01:10 AM IchGucksLive: hi
01:12 AM gloops: Ichs, final timing belt advice please - standard cheapo belt or more expensive ones? is there much difference
01:12 AM jesseg: Good morning IchGucksLive
01:12 AM IchGucksLive: ;-)
01:12 AM IchGucksLive: standard
01:12 AM IchGucksLive: 10mm for 3Nm
01:13 AM IchGucksLive: 16 for 8Nm
01:13 AM IchGucksLive: 25 <
01:13 AM gloops: great thanks my pulleys are 10mm
01:13 AM IchGucksLive: gloops: http://maedler.de/product/1643/zahnriemenraeder-zahnriemen-und-zubehoer
01:14 AM IchGucksLive: i use all t5
01:14 AM IchGucksLive: but XL is the same
01:14 AM gloops: polyeurathane?
01:14 AM IchGucksLive: if better in England
01:15 AM IchGucksLive: http://maedler.de/product/1643/1616/981/zahnriemen-xl-037
01:15 AM IchGucksLive: the main used is the 90xl at 3Euros
01:16 AM gloops: and these are ok for backlash?
01:16 AM IchGucksLive: no backlash if you got more then 4teeth on belt pulley match
01:16 AM IchGucksLive: as they clamp etch othere on 4
01:17 AM gloops: should be fine then, small pulley is 40 teeth
01:17 AM IchGucksLive: no the teeth in action
01:17 AM IchGucksLive: hart to tell in EN
01:18 AM gloops: there should be about 20 teeth engaged
01:18 AM IchGucksLive: on one pulley 4 is enoph
01:18 AM IchGucksLive: to get bet result
01:19 AM gloops: right, ill get some of those belts
01:19 AM IchGucksLive: the XL are mutch cheeper
01:19 AM IchGucksLive: then the T5
01:21 AM gloops: well ill try the t5, its not a big thing to change later if any problems, i want them before xmas break so i can get on with finishing machine
01:21 AM gloops: also noticed alu prices are down - from £80 to £56 for my plates
01:22 AM gloops: the reduced backlash belts are pretty expensive - as much as the screws
02:22 AM Deejay: moin
02:55 AM MattyMatt: gloops http://www.beltingonline.com have a good choice
02:55 AM MattyMatt: too slow
04:58 AM Loetmichel: Grmpf. I hate cheap extension cord drums.. wondered why the postage scale is complaining/beeping about low battery when plugged in... turns out that the extension cords overtemperature fuse is tripping seconds after being resetted all by its own, even when not pluggen in. Cheap chinese junk :-( http://www.cyrom.org/palbum/main.php?g2_itemId=16912
06:00 AM Tom_L: 29°F
06:01 AM Tom_L: JT-Shop, around?
06:01 AM jthornton: no, too early for him to be out there
06:01 AM Tom_L: the feed tube had pulled partwayout of the welder causing a gas leak: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Mill_Steel/Welding/test_bead2.jpg
06:01 AM jthornton: 26f
06:02 AM Tom_L: what causes the brown soot?
06:04 AM jthornton: dunno
06:04 AM jthornton: weld looks a lot better
06:04 AM Tom_L: amazing what shield gas does :)
06:05 AM jthornton: yea if i forget to open the valve it's amazing how crappy the weld looks
06:05 AM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Mill_Steel/Welding/Z_Column2.jpg
06:06 AM Tom_L: i don't think i would have had to grind all the rust off the base but i did
06:07 AM jthornton: clean metal makes a much better weld joint
06:08 AM Tom_L: that was a frustrating one to figure out for sure
06:16 AM archivist: getting ones welds to a certain standard, https://metallurgyandmaterials.wordpress.com/2015/12/25/liberty-ship-failures/
06:44 AM _methods: ah that bead looks alot better
06:46 AM _methods: Tom_L: that middle bead still looks a little cold on the column though
06:48 AM _methods: were you trying to weld uphill or downhill?
08:18 AM miss0r: what are we welding?
08:18 AM archivist: making his own milling machine design
08:19 AM MarcelineVQ: in this case a nice solid column for it
08:20 AM miss0r: I must've joined after the picture link, mind posting again?
08:20 AM archivist: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Mill_Steel/Welding/Z_Column2.jpg
08:20 AM MarcelineVQ: the server is down/slow atm, for me anyway
08:21 AM miss0r: who is the maker?
08:21 AM archivist: web is a bit odd for me today too
08:21 AM MarcelineVQ: Tom_L
08:22 AM miss0r: _methods: That is clearly a climb welding.
08:23 AM _methods: i have no idea
08:25 AM _methods: i don't know how he had it positioned when he welded it
08:25 AM _methods: that's why i was asking him
08:25 AM Deejay: re
08:25 AM miss0r2: apparently my internet is acting a bit strange at the moment
08:27 AM miss0r2: Tom_L: do you have an overall plan with the thing?
