01:16 AM jelly-home is now known as jelly
01:49 AM IchGucksLive: morning from germany
02:03 AM IchGucksLive: off 2 garden Bye
02:14 AM miss0r: cleaning out the flood cooland tank... yikes!
03:26 AM selroc: hi
05:02 AM XXCoder: how wonderful. black guy that was beaten by 6 white power shitheads are charged for assult felony.,
05:03 AM Loetmichel: XXCoder: HE IS or THEY ARE?
05:03 AM XXCoder: he is.
05:03 AM XXCoder: nothing is said about charging those shitheads so they may or may not be charged. black guy, however, is.
05:04 AM Loetmichel: nice. quite in line with the southern sherrif seeing a black body with 40+ stabbing wounds: "what a gruesome suicde"... :-(
05:04 AM jthornton: morning
05:05 AM XXCoder: yeah
05:05 AM XXCoder: hey
05:06 AM XXCoder: Loetmichel: and another dister, calfornia fire is getting huge.
05:07 AM XXCoder: and nothing from 45 on getting any help
05:07 AM Loetmichel: 45?
05:07 AM XXCoder: trump
05:07 AM Loetmichel: 45th president?
05:07 AM XXCoder: yeah
05:07 AM Loetmichel: did you really expect ANY help from him?
05:08 AM XXCoder: maybe if white power villages was being threatened
05:08 AM XXCoder: touch of good news though
05:09 AM XXCoder: dumbass guy attacked my old job place again, so guy got caught
05:09 AM XXCoder: he was trying to set it in fire again
05:09 AM XXCoder: succeeded this time but it was caught so fast only one office was damaged.
05:09 AM XXCoder: its place that provides resources for deaf people
05:10 AM XXCoder: so hes being charged for hate crime as well as other charges like breaking and entering and arson
05:12 AM jthornton: today will be nice weather with a high of 68F
05:13 AM XXCoder: Loetmichel: it was close though, they was planning on delaying alarm system so they have budget to fix broken windows and stuff
05:13 AM XXCoder: but my bro told them it have to installed right away, and it was installed one day before second breakin
05:53 AM Loetmichel: some people...
05:53 AM Loetmichel: @ XXCoder
06:06 AM miss0r: hate crime... lol! Theres realy people who hate deaf people?
06:07 AM syyl: they feel ignored by deaf people
06:07 AM miss0r: When I come to think about it, its not any more crazy than hating black/yellow/brown/whatever
06:07 AM syyl: sry. terrible joke
06:07 AM miss0r: ^^
06:07 AM miss0r: lunch time. bbl
06:19 AM XXCoder: miss0r: yes.
06:20 AM XXCoder: Loetmichel: yeah just glad guy was stupid enough to return.
06:36 AM SpeedEvil: XXCoder: yay!
06:36 AM XXCoder: hey
06:37 AM SpeedEvil: Sometimes explicit acts are easier to deal with than just lack of care that leads to predictably terrible outcomes for the disabled.
06:40 AM XXCoder: indeed
06:40 AM XXCoder: world isnt perfect and its okay
07:12 AM Deejay: moin
07:37 AM Loetmichel: XXCoder: some dont even have that small a justification... see that girl in the song... "i hate mondays"...
07:37 AM Loetmichel: :-(
07:56 AM miss0r: Thank god for hot water cleaners... Its like a pressure washer, that can heat the water up to 150degrees c. It does wonders for oil and grease residue. I would have never gotten my floodcoolant tank clean any other way
07:56 AM miss0r: ... but wait, theres more!
08:00 AM SpeedEvil: 150C?
08:00 AM SpeedEvil: you mean steam cleaner?
08:29 AM MarcelineVQ: I'm probably a little tardy to the party but I just learned a neat aliexpress trick. Scaling on shipping is courier-dependant, so if you're buying multiple of something you can often get a better price by checking the shipping options after putting in how many to get
08:30 AM SpeedEvil: yep
08:31 AM MarcelineVQ: I should have looked for a primer about that stuff, someone's probably got all those tricks written down. specifically that one above and sort-by-orders
08:31 AM Jymmm: MarcelineVQ: It's typically limited by total order UNDER $5 USD.
