcvette__: videos are awesome guys
02:39 PM lcvette__: machine makes some nice surface finishes!!
02:40 PM Roguish: something like http://www.grizzly.com/products/24-x-36-x-4-Granite-Surface-Plate-2-Ledges/G9657
02:41 PM lcvette__: wow, thats a great deal
02:41 PM Roguish: shipping is the killer.
02:42 PM lcvette__: yeah.. wish i had a grizzly closer
02:43 PM Tom_L: see, we show you these things to motivate you to get yours done
02:46 PM lcvette__: lol
02:46 PM lcvette__: i have a list of build project in the shute for this machine
02:47 PM lcvette__: things the grizzly didnt have the accuracy or envelope to handle
02:54 PM lcvette_: lunch time
02:55 PM lcvette_: where is everyone from anyhow?
02:55 PM lcvette_: im in WIlmington, NC
02:55 PM lcvette_: anyone nearby?
03:04 PM gloops: nope, yorkshire here
03:17 PM CaptHindsight: Roguish: https://www.mscdirect.com/product/details/02553709
03:18 PM CaptHindsight: these used to be Grade A and be 30% off every few weeks
03:18 PM CaptHindsight: when it was Enco
03:18 PM Roguish: thanks. my price shows at 243.23. available frrom Reno.
03:19 PM CaptHindsight: plus shipping?
03:19 PM Roguish: i use msc shipping from Reno as it's usually next day delivery for standard ups.
03:20 PM CaptHindsight: yeah, Enco was next day for me
03:20 PM Roguish: shipping on that shows at 255.90
03:20 PM CaptHindsight: in fact it would be on the truck within ~15 minutes from my order and be here before noon the next day
03:20 PM XXCoder: CaptHindsight: weird rock color
03:21 PM CaptHindsight: pink like a sick eye?
03:21 PM BeachBumPete: any of you guys tried to scale an entire sketch in F360?
03:21 PM XXCoder: no, gray
03:21 PM XXCoder: I know of pink type
03:21 PM BeachBumPete: I imported a 2d .dxf from draftsight and somehow it imported a different size
03:21 PM XXCoder: even a little bit brown
03:21 PM CaptHindsight: XXCoder: I wish they came in crazy colors
03:22 PM XXCoder: I wonder if epoxy grinite can be used as surface heh
03:22 PM CaptHindsight: day glo orange
03:22 PM CaptHindsight: if you make it flat enough sure
03:22 PM Roguish: BeachBumPete: ya gotta be really careful exporting from acad. do it from model space
03:23 PM Roguish: not a scaled paperspace viewport
03:23 PM CaptHindsight: the adhesive will wear, so you'll get micro-pits over time
03:23 PM CaptHindsight: like your cars paint
03:23 PM BeachBumPete: of course
03:23 PM BeachBumPete: I thought draftsight my setting was unitless
03:23 PM BeachBumPete: but somehow it imported incorrectly sized.
03:24 PM BeachBumPete: looks good tho
03:24 PM BeachBumPete: just want to extrude it and get on with the CAM goodness ;)
03:25 PM BeachBumPete: when I try to select all and then use the commant scale
03:25 PM BeachBumPete: it does not give me the press pull icons
03:25 PM BeachBumPete: just the point I am clicking turns white
03:26 PM BeachBumPete: drawing in model space is 1-1
03:27 PM BeachBumPete: I only use sheet space when I have to plot/print
03:32 PM MarcelineVQ: have you googled the issue? it looks to be pretty common so people might have figured out solutions. the scale tool should let you specify numbers instead of trying to find a spot to drag as well.
03:32 PM BeachBumPete: I am trying to watch some videos now
03:33 PM BeachBumPete: the command just has select entities and then point select that I can see
03:33 PM MarcelineVQ: are you in sketch space or model space for that? idk if it matters. I'd hop on windows and try to figure it out with you but I don't have irc on there, or I wouldn't get any work done :X
03:34 PM BeachBumPete: hehehe its Saturday man work can wait... this is for fun
03:35 PM MarcelineVQ: well, that's hard to argue with. can you share the file? :>
03:36 PM BeachBumPete: its just a sketch right now but I don't mind. just gotta figure out how LOL
03:36 PM MarcelineVQ: I mean the dxf file in case it's unclear, so I can try and reproduce the steps
03:37 PM BeachBumPete: basically it is a sketch of a custom Field Target stock I got from a photo online. I wanted to trace it, import the .dxf, extrude it and then sculpt it to be different than the photo to my tastes. I want to try to CNC machine it
03:37 PM BeachBumPete: no problem...how should I share it?
