02:22 AM IchGucksLive: Good morning from Germany
02:29 AM gloops: howdy
02:42 AM Deejay: moin
02:43 AM Vq: Good morning from Kalmar
02:48 AM Deejay: hey there :)
02:57 AM IchGucksLive: Vq: do you also catch this creaturers
03:03 AM IchGucksLive: off grand childran are here ;-)
03:06 AM Vq: creatures?
03:12 AM gloops: well i have found a suitable speed combination for carving new pine
03:12 AM XXCoder: 50000 rpm 1 ipm?
03:12 AM gloops: spindle 20-24k
03:12 AM gloops: feed - the highly questionable rate of 12 inch per minute
03:15 AM gloops: at 3-4mm cut, this gives crisp v carving in any pine, pallets, construction timber etc
03:16 AM Deejay: sounds incredible slow for wood (?)
03:16 AM gloops: yes relatively slow
03:16 AM archivist: iirc, the rpm is very high to knock the wood off before it manages to splinter
03:16 AM gloops: a 4 hour carve at 200ipm becomes a staggering 70 hours
03:17 AM Deejay: oops ;)
03:17 AM gloops: archivist one of the problems with v bits - very narrow rotation at the cutting point
03:19 AM archivist: I know
03:19 AM archivist: pull out is at the surface where the cutter is larger
03:20 AM XXCoder: you discovered cnc machinist method of starting campfires ;)
03:20 AM Deejay: lol
03:20 AM gloops: well, the cure is fast spindle slow feed, did some tests yesterday, so if anyone wants to make a note of that
03:21 AM gloops: i suppose in many situation a roughing cut at normal speeds would take out the bulk of the time
03:22 AM archivist: may get splits with the roughing that is not cleaned up later
03:23 AM gloops: yes would have consider the piece - maybe go to flat depth of contour + a few mm
03:25 AM gloops: also a snag i have - the code is not waiting for the spindle to reach speed before commencing cutting
03:27 AM archivist: there is a spindle at speed input to make sure, also you can just add a delay
03:28 AM gloops: is that in the HAL? - have got a spare drive on here now so ill install linuxcnc then i can use the sim for learning purposes
03:29 AM gloops: it takes about 30 seconds to get to 20 k speeds at the acceleration ive got on the spindle, think you are supposed to build uop steady with these - advises warming them up before cutting
03:31 AM archivist: if there is a spindle at speed output on the vfd, then wire it to the bob and connect in hal
03:32 AM gloops: ahh yes never thought of that, think there is, ill look at it later
03:32 AM archivist: option 2 measure the speed and drive spindle at speed
03:32 AM archivist: option 3 add a delay
03:33 AM archivist: option 4 go see a steam engine running later :)
03:33 AM gloops: will look at delay and vfd output
03:33 AM gloops: in york later
03:33 AM archivist: seems we are running Tuesday for a party as well
03:34 AM gloops: got 3 gallon of sloe wine to start off
04:57 AM miss0r: Sorry I didn't write yesterday about the technician. I just hit the mother lode
04:59 AM miss0r: Really cool guy. We made a trade. I'm going to hack together a plastic casing, with a stepper controller inside. In the front a reverse direction switch and a pot-meter for speed control. Also, he wants to have two limit switches that changes direction. Easy peasy!. In return he will reball my ballnuts, and scrape in x and z axis carriage. He will return this wensday
05:01 AM miss0r: Althou. I will make that controller of his look like a million. I feel i'm not giving a lot in return. Its gonna meet every industrial standard! :)
05:23 AM gloops: perfick miss0r absolutely perfick
05:26 AM miss0r: yes. i just have to remove the x-axis carriage by then. And i'm half done now... (it only takes so long, since I have to mark up and remove a metric shit ton of lubrication hoses
05:29 AM miss0r: apparently alot of the issues i've been having is caused by the a layer of something I cannot remember the name of. Some substance that is put on the linear sliders. That substance has grown because i've changed to another way-oil than the previous owner. So he will scrape that back to spec
05:37 AM gloops: well probably best left to an expert - can do more damage than good if you get wrong
06:08 AM miss0r: absolutly. I could not have hoped for a better solution to be honnest
06:18 AM gloops: im pondering making a bearing to rotate a nut, on my 1914 britannia lol
06:18 AM gloops: he who dares wins
06:18 AM miss0r: What the hell is that? :S
06:19 AM gloops: britannia lathe
06:19 AM miss0r: holy!... you have a motor in there, right? :)
06:20 AM miss0r: actualy looks pretty cool
06:21 AM gloops: http://www.lathes.co.uk/britannia/img48.jpg like that, mine is a bit longer and higher
06:22 AM miss0r: damn. thats some nice equipment
06:22 AM gloops: not making a bearing for it, make a bearing on it
06:22 AM gloops: they werent very good really, can coax a job out of it still though, mine came off a ship
06:24 AM gloops: if i pour some ally into a metal tube, i can bore out for case bearings easy, and still weld the outer tube onto a bracket
06:24 AM gloops: into an iron tube
06:36 AM miss0r: I was just on the phone with him. He will be back here Wensday with the reballed ballnuts and bringing his electric scraper to touch up the linear sliders. hehe. The thought made me laugh. The price for a biax electric scraper is more than I payed for my machine.
