12:51 AM fragalot: mornin' IchGucksLive
12:54 AM IchGucksLive: Morniung from Germany
12:54 AM IchGucksLive: today full workday in school
12:54 AM IchGucksLive: building mashines
12:54 AM fragalot: awesome
12:54 AM IchGucksLive: 36 meters of construction AL needs to be cut and milled
12:54 AM fragalot: outsource that to the kids :)
12:55 AM fragalot: actually, are there even any kids in school today in germany?
12:55 AM IchGucksLive: i dot 28students with me
12:55 AM CaptHindsight: knockwurst day?
12:55 AM IchGucksLive: but only 4 mashines
12:55 AM fragalot: divide & conquer :D
12:56 AM IchGucksLive: i thik we go for a quite easy day as 5 of the 28 got a more Pro expirience
12:56 AM fragalot: public service announcement: if you google "germany school wednesdayé you get so many reports of false gunman alarms >.<
12:57 AM IchGucksLive: so 1on5 team
12:57 AM fragalot: Neat
12:57 AM IchGucksLive: about 7 weapon alarms in US a week iin schools is quite alot
12:58 AM fragalot: even one a year is a lot
01:00 AM CaptHindsight: keep em scared, keep em down, keep em dumb
01:00 AM IchGucksLive: i gues now as the Students them self are going to go for it it will spread the anger to the public and this can be dangerous for the Govermaent
01:00 AM IchGucksLive: seen all over the world
01:01 AM CaptHindsight: nah, nothing will happen
01:01 AM IchGucksLive: it takes about 25years to clean up a Country
01:01 AM CaptHindsight: administrators will doable down on just suppressing them
01:01 AM IchGucksLive: in the US never takes place
01:01 AM CaptHindsight: doable/double
01:02 AM CaptHindsight: it's not by accident
01:02 AM CaptHindsight: this is the plan
01:02 AM IchGucksLive: agree OFF to school bye
01:02 AM CaptHindsight: keep them feeling powerless and scared
01:03 AM fragalot: fear always works
01:05 AM CaptHindsight: but you can't talk about it like this here
01:05 AM CaptHindsight: school has special rules like religion
01:06 AM CaptHindsight: you leave rationality at the door
01:06 AM fragalot: religion is a great example of "lead by fear"
01:07 AM CaptHindsight: it will go on your permanent record :)
01:07 AM fragalot: meh, those aren't nearly as important in europe as they are in the US
01:08 AM fragalot: permanent records in schools just get archived into the abyss when you graduate
01:08 AM CaptHindsight: you aren't allowed to point out the double standards either
01:08 AM * fragalot would be a terrible american xd
01:08 AM fragalot: xD
01:09 AM fragalot: speaking of being terrible and controlled by fear; I need to get to work and fix that damn USB stack i've been fighting >.<
01:09 AM CaptHindsight: DHS will go back 10 years into any public records, even if you got into some school trouble at 15
01:09 AM fragalot: background checks aren't a thing here
01:10 AM CaptHindsight: you could be 25 with a PhD and be turned down for trouble at 15
01:10 AM fragalot: but you can get - and you must do this yourself - a certificate of "good behavior" from the town hall if you want to join a gun club or similar
01:11 AM CaptHindsight: what disqualifies you? How many wives, children, hookers etc can you beat?
01:11 AM fragalot: basically anything over a parking ticket I think
01:12 AM fragalot: convicted crimes
01:12 AM fragalot: anyway - back in about 45mins
01:12 AM CaptHindsight: hasta
01:13 AM ves: real pain overiding run-in-place=yes
02:03 AM Deejay: moin
02:05 AM gloops: Sy Yon
02:05 AM gloops: Group Moderator
02:05 AM gloops: Mach products are pretty much plug N play, where as the linux, just sits on a hard drive, waiting for the migraine numbing oxycodone to kick in..
02:18 AM MarcelineVQ: when you have complete control over how your system does things a headache or two is a fair trade.
02:20 AM gloops: well i think for a basic xyz machine, linuxcnc stepconfig is far easier than setting uo mach3
03:04 AM Tom_L: 19F
03:04 AM Deejay: utf8 fail detected
03:05 AM Deejay: dont like utf8, heh?
03:15 AM evilren: i dont even know what my shit is set to
03:15 AM evilren: everything is not that default
03:16 AM evilren: okay i put the utf8 happy?
03:16 AM Deejay: give me a degree sign and i can tell you if it is utf8 ;)
03:16 AM evilren: i am conforming
03:17 AM Deejay: from Tom_L, i only see a question mark
03:17 AM Deejay: every time. looks so broken
03:17 AM evilren: i get a funnt char and a deg
03:17 AM evilren: well prob not now
03:17 AM evilren: °
03:18 AM evilren: what do you see?
03:18 AM Deejay: funny char and a deg
03:18 AM Deejay: A with a hat
03:18 AM evilren: yeah thats what i saw w/ iso translation
03:18 AM Deejay: some kind of circumflex
03:18 AM Deejay: or what the frenchies call it
03:19 AM evilren: i dunno its not something on my keyboard so it doesnt matter because california uber alles
03:19 AM Deejay: °
03:19 AM Deejay: haha
03:19 AM evilren: i see a deg
03:19 AM Deejay: yeah, thats ut8f ;)
03:19 AM Deejay: should be a single deg. all ok
03:20 AM evilren: right i changed encoding, i think if i didnt when i pasted from before setting change you would have seen question marks
04:48 AM jthornton: morning
04:50 AM XXCoder: yo
04:51 AM jthornton: yikes flood watch the rest of the week
04:52 AM XXCoder: fun
04:54 AM jthornton: I have a couple of spots where the ground has not got real solid yet gotta watch them for washout
04:56 AM XXCoder: yeah
07:49 AM jthornton: starting out today with 3 medium eggs and one tiny yolkless egg
08:43 AM * JT-Shop just made a small levee in front of the path to the chicken yard... heavy rain expected
08:45 AM TurBoss: hello
08:45 AM TurBoss: I'm trying to add a python handler to a gladevcp spinbutton
08:46 AM TurBoss: Ive created the gtk signal but when I launch LCNC an error is shown
08:46 AM TurBoss: can't find the handler
09:09 AM JT-Shop: are you loading the file with the handler?
09:14 AM TurBoss: hello JT
09:16 AM TurBoss: I'm loading using this line in the ini
09:16 AM TurBoss: EMBED_TAB_COMMAND=halcmd loadusr -Wn gladevcp gladevcp -c gladevcp -x {XID} -u ./gladevcp.py ./gladevcp.glade
09:20 AM JT-Shop: just guessing here... is the handler in gladevcp.py?
09:22 AM TurBoss: JT-Shop: like this : http://dpaste.com/1AHDR59
09:23 AM JT-Shop: hmm looks ok to me
09:24 AM * JT-Shop has to get back to work
09:24 AM TurBoss: Ive created a sim config using stepconf
09:24 AM TurBoss: ok thanks :)
09:32 AM TurBoss: Hello Kfc
09:32 AM TurBoss: hazzy ^
09:32 AM TurBoss: KCJ
09:32 AM TurBoss: :P
09:32 AM hazzy: Hello!
09:33 AM TurBoss: whats up?¿
09:34 AM hazzy: I have been working on cars and trying to learn Fusion 360
09:34 AM TurBoss: I need some help
09:34 AM TurBoss: :D
09:34 AM TurBoss: i'm trying to pipe a gladevcp hal_spinbutton to a python script
09:34 AM TurBoss: ohhh
09:34 AM TurBoss: cool
09:34 AM hazzy: Ah
09:36 AM TurBoss: http://dpaste.com/1AHDR59 <-- got this
09:36 AM TurBoss: but receive this : /usr/bin/gladevcp:212: RuntimeWarning: missing handler 'on_window1_destroy'
09:36 AM TurBoss: builder.connect_signals(handlers)
09:37 AM TurBoss: replace on_window1_...
09:37 AM TurBoss: :P
09:39 AM hazzy: Hmm, what is window1? It must be the main app window, I guess, but why does it not find it
09:39 AM TurBoss: sorrty
09:39 AM TurBoss: copied the wrong line
09:40 AM TurBoss: but receive this : /usr/bin/gladevcp:212: RuntimeWarning: missing handler 'on_hal_spinbutton2_realize' builder.connect_signals(handlers)
09:41 AM hazzy: You may have to add the signals manually in glade
09:41 AM hazzy: Let me check
09:43 AM TurBoss: they are in place
09:43 AM TurBoss: change_value + realize
09:44 AM hazzy: Does the gladevcp panel show up at all?
09:45 AM hazzy: Maybe it is not using the right UI file
09:46 AM TurBoss: yes
09:46 AM TurBoss: it shows
09:46 AM TurBoss: its a tab
09:46 AM TurBoss: axis one
09:47 AM TurBoss: I'm using lcnc 2.7
09:47 AM TurBoss: .12
09:49 AM hazzy: It seems like it should work with what you have, but I am not very familiar with gladevcp
09:49 AM TurBoss: ok
09:49 AM TurBoss: thank you :)
09:50 AM hazzy: You are sure that the signals in glade exactly match the callback names in the python?
09:50 AM hazzy: Only thing I can think of :D
09:50 AM TurBoss: yes sure
09:50 AM TurBoss: maybe...
09:50 AM TurBoss: is another thing
09:50 AM TurBoss: Ive created a sim comfig using stepconf
09:51 AM TurBoss: but it complains about rt
09:51 AM TurBoss: bingo
09:51 AM TurBoss: gladevcp -u gladevcp.py gladevcp.glade doesn't work
09:52 AM TurBoss: my sim config is not so sim
09:53 AM TurBoss: do you know how can I create a minimal sim config?
09:55 AM TurBoss: ok just figured it
09:56 AM hazzy: I think the sim configs in hazzy are about as minimal as they can be, maybe steal one of those :)
09:56 AM hazzy: Did you get gladevcp to work?
