12:10 AM dave__ is now known as gloopsr
12:24 AM gloopsr: https://buildyourcnc.com/Item/axes-4th
12:25 AM XXCoder: gloopsr: wow. that website background sucks
12:30 AM gloopsr: i think thats a simple indexing axis, stepper motor, what im not see is why a lathe cant be done like that?
12:32 AM XXCoder: way too slow
12:33 AM gloopsr: with a bigger motor and maybe up gearing
12:33 AM XXCoder: nah basically cant make stepper based lathe
12:34 AM XXCoder: you need a real servo or motor
12:34 AM gloopsr: well a servo then, so youre saying its just a matter of power, not positioning
12:34 AM Kevin`: steppers lose torque pretty quickly at high speed
12:35 AM Wolf__: lathe isnt built to spin things with no backlash when reversing
12:35 AM Kevin`: that said, if you already *have* one of those for a little mill, try it with a lathe tool why not
12:36 AM XXCoder: gloopsr: yeah stepper goes down on torque very fast. too fast to be usable
12:36 AM Wolf__: I bet that 4th axis in that link sucks as well
12:36 AM gloopsr: what about a servo
12:37 AM Wolf__: most people that DIY a 4th for a mill use a harmonic drive gear box
12:38 AM gloopsr: it seems a lot of messing about to make an encoder or expensive to buy one, when a servo already has one
12:38 AM gloopsr: an encoder costs more than a servo and driver
12:39 AM Wolf__: $75 for a encoder
12:39 AM Kevin`: encoders can be had as cheap as you want
12:39 AM gloopsr: where?
12:39 AM Wolf__: encoder store...
12:39 AM XXCoder: I saw one guy make 4th axis. was interesting
12:39 AM Kevin`: lol
12:39 AM XXCoder: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmOnktzifeg I think
12:39 AM * Wolf__ is looking for link..
12:40 AM Kevin`: here's another random one in addition to the link from before https://www.amazon.com/Signswise-Incremental-Encoder-Dc5-24v-Voltage/dp/B00UTIFCVA/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1512369566&sr=8-3&keywords=rotary+encoder
12:41 AM Wolf__: https://www.usdigital.com/products/encoders/incremental/rotary/kit/E3
12:41 AM Wolf__: goggle showed one of those for $37 when I searched it
12:42 AM gloopsr: ok just trying to get my head round this
12:43 AM gloopsr: i buy an encoder like that, it sends a signal, linuxcnc takes the signal from a pin on the BOB?
12:43 AM Wolf__: best 4th axis setup IMO is servo on a harmonic drive gear box
12:43 AM Wolf__: no, BOB can’t process the info fast enough, need a mesa board to read the encoders
12:43 AM gloopsr: why cant i do the gearing with timing belts?
12:44 AM Wolf__: backlash/slop/non-solid holding
12:44 AM Kevin`: you can. harmonic drive has more torque
12:44 AM Wolf__: well, you can, depends on what you expect for results lol
12:45 AM gloopsr: see it isnt so simple as sticking a few steppers on an old lathe
12:45 AM gloopsr: i need encoder, mesa card, harmonic gearbox
12:45 AM Wolf__: I still need to find a damn lead screw for my lathe…
12:45 AM Kevin`: don't need encoders for a stepper
12:45 AM Contract_Pilot: What size lathe
12:46 AM Contract_Pilot: Wolf
12:46 AM Wolf__: 1237
12:46 AM gloopsr: theres a very small lathe near me for cheap, 10 inch centres
12:46 AM Contract_Pilot: Need a factory lead screw?
12:46 AM Contract_Pilot: What axis?
12:46 AM gloopsr: but if its going to cost 500 quid to cnc its not worth bothering with
12:46 AM Wolf__: 7/8”-8tpi by 47” round about
12:47 AM Wolf__: the damn threading lead…
12:47 AM Wolf__: I think the one off a G0925 grizzly might work
12:48 AM gloopsr: https://www.accu.co.uk/en/517-precision-lead-screws-and-nuts
12:48 AM Wolf__: shipping to the USA might make ordering from UK a bad pick lol
12:48 AM Contract_Pilot: http://www.stevenrhine.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/6D4CDF47-9A9C-4075-A15F-D76F9419C075-1024x768.jpeg
12:49 AM Contract_Pilot: I have some take offs
12:50 AM Wolf__: lol figures, have to see what size you have
12:50 AM Contract_Pilot: off a 12X36
12:50 AM Wolf__: what machine?
12:50 AM Contract_Pilot: Birmingham Asian like the Grizzly 4003
12:51 AM Contract_Pilot: http://www.stevenrhine.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/6D4CDF47-9A9C-4075-A15F-D76F9419C075.jpeg
12:51 AM Wolf__: any idea what thread pitch is on it
12:51 AM Contract_Pilot: Larger Image
12:52 AM Contract_Pilot: Nope what ever comes on the factory asian 12X lathes
12:52 AM Wolf__: lol
12:52 AM Wolf__: seems most of the tiawan lathes are 7/8”-8tpi
12:53 AM Contract_Pilot: I will pull it down from the attic and measure it.
12:53 AM Contract_Pilot: May take me a few days.
12:53 AM Wolf__: no rush, wont have the lathe here for another week probably
12:56 AM Wolf__: dont happen to have the change gears off the back of it as well?
12:56 AM archivist: that 4th axis is effin pricey for the crappy construction
12:56 AM Contract_Pilot: Nope i sold off most everything from the conversion
12:56 AM XXCoder: archivist: one in video or store link?