03:38 PM MarcelineVQ: good question, I've not done that in awhile hmm, maybe https://mega.nz/
03:40 PM MarcelineVQ: ah looks like a common service these days https://www.file.io/ is simpler
03:41 PM BeachBumPete: https://file.io/gAlhWJ
03:41 PM MarcelineVQ: says not found, oh, haha, I think it deletes it after the first view so if you tested it it went away. that's funny
03:42 PM BeachBumPete: I did not test it
03:42 PM MarcelineVQ: odd then
03:43 PM BeachBumPete: https://file.io/ZoI5Sd
03:43 PM BeachBumPete: you would think scaling a sketch would be a piece of cake
03:44 PM MarcelineVQ: odd 404 for these, they're not doing a good job of making me want to use their site
03:44 PM XXCoder: https://www.sendspace.com/
03:44 PM BeachBumPete: https://file.io/n8w2G5
03:44 PM XXCoder: sendspace is very simple
03:45 PM MarcelineVQ: I wonder what the deal is, what is checking these links before they get to me and causing the delete. suspicious
03:45 PM XXCoder: pm it
03:45 PM XXCoder: maybe its irc preview function that views it lol
03:46 PM XXCoder: dunno whay you guys are using for irc client
03:46 PM MarcelineVQ: or some bot checking it hehe
03:46 PM MarcelineVQ: probably better off to use this sendspace as XXCoder suggests
03:46 PM BeachBumPete: probably just taking them and using them for thier own uses LOL
03:46 PM gloops: this looks useful stuff https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2mm-3mm-5mm-10mm-8ft-x-4ft-foam-pvc-rigid-foamex-sheet-board-panel-cladding/252928414823?
03:47 PM BeachBumPete: honestly the sketch is not really relevant to the problem I don't think
03:47 PM BeachBumPete: I mean just take any sketch you have and try to scale it the whole thing
03:47 PM MarcelineVQ: I'd hope not, but there's a few settings involved in importing a dxf so it could matter
03:47 PM BeachBumPete: should not matter what is in it really
03:47 PM BeachBumPete: oh really?
03:48 PM BeachBumPete: it just imported for me without any prompts
03:48 PM MarcelineVQ: ah I see, the first link google gives me says there's a tool to use for this that has more options https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/fusion-360/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/Imported-DXF-file-in-Fusion-360-is-not-to-the-correct-scale.html
03:48 PM MarcelineVQ: idk if that's current though since I don't have fusion open
03:49 PM BeachBumPete: LOL that would explain it
03:50 PM MarcelineVQ: that's why I asked if you had googled it hehe, my fault for not being more specific right away
03:50 PM BeachBumPete: Hey thanks man it appears to have worked perfectly
03:51 PM MarcelineVQ: right on
03:52 PM gloops: https://scontent.fman1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/29683779_10101708881784300_6295393074977807998_n.jpg?_nc_cat=0&oh=4dbf889344472ac9641b436dfacf3afe&oe=5B559601
03:52 PM BeachBumPete: it appears to be correctly sized to four decimal places ;)
03:53 PM MarcelineVQ: gloops: take a big machine to cut that, wonder if the top layer is hiding joinery
03:54 PM gloops: 11x7 feet
03:54 PM XXCoder: is that some park sign?
03:54 PM gloops: https://scontent.fman1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/29695069_10101708881774320_1511470063346699325_n.jpg?_nc_cat=0&oh=d0364237cb9f4d42d612e02c79f9185b&oe=5B5A6A87
03:54 PM gloops: yeah, woman made it from foam, price $8000 (she says)
03:55 PM gloops: ive been looking for something suitable for outdoor stuff, real wood is too much messing, plywood - a bit rough
03:55 PM MarcelineVQ: better be thick paint then, the sun won't take too long to bake foam
03:55 PM gloops: seems high density foam is the answer?