09:56 AM TurBoss: oh sure
09:56 AM TurBoss: :D
09:57 AM TurBoss: ty
09:57 AM hazzy: Oh, wait you are using 2.7 though, and those are for 2.8 :(
09:58 AM TurBoss: not yet
09:58 AM TurBoss: :\
09:58 AM TurBoss: but thins are moving
09:58 AM TurBoss: *things
09:58 AM TurBoss: oh true
09:58 AM TurBoss: well I'll try to backport them
09:59 AM hazzy: All you should have to do is remove the joint stuff, and change the axis names in the HAL files
09:59 AM TurBoss: done
10:07 AM TurBoss: nope
10:07 AM TurBoss: fail
10:07 AM TurBoss: I'll just grab the axis example
10:12 AM JT-Shop: wow rain band from Texas to the great lakes and I'm on the dark blue part
10:13 AM jesseg: banned?
10:14 AM jesseg: I'm just trying to figure out what you mean
10:14 AM jesseg: I'm not from near Texas
10:14 AM JT-Shop: a line of rain from tx to gl
10:15 AM jesseg: Oh that kind of band, like a swath!
10:15 AM jesseg: You'll have to pardon me I'm slow this morning... perhaps on account of this awful headcold :P
10:16 AM hazzy: TurBoss: sorry about that, the axis ones should work
10:16 AM TurBoss: got the same error :(
10:17 AM TurBoss: I'll set up some old machine
10:17 AM TurBoss: thanks!!
10:17 AM hazzy: Of course!
10:17 AM hazzy: (But I did not help xD)
10:44 AM phipli: JT-Shop, the chicken is still under the weather, but I learnt something today - turns out chickens really like cheese!
10:45 AM phipli: She hasn't been eating properly so I basically went through the fridge looking for things to tempt her with after I ran out of grapes
10:49 AM JT-Shop: phipli: mine go nuts over bananas lol
10:49 AM JT-Shop: what do you think it wrong with her?
10:49 AM phipli: Have you tried carrot? Ours /hate/ carrot
10:50 AM phipli: her new feathers are coming through for the first time which is meant to be horrible
10:50 AM phipli: but she may have been eating loads of the old ones
10:50 AM phipli: and made her insides go funny
10:50 AM phipli: but, it is really hard to tell
10:50 AM JT-Shop: ah molting I here is painful
10:51 AM JT-Shop: be back in a bit lunch time here
10:51 AM phipli: sure thing
10:51 AM phipli: laters
11:05 AM jthornton: phipli: for the first time yesterday the average egg size moved from small to medium
11:27 AM Loetmichel: jthornton: i assume that means your chickens are well-fed?
11:33 AM phipli: For some reason we get quite a lot of big eggs - often struggle to shut the egg boxes
11:34 AM phipli: jthornton, https://gfycat.com/HastyEagerAdouri
11:34 AM phipli: (not my bird)
11:35 AM * JT-Shop waves from up here in the shop now
11:35 AM phipli: :)
11:35 AM phipli: far too mobile to keep track of
11:37 AM JT-Shop: one place or the other
11:37 AM JT-Shop: what's using a toothbrush on the comb for?
11:39 AM Rab: feels good man
11:39 AM MarcelineVQ: that's one happy looking chicken
11:41 AM Rab: I hope that's a soft toothbrush. I've heard that you're never supposed to touch a chicken's comb or wattles. But when I was a kid we'd mess with them constantly, and they never seemed worse for wear.
11:41 AM Rab: They would tear them to shreds fighting anyway.
11:42 AM phipli: Yeah JT-Shop because the chicken likes it. One of ours likes being scratched on the back of the head, the others don't let you near the back of their head
11:42 AM JT-Shop: dang roo will bite the comb... well not not anymore he is a bachelor now lol
11:42 AM phipli: Rab - never heard not to touch them
11:42 AM Rab: phipli, maybe it's only a concern for show chickens.
11:42 AM JT-Shop: yea I have one that likes to snuggle up to me and take a nap
11:44 AM phipli: :) it has been quite cold lately
11:44 AM Deejay: henry
11:45 AM phipli: I don't think he's logged in at the moment
11:46 AM phipli: probably too busy being angry
11:59 AM IchGucksLive: hi
11:59 AM fragalot: hi
11:59 AM IchGucksLive: fragalot: running out of screws stopt the atamt today
12:01 PM fragalot: >.< amateur!
12:01 PM fragalot: :D
12:02 PM IchGucksLive: agree
12:02 PM IchGucksLive: i orders 200screw per mashine
12:02 PM IchGucksLive: deliverd 100
12:02 PM fragalot: :/
12:02 PM IchGucksLive: slight low
12:03 PM IchGucksLive: i calculated on 45x45 Heavy
12:03 PM IchGucksLive: it is a hell of stabel and weight for this tiny mashine
12:03 PM fragalot: ho< tiny?
12:03 PM IchGucksLive: 40x40 light woudt also do the job
12:04 PM IchGucksLive: 1000x700x400 standard HI SET
12:05 PM IchGucksLive: on 28 People power includen 3 female students it went real quick all parts finish
12:05 PM fragalot: :)
12:05 PM IchGucksLive: even the Motor mounts
12:05 PM fragalot: is 40 light really stiff enough for a machine that size?
12:05 PM IchGucksLive: as someone managed to get plasma in school going ;-)
12:06 PM IchGucksLive: fragalot: caslculation says no
12:06 PM IchGucksLive: but real mount says ofcause
12:06 PM fragalot: lol
12:06 PM IchGucksLive: i will check the mahine for light steel mill
12:07 PM IchGucksLive: 45 heavy ofcause
12:07 PM IchGucksLive: 15mmx0,2
12:07 PM fragalot: if it can do mild steel i'm interested in the design too, :P
12:07 PM IchGucksLive: and 10x0,2 full
12:07 PM fragalot: I still haven't started on the actual mechanical construction of mine, so that whole design is still wide open
12:07 PM IchGucksLive: its the online design
12:08 PM IchGucksLive: yours is the heviest ive seen so far
12:08 PM IchGucksLive: it might take a 10x2mm force
12:08 PM IchGucksLive: at 60mm/min
12:08 PM fragalot: i'm hoping so
12:09 PM fragalot: I'm planning to start working on the molds & order the epoxy next month to cast the bottom half of the base
12:10 PM fragalot: and ask around for cast iron to insert into the mold where needed, as I still haven't found anywhere that wants to sell to me
12:10 PM IchGucksLive: 3mashines in 10hr woudt be my personal record
12:10 PM fragalot: fully finished?
12:10 PM IchGucksLive: no mechanics
12:10 PM fragalot: was going to say, haha
12:10 PM IchGucksLive: excluding chain
12:11 PM fragalot: still is a pretty good rate to be building frames at
12:11 PM IchGucksLive: its realy fast with the edge blocks
12:11 PM IchGucksLive: but it needs alor of screws
12:12 PM IchGucksLive: Guten Abend Abrafax
12:14 PM gloops: any particular reason you want cast iron fragalot? because its easier to scrape?
12:14 PM IchGucksLive: fragalot: i got a horizontal to mill hiwin ground and a H7 20x870
12:14 PM fragalot: https://imgur.com/gallery/74Ywy <- ha. :D
12:14 PM fragalot: IchGucksLive: I know some of those words?
12:14 PM fragalot: H7 20x870 = ?
12:15 PM IchGucksLive: Diskbit Calibrated
12:19 PM IchGucksLive: Abrafax: brandenburg hier RLP
12:20 PM IchGucksLive: hi DocHopper did you manage to clear the CNC accident ;-)
12:21 PM DocHopper: IchGucksLive: That's not me, I don't think...
12:21 PM fragalot: There are no mistakes. only happy little accidents
12:21 PM IchGucksLive: fragalot: only 4 bitbreaks
12:22 PM IchGucksLive: i told them to drill 5,2
12:22 PM fragalot: happy little accidents.
12:22 PM IchGucksLive: as M6 in AL
12:22 PM fragalot: right
12:22 PM IchGucksLive: Students Know better after Double work
12:23 PM IchGucksLive: near 40 years of expiriance wont be belives by 20 aged
12:23 PM fragalot: they'll learn eventually
12:24 PM IchGucksLive: Abrafax: wenn du hilfe brauchst einfach frage stellen
12:24 PM fragalot: and the fastest way to permanently learn is by doing it wrong
12:24 PM IchGucksLive: costs alot material
12:24 PM IchGucksLive: if you are short
12:24 PM fragalot: in the short term, yes
12:25 PM IchGucksLive: eats aöls orecorces
12:25 PM IchGucksLive: eats also recorces
12:26 PM IchGucksLive: i got a reealy cool guy
12:26 PM IchGucksLive: 5hr on the same part
12:26 PM Rab: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6b3Yny5V7lk
12:26 PM IchGucksLive: feading the Hiwin ground
12:26 PM fragalot: well, there are 2 sides to the experience vs trying it yourself story
12:26 PM IchGucksLive: cool day
12:26 PM IchGucksLive: i will end it here
12:26 PM fragalot: one of my customers had a really nice 6 meter long lathe they used to make 3 meter long shafts
12:27 PM fragalot: and they machined one end
12:27 PM fragalot: flipped the part, and machined the other
12:27 PM fragalot: so I asked a simple question; why do you flip the part?
12:27 PM fragalot: their answer: that's how we've always done it.. because previously our old lathe was too small.
12:28 PM IchGucksLive: Abrafax: nimm die Nema 24 kosten fast nix 4Nm
12:29 PM SpeedEvil: fragalot: yeah - carefully thinking about what your tools can now do is vital.
12:29 PM SpeedEvil: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dXipZPiTImc
12:29 PM SpeedEvil: err - not that
12:30 PM IchGucksLive: Abrafax: drück mal doppelt auf meine nick
12:30 PM Abrafax: hab ich vor mit Dual Shaft um später den Drehgeber anzuschließen.
12:30 PM gloops: i know someone selling a ward lathe 4 ft between £300
12:30 PM SpeedEvil: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qccUfvARO9E Setting up to use the lathe chuck to hold a boring bar to bore a bearing housing, fabbing tooling, ..
12:31 PM Abrafax: scheint auf meinem Programm nicht zu gehen.