12:56 AM Wolf__: damn, least those shouldn’t be too hard to source, 1.25mm pitch gears
12:56 AM archivist: store link
12:56 AM gloopsr: its crap for the money
12:56 AM archivist: add a stepper to https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PRECISION-ROTARY-TABLE-HV6-FOR-MILLING-MACHINE/371832857651
12:56 AM XXCoder: and thats still cheaper
12:56 AM XXCoder: jeez
12:56 AM Wolf__: that store link 4th would be cheaper to buy a taig lathe head lol
12:57 AM gloopsr: this is fine for indexing
12:57 AM Wolf__: or maybe the whole taig lathe and add a stepper lol
12:57 AM gloopsr: the stepper is only providing the feed rate , the spindle is giving the cutting force
12:58 AM Contract_Pilot: http://www.stevenrhine.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/My-CNC-12X36-Lathe-1024x576.jpg
12:58 AM archivist: I used one of those rotaries http://www.collection.archivist.info/archive/DJCPD/PD/2009/2009_05_26_cnc/IMG_0248.JPG
12:58 AM Wolf__: except that the stepper on a 4th axis that is belt drive (not worm geared) also has to resist cutting forces
12:58 AM gloopsr: im pretty confident i can make a rotary indexer with a stepper
12:59 AM gloopsr: Wolf - could use chain
12:59 AM archivist: use a worm rotary to stop reverse drive
12:59 AM Wolf__: ^ that
12:59 AM Wolf__: Contract_Pilot: nice
12:59 AM gloopsr: probably doesnt even matter for wood
12:59 AM archivist: and the worm in those at 90:1 id quite good
01:00 AM Contract_Pilot: my 4th axis still n eed to get or make a cover for the wires http://www.stevenrhine.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/IMG_5258-1024x768.jpg
01:00 AM Contract_Pilot: Wolf i have some 3phase steppers on the way from china to replace them old ones
01:01 AM Wolf__: https://i.imgur.com/WjcmWDV.jpg looks similar
01:01 AM Contract_Pilot: they are due in any day next week
01:01 AM archivist: quality of reduction matters if gear making
01:01 AM Wolf__: ish...
01:01 AM Contract_Pilot: Yep.
01:02 AM Contract_Pilot: Sucks no one sharing pathpilot 2.0 yet need a bordom cure
01:02 AM Wolf__: at least the only thing that is missing is the thread dial, 3 of the gears and the threading lead
01:02 AM gloopsr: archivist im planning to use timing belt on x and y axis to increase gearing, gantry weighs about 100lbs or more, im stuffed if timing belts cant hack it haha
01:03 AM gloopsr: but everyone else uses them
01:03 AM IchGucksLive: hi
01:03 AM IchGucksLive: gloopsr: timing belt is the best to go
01:04 AM IchGucksLive: i have only the large ones without
01:04 AM gloopsr: it is slightly different using belt from motor to screw though, the screw provides a gear reduction
01:04 AM IchGucksLive: so maybe 10 out of 400
01:05 AM IchGucksLive: it gives a better precision Step Speed
01:05 AM IchGucksLive: as 400/5 is 1,25
01:05 AM archivist: gloopsr, my comments today are about rotaries not x/y
01:05 AM IchGucksLive: as well as 20/25
01:05 AM IchGucksLive: is also 1,25
01:05 AM IchGucksLive: so step is 0,01
01:05 AM gloopsr: well its going on Ichs, if its no good, ill just take them off, and go slower
01:05 AM Contract_Pilot: Ill call tormach tomarrow see if they will sell me 2.0 flash drive sheesh!
01:06 AM gloopsr: archivist yes, but im just trying to compare the force needed to hold a rotary, and the force the belts on x and y encounter
01:06 AM IchGucksLive: archivist: i calculate the rotary on the max diameter at 0,01
01:06 AM Contract_Pilot: All i need is another flash drive arround here like measuring tapes
01:06 AM Wolf__: I need to finish prepping the space for the machines I’m getting
01:07 AM Contract_Pilot: Wold i am not done with my space yet
01:07 AM Contract_Pilot: Wolf
01:07 AM gloopsr: if a timing belt can hold a 100lb gantry being thrown from one end to the other, they should have a chance of holding a rotary
01:07 AM Wolf__: this is temp, my house is still torn apart lol
01:07 AM archivist: calculation does not tell you the rotary error in position, it can be much worse than expected
01:08 AM Contract_Pilot: http://www.stevenrhine.com/?p=1990
01:08 AM gloopsr: so even with a stepper you still need an encoder archivist?
01:09 AM gloopsr: saying 1 step = 1.8 degrees isnt good enough?
01:09 AM archivist: gloopsr, we had gears returned, when we measured and found the cause it was an eye opener, it was from crap rotary worm and wheel variation
01:10 AM Wolf__: Contract_Pilot: yeah saw some of your FB posts of the remodel
01:11 AM IchGucksLive: archivist: agrees
01:11 AM Contract_Pilot: My Spindle Encoder for the lathe http://www.stevenrhine.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/IMG_5272-1024x768.jpg
01:12 AM archivist: must take some pics of one of the reject gears
01:12 AM IchGucksLive: archivist: but depending on part it will be a goodoutcome as seen here with 1deg error i got on the 20USD Rotary https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sqx9w80diKo
01:12 AM Contract_Pilot: http://www.stevenrhine.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/IMG_5271-1024x768.jpg
01:12 AM archivist: a high count gear shows up errors a lot more than a coarse gear
01:13 AM archivist: 1 degree is awful for a fine pitch gear
01:13 AM Wolf__: interesting encoder setup
01:14 AM IchGucksLive: archivist: Why not going this Way https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQfuBVLE3tY
01:14 AM archivist: IchGucksLive, how many time do I have to say I cannot see videos on this browser
01:15 AM IchGucksLive: ok
01:15 AM IchGucksLive: so a Fullsize Servo
01:15 AM archivist: IchGucksLive, and its not me making one at the moment
01:16 AM IchGucksLive: ok
01:16 AM archivist: you do get the wrong end of the stick
01:16 AM IchGucksLive: as always
01:16 AM Contract_Pilot: Never got anything done today
01:16 AM Contract_Pilot: I try and do 1 thing a day min.....
