12:21 AM gloops: cool one this morning in england
12:24 AM fragalot: indeed
12:24 AM fragalot: winter has arrived.
12:24 AM gloops: winters last gasp probably, soon be into march
12:27 AM gloops: probably 75% of all 'news' here is related to brexit atm
12:27 AM roycroft: yeah, we're going to dip below freezing again here and there over the next few days
12:27 AM roycroft: winter waited until mid-february to arrive
12:27 AM roycroft: which really sucks
12:27 AM gloops: brexit, weather, then any day to day events that can be sensationalised
12:28 AM roycroft: the winter has been so mild that fruit trees started budding 20 days early
12:28 AM roycroft: and then it got cold
12:28 AM roycroft: orchardists are freaking out
12:28 AM fragalot: gloops: have they decided what direction to take yet with brexit?
12:28 AM gloops: there are now 1.6 cats for every household in the UK
12:29 AM roycroft: it's going to be brexit stage hard or brexit stage really hard
12:29 AM fragalot: roycroft: my garden does not like the current weather either
12:29 AM gloops: fragalot as far as i can see the government intend a fairly clean exit, there are some powerful forces that are trying to spoil that though
12:29 AM fragalot: everything started budding, some started flowreing, hell, even some of the berry bushes had berries!
12:30 AM roycroft: "clean" means "no treaties with the eu"
12:30 AM gloops: if the conservatives can cling to power for the remainder of brexit negotiations i think it will be a clean, full exit
12:30 AM roycroft: meaning the uk will be bound to eu tariffs
12:31 AM fragalot: gloops: I only have 3 real concerns though... continued hassle free travel for me to visit the wife's family & vice versa, her being able to continue to live abroad, and that I can continue to order cheap tools from axminster :P
12:31 AM gloops: yes, no point leaving at all if we're still bound by the EU
12:31 AM roycroft: and the eu says that under those conditions there would have to be a hard border in ireland
12:31 AM roycroft: which will piss off the irish to no end
12:31 AM roycroft: right, because your pm is incapable of negotiating a treaty properly
12:31 AM roycroft: so the only thing she would be able to do is cave 100% to the eu
12:32 AM roycroft: i'd say she has her head farther up her arse than any other world leader, but we have one here who beats her on that feat
12:32 AM fragalot: lol
12:32 AM gloops: shes not as useless as she looks roy, she has survived a lot in politics, she is however a behind the scenes leader, there hasnt been any bold rhetoric from her or anything like that
12:33 AM gloops: she wouldnt be my choice at all, but..she can do it probably
12:33 AM roycroft: well cameron was smart
12:33 AM roycroft: he won't be known as the pm who destroyed the uk
12:33 AM fragalot: yup
12:33 AM fragalot: "whoops this went wrong. Time to walk away"
12:33 AM gloops: he called the referendum haha
12:34 AM roycroft: he'll just be known as the pm who handed its destruction to his successor :)
12:34 AM gloops: there wont be any destruction, brexit is the dawning of a new 1000 year golden era for the UK
12:34 AM fragalot: maybe
12:34 AM roycroft: please do me a favor
12:34 AM gloops: its germany i feel sorry for
12:34 AM roycroft: and do not drink any of that kool-aid while you are operating heavy machinery, gloops
12:34 AM fragalot: could also be a 10 year internal conflict with scotland & ireland
12:35 AM fragalot: I'm just really curious what this mess will turn out to be in the en
12:35 AM fragalot: whether anything will /actually/ change
12:35 AM roycroft: i feel badly for the uk
12:35 AM roycroft: but we have enough problems here that i can't focus on their problems too much
12:37 AM gloops: for the first time since the 60s, manufacturing propped up the economy last year
12:37 AM fragalot: gloops: that's the case everywhere though in western countries
12:38 AM fragalot: a ton of companies are pulling out of china, to replace that with western 'lights off' factories
12:38 AM fragalot: more automation, higher production rates, higher quality
12:38 AM gloops: brexit is not just about leaving the eu, its about re-setting the economic base and climate of the UK
12:38 AM gloops: fragalot the boom coincides with low pound here, already we reap the benefits
12:39 AM gloops: we will soon lower business taxes and dump mountains of regulation
12:39 AM fragalot: sure, but it's not just the UK, I see it at work too
12:39 AM fragalot: everywhere in europe is currently booming, factories are investing a lot.
12:40 AM fragalot: actually i doubt you will drop any regulation worth dropping
12:40 AM fragalot: it will still need to meet CE to export to europe, and UL for usa, and that other one for canada
12:41 AM fragalot: and for local machinery you'll still need to either invent a standard, or use an existing one
12:41 AM gloops: lol, you watch them, any tory government post brexit will hammer regulation
12:41 AM fragalot: if machine building regulations change a lot in the next 5 years I will eat my shoe.
12:41 AM gloops: china ships to europe
12:42 AM fragalot: sure, but even they adhere to CE standards for their machines
12:42 AM fragalot: granted, it barely meets the specs, but it does
12:42 AM justan0theruser is now known as justanotheruser
12:45 AM fragalot: the CE regulations for machinery really aren't anything impossible, it all boils down to basic safety for the operator
12:45 AM fragalot: without compromising usability
12:45 AM gloops: probably not going to see basic safety undermined, we had plenty of that before the EU
12:45 AM fragalot: so what's the difference going to be then?
12:45 AM fragalot: because that's all CE is.
12:45 AM fragalot: a uniform standard for machine safety
12:45 AM gloops: CE isnt the regulation that causes all the problems
12:45 AM fragalot: which one is it?