10:08 AM jym: Um, a lil scarry ---> Emptying the Trash... preparing to delete 118,109 files
10:11 AM gregcnc: jym I hate to see what your garage looks like
10:13 AM Loetmichel: gregcnc: want a preview? -> http://www.cyrom.org/palbum/main.php?g2_itemId=9033&g2_imageViewsIndex=3
10:13 AM Loetmichel: :-)))
10:45 AM jym: gregcnc: lol, why's that?
10:51 AM jym: gregcnc: But, since you asked... https://i.imgur.com/Ol7mstP.png
10:52 AM jym: Less the drill press sitting on the floor, just sold that yesterday =)
10:55 AM gregcnc: at least it's an organized 118,109 parts
10:56 AM jym: I love those racks! Even though the casters are shit, the shelves are rated at 1200lbs each, and the whole rack is rated at 3000 lbs
10:56 AM archivist: costco racks?
10:57 AM jym: gregcnc: HA! That rack with the red-lid jars are the nuts, bolts, screws, etc. Took me FOREVER to save up those jars.
10:57 AM jym: archivist: Yeah, most are costco,
10:58 AM gregcnc: looks like a lot of pb&j
10:58 AM jym: gregcnc: 2.5lb jars of cashews actually =)
10:58 AM jym: Oh, the top jars are PB
10:58 AM archivist: lack of barcodes on the boxes error
10:59 AM jym: You drop a jar, it doens't matter.
10:59 AM archivist: then you can have a map like http://www.collection.archivist.info/shelfview.php?src=artitle&locid=568
11:00 AM jym: archivist: haha, sharpie and masking tape. MY label maker died, but everything is labeled
11:00 AM jym: archivist: You see the box that says "TOOL", each container has a pocet on it, so I just replace the insert when the contents changes. makes it easy enough.
11:01 AM jym: pocket*
11:01 AM archivist: I can generally get to a manuals in a few minutes now
11:01 AM jym: There's a filing cabinet (off screen) for that.
11:03 AM archivist: trouble comes when a manual is in the bottom of a box at the base of a stack of boxes
11:04 AM jym: Right now, I'm in the process of getting rid of much of that stuff. Once I sell the cnc router it'll remove a bulk of the bigger stuff.
11:05 AM jym: archivist: I had to move once, and found moving 400 lbs of books was not fun. Ever since I just stopped getting books except for reference material.
11:06 AM roycroft: my library is over 3000 books
11:06 AM jym: If it aint in digital format, forget it.
11:06 AM roycroft: it would take probably the better part of a day to just box and move them
11:07 AM jdh: I still have lots of books in boxes from my last move 20 years ago
11:07 AM roycroft: it took me hundreds of hours to catalog, classify, label, and shelve them
11:07 AM jym: Hell, I have a container of DVD/CD's that's 50 lbs and it annoys me. Lookig at getting a BD-R drive just so I can reduce that down.
11:08 AM archivist: I update, sort and reshelve which updates the locations and map
11:08 AM jym: "You spend the first part of your life collecting things, and the last half trying to get rid of them all" =)
11:09 AM archivist: takes years
11:09 AM roycroft: i have over 3500 cds
11:09 AM archivist: sod getting rid, have to have something to read on the throne
11:09 AM roycroft: they're all ripped and on a media server now
11:09 AM roycroft: but i haven't classified them yet
11:09 AM roycroft: they're cataloged, but not in a very well organized way
11:10 AM roycroft: there are no standard schemas for classifying cds, i've found - every library develops its own method
11:11 AM jym: roycroft: I have a 8TB NAS for all that too. But I simply do [ARTIST - ALBUM] / [ARTIST - TITLE], no track#'s
11:11 AM roycroft: currently i shelve them sorted by genre, alphabetically by artist, and as much as possible, chronologically by release
11:11 AM roycroft: date
11:11 AM roycroft: but that's not a great schema
11:12 AM roycroft: and until i decide on a good classification scheme they'll remain that way
11:12 AM archivist: I think the act of cataloguing actually forces the scheme
11:12 AM jym: FOLDER ---> Pink Floyd - Delicate Sound of Thunder (1of2).flac
11:12 AM roycroft: fortunately they're all in a database that is easily searchable, and more fortunately, i almost never need to touch a physical cd - the majority of my cds have been played exactly once, when i ripped them
11:13 AM jym: SONG ---> Pink Floyd - Shine on You Crazy Diamond.flac
11:13 AM roycroft: so how they're shelved is not particularly important
11:13 AM roycroft: i could number them sequentially by date of acquisition, and that would be fine
11:13 AM roycroft: although i do like a good classification system
11:13 AM jym: And I can transcode from FLAC to MP3 an entire album in 40 seconds if needed
11:14 AM roycroft: one of the great benefits of classifying media is discovery via opportunity
11:14 AM roycroft: i.e. you're looking for one thing, and you stumble upon related things that are shelved nearby
11:15 AM roycroft: i store all my media in lossless format
11:15 AM jym: Eventually I'll make a digital jukebox
11:15 AM roycroft: and my portable players can play lossless formats
11:15 AM roycroft: i rarely transcode to something lossy
11:16 AM jym: FLAC is lossless, and I'm able to create a "real" audio CD to play in devices that dont support MP3/FLAC
11:16 AM roycroft: archivist: for my books i use library of congress classification
11:16 AM roycroft: i spend more time in university libraries than public libraries, and loc is a lot more familiar to me than the dewey decimal system
