01:07 AM IchGucksLive: hi all
01:07 AM gloops: something i noticed, which i was going to deal with on my last machine but stopped using it, when running g-code, the code continues running before spindle reaches speed
01:10 AM gloops: i wonder if G4 would hold moves while spindle catches up
01:10 AM IchGucksLive: gloops, use spindel at speed pin
01:10 AM gloops: ahh so i havent got vfd feedback wired up Ichs?
01:11 AM IchGucksLive: http://linuxcnc.org/docs/html/examples/spindle.html#_spindle_at_speed
01:11 AM gloops: right thats what ive been looking for thanks
01:19 AM IchGucksLive: im off till later
01:41 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
01:44 AM Deejay: moin
02:22 AM Loetmichel: *hihi* our reisdent apprentice won the "project manager role" a few days ago.. live on a customer order... he is a BIT stressed out because boss gives him new priorities every few days and problems that stem from inexperienced workers... IF he survives this he is a keeper though ;)
02:23 AM Loetmichel: ( i have no time and boss fired the project manager engineer a few weeks ago...)
02:25 AM holzjunkie: Loetmichel: ?
02:25 AM gloops: well, like the gundog training
02:26 AM gloops: two ways to do it, you can bring a dog to the gun
02:26 AM gloops: or you can break a dog to the gun
02:27 AM selroc: hello
02:27 AM selroc: I have a nice proposal for seb: extend PyCAM to 5 axis
02:30 AM Loetmichel: gloops: in germany we say: "the best way to learn to swim is to jump/get thrown into the water where its deepest" :-)
02:37 AM selroc: so that pycam can compete with those commercial and high-pricing solutions
02:44 AM gloops: selroc just like that eh? lol
02:44 AM gloops: Loetmichel yes - thrown in at the deep end
02:45 AM selroc_: I am sure it cam be done
02:52 AM holzjunkie: hello everyone
03:09 AM gloops: have you got it working holzjunkie?
03:16 AM nallar is now known as Ross
03:34 AM holzjunkie: in thing i´m a little bit closer
03:39 AM holzjunkie: gloops: i thing i´m a little bit closer on it
03:53 AM gloops: you got the bit file done?
04:01 AM holzjunkie: in an hour i´m back so afk
04:27 AM Guest93900: Hi, Are the SPA and SPB addresses actual servers that can be reached through putty?
04:46 AM jthornton: morning
04:46 AM XXCoder: yo
04:48 AM jthornton: 70°F yesterday 36°F this morning
04:49 AM XXCoder: yay heh
04:49 AM XXCoder: here it went down just 10f to 45f
04:49 AM XXCoder: rainy a bit
04:50 AM jthornton: dang they are still calling for thunderstorms saturday at my brothers house
04:53 AM XXCoder: apparently some people was using drones to smuggle iphones into china.
04:53 AM XXCoder: 15k iphones a night
04:53 AM jthornton: I thought iphones were made in china
04:55 AM XXCoder: it is.
04:55 AM XXCoder: thing is it costs $3000 usd there
04:55 AM XXCoder: lots taxes and such
04:55 AM jthornton: ah
04:55 AM XXCoder: https://interestingengineering.com/smugglers-in-china-used-drones-to-carry-15000-iphones-across-the-border-each-night
05:15 AM gloops: hmm, successfully fitted an m10 coach bolt in engine to hold injector down lol
05:15 AM XXCoder: knew hammer would do it
05:15 AM gloops: well, it starts and runs anyway, how long it will stay there who knows
05:16 AM gloops: stripped threads of original bolt, m8 thread insert also stripped, tapped for m10 - sorted, luckily didnt penetrate water jacket
05:17 AM Ross- is now known as Ross
05:17 AM XXCoder: sppppplit banana
05:17 AM tumdedum_ is now known as tumdedum
05:21 AM Timbo_ is now known as Timbo
05:22 AM gloops: on news here - a 78 year old man has stabbed a burglar, who died last night
05:23 AM gloops: 2 broke into house and forced him into kitchen with a screwdriver, - struggle, seems he won
05:24 AM XXCoder: dang
05:25 AM XXCoder: https://youtu.be/h7NmRVDOOfQ nice
05:26 AM gloops: there was a case here a few years back a pensioner was mugged, he took the knife off the mugger and opened him up like a fish - turns out he was an ex paratrooper, speciality unarmed combat
05:32 AM XXCoder: dang
05:32 AM XXCoder: who knows what person had experence of.