08:31 AM MarcelineVQ: Really glad to stumble into that because it's gonna save me 50$ on motors
08:32 AM Jymmm: MarcelineVQ: But, sometimes it's qty of items, BUT you CAN place multiple 4 item orders to the same vendor.
08:32 AM MarcelineVQ: Jymmm: I see so there's minmaxing to be done if a person needs a good amount of something
08:33 AM Jymmm: MarcelineVQ: Pretty much. Just keeping adding 1 to the qty till the shipping jacks up, then -1 and reload the page.
08:34 AM Jymmm: ...till you find the sweet spot.
08:34 AM Jymmm: I've need 12 items, but had to do it in 4 orders. although you are only paying once.
08:34 AM SpeedEvil: Sometimes I wish there was a nice easy way to load up a pallet sized cupboard somewhere in china with crap.
08:35 AM Jymmm: SpeedEvil: It's called a shipping container, ot Jolly Green Giant cupboard =)
08:35 AM Jymmm: or*
08:36 AM Jymmm: SpeedEvil: I know someone in S.Africa that ordereds sheets of acrylic annually by the shipping contianer full
08:36 AM SpeedEvil: Jymmm: yes, I know, however there is not (or there probably is, and I'm not aware of it) a simple solution to quite do the above.
08:37 AM SpeedEvil: I mean for collecting random goods into, rather than one vendor.
08:38 AM Jymmm: SpeedEvil: Like a china shopping mall?
08:38 AM Jymmm: of sorts
08:38 AM SpeedEvil: More industrially focussed.
08:39 AM Jymmm: Yeah, I understand, the china amazon of sorts.
08:46 AM Jymmm: SpeedEvil: That would probably get me into a LOT of trouble =) I have modules that I haven't even taken out of their package yet that I received months ago =)
08:46 AM SpeedEvil: I mean - for example - so I can add a couple of hundred kilos of magnesium ingots, a roll of multi-layer packaging film, some photoinitiator, ...
08:49 AM MarcelineVQ: sounds like a good surprise for a nosey government official
08:49 AM MarcelineVQ: what is this in this box...
08:51 AM * JT-Shop finally found that tiny tiny screw on his desk for the Honda key :)
08:52 AM Loetmichel: oookay... 0.3mm trace widht and 0.3mm insulation channel is the minimum the CNC 6040 can do... barely sufficient but it did turn out well. Now lets hope i didnt made an error in the EDA... -> http://www.cyrom.org/palbum/main.php?g2_itemId=16815&g2_imageViewsIndex=1
08:53 AM MarcelineVQ: Loetmichel: cool stuff
08:57 AM MarcelineVQ: Loetmichel: assuming this is your site; what is the router being used here? http://www.cyrom.org/palbum/main.php?g2_itemId=4403
08:57 AM Loetmichel: selfbouilt
08:57 AM Loetmichel: or did you mean the spindle?
08:57 AM Loetmichel: thats a kress 9660
08:57 AM MarcelineVQ: the spinde yes. thank you
09:03 AM kraegar1 is now known as kraegar
09:19 AM IchGucksLive: hi all from a not sunny germany
09:47 AM IchGucksLive: til later
11:05 AM gloops: well, i think im finally beginning to get the idea with purchasing from china
11:05 AM skunkworks: I bet you have been purchasing from china for a long time...
11:06 AM gloops: yes true, i mean directly
11:06 AM skunkworks: ;)
11:07 AM gloops: the order i placed last week, for delivery in 3 weeks, which was subsequently cancelled because apparently the items had been damaged and would take 45 days + to come back in stock - arrived today
11:07 AM gloops: luckily i didnt re-order from anywhere else
11:24 AM jelly-home is now known as jelly
12:25 PM IchGucksLive: hi
12:26 PM JT-Shop: wow this wide angle ip camera I can see the whole garage from the corner
12:26 PM IchGucksLive: hi rebecca and did you make the part
12:29 PM * Tom_L wonders what's for lunch
12:33 PM * JT-Shop doesn't even get a lunch unless on vacation lol
12:48 PM JT-Shop: I think I'll shovel dirt for lunch
12:57 PM Tom_L: doesn't sound like much fun
12:59 PM SpeedEvil: Depends who you're shoveling it over.