11:17 AM archivist: I have all three main classifications if I bother
11:17 AM roycroft: and using it for my own collection makes it easy to catalog and classify - 95+% of my books already have loc classificaiton, so i can just look it up instead of having to hash it out myself
11:17 AM jym: That's way too much work! haha
11:17 AM archivist: if it it is in the book I have a field for it else left blank
11:17 AM roycroft: yes, i'm aware that flac is lossless
11:18 AM roycroft: i use itunes, which doesn't support flac, so i convert anything i get in flac to aac
11:18 AM roycroft: but i can trivially transcode it back to flac, to mp3 or ogg, or whatever
11:18 AM archivist: I tend to use dewy a bit more http://www.collection.archivist.info/searchv13.php?searchstr=621.833
11:19 AM roycroft: dewey is rather restrictive and quite anglo-centric
11:19 AM archivist: he was american!
11:19 AM roycroft: and not as familiar to me as loc
11:20 AM roycroft: anglo meaning language in this instance, not location
11:20 AM roycroft: i.e. foreign language literature is cumbersome to classify using dewey
11:21 AM archivist: so little foreign in mine
11:26 AM roycroft: i have a fair number of foreign language books
11:29 AM gloops: ally bits starting to arrive, fairly chunky spindle mounting, also 2 more t8 nuts that must have been in the post 6 weeks
11:30 AM gloops: ebay last hour 0.01 - .99 pence bids
11:31 AM roycroft: mcmaster-carr annoy me
11:31 AM roycroft: they ship instantly
11:31 AM roycroft: and half the time i order from them i remember something else i need within minutes of placing an order
11:31 AM roycroft: at which point it's too late to add on to the order
11:31 AM gloops: strange how some bits come quicker than youd think they could, others almost forgot about them
11:31 AM roycroft: weird thing to complain about, eh?
11:32 AM gloops: i dont care unless its holding something else up
11:32 AM gloops: its cheap
11:33 AM roycroft: i have a project that's complete except for an indicator, that got misdelivered
11:33 AM roycroft: the seller is stalling on dealing with the issue
11:33 AM roycroft: i finally just said i'd order another, and keep the first one if it ever arrives
11:33 AM roycroft: the seller wants to wait
11:34 AM roycroft: i don't care - it's a $6 part including shipping
11:35 AM roycroft: i don't get why people fuss over little things like that
11:36 AM gloops: yeah can be really annoying if you need it to carry on with something
11:36 AM roycroft: oh cool
11:37 AM roycroft: my yule present to myself is out for delivery today :)
11:37 AM roycroft: a huot s&d drill dispenser
11:37 AM roycroft: now the big drill bits will be organized
11:38 AM roycroft: and, more importantly, less prone to being damaged by banging into each other
11:50 AM gloops: i might be organised again one day
11:50 AM roycroft: i've been wanting to get more drill dispensers for years
11:51 AM roycroft: i have one for standard fractional drills, and one for large number drills
11:51 AM roycroft: the s&d one will be nice - it goes from 33/64" to 63/64"
11:51 AM anonnumberanon: i've noticed over the years that it is something you can get stressed over for a long time but that can actually be done in a few hours
11:51 AM roycroft: i don't know if i need the 1" to 1-1/2" one
11:51 AM roycroft: the only drill i have for that is a 1"
11:52 AM roycroft: but i do want to get the smaller number bit one and the letter bit one
11:52 AM roycroft: and probably a metric one as well
11:52 AM anonnumberanon: lately i think that since it takes so short to do, why did you stress about it so much, and there really wasn't any disorder
11:52 AM roycroft: then it will be time to start getting reamer dispensers
11:52 AM roycroft: the things are expensive is the real issue
11:52 AM roycroft: ~$100 each
11:53 AM roycroft: but tooling is also expensive, and deserves to be organized and protected
11:54 AM gloops: anonn i emptied my garage to board it out while was waiting for the screws and bearings for this machine build, they arrived a day or 2 before i was finished, the mistake i made was not returning everything in an orderly fashion, i just put stuff back quick and started making the machine lol
11:54 AM gloops: still in total chaos
11:55 AM roycroft: i'm getting better at keeping things organized
11:55 AM gloops: ive persuaded myself it will be better to do it when the machine is done now
11:55 AM roycroft: i have bins for all my fasteners, and have made a rule to check in and label new fasteners as they come into the shop
11:55 AM anonnumberanon: i have areas of things in the garage now
11:56 AM anonnumberanon: on the floor
11:56 AM roycroft: no just using what i need and stuffing the boxes with the remainder on a shelf for later classification
11:56 AM roycroft: i never use fasteners out of the box any more
11:56 AM roycroft: they have to go into a properly labeled bin first
11:57 AM * anonnumberanon labels roycroft
11:57 AM roycroft: i have several label makers, and label most things
11:58 AM roycroft: there is NOT, however, a label that says "label maker" attached to any of my label makers
11:58 AM archivist: why dont the dymo also print a barcode!