05:33 AM Tom_itx: 28°F
05:36 AM Tom_itx: gloops, burgulars should do a background check before breaking in ehh?
05:37 AM Guest93900: Hi, Are the SPA and SPB addresses actual servers that can be reached through putty?
05:38 AM Guest93900: wtf, thought I was in #emc
05:38 AM Tom_itx: you are a misguided soul
05:38 AM Tom_itx: emc is not linuxcnc but used to be
05:38 AM Guest93900: Do they happen to have a new channel?
05:38 AM Tom_itx: can't help you there
05:39 AM Tom_itx: #emc redirects here afik
05:39 AM Guest93900: Ok thanks for info
05:39 AM Tom_itx: some legal thing about the names
05:41 AM Guest93900: Long shot maybe, but would you happen to know any good channel for where I could get a response to my question above?
05:51 AM miss0r: I hate printing official documents, where 5 pages are wasted because of page changes... FSCK !
05:51 AM miss0r: ... make that 7
05:51 AM gloops: Tom_itx yeah you never know who youre going to get
05:53 AM miss0r: gloops: hows that router of yours comming along?
05:53 AM gloops: miss0r its running just not got time atm
05:55 AM Tom_itx: Guest93900, long shot back: https://community.emc.com/docs/DOC-24684
05:56 AM Tom_itx: google can help you
05:56 AM miss0r: gloops: Looking forward for a sort of video overview with some cutting'n stuff. I feel like this should be channel property ;)
05:57 AM Tom_itx: yeah we want a full blown video series!
05:58 AM XXCoder: high quality handcam woobly videos?
05:58 AM miss0r: I'm thinking a face mounted camera & a high caffine intake prior to recording
05:59 AM XXCoder: get a vibirator pen and attach it to camera also
05:59 AM XXCoder: http://www.sensorycorner.co.nz/catalog/images/Vibrating%20Pen.jpg
05:59 AM miss0r: just in case the caffine abuse does not produce sufficient shaking
06:00 AM XXCoder: yup
06:00 AM miss0r: I remember those :D
06:00 AM XXCoder: cheaper than starbucks coffee ;)
06:00 AM miss0r: No doubt :D
06:02 AM miss0r: No matter how you do it, gloops, just make sure the audience gets sea sick right fast in a hurry :)
06:02 AM gonzo__ is now known as gonzo_
06:03 AM XXCoder: attach webcam to drill
06:03 AM XXCoder: spin it
06:04 AM miss0r: ... that ought to do it.. Just remember to throw in some random movements, those are what gets'ya
06:04 AM XXCoder: yep lol
06:04 AM XXCoder: get a super slow motion and spin it as fast as possible
06:04 AM XXCoder: I wonder if it would show as slow motion blur or just rotating slowly
06:05 AM Vq_ is now known as Vq
06:05 AM miss0r: Excellent question. :]
06:07 AM miss0r: This damn EU directive is a hurdle.. With the machine I've just installed I need to deliever the following, acording to 2014/35/EU: Construction drawings, Electrical diagram, Function description, User manual, Component list, Signed EU directive form & all the material in digital format as well. Also, I need to store it all for a minimum of 10 years from the sale date.
06:08 AM miss0r: Plus I'm probally forgetting something.. I need to get a closer look at this tonight
06:09 AM miss0r: All of that is needed, if the owners of the machine want to have it re CE labeled. And they do, of course :D
06:35 AM holzjunkie: hy so im back
06:36 AM holzjunkie: miss0r: did you make professionell retrofit?
06:36 AM miss0r: It has nothing to do with linuxcnc, actualy. I just made an automated cutoff catcher, to handle silicon wafers
06:37 AM miss0r: But it did include a step motor and alot of machining :]
06:38 AM miss0r: Damn. I'm going to run out of ink before this is done :D It looks like 250 ish pages of printed documentation
06:39 AM holzjunkie: that was not the poi, are you an machine builder to?
06:39 AM holzjunkie: Hy jt
06:40 AM jthornton: yey
06:40 AM alex_joni: morning jt
06:41 AM jthornton: morning alex
06:41 AM alex_joni: ltns :)
06:41 AM holzjunkie: sorry jt east or west coast?