01:17 AM IchGucksLive: archivist: thas yopu are envolved in Heeks the new branch dioes not load cxf at all on 14.04
01:20 AM archivist: heaks is about dead, dan never comes into his channel
01:20 AM IchGucksLive: he is in the dessert for 2 years
01:20 AM IchGucksLive: as i have been in the forestr
01:20 AM IchGucksLive: its a livetime projekt
01:21 AM IchGucksLive: archivist: are you involved in PATH 2
01:21 AM IchGucksLive: of Freecad
01:21 AM IchGucksLive: from sliptronic
01:22 AM IchGucksLive: He also is on its own (Best to Go) not involving others
01:23 AM IchGucksLive: no answer on any mail or post
01:23 AM archivist: no
01:39 AM archivist: gloopsr, by the way I started writing up worm errors, using linuxcnc as both moving the rotary and measuring the resultant move http://www.archivist.info/cnc/wormtest/
01:42 AM gloopsr: so the stepper is near enough, the gearing causes the problems
01:43 AM gloopsr: at a glance
01:44 AM archivist: yes basically
01:45 AM archivist: but also some expect more accuracy from the stepper using microstepping
01:45 AM Contract_Pilot: Wow can really feel the draft from this sliding aluminum door now that the single pane windows have been replaced
01:45 AM XXCoder: Contract_Pilot: isnt double better?
01:46 AM Contract_Pilot: Rooms the heater not all 24/7 now
01:46 AM archivist: replace with plastic/wooden door with some insulation
01:46 AM Contract_Pilot: it is a 6' patio door
01:47 AM gloopsr: should have draught stoppers - like fine bristle inserts that fit in a track round the meeting faces of the door
01:47 AM archivist: aluminium and iron window frames worst idea ever :)
01:47 AM archivist: the al ic conducting the cold
01:47 AM MarcelineVQ: especially since they have draft holes in them by design
01:47 AM archivist: ic/is
01:47 AM MarcelineVQ: the alu at least
01:48 AM XXCoder: why woulkd there be dfraft holes
01:48 AM gloopsr: we had the old crittle iron windows in a house ages ago, shocking cold
01:48 AM archivist: the draft holes are sometimes in the building code
01:48 AM gloopsr: it was colder inside than outside
01:48 AM Contract_Pilot: Yea, still need to replace the seal on the wood stove
01:48 AM gloopsr: put xmas trimmings up on ceiling they were blowing about, balloons bouncing off the wall
01:49 AM archivist: what you really want is heat exchanging ventilation and close up all the draft points
01:51 AM gloopsr: should do what ted moult used to do in the old everest ads - go round the windows with a lighter flame, youll see the draughts
01:51 AM Deejay: moin
01:52 AM archivist: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heat_recovery_ventilation
01:52 AM archivist: did they ever find out why he blew his brains out
01:54 AM XXCoder: cheap exchanger https://handmadematt.blogspot.com/2015/01/heat-recovery-ventilation-heat.html
02:03 AM gloopsr: archivist probably sick of eating turkey
02:03 AM archivist: it was(is?) a pick your own farm
02:03 AM gloopsr: oh no that was bernard matthews lol
02:04 AM archivist: still is
02:04 AM archivist: http://scaddowsfarm.co.uk/
02:05 AM gloopsr: well bbl
02:08 AM XXCoder: archivist: depression can exist on its own sadly
04:09 AM XXCoder: there is species called air pototo. lol
04:10 AM XXCoder: invasive species
04:10 AM XXCoder: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQUXGviyzTI
04:27 AM Contract_Pilot: So For the lathe BOB to make it simple thinking of a C10 and a C41
04:28 AM Contract_Pilot: Wire it like the Slant Pro pinout in the HAL
04:42 AM jthornton: morning
04:42 AM XXCoder: hey
04:44 AM Contract_Pilot: Morning
05:08 AM Contract_Pilot: http://www.stevenrhine.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/lcnc-pins.jpg
05:09 AM Contract_Pilot: Trying to figure out a BOB that can go pin for pin or darn close to it. Thjat way only have to do very liuttle configuration.
05:14 AM XXCoder: what for?
05:14 AM XXCoder: its designed to be very configurable
05:25 AM Contract_Pilot: # used to decode the signal from the lathe control board that encodes
05:25 AM Contract_Pilot: # the door and limit switches as a frequency
05:25 AM Contract_Pilot: loadrt freq2pin personality=0x0004
05:25 AM Contract_Pilot: setp freq2pin.0.freq-width 200
05:25 AM Contract_Pilot: setp freq2pin.0.input 0
05:26 AM Contract_Pilot: Looks like all the pins are standard but pin 16
05:31 AM Contract_Pilot: Could Loose the probe on pin 13 and make limits and door on pin 13
05:31 AM Contract_Pilot: lot less editing
06:33 AM IchGucksLive: hi
06:33 AM IchGucksLive: Contract_Pilot: still on
07:03 AM Contract_Pilot: yep
07:04 AM IchGucksLive: there is a simple 5USD bob
07:36 AM Contract_Pilot: SF Express 5 days ummmm nope still in hongkong sheesh
10:20 AM SpeedEvil: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IVBGdpJjZWg how not to cast low porosity copper
10:25 AM Contract_Pilot: Looks like PP 2.0 this week from the e-mail ib just recived.