12:59 PM SpeedEvil: I mean for.
01:08 PM IchGucksLive: hi pullen
01:08 PM FAalbers: Just remind me again ... if you do a fast roll and it wobbles a bit before locking in. Is that increasing P or D ?
01:09 PM IchGucksLive: FAalbers: if itr woubles you need more power
01:09 PM FAalbers: That's what i thought , DANKE !
01:09 PM IchGucksLive: more tooltime
01:12 PM pullen: Hi IchGucksLive
01:13 PM IchGucksLive: im in germany so no brexit
01:13 PM pullen: Lucky
01:16 PM roycroft: soon it will be just germany, france, and brussels left in the eu
01:17 PM IchGucksLive: roycroft: paying the bill
01:17 PM roycroft: well
01:17 PM IchGucksLive: but the others may stay for benefit
01:17 PM roycroft: germany and france will be paying the bill
01:17 PM roycroft: brussels will be sucking up all the money for the european parliament
01:17 PM roycroft: but that's ok
01:18 PM roycroft: they have nice waffles and chocolate in brussels
01:18 PM IchGucksLive: fokes is there a good cheep servo 3Axis set
01:18 PM IchGucksLive: the mashine that is to be retrofit has incremental liniar encoders
01:18 PM IchGucksLive: so only servo and stage
01:30 PM gloops: any thoughts on ballscrews with un-machine ends
01:31 PM gloops: my lathe wont turn them because of the lnegth, what about making a sleeve to fit over the ends, with the appropriate diameters and threads, i can do that
01:33 PM hazzy: That is how some of the FlashCut kits work. Just a sleeve that fits over the end of the ballscrew nice and snug and secured with a grub screw or two
01:33 PM hazzy: seems to work OK
01:33 PM gloops: yeah? thats what i had in mind
01:34 PM gloops: probably drill a register for the grub screws
01:34 PM IchGucksLive: gloops: why not redy made
01:34 PM gloops: Ichs just a deal ive seen, but the screws have non machined ends
01:34 PM hazzy: Yes, or grind a flat for the screw :)
01:34 PM gloops: have got 2 with ends done
01:35 PM gloops: right hazzy im clicking now, its the last one
01:38 PM gloops: thats that, £200 into the ether
01:39 PM JT-Shop: nothing like emailing a dozen magnetic companies and trying to hold a conversation with each one while trying to find a solution to my problem lol
01:41 PM IchGucksLive: JT-Shop: is the problem public
01:43 PM IchGucksLive: Loetmichel: bist du da ?
01:46 PM IchGucksLive: oh im off Gn8
01:46 PM JT-Shop: ok tomorrow I show you a photo
01:47 PM pullen: Has anyone had any experience with the Mesa 5i20 cards and eeprom loss?
01:48 PM miss0r: Now all of my linear sliders are scraped in. except for one. He had to take that back to his shop and put it in the surface grinder first. The ballnuts are reballed. It is looking up :)
01:48 PM JT-Shop: nice
01:48 PM JT-Shop: pullen: you could replace the 5i20 with a 5i24
01:49 PM gloops: pullen there are people in here with lots of knowledge of mesa setup, theyll help if you can catch them here
01:50 PM pcw_mesa: You can re-program the EEPROM but it requires DOS
01:50 PM pullen: Hopefully - It takes quite some time for the Mesa stuff to get here
01:50 PM JT-Shop: where is here?