12:45 AM gloops: mountains of BS to get rid of
12:45 AM fragalot: which mountains? I'm genuinely interested
12:45 AM gloops: we have seen endless programmes here showing small/medium businessmen detailing the crap they have to fill in and comply with, that comes from europe
12:46 AM gloops: ideas and entrepreneurship stifled
12:46 AM gloops: trade hampered, mountains of red tape
12:46 AM fragalot: I saw those too, half of the things they mentioned were for ISO9001 which was implemented poorly
12:46 AM IchGucksLive: morning from sibiria
12:46 AM fragalot: haha hey IchGucksLive
12:46 AM IchGucksLive: -14degC
12:47 AM IchGucksLive: 7F
12:47 AM gloops: yes im thinking of putting on an extra vest today
12:47 AM fragalot: gloops: but yes, there is a lot of red tape; but I don't know if that red tape will disappear
12:47 AM IchGucksLive: gloops: lots of snoe sara jane mee says
12:48 AM fragalot: it may receive an update, it may get worse, or it may get better... it all depends
12:48 AM IchGucksLive: last day of freeze summer around says weather lady
12:48 AM gloops: fragalot the vision held by many here for the UK, is a business/industry utopia
12:48 AM gloops: low tax, low regulation
12:49 AM IchGucksLive: CNC stuff is selling like greacy
12:49 AM IchGucksLive: 1week 200 steppers 4Nm
12:49 AM fragalot: gloops: of course, i'm just curious how they'll do the low regulation part efficiently without being detrimental to either a global market, or safety
12:49 AM IchGucksLive: all DM556 slod out at RATT
12:49 AM fragalot: i'm all for simplifying rules without making things worse
12:49 AM fragalot: IchGucksLive: is it because you bought them all? :D
12:49 AM IchGucksLive: how in this world is building so many cnc stuff
12:50 AM IchGucksLive: not one this week
12:50 AM IchGucksLive: even last week
12:50 AM gloops: the theory is to back off social and political intereference, once you create a thriving economy, everything else just falls into place
12:50 AM roycroft: after a hard brexit the uk will go into recession that will make the past 10 years of austerity look like a picnic
12:51 AM gloops: that might be possible roy, highly unlikely though, and tbh, the majority just dont care if it does happen
12:51 AM roycroft: you mean the loud people
12:51 AM roycroft: not the majority
12:51 AM fragalot: big difference
12:51 AM fragalot: the loud people voted for trump
12:51 AM fragalot: :D
12:51 AM gloops: the majority who voted for it
12:51 AM roycroft: you have your loud people pretending they are the majority just as we have the loud people who pretend they are the majority
12:51 AM roycroft: a large number of whom know they were tricked and regret the vote
12:52 AM gloops: well this week the labour party indicated the intention of staying in a customs union - the polls show massive rejection of that idea from labour voters
12:52 AM fragalot: I don't like polls
12:52 AM gloops: we would rather be independent and take our chances
12:53 AM fragalot: "we asked 10 people, and 8 of these hand picked people said X"
12:53 AM roycroft: you're screwed no matter what
12:53 AM gloops: the polls accross all the news stations and pollsters are pretty conclusive
12:53 AM roycroft: join the club
12:54 AM gloops: most people are complaining that we arent out yet
12:54 AM gloops: the question of soft or hard brexit is dead
12:54 AM roycroft: yes
12:54 AM roycroft: it's hard or really hard
12:54 AM roycroft: as i said earlier
12:54 AM gloops: its brexit
12:54 AM gloops: anything that isnt brexit, isnt brexit
12:54 AM gloops: brexit = out
12:54 AM fragalot: when is that impossible deadline again?
12:55 AM gloops: next march, 1 year
12:55 AM fragalot: k
12:56 AM IchGucksLive: off later !
12:56 AM fragalot: bye
04:13 AM XXCoder: gantra mill lol
04:33 AM Loetmichel: *gnhihi* target3001 Isolation milling assistant wants mm/sec. LinuxCNC wants mm/min... that Gcode file was a BIT fast on the machine ;)
04:37 AM gloops: gantries are a pain in the a'' to build
04:38 AM Loetmichel: why? IMHO they are pretty easy
04:38 AM Loetmichel: even when made from marine plywood
04:48 AM gloops: plenty of alignment issues to deal with, dual motors, drive systems etc, id avoid them where possible
04:49 AM jthornton: morning
04:50 AM XXCoder: yo
04:53 AM XXCoder: yo
04:58 AM Loetmichel: gloops: dual motors on y is easy
04:58 AM Loetmichel: just put a sync belt (timing belt) on the other side of the ballscrews
04:58 AM Loetmichel: to have them alinged for good
05:11 AM gloops: well all that introduces potential problems, we use ballscrews for accuracy, then throw in a couple of metres of belt? belt tension is an issue that will need watching etc, pulleys slip
05:12 AM gloops: basically a gantry creates a host of problems to overcome, not saying those problems cant be overcome, but it is extra work and places reliability in questions
05:12 AM gloops: question
05:14 AM Loetmichel: gloops: moving gantry routers/mills are usually built because its the smallest footprint for a given work area
05:15 AM gloops: yes thats probably the mean reason, if the footprint isnt an issue, id consider different designs myself
05:15 AM gloops: a gantry is not an ideal way to move things around
05:17 AM enleth: speaking of alternatives to a gantry - a couple days ago NYC CNC posted a shop tour that included going "inside" a DMF 260-11 5 axis mill that has a very interesting cantilevered Y axis design, honestly I have no idea how they managed to make it work correctly without sagging when fully extended
