12:37 AM MrHindsight: Jymmm: how else do you cook your weeners?
12:56 AM gloops: how do you touch off from the centre of a circle
12:56 AM XXCoder: for z or xy?
12:57 AM gloops: xy
12:58 AM XXCoder: you have dial test indictor?
12:58 AM XXCoder: thats one of methods
12:58 AM XXCoder: there is few other ways
12:58 AM gloops: what do you dial off?
12:59 AM Wolf__: coax indicator or indicol
12:59 AM XXCoder: you try to make it so it touches all way around in inside of hole and stay at 0
12:59 AM XXCoder: thats when you know spindle axis is pointing more or less exactly down to center of that hole
01:02 AM Wolf__: big plus to learning manual machining before jumping to cnc
01:02 AM Wolf__: few other ways to indicate a bore in on a machine
01:02 AM gloops: it isnt a hole its a disc but yes that would also work for a circumference
01:03 AM XXCoder: oh did assume hole but yeah works that way too
01:03 AM Wolf__: in/out works the same =)
01:03 AM XXCoder: Wolf__: my training was weird, I had only small amount of manual training
01:04 AM XXCoder: gloops: of course assuming that it is nice and rounf
01:04 AM gloops: i will need some version of an indicol Wolf yes
01:04 AM XXCoder: indicol?
01:05 AM Wolf__: most of your stuff at work is jig/soft jawed right?
01:05 AM XXCoder: most of my work with a61 is using techogrip
01:05 AM gloops: XXCoder well that is the other issue, it probably isnt perfectly round heh, its wood anyway so not to a thou
01:05 AM XXCoder: if you use production I couldnt recommand techogrip more.
01:06 AM Wolf__: http://a.co/c1cNvWY
01:06 AM Wolf__: its actually a brand name
01:06 AM XXCoder: oh interesting
01:06 AM XXCoder: my C holder is starret I think
01:06 AM Wolf__: attaches to the spindle with a DTI on a arm
01:07 AM XXCoder: it dont have logo and its been a while lol
01:07 AM gloops: yeah thats useful, can clamp to spindle
01:07 AM Wolf__: I use like 3-4 different setups to indicate stuff in
01:07 AM XXCoder: you know of any cheaper dial test indictor that is similiar style as starret or mitoyoto?
01:07 AM gloops: i was thinking something in the collet to rotate, but thats more work removing and re-fitting tool
01:07 AM XXCoder: most cheap ones is different style
01:08 AM XXCoder: and I want one for home use, so i dont need $200 one
01:08 AM Contract_Pilot-A: Sup...
01:08 AM Wolf__: gloops: exactly why I use that setup
01:08 AM XXCoder: I have 2 at work so I dont need another lol
01:08 AM Wolf__: no need to pull the tool
01:08 AM Contract_Pilot-A: Comes down to having to put videos of electrical items working on ebay or ya loose item and $$$
01:08 AM XXCoder: loose item? just retighten it
01:09 AM Contract_Pilot-A: hahaha
01:09 AM XXCoder: Wolf__: how reliable is that holder?
01:09 AM Contract_Pilot-A: Not sure how the last guy got arround my ban
01:09 AM XXCoder: I dont want it to flex and give +- .001" for example
01:09 AM Wolf__: I bought a used dti (or 4) lol
01:09 AM Contract_Pilot-A: He got me once before....
01:10 AM gloops: i dont know what the law here is with selling electrical items, a lot of second hand shops refuse to sell electricals - but there is some liability involved
01:10 AM Wolf__: indicol are stiff, its only holding against the weight and the indicator tip force
01:10 AM gloops: probably wouldnt get to court just a member of the public selling an unwanted item, but someone could kill themselves with the old drill you sold as 'perfect working order'
01:11 AM Contract_Pilot-A: Returned I fixed becuase he Burt it up killed the switching diodes noted... he received then told me he just here clicking from drive I was like BS, BS, BS send it back nope...
01:11 AM gloops: oh yeah i remember that Contract
01:11 AM Contract_Pilot-A: Buyer protection claim he filed NADS
01:12 AM XXCoder: very cheap for that type https://www.amazon.com/All-Industrial-FBA_ALL-52050-Centering-Indicator/dp/B002YPA9JG/
01:13 AM Wolf__: that I may question the 0.0005” claim
01:13 AM XXCoder: me too
01:13 AM XXCoder: its typically $300 in least
01:15 AM Wolf__: I have been thinking of buying one, but i can do the same thing with a arm and my interapid
01:15 AM XXCoder: very nasty review from 20 year xp machinist
01:15 AM XXCoder: screws is brass, body is pot metal
01:16 AM nallar is now known as Ross
01:17 AM Contract_Pilot-A: This time i got a drive back he said did not work? Ummmm well here it is!! https://youtu.be/NsePo0ueajY
01:18 AM XXCoder: ugggh
01:18 AM XXCoder: hndheld :(
01:18 AM Contract_Pilot-A: Did not even contact me just did a NAD on ebay right off, I told hin i would exchange it if he sent it back!! He did i just gave him a refund!
01:18 AM Wolf__: voice activated? =P
01:19 AM XXCoder: what is voice activated?
01:19 AM Contract_Pilot-A: No just having wife push the button
01:19 AM XXCoder: your wife is voice-activated, techinically.
01:21 AM Contract_Pilot-A: Ahhh Makers Mark.... Not supposed to be drinking but cannot ever pass up Makers Mark... to wind down
01:21 AM Contract_Pilot-A: Friend thinks i sould like a car commercial reading off the SN like a Stock # hahaha
01:22 AM Contract_Pilot-A: Sound
01:22 AM Contract_Pilot-A: But I hope having videos of the drive working = sale
01:24 AM XXCoder: sometimes I wonder if its worrth it to have my own pins
01:24 AM Contract_Pilot-A: I hope to get my handme down Laptop tomarrow from the kid
01:26 AM Contract_Pilot-A: Next week have to bulk list on gunbroker
01:31 AM XXCoder: hmm https://www.amazon.com/Indicator-Magnetic-X-Range-Extension-Adapter/dp/B00OO63B02/
01:31 AM XXCoder: thats cheapest of that type of indictor
01:34 AM Wolf__: should be fine if you are using it just for indicating things in and not direct measurements
01:34 AM XXCoder: its for home use
01:35 AM MarcelineVQ: if you like that style stefan's got a build of one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=37TLOf3GWwM&list=PL4DLsnt4L2vSkeyPz2oF5hNYm9uTvReAp
01:35 AM XXCoder: for work use I have starret and mityoyo
01:35 AM XXCoder: MarcelineVQ: no the indictor not base lol
01:36 AM MarcelineVQ: in that case there's bound to be cheaper if you don't want the base :>
01:36 AM XXCoder: cant find no base one
01:36 AM Wolf__: http://a.co/6Qgitch
01:36 AM XXCoder: not same type
01:38 AM Wolf__: oh you want the stem rear
01:38 AM XXCoder: yeah
01:40 AM Wolf__: that set looks like a nice ideal
01:42 AM XXCoder: yeah and pretty cheap for test indictor. people seems happy with it
01:42 AM XXCoder: all complants is about magnet which I dont care about
01:56 AM XXCoder: uhh https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00SELM0PK?pd_rd_i=B00SELM0PK
01:56 AM XXCoder: found standalone one. and its not any cheaper
01:56 AM Wolf__: it is by $3
01:57 AM XXCoder: dont care much if its less than a hour of pay lol
01:57 AM XXCoder: that brand also has 0-6" calibres
01:58 AM XXCoder: err micrometer
01:58 AM Wolf__: i want a mitsu 1-2”
01:59 AM XXCoder: I very rarely need larger than 1"
01:59 AM XXCoder: I use company micrometers for that
02:00 AM Wolf__: I seem to be running in to more and more stuff that I need 1-2” for
02:08 AM Deejay: moin
02:10 AM XXCoder: hey
02:11 AM XXCoder: Wolf__: heh though do you certify em or what
02:11 AM Wolf__: I probably will soon as I get more of the shop setup
02:12 AM XXCoder: I wonder how expensive certification is
02:12 AM Wolf__: need to have my 3 surface plates calibrated as well
02:12 AM MarcelineVQ: Wolf__: what kinds do you have?