01:50 PM pullen: Hi PCW - I've seen you describe the re-flash on some forums
01:50 PM pullen: Here is Ireland
01:51 PM pcw_mesa: Thats a basic risk with EEPROMS they cannot be fully tested for leakage so there are always some bad ones
01:51 PM JT-Shop: should not take very long to get to Ireland even parcel post usually makes it over there in a week
01:52 PM pullen: PCW - Is there a trigger for the loss? I can't explain what happened - The machine wouldn't boot, then when it did, I couldn't see it via lspci
01:52 PM pullen: Changed the Jumper (W6, I think) and I can see something
01:53 PM pullen: JT-Shop: From where?
01:53 PM pullen: If it was only a few days, that'd be great!
01:54 PM pcw_mesa: Usually just a bad EEPROM
01:54 PM pcw_mesa: If its an old card I would re-flash it
01:54 PM pcw_mesa: If its less than 2 years old I would send it back for repair
01:54 PM pullen: ~9 months
01:54 PM pcw_mesa: so still under warranry
01:55 PM pullen: I really need the machine up and running - big job with lots of pressure, currently set-up
01:55 PM JT-Shop: pullen: I'm in central US http://mesaus.com/
01:56 PM gloops: i got a delivery from china to UK in a week - arrived today
01:56 PM JT-Shop: https://mesaus.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=63&product_id=61
01:56 PM pcw_mesa: I'm surprised, haven't seen a bad one in years
01:56 PM pcw_mesa: If you are in a a hurry, order a new one (or a 5I24)
01:56 PM pcw_mesa: and then send the bad one to Mesa for repair
01:56 PM JT-Shop: pcw_mesa: does the 5i24 use different pin names from the 5i20?
01:57 PM pcw_mesa: Well yes because they all have 5i24 in the name instead of 5I20
01:57 PM pullen: What's the main difference with the '24 and 20? Is the 24 a drop-in replacement?
01:57 PM JT-Shop: pullen: any orders I receive before 9am get to the distribution center that same day for USPS
01:58 PM pcw_mesa: pretty much, the 5I24 has built in firmware so is configured only once (via mesaflash)
01:59 PM pcw_mesa: so theres no "firmware=xxxx" on the driver command line
01:59 PM JT-Shop: ok thanks
02:00 PM pcw_mesa: so to change a 5I20 config to 5I24 you would globally replace "5i20" with "5i24" in the hal/ini files
02:01 PM JT-Shop: that sounds easy enough
02:01 PM pcw_mesa: flash the 5I24 with the desired firmware, and delete the "firmware=xxxx" token in the hal or ini file
02:04 PM CaptHindsight: what's a good application for hundreds of feet of 18Ga solid insulated copper wire?
02:04 PM CaptHindsight: in various colors
02:05 PM skunkworks: a pretty tesla coil?
02:05 PM FinboySlick: First you move to a 3rd world country, then you get cancer from burning off the insulation, then you sell the copper to feed your family :P
02:05 PM JT-Shop: stripping solid is easy
02:06 PM CaptHindsight: <-- mistakenly got solid vs stranded at Fry's since they were mixed in with the stranded
02:06 PM Jymmm: CaptHindsight: exchange it for what you want?
02:07 PM CaptHindsight: <-- realized the issues after removing the shrink wrap from the coils
02:07 PM Jymmm: CaptHindsight: Eh, they dont care, just keep the receipt
02:07 PM gloops: you could strip it and make ornamental trees with intricate weaving to sell on ebay
02:08 PM CaptHindsight: I'm not sure why they even stock 18 solid
02:08 PM CaptHindsight: how many door bells are there?
02:08 PM CaptHindsight: and craft projects
02:08 PM FinboySlick: In all seriousness, I'm not sure what one would do with that much.
02:08 PM gloops: the local coal mine used to use 3 core cable with solid strands as thick as your finger
02:09 PM FinboySlick: If it was bare, maybe some sort of custom heating element for a home-made kiln.
02:09 PM sadisticroot: Stripping copper with fire changes its grade
02:09 PM sadisticroot: Most places won't even take it
02:10 PM gloops: when a face was exhausted of coal, the overman used to say - right, get everything out - they would scrap all the fittings and cables job lot, got took up and dumped on the surface, then theyd blow the tunnel
02:11 PM gloops: the locals knew the value of the copper cables heh
02:11 PM sadisticroot: Oh yeah, while I'm here
02:11 PM sadisticroot: Anybody have need of a CMM?