12:31 PM fragalot: SpeedEvil: his next vid really shows how much impact gravity has on indicators
12:31 PM SpeedEvil: yeah
12:31 PM Abrafax: IchGucksLive: jetzt hab ich s
12:32 PM IchGucksLive: Abrafax: welcher client ?
12:39 PM fragalot: hi miss0r
12:39 PM miss0r: hello fragalot
12:39 PM miss0r: looking at adding this to my collection at the moment: https://www.globaltools.dk/vaerktoej/maalevaerktoej/fisso-magnetstander
12:40 PM miss0r: oh, and by the way - the magnet base I have is a 1300N one
12:40 PM fragalot: I've got one
12:40 PM fragalot: it's good, but a tad stiff
12:41 PM fragalot: very positive lock on it though
12:41 PM miss0r: Alright - is it worth the money, in your opinion? I've always gotten by with the old fashion ones
12:43 PM fragalot: i've got 3 chinese clones, and that fisso
12:43 PM fragalot: the chinese clones move a lot more freely, however most of them have lost their grip
12:43 PM fragalot: the fisso just.. works.
12:44 PM miss0r: So, compared to the chinese ones, its worth the extra?
12:44 PM fragalot: if you want to rely on it, yes
12:44 PM miss0r: I would just have loved for it to have a fine adjust screw at the base end
12:45 PM miss0r: That would've made alot more sense to me
12:45 PM fragalot: miss0r: thingybobber has that
12:45 PM fragalot: that israeli brand
12:45 PM fragalot: noga
12:46 PM miss0r: hmmm
12:47 PM Connor: https://www.amazon.com/NOGA-Dial-Gage-Holder-Magnetic/dp/B002K07CTK/
12:47 PM Connor: https://www.amazon.com/Magnetic-Adjustable-Indicator-Holder-Digital/dp/B00L5T2ZA8
12:47 PM miss0r: Connor: That particular model has the fine adjust at the dial end
12:47 PM fragalot: https://www.amazon.com/NF10433-NogaFlex-Holder-Base-Adjustment/dp/B001VXW2AQ/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?s=industrial&ie=UTF8&qid=1519238791&sr=1-1-fkmr0&keywords=noga+nogaflex+magnetic+base+-+model+nf1033
12:47 PM Connor: Oh sorry.
12:48 PM miss0r: no problem
12:48 PM Connor: That's a small one.. on 2 and 2.2" arms
12:48 PM miss0r: I guess I can live with the fine adjust on the dial end. It just seems a bit stupid to me
12:49 PM fragalot: tthere are bigger ones in the suggested things below it
12:49 PM miss0r: You are gonna have a bad time setting 0 like that, I guarantee it
12:49 PM fragalot: https://www.amazon.com/NOGA-Standard-Holder-Magnetic-Base/dp/B001VY07VQ/ref=pd_bxgy_328_img_2?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B001VY07VQ&pd_rd_r=XTRMTS7KN5TE27XVDCHV&pd_rd_w=kq6Xm&pd_rd_wg=eR9xy&psc=1&refRID=XTRMTS7KN5TE27XVDCHV <= like that.
12:50 PM fragalot: miss0r: it is a little fiddly on the fisso with the fine adjust on the end, but it's OK down to 0.01mm.. don't expect to hunt thousands though :P
12:50 PM miss0r: but that is what I want, damnit ! :] I do that with ye-oldie model
12:51 PM fragalot: well the noga is only €100..
12:51 PM fragalot: half the price of the fisso, and it's got the base adjust on it
12:52 PM miss0r: But i've heard some less than great things about the noga central locking system
12:52 PM Connor: miss0r: Get the cheaper one.. and make your own fine adjustment plate for the base. :)
12:52 PM fragalot: can't comment - i've never used one, but all the YT machinists I follow seem to like 'm
12:53 PM fragalot: miss0r: you could get the fisso, and replace the head & add a fine adjust on hte bottom all robin renzetti style xD
12:53 PM miss0r: Connor: The cheaper one IS the one with the adjustable base ;)
12:53 PM Connor: I mean a Chinese one. :)
12:53 PM Connor: The $19.00 one.
12:53 PM miss0r: hehe. I'd rather not :]
12:53 PM fragalot: the chinese ones don't last in my experience
12:53 PM fragalot: they're great the first few weeks
12:53 PM fragalot: then they start to sag
12:55 PM miss0r: make the weeks into years and you have every wife on the planet ;)
12:55 PM miss0r: and NO, you may NOT quote me on that one ;)
12:56 PM fragalot: miss0r: ^
12:56 PM * miss0r sighs
12:57 PM miss0r: Damnit. Why doesn't my local tool pusher have a mist coolant system for sale, I'd like to get one of thoes as well
12:58 PM fragalot: I ordered 2 chinese ones nearly 2 months ago to see if I like them
12:58 PM fragalot: figured if I ordered 2 I might be able to get one working
12:59 PM Tom_L: i like mine great for the price
12:59 PM IchGucksLive: Gn8
12:59 PM Tom_L: once you get the juice flowing you can turn it way down and it won't cloud up the room
12:59 PM fragalot: mine were like $3 if I remember correctly?
12:59 PM Tom_L: something like that
12:59 PM fragalot: I have really high expectations.
12:59 PM miss0r: My somewhat slow flood coolant is having a hard time evacuating the chips from deep pockets
12:59 PM Tom_L: i didn't
12:59 PM Tom_L: but i was pleased
12:59 PM fragalot: miss0r: what if you just add an air nozzle?
01:00 PM Tom_L: if mine gets chips built up i just blast it a little then turn it back down
01:00 PM miss0r: Tried it, but it made for a god awfull mess
01:00 PM miss0r: So, I think it would be better to just have the coolant enter as a mist, for some operations
01:01 PM Connor: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXu8bgz29OU
01:01 PM Tom_L: you've probably seen my utube cutting stuff
01:01 PM fragalot: miss0r: or get a cheap pressure washer :D
01:02 PM fragalot: hell you've already got an RC servo as a spindle on one of your machines.. Might as well go full ghetto style on everything from now on
01:02 PM miss0r: fragalot: Why stop there... I might just get two, that could in no way be a bad idea ;P
01:02 PM miss0r: lol
01:02 PM miss0r: Need I remind you, it was your idea?
01:02 PM miss0r: You the bad influence 'ghetto style'
01:03 PM fragalot: that depends on how long it lasts
01:03 PM fragalot: .>
01:03 PM fragalot: :D
01:03 PM Connor: http://www.shars.com/176-lbs-holder-power-magnetic-base
01:03 PM fragalot: Connor: i've never seen shars sold in EU.
01:03 PM Connor: OH. Sorry. I missed that too.
01:03 PM Connor: my bad.
01:05 PM CaptHindsight: how does one use a RC servo as a spindle?
01:06 PM miss0r: CaptHindsight: if you want something slow, compact, relatively high torque & light weight
01:06 PM * fragalot points out that "long-term reliability" wasn't in the list of requirements
01:07 PM fragalot: though at the load you're runnig I doubt there will be any issues
01:07 PM miss0r: fragalot: Well, that quite obviously goes without say
01:07 PM miss0r: ;
01:07 PM miss0r: CaptHindsight: In this design: https://imgur.com/a/XxU1N
01:08 PM Connor: $110 for a 6pc Adjustable parallel set (Starrett) good price?
01:08 PM fragalot: Connor: I paid that much for a single >.>
01:08 PM miss0r: Connor: Great price, if the condition is good
01:09 PM CaptHindsight: do they adjust from parallel to non-parallel?
01:09 PM Connor: Condition from the pictures looks good
01:09 PM miss0r: connor: Photoshop :P
01:09 PM Connor: No. too many angles from too many pictures to photoshop
01:10 PM pink_vampire: miss0r: look amazing!!
01:10 PM miss0r: pink_vampire: Thanks, but haven't you seen this already ? :]
01:10 PM XXCoder: miss0r: nice progress so far
01:11 PM XXCoder: hey pink_vampire ever figured how to add hole to spindle for flow-though coolant?
01:11 PM CaptHindsight: http://www.enrichmentmedical.com/the-adjustable-balance-platform.html
01:11 PM miss0r: XXCoder: Thanks. Now I just need to build a new linear sliding system & redo the controller
01:11 PM Connor: https://www.ebay.com/itm/6-pc-STARRETT-ADJUSTABLE-PARALLEL-SET-NO-S154L/162907872201 vs https://www.ebay.com/itm/Set-of-6-STARRETT-No-S-154-L-Parallels-3-8-2-Adjustable-Blocks-w-Carry-Pouch/391985422761
01:11 PM miss0r: Who in here was it that made custom enclosures for some military applications? (I need some inspiration/ideas on how to do a nice cabinet)
01:12 PM CaptHindsight: loet
01:12 PM fragalot: I believe that was Loetmichel
01:12 PM miss0r: Connor: That looks nice! I'd buy that
01:13 PM Connor: Which set? :)
01:13 PM miss0r: Loetmichel: Hey! You around?
01:13 PM Connor: $6.85 diff between the two..
01:13 PM fragalot: one of them says "does nto ship to belgium"
01:13 PM CaptHindsight: he might be racing home in his BMW
01:13 PM fragalot: so you can have that one
01:13 PM * fragalot snipes
01:13 PM miss0r: connor: I'd pick the first one. THe second one looks like someone took the time to make them look good
01:14 PM XXCoder: didnt know there was retaining ring in articated arm
01:14 PM XXCoder: but makes sense when I think of it
01:14 PM fragalot: one of them definitely looks like someone tried to clean them up with something abrasive
01:14 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.ebay.com/itm/GOOD-LOOKING-STARRETT-ADJUSTABLE-PARALLELS-154-SET-6-PIECES-MACHINIST-TOOLS-USA/112817974340
01:14 PM CaptHindsight: $40 for now
01:15 PM Connor: yea.. 4 days.. they always go for over $100.00
01:15 PM Connor: I've been watching them..