02:13 AM Wolf__: https://i.imgur.com/PSApHXY.jpg
02:13 AM nallar is now known as Ross
02:13 AM archivist: gimme that pile!
02:13 AM XXCoder: all starret
02:13 AM MarcelineVQ: interesting looking straight edge
02:14 AM XXCoder: so when are you open so I can pick em up
02:14 AM Wolf__: 18x24 starrett pink, ledged 18x12 and solid beat to crap 18x12
02:14 AM Wolf__: MarcelineVQ: thats a level in the front
02:14 AM MarcelineVQ: doh
02:14 AM Wolf__: =)
02:17 AM archivist: an essential tool
02:18 AM nallar is now known as Ross
02:18 AM archivist: you can basically test your own surface plates with it
02:18 AM Wolf__: thats only part of my measure stuff pile lol
02:18 AM archivist: I cant get mine into one pic either these days :)
02:18 AM Wolf__: lol
02:19 AM MarcelineVQ: "I need a tape measure where do you keep them?" "That room in the back with the Metrology sign over it"
02:19 AM XXCoder: how test surface with leveler?
02:19 AM Wolf__: rock and dips
02:19 AM Wolf__: thats a 0.0005” level
02:19 AM archivist: it should state level all over
02:20 AM XXCoder: interesting
02:20 AM Wolf__: that + indicator on a surface gauge
02:21 AM Wolf__: least show if the plate is way out
02:21 AM XXCoder: surfaces at work (besides small class B) have tested to be less than .000015
02:21 AM XXCoder: class A
02:21 AM Wolf__: I want to have that pink stone done up to A
02:22 AM XXCoder: class B one is .00013" or something
02:22 AM Wolf__: two smaller ones in B
02:23 AM Wolf__: maybe
02:23 AM Wolf__: plan to use one just for lapping
02:23 AM nallar is now known as Ross
02:26 AM XXCoder: cool
02:27 AM XXCoder: I saw video on special glass
02:27 AM XXCoder: you could see how flat object is witg it
02:27 AM Wolf__: optical flats are cool
02:27 AM Wolf__: probably watched the same vid
02:27 AM XXCoder: by that guy who probably was fired because he ground all screws
02:27 AM XXCoder: (not my joke heh)
02:27 AM nallar is now known as Ross
02:28 AM archivist: I have some grotty optical flats in my watch list
02:29 AM archivist: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mitutoyo-157-903-Optical-Parallels/162784193574
02:29 AM archivist: look at the scratches and chips
02:30 AM XXCoder: ehh
02:30 AM XXCoder: is it repairable
02:30 AM XXCoder: (dont worry, not buying)
02:30 AM Wolf__: archivist: that pile isnt really that exciting, 2x last word (one broke), back plunge, 3 inside mics, 2 depth mics (one flat blade), bevel protractor, radius set, adj parallels, telescoping gauges, hole set, simple protractor, and the 2 levels lol
02:32 AM archivist: I have a few starrett, inside and depth mike and hole gauges
02:32 AM XXCoder: glass probably by different guy, I was talking about this guy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DVLXsq7pi9Y
02:32 AM nallar is now known as Ross
02:33 AM gloops: gimp is now probably more advanced than photoshop, which is great, but most of the old plugins dont work, which is crap
02:34 AM Wolf__: oxtools did some good vids on optical glass
02:34 AM archivist: http://www.collection.archivist.info/searchv13.php?searchstr=pd+Fused+quartz
02:34 AM Wolf__: that vid on the ground toolroom hones makes me want a surface grinder
02:35 AM XXCoder: Wolf__: one shown in video is $500 a pair
02:35 AM XXCoder: or $400
02:35 AM XXCoder: could be captioning error thpo
02:36 AM Wolf__: they are over $500 now
02:40 AM XXCoder: expensive.
02:40 AM XXCoder: drop and that $500 is gone
02:42 AM XXCoder: oh it is same guy. he just used glass thing in that video also
02:46 AM Contract_Pilot-A: Need to order some SMT Led's to replace some diodes so i know this board is on...
03:02 AM Wolf__: I keep a assortment of SMT leds and resistors from ebay in my parts kit
03:02 AM XXCoder: archivist: I wonder if those glass can be cleaned up heh
03:03 AM XXCoder: because I kinda doubt it?
03:04 AM archivist: if they were reground and finished again to a smaller size
03:05 AM archivist: but they can look worse than they measure
03:06 AM archivist: like granite surface plates a chip does not make a raised edge
03:08 AM XXCoder: if ensured flat yeah
03:09 AM XXCoder: that small class B was bad till they come and re-surfaced it
03:09 AM XXCoder: its ok class b with dents all over now
03:09 AM XXCoder: workers at utah abuse stuff apparent;y
03:09 AM XXCoder: stuff we got from them when it went under was all pretty bad
03:10 AM XXCoder: was 3, utah wa and calfornia. now just calfornia and wa
03:11 AM XXCoder: ya know, could make a rock hand hockey game lol
03:12 AM XXCoder: no air needed its so flat stuff just glides across. ya know, with newly ground surface and new 90 degree support, my boss almost killed the new 90 degree support by demosating how well it glides. he barely caught it
04:15 AM gloops: baltic conditions in the garage
04:31 AM jthornton: morning
04:32 AM XXCoder: yo
04:44 AM XXCoder: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PFqjQ3l1MRA
04:44 AM XXCoder: making gear by cnc
06:06 AM Tom_L: 28F
06:06 AM jthornton: same
06:07 AM jthornton: forcast was for 19°F
06:12 AM XXCoder: 40f, washington foreverrain

07:51 AM Contract_Pilot: Needs to cost .30 to send 2 grams packet to china and cost 5.00 to send from china to usa
07:52 AM Contract_Pilot: The deal USPS made with china post was totally oine sided to china
07:52 AM Contract_Pilot: Nothine Trilatteral to it.
08:04 AM miss0r: goodday
08:05 AM miss0r: enleth: I can see it is trackable now, your package
08:11 AM enleth: miss0r: yes, noticed that
08:13 AM enleth: interestingly, there was one tracking site that was able to track this package when the postnord site itself still didn't know it
08:13 AM enleth: https://track.aftership.com/danmark-post/
08:19 AM Contract_Pilot: The NPN prox Sensore worked whoo hoo...
08:22 AM Contract_Pilot: I think the 7I7E on the 1100 behind a NUC or other mini pc will be awsome unless there is a Special NIC requirement
08:23 AM Contract_Pilot: 7I92
08:23 AM Contract_Pilot: Ahhh Cannot type this morning at all 7I92H
08:23 AM Contract_Pilot: then use a Small BOB add a soindle encoder to the mill for ridged taping.
08:24 AM Contract_Pilot: xxcoder i am in Vancouver, WA
08:25 AM Contract_Pilot: We had Snow Christmas Eve not back to rain
08:25 AM Contract_Pilot: Now
09:13 AM IchGucksLive: winter comes tonight and goes tomorrow :P
09:17 AM gloops: had a bit of snow here
09:18 AM IchGucksLive: gloops: all want the vids on german and im running out of upload traffic
09:18 AM IchGucksLive: so 2 days to new reset
09:19 AM gloops: going all german then Ichs
09:19 AM IchGucksLive: only 300clicks in 4 days so it is not that good
09:19 AM IchGucksLive: but we will se
09:20 AM IchGucksLive: i shoudt do more blender
09:20 AM IchGucksLive: but as more pro teatching better to stay NURBS
09:20 AM gloops: awesome app, not tried blenderCAM yet though
09:21 AM IchGucksLive: the 3D tests i got to see on freecad is real cool
09:21 AM IchGucksLive: sad that all heeks dev and friends PY here are not with the freecad dev
09:21 AM IchGucksLive: only sliptronik takes a leeed
09:22 AM gloops: blender never was open source, it was a pro app the compnay went bust, the software was saved
09:23 AM IchGucksLive: yes its a pixar clone in first place to get devels arranged
09:23 AM IchGucksLive: they recruted and recrute most as they make plugins
09:24 AM IchGucksLive: ok im off
11:16 AM Loetmichel: *BOOOARPSSSS* ... sorry. just had an xxxl helping of my wifes famous "einstein-heisenberg" soup... THAT was TASTY :-)
11:33 AM gloops: what kind of soup is that Loet?