02:11 PM _methods: CaptHindsight: flyin in to chicago on the 5th, going to fabtech on the 6th then flyin out on the 7th
02:12 PM _methods: sunday is all booked up though going to the trumpf smart factory and eating dinner with them that night
02:12 PM _methods: but i don't know what we're doing on monday after the show for eating
02:13 PM CaptHindsight: 5th is Sunday
02:13 PM _methods: yeah
02:13 PM CaptHindsight: ok, let see
02:13 PM CaptHindsight: keep in touch the week before
02:13 PM _methods: sure
02:14 PM _methods: you register for the show?
02:14 PM CaptHindsight: thanks for reminding me
02:14 PM CaptHindsight: have free passes good to some date that might have passed :)
02:15 PM CaptHindsight: lighting fixtures are allowed 18Ga and larger internally
02:18 PM CaptHindsight: sadisticroot: have pics of the CMM?
02:19 PM sadisticroot: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B5fQTi1W868OdFlhbFBBSnQ1U3M/view?usp=sharing
02:20 PM sadisticroot: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B5fQTi1W868OUnVpVExtSm9rd3c/view?usp=sharing

02:21 PM sadisticroot: Its a Starrett Rapid Check II
02:21 PM CaptHindsight: looks like it still works
02:21 PM sadisticroot: It does!
02:22 PM sadisticroot: I've powered it up and jogged around all the axises, tested the probe
02:22 PM sadisticroot: Has the computer, software, manuals, everything
02:23 PM CaptHindsight: 24x24x18?
02:23 PM _methods: wow nice little cmm
02:23 PM sadisticroot: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B5fQTi1W868OSUducjRud25NU3c/view?usp=sharing
02:23 PM sadisticroot: Heh, little
02:23 PM sadisticroot: The things is like 7ft tall
02:24 PM _methods: well compared to cmm's i'm used to dealing with that's a nice little shop floor cmm
02:24 PM sadisticroot: It almost certainly will need some tlc, cleaning etc
02:24 PM sadisticroot: But everything works
02:24 PM _methods: pc-dmis on it?
02:24 PM gloops: what is that? resin build?
02:25 PM _methods: or is it some starrett proprietary software?
02:25 PM sadisticroot: I think its Starrett proprietary
02:25 PM sadisticroot: Has the whole manual for it though
02:25 PM _methods: hmm
02:26 PM CaptHindsight: gloops: granite
02:26 PM sadisticroot: Yeah, solid granite
02:26 PM _methods: how much you asking?
02:26 PM sadisticroot: $2k
02:26 PM _methods: oh wow ok location?
02:26 PM sadisticroot: Durham, NC
02:26 PM _methods: ok i'm interested
02:26 PM sadisticroot: I figure that's what I would get parting it out
02:26 PM CaptHindsight: he could rop it off later today :)
02:26 PM CaptHindsight: drop even
02:26 PM _methods: hehe
02:27 PM sadisticroot: If he's local, haha
02:27 PM _methods: charleston sc
02:27 PM _methods: so not far
02:27 PM sadisticroot: Oh wow, not bad
02:27 PM _methods: i actually need to swing by greensboro anyways
02:27 PM _methods: so i might just have to kill 2 birds with one stone
02:27 PM sadisticroot: I've got a forklift on site
02:27 PM _methods: good deal
02:28 PM _methods: well i gotta talk to the boss man and see if he wants to do it
02:28 PM jdh: are those your robot arms?
02:28 PM sadisticroot: No, that's a CMM
02:28 PM sadisticroot: coordinate measuring machine
02:29 PM sadisticroot: I've actually sold both the SCARA arms I had
02:29 PM sadisticroot: Now just have two Cartesians left
02:29 PM jdh: yeah. saw some arms in durham
02:29 PM sadisticroot: That's me, heh
02:29 PM sadisticroot: Or was
02:30 PM jdh: fortunately, I couldn't think of a use
02:30 PM sadisticroot: The Cartesian bots I'm using for cutting and milling
02:31 PM sadisticroot: I originally had 14 total, down to 5 now. 3 I'm keeping
03:10 PM R2E4: jthornton: you there?