06:37 AM gloops: well, $150 an hour sounds a lot, until you think of stuff like that
06:38 AM miss0r: Indeed. We came to an agreement of 0$/hours, as long as I build him the stepper controller :D
06:38 AM miss0r: which is why I am somewhat exstatic
07:04 AM SpeedEvil: miss0r: yay
07:05 AM SpeedEvil: miss0r: even at $150/hr, good advice is often a bargain
08:49 AM IchGucksLive: hi rain and strom in germany :P
09:16 AM IchGucksLive: later
10:30 AM hazzy: morning
10:30 AM hazzy: Dark and rainy here, but we need it so I guess I can't complain
10:33 AM Jymmm: Why do people always say that? "Oh we need it..." FUCK THAT! When the full of winter comes we will have no choice but to endure heavy rain/snow/etc. Until that, no rain because I want to be outdoors and play!
10:34 AM Jymmm: ...especaly since it seems we'll have a LONG winter this year.
10:40 AM hazzy: haha, yes, but if you grow a lot of your own food, then ...
10:51 AM Jymmm: ...you have green houses?
10:52 AM Jymmm: then you can grow in winter too?
11:14 AM * Tom_L moves Jymmm to the sahara desert
11:19 AM Jymmm: Tom_L: There's water there too, it's just the sand storms that are a bitch... https://youtu.be/xG04vAPjocQ?t=7
11:43 AM IchGucksLive: hi ;-)
12:24 PM miss0r: It seems I need to change some lubrication fittings - a few of them are leaking a little. Where on gods green earth do get get 4mm OD clear plastic hose that can handle oil?
12:25 PM miss0r: and I also need these fitting foe 4mm hose: http://www.vvsnetsalg.dk/sites/default/files/styles/product_large_view/public/AO2/045179331/image_l.jpg?itok=HjuDsr7r (I don't know the english term for this)
12:29 PM hazzy: Those look like Bijur fittings
12:57 PM IchGucksLive: one more week school holiday
12:57 PM IchGucksLive: ;-)
01:04 PM IchGucksLive: DaPeace: how is it in the Alps
01:04 PM IchGucksLive: snow in the forcast ?
01:04 PM pcw_home: but assuming the feedback is relatively linear it should be mostly P that used since its a simple position in/ velocity out loop
01:05 PM pcw_home: sorry wrong tab...
01:05 PM IchGucksLive: pcw_home: wrong channel
01:06 PM DaPeace: IchGucksLive: over 2000m its really white..
01:07 PM DaPeace: forecast says summer is coming back this week.
01:07 PM IchGucksLive: fully agree
01:08 PM IchGucksLive: we got to do lots of in the agra sector till snow
01:09 PM DaPeace: last 5 years snow was not really a "problem" in tirol in the valleys… we had 2-3 times snow down here.
01:12 PM IchGucksLive: DaPeace: does the aipjoch skilift go to Boden
01:12 PM IchGucksLive: or sking to Pfaffar
01:17 PM IchGucksLive: http://www.openstreetmap.org/search?query=imst#map=14/47.2470/10.6879
01:18 PM DaPeace: alpjoch-skilift? in imst?