06:41 AM miss0r: holzjunkie: Slowly turning into it, it would seem
06:42 AM jthornton: neither coast
06:42 AM miss0r: Mostly I just do repair jobs and small rebuilds ect. But lately people have been asking for bigger'n bigger stuff :)
06:42 AM holzjunkie: jthornton: ??
06:42 AM alex_joni: middle coast
06:43 AM holzjunkie: miss0r: that´s fine or isn´t but I know what you mean for EU device
06:44 AM jthornton: I'm on the ozark mountain coast
06:44 AM holzjunkie: graet planes!
06:44 AM miss0r: holzjunkie: yeah, its a pain :] But I do enjoy building machines
06:46 AM holzjunkie: miss0r: me to my problem are the electrical components.
06:46 AM holzjunkie: thats why i build lovlyest bicycles!
06:47 AM holzjunkie: jthornton: missouri
06:47 AM miss0r: I've spend the better part of a decade building electric process installations. I can handle the electric components & whatever documentation is required :] Its just alot of paper work. To the point of insanity
06:48 AM holzjunkie: yes i know it from the masterschool
06:49 AM miss0r: I should skip the electronics alltogether and just do the machining. I can have some other poor fool handle this :D
06:50 AM holzjunkie: that is an great idea if you have found someone let me know he can also make my mesa work;-)
06:51 AM Loetmichel: miss0r: stepper or servo?
06:51 AM miss0r: Loetmichel: luckily stepper
06:51 AM Loetmichel: steppers that get stuck dont kill the drivers
06:52 AM holzjunkie: hy michel
06:52 AM miss0r: that AND I don't have use the EMC directive
06:52 AM Loetmichel: or did you mean: the stepper has a burned coil, ist stuck BECAUSE of that and the reason for the burned coil is a dead driver?
06:52 AM miss0r: which would double the paper work
06:53 AM miss0r: At this point i'm happy I had a class called 'technical documentation' in highschool. The teacher of mine surely liked alot of paper work in the correct order.
07:06 AM miss0r: can anyone remember the link for the log in here?
07:06 AM jthornton: yea it's log
07:07 AM Hawku-fr is now known as Hawku
07:08 AM holzjunkie: jthornton: can i motivate you to help me?
07:10 AM jthornton: just ask your question... I'm off to the shower to start my day
07:12 AM holzjunkie: jthornton: ok if it´s ok for you i´ll wait for a while more so you can have your breakfast
07:12 AM holzjunkie: please write when you ready
07:12 AM jthornton: I'm not the only one here just ask your question
07:30 AM Tom_itx: i vaguely remember it
07:43 AM gregcnc_: miss0r sounds like the next job will be bid a little higher
07:43 AM miss0r: Not realy :] Luckily I was offered to do this by the hour
07:44 AM gregcnc_: time and materials is good
07:44 AM miss0r: indeed. This is been an excellent start for my selfemployment here.
07:45 AM miss0r: only been completely selfemployed for little over a month now.
07:47 AM miss0r: Now I have a stack of A4 paper, freshly printed. It measures 12.44mm in thickness. And this is only Datasheets for components & material used. (a boiled down version, mind you. The full version is only delievered on a USB key)
07:50 AM miss0r: Would any of you happen to have a drawer system roughly measuring HxDxW 800x1000x700 with 6 or more drawers in it, you want to sell me for a good price? :D
08:15 AM holzjunkie: so the system is installed, i can ping my 7i80 card i´ve connected the 7i77 to the 7i80 what is the next step?
08:16 AM CaptHindsight: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1294137530/the-first-desktop-waterjet-cutter/updates
08:16 AM CaptHindsight: pretty sure it was going to use lots of consumables
08:18 AM CaptHindsight: holzjunkie: what do you want to do?
08:20 AM CaptHindsight: holzjunkie: what have you done so far?
08:20 AM holzjunkie: CaptHindsight: I try desperately to set up an 7i77 over an 7i80 to get my millingcenter work again
08:20 AM CaptHindsight: is everything already wired up?
08:21 AM holzjunkie: CaptHindsight: I´ve installed linuxcnc stretch image
08:21 AM holzjunkie: did you mean behind the 7i77?
08:21 AM CaptHindsight: I'm taking off in a minute, and others here will need the details to help you
08:22 AM CaptHindsight: what exactly do you need help with?