03:55 PM MarcelineVQ: could be uv resistant foam I guess
03:56 PM XXCoder: foam sign gets real ugly down the road
03:56 PM MarcelineVQ: gloops: check out your local plastic shop if you want find one
03:56 PM gloops: Marceline well, i looked the stuff up and it says suitable for *short term* signage, so youre probably right
03:56 PM MarcelineVQ: there's a lot of applications for carving up a sheet of plastic into things
03:56 PM MarcelineVQ: * you can find one
03:57 PM gloops: there is also waterproof mdf
03:57 PM BeachBumPete: https://i.imgur.com/hD7IhOm.jpg
03:57 PM BeachBumPete: its a start ;)
03:57 PM gloops: but not found any online here, moisture resistant but not waterproof
03:58 PM MarcelineVQ: plastic can get pretty expensive compared to wood but there's more options in what you can do with it, including not having to paint it and getting a nice surface finish. there's plastic with color layers so different colors are exposed as you cut, excellent for signage
03:58 PM BeachBumPete: is that azek?
03:58 PM MarcelineVQ: BeachBumPete: looks like a coilgun from a video game :D
03:59 PM gloops: Marcel ill have to delve deeper, i can get a foam board thats got a hard white plastic skin, as used for fascia boards that kind of stuff
04:00 PM BeachBumPete: https://i.imgur.com/IU4VY5m.jpg
04:00 PM MarcelineVQ: whacky stock
04:00 PM BeachBumPete: one man's whacky is another man's gorgeous ;)
04:00 PM MarcelineVQ: gloops: this is the stuff I mean there http://www.kingplastic.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/King-ColorCore-Literature.pdf
04:01 PM MarcelineVQ: the layering lets you just cut the letters into the sign and you're done, poof, 12 year sign done
04:01 PM XXCoder: its envormentally nice also. nice
04:02 PM gloops: that would be good for signs
04:02 PM MarcelineVQ: and it even has the properties in the brochure so you can do material strain tests in fusion if you had a lot of free time
04:03 PM MarcelineVQ: dunno why you't want to do physical sims on your signs, but hey
04:03 PM Tom_L: BeachBumPete, you strummin guitars yet?
04:03 PM BeachBumPete: yeah man taking lessons actually starting tuesday
04:03 PM Tom_L: with the new one?
04:03 PM BeachBumPete: I have that strat copy I cleaned up and fixed up
04:03 PM CaptHindsight: a pink/red and white version might look like taffy
04:04 PM BeachBumPete: no the kit guitar is going to take awhile
04:04 PM BeachBumPete: and the Fender squire Strat I bought at a yard sale is also a project. Got it all sanded down now
04:04 PM BeachBumPete: ordered and received a pretty new pearloid pick guard
04:04 PM Tom_L: i recall you getting a couple
04:05 PM BeachBumPete: trying to decide on which machine tuners to get
04:05 PM BeachBumPete: I want this one to be a classic cream color
04:05 PM BeachBumPete: It is so fun playing with them man
04:05 PM CaptHindsight: BeachBumPete: did you make the colored wood laminate or just carve it?
04:05 PM BeachBumPete: I have that Focusrite Scarlett 6i6
04:06 PM XXCoder: 48” x 96”pretty large
04:06 PM BeachBumPete: CaptHindsight I did not make that it is a photo of one I am trying to sort of recreate
04:06 PM CaptHindsight: ah sorry
04:06 PM BeachBumPete: but yeah I have several laminate blanks here
04:06 PM BeachBumPete: I am working on another stock for my RWS54 as well...
04:06 PM CaptHindsight: I've never seen wood sold like that, just the plastic laminate
04:07 PM BeachBumPete: https://i.imgur.com/OdvtTwY.jpg
04:07 PM BeachBumPete: that is my progress so far on the RWS54 project
04:07 PM BeachBumPete: it has a bit of a ways to go
04:08 PM BeachBumPete: gotta cut the cheekpiece for the adjustable hardware and a lot more shaping etc.
04:08 PM BeachBumPete: you can buy that laminate plywood from many online suppliers
04:08 PM MarcelineVQ: that's pretty neat wood
04:09 PM Tom_L: BeachBumPete, did you catch the post the other day about my kid?