11:42 AM miss0r: goodevening
11:44 AM Contract_Pilot: morning
11:45 AM miss0r: I had a bad pizza this evening. Going all the way out into the shop is a dangerous gamble at the moment
11:57 AM IchGucksLive: hi
11:57 AM IchGucksLive: miss0r: why dident you make your own
11:57 AM IchGucksLive: faster to wait for
11:58 AM miss0r: yeah, it was for lunch
11:58 AM roycroft: i don't believe in bad pizza
11:59 AM roycroft: fortunately, we have a number of choices of really good pizza here
11:59 AM miss0r: yeah, this number will be removed from my list
12:02 PM IchGucksLive: miss0r: is there snow up there
12:02 PM IchGucksLive: icy roads here
12:03 PM roycroft: our warming centers are going to be open for the first night of the season tonight
12:03 PM roycroft: so it's definitely getting cold
12:03 PM roycroft: it's rather late for the first night of warming centers though
12:03 PM roycroft: usually that occurs in early- to mid-november
12:10 PM dave_: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Tamiya-72001-Planetary-Gear-Box-Set-w-RE260-Motor/112672456526?
12:10 PM dave_ is now known as gloops
12:11 PM IchGucksLive: gloops: use the nhk ones
12:11 PM gloops: just saw that one, might be useful for someone in the states
12:11 PM gloops: looks cheap atm
12:11 PM IchGucksLive: or if you can afford the ST90
12:13 PM gloops: not seeing st90 anywhere
12:15 PM gloops: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Nema23-Stepper-Motor-Planetary-Gearbox-Ratio-5-1-10-1-20-1-30-1-50-1-CNC-Reducer/201719542750?
12:17 PM IchGucksLive: gloops: search ebay Neugart
12:35 PM IchGucksLive: DocHopper: brass hopping
12:36 PM IchGucksLive: DocHopper: as spindle syncronised
12:37 PM DocHopper: Huh?
12:37 PM IchGucksLive: DocHopper: dont care
12:50 PM miss0r: IchGucksLive: No snow here. but we do have some ice on the roads
12:50 PM miss0r: I just ordered generic chinesium for 1250 eur :]
12:50 PM miss0r: Better be worth it
12:52 PM gloops: what was that for miss0r?
12:53 PM miss0r: multifix tool post, with 10 tool holders, some inserts, a 0.001mm dial indicator & a 2 axis dro
12:53 PM miss0r: lathe needs an upgrade :)
12:54 PM DocHopper: IchGucksLive: Should I know what you're talking about?
12:55 PM gloops: seems expensive
12:57 PM miss0r: I thought I got alot for my money to be honnest :)
12:58 PM miss0r: I didn't go full chinesium thou, perhaps that is why ;)
01:00 PM gloops: hmm, was thinking, china would sell you a 5ft cnc lathe for 1250 lol
01:00 PM miss0r: yeah, but that would be shitty bang bang
01:01 PM miss0r: Not all cnc is good. I would not be able to do the stuff I do without a cnc mill, for example. But I very much regret not having the room to fit in a manual mill as well
01:07 PM SpeedEvil: Fake handwheels. The next big thing!
01:13 PM jym: SpeedEvil: Like tires instead of wheels?
01:13 PM SpeedEvil: I mean manual-CNC
01:13 PM jym: ah
01:14 PM sync: SpeedEvil: with servos as the handwheel it should actually be ok
01:14 PM SpeedEvil: yeah. Force feedback would do good things for proper CNC too
01:14 PM IchGucksLive: Gn8
01:34 PM chopper791: Hello.... needing to hook up a light that turns red when there is any activity on the machine. Example would be red light would be off when the machine is on but idle. Then if any command is issued the light will turn red. These commands would include mdi, spindle, jogging, tool change, mpg, etc. So basically if the machine is just on but sitting there and doing nothing the red light is off and once any actiity happens the red light turns on. So my que
01:34 PM chopper791: I did not see anything in HALUI that seemed like it woul dbe what I was looking for.
01:37 PM chopper791: Was going to use halui.program.is-idle but that only works when a program is running.
01:43 PM chopper791: or not running I should say
01:43 PM cradek: you will probably want to OR some things together
01:44 PM JT-Shop: look in the motion pins
01:44 PM cradek: there won't be one existing pin that does what you want
01:44 PM cradek: I suggest also adding a siren that goes WOOP WOOP WOOP
01:44 PM JT-Shop: lol
01:44 PM cradek: like a prius in reverse
01:45 PM chopper791: hmm.... sirens
01:48 PM roycroft: beware of sirens
01:48 PM roycroft: they will enchangt you and you will crash
01:50 PM chopper791: Did not see anything in motion that would be more or less useful then what HALUI offers for this function. Good suggestion JT-Shop: I appreciate it. Also cradek: you were correct not one single pin to do it. I will have to OR a spindle pin and the program-idle pin together to make sure the red light is atleast on when the spindle is either rotating or program is running. Seems safe enough that way. Also I will think about the siren a bit more...haha
01:51 PM roycroft: try not to think about them - that's how they lure you in
01:51 PM roycroft: think about something icky like dead bunnies when you hear a siren's call
01:52 PM chopper791: lol..dead bunnies when I hear a siren?
01:53 PM JT-Shop: booting up the CHNC to see what I used for the lube pump
01:54 PM gloops: just tie a bit of string to the z and the other end round your toe, anything moves - you wake up
01:55 PM JT-Shop: chopper791: https://forum.linuxcnc.org/25-classicladder/9584-way-oiler-lube-pump-example
01:58 PM chopper791: net red-light-1-in or2.0.in0 <= motion.spindle-on
01:58 PM chopper791: net red-light-2-in or2.0.in1 <= halui.program.run
01:58 PM chopper791: net red-light-out <= hm2_[HOSTMOT2](BOARD).0.7i76.0.0.output-01 <= or2.0.out
01:58 PM chopper791: Something like this work?
01:58 PM chopper791: Thanks JT
01:58 PM JT-Shop: looks right to me
01:59 PM chopper791: Perfect I will give it a go. Thanks to all of you!