08:22 AM holzjunkie: Network is wired, power is wired and passthrough, db25 is wired so far
08:24 AM holzjunkie: I don´t know whats the next step if I open the pncconfig i can choose the 7i80 but I can not choose the right firmaware
08:26 AM holzjunkie: on the terminal I can ping my 7i80 like: ping 192.168.1.121 . everything is fine
08:27 AM holzjunkie: but when I type: mesaflash --device 7i80 --addr 192.168.1.121 or 10.10.10.10 ii´ll get an error message: No 7i80 board found
08:30 AM holzjunkie: since friday i try to get it work but it wont I know I´m not the lightest candle on the cake but it should work somehow
08:31 AM MarkusBec: holzjunkie: are you sure that you ping the mesacard
08:32 AM holzjunkie: yes there is only the mesacard connected direct to the pc
08:33 AM MarkusBec: and no wifi?
08:33 AM holzjunkie: no
08:33 AM holzjunkie: if i pull out the powerplug there will come an error network not rechable
08:34 AM holzjunkie: this chat is running on an other pc
08:34 AM MarkusBec: ah ok
08:35 AM JT-Shop: what address did you set with the jumpers on the 7i80?
08:35 AM MarkusBec: in the past i had problems with the stock mesa flash
08:35 AM MarkusBec: and had to use the git version
08:35 AM JT-Shop: this is similar to what you need to do https://mesaus.com/info/7i76e.txt
08:37 AM holzjunkie: ok i´ll try the adress jumpers are default
08:38 AM pcw_home: also how is your host Ethernet interface setup?
08:38 AM pcw_home: (what is the host IP address)
08:39 AM pcw_home: I ask because I've have people setup the host as 192.168.1.121 and ping will work but you are not talking to the 7I80...
08:40 AM JT-Shop: also debian 9 uses a new name for network interfaces https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/djNPzsK93k/
08:40 AM * JT-Shop can't even start a fire with a blow torch this morning lol
08:40 AM codepython777: CaptHindsight: Didnt look like a big consumable list - > wazer
08:42 AM pcw_home: you can check your host IP address setup with the command "ip a"
08:42 AM codepython777: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1294137530/the-first-desktop-waterjet-cutter/updates - looked impressive to me
08:43 AM holzjunkie: pcw_home: the 7i80 is connected direct to mainboard
08:44 AM pcw_home: can you run "ip a" from a terminal and post the results to pastebin or similar?
08:44 AM holzjunkie: address 10.10.10.1 is this an example ip or should i set up it exact like tihs?
08:44 AM pcw_home: I normally use 10.10.10.1 if the 7I80 is set for 10.10.10.10
08:45 AM pcw_home: I use 192.168.1.1 if the 7I80 is setup for 192.168.1.121
08:49 AM holzjunkie: https://webmail.freenet.de/Cloud/?shareToken=b407d2ae2900282fa117357bf737a248b2b491793b8dc2cb3ca34b9333146fb2
08:49 AM holzjunkie: the result for ip a
08:50 AM pcw_home: Yes, you have the host set to the same address as the 7I80... that wont work
08:55 AM holzjunkie: and how to change ?
09:00 AM IchGucksLive: hi
09:00 AM IchGucksLive: sudo ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.1
09:01 AM IchGucksLive: holzjunkie, youi got it
09:01 AM holzjunkie: make a reset
09:06 AM holzjunkie: ifconfig / ipconfig befehl nicht gefunden command not found
09:07 AM sync: use ip
09:08 AM holzjunkie: if also tryed ipconfig
09:08 AM rmu_: holzjunkie: sudo ip a d 192.168.1.121/24 dev enp0s20
09:09 AM rmu_: holzjunkie: that deletes the wrong ip
09:09 AM sync: holzjunkie: ip
09:09 AM rmu_: holzjunkie: sudo ip a a 192.168.1.1/24 dev enp0s20
09:09 AM sync: not ipconfig.
09:09 AM rmu_: sets the right one
09:10 AM rmu_: holzjunkie: the reason you can not ping after unplugging the mesa card is some daemon senses the lost network link and disables the interface
09:11 AM holzjunkie: #ok there is no errer message
09:16 AM holzjunkie: thx a lot know it work!!!
09:16 AM holzjunkie: ETH device 7i80DB-16 at ip=192.168.1.121
09:16 AM holzjunkie: what´s todo next?