05:18 AM enleth: the machine is more or less a gantry mill with one side of the gantry removed
05:18 AM enleth: https://en.dmgmori.com/resource/blob/21750/5ac9b74da1bf7099bd4a3214a5ff3098/dmf-260-11-linear-highlight-picture-2-data.jpg
05:19 AM XXCoder: one of more unusual machines at work is that hated okuma. it has table movement only for X, and spindle has Z and Y
05:19 AM enleth: https://youtu.be/oTz2P5RaoDk?t=17m55s
05:19 AM gloops: the post is fixed though, you can build that as rigid as you like
05:19 AM enleth: XXCoder: sounds like that DMF
05:19 AM enleth: gloops: no, it moves on rails
05:19 AM XXCoder: hardware is pretty good, its firmware is what sucks
05:19 AM enleth: gloops: the table is completely stationary
05:20 AM enleth: the first YT link I posted is this machine moving
05:20 AM enleth: https://youtu.be/oTz2P5RaoDk?t=31m23s here's the inside
05:20 AM enleth: this is literally a half-gantry
05:20 AM gloops: thats basically the plan i have for my next build, only a lathe type though, so a couple hundred mill travel
05:21 AM gloops: in theory you can safely extend on rails so long as the distance between the mountings is equal or more to the travel
05:22 AM gloops: i.e 500mm travel, 500mm footprint
05:22 AM enleth: I'd expect that machine to have some kind of counterweight that extends backwards when the head reaches forwards, but there doesn't seem to be one
05:22 AM gloops: as you do on the z axis
05:23 AM gloops: it cant move without ripping the bearings apart
05:23 AM gloops: it will place massive stress on the supporting frame though
05:23 AM enleth: oh, and it uses HIWIN-style linear rails on a concrete base
05:24 AM enleth: there doesn't seem to be much cast iron in that machine
05:24 AM Loetmichel: gloops: 500mm travel= 500mm footprint ist REALLY true for a moving gantry though. you have to add the widht of the axis sled at least
05:25 AM Loetmichel: ie: my 1500*1050mm gantry mill had about 1700mm*1200mm footprint
05:25 AM Loetmichel: http://www.cyrom.org/palbum/main.php?g2_itemId=4935&g2_imageViewsIndex=1 <- that one
05:26 AM gloops: if you think of the z axis on a two beam gantry, the z drops 150mm, you should have your beams and rails spaced 150mm = that is balanced application of the leverage
05:26 AM gloops: i mean the footprint for the bearing blocks
05:39 AM Tom_itx: enleth, that looks like stuart's old cincinatti
05:41 AM Tom_itx: only his Z isn't on box rails
05:43 AM sync: enleth: the answer most probably is, they compensate the sag in the control
05:45 AM enleth: sync: certainly possible
05:45 AM enleth: either modeled, or measured with strain gauges
05:45 AM enleth: or both
05:46 AM enleth: and I bet a lot of design work went into modeling resonance and avoiding it
05:46 AM sync: probably just measured
05:47 AM enleth: that machine seems to be mostly steel
06:06 AM Loetmichel: the PSU brick for my 27" TFT here is funny... every time the coworker sits down or gets up across the desk it "reboots" (you can see the power led in the brick go off and back on for a split second)... it seems to be a BIT sensitive to ESD... maybe thats the reason it was on the "defect" pile ;)
06:06 AM Tom_itx: http://www.usedcnc.com/catalog/cincinnati-20v-80-cnc-5-axis-vertical-machining-center-1130/
06:07 AM Tom_itx: stuff that in your garage
06:08 AM XXCoder: ask Doctor who for interior placement and room advice an contract
06:59 AM Loetmichel: *hihihi* "iceberg ahead!" Someone at the company forgot to close the inside cutoff and drain the water tap outside... -> http://www.cyrom.org/palbum/main.php?g2_itemId=17001&g2_imageViewsIndex=1
08:34 AM gloops: wow, this is one of those 'the day Reginald did it' days lol
08:34 AM gloops: although i doubt any non brits would know who reginald was
08:35 AM gloops: having cured the washer motor with new bushes, a new problem developed - not emptying at all
08:35 AM gloops: had it to bits more than 10 times, finally found what id done wrong, its working fab
08:37 AM Rab: ? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reginald_Molehusband
08:37 AM gloops: also, despite pooh pooh'ing the weather forecasts, it is looking fairly siberian outside here atm, total whiteout
08:37 AM gloops: WOW amazed you found that Rab lol
08:37 AM Rab: Non-brit, can confirm I was unaware of this...bit of culture
08:38 AM gloops: yeah it was an old public information film to do with correct parking, the term 'the day reginald did it' crept into the common language for a while
08:40 AM sync: clunk click every trip!
08:41 AM gloops: i think the film of the original ad is lost, the audio is on youtube
08:42 AM gregcnc: that's just normal parking in chicago.
08:46 AM gloops: well, the washer pump, if you remove the impeller, theres a rubber 0 ring on the end that pulls off its seat when you pull the shaft out, i hadnt noticed the o ring at all up to now, just spotted it dangling on the shaft, re-seated it, the impeller pushes back in with a nice firm snap, - tried it, pump working perfect
09:28 AM JT-Shop: nice
09:44 AM gregcnc: JT-shop how do you like opencart?
09:52 AM JT-Shop: gregcnc: I like it except for one thing, I've never found a way to sell a kit that pulls from parts inventory... cubecart has an add on that supposed to do that testing it
09:53 AM gregcnc: how does shipping work?
09:55 AM JT-Shop: works fine, I use ups and usps
09:56 AM gregcnc: is it integrated or do you have to get addons?