04:09 PM CaptHindsight: Spectraply

04:10 PM BeachBumPete: https://www.boydsgunstocks.com/
04:10 PM BeachBumPete: Tom_L not that I recall

04:11 PM Tom_L: he was invited to the skillsUSA competetion for the state for cnc specialist. amongst other things, they had to hand code a part
04:11 PM BeachBumPete: I bought my blanks from those guys I think
04:11 PM CaptHindsight: surprised the machoness allows for it
04:11 PM Tom_L: he was rather unsure of himself but came back with 1st place
04:12 PM Tom_L: so he gets to go to Louisville for a week for a national competetion
04:12 PM BeachBumPete: They used to be made by rutland plywood but apparently they had a huge facility fire
04:12 PM BeachBumPete: Tom_L that's fantastic man like father like son eh?
04:12 PM Tom_L: something like that
04:12 PM Tom_L: if by chance he won national he would go to Shanghai
04:13 PM CaptHindsight: lots of Chinese there :)
04:13 PM Tom_L: hah
04:14 PM Tom_L: already getting offers from Spirit
04:14 PM BeachBumPete: thats great man
04:14 PM Tom_L: he's nervous as hell
04:14 PM CaptHindsight: what's the event/contest/competition called?
04:15 PM Tom_L: https://www.skillsusa.org/
04:15 PM Tom_L: he competed in cnc specialist
04:15 PM CaptHindsight: first I've heard of it
04:15 PM Tom_L: dunno how long it's been around
04:16 PM Tom_L: they asked him to compete last year but he declined
04:17 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.skillsusa.org/about/history-brand-resources/
04:17 PM CaptHindsight: founded in 1965
04:17 PM Tom_L: off to mow..
04:17 PM BeachBumPete: go mo
04:18 PM BeachBumPete: I actually gotta mow too but don't really feel like it LOL
04:18 PM Tom_L: i never feel like it
04:18 PM CaptHindsight: we had the 3rd coldest April on record and today is in the 80's
04:18 PM Deejay: gn8
04:18 PM CaptHindsight: Tom_L: did you summer arrive as well?
04:18 PM BeachBumPete: GN* DEEJAY
04:18 PM CaptHindsight: you/your
04:19 PM CaptHindsight: BeachBumPete: was it you or someone else that stalked Deejay and got them to interact with more than GN and GM?
04:19 PM CaptHindsight: heh
04:20 PM BeachBumPete: huh?
04:20 PM BeachBumPete: I just always say GN8 to him LOL
04:20 PM CaptHindsight: must have been somebody else
04:20 PM CaptHindsight: or might have been
04:28 PM gloops: sounds pretty final
04:53 PM gloops: cast iron welding rods arrived, its make or break time for my lathe top slide, literally
04:53 PM jdh: JB weld!
04:54 PM gloops: well, normally i would haha
04:54 PM XXCoder: interesting. pure css art http://diana-adrianne.com/purecss-francine/
04:54 PM XXCoder: displays fine on my browser lol
04:55 PM gloops: who is that?
04:55 PM XXCoder: nonexistant person likely
04:55 PM XXCoder: look at "first name" of purecss lol
04:55 PM gloops: yes, looks a bit reptilian
04:56 PM XXCoder: you belive on that eh
04:56 PM gloops: i keep an open mind i suppose
04:56 PM XXCoder: theres keeping mind open and theres so open brain falls out
04:56 PM XXCoder: I require evidence to change mind
04:56 PM XXCoder: but it is changable
04:57 PM gloops: and there is no evidence that reptilians dont exist
04:57 PM XXCoder: there's no evidence of monster behind you right now, invisble
04:58 PM XXCoder: lack of evidence of nonexistance is not by itself, proof of anything.
04:58 PM gloops: it isnt beyond reasonable speculation, a damaged alien vessel landed here thousands of years ago, unable to leave its crew decided to make a new home on earth
04:59 PM XXCoder: space is big.
04:59 PM jdh: so am I
04:59 PM XXCoder: here to nearest star is 4 years, at 196k km a second
04:59 PM gloops: maybe it isnt done that way
05:00 PM XXCoder: you can fit all planets in system within just distance between earth and moon (saturn is tilted)
05:00 PM gloops: there might be shortcuts
05:00 PM XXCoder: maybe, but possibility is not evidence of actual also.
05:00 PM XXCoder: for me, "I don't know" is honorable answer. not made up stories
05:02 PM gloops: there do seem to be accounts of visits from space in ancient texts
05:02 PM gloops: even landing craft
05:03 PM gloops: 'chariots of fire'
05:03 PM gloops: why would a primitive civilisation think of that?