09:16 AM rmu_: rmu_: don't forget to persist the ip address in /etc/network/interfaces
09:19 AM holzjunkie: in /etc/network/interfaces is:
09:19 AM holzjunkie: adress 192.168.1.1
09:19 AM holzjunkie: netmask 255.255.255.0
09:20 AM holzjunkie: or should it be like in the manual:
09:20 AM holzjunkie: address 10.10.10.1
09:20 AM holzjunkie: netmask 255.255.255.0
09:22 AM rmu_: holzjunkie: if you change to 10.10.10.1 you have to change address (jumpers?) on the 7i80
09:23 AM holzjunkie: ok then i´ll let it like it is
09:24 AM holzjunkie: what should I do for next ?
09:26 AM pcw_home: you can check the firmware in the 7I80 with:
09:26 AM pcw_home: mesaflash --device 7i80 --readhmid
09:32 AM holzjunkie: if it has worked we have allready flashed the 7i80 to 7i77x4
09:33 AM holzjunkie: https://webmail.freenet.de/Cloud/?shareToken=66102706472e808c7457807659526b1245b0e8d8a73c026479ddb3c1ad8de4aa
09:59 AM fragalot: hi
10:17 AM McBird is now known as McBride36
10:30 AM holzjunkie1 is now known as holzjunkie
10:32 AM terry_: Hi everyone
10:34 AM terry_: What is the best/recommended way to have an OPTIONAL 4th axis? Two separate configs seems less then elegant.
10:35 AM terry_: BTW: mill
10:35 AM gregcnc_: If you have homing to index on the 4th you probably need two configs
10:35 AM terry_: Yes, the table does home.
10:36 AM gregcnc_: 4th axis?
10:36 AM terry_: Rotary table
10:36 AM gregcnc_: in that case the machine won't start without it being homed
10:37 AM gregcnc_: i don't use home on my 4th so it doesn't know whether it's plugged in or not
10:37 AM terry_: Oh ...
10:39 AM terry_: So it just take the startup position as zero degrees?
10:40 AM gregcnc_: yes, called immediate homing in the docs
10:40 AM gregcnc_: I do wonder though if you can configure with immediate homing and then home the 4th with g code if you need it
10:41 AM terry_: Interesting idea...
10:41 AM terry_: I could even manually home it?
10:42 AM gregcnc_: you can always touch off the 4th
10:43 AM terry_: Thanks, that seems like a better way to go then two configs.
10:45 AM gregcnc_: oh he's gone
10:46 AM gregcnc_: Depending on how you use the 4th it may not be convenient to have to touch off a fixture that doesn't get moved
10:50 AM gregcnc_: Tesla autocrash mode? https://youtu.be/6QCF8tVqM3I?t=25s
10:51 AM gregcnc_: https://youtu.be/VVJSjeHDvfY?t=27s
10:52 AM rmu_: it should be possible to rewire HAL home-pins on the fly, i.e. while linuxcnc is running, either connecting them to the "real" home or to the simulation if table is not connected
10:53 AM * Loetmichel needs to chisel the grin from his face... first drive home from work in the bmw convertible "open" this year... had to recharge the battery anyway, and the rain stopped and the sun came out juuuuust when workday was done ;)
10:53 AM gregcnc_: Loet snow here today, but the sun is out now
11:11 AM holzjunkie: so i´m back what is the next step to do?
11:11 AM holzjunkie: the 7i80 is flashed to 4x7i77
11:12 AM holzjunkie: Loetmichel: BMW nice which one is it ?
11:13 AM Loetmichel: E36 318i
11:14 AM Loetmichel: http://www.cyrom.org/palbum/main.php?g2_itemId=16706&g2_imageViewsIndex=1
11:15 AM holzjunkie: my first car was an E30 coupe 327i Alpina
11:16 AM holzjunkie: Nice with leather
11:17 AM Loetmichel: was a cheap impulse buy last year
11:17 AM Loetmichel: 900 eur
11:17 AM Loetmichel: already had to buy a new engine though
11:18 AM Loetmichel: original one threw a rod 1 month after i bought it ;)
11:21 AM holzjunkie: you had have alot of luck
11:26 AM Loetmichel: ?
11:27 AM Loetmichel: thats a "bastelkarre"
11:28 AM gregcnc_: toy car?
11:28 AM holzjunkie: nearby
11:28 AM Loetmichel: need to rainproof and repair the folding roof (sea in the foot wells after each rain), clean it a bit from the mold, then get rid of a few dents and bruises and wrap it. already bought the foild
11:28 AM Loetmichel: gregcnc_: tinkering car.