11:58 AM roycroft: i draw the line there
11:58 AM roycroft: my label makers will print barcodes
11:58 AM archivist: cheap ones dont
11:59 AM roycroft: i use brother p-touch for most things
11:59 AM roycroft: but i have a dymo dual media printer attached to my desktop workstation
11:59 AM roycroft: it can print postage as well
12:00 PM IchGucksLive: hi
12:04 PM roycroft: hallo
12:04 PM IchGucksLive: :-)
12:21 PM gloops: https://www.express.co.uk/news/world/891815/Brexit-trade-Germany-UK-economy-cars-Angela-Merkel
12:22 PM gloops: germany terrified..maybe slightly over stating things
12:29 PM IchGucksLive: the good drinks
12:30 PM roycroft: speaking of the good drinks
12:30 PM roycroft: i'm out of glḧwein
12:30 PM roycroft: i need to make another jug of it tonight
01:10 PM IchGucksLive: im off
01:24 PM anonnumberanon: How to choose cnc machine travel length, especially for z? I would like to be able to cut 1 inch thick things.
01:25 PM Tom_L: i based mine on materials i can get
01:27 PM CaptHindsight: anonnumberanon: 1"+ longest tool = Z
01:28 PM Tom_L: CaptHindsight, i figured out the weld issue
01:28 PM Tom_L: i did like the video though
01:29 PM CaptHindsight: saw the log
01:29 PM CaptHindsight: glad you have it working now
01:29 PM Tom_L: no more so than me :)
01:29 PM anonnumberanon: And by "tool" you mean the end mill, or the end mill plus the spindle?
01:30 PM Tom_L: stopped by the scrap to check, the old rusty 1/4" plate will be tossed... i found some brand new cutoffs just what i need today
01:31 PM Tom_L: i might try to get by the fastener place next day or so
01:31 PM Tom_L: tell me again what you're looking for..
01:31 PM Tom_L: 1/4" bolts about 3/4" long?
01:31 PM CaptHindsight: anonnumberanon: make a paper model in 2D, get some hands on and see
01:33 PM CaptHindsight: paper, scissors, pencil/pen, ruler (your choice inch or metric), crayons/markers optional
01:33 PM Tom_L: etch o sketch
01:33 PM CaptHindsight: try different length cutting tools
01:34 PM CaptHindsight: see if the spindle length matters
01:34 PM CaptHindsight: add clamps for material being cut, see how much clearance you need
01:38 PM gloops: wood or metal cutting anonn?
01:42 PM Tom_L: CaptHindsight you still need a source for buttonhead cap screws?
01:43 PM Tom_L: i didn't get a chance to go by there today but i'm sure i will in a day or so
01:43 PM gloops: the length of the z axis is critical for gantry style routers and so on
01:50 PM CaptHindsight: Tom_L: sure, if they have the flange (integrated washer)
01:51 PM CaptHindsight: Tom_L: today's TIG project https://imagebin.ca/v/3ka4VJr9SzSG
01:52 PM MarcelineVQ: the modern thin-walled marvel that is pulse welding
01:53 PM CaptHindsight: I'll do another quick sand/brush over all the seams and then clean with solvent before tacking it all in place
01:54 PM MarcelineVQ: did that get cancer and you're doing replacement or is it a mod? pretty common cancer spots is why I ask
01:54 PM CaptHindsight: if i TIG properly I'll have little grinding and sanding on the welds before primer
01:55 PM CaptHindsight: MarcelineVQ: yeah cancer, started out as a simple repaint and discovered more as it came apart
01:56 PM CaptHindsight: new rockers were $30, $100 for rust free arches from an Arizona bone yard
01:56 PM gloops: seems a very young car to need wheel arches
01:56 PM CaptHindsight: new fenders were $35ea
01:56 PM CaptHindsight: 01'
01:56 PM gloops: ahh
01:57 PM MarcelineVQ: bodywork is really impressive, I have a lot of trouble staying motivated for the repetative work that painting requires so people that can do it well are pretty amazing
01:58 PM CaptHindsight: so while it was apart, new front and rear suspension, brakes, lines, etc
01:58 PM CaptHindsight: bead blast rims and powdercoat
02:00 PM CaptHindsight: $100 for the set of leather seats and door panels
02:00 PM gloops: what car is it?