01:59 PM * JT-Shop goes back to trying to reconcile the mess left over after my paypal got cracked into
02:32 PM jym: JT-Shop: You could add PP Security Key to your account (as long as you don't lose your phone) https://www.paypal.com/us/webapps/mpp/security/security-protections
02:33 PM CaptHindsight: andypugh: did you look into the Udo Neo any further? https://www.udoo.org/udoo-neo/
02:33 PM jym: JT-Shop: They used to offer Secure dongles (I have one) but I dont think they offer them anymore (were $5)
02:34 PM CaptHindsight: went to an all you can eat Mongolian Grill for lunch today, was $3 extra for 2nds and 3rds :)
02:35 PM CaptHindsight: food was worse than 2 star places in China
02:35 PM jym: CaptHindsight: that's fucked up
02:36 PM jym: Evey monoglian or Korean place I've been to is all you cna eat
02:36 PM CaptHindsight: the google and yelp reviews are **** out of 100+ reviews
02:36 PM jym: thats even worse
02:36 PM CaptHindsight: i think people are just getting used to crap
02:37 PM jym: Getting? mor elike ARE
02:37 PM CaptHindsight: "Best Rat Anywhere!" "Looks almost like food, nearly tasted something?"
02:38 PM jym: lol
02:38 PM jym: It's just "fmaily style peasant food, just like grandma used to make"
02:38 PM CaptHindsight: anyway enough complaining for today, with my upiddity tastes an all
02:39 PM jym: It's monogolian bbq, you cna't have much taste at all
02:39 PM jym: Just bunch of meat and veggies, then smothered in savory sauces... YUM!
02:39 PM CaptHindsight: served hot from our trough to your bucket!
02:39 PM jym: lmao
02:40 PM CaptHindsight: eater done! Eat it and beat it!
02:41 PM CaptHindsight: jym: is it winter there yet? 60F today here, 20's tomorrow and all week
02:42 PM jym: CaptHindsight: 31F this morning, 45F currently, high of 51F today
02:42 PM jym: and it's 1pm
02:45 PM gloops: i saw bees out today, unusual for december
02:46 PM gloops: supermoon is also pretty good tonight
02:46 PM gloops: well, the moon
02:46 PM CaptHindsight: always some lingering insects when the temp spikes in winter
02:47 PM CaptHindsight: we had some geese on the roof earlier
02:47 PM gloops: i heard some going over the other night
02:48 PM CaptHindsight: these were walking about
02:48 PM gloops: think they evolved not to land round here lol, soon be in the pot
02:49 PM CaptHindsight: just happy it's not deer
02:49 PM JT-Shop: jym: I don't use my phone for PayPal
02:49 PM CaptHindsight: JT-Shop: had similar with a PP debit card a few years ago
02:50 PM jym: JT-Shop: Well, it's the only two-factor option they offer currently that I"m aware of.
02:50 PM CaptHindsight: I get emails for each transaction so i caught it 15 minutes into several charges in Montreal
02:50 PM jym: JT-Shop: I hate that dependant upon phone thing too btw
02:51 PM jym: if you rphone is lost/stolen, you're kinda fucked.
02:52 PM jym: and of course all your data is one it already, which makes it stupid for that
02:52 PM jym: on*
02:55 PM CaptHindsight: I need a quickset recipe for Gummies
02:55 PM JT-Shop: now I don't keep much money in PayPal and transfer it to a go between account and transfer out of that account as soon as it shows up
02:55 PM JT-Shop: what a pain in the ass
02:58 PM CaptHindsight: PP, debit cards and credit cards are a pain if they get hacked while you are traveling
03:00 PM CaptHindsight: even worse when a bank wants you to phone them from the phone tied to your account
03:00 PM JT-Shop: I can turn off my cards from my phone
03:01 PM CaptHindsight: try that when you're in China or Japan
03:02 PM JT-Shop: I guess you just leave your phone at home when you go out of the country?
03:02 PM CaptHindsight: one blocks your services and the other doesn't even support your phone
03:03 PM CaptHindsight: Skype and similar VOIP or Google Voice used to come in handy
03:04 PM CaptHindsight: don't get hacked abroad and don't get sick or injured
03:05 PM JT-Shop: I don't leave the country any more
03:07 PM CaptHindsight: https://forum.linuxcnc.org/31-cad-cam/33655-cam-for-5-axis-on-linux was just wondering about this today
03:08 PM CaptHindsight: are all the open CAM apps still just 3 axis?
03:10 PM CaptHindsight: http://www.pocketnc.com/blog/ what do they use for CAM?
03:11 PM JT-Shop: I think fusion might be more than 3 but I don't use it
03:11 PM CaptHindsight: http://www.pocketnc.com/post-processor-information/
03:12 PM CaptHindsight: hmm says 2.5 & 3-Axis Machining
03:13 PM CaptHindsight: for both Standard $300/yr and Ultimate $1500/yr
03:14 PM CaptHindsight: http://www.cnc-toolkit.com/
03:15 PM CaptHindsight: https://code.google.com/archive/p/cnctoolkit/
03:15 PM * JT-Shop stockpiles some wood for the upcoming cold days
03:16 PM chopper791: Fusion will do multi axis.
03:16 PM chopper791: Fusion is free to anybody and to businesses that make under 100K per year.
03:18 PM chopper791: Free for one year I think...sorry I was mistaken.
03:20 PM CaptHindsight: chopper791: multi up to 3-axis?
03:21 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.autodesk.com/products/fusion-360/overview don't see anything over 3-axis here
03:22 PM chopper791: Can renew it as long as you need though so that makes me think that its always free if you meet the guide lines.
03:22 PM chopper791: https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/hsm-post-processor-forum/how-to-set-up-a-4-5-axis-machine-configuration/td-p/6488176
03:23 PM XXCoder: chopper791: more specifically, under 100k income a year. they dont care if you make profit or not
03:23 PM CaptHindsight: was looking for open source on Linux, we have Mastercam
03:23 PM CaptHindsight: NX also has 5 axis CAM
03:24 PM chopper791: Thats right.....