01:15 PM XXCoder: I wonder how makeable those are
01:15 PM CaptHindsight: just don't nick them while milling
01:15 PM miss0r: I need to start packing my tool kit. Tomorrow I have to go take apart a Pedersen mill, extraxt the X axis acme nut, take it home and machine a new one, and go back to reinstall it & reassemble the mill
01:16 PM miss0r: Its gonna be a busy day
01:16 PM CaptHindsight: all in the same day?
01:16 PM Connor: the 95.95 set looks like they have a serial number etched into them.
01:16 PM miss0r: CaptHindsight: Sure, the day has 24 hours, right? :P
01:16 PM Connor: 186020136
01:17 PM fragalot: 24hr days to do that job sounds more like you pre-order a replacement, lol
01:17 PM CaptHindsight: miss0r: depends, some are 8 hours, some end at midnight, etc
01:17 PM miss0r: CaptHindsight: When working for yourself, the day has 27 hours
01:17 PM miss0r: fragalot: Nah, the part is not that complicated at all
01:18 PM XXCoder: I always return to work same day after I leave work. so I never worked more than one day in last near 3 years
01:18 PM miss0r: The only thing that has me worried a bit is the powerfeed gearbox(s), this machine has one on each end of the table for some reason
01:18 PM XXCoder: *per week
01:19 PM fragalot: miss0r: 2 powerfeeds on the same axis?
01:19 PM Connor: So, is $110 for Starrett vs $35 to $40 for no-name worth it ?
01:19 PM XXCoder: Connor: depends on your tol I guess
01:19 PM miss0r: fragalot: Yeah. One of them is a particular slow one, the other one is standard
01:19 PM fragalot: Connor: no-names are pot luck if they're just accurate, or very accurate.
01:19 PM fragalot: Connor: starrets are pot luck if they're still accurate. :P
01:19 PM XXCoder: maybe buy 2, and swap em till you got decent and shitty sets
01:19 PM miss0r: Connor: Yes
01:20 PM XXCoder: use shitty ones for less precise or jobs that might beat em
01:20 PM XXCoder: and still cheaper I guess, assuming in least one is good each size
01:20 PM miss0r: I must admit i've never realy liked the ajustable parallels. I just keep a beefy stock of parallels in all sizes
01:21 PM * fragalot just remembered he needs to make a new electrical box for his mill
01:21 PM fragalot: the thing broke off yesterday :<
01:21 PM XXCoder: miss0r: its handy once a while
01:21 PM miss0r: fragalot: I know a realy good place to get that done in denmark :]
01:21 PM miss0r: <---
01:21 PM fragalot: miss0r: adjustable parallels are for measuring and setting up
01:22 PM miss0r: fragalot: Indeed, I use gauge blocks & parallels for that
01:22 PM XXCoder: yeah one job I use those to set part nut end flat to table
01:22 PM fragalot: miss0r: I like to use an adjustable parallel more like a planar gauge
01:22 PM fragalot: like XXCoder described
01:22 PM XXCoder: nut varies in size more than its tight tol on where hole is so it have to be done that way
01:23 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.ebay.com/itm/36-ton-x-10-DRIES-KRUMP-CHICAGO-Press-Brake/232177009708 $4k or best
01:23 PM miss0r: Yeah, they have their place in the shop, no doubt. I just never found said place here
01:23 PM gloops: renewables power generated in the UK in 2017 would have powered the nation in 1958
01:23 PM XXCoder: man
01:23 PM XXCoder: I need to get a indictor arm
01:23 PM XXCoder: maybe ill get noga one
01:24 PM fragalot: gloops: that's just because in 1958 only 4 people has a lightbulb :P
01:24 PM miss0r: XXCoder: How did you last this long without one?
01:24 PM XXCoder: miss0r: work shop has bunch of em
01:24 PM miss0r: ahh :]
01:24 PM * gloops eminates a green glow :)
01:24 PM XXCoder: just unusual need 2 this time not just one, so I keep borrowing another area
01:25 PM miss0r: gloops: Hows yer' router comming along?
01:25 PM gloops: fragalot 1958 was the peak of coal production, well not quite the peak but still very high industry and energy consumption levels
01:25 PM gloops: miss0r it works - not quite finished and on hold while im busy with other stuff
01:25 PM miss0r: fragalot: I'm also gonna get one of these while i'm at it. I've been needing it for too long now https://www.globaltools.dk/vaerktoej/maalevaerktoej/2d-taster
01:25 PM CaptHindsight: pretty sure the UK had gas lamps by then
01:25 PM miss0r: gloops: Have you done any cuts with it?
01:26 PM gloops: dragchain came today
01:26 PM fragalot: miss0r: do NOT GET THE CHEAP ONES
01:26 PM Roguish_ is now known as Roguish
01:26 PM gloops: miss0r not yet, ive no doubts over its cutting ability really
01:26 PM fragalot: miss0r: the last 2 of that exact model that I bought had 0.03mm radial play on the bottom bushing, and 0.12mm on the top.
01:26 PM fragalot: they are absolutely worthless
01:26 PM miss0r: fragalot: would the link provided qualify it as a cheap one?
01:26 PM fragalot: yes
01:26 PM miss0r: gloops: So you are quite certain it cuts well?
01:27 PM miss0r: grant :/
01:27 PM gloops: i should get another free stint after next week, ill finish totally then
01:27 PM miss0r: gloops: I'm hoping you'll make a video of it?
01:28 PM fragalot: miss0r: get a good haimer or a blake
01:28 PM gloops: miss0r theres nothing i am seeing to suggest it wont cut well, its all ballscrews and sbr bearings, everything is working smoothly, the machine is far more rigid than it needs to be for the speeds it will work at etc
01:28 PM Tom_L: CaptHindsight, went with a shars vise
01:28 PM miss0r: fragalot: but for that price I could just machine new bushings for it. (this is to be used on the drillpress anyway) On the mill I always use a 3D taster
01:28 PM fragalot: the blake is good to get in the ballpark, and a haimer will get you a bit closer.
01:28 PM CaptHindsight: Tom_L: I'm happy with mine
01:28 PM Tom_L: hope you didn't mislead me :)
01:28 PM gloops: i posted a vid of the twin motor axis jogging, can only get max speed 160 odd ipm, my target was 200ipm
01:28 PM miss0r: gloops: Indeed. But vibrations have a way of sneaking up on you
01:28 PM Tom_L: did you see that little kurt on ebay i posted?
01:29 PM fragalot: miss0r: you may as well make the whole thing yourself.. it's not just the bushings
01:29 PM CaptHindsight: Tom_L: heh, hope you don't the one they dropped but shipped anyway
01:29 PM fragalot: the main shaft isn't perfectly round
01:29 PM fragalot: and the measurement surface isn't square
01:29 PM miss0r: bleh. It sounds like an oddly shaped paper weight to me then
01:29 PM XXCoder: dropped the kurt vise?
01:29 PM CaptHindsight: Tom_L: yeah
01:29 PM XXCoder: dont that kill vise hard?
01:29 PM Tom_L: this was a little 3" kurt
01:29 PM CaptHindsight: XXCoder: just kidding about Shars
01:29 PM Tom_L: never seen one before
01:29 PM XXCoder: wow thats tiny
01:30 PM gloops: miss0r it might not perform perfectly straight off the mark, sure there will be some analysis and correction required, but i dont think there are any major design errors that cant be overcome, some tweaking to do almost certainly
01:30 PM XXCoder: you sure its real since never seen kurt vise smaller than 4"
01:30 PM miss0r: gloops: Great :] Looking forward to the end result
01:30 PM XXCoder: oh yea forgot about one we use on 4 axis machine.
01:30 PM CaptHindsight: XXCoder: https://www.ebay.com/itm/KURT-ANGLOCK-3-MILLING-MACHINE-VISE/263499557620
01:31 PM XXCoder: besides being lot more dirty than shop one, looks exactly same
01:31 PM fragalot: uh oh
01:31 PM fragalot: random popup just as I hit spacebar
01:31 PM fragalot: .. I wonder what that was
01:31 PM gloops: tbh although i was really disappointed i didnt finish this project before i had to leave off it, i am glad of a break from it, i will return to it with renewed enthusiasm
01:32 PM Tom_L: 263499557620
01:32 PM Tom_L: search ebay for that
01:32 PM Tom_L: it's kinda cute
01:32 PM XXCoder: fragalot: I remember reading about one that guy was typing and working on essay. as he was hitting spacebar windows update dialog popped up exactly same moment.
01:32 PM XXCoder: so he didnt see it at all. missed space eh hit another space and hey windows shut down
01:32 PM XXCoder: it corrupted his essay, worked hard on recovering it
01:34 PM CaptHindsight: windows is for compatibility, not for work
01:34 PM Tom_L: windows are for looking out of
01:34 PM gloops: that was the last vid https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xf5p-7VZmcs
01:34 PM XXCoder: windows is for throwing in bit trashcan
01:34 PM CaptHindsight: it will screw up your work from 10 all the way back to 3.1
01:35 PM XXCoder: gloops: you a morlock?
01:35 PM Tom_L: gloops you better get some longer wire
01:36 PM miss0r: I'll call it a night. I have to get an early start tomorrow. See you around ;)
01:36 PM gloops: yeah i got the cable, loads of it, its all stripped down now re-wiring in progress
01:36 PM gloops: XXCoder were morlocks the underground people or the ones on top?
01:37 PM XXCoder: certainly not pretty elois heh
01:37 PM XXCoder: your video is dark :)
01:38 PM gloops: oh right , yes very poor lighting in the garage atm lol, i boarded it all out before i started making the router, havent even finished wiring that back up yet
01:38 PM Tom_L: you can hide mistakes in the dark too
01:38 PM XXCoder: theres cheaper led "forsecent" tubes now
01:38 PM XXCoder: just happy I live at tacoma where its cheaper than it already is
01:38 PM Tom_L: i switched and i love mine
01:39 PM gloops: ive got some strip lights to go up, i also want some directional lights round the router
01:42 PM Tom_L: i got some of those cheap clip on lights from ikea on the lathe and drill press
01:44 PM Tom_L: https://www.google.com/search?q=ikea+led+light&source=univ&tbm=shop&tbo=u&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjL1YaL4rfZAhVQHGMKHfXhCowQ1TUIYg&biw=1064&bih=634#spd=3952082154996089250
01:45 PM XXCoder: yeah I have one ready for installation on my cnc router
01:46 PM XXCoder: also 20 bucks??