10:03 AM JT-Shop: a bunch of shipping and pay options are standard
10:03 AM gregcnc: ok i didn't get that from the site, thanks
10:27 AM andypugh_ is now known as andypugh
10:56 AM McBride36 is now known as Guest70522
11:09 AM Loetmichel: ah, btw: coworker has done 4 iterations of the PCB design today. including 4 times PCB milling... now he got it all to fit, all buttons and mounting holes at the right place. So he proudly mounted the PCB into our Display frame, tries to close the monitor: doesent work because HP (where we get the Panels and electronics) has decided to put a different panel in the E241i which has a larger
11:09 AM Loetmichel: lower frame. Collides for about 3mm with the menu button pcb he designed :-( (i HATE it when the manufacturers change the innards of a device without changing the model number)
11:31 AM IchGucksLive: hi
11:31 AM fragalot: hey
11:35 AM JT-Shop: hay
11:36 AM FAalbers: hey
11:36 AM fragalot: straw
12:27 PM Tom_itx: fodder
12:32 PM Jymmm: fooder
12:32 PM fragalot: guy fiery
12:32 PM Tom_itx: well now that we've taken roll call
12:33 PM gregcnc: i wonder if this thing works https://www.ebay.com/itm/142696037409
12:33 PM fragalot: don't see why not
12:33 PM fragalot: whether it works well is a different question
12:34 PM Tom_itx: might chatter
12:34 PM Tom_itx: get one and let us know
12:34 PM gregcnc: won't fit my lathe
12:34 PM Tom_itx: why do you care then?
12:35 PM gregcnc: looks ridiculous never seen something like that by the big names
12:35 PM fragalot: make it fit :P
12:35 PM fragalot: gregcnc: I'm sure they must exist?
12:35 PM gregcnc: no clearance to the bed
12:36 PM Tom_itx: i'd probaby use a shorter cutoff for the first half then switch to that for the final few feet
12:36 PM gloops: would help avoid tool flexing
12:36 PM gloops: grind it down to fit
12:36 PM gregcnc: might work for parting butter
12:37 PM fragalot: Tom_itx: that's what I do on mine, except I use HSS bladezs and just inch the blade forward in the holder. :P
12:38 PM Tom_itx: yeah that's all i have is hss knives
12:38 PM gloops: well you can only cut to the depth of the narrow section, the thicker part of the shaft is in the tool holder - with a straight piece of hss that half of the cutter is solid in the tool holder anyway
12:45 PM gloops: maplin uk goes into receivership - no surprise there £30 for a usb cable
12:45 PM fragalot: for a cheap chinese usb cable*
12:46 PM JT-Shop: looks like rain all day again
12:46 PM gloops: and of course - blaming brexit lol
12:46 PM fragalot: gloops: it's just as good of an excuse as fake news.
12:46 PM fragalot: :D
12:46 PM gloops: toys r us also gone
12:46 PM roycroft: sadly, our toys r us did not close
12:47 PM roycroft: i was hoping it would, along with all the others that closed across the us
12:47 PM Jymmm: composting toilets https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s9gH9XAEtLU
12:47 PM roycroft: i have nothing personal against toys r us
12:47 PM roycroft: but the local store is right by some other stores that i semi-frequent
12:47 PM gloops: uk toys r us begged usa parent to bail out - didnt happen
12:47 PM roycroft: and toys r us drivers are insane
12:47 PM roycroft: gloops: half the us stores closed recently
12:48 PM roycroft: the usa parent do not have the money to bail out the uk stores
12:48 PM roycroft: toys r us have become broke r us
12:48 PM gloops: strange thing, all the retail went to out of town retail parks, seems that is now not so popular with consumers, they cant be bothered to drive so shop online - and save money
12:49 PM roycroft: our local sears store just closed as well
12:49 PM roycroft: i cancelled my sears credit card last week
12:49 PM roycroft: the end of an era
12:49 PM roycroft: i'm actually surprised that sears hung on for so long
12:52 PM gloops: jamie oliver also closed all his uk restaurants - lost 75 million £s last year
12:52 PM Rab: They're essentially a real estate holding company.
12:52 PM roycroft: he needs to get back to naked chef'ing
12:52 PM gloops: blamed brexit but his former customers were quick to point out it was his sky high prices and shit service that drove people away lol
12:52 PM roycroft: since he's lost his shirt i suppose he has
12:53 PM gloops: he is re-launching in europe
12:53 PM JT-Shop: high prices and poor service might as well lock the door
12:55 PM gloops: mainly relying on his celebrity status to draw in the crowds to pay top money for mediochre stuff
12:55 PM gloops: you might get them once, or twice
12:55 PM roycroft: i think he's a brilliant chef
12:55 PM roycroft: very innovative
12:55 PM roycroft: and his tv shows have brought high quality cooking to the masses
12:55 PM gloops: yeah, he doesnt cook your meal though
12:56 PM roycroft: but none of that translates into being a successful restaurant operator
01:09 PM phipli: Somehow, unlike everywhere else, we don't have a huge amount of snow
01:09 PM phipli: just a little
01:09 PM phipli: but it doesn't half feel cold
01:09 PM gloops: getting pretty deep round here https://scontent.fman1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/28279159_842312855955828_3050698794082658557_n.jpg?oh=c499ce5956e3b199a18e8670be5937d5&oe=5AFF74FF
01:10 PM phipli: heh
01:10 PM phipli: If it gets much cooler, we'll have to put a jumper on
01:12 PM JT-Shop: raining here again :(
01:12 PM * Tom_L passes some sunshine over to JT-Shop
01:12 PM JT-Shop: we need to dry out real bad
01:13 PM Tom_L: we need rain pretty bad
01:13 PM Tom_L: wanna make a deal?
01:13 PM JT-Shop: too bad it won't flow uphill...
01:14 PM phipli: Our water can be rolled up hill at the moment
01:16 PM JT-Shop: is it happy fluffy snow?