11:28 AM Loetmichel: it needs a LOT of tinkering to be back into good shape
11:29 AM gregcnc_: the interior of my E36 is falling apart
11:29 AM Loetmichel: also i need to correct the mistakes the previous owner made: he sawed off the shift stick, he mounte the ceapest aviable coilover set and a few more things.
11:36 AM holzjunkie: So I´ve to ask you. What should I do for next? the 7i80 is connected and flashed with 4x7i77 Firmware, the Connection is stable.
11:36 AM holzjunkie: the 7i77 is also wired up to the 7i80 incl. power passthrough
11:43 AM pcw_home: In general its better to power the 7I77 5V separately (not via the FPGA card)
11:57 AM IchGucksLive: hi
12:04 PM miss0r: hello fragalot. I was wondering when you would get home ;)
12:48 PM holzjunkie: pcw_home: thy for the tip i´ll change it asap
12:49 PM holzjunkie: pcw_home: if i´m right you are one of the heads of mesacards or ?
12:54 PM pcw_mesa: chief bottle-washer
12:54 PM pcw_mesa: (dont tell my wife)
12:55 PM JT-Shop: lol
12:55 PM Tom_itx: yeah, who _do_ you answer to ? :)
01:07 PM jdh: same as everyone
01:41 PM CaptHindsight: from the Lies. Lies and more Lies dept. http://www.3ders.org/articles/20180329-could-this-500-open-source-printer-be-the-reprap-of-3d-bioprinters.html
01:48 PM JT-Shop: some guy keeps sending me photos of his lathe wanting to know how to hook it up... going to be out of bandwidth if he doesn't stop
01:48 PM miss0r|office2: uh oh.. The notorious machinist stalker strikes again :o
01:51 PM JT-Shop: yea it's like WTF are you sending me photos of motors and circuit breakers for
01:55 PM CaptHindsight: some are extra crazy customers
01:56 PM CaptHindsight: the biggest time wasters besides the ones that ask for quotes and never buy anything are the ones that don't explain what the problem is, they just start with threats
01:57 PM JT-Shop: yikes
01:58 PM JT-Shop: I think I'll have a yogurt and take a short break from splitting firewood
02:02 PM CaptHindsight: "doesn't work" or "broken" as descriptions of the problem are also signs that it's going to waste some of your time
02:04 PM JT-Shop: yep
02:13 PM miss0r|office2: I'll say anything to distract me a bit from this EU directive... So much damn paper work
02:13 PM JT-Shop: he did wonder about the price until I explained all one has to do to make a one off part
02:13 PM roycroft: there's $100 just in measuring time
02:13 PM miss0r|office2: JT-Shop: The part sounds somewhat complicated?
02:14 PM syyl: theres already 50$ in the quote and explaining how long it will take!
02:14 PM roycroft: and you can tell him that he's already getting a $300 discount for his not being allowed to watch you make it
02:14 PM syyl: hrhr
02:14 PM syyl: "i can help you!"
02:15 PM roycroft: it costs double if he helps
02:15 PM syyl: "we can make it together. this will be great fun!"
02:15 PM roycroft: plus a 20% nuisance charge
02:15 PM syyl: :D
02:15 PM miss0r|office2: 'round here it'd be 200%
02:16 PM JT-Shop: miss0r|office2: https://www.amazon.com/Stens-285-585-Spindle-Assembly-Husqvarna/dp/B001UKV3LO
02:18 PM miss0r|office2: JT-Shop: so the entire assembly ?
02:18 PM gregcnc_: At a job I had a guy want to fist fight in the parking lot
02:19 PM JT-Shop: I think he just wanted the housing made from steel
02:19 PM miss0r|office2: JT-Shop: Alright. I think the $500 was actualy a good price, then :)
02:19 PM miss0r|office2: gregcnc_: How'd ya manage that?
02:19 PM JT-Shop: thanks, quoting is my weak point
02:19 PM gregcnc_: he didn't like the company policy
02:20 PM JT-Shop: alright break is over back to splitting firewood
02:20 PM miss0r|office2: JT-Shop: Me as well. I mostly end up charging too little to be honnest
02:20 PM miss0r|office2: have fun
02:20 PM miss0r|office2: gregcnc_: The part about paying real money for work?