01:46 PM XXCoder: ikea its less than 10 bucks to 10 bucks
01:47 PM gloops: those bendy bedside table lamps are ok, i got a really nice used adjustable lamp for the lathe, dont know what its original use was but its easy to move and stays right where you put it, the cheap bendy things sometimes take a bit of messing about to hold a position
01:49 PM XXCoder: I saw theres nice led ring light on amazon
01:49 PM Rab: I have a couple of these on my mill and router, the magnetic mount is very handy: https://www.ebay.com/itm/282054827713
01:49 PM XXCoder: might use it for under-spindle light
01:50 PM XXCoder: LOL!! not what I meant https://www.ebay.com/itm/360-Phone-Selfie-LED-Ring-Fill-Flash-Light-Clip-Photo-For-iPhone-Andriod-USA/292452365019?hash=item441784f2db:g:3coAAOSwc6JaWldm
01:50 PM XXCoder: funny
01:50 PM roycroft: i'm using an led light that i got at ikea for my mill/drill
01:51 PM roycroft: i have another one for my lathe
01:51 PM XXCoder: ya know
01:51 PM XXCoder: it is small enough to be hackable to fit under spindle
01:51 PM roycroft: that was the purpose for my trip to ikea
01:51 PM XXCoder: and 2 whole dollars.
01:51 PM roycroft: and it is to date the only time i've ever been to ikea
01:52 PM roycroft: and i broke the rules and got severely frowned at by the ikea employees
01:52 PM XXCoder: you stayed overnight?
01:52 PM gloops: would the 12v supply from the vfd light a car light bulb?
01:52 PM roycroft: no
01:52 PM XXCoder: gloops: enough A?
01:52 PM roycroft: have you ever been to ikea, xxcoder?
01:52 PM XXCoder: bunch of times yes.
01:52 PM roycroft: there is a pre-designated path through the store
01:52 PM roycroft: they paint arrows on the floor directing one
01:52 PM gloops: hmm, domnt know what the amps are, i guess it would to some level, you get a nice tickle off the cable anyway
01:53 PM XXCoder: theres shortcuts though it yeah and ways to loop back
01:53 PM roycroft: i did not follow the arrows
01:53 PM roycroft: i went in the exact opposite direction of the arrows when i decided to go back and look at something i had already passed
01:53 PM XXCoder: ohh you evil, evil guy
01:53 PM fragalot: gloops: car light bulbs require a lot of current.. but you could probably power a few LEDs
01:53 PM roycroft: i did not know of short cuts
01:53 PM gloops: i wouldnt want 240v cable moving with the machine - to power a light mounted on the z plate maybe, but a 12v cable would be ok
01:53 PM XXCoder: dont you just use shortcuts? much shorter to loop around than going backwards
01:53 PM roycroft: i guessi missed the training session on how to shop at ikea
01:54 PM XXCoder: dont care if you do tho lol
01:54 PM roycroft: it was definitely an experience going there
01:54 PM XXCoder: kind of tempted to buy that shirrty camera light because its small enough lol
01:54 PM fragalot: I've gotten lost in the local ikea once
01:54 PM roycroft: how?
01:55 PM fragalot: I forgot something, went back & between that time they put some temporary walls up & switched off the arrows for a bit
01:55 PM roycroft: just follow the arrows and you'll end up in the swedish meat ball section :)
01:55 PM roycroft: bork bork bork
01:55 PM fragalot: it was like one of those comedy shows where they do it intentionally
01:55 PM roycroft: a benny hill moment
01:56 PM CaptHindsight: they have Ikea in China
01:56 PM XXCoder: there will be ikea apartments and later ikea cities and countries
01:57 PM XXCoder: then finally, ikea world
01:57 PM CaptHindsight: do they manufacture in China?
01:57 PM gloops: havent checked recently but ikea is probably bigger than many countries already
01:57 PM CaptHindsight: the founder recently passed
01:57 PM XXCoder: I see bunch of ponental in hacking that stupid selfie ring light to act as under-spindle light.
01:57 PM CaptHindsight: Mr Ikea
01:57 PM fragalot: CaptHindsight: ikea manufactures everywhere
01:58 PM gloops: the table of corporations v nations economies is slowly filling up with corps
01:59 PM fragalot: gloops: the only difference is that corporations have political power that nations don't
01:59 PM hazzy: I always get lost in ikea, both in the store itself and in the parking deck. I have been to the local one many time and steel can't even tell which floor I am not most of the time.
01:59 PM CaptHindsight: pretty much what Idiocracy lays out
01:59 PM fragalot: CaptHindsight: it's got electrolytes!
01:59 PM roycroft: that's because corporations are people and nations are just nations :)
01:59 PM XXCoder: hazzy: you sure its not scp-3008? if so you got lucky heh http://www.scp-wiki.net/scp-3008
01:59 PM gloops: http://www.corporations.org/system/top100.html year 2000
02:00 PM roycroft: if i were twenty-ish and in the midst of breeding mode i'd probaly hang out at ikea
02:00 PM roycroft: it's a step up from good will and cinder block furniture
02:00 PM roycroft: and remarkably affordable for a young family
02:00 PM gloops: toyota is bigger than iran
02:00 PM hazzy: XXCoder: It might as well be :D
02:00 PM roycroft: but that's about all i can say postive about ikea
02:01 PM roycroft: their stuff is not very durable
02:01 PM roycroft: it's just cheap and clean-looking
02:01 PM gloops: they depend on that
02:01 PM roycroft: yes
02:01 PM roycroft: that's what keeps you going back
02:01 PM XXCoder: not all but yeah
02:01 PM XXCoder: some is cheap but very dependable
02:01 PM roycroft: to buy the stuff you've already bought from them
02:01 PM roycroft: that's the wal*mart strategy as well
02:01 PM gloops: expand the market by decreasing the lifetime of the goods
02:02 PM hazzy: Good will won't take anything from Ikea, that says a lot
02:02 PM roycroft: that's because goodwill are not in the landfill business
02:02 PM CaptHindsight: I hear their meatballs may be used as food in an emergency
02:02 PM roycroft: but those $10 led lamps seem to do the job for machinery
02:02 PM pcw_mesa: I went to Ikea once and its cattle like herding was so hideous I vowed to never go again
02:04 PM roycroft: pcw_mesa: my most enjoyable moment there was when i inadvertently broke the rules by going the wrong way and got the frowns of serious disapproval from the staff
02:04 PM hazzy: I gotta say that the Ikea Lingonberry preserves is hard to beat ...
02:04 PM gloops: ikea has become the saturday afternoon outing for many people, or stores like it
02:04 PM gloops: going out for lunch? anywhere nice? yeah ikea
02:04 PM roycroft: and if i ever need more machinery lamps i'll be sure to pass right by them when i go there so that i can go the wrong way again
02:05 PM * roycroft prefers going to the park
02:05 PM pcw_mesa: there might be something there I might like/need but they would have to pay me $100 to walk in the door
02:05 PM pcw_mesa: same with Frys
02:05 PM roycroft: fortunately, pcw_mesa, they have this thing called 'the internet' now
02:05 PM XXCoder: whats wrong with fry
02:05 PM roycroft: and you can buy all your ikea stuff there
02:06 PM roycroft: 1. everything at fry's is returned and repackaged and sold as new
02:06 PM roycroft: 2. fry's is disgusting
02:06 PM Rab: Ikea has some quality stuff mixed in with the chaff. I have two of these under my electronics bench, they're not industrial grade but they're the cheapest steel drawer cabinets you can buy new: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10251045/
02:06 PM roycroft: i only go to fry's in emergenies
02:07 PM XXCoder: really since nearest frys is very clean
02:07 PM roycroft: i'd rather order from mouser/digi-key/wherever and wait a few days
02:07 PM fragalot: i've got a ton of 30yr old ikea stuff that hasn't let me down yet
02:07 PM roycroft: the one in wilsonville is filthy and disgusting
02:07 PM roycroft: if i were about to pee my pants i'd pee in the parking lot before i'd go into their bathroom
02:07 PM roycroft: you can smell the bathroom from 50 feet away
02:08 PM CaptHindsight: lots of popular bars smell like that plus vomit
02:08 PM roycroft: and all the employees are snarky pfgs
02:08 PM CaptHindsight: not sure what the attraction is
02:08 PM XXCoder: roy sounds like toxic worker culture there
02:09 PM gloops: CaptHindsight the stale beer aroma mellows that
02:09 PM roycroft: that's what you get when you pay minimum wage with no benefits and treat the employees like dirt
02:10 PM roycroft: my boss' kid used to work at fry's
02:10 PM roycroft: they required him to be on stand-by 24/7/365
02:10 PM CaptHindsight: 4200 Google reviews https://goo.gl/maps/tJdJpjb36nT2
02:10 PM roycroft: they demanded that they be able to call him at any hour of the day or night and he would be willing and able to go to work immediately, no matter what
02:10 PM fragalot: gladly, if the pay matches that requirement
02:11 PM gloops: sounds like the 0 hours contract stuff thats taken root here, the workers rights have been rolled back considerably
02:11 PM fragalot: gloops: coca cola is pushing here to convert all of it's staff to consultants
02:11 PM CaptHindsight: or is the Frys the dirty one?
02:11 PM gloops: fragalot whats the advantage?