03:25 PM chopper791: I would love something in linux enviroment and open source that is similiar to Fusion. I heard a rumor that autodesk is making a Fusion version that is browser based so OS would not matter then I think.
03:25 PM chopper791: Not sure if it is true or not.
03:25 PM XXCoder: I'd not sbe surpised
03:26 PM CaptHindsight: I think I have a few year old version of Inventor
03:26 PM CaptHindsight: I don't use any autodesk software
03:26 PM CaptHindsight: whatever happened to Heeks?
03:26 PM CaptHindsight: was open then closed, then stopped deveoping then back to open then ??
03:27 PM chopper791: https://www.autodesk.com/products/fusion-360/blog/fusion-360-in-a-browser-preview/
03:27 PM chopper791: never used Heeks.
03:27 PM CaptHindsight: I never use any cloud based apps that I have pay for
03:28 PM CaptHindsight: it better run without a network
03:28 PM CaptHindsight: or I'm not interested
03:28 PM XXCoder: I tried heek it sucked
03:28 PM CaptHindsight: http://pycam.sourceforge.net/ was also slow
03:29 PM XXCoder: it probably require me to don a robe and surfice a chicken to it in order to get heeks program to stop crashing
03:29 PM CaptHindsight: XXCoder: maybe you have bad juju?
03:29 PM XXCoder: maybe lol
03:29 PM jym: XXCoder: two chickens and a ostrich
03:31 PM CaptHindsight: http://www.grasshopper3d.com/
03:32 PM chopper791: http://camotics.org/
03:32 PM chopper791: Not sure what this is or how it works but google search resulted with this.
03:32 PM XXCoder: camotics is kinda ok on sim
03:32 PM XXCoder: its old name is freescam
03:33 PM CaptHindsight: a name you can trust
03:33 PM chopper791: got ya
03:33 PM XXCoder: capt yeah. its kinda like kidsexchange. shoul be kids exchange but could read as kid sex change
03:33 PM CaptHindsight: Peter File hah
03:35 PM CaptHindsight: why not freecam? where did the S come from?
03:36 PM XXCoder: free simulation cam
03:36 PM CaptHindsight: frees cam?
03:37 PM CaptHindsight: freesimcam
03:37 PM XXCoder: oh yes my mistake. openscam
03:37 PM CaptHindsight: free scam
03:37 PM XXCoder: Open-Source Simulation & Computer Aided Machining
03:37 PM CaptHindsight: osscam
03:37 PM XXCoder: yeah but its old name was definitely openscam
03:38 PM jym: Autodesk 12 for DOS anyone?
03:38 PM jym: or is that Autocad?
03:38 PM cradek: autocad
03:38 PM cradek: I still use it :-)
03:38 PM CaptHindsight: autoscad
03:38 PM jym: cradek: =)
03:39 PM cradek: bought a dongleless student version right before I graduated, 1997ish
03:40 PM Tom_L: jym is that the one that came on half dozen floppies?
03:41 PM jym: Tom_L: No, 9 floppies =)
03:41 PM Tom_L: novell came on like 30
03:42 PM jym: Tom_L: 40, I just tossed my 500 user license copy away last month =)
03:42 PM Tom_L: i tossed mine quite a while back
03:42 PM Tom_L: not quite 500..
03:42 PM jym: Eh, I actually liked the service account feature it had
03:44 PM Tom_L: did you actually use 500 users?
03:45 PM jym: Tom_L: Yeah, college campus.
03:45 PM Tom_L: i bet that would be slow on the hardware of the day
03:45 PM jym: Tom_L: server or client wise?
03:46 PM Tom_L: server
03:46 PM jym: Tom_L: Not really, it did take 40 minutes to both each lab though, but all the machines were diskless =)
03:46 PM jym: boot*
03:47 PM Tom_L: boot rom in the 3com card?
03:47 PM jym: yep
04:04 PM Deejay: gn8
04:08 PM JT-Shop: yea I got a check today
04:08 PM XXCoder: so, where is my cut
04:08 PM roycroft: hopefully i'll get one today
04:08 PM roycroft: tomorrow is officially payday, but i'm working from home tomorrow
04:08 PM JT-Shop: you want 10%?
04:08 PM XXCoder: hey thats not agreed percentage!
04:09 PM roycroft: my boss usually gives it to me the day before payday if i'm not in the office on payday
04:09 PM XXCoder: ;)
04:33 PM BeachBumPete: Hey folks ;)
05:01 PM JT-Shop: hey Pete
05:04 PM BeachBumPete: Hey JT
05:14 PM JT-Shop: I had to yank a hen from the coop and put her in a dog carrier for the night she was being a bitch
05:18 PM jym: JT-Shop: In heat?
05:19 PM JT-Shop: chickens don't go into heat, she just wanted the roost to herself
05:19 PM SpeedEvil: Hens don't do that
05:20 PM JT-Shop: it was suggested to put a divider up for her, I'll try that tomorrow
05:23 PM JT-Shop: damn having a bunch of females can be a pain in the ass trying to make everyone happy lol
05:26 PM jym: JT-Shop: You just need more cock
05:27 PM JT-Shop: got a rooster, he is the same age as the hens and he has his spot on the roost
05:43 PM DocHopper: I come back and JT-Shop is still talking about his chooks!
05:44 PM DocHopper: Hey everyone, what is everyone's current backlash compensation solution? What is the idea method for eliminating backlash?
05:45 PM archivist: ball screws to eliminate, linuxcnc to compensate
05:45 PM archivist: do do climb milling you need to eliminate
05:45 PM archivist: to do
05:46 PM DocHopper: And linuxcnc compensates by always approaching from the same direction?
05:47 PM archivist: no, that is your code to do conventional, linuxcnc can move to take up the play, all depends on what you are doing
05:50 PM archivist: DocHopper, what are you intending to mill
05:51 PM DocHopper: archivist: This is just a theoretical question.