11:43 AM Loetmichel: ground meat fried, then filled up with cocos milk, green curry paste and some mushrooms... its "relativ unscharf" (not THAT hot)
12:18 PM miss0r: enleth: that IS interresting. I was actualy wondering why postnord didn't even have it registered on their website the second I payed for it
02:13 PM MrHindsight: anyone working today?
02:14 PM miss0r: yep
02:15 PM gloops: no, only on my own stuff
02:15 PM miss0r: well, yeah. That goes for me to
02:15 PM enleth: define "working"
02:15 PM enleth: looking for cheaper oil meter units than Bijur
02:16 PM gloops: just installed a script for libremath, it installed but cant find it and it doesnt have a single line of instructions
02:16 PM gloops: so thats that
02:18 PM miss0r: I'm putting the final touches on my through spindle coolant unit for my EDM http://picpaste.com/IMG_20171229_211615-Y3pFIcWx.jpg
02:18 PM miss0r: Finally worked out how I was going to have the electrode spinning, while transferring water & power to it
02:18 PM gloops: looking good
02:19 PM miss0r: Looking intermistic & added to everytime I get a new 'stroke of genious'. But thanks :)
02:20 PM miss0r: So today I added the carbon brushes. That calls for a celebratory smoke & then i'm off to bed
02:21 PM miss0r: I had to turn down two potential clients, because my EDM wasn't ready.. I need to get my ass in gear with this project
02:23 PM gloops: never used one, no idea how they work
02:24 PM miss0r: This is a very simple one, just for sparking out broken taps ect.
02:25 PM miss0r: nothing much too it. I have no experience with it, other than what I learned building this one
02:28 PM MrHindsight: enleth: travel to a job site, look busy for a few hours
02:29 PM gloops: im stuck in a kind of time warp continuum atm
02:30 PM gloops: americans would call it groundhog day, go into garage, drill holes, grind, tap, take it all to bits, repeat
02:30 PM miss0r: I was called in for a pretty interresting job yesterday. A repair on a wire drum, with internal planetary gears. Today it was shipped to norway, fromwhere it will be put on a ship to go to the phillipines, where it will meet with the ship it needs to be reinstalled on
02:30 PM JT-Shop: cool
02:31 PM miss0r: The gear factory that took in the job bit over more than they could chew. It was pretty interresting setting up a 1200mm diameter drum, for grinding the bearing surface inside
02:31 PM miss0r: (on their equipment, mind you) I don't have that size equipment here
02:32 PM JT-Shop: wow that's 4'
02:32 PM MrHindsight: miss0r: do you know what the drum is for? Type of machine or function?
02:32 PM miss0r: for some cargo crane
02:33 PM miss0r: It was a mess. they ran that drum to the point where two of the planetary gears stripped all their teeth, and the chips form that got into the bearings & other gears. It was quite the mess
02:33 PM MrHindsight: JT-Shop: so do the eggs start out small and ramp up to full size or?
02:34 PM MrHindsight: how could it run without teeth?
02:35 PM MrHindsight: could they have been stripped all at once?
02:35 PM SpeedEvil: if two of three planetary gears are stripped, the remaining one carries the load
02:35 PM SpeedEvil: sort-of
02:35 PM miss0r: it is driven by a planetary gearbox in both ends of the drum. I guess they just thought it was supposed to sound like that. So they ran it screaming, untill the second gearbox clapped out
02:35 PM SpeedEvil: In the same way you can run just fine with one leg
02:36 PM MrHindsight: ouch
02:36 PM MrHindsight: maybe you can SpeedEvil
02:36 PM gregcnc_: "it's still wokring, it's fine"
02:36 PM MrHindsight: just a flesh wound
02:37 PM miss0r: maybe if you hopscotch real fast
02:37 PM MrHindsight: gregcnc_: enjoying the cold? :)
02:37 PM gregcnc_: yeah more cold coming
02:37 PM miss0r: Problem is, most of the shipping crews on these ships are all underpayed philipines workers. They either don't know its not supposed to sound like that, or they don't give a sh*t
02:38 PM MrHindsight: nice time to visit the pilipeens
02:38 PM miss0r: I worked together with two norwegian technicians they flew in to help fix it. I felt quite like the international fellah'
02:38 PM gregcnc_: mrhindsight flu everywhere too
02:38 PM MrHindsight: oh got my shot 2-3 weeks ago
02:39 PM gregcnc_: only 10% effective this year
02:39 PM miss0r: flu shot? isn't that pretty overrated?
02:39 PM MrHindsight: gregcnc_: are you kids sick?
02:39 PM MrHindsight: you/your
02:39 PM gregcnc_: everyone but me so far
02:39 PM MrHindsight: miss0r: yeah depends on well they guessed last spring
02:39 PM * miss0r hands gregcnc_ a gasmask and some alcogel
02:39 PM gregcnc_: if I don't get sick tomorrow i either already had it or managed to avoid
02:40 PM MrHindsight: i always hated getting sick on winter break
02:40 PM gregcnc_: last two Christmas someone has been sicka t home
02:40 PM MrHindsight: as a child it's best to wait until the vacation is over
02:40 PM gregcnc_: i guess three now
02:40 PM MrHindsight: 2 weks turns into 3
02:40 PM miss0r: I had the flue two weeks ago. I was totally beat up. I almost reached 104f
02:41 PM MrHindsight: not fun
02:41 PM gregcnc_: all the kids start getting sick at school just before break
02:41 PM MrHindsight: public petri dish 102
02:42 PM MrHindsight: on the good side they all are pretty much sick at the same time
02:42 PM miss0r: enleth: I think I forgot to mention: they told me you'd have the package within 3-5 working days
02:42 PM JT-Shop: MrHindsight: yes and sometimes odd shapes
02:43 PM MrHindsight: JT-Shop: have any pics of first eggs?
02:43 PM miss0r: MrHindsight: hehe. that is often how I refere to my son: two years old. he is basically a contaminated petri dish I bring home
02:44 PM MrHindsight: miss0r: at least at 2 they sleep 10+ hours a night
02:44 PM gregcnc_: we had a twin yolk the other day. do those actually hatch?
02:44 PM MrHindsight: twin chickens
02:45 PM gregcnc_: wife asked me if it's ok to eat
02:45 PM gregcnc_: i said double the flavor
02:45 PM miss0r: MrHindsight: Yeah well. At the moment he wakes up in the middle of the night. My wife is too tired to do anything but just take him into our bed, where he spends the remainding of the night kicking me in the face. If I get up to go see to him, he just asks for his mother, which brings him into our bed... ect
02:45 PM miss0r: I've been sleeping on the couch alot lately, without being on bad terms with the wife
02:46 PM MrHindsight: miss0r: hah, was similar for me only I was a single dad
02:47 PM miss0r: Theres a saying 'round here: 'little kids, little problems. Big kids, big problems'. So I should know better than to complain
02:47 PM MrHindsight: miss0r: unfortunately
02:47 PM MrHindsight: you learn how little sleep you can actually function on
02:48 PM miss0r: well, you take the good with the bad. He is just the sweetest kid at the moment.