02:00 PM CaptHindsight: Maxima we got for cheap since it had an ECU problem
02:00 PM CaptHindsight: $25 ECU
02:02 PM CaptHindsight: MarcelineVQ: it takes lots of motivation, started last year :)
02:02 PM CaptHindsight: I used to restore old cars decades ago, no desire anymore
02:03 PM gloops: bodywork is ok if you dont need the vehicle, like if you can do a bit then leave it for a bit, do a bit more
02:04 PM CaptHindsight: more of a project for my son to see how much work it really is to do it right
02:04 PM Tom_L: fun project
02:04 PM MarcelineVQ: do you have a sandblaster yourself?
02:04 PM CaptHindsight: vs the one hour rebuild a car shows on TV
02:05 PM CaptHindsight: MarcelineVQ: for parts yeah, body gets sanded to metal
02:05 PM MarcelineVQ: that's always bugged me, used to watch that orange country chopper show and the only piece they'd ever show someone actually making was the gas tank, really suspicious
02:05 PM CaptHindsight: one of the car shows had a CNC mill and made their own wheels
02:06 PM MarcelineVQ: at least that boyd show you'd see the parts being made too
02:06 PM MarcelineVQ: especially sheet metal work, such skill
02:06 PM MarcelineVQ: little rounded wide hammer, tapping a sheet into the shape of a vehicle
02:07 PM MarcelineVQ: I think I have one of those hammers come to think of it
02:07 PM CaptHindsight: Chip Foose/Overhaulin
02:08 PM gloops: panel beating is a skill yes
02:09 PM CaptHindsight: https://youtu.be/gMt2WuHwjHM?t=57s Foose wheels in the cnc, trying to see what machine it is
02:09 PM SpeedEvil: english wheel/...++
02:09 PM CaptHindsight: Haas
02:10 PM gloops: nice wheels
02:11 PM CaptHindsight: I don't have the time to make all my own sheet metal parts
02:12 PM CaptHindsight: every panel for that car is so cheap
02:12 PM gloops: yeah panels are pretty cheap, thats where gas welding is useful - tacking and shaping with a bit of heat
02:13 PM gloops: another back street garage skill thats dying out i suppose
02:13 PM CaptHindsight: the body guys I talk to don't even weld that much anymore
02:13 PM CaptHindsight: they glue panels on
02:15 PM CaptHindsight: https://youtu.be/Aeure1g1XvY?t=1m48s 1/4 panel glue
02:15 PM roycroft: they probably use bondo to finish panels instead of lead too
02:15 PM gloops: not allowed here, well not in many areas of the vehicle, no tacking - must be continuous welding, nowhere near as much welding done on cars now
02:15 PM gloops: cars dont rot like they used to anyway
02:16 PM MarcelineVQ: that's becase they're half plastic
02:16 PM CaptHindsight: rust treatment is much better now
02:16 PM MarcelineVQ: there's plenty of rust to be had still where I live though
02:17 PM roycroft: cars don't rot here
02:17 PM roycroft: because we don't pour salt all over our roads
02:17 PM CaptHindsight: US cars from the 60-70's would last maybe 5 years around here before you could see into the trunk without opening it
02:17 PM roycroft: my '65 vw bus is virtually rust free
02:17 PM roycroft: as is my '74
02:18 PM gloops: Marcel well there is that yes, but the old cars only had a quick blast of bitumen underneath, soon turned into rotboxes, the new undersealing is much better
02:18 PM CaptHindsight: salt is everywhere here
02:19 PM gloops: rust was the #1 cause of vehicles being scrapped
02:19 PM roycroft: we use sand instead of salt
02:19 PM gloops: now its snapped timing belt
02:19 PM roycroft: but mostly, we just stay home when the roads are icy
02:19 PM CaptHindsight: the driver side rocker is always more rusty than the passenger side since the streets are crowned and you park drivers side to the curb
02:23 PM CaptHindsight: gloops: do they perform safety inspections there? None here locally
02:23 PM gloops: Capt vehicle inspection? like MOT - annual test
02:25 PM CaptHindsight: yes
02:25 PM CaptHindsight: https://c1.staticflickr.com/4/3242/2873475493_989f095dac_b.jpg street legal here, just like China
02:26 PM CaptHindsight: http://oddstuffmagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/SbR6Z-940x705.jpg
02:26 PM gloops: yeah, if you have an old car a bloke gets it on the lift and goes all over the bottom with a little ice pick and chips out all the filler and gunge and paint you stuffed into the chassis heh
02:27 PM gloops: not legal here
02:28 PM gloops: there are a lot of cut and shove jobs here
02:28 PM CaptHindsight: https://c1.staticflickr.com/8/7139/6919802010_71e0dfe9cc_b.jpg
02:28 PM MarcelineVQ: around here it's all legal until a cop gets bored or is having a bad day :>
02:29 PM CaptHindsight: gloops: the car shows on TV were doing similar, bondo everywhere
02:29 PM gregcnc: you can get the same effect with vinyl wraps
02:29 PM gregcnc: http://s3files.core77.com/blog/images/307494_81_38703_UGWPzgKo7.jpg
02:30 PM MarcelineVQ: gregcnc: :(
02:30 PM anonnumberanon: CaptHindsight, I'll do my model in cad with Mcmaher-carr parts
02:31 PM CaptHindsight: https://i.pinimg.com/736x/23/2f/fd/232ffdaca98d8a47025b92ecaa33d579--redneck-party-funny-images.jpg
02:32 PM CaptHindsight: car repair tape :)
02:32 PM gloops: dealers trick at the auctions - carry a magnet - the perfect paint job isnt always what it seems
02:32 PM CaptHindsight: was the old way
02:33 PM gregcnc: https://imgur.com/gallery/YUSTIX8
02:38 PM CaptHindsight: heard the police were ticketing for car wraps that are too colorful
02:38 PM gregcnc: but it's probably ok as long as it's advertising?