02:11 PM roycroft: fry's is the dirty one
02:11 PM roycroft: that ikea is so clean you could eat your swedish meat balls off the floor
02:12 PM fragalot: gloops: you don't have to fire a consultant to replace them, plus they can work much longer hours since they're self employed
02:12 PM CaptHindsight: consultant or part timers
02:12 PM roycroft: i'll give them that
02:12 PM gloops: common thing here is that warehouse staff are getting a text at 4am to tell them whether they are working or not that day
02:12 PM CaptHindsight: https://goo.gl/maps/CqDJd5DqCr82 Frys 2k reviews
02:13 PM CaptHindsight: why you can't trust the reviews
02:13 PM gloops: thats going back to the old days where people would turn up at the factory gates, the foreman would pick out the men he needed for that day - the rest went home
02:13 PM gloops: fragalot yes thats another con they pull
02:13 PM XXCoder: unions helped stop that shit
02:14 PM roycroft: those reviews pretty much reflect the impression i expressed here
02:14 PM roycroft: a lot of folks complaining about how dirty the store is, how everything is repackaged junk, and pushy staff
02:14 PM gloops: XXCoder the unions did, but they too have become absorbed into the corporate system now
02:15 PM XXCoder: and gop whioch was super -pro-union is are anti-union
02:15 PM gloops: you cant have unions and globalisation
02:15 PM roycroft: the gop are the party of the 1% and the corporations
02:16 PM gloops: labour protectionism is totally against the principles of free movement of labour
02:16 PM roycroft: the only reason the 99% vote for the gop is because they think they will be the 1% some day
02:16 PM XXCoder: roy they are now. been couple decades by now
02:16 PM Roguish_ is now known as Roguish
02:16 PM gloops: the unions are PRO immigration now in a big way
02:16 PM roycroft: i am not pro immigration nor anti immigration
02:16 PM gloops: the old unions wouldnt hear of cheap labour being shipped in
02:17 PM roycroft: similarly, i'm not pro globalization nor anti globalization
02:17 PM roycroft: i'm not tribal
02:17 PM roycroft: which means i don't fit int our political system at all
02:17 PM roycroft: because it's not about ideas any more
02:17 PM roycroft: it's about taking sides and taking down the other sides
02:17 PM XXCoder: essentally yeah
02:18 PM roycroft: we have in this country the democratic corporatist party and the republican corporatist party
02:18 PM roycroft: they are both exactly the same except they each think they are diametrically opposed to the other
02:18 PM roycroft: so they're even the same in that
02:19 PM XXCoder: its not exactly same nor diametrically
02:19 PM roycroft: it is the same where it matters
02:19 PM roycroft: both parties exist to further enrich the rich
02:19 PM roycroft: and until that changes both will continue to fail everyone else
02:20 PM roycroft: the only difference is in the way they control their respective tribes
02:20 PM XXCoder: best way is to stop money corruption
02:20 PM XXCoder: did you see how much NRA donated?
02:20 PM XXCoder: insane.
02:20 PM XXCoder: let alone koch bros
02:21 PM roycroft: anyway
02:21 PM CaptHindsight: cheap laser weapons should tip the balance
02:21 PM roycroft: i got to try out that festool sander yesterday afternoon
02:21 PM roycroft: i love it
02:21 PM roycroft: it really is worth the premium price, there is no doubt
02:21 PM roycroft: i can see myself getting another one in a few months
02:21 PM CaptHindsight: like Switzerland, arm everyone
02:21 PM roycroft: and ditching the old sanders
02:22 PM roycroft: my goal is to eliminate sawdust in my woodworking shop :)
02:22 PM XXCoder: like switzerland, require securing weapons, and annual training
02:22 PM fragalot: roycroft: what's so special about the festool sander vs another quality brand one?
02:22 PM roycroft: fragalot: ZERO dust
02:22 PM roycroft: virtually no vibration
02:22 PM fragalot: i'm sold.
02:22 PM roycroft: yeah
02:22 PM roycroft: people complain about the price
02:23 PM fragalot: people always complain about the price
02:23 PM roycroft: they're way more expensive than other sanders, but i htink worth it
02:23 PM roycroft: my only concern is cost of consumables
02:23 PM fragalot: how well does it hold on to the discs?
02:23 PM roycroft: their sanding disks are 50% more than other brands, and to get the zero dust one must use their discs
02:23 PM roycroft: it's a hook and loop system
02:23 PM roycroft: but smaller hooks and loops than most other kinds
02:24 PM roycroft: it seems to work really well
02:24 PM fragalot: i've got a few bosch sanders at the moment but paying for premium discs makes no sense as it tears up the velcro & it just lets go before they wear out
02:24 PM XXCoder: 50% more on what? crapiness?
02:24 PM roycroft: and reviews of their sanding discs say they last 2x as long as other brands
02:24 PM roycroft: if that holds true then they will be less expensive
02:24 PM roycroft: time will tell
02:24 PM roycroft: also
02:24 PM roycroft: speaking of time
02:25 PM roycroft: this sander has an electronic braking system
02:25 PM roycroft: it stops within one second of turning it off
02:25 PM roycroft: so with my old sanders, to change paper, i would lift it off the work, turn it off, wait 30 seconds for it to spin down, swap paper, turn it back on, and resume work
02:25 PM roycroft: that's a lot of wasted time
02:26 PM roycroft: i'm not going all green and black for everything
02:26 PM roycroft: in fact, i'm already a bad festool fanboi
02:26 PM roycroft: i'm ditching the "systainer" that the thing came in
02:26 PM roycroft: and will stick the sander in a bag, where i store my other ones
02:26 PM roycroft: their box is big and brittle and bulky
02:26 PM gloops: archivist would have hours of fun with this https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/JONES-AND-SHIPMAN-CYLINDRICAL-GRINDER-CENTRE-COMPATIBLE-LATHE-MILLING-SURFACE/122969935619?
02:26 PM roycroft: i'm also not spending $280 on a vacuum hose for a $200 sander
02:27 PM gloops: where is he anyway?
02:27 PM roycroft: i grabbed an old 1" hose from a shop vac that died a few years ago, stock an adapter on the sander that i got from rockler (cost $5), and plugged it into a shop vac
02:27 PM roycroft: archivist is in yorkshire, i think?
02:28 PM gloops: derbyshire, none of my business but i think he lives alone, working in workshop with machines etc, i just hope hes ok
02:29 PM roycroft: oh, if he's in derbyshire then he's not too far from that machine
02:29 PM roycroft: i suspect he's just busy
02:30 PM XXCoder: gloops: sometimes people paint machines to make it look more clean and unworn
02:30 PM XXCoder: the paint quality is ehh so might be this.
02:31 PM roycroft: the way the water is beading up on that machine one can tell that it's well-oiled at least
02:31 PM roycroft: still best not to leave it out in the rain
02:31 PM gloops: it is an old slab yes, but for a few hundred notes..lot of machine really
02:35 PM fragalot: if it runs
02:37 PM gloops: says from a working environment - may as well pack in if you cant get that going fragalot!
02:37 PM gloops: RS Components
02:37 PM gloops: Verified account @RSComponents
02:37 PM gloops: Feb 13
02:37 PM gloops: Nominate a Young Engineer for BrightSparks & let's recognise great talent. http://l.ctx.ly/r/1amrh #EWBrightSparks
02:39 PM gloops: miss0r? is he still classed as young?
02:40 PM fragalot: gloops: electronics engineer -- I don't think miss0r does electronics
02:40 PM fragalot: gloops: and it says "in the UK"
02:40 PM gloops: he seems to know a bit of electronics stuff fragalot, in the UK yes that might be a snag
02:41 PM gloops: nominate me and ill lie about my age and you can all prompt me if they start asking questions
02:41 PM fragalot: what's in it for you?
02:41 PM cpresser: is anyone of the brits here coming to emf-camp?
02:42 PM gloops: fragalot nothing really
02:42 PM gloops: the brits all seem to have left cpresser
02:43 PM cpresser: well, i will see if i meet any cnc enthusiasts on site then :)
02:47 PM gloops: where is this meeting?
02:48 PM cpresser: Ledbury, UK
02:48 PM cpresser: https://www.emfcamp.org/
02:49 PM gloops: hmm, i thought it would be for real engineers and electronics people
02:49 PM gloops: hackers, artists, geeks, crafters, scientists, and engineers.
02:50 PM cpresser: its for people that like to play
02:50 PM gloops: my title is probably none of thise, but possibly intersects with most or all of them slightly
02:52 PM gloops: nearly 200 miles though - pass
02:58 PM phipli: heh. banks
02:58 PM phipli: can't wait until you can cash in cheques online
02:59 PM fragalot: I can't believe you guys still use cheques
02:59 PM phipli: I don't
02:59 PM phipli: my grandparents do...
02:59 PM phipli: I've been waiting to go into town to do something for a couple of months - I've not been in town during bank opening times in that whole period
02:59 PM phipli: simply because /I work more hours than the banks do/
02:59 PM phipli: plus I hardly go into town
03:00 PM fragalot: I know that in the UK you can have the ATM scan the cheque
03:00 PM phipli: not generally
03:00 PM phipli: in fact, not anywhere that I've seen
03:00 PM fragalot: HSBC in nottingham certainly does
03:00 PM phipli: there are some special machines (not ATMs) that do it in one bank I know of
03:00 PM phipli: but they're /inside the bank/
03:01 PM phipli: yeah, HSBC in Derby does, but you can only access it during opening hours
03:01 PM fragalot: are they not accessible outside of hours? (they usually are in belgium)
03:01 PM fragalot: ah that sucks
03:01 PM fragalot: what's even the point in having a machine for it then
03:01 PM phipli: one or a couple of banks did a mobile app trial for paying in cheques
03:01 PM phipli: but not my bank
03:01 PM phipli: cheques are a pain
03:02 PM phipli: don't know why my grandmother doesn't use BACS or Paypal :)
03:02 PM fragalot: she's skipping that step and is waiting for banks to support crypto
03:02 PM phipli: heh
03:02 PM JT-Shop: what is BACS?
03:02 PM phipli: She was actually discovered playing tony halks pro skateboarding on her laptop once...
03:03 PM phipli: JT-Shop, direct bank to bank transfers
03:03 PM phipli: electronic transfers
03:03 PM JT-Shop: ah
03:03 PM phipli: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BACS
03:03 PM phipli: good old mainframes :)
03:03 PM JT-Shop: dang chicken yard is a wet place and everyone is staying in the covered run
03:04 PM JT-Shop: phipli: have you messed with motioneyeos?