03:30 PM JT-Shop: yup
03:37 PM XXCoder: CaptHindsight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S10AK3VxL-Y maybe heh
03:38 PM CaptHindsight: a few hundred feet of 18ga copper is not worth much as scrap
03:39 PM CaptHindsight: might cost me more in fuel to drive back and return it
03:41 PM gloops: slug deterrent?
03:43 PM CaptHindsight: science fair projects
03:43 PM Tom_L: take a bicycle
03:43 PM CaptHindsight: local hackerspace community material bin
03:43 PM XXCoder: remelt and cast into something
03:44 PM Tom_L: that would take even more fuel
03:44 PM CaptHindsight: flexible and reusebale tooth picks
03:44 PM CaptHindsight: weave into shorter but higher gauge wire
03:44 PM gloops: whats the melting temp of copper?
03:44 PM CaptHindsight: higher/thicker
03:44 PM gloops: 1200C?
03:45 PM CaptHindsight: long wave antenna
03:45 PM * sadisticroot has spent way too much time stripping wire
03:45 PM Tom_L: 1085C
03:45 PM sadisticroot: My father just had us use a box cutter
03:45 PM sadisticroot: It was huge wire though
03:45 PM gloops: thats pretty hot
03:45 PM CaptHindsight: custom made craft rings $10ea
03:45 PM XXCoder: make copper hair wig
03:45 PM sadisticroot: When I worked for him I literally got paid in buckets of copper
03:46 PM CaptHindsight: wig now that creative
03:46 PM gloops: copper has certain remedial properties for athritus
03:46 PM Tom_L: make some addon widget acessories
03:46 PM sadisticroot: Isn't that a myth?
03:46 PM CaptHindsight: super duty copper pain relieving underwear
03:46 PM gloops: sadis probably but they sell lots of bracelets
03:46 PM XXCoder: gloops: as braclets and rings? myth heh
03:46 PM Tom_L: somebody made bank on that stupid idea
03:46 PM CaptHindsight: like those copper sports things
03:47 PM sadisticroot: Placebo effect is a powerful thing
03:47 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.getenergysocks.com
03:47 PM CaptHindsight: copper fit
03:47 PM gloops: i read that idea has been around since roman times
03:48 PM XXCoder: yeah some ideas hang around forever
03:48 PM XXCoder: like homopathy
03:48 PM CaptHindsight: copper energy hats
03:48 PM gloops: they probably made a killing too
03:48 PM CaptHindsight: also blocks rays from spy agencies
03:48 PM gloops: alex jones copper rod water purifier
03:49 PM CaptHindsight: does it purify you from alex jones or?
03:49 PM gloops: copper wire will be worth more than gold bullion when the shtf
03:50 PM gloops: worth keeping
03:50 PM CaptHindsight: heavy gauge scouring pads
03:50 PM sadisticroot: gloops: how do you figure?
03:51 PM gloops: sadis its so versatile thats why
03:52 PM gloops: for rabbit snares, fishing hooks, emergency surgery instruments etc
03:53 PM CaptHindsight: diy surgery or?
03:53 PM gloops: would have to be
03:53 PM gloops: remember the brits when they were POWs of the japanese, they made cats whisker radios - no copper wire
03:54 PM CaptHindsight: where did they get the cats?
03:54 PM Tom_L: what did they use to tune it?