02:39 PM gloops: hmm, you stand out a lot, cant quite place it but you must be doing something wrong
02:39 PM anonnumberanon: CaptHindsight, they also ticket people for just being too colorful in the US
02:39 PM anonnumberanon: :)
02:39 PM gloops: how do cops decide which cars they should pull over?
02:40 PM gloops: a rusty old wreck - got to be a target, but then again, would he really drive around in that if it werent legal
02:40 PM gregcnc: IDK, how?
02:40 PM gloops: i dont know either gregcnc
02:41 PM gregcnc: somewhere between letter of the law and profiling
02:41 PM gregcnc: just like anything lese
02:41 PM gregcnc: oh and cellphones around here
02:41 PM gregcnc: saw someone get pulled over while on their phone the other day
02:41 PM gloops: thats a ticket here, might even be a ban
02:42 PM anonnumberanon: defective signal lights and headlight and taillights, not using signals, not making full stops at stop signs and lights, will give them a good reason to stop you, then they will hope there is more to add onto the ticket, some of them sit there at intersection and simply run your plate for expired registration or inspection or insurance or driver's licence, or warrants, which would ruin your day
02:43 PM anonnumberanon: don't do any of the above and you should be fine
02:43 PM gregcnc: those are basically example of things they don't stop for around here
02:43 PM gloops: thats another thing yeah, number plate scanning, the cops dont do jack sht now they just ride rounding flashing plates
02:44 PM gloops: driving a motorcycle is good reason to be stopped
02:44 PM anonnumberanon: gregcnc, where? let me come live there
02:45 PM anonnumberanon: this is why as an active cocaine dealer and a weekend serial killer i keep my vehicle in top condition at all times
02:45 PM anonnumberanon: giggidy
02:46 PM gloops: no tax test or insurance - vehicle goes to the pound
02:49 PM gregcnc: They'll bother to stop you for those things if they think they can get you on something else
02:52 PM gloops: i think the average cop is too bored to get serious over minor infringements, they hand pick certain types to do that, most of them want a car that puts the foot down when they flash him
02:53 PM CaptHindsight: they brought some police from the UK over here to consult on what is going wrong
02:53 PM gloops: then they get chance to to play in their subaru imprezas
02:54 PM CaptHindsight: their main concern was that there is no psychological evaluations and that the new recruits had profiles just like the criminals
02:54 PM CaptHindsight: shoot first
02:55 PM gregcnc: I was hoping 0.5mm section o rings would be more common
02:55 PM gloops: lol Capt
02:58 PM CaptHindsight: anonnumberanon: are you building a gantry mill/router?
03:00 PM gloops: how come subaru can do this with a 2.5 litre - the yanks cant do it with 5 litres - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MsKaGC7Y84E
03:01 PM gloops: subaru have only been making cars for 5 minutes
03:02 PM CaptHindsight: burn baby burn
03:03 PM CaptHindsight: and just make it bigger
03:04 PM anonnumberanon: yes CaptHindsight
03:04 PM CaptHindsight: gloops: well you really don't need that, but....