05:52 PM DocHopper: Let's say a laser, so there's minimal resistance, accuracy is key. How would one negate backlash?
05:54 PM archivist: for a laser there is no climb milling and you can use linuxcnc but.....because its laser you may not want that so it burns correctly
05:55 PM pcw_mesa_: raster and do backlash compensation outside the active data area (for bi-di scanning) ?
05:55 PM archivist: outside the area should be perfect
05:59 PM * jym laser uses steppers and belts -shrug-
06:00 PM CaptHindsight: my galvos have no lash :)
06:00 PM jym: CaptHindsight: Fuck you, and have a nice day (bastard)
06:01 PM pcw_mesa_: linear motors and air bearings?
06:01 PM CaptHindsight: jym: I have a 1.5um galvo scanner and ~150mm FL lens but no docs
06:01 PM jym: CaptHindsight: send it my way =)
06:02 PM CaptHindsight: hardly used
06:02 PM jym: CaptHindsight: I'm sure that I coudl rerofit to my laser =)
06:02 PM CaptHindsight: I asked Cambridge tech support for docs but they said it was 10 years EOL
06:02 PM CaptHindsight: after EOL so they didn't have them anymore :)
06:03 PM CaptHindsight: looks brand new
06:03 PM CaptHindsight: RE or worst case, swap motors and amps
06:04 PM CaptHindsight: jym: what wavelength are you using?
06:04 PM jym: CaptHindsight: It's just a CO2
06:04 PM CaptHindsight: ah so 10.5um
06:05 PM CaptHindsight: think it has 10mm mirrors
06:05 PM jym: CaptHindsight: But my laser is "old school" in that it bascially acts like a printer and uses a printer driver to make settings (aka the CAM part)
06:06 PM CaptHindsight: General Scanning Inc P.N.: E00-7010021 Model# XY10A-055-YH (Y2) Date: Dec 22, 1995
06:07 PM jym: CaptHindsight: what is that 55W ?
06:07 PM jym: CaptHindsight: what is that, 55W ?
06:07 PM CaptHindsight: looks like this https://www.terapeak.com/worth/c131371-general-scanning-xy10a-galvanometer-laser-scan-head-w-x-y-galvo-scanner/331956565354/
06:07 PM CaptHindsight: should be able to handle at least 100W
06:08 PM jym: CaptHindsight: It's just the galvo head, no laser?
06:09 PM CaptHindsight: no laser tube, just the scan head and lens as shown ^^
06:09 PM CaptHindsight: I do see Domino scan heads and tubes on fleabay for a few hundred $
06:11 PM jym: CaptHindsight: I'd LOVE a galvo head, and could actually use one. But if you haven't gotten it up and running yet, make me ponder
06:12 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Co2-Laser-Marking-Machine-Galvo-Scanning-Mirrow-Head-10-64um-Wavelength/253052774061 i was going to try one similar
06:12 PM CaptHindsight: I saw some with 10V analog in for XY
06:13 PM DocHopper: CaptHindsight: This is a project to mobilize my galvo unit to increase area.
06:13 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Galvanometer-Scanner-Mirror-Head-for-Fiber-Laser-Marking-Machine-1064nm/252648701894
06:17 PM CaptHindsight: I need to make a XY2-100 interface for a Mesa card
06:17 PM CaptHindsight: it's similar to SPI
06:18 PM CaptHindsight: http://www.newson.be/doc.php?id=XY2-100
06:20 PM CaptHindsight: DocHopper: are you laser marking?
06:20 PM DocHopper: CaptHindsight: Cutting.
06:21 PM CaptHindsight: jym: this SLS printer uses a galvo and a CO2 laser https://ibin.co/w800/3i0LDN2s3TZ7.jpg
06:21 PM CaptHindsight: with Mesa analog servo 7i76
06:38 PM jym: CaptHindsight: is that yours?
06:44 PM CaptHindsight: jym: the SLS, yes
06:44 PM CaptHindsight: RF CO2 laser
06:44 PM jym: CaptHindsight: Do I REALLY have to say it?
06:45 PM CaptHindsight: hah
06:46 PM jym: CaptHindsight (thank you)
06:46 PM jym: CaptHindsight: Whats the working area of the SLS ?
06:47 PM CaptHindsight: jym: it's setup for high res, 75mm x 75mm <100um spot, F.L. is 100mm
06:48 PM CaptHindsight: if I change the lens it can be 250mm x 250mm with a slightly larger spot
06:48 PM CaptHindsight: back in abit
06:48 PM jym: CaptHindsight: Oh, tiny. I need 12x12"
06:50 PM jym: CaptHindsight: The spot size on my lens is 0.005"
06:50 PM jym: 0.13mm
06:50 PM MrHindsight: 130um
06:51 PM jym: MrHindsight: ty
06:52 PM MrHindsight: jym: https://nutfieldtech.com/xlr8-10-packaged-2-axis-scan-head/
06:52 PM jym: I tlooks like I cna get a lens that'll give me 0.001" spot size
06:53 PM MrHindsight: ^^ ~$3k for the galvo head, mirrors, amps, lens etc
06:53 PM jym: MrHindsight: I WANT a galvo, but not NEED a glavo (yet)
06:54 PM MrHindsight: fl=200mm 140 x 140mm scan area 288um spot for CO2
06:55 PM MrHindsight: resolution is <12um
06:57 PM MrHindsight: jym: if you want that 1.5um yag glavo let me know
06:57 PM MrHindsight: I might swap amps if I can't find the old docs
06:58 PM jym: MrHindsight: What, are you trashing it?