01:16 PM roycroft: we've had more than our share of rain this winter
01:16 PM roycroft: but our snowpack is only about 35% of normal
01:16 PM roycroft: so we're going to be hurting this summer
01:17 PM gloops: Toyota to build new generation Auris model at Burnaston factory in Derbyshire. Engines to be sourced its north Wales facility. 3,000 jobs across the two sites.
01:34 PM firephoto_ is now known as firephoto
01:45 PM JT-Shop: gotta love linux, debian 9 uses a different database that mysql and trying to install phpmyadmin it crashed lol
01:53 PM roycroft: yes, phpmyadmin doesn't work well on debian 9
01:53 PM roycroft: my boss is using adminer now
01:53 PM roycroft: you can install it with apt
01:53 PM roycroft: i use the mysql command line, myself
01:54 PM roycroft: rather, the mariadb command line these days
01:54 PM roycroft: or psql, to interface with postgresql databases
01:57 PM synfinatic_ is now known as synfinatic
02:00 PM andypugh: I was in Tignes last week, the snow there is walls 8’ tall each side of the road.
02:00 PM andypugh: Before that I was in Finland at -30
02:01 PM andypugh: So the panic and trouble caused by literlly centimetres of snow in the UK is embarassing
02:01 PM andypugh: I rode my motorcycle to work today. OK, I admit I strongly regretted that decision.
02:02 PM gloops: i wouldnt go out on a bike in this lol
02:03 PM gloops: someone ran into me yesterday on a hill, i really thought i wasnt going to stop at the bottom, only when the front wheels got onto the main road at the bottom which had been gritted did i get any traction, - then bang
02:06 PM gloops: ford kuga meets old sprinter van - only one winner heh
02:07 PM andypugh: Did the Sprinter collapse into a pile of rust? They seem prone to that
02:07 PM andypugh: But I guess that all comes out of your insurance?
02:07 PM phipli: I cycle to work
02:08 PM gloops: nah, slight bow in the bumper, doors seemed slightly harder than normal to shut, i told him i didnt want to claim, his car - the front was cracked and creased
02:08 PM phipli: at one point I could feel my back wheel drifting sideways
02:08 PM phipli: but there isn't much snow about here
02:08 PM gloops: he said he wasnt bothered as only superficial, id be surprised if the metalwork behind the plastic was not bent
02:09 PM gloops: andypugh, not my fault, he ran into me, we looked at the road it was shocking, 20mm of ice down the last 10 yards of the hill or so
02:11 PM gloops: i came off a bike on a roundabout once, with wife on back, diesel spill, hit the road and instinctively looked back - tipper lorry piling round towards us, he stopped, very lucky that day
02:19 PM JT-Shop: I used to ride my Honda 50 super sport all winter in Alaska
02:21 PM gloops: you dont think about it when youre 20, i tend to avoid taking risks on the road these days though
02:22 PM JT-Shop: drat I tossed out some RJ11 stuff the other day and now I need a RJ11 cable
02:22 PM Deejay_ is now known as Deejay
02:22 PM JT-Shop: I was 14 or so... put knobby tires on the front and back with some screws for studs sticking out
02:23 PM phipli: I've been trying to work out is it better to cycle (pushbike) at a higher speed to take advantage of gyroscopic effect
02:23 PM phipli: or to crawl along slowly so I can react and avoid every dangerous, slippery bit of road surface
02:24 PM phipli: *pathsurface
02:24 PM phipli: I'm currently testing - fast in straight lines, then very carefully change direction for corners
02:25 PM gloops: yes id stick with that lol
02:25 PM JT-Shop: pushbike?
02:25 PM phipli: gloops, translation help?
02:25 PM phipli: JT-Shop, peddle bike?
02:25 PM phipli: no engine
02:25 PM JT-Shop: ah ok
02:25 PM phipli: bicycle - probably the sensible (proper) term
02:26 PM gloops: well, fast in straight lines - fine so long as drive forces dont cause the back wheel to lose traction, so reasonable accleration
02:26 PM gloops: and also all depends whether you hit some obstacle that forces the front wheel off track
02:27 PM phipli: that last one is the worry
02:27 PM JT-Shop: my wife doesn't understand controlled acceleration on snow
02:27 PM phipli: limiting tractive forces is easy enough
02:27 PM phipli: but surprise rough lumps of ice...
02:28 PM phipli: yesterday I "discovered" a large sheet of ice
02:28 PM gloops: old bloke next door to us had a three wheeler, once in the snow, he indicated to turn right at traffic lights, but the front wheel got stuck in a rut when he set off and he went straight forward lol
02:28 PM phipli: just put my feet down and slid over it (no brakes, no peddles)
02:28 PM phipli: JT-Shop, or she is having fun and doesn't want to stop?
02:29 PM gloops: phipli one of those moments when totally sub-concious body movements take over
02:29 PM phipli: yeah - gloops, best one this year - before christmas my bike vanished from under me
02:30 PM phipli: I ended up hopping three times down the path and then stood there looking around for where my bike had gone
02:30 PM phipli: "well... that could have gone worse"
02:30 PM gloops: amazing what reflexes humans have
02:31 PM phipli: especially considering it was first thing in the morning :)
02:31 PM phipli: not my best time of the day :)
02:31 PM gloops: me neither
02:31 PM phipli: hum. the missus is up leeds / york way
02:32 PM phipli: hope she gets back tomorrow as planned
02:32 PM phipli: they've updated the forecast to be a lot more snow here tonight
02:32 PM phipli: previously it was just Friday we had to worry about
02:32 PM gloops: should be ok by tommorrow, some traffic will have churned it up, daughter is in york, the snow looked pretty deep there
02:33 PM phipli: yeah 3" or so by the look of the photos
02:33 PM gloops: got a lorry driver on my facebook though, hes posted some pretty dire scenes on the roads, lorrys jack-knifed, cars in ditches etc
02:33 PM JT-Shop: phipli: where we live you have to go up one of two hills to get out of the woods and she just doesn't know how to have a light pedal going up the slippery hill
02:34 PM phipli: JT-Shop, blank off first gear
02:34 PM phipli: or put some slack in the throttle cable...