02:48 PM miss0r: Yeah, I've reached my limit a few times. When you are walking up and down the living room floor, with a sobbing kid on your shoulder. Just thinking to yourself: "If he falls asleep NOW, I can still get two hours of sleep before I have to get up"
02:49 PM MrHindsight: my daughter was like that until 2 then pretty easy going for 10 years
02:50 PM miss0r: hehehe. Yeah i've heard tales of the teen years. Thoes are the years where you need to charge up your batteries
02:50 PM MrHindsight: son just the opposite, easy going for the first 2 then was like living with a motorcycle gang
02:50 PM miss0r: (the ones before they are teens)
02:50 PM miss0r: hahahaha
02:51 PM miss0r: I've never tried living with a motorcycle gang, but I bet I wouldn't enjoy it much ;)
02:51 PM gregcnc_: mine are super good in school and wild at home
02:51 PM miss0r: If I need 5 minuts of free time in the afternoon, I can still pacify him with 'pegga pig'
02:52 PM miss0r: Thank you netflix!
02:52 PM MrHindsight: I had VHS then DVD's
02:52 PM MrHindsight: I even made mix tapes of their most occupying shows
02:53 PM MrHindsight: tape ends, 3, 2 , 1 Hey DAD!
02:53 PM miss0r: run for cover!
02:54 PM miss0r: There are days when you question your very existence. But lately he has just been the sweetest little polite kid ever.
02:55 PM MrHindsight: we had lots of things to do
02:55 PM miss0r: I'm making sure to suck it all up, and keep it for when this niceness passes again :)
02:55 PM MrHindsight: keep em busy
02:55 PM miss0r: I just get a little sentimental about it. I don't want to miss out when he is this age.
02:56 PM MrHindsight: for me time went fast
02:57 PM MrHindsight: miss0r: what age does school start there?
02:57 PM miss0r: depends. usualy at 5-6 years of age
02:57 PM MrHindsight: same
02:58 PM miss0r: I'm actualy looking forward to the homework. My math could use a little touch up
02:59 PM miss0r: Most of the advanced math I had from our equivalent of highschool is slowly crumbling
02:59 PM gregcnc_: 20 years of excel has messed up my paper math
02:59 PM MrHindsight: 2-5 are the magic years
02:59 PM MrHindsight: all the holiday, vacation magic
03:00 PM miss0r: I seriously need to kick my self in the arse once in a while for staying in & enjoying the moment. I am quick to have my mind wander to all the projects I 'should' be working on
03:00 PM MrHindsight: 25 cent blinking rocket ship rides that makes them feel like astronauts
03:00 PM MrHindsight: it moves about .3m up and down
03:00 PM miss0r: Yeah, we have thoes too
03:01 PM Contract_Pilot: Afternoon...
03:01 PM miss0r: I had one of thoes out of the body experience the other day...
03:02 PM miss0r: We were out before christmas doing some shopping for the holiday. He saw this train running on wheels at the local mall. He just had to be on it. So we lined up for a ride, and ended up in the same traincar as the dude dressed like santa, screaming christmas tunes on the top of his lounges.. hehe I started laughing hard. Not because I was particularly enjoying myself - just the sheer clich
03:03 PM miss0r: but heck. the kid was having a blast, and I looked like father of the year.
03:04 PM MrHindsight: oh yeah!
03:05 PM miss0r: Well, its late here. I'll head on inside, so I don't miss out on the husband of the year award. See you around
03:17 PM gloops: just for future reference - there is no undo in meshlab
04:08 PM robert_ is now known as Guest72432
04:09 PM Guest72432 is now known as frobert
04:11 PM frobert: join linuxcnc
04:38 PM gloops: just watched a video about iron smelting in africa, they basically melt iron ore with bunches of dry grass
04:38 PM gloops: probably same way our ancestors did
04:40 PM Deejay: gn8
04:40 PM gloops: those primitive craftsmen could not imagine a cnc machine from their viewpoint in the history of technology
04:40 PM gloops: and we cannot imagine what is coming from our point on the timeline
04:41 PM MarcelineVQ: sure you can, that's how you get to the thing that coming, you imagine it then you work towards it
04:41 PM gloops: you can only fantasise using what you know
04:42 PM gloops: that only takes you a tiny step into the future
04:44 PM gloops: i watched this thing when the twin towers were attacked, they found this old man somewhere in africa, he was a muslim, and they showed him the twin towers going down, maybe expecting some reaction of guilt or something
04:44 PM gloops: he didnt even realise such buildings existed
04:49 PM roycroft: you lie!
04:49 PM roycroft: on 9/11 all muslims were in new jersey cheering!
04:52 PM gloops: well, what im saying is, you cant imagine a skyscraper if your only building material is mud

05:06 PM MrHindsight: gloops: begging to differ
05:07 PM MrHindsight: it's not imagination or intelligence that stops us
05:07 PM gloops: well those werent real steam engines
05:07 PM gloops: like archimedes screw - never actually used as a screw
05:07 PM MrHindsight: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medicine_in_ancient_Rome
05:08 PM gloops: romans had screws too but never used them as screws much

05:14 PM MrHindsight: none of these ideas stalled due to unions, collective bargaining or right wing snow flakes
05:15 PM Rab: gloops, we knew we wanted to drive machine tools programmatically for hundreds of years. The problems and solutions were well understood; the only refinements have been in bolt-on upgrades, and materials science.
05:17 PM gloops: Rab maybe, but to imagine a programmed machine, first you have to invent a manual machine
05:18 PM Rab: It's possible that complex machine tools don't really address the problems straw-burning guy has, so of course he doesn't need to imagine them. This why a lot of relief efforts fail; they introduce complex solutions to problems that don't exist, instead of addressing the ones that do.
05:20 PM Rab: It's fascinating to see the contraptions used to automate machining before computer control: giant pantographs; punched tape; banks of hydraulically slaved mills.
05:23 PM Rab: Stepper motors are surprisingly old technology. As soon as electric motion control was even slightly workable, industry pounced on it.
05:28 PM gloops: well i gotta go, have a nice day
05:28 PM MrHindsight: when I was a kid we all wanted a TV phone
05:29 PM MrHindsight: see some demo at the museum or in a science mag
05:30 PM MrHindsight: I never imagines that when we finally got them they would also be self paid for tracking devices
05:30 PM MrHindsight: imagines/imagined
05:31 PM Computer_barf: are you talkin about a camera phone or a phone with a tv built in? both hilarious retro like the brick phones
05:32 PM MrHindsight: back then it was a TV set with a phone and camera
05:33 PM MrHindsight: the demo was usually a ~19" B&W CRT
05:33 PM MrHindsight: maybe CIF or QCIF res on the camera
05:33 PM Rab: Future horror: everything you can imagine will arrive someday, but it'll be kinda lame and underwhelming. Like Skype.
05:33 PM Computer_barf: marty mcflys tv room looks like crap now
05:33 PM Computer_barf: but dehyrated pizza still waiting

05:37 PM Computer_barf: can't browse on this machine but sounds gross
05:40 PM evilroot: Mmm, cup pizza
05:46 PM Computer_barf: shame! the chinese will never respect us with that going on.
05:47 PM Computer_barf: manufacturing rebound over! why? cup of pizza. That's why.
05:50 PM Crom: Just ordered the CNC Fucsion $619 mini mill kit and 2 more iHSS60-36-30 steppers, yes they are NEMA24, easy enough to mod the NEMA23 months
05:50 PM Crom: mounts
05:51 PM Computer_barf: why not scratch build?
05:53 PM Crom: lazy
05:56 PM Computer_barf: well, hopefully that's not a forcast for the machine itself.
05:57 PM Computer_barf: sorry not to be a dick about it.
05:57 PM Crom: LOL,
05:57 PM Wolf__: isnt that the point of cnc
05:57 PM Wolf__: machine do thy bidding
05:58 PM Computer_barf: i think its more of a force multiplier than a set it and forget it.