06:58 PM MrHindsight: jym: will sit around until I need it
06:59 PM MrHindsight: looks like analog in amps
06:59 PM MrHindsight: everything is fine
06:59 PM MrHindsight: just no pinouts
06:59 PM jym: MrHindsight: Heh, sounds like Capt's issue too (no docs)
06:59 PM MrHindsight: so like i said worst case will be new galo motors and amps
07:00 PM MrHindsight: galo/galvo
07:00 PM MrHindsight: i have to ask around on the old laser forums
07:01 PM jym: MrHindsight: I'll keep it in mind if someoen changes on my ned. What were you looking for it?
07:01 PM MrHindsight: probably someone with paper copies from the 90's
07:01 PM MrHindsight: I'll make you a deal
07:01 PM jym: ...I can't refuse?
07:02 PM * jym starts checking for horse heads in the bed
07:02 PM MrHindsight: ~10% the new price
07:03 PM MrHindsight: TMI
07:05 PM MrHindsight: are the Chinese making RF tubes now?
07:05 PM MrHindsight: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Maiman-30W-Desktop-Co2-Laser-Marking-Machine/253067119593

08:53 PM MrHindsight: https://techshop2.com/ it's back
09:03 PM MarcelineVQ: i've no clue what this is, but that list of differences doesn't ipsnire confidence in what it was. and it's a little odd, " Employees will not be allowed to perform moonlight work for members." but "Culture will change to put the members first regardless of how much time it takes."
09:19 PM Tom_L: sounds like a boilerplate that never gets followed
09:30 PM MrHindsight: is it even possible in the USA today to have something like this and it not being a con?
09:31 PM Tom_L: naw, the news is _always_ truth
09:32 PM MrHindsight: imagine the Apple version tech shop...
09:32 PM MrHindsight: $500/mo
09:33 PM MrHindsight: members vote on whois kewlest
09:33 PM Tom_L: but it's an exclusive club
09:34 PM MrHindsight: all your ideas are belong to us
09:34 PM Tom_L: found an upright column for my mill today but it was too heavy to haul home
09:34 PM Tom_L: 6" square but 1/2" thick
09:34 PM MrHindsight: nice
09:34 PM Tom_L: only about 24" long
09:34 PM MrHindsight: i have an EDM like that
09:34 PM Tom_L: i was kinda sad
09:35 PM Tom_L: i did come home with a 4" piece though
09:35 PM Tom_L: may revise my plan to this: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Column_Design2.jpg
09:36 PM Tom_L: add triangle brace to the back of the angle
09:36 PM Tom_L: and on 3 sides of the square
09:37 PM Tom_L: although i don't think there will be that much force on it in that direction
09:38 PM MrHindsight: whats the Z travel going to be , <12"?
09:43 PM Tom_L: probably
09:43 PM hazzy: Tom_L: I have not been keeping up with your build. Did your other column design not work out, I thought you were pretty far along with it?
09:43 PM Tom_L: it's a 400mm screw
09:44 PM Tom_L: hazzy, i decided to try a column instead for a few reasons
09:44 PM Tom_L: time will tell which way i end up going
09:44 PM MrHindsight: design changes to suit deals on materials
09:44 PM Tom_L: that too
09:44 PM jym: Tom_L: <---- GO THAT WAY ---->
09:44 PM hazzy: Ah, ok
09:45 PM MrHindsight: https://ibin.co/2eWjnYtOrXq9.jpg reinforce the square tube with dampening materials
09:46 PM MrHindsight: round tube inside square tube with bars and concrete or polymer granite
09:46 PM Tom_L: i may put my counterweight there like the big ones do
09:46 PM jym: Then fill said tubes with expanding foam

10:20 PM Contract_Pilot: Nice orderd 14 collets on ebay and only got a package of 4
10:20 PM MarcelineVQ: :(
10:21 PM MrHindsight: Contract_Pilot: was the bag of tissue it was shipped in torn in any way? :)
10:21 PM Contract_Pilot: Nope.
10:21 PM Contract_Pilot: Actually in a bubble mailer
10:22 PM MrHindsight: what size?
10:22 PM Contract_Pilot: I could feel the package was not right...
10:22 PM MrHindsight: er20?
10:22 PM Contract_Pilot: ER20
10:22 PM hazzy: Maybe in China 14 actually means 4, just like 9 in Germany actually means none

10:23 PM Contract_Pilot: I orderd induviduial
10:24 PM Tom_L: MrHindsight, decent quality?
10:25 PM MrHindsight: Tom_L: good enough, I wouldn't use them for anything really important

10:25 PM Contract_Pilot: Lable sayd 14 no way 14 in that bubble mailer.
10:26 PM MarcelineVQ: only 10 in the list too
10:26 PM MarcelineVQ: all kinds of wrong :X
10:26 PM MrHindsight: they use the same numbers in China
10:26 PM Contract_Pilot: Yea, will contact seller hahaha
10:26 PM * hazzy wipers because no one noticed his lame pun
10:27 PM MrHindsight: plus the label is on upside down :)
10:27 PM MarcelineVQ: MrHindsight: that's the last straw!

10:27 PM * hazzy feels better :D
10:28 PM MrHindsight: <-- from an old german family
10:28 PM MrHindsight: 999
10:28 PM MrHindsight: no no no
10:30 PM MrHindsight: you have to speak English to get it since they say it neun vs nine
10:30 PM MrHindsight: no = nein
10:42 PM hazzy: CaptHindsight: That is interesting, I did not know the proper pronunciation. My sources are not the best: https://youtu.be/6X7vJp5h8O4?t=363
10:50 PM Contract_Pilot: I need 5/32 ER20
10:54 PM CaptHindsight: hazzy: that small guy with the thick non German accent used to be on Lost in Space
10:56 PM CaptHindsight: Fritz Feld

11:00 PM Contract_Pilot: I think the factory nav system is not shutting down the bose amp...
11:03 PM CaptHindsight: intermittent problems are the worst, well besides the ones that kill or maim you