02:34 PM JT-Shop: vari speed transmission Honda Civic Hybrid
02:35 PM JT-Shop: the problem is in her foot lol
02:35 PM phipli: a CVT?
02:35 PM phipli: ah no
02:35 PM phipli: Hybrid
02:35 PM phipli: CVTs are cool
02:35 PM phipli: and would be great in snow
02:36 PM JT-Shop: I can go up the steep one with no problem in my pos chevy van but I send her out the other way lol
02:36 PM phipli: she could borrow the bulldozer?
02:37 PM phipli: that would get out :)
02:37 PM fragalot: UK is getting a pounding.. https://www.buienradar.be/wereldwijd/europa/7daagse/neerslag
02:38 PM phipli: just had a look outside
02:38 PM gloops: its nothing really, the problem is most of our roads dont get gritted anymore
02:38 PM phipli: its snowing cats and dogs
02:38 PM phipli: inch down since I last looked outside (from almost nothing)
02:39 PM gloops: snow is more of an irritation for most things, providing the roads are kept clear
02:39 PM phipli: Never gets really cold here (although it feels it right now)
02:39 PM JT-Shop: that would be rough ride to work for sure lol
02:39 PM fragalot: gloops: even if they were gritted, people suddenly forget how to drive the minute the first snowflake hits the road
02:39 PM phipli: but we don't have the hardware for dealing with it because it only happens every now and then
02:40 PM JT-Shop: when the cleats are in sync it's not to bad but turn a tiny bit and it's rock and roll time lol
02:40 PM gloops: when i was a kid the council used to send pick ups out with a couple of blokes on the back with shovels, slinging grit all over the back streets
02:40 PM phipli: My grandad used to clear the lanes where he lived for everyone
02:41 PM phipli: when it snowed badly in the... 50s?
02:41 PM phipli: he made a home made plough for the tractor
02:41 PM phipli: because they got snowed in
02:41 PM phipli: and had it for years afterwards
02:41 PM gloops: yeah there was a stint of really bad winters around then, 50s
02:41 PM phipli: and the winter of 81/82
02:41 PM phipli: when my brother was born
02:42 PM gloops: that rings a bell, i seem to remember a huge drift in the garden
02:42 PM phipli: there is a photo of my mum stood where the snow plough cut through with the snow on each side taller than her head
02:43 PM lunadabay_ is now known as lunadabay
02:45 PM gloops: we had some decent snow maybe 6 years ago, cant remember exactly, there was about 8 inch for a couple of weeks
02:45 PM gloops: maybe deeper
02:46 PM fragalot: I remember that
02:46 PM phipli: I don't think I've seen more than 3 or 4 inches since I was a kid
02:46 PM fragalot: I was stuck in the eurotunnel when that happened
02:47 PM phipli: will have been about 8 years ago
02:47 PM fragalot: after which I took a train to the ferry in the netherlands & booked a ticket online
02:47 PM fragalot: arrived in the departure hall
02:47 PM phipli: because it was the first winter I had at my current work
02:47 PM fragalot: "sorry sir your ticket is for tomorrow, not today"
02:47 PM phipli: did you ask them very nicely?
02:48 PM fragalot: I did, and they put me on the standby list
02:48 PM fragalot: someone didn't make it so I got their spot
02:48 PM phipli: :)
02:48 PM fragalot: so what was supposed to take 2hrs to get to the UK turned out to be 2 days, lol
02:49 PM fragalot: (before the ferry in the netherlands I showed up at calais & was told they weren't running in that weather)
02:49 PM fragalot: planes were grounded too
02:50 PM fragalot: I really couldn't have picked a worse day I think, haha
02:50 PM phipli: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/8428097.stm
02:50 PM phipli: that made me lol at the time
02:51 PM phipli: to be fair - all the trains were cancelled where it was because the regular ones were electric and struggling to get power from the third rail (stupid design)
02:51 PM phipli: and that thing is huge, heavy and self propelled
02:51 PM phipli: so yes, it was the only thing running
02:51 PM gloops: i remember it because of a situation on a hill with a boy racer, long story, but i got past him, he couldnt get up the hill, long way from anywhere, i instructed him and pushed him at least 10 times till my lungs were raw and bursting, in the end i drove off and left him lol, as it was getting dark, no idea what happened to him
02:51 PM roycroft: just wait a few tens of thousands of years and you'll be able to walk from the netherlands to the uk again
02:52 PM fragalot: phipli: what about the diesels that you seem to love in the UK?
02:52 PM phipli: it was down south
02:53 PM phipli: they're rich down there and so have modern trains
02:53 PM phipli: not like us stone age people up here
02:53 PM fragalot: ah right :D
02:53 PM XXCoder: trains with solid gold poop thrones eh ;)
02:53 PM phipli: our trains do better in the snow - except when they preemptively cancel them
02:54 PM phipli: (the do it to make it easier to manage the situation - there is almost no slack in the timetable so a single issue causes huge knock on impacts)
02:54 PM fragalot: the trains we have here are a bit /too/ powerful
02:54 PM phipli: what sort of thing have you got?