03:05 PM phipli: I've not - what is it?
03:05 PM gloops: cheques are a nightmare, someone gave me a cheque for £40, no branch in my village, go to town, park, pay, walk accross town, queue, pay in cheque, all the time risking robbery, traffic accident, red light mistake etc, more than 90 minutes in time
03:06 PM JT-Shop: it combines motion, motioneye and the debian os for a raspberry pi
03:06 PM phipli: To cash in a £10 cheque I have to pay £3.20 in bus fares
03:06 PM JT-Shop: I have three cameras using it now
03:06 PM JT-Shop: https://github.com/ccrisan/motioneyeos/wiki
03:07 PM CaptHindsight: you make the UK sound like it's filled full of criminals and police cameras
03:07 PM JT-Shop: https://github.com/ccrisan/motioneye/wiki
03:08 PM JT-Shop: here you can deposit a check with your smart phone
03:08 PM gloops: oh yes you mentioned that before JT i never looked into it
03:08 PM phipli: CaptHindsight, wasn't there a time when we had the most CCTV cameras per person or something?
03:09 PM gloops: people think you dont want cash because youre tax dodging or something, its not that, ill happily take a credit transfer - just not cheques
03:09 PM gloops: people think you want cash
03:11 PM gloops: a cheques comes back because they didnt dot it or something, its about a week before you get it back, then you have to go back and explain, they have to write a new cheque, you have to wait for it to clear again etc
03:12 PM CaptHindsight: sounds like a electronic payment system that is opaque to the guberment is needed
03:13 PM phipli: they exist, just some people don't use them
03:14 PM phipli: people trying to delay payment until after payday, people planning for it to bounce and people who don't have computers
03:14 PM gloops: yes thats it phipli
03:15 PM gloops: people writing cheques on a cheque hoping it will clear
03:15 PM phipli: and people sending money in cards who don't want to send cash
03:17 PM CaptHindsight: do your banks require an ID to deposit cash?
03:17 PM phipli: not to deposit no
03:18 PM phipli: Not sure that they need ID to take it out either
03:18 PM phipli: just all the details and a signature - but I've not taken money out in a bank at the counter in years
03:24 PM gloops: well, i dont know what strange bugs are going round atm, ive had something id hesitate to call a cold but isnt really anything else, for a week now, now real symptoms of cold, sore throat or runny nose, just a little bit, but feeling totally drained and crappy in general, hope its gone tommorrow
03:24 PM phipli: ditto
03:25 PM phipli: managed to avoid everything from my work, and then the missus brought something home from her's
03:25 PM gloops: feeling wiped out gets boring after a while
03:25 PM phipli: Today is the first day I've been feeling it
03:25 PM gloops: yeah same thing happened here, my mrs had it straight before me
03:25 PM phipli: sore throat and feel too warm + nose tickling
03:30 PM Cromaglious_: Got the cold here... NOT GOOD! Well maybe good... if I can keep from smoking for 4 days...
03:31 PM roycroft: or the rest of your life?
03:31 PM roycroft: you'll live a lot longer if you do
03:32 PM fragalot: roycroft: so you're saying I should pick up smoking & stop so I don't get hit by a bus?
03:33 PM roycroft: it doesn't work that way, alas
03:34 PM roycroft: if just quitting smoking extended one's life by 10 years i'd smoke a cigarette every 10 years and live forever
03:36 PM Cromaglious_: last time I quit for 5 years... hopefully I can go 10 years, after that I don'tgive a shit
03:37 PM Cromaglious_: Billy Graham just pasted
03:37 PM gloops: saw that yeah, i didnt know he was still alive
03:38 PM JT-Shop: https://radar.weather.gov/Conus/southmissvly.php
03:39 PM gloops: Cromaglius youve never stopped stopping
03:39 PM fragalot: quitting smoking is easy
03:39 PM fragalot: I know people that have done it like 6 times already
03:40 PM gloops: stopping is easy yeah
03:40 PM roycroft: indeed, if it were hard to do people wouldn't keep doing it
03:40 PM gloops: not as easy as starting again though
03:40 PM CaptHindsight: I never had any problems starting or stopping
03:42 PM gloops: you actually need someone around who doesnt want you to stop
03:43 PM gloops: i stopped for 4 years - my co-workers at the time were a heartless bunch, would light cigs in my face, entice me with packets blow smoke etc, it was that that made me more determined not to have a cig, i was beating them, not the habit
03:44 PM CaptHindsight: http://www.hennig-inc.com/aprons-and-roll-ups just got a quote on four roll up doors ~14" wide by 24"
03:44 PM CaptHindsight: care to guess what the price is each?
03:44 PM CaptHindsight: in SS
03:44 PM fragalot: CaptHindsight: 600?
03:45 PM CaptHindsight: $1400
03:45 PM fragalot: oh you meant DOLLARS. :Dµ
03:45 PM * fragalot => bed
03:45 PM fragalot: gnite!
03:46 PM CaptHindsight: 8mil SS
03:47 PM CaptHindsight: that's 34 ga
03:51 PM Deejay: gn8
03:53 PM DocHopper: Hey all, I don't know who helped me look for O-rings a few days ago, but my printer pneumatic cylinder prototype is done! http://postimg.org/gallery/111raxxom/
03:53 PM DocHopper: Leaks like crazy and has some bad dimensioning, but I'll see if I can get those issues resolved.
03:54 PM phipli: where are the leaks?
03:55 PM DocHopper: Where the 1/8 npt is inserted, and the part has some holes. It's printed on a printer at work, so I don't really have the time to get running at 100%.
03:55 PM phipli: Painting the plastic parts might help
03:55 PM phipli: and then PTFE tape might help - although take care because sometimes it can get into the workings
03:56 PM DocHopper: Ya, adding tape now, painting isn't really an option. A "Solid" print will be nextg.
03:56 PM DocHopper: Just printed this one hollow as a prototype.
03:57 PM phipli: anyhow - I'm off
03:57 PM phipli: night folks
03:57 PM DocHopper: It's ~$4 in parts!
03:58 PM Rab: DocHopper, how much pressure will be used with these cylinders?
04:00 PM DocHopper: I'm extimating 40psi?
04:01 PM DocHopper: Rab: That'll require some testing though. It's only meant to move ~4oz, but I'm sure it'll far surpass that.
04:07 PM DocHopper: Rab: What're your estimates?
04:12 PM Rab: DocHopper, I cannot say, but I was thinking that the screws into the plastic look like failure points. If the end caps fail catastrophically, a safety hazard could result. Have you calculated the stresses on those caps? Or have you considered testing a finished cylinder to destruction?
04:15 PM Rab: You could also consider constraining the caps with threaded rod, similar to commercial versions, but the extra parts and machining might undo the economy of using 3D printed caps. http://www.sheffercorp.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/ma_large.jpg
04:17 PM DocHopper: Rab: You're absolutely right! That would likely be my fail point under pressure, but my intention is to only run it at lower pressures, and considering the air space is < cubic 2", I'm not too worried about a small pop. I had not considered running threaded rod thye entire length of the cylinder, that's a great idea, maybe I'll do that for heavy duty models in the future, but for now the 1 cent screws seem pretty appealing.
04:17 PM Rab: DocHopper, I think I might have misjudged the scale of the cylinder from the pictures. What's the length/dia?
04:18 PM DocHopper: 1.25 OD
04:18 PM DocHopper: 1.25" OD that is.
04:19 PM Rab: Okay, they looked about twice that size before I looked at the fittings more closely.
04:21 PM Rab: Interesting project; what are you using for the piston?
04:21 PM DocHopper: Moving a blast gate.
04:23 PM Rab: I mean, the part that slides in the bore e.g.: http://allenair.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Pneumatic-Cylinders-NY-1.jpg
04:23 PM DocHopper: Oh!
04:23 PM DocHopper: Another ABS printer part.
04:23 PM DocHopper: Rod and Cylinder are both aluminum.
04:30 PM roycroft: wow
04:30 PM roycroft: someone is selling a 220 phase shaper on cl
04:30 PM roycroft: tht must be quite the interesting motor
04:40 PM gloops: BREAKING: Bus plunges 300 FEET down cliff - 44 dead in horror crash http://bit.ly/2sHvdQd
04:40 PM hazzy: Yeah, that sounds interesting. I think you might need a phase converter :D
04:42 PM roycroft: or a phase multiplier?
04:43 PM hazzy: Maybe a whole bank of phase multipliers in series
04:44 PM hazzy: gloops: That is terrible, poor folks
04:48 PM BitEvil is now known as SpeedEvil
06:29 PM CaptHindsight: roycroft: possibly a volt free motor, makes up with many phases :)
07:45 PM hazzy: https://i.imgur.com/bGbCOnn.png
07:45 PM hazzy: :D
07:46 PM hazzy: Guess there is a lot of current passing thru that thar switch to be water cooled
08:12 PM MrHindsight: what, is. Punctuation for?
08:15 PM Tom_L: i'm, n.o.t ;really: sure
08:16 PM Tom_L: they had spare IO when they made keybords
08:19 PM Tom_L: MrHindsight gettin any bad weather up there?
08:21 PM MrHindsight: Tom_L: we are missing it here
08:21 PM MrHindsight: just a bit cooler is all
08:21 PM pink_vampire: hi
08:23 PM MrHindsight: had a day of rain and 60F but the news makes it out to some sort of flood
08:23 PM Tom_L: looks like i'll get a chunk of iron friday
08:23 PM Tom_L: they must be close by
08:23 PM MrHindsight: how much is shipping?