05:04 PM XXCoder: well theres also tons of other nonsense
05:04 PM XXCoder: roll dice enough time, you might get 10 6 in a row
05:05 PM gloops: also evidence of solar systems that could not be known before high powered telescopes
05:06 PM gloops: i am sceptical but it is possible
05:06 PM XXCoder: oh I agree, it is possible, but I dont waste my time worrying
05:07 PM XXCoder: it may be, ironically, easier to travel in time than cross even span to nearest star
05:07 PM XXCoder: but also don't know
05:07 PM XXCoder: after all, everything is in motion
05:07 PM XXCoder: our sun, SOL, is moving at 72,000 kmh
05:08 PM gloops: relative to what?
05:08 PM XXCoder: to no movement
05:09 PM gloops: nothing moves in a void
05:09 PM gloops: a single object does not move in a void
05:10 PM XXCoder: more specific http://solar-center.stanford.edu/FAQ/Qsolsysspeed.html
05:11 PM XXCoder: ironically it would get sun 5.3 hours to cross earth to moon!
05:11 PM XXCoder: (ignoring sun diameter)
05:13 PM gloops: yes we are like ants on the pavement
05:13 PM XXCoder: not really
05:14 PM XXCoder: we are like an atom on ant
05:14 PM XXCoder: on pavement
05:14 PM gloops: our lives take place on a few yards of paving, we know nothing of the city around us
05:14 PM XXCoder: on earth
05:14 PM XXCoder: in solar system, as "universe" if scaled like that
05:15 PM XXCoder: everyone on earth would get 10 galaxies each, if some mad govement had a "giveaway"
05:15 PM gloops: im not sure how humans compare in terms of intelligence
05:16 PM gloops: we probably are as intelligent as aliens, but we have very little knowledge
05:16 PM XXCoder: we may be eldest sapient specues
05:16 PM XXCoder: who knows
05:17 PM gloops: i doubt any lifeform would evolve to higher intelligence, once you get to the point where you dominate your planet you stop evolving
05:17 PM XXCoder: stop evolving? who said?
05:17 PM gloops: biologically
05:17 PM XXCoder: no, we are still evolving
05:17 PM XXCoder: biologically.
05:17 PM gloops: not much
05:17 PM gloops: drifting maybe
05:17 PM XXCoder: well evolution never was speedy in most times
05:18 PM gloops: natural selection is suspended for humans
05:18 PM XXCoder: you said so but its not true
05:18 PM gloops: the majority survive to reproducing age
05:19 PM XXCoder: well it IS "surivial of good enough"
05:19 PM XXCoder: darwin got it kinda wrong
05:20 PM XXCoder: he thought only animals at peak condition breed
05:21 PM gloops: only animals that are alive, breed
05:21 PM XXCoder: but really its more like 90% of species get to breed, with 10% failing due to various problems and blind chance ) like accient that cuts balls off)
05:23 PM XXCoder: apparently theres company that reprocesses street gum into shoe soles
05:23 PM XXCoder: literal gumshoes lol
05:26 PM gloops: yes, in the environment we have made, selection continues, memes, business and so on
05:27 PM gloops: there are hawks and doves, and rats
06:02 PM JT-Shop: when rats have an excess of food they breed profusely, in poor times not much breeding
06:04 PM nallar is now known as Ross
06:11 PM Tom_L: CaptHindsight yes, it was ~80 today
06:13 PM Tom_L: ~86 tomorrow
06:15 PM CaptHindsight: wow, we cool off to around normal for the season after today
06:16 PM CaptHindsight: we has snow 2 weeks ago
06:17 PM Tom_L: it's been an odd year weather wise
06:20 PM JT-Shop: very
06:24 PM gregcnc_: pretty worm out there
06:24 PM gregcnc_: heh warm
06:25 PM gregcnc_: typical chicago winter/summer seasons
06:29 PM CaptHindsight: Spring and Fall have been canceled
07:10 PM enleth: damn, lifting the robot off its pallet and onto a permanent base requires a three-point lifting tackle
07:11 PM enleth: how the hell does one procure a safe three-point tackle out of rope slings?
07:11 PM enleth: the points are all on different heights on the robot base
07:12 PM Tom_L: loop cable with clamps
07:13 PM enleth: I think I'll just have to buy some more chain and shackles
07:21 PM jdh: what robot?