05:58 PM Crom: With my buddies 33686, I'm going to be able to do quite a number of mods on my 44991, more Y, more X, more Z
06:00 PM Computer_barf: like , if I don't get my ass up and do work that day, my machines don't do much for me. I walk away less than my dreams would dictate.
06:01 PM Crom: need to find some good dovetail cutters
06:01 PM MrHindsight: nema 23 , 24 whatever it takes!
06:04 PM Crom: JMC-motor.com iHSS60-36-30 425ozin are NEMA24 and my iHHS57-36-20 285ozin are NEMA23, I have the 285's on my 3040 and putting the 425's on my minimill
06:05 PM Crom: Looking at the PaulCNC.com $320 cnc kit for the 33686
06:11 PM Computer_barf: what do you want to do with your machine?

06:12 PM Tom_L: i got those for mine
06:16 PM MrHindsight: chicagocnc Item location:Hoffman Estates, Illinois, United States
06:17 PM MrHindsight: thats where Automation technologies used to be
06:17 PM Tom_L: iirc it was shipped by them
06:18 PM MrHindsight: oh so he has at least three different ebay shops
06:18 PM Tom_L: looks like it
06:19 PM MrHindsight: automationrolls as well
06:19 PM MrHindsight: and automationtechsinc
06:20 PM MrHindsight: and automationparts
06:20 PM MrHindsight: maybe so that he can compete with himself
06:21 PM pcw_mesa: abandon ones that get a bad rep...
06:21 PM MrHindsight: I was just going to check feedback

06:23 PM MrHindsight: not bad for 15 years
06:25 PM Computer_barf: hey pcw, you helped me set up my 7i76e card a few years ago, I was wondering if the new versions of linux cnc work more out of the box or If I do a reinstall I will face similar challenges?
06:27 PM Computer_barf: I had to compile a RT kernel at the time I believe.
06:27 PM pcw_mesa: There's a test Debian Stretch image that has a Preempt-RT kernel and uspace version of LinuxCNC so
06:27 PM pcw_mesa: no compiling needed
06:28 PM Computer_barf: I mean , atm my system is running fine, I was just wondering for if my hard drive ever takes a shit or something.
06:29 PM pcw_mesa: http://www.linuxcnc.org/testing-stretch-rtpreempt/linuxcnc-stretch-uspace-amd64-r9.iso for example
06:32 PM jason___ is now known as jasonheh
06:33 PM Computer_barf: yeah, I think I might start premptively setting up a drive to have a new one ready to switch out.
06:37 PM Computer_barf: today ive been squaring up the ends on square tube , I'm building a primative cnc machine out of scrap steel to have a set up for planing wood. I have a hookup with the local wood mill, I get all their scraps under the pretense of firewood. Frankly though, I build alot of shit with their slabs.
06:37 PM Computer_barf: i mean, idk if cnc mahine is the right word
06:38 PM Computer_barf: something better than a planing jig, something that isn't quite a cnc router table.
06:38 PM Computer_barf: I
06:38 PM Computer_barf: I'm going to set up the electonics just so the x and y just continually go back and forth
06:39 PM Computer_barf: so I can put a slab under it, start it going, and just come back to a fully planed surface.
06:40 PM pcw_mesa: sounds like some pretty nice scrap if you can plane big pieces of it
06:41 PM Computer_barf: it is
06:41 PM Computer_barf: i get walnut and oak and all sorts of stuff
06:42 PM pcw_mesa: nice
06:42 PM Computer_barf: last season i put up 14 cords of fire wood, its basically a limitless supply from my perspective. I pick out the good pieces and have big stacks ready to process.
06:44 PM Computer_barf: I want to build my own sawmill at some point, its amazing how people don't seem to grasp the value of that tree they are trying to get rid of
06:52 PM Tom_L: Computer_barf got any pics of your mill plans?
06:53 PM Tom_L: sounds similar to what i'm doing
06:54 PM Tom_L: well, scratch built from steel tube anyway..
06:55 PM Computer_barf: not at the moment, if you want I can take some and get back to you
06:55 PM Tom_L: mine is a regular cnc mill though
06:55 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Column_Mill_VMC.jpg
06:58 PM Computer_barf: oh yes that's , see i wasn't even planning on sharing mine , that looks way nicer, although im talking about something more like 3 x 12 '
06:59 PM Computer_barf: do you have access to a mill to build that?
06:59 PM Tom_L: mostly hand tools
06:59 PM Tom_L: i took the plate out to my friends and he squared it up for me
07:00 PM Tom_L: and cut one of the ballscrews down a bit
07:00 PM Tom_L: the rest is all hand tools
07:00 PM Computer_barf: fill the main tube with epoxy granite or concrete or geopolymer
07:00 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Mill_Steel/Assembly/X_Axis_travel2.jpg
07:00 PM Computer_barf: hell the y tubes too could be done as well
07:01 PM Tom_L: mostly looks like the cad
07:01 PM Computer_barf: yeah your doing pretty well
07:01 PM Tom_L: i'll see how much noise it makes
07:01 PM Computer_barf: that will kick the shit out of the travels on my g0704
07:01 PM Tom_L: was gonna work on the X axis tonight if i get caught up
07:01 PM Tom_L: 20" in x
07:02 PM Tom_L: around 8.5" in X
07:02 PM Tom_L: Z
07:02 PM Tom_L: i forget what Y was
07:02 PM Tom_L: quite a bit
07:02 PM Computer_barf: there is nothing inside the z tube?
07:02 PM Tom_L: that pic has it extended as far as it will go
07:02 PM Tom_L: and it will go right up to the Z axis
07:03 PM Tom_L: no not yet
07:03 PM Computer_barf: yes def some sort of concrete
07:03 PM Tom_L: i may fill it once i test things out
07:03 PM Tom_L: see this was just supposed to be an improvement over my sherline
07:04 PM Tom_L: i may have gotten carried away a bit
07:04 PM Computer_barf: regular portland takes about 6 months to stop moving but geopolymers or epoxy granite can be quicker
07:04 PM Computer_barf: looking at that makes me wish i built my mill rather than retrofit
07:05 PM Computer_barf: but hell, one machine builds the others so..
07:05 PM Computer_barf: maybe you could have a second head that sticks out a bit more so you can swap them out when you need.
07:06 PM Tom_L: all the metal was from the scrap yards
07:06 PM roycroft: there's no such thing as "regular portland"
07:06 PM roycroft: everyone in portland is weird
07:06 PM Computer_barf: rpc is a thing
07:07 PM Computer_barf: im a geopolymer geek so , portland cement does seem plain.
07:07 PM MarcelineVQ: roycroft: "all these worlds are yous - except portland. attempt no landings there"
07:08 PM roycroft: one might argue that portland is where aliens first landed, which is what made it weird
07:09 PM Computer_barf: I took a trip out to salt lake city a few years back, ive always like geology and chemistry
07:09 PM roycroft: are hipsters mayhap aliens?
07:09 PM MarcelineVQ: hmm? no, they migrated from the south
07:09 PM Computer_barf: and i discovered the calcium carbonate oolitic sands out there, brought back like 500 lbs of the stuff
07:10 PM Computer_barf: I use my oil burner to cook it , to make calcium oxide, add water, calcium hydroxide. some clay, sand , pumice , sodium carbonate, aluminum hydroxide, BAM, homemade geopolymer
07:10 PM * roycroft is done with work for the year, and is happy about that
07:10 PM Computer_barf: ;
07:10 PM MarcelineVQ: roycroft: but that only gives you two days!
07:11 PM roycroft: please permit me at least a wee bit of revelry
07:12 PM MarcelineVQ: It is so permitted.
07:12 PM roycroft: although this arbitrary turning of the year is not taht big a deal
07:13 PM roycroft: it would make more sense to turn the year at the solstice instead of some random day
07:13 PM Computer_barf: is it really arbitrary when the winter defines the outlook of the species?
07:14 PM roycroft: what is so special about the day we call 1 january?