02:54 PM fragalot: my dad's pulled one in half before (used to be a test driver)
02:54 PM Tom_itx: softjaw program verified, knockin out some softjaws to day
02:54 PM fragalot: turns out when you couple 2 together and get 16MW of pulling force, you really do have to flick the "tone it down, lad" switch
02:54 PM fragalot: :D
02:54 PM phipli: Diesel wise we peak out at ~3500hp
02:55 PM fragalot: phipli: overhead electrics
02:55 PM fragalot: these have 8000hp per loco
02:55 PM Tom_itx: strap that to a spindle
02:55 PM phipli: We have 6MW trains :)
02:55 PM phipli: if you're talking electric
02:55 PM fragalot: yup
02:56 PM fragalot: I meant to say 12 earlier, not 16
02:57 PM phipli: biggest loco I can think of is 5MW
02:57 PM phipli: and they work in pairs
02:57 PM phipli: but we don't have /really/ big trains here
02:57 PM phipli: can't get the long freight trains on the network
02:57 PM phipli: so no need for more power
02:58 PM phipli: not like South Africa / Australia / US
02:58 PM phipli: but sometimes our other offices ask for help so I get to work on projects relating to australian locos
02:59 PM fragalot: the most popular ones here are the HLE13, which have 5.2MW per loco & their often pair them up
02:59 PM fragalot: or the HLE18 & 19
02:59 PM fragalot: 6MW one
02:59 PM JT-Shop: phipli: do your birds like bananas?
03:00 PM phipli: I've not tried - we don't have any atm
03:02 PM JT-Shop: I only get 1/2 now, the pullets get the rest
03:03 PM phipli: :)
03:03 PM Tom_itx: so who's feeding who there?
03:03 PM phipli: ours smashed an egg this morning so I'm unimpressed with them at the moment
03:03 PM Tom_itx: banana flavored eggs...
03:03 PM Tom_itx: hmm
03:03 PM phipli: Tom_itx, sounds like Haribo
03:04 PM JT-Shop: they also like homestyle meatballs from the store which tasted like rubber to me so the pullets get them
03:05 PM phipli: have you given them any cheese?
03:08 PM Tom_itx is now known as Tom_L
03:10 PM JT-Shop: not yet
03:10 PM gloops: another fairly stunning design from the Yura whosisname bloke https://scontent.fman1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/28279269_10215664211868313_6609901325246824965_n.jpg?oh=e84ab5b4253a19b90111bad6e86e0e4e&oe=5B4B2340
03:11 PM gloops: 5 axis, or six maybe
03:11 PM phipli: heh : http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-scotland-43229762/uk-weather-deer-spotted-in-snowy-street
03:12 PM gloops: theyre very common now, more deer in the uk than there were in william the conquerors time
03:55 PM phipli: Tom_L, after not quite making it out of China before Chinese new year, my PCBs are in the country
04:02 PM Rab: phipli, when did you place your order?
04:03 PM phipli: 1st Feb?
04:03 PM Rab: ahh
04:04 PM phipli: it /almost/ made it out of china in time
04:04 PM phipli: it was so close
04:04 PM Rab: I put an order in Feb 7 (Feb 8 for china) and it's still "in production".
04:05 PM phipli: I have another order that went in on the 8th
04:05 PM phipli: Rab : Seeed fusion?
04:05 PM Rab: Which I guess is to be expected. The fab said orders after the 4th would be delayed.
04:05 PM Rab: phipli, Elecrow.
04:05 PM phipli: <nods>
04:20 PM phipli: heh
04:20 PM phipli: tomorrow is going to be interesting
04:21 PM phipli: a good 2.5 to 3 inches out there now
04:21 PM phipli: it is as light as anything
04:21 PM phipli: other than cold, you almost can't feel it when you pick it up
04:23 PM JT-Shop: Henry is starting to learn his position :)
04:25 PM phipli: behaving better?
04:26 PM JT-Shop: yes, when I approach his pen he turns to the side when I go in he moves to the back
04:27 PM phipli: can he see the girls where he is?
04:27 PM JT-Shop: a little yes
04:29 PM Deejay: gn8
04:31 PM phipli: I'm wondering how our grumpy chicken will treat me after I spent 5 days hand feeding it
04:31 PM phipli: (I've hardly been home during daylight since so haven't socialised with her :) )
04:32 PM JT-Shop: they don't seem to forget much they like
04:32 PM phipli: I do miss the chickens we lost in the past
04:32 PM phipli: one of them was a really good boss chicken
04:33 PM phipli: kept the others in line without being overly aggressive
04:33 PM JT-Shop: ours have worked out the pecking order and seldom have a squabble
04:34 PM phipli: It will be nice when we have more space one day and can get a few more
04:35 PM phipli: still really want an Orpington
04:35 PM JT-Shop: I was thinking of getting a few cinnamon queens
04:37 PM phipli: My chicken that looks like a Barred Rock but isn't spends her time pulling at my heart strings
04:38 PM phipli: every morning while the others fight over the feeder she runs up and stands or perches in front of me begging for treats
04:38 PM phipli: the little ball of fluff
04:38 PM phipli: he feathers are so much softer than the others
04:39 PM JT-Shop: do you put the feeder up at night?
04:40 PM phipli: The feeder is in the run, so they don't have access at night
04:41 PM JT-Shop: same here
04:48 PM DocHopper: phipli: Orpingtons are my favorite of the birds I've had, they're very docile and very dumb.
04:49 PM JT-Shop: my neighbor has some I think
04:49 PM JT-Shop: are they brown egg layers?