07:23 PM enleth: jdh: I bought an old broken KUKA KR200 robot last year and got it working but it's been just sitting there in the corner ever since because it needs a solid steel base to attach it to the floor - there's a basement underneath, so I can't just anchor it into the ground and forget about it
07:23 PM jdh: cool
07:24 PM enleth: and when I make that base, I have to move the thing off a wooden pallet it came on and onto that base
07:24 PM enleth: (and design the base so that it can be moved into place with a pallet jack with the robot on it)
07:25 PM enleth: I have a 2t chain hoist and some nice beefy steel beams supporting the ceiling that I use to support the hoist
07:26 PM enleth: but I need more chain, more shackles and a huge master shackle to be able to lift that robot
07:26 PM jdh: or sell it in place
07:37 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.cnczone.com/forums/benchtop-machines/355832-cnc-manufacturing-forum-posts-post2156972.html#post2156972
07:38 PM CaptHindsight: box ways and the slides are all aluminum ^^

08:45 PM CaptHindsight: so ban birds or big fans? :)
10:28 PM pink_vampire: hi
10:39 PM XXCoder: hey pink
10:44 PM XXCoder: pink_vampire: just destroyed 2 walls
10:45 PM pink_vampire: why????
10:45 PM XXCoder: felt like it
10:45 PM XXCoder: heh
10:45 PM XXCoder: no, we are adding isulation to that room
10:45 PM XXCoder: also finish adding network and tv cablke
10:46 PM pink_vampire: cool
10:46 PM XXCoder: I think one of my wisdom tooth finally decided to do something
10:46 PM XXCoder: and coming sideways lol
10:47 PM XXCoder: its flipping 20 years late, tooth. go back to your home
10:52 PM XXCoder: pretty amazing. finally playing unplayable records https://spectrum.ieee.org/tech-history/dawn-of-electronics/particle-physics-resurrects-alexander-graham-bells-voice
10:52 PM XXCoder: early ones was foil on cardboard, too frigile to play, and others was wax
10:52 PM XXCoder: some of records could be played but machine dont exist anymore
10:52 PM XXCoder: so they did it really hard way
10:58 PM XXCoder: pink_vampire: too bad I can't enjoy hearing voice of one person who tried to wipe deaf cultuire away: alexander graham bell. https://youtu.be/qf97H6cV5QQ
10:58 PM XXCoder: he did a lot of good, but also some bad
10:58 PM XXCoder: april 1885 jeez thats old
11:15 PM hazzy-dev: i spent all day prepping and painting an 02 Corolla, got everything base coated and was getting ready to shoot the clear when my compressor blew a hole in the tank
11:15 PM XXCoder: doh
11:15 PM XXCoder: hopefully it can be on hold
11:16 PM XXCoder: I know some stuff it can't be delayed even a minute once its ready
11:16 PM hazzy-dev: I was tempted to weld a patch on so I could finish the paint job, but that scares me a bit
11:16 PM XXCoder: like having epoxy just mixed and mold broke or something
11:16 PM XXCoder: eccch scary indeed
11:16 PM hazzy-dev: The paint should be OK, but it is not ideal to have it sit for more than a few hour
11:18 PM hazzy-dev: I think ill head to horrible freight first thing in the morning and get a cheapy for the interim, good thing they are open on sun
11:18 PM XXCoder: yeah better than ruined paint
11:18 PM Tom_L: how big a hole?
11:19 PM hazzy-dev: Not very big at all, maybe 30 thou
11:20 PM Tom_L: put a sheet metal screw in it
11:20 PM XXCoder: I wonder if fill hole with epoxy or something then LOTS tape around it would serve as repair
11:20 PM XXCoder: tom that would work?
11:20 PM hazzy-dev: Tom_L: I was very tempted to plug it, but then there is the risk of creating a projectile
11:20 PM Tom_L: we did it to an old tank
11:21 PM Tom_L: has several in it
11:21 PM Tom_L: but it's gone now
11:21 PM Tom_L: it's not gonna go far
11:21 PM XXCoder: hazzy-dev: maybe point it away into say foam and blanket in order to stop it if it blows
11:21 PM Tom_L: it's likely on the bottom anyway
11:21 PM Tom_L: where the rust sits
11:22 PM XXCoder: due to rusting?