07:14 PM Computer_barf: I mean, if we fall off the interglacial period into the hell world of the chaotic ups and downs that lead into an ice age, then maybe its arbitrary.
07:14 PM roycroft: is there any natural or astrological significance to taht date?
07:15 PM Computer_barf: well, we just past the yule time, which comes out of saternalia.
07:15 PM * roycroft celebrates yule, as it's the longest night, and marks mid-winter
07:16 PM Computer_barf: so days are getting longer now. christmas really comes from people brining some green shit into their homes and thinking about how the winter won't last forever.
07:16 PM roycroft: christmas is a day off work and the day the spam turns from "buy this before it's too late" to "buy this because we have too much of it so we'll pretend to mark it way down"
07:17 PM Computer_barf: the day after christmas had better prices than black friday, retailers trying to extend the boom
07:17 PM Computer_barf: i mean, this year.
07:17 PM roycroft: boxing day has always had markdowns and fake markdowns
07:17 PM Computer_barf: what is boxing day?
07:17 PM Computer_barf: the day after christmas?
07:18 PM Computer_barf: box that shit back up and return it?
07:18 PM roycroft: ever since christmas changed from a religious holiday to aretail extravoganza
07:18 PM roycroft: yes
07:19 PM MarcelineVQ: that's not why it's called boxing day hehe, butttt yes
07:19 PM roycroft: it's the day that the aristocracy box up all the stuff they got that they don't want and give it to the servants
07:19 PM Computer_barf: I specifically celebrated festivus this year. feat of strength, airing of greviences
07:19 PM roycroft: it kind of is, marcelinevq
07:19 PM MarcelineVQ: a 'boxing' was a gift from the masters of the house to the servants to thank them for their work during holiday time
07:19 PM Computer_barf: probably the most jewish I'll ever be.
07:20 PM MarcelineVQ: "<roycroft> it's the day that the aristocracy box up all the stuff they got that they don't want and give it to the servants" that too!
07:20 PM roycroft: yeah, we both said basically the same thing
07:20 PM MarcelineVQ: Yes, probably started at the same time but I'm not a swift typer
07:21 PM roycroft: regifting is taboo in upper society, unless the regift is to the lower class
07:21 PM Computer_barf: someone gave me a hot dog toaster a few years back
07:21 PM Computer_barf: I gave it to a friend the next year
07:21 PM MarcelineVQ: how incredibly useful sounding
07:21 PM Computer_barf: then he gave it to the friend that gave it to me
07:21 PM Computer_barf: and then I got it back this year.
07:22 PM Computer_barf: none of us have used it.
07:22 PM MarcelineVQ: put a sticker on it each time
07:22 PM roycroft: that kind of behavior is just gauche
07:22 PM MarcelineVQ: my word
07:23 PM Computer_barf: its more of an ongoing prank than a gift. not the real gifts.
07:23 PM roycroft: but so are hot dog toasters in the first place
07:23 PM MarcelineVQ: postitively droll
07:23 PM Computer_barf: the thing is im kind of a bratworst kind of meat tube guy.
07:23 PM roycroft: so i suppose regifting is appropriate in that circumstance
07:23 PM Computer_barf: I don
07:24 PM Computer_barf: I don't think that toasting a fatty bratworst in that thing would be a good idea
07:24 PM roycroft: grilling is appropriate
07:24 PM Computer_barf: I became addicted to smoking this last year
07:24 PM Computer_barf: i mean, smoking meats.
07:24 PM roycroft: well you'd better cut back then
07:24 PM evilroot: o.O
07:25 PM Computer_barf: well, i mean, smoking meats in a meat smoker.
07:25 PM evilroot: My parents bought me a fancy Wifi digital controlled meat smoker for Christmas
07:25 PM roycroft: i'm not a meat eater, seafood notwithstanding
07:25 PM Computer_barf: i mentioned all that wood I get free from the local mill earlier.
07:25 PM MarcelineVQ: I wish my toilet was wifi so I could tweet pics of my shit to manufacturers that put wifi in everything
07:25 PM evilroot: I mean cool, but they know I live by myself in an apt
07:25 PM Computer_barf: Don't you worry about becoming Canadian?
07:25 PM roycroft: but i do know how to cook meat, and do so for friends upon occasion
07:26 PM evilroot: I don't know how the hell I'm going to use it
07:26 PM roycroft: were that i could be canadian
07:26 PM jdh: put it in the bathroom with the exhaust fan
07:26 PM evilroot: I think they thought since I use Sous Vide for a lot of things a complicated cooking gadget was a good idea
07:26 PM roycroft: friends from outside the us blame me for trump
07:26 PM Computer_barf: I don't want a president that consumes so much soy.
07:26 PM roycroft: if i were canadian i could deflecti their criticism better
07:27 PM evilroot: But my "Sous Vide machine" is a hacked $20 chemistry water bath from surplus
07:27 PM roycroft: evilroot: smoke some roadkill and give it to yoru parents for christmas next year
07:27 PM roycroft: a nice box of possum jerkey
07:28 PM evilroot: Heh
07:28 PM roycroft: that would be regifting once removed
07:28 PM evilroot: Actually this year I gave my family a week's each worth of gourmet frozen food
07:28 PM Computer_barf: I've always been meaning to try sous vide, I think I would miss the browning reaction though
07:28 PM evilroot: Computer_barf: you can still brown things!
07:28 PM Computer_barf: Perhaps two stage cooking
07:28 PM roycroft: you can sear then sous vide
07:29 PM evilroot: In fact I generally sear, then Sous Vide, then sear AGAIN
07:29 PM Computer_barf: yeah. Probably something like that.
07:29 PM Computer_barf: or sear, smoke, sous SSS
07:29 PM XXCoder: whats wrong with soy
07:30 PM evilroot: One of the most common things I do in mine is steaks or pork chops
07:30 PM Computer_barf: I don't want to grow boobs and start thinking everything is racist.
07:30 PM roycroft: i picked up a commercial food warmer (commonly referred to as a steam table) a while back to dye wool yarn
07:30 PM XXCoder: lol
07:30 PM evilroot: Absolutely perfect medium rare all the way through, but the outside crusty from a quick hit with a torch
07:30 PM XXCoder: gonna love ez-think. everything is easy
07:31 PM XXCoder: too bad its useless to me
07:31 PM roycroft: the dyes have to be held at fairly precise temperatures and ramped up and down slowly to prevent excessive shrinking and felting
07:31 PM evilroot: Also makes amazing pork
07:31 PM roycroft: so i put together a pid controller for it
07:31 PM roycroft: it worked brilliantly
07:31 PM Computer_barf: idk my smoked pork butts have been off the chain
07:31 PM evilroot: Pork cooked to 165 is dry
07:31 PM roycroft: and then i realised all i needed to do was buy a different insert and temperature probe and i could use it for sous vide as well
07:31 PM evilroot: I can use Sous Vide to cook it to 145 but still be safe
07:32 PM roycroft: not so much to keep the sous vide from getting contaminated
07:32 PM evilroot: Since it's held there for over an hour
07:32 PM Computer_barf: i think its , much about the rub and flavor from the wood
07:32 PM evilroot: Pork shoulder is the cut of choice here in NC
07:32 PM roycroft: because there's no way it should be able too, assuming my pouches are sealed properly
07:33 PM Computer_barf: do you have to break it down or is it even possible to do a whole pork shoulder with SV?
07:33 PM roycroft: it just seemed prudent to keep dyes and food separate
07:33 PM evilroot: Sure its possible! Just takes several days
07:33 PM roycroft: you can put whatver fits in the cooker in
07:33 PM roycroft: it will never, ever overcook
07:33 PM evilroot: Mine is 11 gallons
07:33 PM evilroot: haha
07:33 PM roycroft: it will just get to your set point and stay there
07:33 PM Computer_barf: was wondering if it might take too long for the center to get hot enough to not spoil
07:34 PM XXCoder: was wondering about that.