03:05 PM gloops: i would never drive at those speeds but i do like the feel of power in an engine
03:06 PM CaptHindsight: it just comes down to profit here
03:07 PM CaptHindsight: they make and sell whatever makes a buck with no concern to the environment, efficiency etc
03:07 PM gloops: anonn - the z axis travel is critical with a moving gantry set up
03:07 PM CaptHindsight: I lost my enthusiasm for cars when the speed limit dropped to 55 mph
03:08 PM CaptHindsight: it's back up again but you really can't drive your supercar anywhere here
03:08 PM CaptHindsight: there is no autobahn
03:08 PM gloops: i lost mine when my insurance went up to 2k
03:09 PM CaptHindsight: so people tend to end up with speeding tickets or spinning tires, smoke etc
03:09 PM CaptHindsight: some people pay the few $k per year and the tickets
03:10 PM CaptHindsight: they say it's just the cost of being able to drive they way they want
03:11 PM CaptHindsight: cars for me now is more about reliability
03:12 PM gloops: same here, affordable reliable motoring, i mean not so cheap my knees are stuck under my chin, but not bothered about anything big or fancy
03:14 PM CaptHindsight: I'll spend a few days a year rebuilding an engine, rear end etc and easily get >500K miles if the body doesn't rot
03:15 PM gloops: 500k is a lot
03:18 PM CaptHindsight: I'd still be driving cars from the 60's it it wasn't for our salted roads
03:25 PM roycroft: i guess salting roads is good for at least something :)
03:26 PM gloops: is a 12 tooth timing pulley enough for cnc?
03:27 PM gloops: i mean enough teeth to ensure no backlash issues
03:30 PM CaptHindsight: gloops 1cm dia?
03:31 PM gloops: nah 5mm pitch, the pulley is about 2 cm diameter
03:31 PM CaptHindsight: what does ichs say : 4 or more or go to the store
03:32 PM gloops: Ichs knows his stuff, but i have serious doubts about 12 teeth, its squeaking when i pull the belt
03:32 PM CaptHindsight: what pitch belt?
03:33 PM gloops: only reason i ask - ive got 2 sets of quality pulleys and belts, with 12 tooth the smallest, ive also got bigger pulleys but no belts for them, i really ought to buy the belts for the bigger pulleys
03:33 PM gloops: its T5 - 5mm pitch

03:39 PM CaptHindsight: gloops: step 4 https://us.misumi-ec.com/pdf/tech/mech/p2823.pdf
03:45 PM anonnumberanon: could this be modified to connect a parallel port? https://newyork.craigslist.org/que/sys/d/hp-t5730-thin-client/6423284261.html
03:47 PM cradek: anonnumberanon: you'd probably want to use an ethernet-connected device
03:49 PM gloops: well im 2 teeth short going by that Capt heh
03:49 PM gloops: that is most useful info ive seen though
03:52 PM gloops: anonnumberanon consider that your tool/z axis acts like a crow bar on your Y rails/beam
03:52 PM gloops: longer the z travel, more the leverage, and it does matter, steel sections bend like toffee
04:00 PM anonnumberanon: ok so shortest possible travel is better
04:03 PM XXCoder: cowboy roy moore don't know how to ride a horse.
04:04 PM Deejay: gn8
04:10 PM gloops: wellthe amount of travel depends on your requirements, i mean if you need 200mm you need 200mm
04:10 PM MarcelineVQ: anonnumberanon: your travel needs to be able to clear your clamps while holding a tool, so what that means for you will depends on the maximum material thickness you want to have and the clamping method
04:10 PM gloops: so you have to design your gantry to suit
04:11 PM anonnumberanon: the minimum travel on the parts that we can find for sale is 15 cm right?
04:12 PM gloops: the bearing spacing is an important factor, the wider apart the horizontal bearings on the Y axis the more the leverage is displaced
04:12 PM gloops: as a general rule, the y bearing spacing distance should be no less than the z travel
04:12 PM anonnumberanon: i think that's what I've seen, so I sould need let's say 2 inches of tables and clamping stuff under my material, then 1 inch of material, then one inch on top of the material to have space to pull it out, then maybe 3 more inches to be able to change the end mill
04:12 PM gloops: so 8 inch travel, 8 inch between bearing rails
04:13 PM anonnumberanon: ah that's a rule of thumb?
04:13 PM gloops: yes
04:13 PM anonnumberanon: tysm :)
04:14 PM gloops: that also applies to the distance between z axis vertical bearings
04:14 PM MarcelineVQ: If you're wanting to stay tight you can move the router to a specific spot for toolchanges, like a corner of the table that's notched out for changes. If that extra height is just for changing and not functional otherwise
04:14 PM gloops: go wide where poss
04:14 PM anonnumberanon: gloops, we WERE talking about z axis
04:14 PM anonnumberanon: did you mean another axis?
04:14 PM anonnumberanon: ahhh, sorry haha
04:14 PM gloops: yes we were talking about the effect the z axis has on the y axis
04:14 PM anonnumberanon: yeah i got it now
04:15 PM gloops: you cant just go placing these things willy nilly you know
04:15 PM anonnumberanon: i know
04:16 PM anonnumberanon: i was thinking at first place the rails as far apart as possibl
04:16 PM anonnumberanon: e
04:16 PM gloops: always
04:17 PM gloops: now, tests show that a single large section bends less than 2 seperate sections, so thats something else to consider
04:18 PM gloops: the moving gantry, structurally is a terrible design
04:18 PM MarcelineVQ: do you have a specific example of what you mean by seperate sections?