08:24 PM Tom_L: 28
08:24 PM MrHindsight: you should be 2-3 days by ground, I get trucks in 1 day from Kansas City
08:24 PM MrHindsight: not bad
08:24 PM Tom_L: naw i didn't think so either
08:25 PM Tom_L: it'll hang over the table but i think 4 is a better pick than 3"
08:25 PM MrHindsight: Tom_L: I got a quote for some SS roll up way covers ~14 x 24"
08:25 PM MrHindsight: $1400ea :)
08:25 PM Tom_L: holy crap
08:26 PM Tom_L: well, my bud just priced some too for his Tree
08:26 PM MrHindsight: yeah, 32ga SS is like $20
08:26 PM Tom_L: i forget what it was but it was crazy
08:26 PM MrHindsight: have to make my own
08:26 PM Tom_L: the guys that bought his shop got some for theirs so he took their old ones
08:26 PM Tom_L: so far this neoprene is working out good
08:27 PM MrHindsight: heh, the leftover material I offered you is back on for another project
08:27 PM MrHindsight: usually that doesn't happen until you toss it out
08:28 PM Tom_L: hah
08:28 PM Tom_L: these guys at the supply are pretty cool about things like that
08:29 PM MrHindsight: also got funded to push RTAI to 4.14 kernels
08:29 PM MrHindsight: and support LCNC packages for Gentoo for a while
08:30 PM Tom_L: do you customize it for your stuff?
08:30 PM MrHindsight: yeah
08:31 PM MrHindsight: custom kernels and LCNC GUI's
08:33 PM Tom_L: do those come with keys for the bottom slots for table alignment?
08:33 PM MrHindsight: http://www.hennig-inc.com/aprons-and-roll-ups
08:34 PM MrHindsight: waiting to see where they come in for prices https://skirting-and-bellows.com/roll-up-machine-guard/
08:34 PM Tom_L: $$$
08:34 PM MrHindsight: Akon?
08:34 PM Tom_L: huh?
08:35 PM MrHindsight: the 2nd link
08:35 PM MrHindsight: hennig was $1400
08:35 PM Tom_L: oh i didn't get that far yet :)
08:35 PM MrHindsight: Akon is the other link
08:35 PM Tom_L: yeah i'm looking
08:36 PM MrHindsight: the spring roller is nothing special
08:36 PM Tom_L: i was gonna make something similar to that
08:36 PM Tom_L: no not really
08:36 PM Tom_L: this seems to be working ok though
08:36 PM MrHindsight: if it had servos it could cost less :)
08:37 PM Tom_L: i can see it getting clogged with chips
08:37 PM MrHindsight: they have wipers
08:38 PM Tom_L: i see some of them do
08:38 PM MrHindsight: the SS versions are only 8mils
08:38 PM Tom_L: awesome to slice your head on
08:38 PM MrHindsight: like a knife
08:39 PM MrHindsight: not a good way to go, decapitation form a way cover
08:39 PM MrHindsight: bbl
09:14 PM jesseg: Hmmm... Does G02 support a zero length arc? or does it think it's a full arc if start and end coords are the same?
09:16 PM jesseg: ahh that was it, my zero length arcs were showing up as full circles. I can just cull them :P
09:38 PM MrHindsight: jesseg: make any copper yet? :)
09:39 PM roycroft: making copper?
09:39 PM roycroft: is jesseg an amateur alchemist now?
09:39 PM MrHindsight: copper nanoparticles as a precipitate
09:40 PM jesseg: MrHindsight, oh, the other day I re-did the experiment but in a straight wall beaker instead of a test tube, so I could reach the bottom with my volt meter leads..
09:40 PM jesseg: It also plated out a tiny bit of copper film, but most of the copper just turned to some sludge
09:41 PM jesseg: and the ohm meter did not read a connection
09:41 PM jesseg: I'm waiting for my formic acid to arrive, I want to try something with silver acetate (the silver ink that people use in inkjets) as well as copper acetate along those same lines
09:41 PM jesseg: I don't have high hopes but well I want to know the answer :D
09:44 PM jesseg: I just wonder.. If some plated out, I wonder if the process could be tuned to increase yield.
09:44 PM jesseg: Isn't that what every visionary asks? :P
09:50 PM jesseg: Hmm, I can just subtract A2 from A1 and it'll give me the difference and direction, right? regardless of the signs of A1 and A2?
09:51 PM jesseg: maybe that's a ##math type question
09:56 PM hazzy: Talking about copper plating ...
09:56 PM hazzy: My recently widowed (and therefore slightly crazy at the moment:) neighbor used phosphoric acid to clean a large copper table top yesterday, and, thinking she was being frugal, also went out to the shop and "cleaned" every bit of polished iron and steel with the same rag. Every bit of bare metal she touched with that rag is now more or less copper plated.
09:56 PM jesseg: well now that is fascinating and possibly even helpfu;
09:56 PM jesseg: helpful
09:57 PM jesseg: I suppose the steel traded places with the copper
09:57 PM jesseg: like silver does on copper
09:57 PM hazzy: I wonder if it good be used to prevent weld splatter from sticking to a welding table
09:59 PM hazzy: Yes, I guess there was enough copper in the rag for it to be reduced(?) by and plated onto the iron
10:00 PM hazzy: Wait, is copper more reactive than iron?
10:00 PM * hazzy does not remember his chemistry
10:00 PM jesseg: I don't remember
10:01 PM jesseg: but I kind of don't see how else metalic copper would plate out :D
10:01 PM jesseg: unless the phosphoric acid evaporated, leaving the copper no choice....?
10:03 PM Tecan: http://netpipe.ca blogs back up, i just have to upload my cnc settings for laser brb
11:17 PM Tecan: there found it
11:22 PM hazzy: Whoa, just noticed that McMaster sells carbon fiber control wire: https://www.mcmaster.com/#8692t3
11:24 PM hazzy: I have used carbon fiber wire in high voltage apps (~100kV), but I thought the resistance would be too high for control wiring, I guess not.
11:25 PM hazzy: That is so cool I am going to have to get some just for the heck of it :)
11:26 PM hazzy: Overkill for limit switches? Maybe
11:38 PM jesseg: hazzy, but why.... what advantage does carbon fiber wire have?
11:38 PM jesseg: I guess it's pretty strong LOL
11:38 PM jesseg: I guess you can't hang a bridgeport by its limit switch wire unless you use a carbon fiber limit switch wire
11:42 PM hazzy: jesseg: It is for structural wiring xD
11:43 PM jesseg: Oh like on airplanes for controlling the rudder?
11:43 PM hazzy: No, I thing it does no fatigue like metallic wire does, so it does not brake if it is used in an applications were it is constantly bent back and forth
11:43 PM jesseg: or for stringing up long distances
11:43 PM jesseg: that actually makes sense
11:43 PM jesseg: oh wow I see what you're saying
11:44 PM jesseg: so like in a drag chain or something
11:44 PM hazzy: Yes, exactly!
11:44 PM jesseg: that is an amazing idea!
11:44 PM jesseg: Is it excessively expensivo?
11:45 PM fragalot: hey
11:45 PM hazzy: Yeah it is! Seems like it would be good for the pesky wires that run thru the hinge in a laptop screen and keep braking
11:45 PM jesseg: howdy fragalot
11:45 PM hazzy: hello
11:45 PM jesseg: is amazing or is expensivo?
11:46 PM hazzy: No, it is quite cheap
11:46 PM jesseg: fascinating!
11:46 PM jesseg: so where is it on their site...?
11:47 PM hazzy: Well, $2 / ft, with is not bad for something so specialty
11:47 PM hazzy: I gave the link ^^^
11:47 PM jesseg: oh sorry :D
11:47 PM hazzy: :D
11:47 PM jesseg: got it
11:48 PM jesseg: it would also be good for marine environments
11:48 PM jesseg: it's not going to rust :P
11:48 PM fragalot: today I learned that carbon fibre wire is invisible on X-ray
11:48 PM hazzy: That is true
11:49 PM jesseg: oh because it's so bloody small for a single nanotube?
11:50 PM jesseg: they also sell it on ebay for in-floor resistive heating
11:50 PM jesseg: for a log cheaper than $2/ft
11:50 PM hazzy: X-rays just pass thru it, In fact carbon fiber is used for the cover on some x-ray tubes
11:51 PM hazzy: Oh, that is interesting, so it must be fairly resistive then
11:51 PM jesseg: 33 ohms / meter
11:52 PM jesseg: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Portable-Silicone-Carbon-Fiber-Wire-Electric-Heater-Hotline-For-Floor-Heating-OH/122740995364?hash=item1c93eef524:m:mO3J_2xF-llIYxUmCpLv8Hg
11:52 PM jesseg: 100m for $31.50 (from China)
11:52 PM jesseg: hmm 20m for $7.20
11:52 PM jesseg: that's too cheap to not get just to play with
11:53 PM hazzy: I am thinking the same thing !
11:53 PM fragalot: I love the selection box options on that page
11:53 PM fragalot: you want the wire, or a LED light?
11:53 PM fragalot: xD
11:53 PM hazzy: LOL
11:53 PM jesseg: LOL I think they do that to give a low end on their price range
11:53 PM jesseg: but I don't need 324 feet thank you very much, I think 20m is plenty for me to play with.
11:54 PM MrHindsight: ultrasonic weld the connections
11:54 PM fragalot: can you ultrasonic weld CF??
11:54 PM MrHindsight: yes, thats how we made contacts
11:55 PM hazzy: Even without a resin?
11:55 PM jesseg: hmm, the stuff made for in floor heating also is rated for up to 200C
11:55 PM fragalot: I'd have expected CF to require a far too high glass temp to weld
11:55 PM jesseg: maybe it's a cold molecular bonding weld :P
11:55 PM MrHindsight: with resin you can just add conductive particles and set it
11:55 PM hazzy: Yeah, I would think it would just burn
11:56 PM fragalot: MrHindsight: that's cheating!
11:57 PM MrHindsight: how we made CF connections 10 years ago
11:57 PM jesseg: this could be good for lots of things, including things like making heated seat covers
11:57 PM MrHindsight: been done, didn't vatch on
11:57 PM MrHindsight: catch either
11:58 PM jesseg: heated seat covers?
11:58 PM fragalot: MrHindsight: that's what they said about the tablet
11:58 PM * hazzy just tried burning some un-sized CF tow, it does not burn, much
11:58 PM fragalot: MrHindsight: all it takes is a good marketeer to whip up false exclusivity.
11:59 PM fragalot: you want your product to be so exclusive that everyone has to have one. :D