03:54 PM CaptHindsight: diy cauterizer
03:55 PM gloops: im not sure, we were going to make one at school
03:55 PM CaptHindsight: fiddled with it until they got a signal
03:55 PM Tom_L: yeah, not like they didn't have time on their hands
03:55 PM gloops: http://www.historywebsite.co.uk/Museum/Engineering/Electronics/history/catswhisker.jpg
03:56 PM XXCoder: prisoner have one duty, to escape
03:56 PM Tom_L: first one i made was galenium with a safety pin
03:56 PM XXCoder: interesting
03:57 PM CaptHindsight: hmm I don't see the history behind the cat whisker/crystal radio not using wires
03:57 PM Tom_L: i thought you needed some sort of choke to tune it
03:58 PM CaptHindsight: The "cat's whisker", a springy piece of thin metal wire,
03:58 PM CaptHindsight: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cat%27s-whisker_detector
03:58 PM Tom_L: galena* sry
03:59 PM CaptHindsight: just a coil and diode to rectify the AM RF
03:59 PM CaptHindsight: I wonder what they used for an ear piece
03:59 PM sadisticroot: They're essentially a very simple crystal radio
03:59 PM Tom_L: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cat%27s-whisker_detector#/media/File:CrystalRadio.jpg
04:00 PM gloops: well, you dont need to use a wire
04:01 PM sadisticroot: I made one as a kid
04:01 PM sadisticroot: They're powered by the actual RF energy hitting the antenna
04:01 PM Tom_L: rfid
04:01 PM CaptHindsight: yes but you still need to rectify the signal and make a diaphragm vibrate
04:01 PM Deejay: gn8
04:01 PM gloops: you can use atmospheric charge i think, with a big enough antenna
04:02 PM sadisticroot: For an earpeice you used one of those little radio shack things
04:02 PM sadisticroot: Mine used a germanium diode
04:02 PM Tom_L: they didn't have radio shack back then
04:02 PM sadisticroot: They didn't need tuning
04:02 PM CaptHindsight: yes, but in a Japanese POW camp in WWII what did they actually use?
04:02 PM Tom_L: mine used a rock and a safety pin
04:02 PM gloops: a whisker lol
04:03 PM sadisticroot: CaptHindsight: a small speaker scavenged somewhere
04:03 PM CaptHindsight: how long until they stop transmitting AM radio?
04:03 PM XXCoder: uhoh. https://www.statnews.com/2017/10/11/pharmacist-congress-drug-delivery/
04:03 PM Tom_L: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foxhole_radio
04:03 PM sadisticroot: Or a homemade small speaker
04:03 PM gloops: no, as i remember they did have wire, they made a large antenna by stretching it out round the fence
04:03 PM Tom_L: maybe that would shed some light
04:04 PM sadisticroot: Yeah, he built a speaker out of nails, wire, wax, bamboo, and a tin can lid
04:05 PM gloops: and that is why copper wire is worth more than gold
04:06 PM Tom_L: http://www.radiosurvivor.com/2009/07/06/home-brew-radio-in-a-wwii-pow-camp-shows-radios-survivability/
04:07 PM XXCoder: surivior types really should pack radios and tech and tools to rebuild tech base. not just guns
04:07 PM Tom_L: http://www.zerobeat.net/qrp/powradio.html
04:07 PM Tom_L: even closer to the article
04:07 PM gloops: communication has been key in the arms race
04:08 PM gloops: the most powerful army is useless if it is fighting blind
04:13 PM sadisticroot: XXCoder: hence I have Ham equipment
04:14 PM * sadisticroot is a "casual" prepper
04:14 PM sadisticroot: I'm more worried about something like in Puerto Rico than armageddon
04:15 PM sadisticroot: In fact that's spurred me to extend my stores . . . I usually have enough food/water/medicine on hand for a couple weeks
04:15 PM sadisticroot: Gifure maybe a month or two would be better, heh
04:17 PM XXCoder: yeah when dear leader dont care..
04:17 PM XXCoder: we would need larger stock
04:18 PM gloops: if the internet went down, we would be back to 1970s technology overnight
04:18 PM gloops: if telephones went - back to 1900
04:21 PM XXCoder: you might like 1632. its part of ring of fire series
04:23 PM XXCoder: one bit of history is gone :( last of code talkers died
04:23 PM sadisticroot: There's a pretty robust group of ham operators who can stich together comms
06:14 PM BeachBumPete: SpaceX is targeting launch of EchoStar 105/SES-11 from Launch Complex 39A (LC-39A) at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, Florida. The two-hour launch window opens on Wednesday, October 11 at 6:53 p.m. EDT :)
06:28 PM mynickwillbechan: Howdy ho folks! After all the help I got last week I now have my VFD doing spindle speed control for me, so thanks! Using quadrature drive for speed and direction control via stepgen.