04:18 PM gloops: like 2 Y rails
04:18 PM gloops: as opposed to 1 rail, or beam
04:19 PM anonnumberanon: yeah i know what you mean
04:19 PM roycroft: it seems to me that a moving table would be easier to make accurate than a moving gantry
04:19 PM gloops: if you use 1 8x2 section, it bends less than 2 4x2 sections
04:19 PM roycroft: the drawback being that it requires more real estate
04:19 PM MarcelineVQ: My first design so far is a moving table in x and gantry/arch in y
04:19 PM anonnumberanon: so i guess with 2 y rails, the rails would be really really far apart so that's better, and also some flex would be removed
04:20 PM MarcelineVQ: Mostly because it's easier to construct badly while getting okay results, a floppy sliding gantry isn't easy to de-slop the first time around
04:21 PM gloops: if you use 2 rails space them well apart yes, i mean if they are strong enough to take the forces then its ok, but spreading the force is also good for the bearings themselves, which also deflect
04:22 PM gloops: i made a router with 300mm z and 2 rails 6 inch apart - from heavy steel tube, bends with a light finger push
04:23 PM jesseg: I was thinking that if I convert my lathe to CNC I might take off the thread cutting cross slide and put on a CNC rotator so the lathe but can be CNC changed to cut the side of a cylinder or the face of the end, or whatever. I guess I could mount 4 tools on four sides so it could actually have different tools or drills as well
04:26 PM gloops: like a cnc toolpost?
04:26 PM jesseg: oh yeah!
04:26 PM MarcelineVQ: a tool turret? they're darn cool. why add a motor to the cross-slide though, don't most cnc lathes do way with the cross-slide because it can control the depth of cut and create the angle?
04:26 PM jesseg: that sounds like what I had in mind!
04:26 PM MarcelineVQ: *do away
04:27 PM jesseg: MarcelineVQ, yeah exactly. If I remove the compound cross slide, it'll give me more vertical spaces to mount a CNC turret
04:28 PM MarcelineVQ: Oh you meant that, I didn't quite follow what you said I guess hehe
04:29 PM jesseg: actually, I tried, but I see I missed or goofed a word, so it was confusing :P
04:30 PM gloops: happy with a motor holding the tool still?
04:32 PM jesseg: I might use a oversized harmonic drive
04:32 PM jesseg: if I wanted dynamic action. Otherwise there could be a powerful break.
04:34 PM MarcelineVQ: there's cycloidal drives too which are so darn cool. dunno about using them on a lathe though, vibration might translate to the finish, bears more looking into
05:08 PM anonnumberanon: the heavy hardware around the tiny end mill makes me think of this scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysb-TwA7JCQ
05:09 PM JT-Shop: hmm an off delay timer and an on delay timer is $125... a PLC is $79
05:13 PM malcom2073: I never understood why Arthur didn't seem distressed in that scene
05:13 PM malcom2073: iirc from the book, he was in just as much pain as Ford
05:14 PM MarcelineVQ: hmm? as I recall he liked it
05:14 PM malcom2073: I'll have to re-read the book, good reason!
05:14 PM MarcelineVQ: read them all while you're at it, good times
05:14 PM malcom2073: I have the big book collection
05:16 PM malcom2073: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A8JJH7ZL_Fk
05:16 PM malcom2073: In thatone he's not happy
05:16 PM malcom2073: heh
05:19 PM MarcelineVQ: maybe he was pretending to like it, been a long time since I've read it, could have misses context back then hehe
05:19 PM MarcelineVQ: *missed
05:23 PM MarcelineVQ: I'd like a black shirt that has the sillhouette of a bird that is actually a starry sky that says PANIC :> you can find don't panic without even trying
05:26 PM JT-Shop: lol two pullets bullied Henry out of his spot on the roost
05:31 PM MarcelineVQ: poor guy, hopefully he won't turn into a jerk when he grows up
05:32 PM JT-Shop: he's a stud in the chicken yard
06:14 PM MarcelineVQ: gosh, tool-holding magnets sure are strong these days
07:35 PM andypugh: Arthur Dent found the Vogon Poetry perfectly bearable due to having done English O-level as I recall.
07:36 PM andypugh: The book explains. The film, as always, can’t.
07:43 PM malcom2073: That indeed does sound familiar
07:43 PM malcom2073: Definently need to go read i again
07:43 PM malcom2073: it*
08:17 PM skunkworks: oh - how I miss douglas adams..
08:17 PM skunkworks: I would have liked more dirk gently books
08:18 PM skunkworks: My favorite quote '"There is an art to flying, or rather a knack. The knack lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. ... Clearly, it is this second part, the missing, that presents the difficulties."