11:22 PM XXCoder: yeah
11:22 PM hazzy-dev: As long as the whole tank does not blow it would be safe I guess, but now I am scared of the tank :D
11:22 PM XXCoder: we usually empty tank water once a while to ptrevent it
11:23 PM XXCoder: tom is there a way to keep water out?
11:23 PM Tom_L: remove it before it goes in?
11:23 PM Tom_L: no
11:23 PM hazzy-dev: I got this compressor in 02 so it is not very old and I drain the condensation regularly, so
11:24 PM Tom_L: mine goes up to 170psi
11:24 PM hazzy-dev: I guess you could put a line dryer after the pump, but before the tank ...
11:24 PM Tom_L: 80 gal
11:24 PM hazzy-dev: Tom_L: That is scary!
11:24 PM Tom_L: a little
11:24 PM XXCoder: I wonder if its possibvle to have auto-drainer
11:24 PM hazzy-dev: It is!
11:25 PM Tom_L: i put a ball valve on the bottom of that one
11:25 PM XXCoder: it releases once a while and detects water if water, do it again, if dry stop
11:25 PM hazzy-dev: https://www.harborfreight.com/automatic-compressor-drain-kit-68244.html
11:25 PM XXCoder: looking
11:26 PM hazzy-dev: it uses the air from the unloader to open the tank drain
11:26 PM Tom_L: that's not something i would buy there
11:26 PM XXCoder: so it automacally drains sometimes or what
11:26 PM Tom_L: only stuff i get there is stuff i plan on a one time use
11:26 PM hazzy-dev: it auto drains every time the pump shuts down
11:26 PM XXCoder: oh interesting
11:27 PM XXCoder: how do it know how to stop
11:27 PM Tom_L: that's just it, after a couple times it probably wouldn't
11:27 PM hazzy-dev: Good question, Ill have to get one and play with it, its worth the 9bux for the amusement of taking it apart :)
11:27 PM XXCoder: assuming its not made from chinseium? lol
11:27 PM Tom_L: it undoubtedly is
11:28 PM XXCoder: I know
11:28 PM Tom_L: 139 reviews with a 2star ratinmg
11:28 PM Tom_L: rating
11:29 PM hazzy-dev: Thats about as low a rating as HF stuff gets, must be pretty bad
11:29 PM Tom_L: Cons: Comes broken new
11:29 PM XXCoder: 62 one star
11:29 PM XXCoder: second highest is 3 stars, at 26
11:30 PM XXCoder: "This kit is more like an example kit, except the valve. The biggest issue with the 100 PSI Max working pressure valve is the max pressure is low. HFT does not sell many compressors at or below 100 PSI. Most are 125 or 150 units. On the 125, this unit might work (but it would be out of spec and potentially dangerous, and likely leak a lot.) It will not work at all on a 150 PSI compressor."
11:31 PM XXCoder: many of issues is due to hose blowing
11:31 PM XXCoder: few said replaced with copper hose and it works fine
11:32 PM Tom_L: I was moving my compressor (6.5 HP 80 Gal 175 PSI compressor I bought around 14 years ago) to my new shop and took a look to see if I needed to replace the drain. After 14 years the tank was completely dry. Great product!
11:32 PM Tom_L: pfft
11:32 PM XXCoder: nice
11:33 PM Tom_L: they should just spray the bottom half of the tanks with teflon
11:33 PM XXCoder: powder coat inside
11:33 PM hazzy-dev: hmm, seems somewhat promising, it they have not cheapened it up over the years
11:34 PM XXCoder: hazzy-dev: the hf autodrain thingy? seems to be ok-ish if you replace hose
11:34 PM hazzy-dev: Tom_L: For real, I was wondering it that stuff used to seal auto gas tanks would work in an air tank
11:34 PM Tom_L: gas tanks aren't under pressure
11:34 PM hazzy-dev: XXCoder: Yeahm seems the hose it the weak link
11:35 PM Tom_L: i'd shove a screw in it and go on down the road
11:38 PM hazzy-dev: Tom_L: I should probably put a screw in it for now, I don't need it to last for but a few more days anyhow as I just rebuild a devilbis pump and got a new ASME certified tank to build me a new compressor, but have not had the time to put it together yet
11:38 PM hazzy-dev: I need to get some bungs welded on the tank and I can put it together
11:49 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