04:50 PM phipli: creamish
04:51 PM phipli: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DMMTMvp9Btg/UiI9rB4IJII/AAAAAAAAAk4/kT_7WBlDS-Q/s1600/First_egg_laid_20130824_006.JPG
04:51 PM phipli: darker egg is from a buff orpington
04:51 PM JT-Shop: ah she has buff orpingtons
04:51 PM phipli: We tried to get some, but there was a national shortage just as we did :(
04:52 PM phipli: due to the bird flu stuff
04:52 PM phipli: breeders had cut down on stock
04:53 PM JT-Shop: hmm says they are a bit broody
04:53 PM JT-Shop: https://www.cacklehatchery.com/buff-orpington.html
04:53 PM pcw_mesa: Thats been my experience with Buff Orpintons
04:54 PM phipli: only $2.67 if you buy 100 :)
04:55 PM phipli: pcw_mesa, how aggressive are they when they're broody?
04:55 PM phipli: I remember being pecked by broody chickens as a kid...
04:55 PM phipli: but our chickens were as big as an orpington :)
04:56 PM phipli: *weren't
04:56 PM pcw_mesa: Not very, they are some of the most docile chickens we have had
04:57 PM pcw_mesa: because of such bad predation last year we are down to just a couple "rat" chickens
04:57 PM DocHopper: phipli: I agree with pcw_mesa I only had 2 of 6 birds ever act broody, and all you had to do was pick them up and they didn't bother coming back.
04:58 PM DocHopper: Orpingtons, that is.
05:05 PM JT-Shop: I want to get a few of these https://www.cacklehatchery.com/cinnamon-queens.html
05:05 PM phipli: We have a WD40 dispenser filled with water hung next to the back door to discourage neighbourhood cats that are taking too much of an interest (through the wire)
05:05 PM JT-Shop: if I ever get the garden shed converted to a coop
05:05 PM phipli: other than that, so far fort clucks has defended them
05:06 PM phipli: JT-Shop, not met any of them before
05:06 PM phipli: is it an american breed?
05:08 PM JT-Shop: it's a combination of RIR male and RIW female
05:08 PM JT-Shop: The parent stock is made from a proprietary Cackle Hatchery® bloodline/strain of the Rhode Island Red male and the Rhode Island White female.
05:09 PM phipli: interesting
05:09 PM phipli: anyhow
05:09 PM phipli: I'm heading off
05:09 PM phipli: night folks
05:09 PM SpeedEvil: night
05:09 PM JT-Shop: night
05:09 PM phipli: lets see if I can leave the house tomorrow morning :)
05:16 PM L29Ah: how do i force linuxcnc to execute a line of g-code overriding the axis limit?
05:17 PM andypugh: You can’t
05:17 PM L29Ah: i need to go a very certain distance from the current point to be able to "home" w/o installed limit switches, and the manual control won't let me do that as it doesn't consume numbers
05:17 PM L29Ah: yet it overrides the limits
05:18 PM L29Ah: or, another way, can i set the g53 coordinate system offset?
05:18 PM JT-Shop: that is set when you home an axis
05:18 PM andypugh: Only by homing.
05:18 PM L29Ah: i can't "home" to anything except zero, can i?
05:19 PM andypugh: If you set the home search velocities to zero then the system will home G53 to the specifiec home positions for each axis at the position that it is in when home is pressed.
05:20 PM L29Ah: but i can't get into desired position as it won't allow me to move it beyond the current limits even though it's unhomed
05:20 PM L29Ah: as it thinks it's all zeroes after linuxcnc start even though this may not be the case after, say, a power cycle
05:21 PM andypugh: I am not sure what limits you are talking about.
05:21 PM L29Ah: do i have any other way to move for a certain amount of distance except dropping the limits from the .ini?
05:22 PM L29Ah: those set in .ini and enforced on g-code commands
05:23 PM andypugh: Is there a compelling reason not to add home switches?
05:24 PM L29Ah: everything works just well w/o them except the rare cases of unplanned shutdowns
05:33 PM JT-Shop: before homing you can jog to the moon if you like
05:38 PM L29Ah: i can't jog by a specific amount of distance
05:38 PM L29Ah: i can only press buttons and watch for the numbers
05:42 PM mozmck: L29Ah: put NO_FORCE_HOMING = 1 in the [TRAJ] section of your ini file.
05:43 PM L29Ah: it's there already
05:43 PM L29Ah: g-code interpreter doesn't compain about being unhomed, it complains about being asked to move over the limits
05:44 PM JT-Shop: sure you can just change the jog increment from continuous to some increment
05:44 PM JT-Shop: there are no limits when your not homed
05:45 PM mozmck: Oh, I see. Yeah, I'm not sure there is a real good solution to your problem except maybe to move to your "home" position before shutting down. Then on power up home to that position.
05:48 PM mozmck: JT-Shop: that's partly true. If you jog it will stop where it thinks the soft-limits are, but then you can let up and jog again and it will go past them - at least that's what I remember from my testing.
05:48 PM L29Ah: ok, jogging by increment did the trick, thanks
05:48 PM L29Ah: quite cumbersome tho
05:49 PM mozmck: L29Ah: I see you are talking about unplanned shutdowns, I think your best bet is home switches ;-)
05:49 PM JT-Shop: mozmck: if the axis is not homed there are no limits AFAIK
05:50 PM L29Ah: mozmck: yeah sure, i'll install these someday™
05:53 PM JT-Shop: https://imagebin.ca/v/3tJblidktdav
05:53 PM JT-Shop: you can see I've jogged a half a mile outside my "soft limits" when unhomed
05:58 PM gloops: i didnt have switches on the first machine i made, when i put them on the current one it quickly seemed like - why would not have home switches?
06:02 PM JT-Shop: ah well time to lock the pullets up and start some chow
11:33 PM Guest70522 is now known as McBride36