06:29 PM BeachBumPete: Damn the clouds obscured our view for the most part. Still could see the trail for a bit.
06:29 PM mynickwillbechan: however I've now struck the "if you command a reverse it hits the brakes and locks out the servo"
06:29 PM mynickwillbechan: is there a way of controlling the stepgen output so it ramps down, then reverses, rather than just flips step/gen phase
06:30 PM SpeedEvil: BeachBumPete: might you be able to see S1 landing (upcoming shortly)
06:30 PM SpeedEvil: entry burn now
06:31 PM BeachBumPete: yeah its not happening man there is a large thundercloud between us and the view right now.
06:32 PM BeachBumPete: perhaps next time
06:36 PM SpeedEvil: :)
07:51 PM evilroot: I love that SpaceX launching and landing used rockets is totally normal now
07:51 PM malcom2073: Oh, another rocket landed? *yawn*
07:51 PM malcom2073: We live in a fantastic world
07:52 PM evilroot: Not that everyone thought it was totally impossible like a year ago, and Musk was batshit insane
07:52 PM malcom2073: Poor everyone else with a space program: Oh, your rocket splashed down? What a shame
07:52 PM evilroot: Oh and now he's going to build Moon Base Alpha
07:54 PM Jymmm: evilroot: With their 3D printer of course <rolls eyes>
07:55 PM evilroot: At this point when Elon Musk says he's going to do something, its pretty damned fair to assume he will
07:56 PM evilroot: Hell even I said the same thing about reusing a first stage . . . I mean it just seemed like there was no damned way
07:56 PM evilroot: And he goes and fricking does it
07:57 PM malcom2073: I look forward to the electric semi truck
07:57 PM malcom2073: what I'd *really* like to see, is a turbine hybrid truck
07:57 PM malcom2073: microturbine generators are getting high enough efficiency nowadays that it just might work
07:58 PM * Jymmm attaches a crapload of model rocket engines to malcom2073... MEEP MEEP
07:59 PM malcom2073: shwoosh
08:01 PM Jymmm: malcom2073: self portrait? https://orig00.deviantart.net/0be2/f/2015/121/0/e/coyote_rocket_by_mreiof-d5va4sl.jpg
08:01 PM malcom2073: Sure
08:01 PM Jymmm: nice work =)
08:12 PM Sabotend_ is now known as Sabotender
08:34 PM * evilroot is debating how to make a really big heated bed for a 3d printer
08:34 PM Jymmm: a bbq on wheels you tow behind your truck?
08:43 PM evilroot: Yeah, needs to be used INDOORS
08:44 PM evilroot: Also needs to be really flat
08:44 PM Jymmm: electric sgriddle
08:45 PM Jymmm: griddle from the thrift store, inlcudes thermostat
08:45 PM evilroot: Not big enough
08:45 PM evilroot: Also very uneven heat
08:48 PM Jymmm: add thermal mass for more even heat?
08:59 PM absynth is now known as dan2wik
09:01 PM evilroot: Also a griddle is pretty inefficient
09:33 PM Jymmm: short of a propane 50K btu burner
10:28 PM HighInBC: you can always mount a whole bunch of resistors to the bottom and heat that way, if you have enough of them it should be fairly even
11:15 PM CaptHindsight: evilren: how about posting a complete set of specs for people to chime in on?
11:15 PM CaptHindsight: sorry not evilren meant evulroot
11:21 PM CaptHindsight: evilroot: maybe define things like really big and, efficient
11:22 PM CaptHindsight: use some standard units of measurement
11:22 PM CaptHindsight: provide temperature ranges
11:23 PM CaptHindsight: target costs
11:23 PM CaptHindsight: etc etc