02:20 PM gregcnc_: yeah something like 2USD
02:21 PM miss0r|office2: woah
02:22 PM CaptHindsight: we have one goof that started complaining before it even shipped
02:22 PM roycroft: he wants a steel housing because he breaks the aluminium ones?
02:22 PM CaptHindsight: confused shipping time with order time
02:22 PM roycroft: he would need to go through 23 of the ones on amazon before the custom steel one would pay for itself
02:23 PM roycroft: will a steel one last 23x as long?
02:23 PM roycroft: $500 is probably a bargain for that part, btw
02:23 PM roycroft: it's the "good neighbor" price
02:27 PM miss0r|office2: absolutly. I'm not sure it would make sense to have one in steel for durbility. But no doubt the $500 for that part was a bargin.
02:27 PM miss0r|office2: That part takes some machining to make from steel
02:28 PM roycroft: and it also costs more than $100 to measure/draw the original
02:28 PM roycroft: i did not know it was that complicated at first
02:29 PM roycroft: lunch time - yay!
02:29 PM miss0r|office2: I thought we were talking about a simple turning job, making a new shaft on the lathe or something
02:30 PM miss0r|office2: I forget alot of you guys are from the other side of the pond... I'm thinking about hitting the hay :D
02:31 PM gregcnc_: nobody makes a sturdier replacement?
02:32 PM XXCoder: good morning lol
02:32 PM XXCoder: greg that part is usually cast alum
02:32 PM Rab: What's the failure mode? Cracks around the bearing races, cracking midway, spinning bearings?
02:32 PM XXCoder: think that guy abuses it a lot
02:32 PM Rab: Flanges broken off?
02:33 PM gregcnc_: seems like someone could be making money of a better housing.
02:33 PM XXCoder: grass is very corrisive I wonder how guy would protect steel from it
02:33 PM XXCoder: or maybe he wanted it in stainless steel
02:36 PM Deejay: gn8
02:37 PM gloops: lawnmower broke?
02:40 PM XXCoder: I guess? lol
02:41 PM gloops: tommorrows appointment just phoned and said 'you are coming next week arent you?' so i said yeah, ill have that bonus day off tommorrow haha
02:42 PM gregcnc_: i guess the only people willing to pay for a decent spindle are commercial mower types
02:45 PM gloops: they dont know how to make a decent mower these days, the old atco mowers would level stoney ground off
02:45 PM XXCoder: I got idea
02:45 PM XXCoder: just make grass/rocks grinder mower :P
02:46 PM XXCoder: using giant grinder wheel
02:48 PM gloops: ive got an old hpward rotavator, its got a half inch driveshaft believe it or not, about 1ft long, hit tree stumps, rocks you name it, you cant break the shaft
02:48 PM gloops: howard
02:48 PM Rab: A steel spindle would be overkill to outlast the rest of the mower. All the other bearing and power transmission housings are surely similarly weak.
02:50 PM XXCoder: depends
02:50 PM XXCoder: if rocks is hit thats the first thing to break
02:50 PM XXCoder: so it may be worthy to do if person keeps hitting rocks
02:51 PM Beachbumpete1: ten minutes left and its time to go home :)
02:52 PM Beachbumpete1: Still have not found the right VMC unfortunately
02:55 PM Rab: I got a Black & Decker corded electric mower, really liked it. But there was no spindle as such; the blade was supported by the bottom of the motor shaft, and the motor bearings weren't anything special. (Might even have been sleeve bearings.) Any obstacle like a large rock would unbalance the shaft.
02:56 PM XXCoder: bleh wish there was good electric mower that dont need plug.
02:56 PM XXCoder: one mower being used is equal to 30 cars being used for a hour in pollution
02:56 PM Rab: Then the entire assembly would rapidly eat itself, down to the motor rotor dancing around in its cage and showering bits of molten metal.
02:57 PM Rab: B&D offered an $80 complete rebuild on that model. (The motor itself was over $100.) I took the rebuild deal three times over several years.
02:58 PM Rab: The last time I swore if it died again, I would put in some kind of beefy pillow block and a more serious motor.
02:58 PM Rab: Have not needed to use it this year.
03:00 PM gloops: better off with a couple of goats Rab
03:03 PM Rab: We had a goat when I was young, but the neighbors called animal control...hard to keep goats in the city.
03:04 PM gloops: they take some keeping in yes
03:08 PM JT-Shop: 3 hours left and I am at home
03:09 PM * JT-Shop started filling the last firewood bin YEA!