07:34 PM roycroft: if you set the temperature to 60 degrees or higher you'll pasteurize as you go
07:34 PM evilroot: Exactly
07:34 PM XXCoder: C i guess
07:34 PM roycroft: but yeah, if it takes a long long time to heat up the center, it might start spoiling a bit before the bacteria are killed
07:34 PM roycroft: that just adds complexity to the flavor profile
07:35 PM roycroft: and makes it artisan sous vide
07:35 PM Computer_barf: this conversation is too tasty sounding for me to get my milling on
07:35 PM XXCoder: as long as it dont build up enough poisons
07:35 PM roycroft: i would not try to sous vide a whole bullalo
07:36 PM tiwake: ponies
07:36 PM roycroft: that would likely not work out well
07:36 PM evilroot: Erm, even a whole shoulder that would never be a problem
07:36 PM roycroft: buffalo
07:36 PM Computer_barf: I got foolishly close to a buffalo when i was in Utah that one time.
07:36 PM roycroft: unless it's a whale shoulder
07:36 PM evilroot: heh
07:38 PM XXCoder: unless it's a human shoulder
07:39 PM Computer_barf: damnit hannibal, stop showing me fancy dishes
07:39 PM XXCoder: donnor party ;)
07:40 PM roycroft: i prefer the blitzen party
07:42 PM Computer_barf: I've never had raindeer
07:43 PM XXCoder: donner heh
07:44 PM MrHindsight: jym posted this inappropriate cooking device the other day https://i.imgur.com/kEWUsNu.png
07:45 PM Computer_barf: kek
07:46 PM MrHindsight: I'm sure it would sell
07:46 PM Computer_barf: guys how can i become immune to needle like chips
07:46 PM MrHindsight: grow thicker skin
07:47 PM MrHindsight: or a shell
07:47 PM XXCoder: eat some, you will gain immunity to it
07:47 PM XXCoder: get some mutant goo and grow exo
07:47 PM MrHindsight: in the future you should be able to genetically modify yourself add things like shells and elephant skin
07:48 PM XXCoder: MrHindsight: harder to mod adults.
07:48 PM MrHindsight: crab claws could benefit welders
07:48 PM Computer_barf: how much metal does there need to be inside me before I can officially register as a robot?
07:49 PM XXCoder: robot no. metal man maybe heh
07:49 PM MrHindsight: it might be quantity and placement
07:49 PM XXCoder: https://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/marvel_dc/images/8/8f/Metal_Men_04.jpg
07:49 PM MrHindsight: pipe smokers get all the babes
07:50 PM XXCoder: Don't lick L guy, and don't touch red one
07:50 PM XXCoder: imange money needed to make gold guy. or worse that planium one
07:50 PM Computer_barf: all that metal and they still just men
08:01 PM MrHindsight: http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTmK26yLS-QY3qX02o7_GfwX-SVSZfK7vBwqHgif6nXzwwLd-1W
08:02 PM MrHindsight: according to the title they are robots that think they are men
08:07 PM XXCoder: yeah they was orginially robots till they gained full control of their element
08:08 PM XXCoder: tin was last one to finally do it, because it has 13 alltopies if I recall right heh
08:10 PM Crom: Just ordered 2TB drive for the 33686 control computer, ordered 2 Touch screen monitors for both CNC computers, ordered 2 Mesa 7I92M Anything I/O Ethernet card
08:11 PM Crom: YAY, GMOCCAPY touch screen!
08:15 PM Tom_L: SSD?
08:15 PM Tom_L: :)
08:15 PM Crom: not yet...
08:16 PM Tom_L: got an old rust bucket ehh?
08:17 PM MrHindsight: XXCoder: I think in 30 years or so people will get body mods like they get tattoos today
08:17 PM Crom: Thinking about getting a new ITX motherboard, since I don't need a LPT port now
08:17 PM MrHindsight: simple mods at first
08:17 PM MrHindsight: nothing like crab legs or shrimp heads
08:18 PM MrHindsight: but skin, eye and hair colors
08:35 PM skunkworks: long live LPT!
08:37 PM Tom_L: YAY!
08:37 PM Tom_L: i'm still using mine :)
08:37 PM Tom_L: i must say, i'd like to try the ethernet cards though
08:37 PM Tom_L: i'd have to upgrade my MB if i did
08:38 PM skunkworks: they work very well
08:38 PM Tom_L: the preempt doesn't do so well on this MB
08:38 PM skunkworks: ah - it definatly works better with newer hardware
08:39 PM Tom_L: so until it becomes a must i'll probably stick with what i've got
08:39 PM Tom_L: i do have an asrock board it would work fine on
08:40 PM skunkworks: heh - http://electronicsam.com/images/matsuura/20171209_181904.jpg
08:40 PM Tom_L: wtf is that?
08:40 PM skunkworks: I sketch like a 5 yearold
08:40 PM Tom_L: heh
08:40 PM Tom_L: looked like some of mine
08:41 PM skunkworks: http://electronicsam.com/images/matsuura/20171207_100653.jpg
08:42 PM Tom_L: you've got a couple tabs open there
08:42 PM skunkworks: side note - the laptop reboots consistantly now that I removed virtualbox
08:42 PM skunkworks: realtime is awesome :)
08:42 PM XXCoder: MrHindsight: and probablky as looked-down upon like in earlier days
08:42 PM XXCoder: but more acceptance later
08:43 PM skunkworks: still trying to optimize kvm - but it is running fusion 360 in windows 7 'ok'
08:43 PM Tom_L: i've got all the hardware to upgrade and run preempt, i just need a box for my latest MB with onboard M2 support
08:43 PM Tom_L: then this pc would be running linuxcnc instead of chatting here
08:44 PM XXCoder: MrHindsight: there would be.... interesting debates in future. for example is mod that add 10 times more cones in eyes for sharper sight acceptable in baseball or football?
08:45 PM Tom_L: i think i'll wait a bit to try f360 until they get a few things ironed out in it
08:45 PM XXCoder: how about mod that removes natural musicle decay when not being exercised (like that very rare musicle disorder)
08:46 PM Tom_L: sam, are all the ethernet boards db25 configuration?
08:47 PM Tom_L: any 40 pin headers to support those daughter cards
08:48 PM skunkworks: yes - there is a 7i80 3 50 pin
08:49 PM skunkworks: http://store.mesanet.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=62
08:49 PM skunkworks: I am using that on the matsurra
08:49 PM skunkworks: matsuura
08:49 PM skunkworks: linuxcnc is awesome
08:50 PM Tom_L: similar layout to the 7i90?
08:50 PM Tom_L: just ethernet instead
08:50 PM skunkworks: yes - or 5i20
08:50 PM skunkworks: (pci)
08:51 PM Tom_L: cool, i could just plug my cards into it then
08:51 PM Tom_L: and download the config file
08:51 PM skunkworks: sure - that is partly why we have been using the 50 pin stuff - the K&T has 2 5i20s - interchangeble parts for troubleshooting
08:52 PM skunkworks: not that we have had to...
08:52 PM Tom_L: i'll be moving my control off the sherline to this new mill i'm building
08:53 PM XXCoder: skunkworks: tons of pins eh
08:53 PM Tom_L: 72 io on that one
08:53 PM skunkworks: and expandable
08:53 PM skunkworks: throw a smart serial board and away you go
08:53 PM Tom_L: you don't run it thru a switch do you? just direct from a pc?
08:54 PM XXCoder: smart serial board?