03:18 PM pcw_mesa: we looked into getting goats before we got our sheep but goats really are escape artists and much better climbers than sheep
03:30 PM gloops: to be fair if they are properly fenced in they arent that much trouble, got to watch the diet though, and worming
03:31 PM cpresser: pcw_mesa: which resources/docs should I read when I want to build my own sserial slave?
03:31 PM cpresser: i found some info in the stmlb sources
03:33 PM pcw_mesa: Yeah that would be my suggestion (plus the LBP+SSLBP docs in any Mesa sserial manual )
03:34 PM pcw_mesa: debugging can be helped by knowing the SSLBP state numbers (it will hang at the last state if it fails)
03:34 PM cpresser: ah yes, i have seen that secion in the 7i77 manual
03:35 PM cpresser: is there a minimal example of a sserial slave that you can/want share?
03:37 PM pcw_mesa: Well in foreign assy language: ssremote.asm...
03:38 PM cpresser: ouh, not sure if I want that^^ I will continue reading the SSLBP and LBP docs and the stmbl-code for now. and perhaps come back with better questions
03:41 PM pcw_mesa: first thing SSLBP does is ask for a cookie (if you can return the cookie and proper CRC, thats 1/2 the battle)
03:46 PM pcw_mesa: IICRC when we developed the protocol we made a simple command line utility that allowed you to type LBP commands in hex and print out the returned data
03:46 PM pcw_mesa: the utility appended the CRC info on xmit data automatically, so when debugging you might want a 115200 baud option on the remote so you can talk to your
03:46 PM pcw_mesa: remote with a standard PC/USB-serial dongle
03:51 PM cpresser: that sounds usefull. basically what I am looking for is something that is 'confirmed working'.
03:54 PM gloops: theres a facebook group 'home built belt grinders' with over 18000 members
03:54 PM gloops: https://www.facebook.com/groups/847488865357217/about/
03:54 PM gloops: mostly knife makers i suppose
04:15 PM andypugh: You might have heard of the Magnabend electromagentic sheet metal benders? ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OipSiPSRti8 ). Well, I don’t have one, but I do have a Magnetic drill… https://photos.app.goo.gl/ilJyRnwV5CDTtE5X2
04:23 PM roycroft: i would so like a mag drill and a nice set of annular cutters
04:23 PM roycroft: so many times it would have come in handy
04:23 PM cradek: those are sure nice
04:23 PM cradek: I rented one to drill holes in my bus's frame
04:23 PM roycroft: they are expensive though
04:24 PM roycroft: i don't have need for one often enough to cost justify getting it
04:24 PM cradek: I could carry it myself, but no way could I get it over my head and mounted on the frame myself
04:24 PM cradek: yeah it's definitely a thing to rent
04:26 PM andypugh: I bought one to drill two holes in my milling machine: https://photos.app.goo.gl/4WtoCkeQA0glhfqG2
04:26 PM andypugh: But I have always wanted one, so could justify the expense.
04:27 PM andypugh: I paid £106 for mine. Fractionally cheaper than a weekend hire: https://www.hss.com/hire/p/magnetic-broacher
07:50 PM enleth_ is now known as enleth
07:52 PM tumdedum_ is now known as tumdedum
08:00 PM enleth: have you seen/owned/used any realively cheap and currently commercially available drill bit sharpener that actually works well?
08:00 PM enleth: yes, I know, grinding by hand works well
08:02 PM enleth: but no, it doesn't when you want a whole bunch of people to keep the stock of drill bits sharp and some of them just don't have what it takes to grind at a proper angle, keep both sides ground to the same depth, etc.
08:03 PM enleth: *s/realively cheap/relatively cheap/

09:18 PM Tom_itx: do i have one?
09:18 PM Tom_itx: no
09:18 PM Tom_itx: do i recomend one?
09:18 PM Tom_itx: no
09:19 PM Tom_itx: drills are fairly cheap
09:19 PM Tom_itx: replace em
09:20 PM Tom_itx: or assign the best sharpener to the task
09:25 PM Tom_itx: http://www.darex.com/xt3000-drill-sharpener.html
09:25 PM Tom_itx: or get a good one
09:26 PM CaptHindsight: hey wait "this review brought to you by drill doctor"
09:26 PM CaptHindsight: oh there is one by Dremel at the end