08:54 PM Tom_L: yeah
08:54 PM skunkworks: yes - I had bought some gigabyte boards that had 2 nics
08:54 PM Tom_L: nice
08:54 PM Tom_L: XXCoder basically a serial io expander
08:54 PM XXCoder: im not confirming it, im asking what it is :)
08:54 PM XXCoder: ahh ok
08:54 PM Tom_L: (simplified explanation)
08:54 PM skunkworks: high speed serial
08:55 PM skunkworks: http://electronicsam.com/images/matsuura/20170121_153649.jpg
08:56 PM skunkworks: lower right is smart serial expantion board
08:56 PM skunkworks: interconnects with network cables
08:56 PM XXCoder: I guessed it was, since it had bunch of serial connectors
08:56 PM skunkworks: http://electronicsam.com/images/matsuura/20170121_153520.jpg
08:56 PM XXCoder: such a thick parallel cable
08:57 PM skunkworks: the top board is a mesa smart serial daughter board. 48 i/o
08:57 PM XXCoder: I really need to figure how to make layout for my cnc controller box
08:57 PM XXCoder: and get better cables for steppers
08:57 PM skunkworks: plug right into opto22 boards
08:58 PM XXCoder: rope is strain relief?
08:58 PM Tom_L: where did the boards below it come from?
08:59 PM Tom_L: octagon systems..
08:59 PM Tom_L: is that original to the machine?
08:59 PM Tom_L: hey pete
08:59 PM BeachBumPete: Hey Tom_L
09:00 PM XXCoder: hey homeless
09:00 PM skunkworks: Tom_L, no - ebay
09:01 PM Tom_L: BeachBumPete, http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Mill_Steel/Assembly/X_Axis_travel2.jpg
09:01 PM Tom_L: i think i may extend the overhang a little more
09:01 PM Tom_L: make a spare but longer
09:01 PM BeachBumPete: starting to look like a Mochine
09:01 PM skunkworks: Tom_L, the drawn sketch was me playing with https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l5oSA1lPLgA
09:02 PM XXCoder: Tom_L: x is done yet?
09:02 PM Tom_L: not quite
09:02 PM Tom_L: that's what i was working on last and ran out of time
09:02 PM Tom_L: skunkworks, prety cool
09:05 PM skunkworks: all linuxcnc and mesa
09:05 PM skunkworks: (thcad)
09:06 PM Tom_L: yeah
09:14 PM skunkworks: I really need to learn fusion
09:14 PM XXCoder: dunno fusion tech is still being researched ;)
09:14 PM skunkworks: heh - autodesk
09:14 PM XXCoder: yeah
09:15 PM roycroft: fission is good enough for me
09:21 PM Tom_L: too bad some of the others don't offer their stuff for hobbyists etc
09:42 PM skunkworks: yes - it is amazing what you get for 'free'
10:55 PM Contract_Pilot: My kid gave me his laptop today whooo hooo somthing to do clean install of winblows.
10:55 PM skunkworks: windows is so 1990
11:00 PM Contract_Pilot: I am forced to have it
11:00 PM Contract_Pilot: jeppview
11:11 PM Contract_Pilot: I may dual boot this one
11:17 PM skunkworks: why not a virtual machine?
11:18 PM Contract_Pilot: Never done one
11:19 PM enleth: Contract_Pilot: https://www.virtualbox.org/
11:19 PM enleth: or install from your distro's repository
11:20 PM enleth: (probably a better idea as you'll be getting the kernel modules updated automatically with everything else)
11:21 PM enleth: the only shortcoming is lack of good 3D hardware acceleration, so there's a chance your app might be slow on the software rasterizer, or glitchy on the incomplete hardware 3D support there is
11:21 PM enleth: but give it a try
11:23 PM enleth: (it *is* possible to even pass a whole full graphics card directly to the VM, but not really in VirtualBox and it doesn't make a lot of sense on a laptop)
11:23 PM MrHindsight: XXCoder: spent the last 1-2 hours tanning by welderlight
11:24 PM XXCoder: fancy
11:24 PM MrHindsight: any parties Sunday night?
11:24 PM XXCoder: is there such thing as "welder sigma" tan
11:24 PM MrHindsight: will be below 0F here this weekend
11:25 PM MarcelineVQ: I weld with sunscreen on hoho
11:25 PM MrHindsight: -10F Sunday night
11:25 PM MarcelineVQ: though if you end up getting dirty fast enough during a job it does pretty well too
11:25 PM roycroft: i'm having folks over on sunday night
11:26 PM roycroft: tomorrow is a long day in the shop though
11:26 PM MrHindsight: I'm welding all weekend
11:26 PM roycroft: i'm sorry
11:26 PM MrHindsight: I can't do any prep and paint for another week
11:26 PM roycroft: i don't mind welding, but i'm always very happy when i'm done welding
11:27 PM MrHindsight: I'm TIG welding body panels
11:27 PM MrHindsight: was not behaving tonight, crappy puddles
11:28 PM Contract_Pilot: My hand me down laptop. only bchange is the wirless card https://support.toshiba.com/support/staticContentDetail?contentId=4001625&isFromTOCLink=false
11:28 PM MrHindsight: probably ground off 90% of the silicon bronze
11:28 PM Contract_Pilot: 32gb ram
11:29 PM Contract_Pilot: GTX 770M with 3gb should handel cad ok..
11:29 PM MrHindsight: Contract_Pilot: not bad I'll trade for a 2006 Core Duo HP 17" (32b)
11:30 PM MrHindsight: hard to believe it's only been 10 years of 64b cpus
11:30 PM MarcelineVQ: I'm not sure virtalbox can use pci-e passthrough, would have to check, you might need something else if you want to cad with a vm
11:30 PM MrHindsight: I'm pretty sure VB has passthrough
11:30 PM Crom: oops, just bought a $900 52" w/ bluettoth speak tool box for$668
11:31 PM MrHindsight: I still run cad apps on a network free win7 box
11:32 PM MarcelineVQ: oh, that laptop's cpu doens't have VT-d anyway
11:32 PM MrHindsight: I have to try VirtualBox again
11:32 PM MarcelineVQ: so it's moot
11:33 PM XXCoder: Crom: bluetooth speak tool?
11:33 PM MrHindsight: krap, we won't even see 20F for another week at least
11:33 PM MrHindsight: I guess it's good fake snow weather
11:34 PM MarcelineVQ: it fake snowed here today, was raining, dumped 6 inches of snow, rained it away
11:34 PM XXCoder: here its 40f even though short distance to east theres snow and ice hazard
11:34 PM XXCoder: constant rain though. havent stopped all day, flood and wind warnings here
11:37 PM Crom: speaker
11:37 PM Crom: Husky 52" Tool box with outlets & Bluetooth speakers
11:46 PM Crom: Freezing here... 52F, was almost warm today... only got up to 87F
11:46 PM XXCoder: ahh ok
11:46 PM XXCoder: I now recall seeing something like that.
11:46 PM XXCoder: fancy. I dont need such feature tho lol
11:47 PM Crom: My Kit Kat bar melted in the car
11:47 PM XXCoder: 52f freezing lol
11:47 PM XXCoder: I can go around coatless at that temp
11:47 PM XXCoder: and 87f is hot
11:48 PM Crom: 100 is hot, 90 is perfect
11:48 PM Tom_L: 27F currently
11:48 PM Crom: The low is supposed to be 42F
11:49 PM XXCoder: here it was supposed to be 29f low, but constant rain "froze" it at 40f
11:51 PM XXCoder: damn starting to have power issues. typical in forever rain days
11:52 PM MrHindsight: it's 63F in the shop right now
11:53 PM MrHindsight: any warmer and I might break out in a sweat
11:53 PM MrHindsight: XXCoder: voltage drops or brown out for a second or two?
11:55 PM MrHindsight: power in the new place is great, the old shop used to lose power twice a year for 1 minute, between seasons
11:55 PM XXCoder: very brief brownout. hard to tell because leds dont need that much power
11:55 PM XXCoder: and they all have small caps to cover short brownouts
11:56 PM MrHindsight: oh and it would only happen when you are running a machine
11:57 PM Crom: It would be nice to have enough rain to have power problems
11:57 PM XXCoder: not when house founion have problems. water downstairs now
11:57 PM XXCoder: minor leak but yeah
11:58 PM Crom: slab house here, no basement