01:19 PM DaPeace: these are 2 skilift.. one from hochimst to a middlestation and one from the middlestation to the top.. they are open from late december to april.. at the moment there is not really any snow up there
01:19 PM DaPeace: maybe on top where the lift ends
01:20 PM IchGucksLive: are you around this town
01:21 PM DaPeace: yes. in 5min im in hochimst ;-)
01:21 PM IchGucksLive: nice place to live and work
01:22 PM IchGucksLive: you shoudt makke 4 axis sculps for japan tourists
01:22 PM DaPeace: i came here from germany 14 years ago.. after a while you start ignoring the mountains :-D
01:22 PM IchGucksLive: oh german in tirol basement that makes conflikts
01:22 PM DaPeace: at the moment im milling parts for my 3d-printer so i can print sculptures for the tourists :-D
01:23 PM IchGucksLive: better to order them in china as 10000peaces
01:23 PM IchGucksLive: HK can do this for you
01:23 PM IchGucksLive: if he is here ;-)
01:23 PM DaPeace: after 14 years with girlfriend from tirol and after building a house there is not really a problem. my whole company is run by germans and turkish people
01:24 PM IchGucksLive: in towns above 10k people i thiink it is not a issue
01:24 PM DaPeace: there are not many chinese tourists in imst. this is more a place for german and netherland people.. chinese people stay in innsbruck for 10mins and then travel to schloss neuschwanstein :-D
01:25 PM DaPeace: im in a small village next to imst.. 2300 people.. but no problems.
01:25 PM IchGucksLive: yes they shure like Neuschwanstein
01:25 PM IchGucksLive: as here the Ameican like this old casels 2
01:26 PM IchGucksLive: but not the way up
01:26 PM DaPeace: where are you from?
01:28 PM DaPeace: is norbert the maker of gmoccapy here in the channel sometimes?
01:28 PM IchGucksLive: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burg_Gr%C3%A4fenstein
01:29 PM DaPeace: ah ok.. ive heared from zweibrücken.. but never was there
01:30 PM IchGucksLive: no need to be in futhure
01:31 PM IchGucksLive: im off Gn8 from Germany
01:39 PM jthornton: afternoon
01:42 PM XXCoder: hey
02:03 PM miss0r: XXCoder: I now have all the sliding surfaces exposed :) All the original scrapings are still there :]
02:03 PM XXCoder: is that good or bad? heh
02:03 PM miss0r: XXCoder: its a indicator that tells me there hasen't been alot of wear
02:03 PM miss0r: so good :)
02:04 PM XXCoder: nice. guessed that after I typed that
02:04 PM miss0r: We agreed on a trade(the technician)
02:05 PM miss0r: he is reballing my ballnuts at the moment, and will return wensday and scrape the linear bearing surfaces. In return I am going to make him a stepper controller. Speed control, start/stop and reverse for one axis :)
02:05 PM XXCoder: reballing ballnuts :P
02:06 PM miss0r: say that 10 times fast in a row :þ
02:06 PM XXCoder: sometimes barter is nice
02:06 PM XXCoder: I'd get my arms tangled saying that :P
02:06 PM miss0r: He took a quick look around in here once he was in the door going: "So thats what you're doing - I think we can make an arrangement"
02:08 PM miss0r: When it comes to the scraping technique, i'm hardly mastering the three plate method.. so its better left to someone who knows what they are doing
02:09 PM XXCoder: yeah
03:12 PM gloops: all quiet on the western front
03:20 PM gloops: saw something mildly amusing in york centre today, old man with a pedal fretsaw set up in the middle of the square
03:21 PM syyl: roy underhill?
03:21 PM gloops: he was cutting peoples names out of strips of plywood, i was first surprised by how fast he was feeding the wood through
03:21 PM gloops: pedalling pete or something it said on the box
03:21 PM syyl: lol
03:22 PM gloops: i was then amazed to realise - he was not drawing anything on the wood, totally freehand ! like lightning, they were perfect lettering
03:22 PM SpeedEvil: Skills.
03:22 PM gloops: truly skilled, old jewish guy, big beard, hat, threadbare trainers
03:24 PM gloops: he took the name out in one piece, handed it to the punter fitted back into the strip
03:28 PM hazzy: That brings back memories. When I was very little (4-6) I used to hang out at Highland Hardware. Roy Underhill spent a good bit of time there, and had a treadle "jig saw" that he would peddle while I scrolled on scrap wood.
03:29 PM hazzy: He gave me plans for the saw and told me to make one when I got older, I never did though.
03:30 PM hazzy: I wonder were those plans are??
03:33 PM gloops: i looked at the machine - pretty simple design, there was a large cast wheel up front which at first glance wasnt doing anything, just going round, i thought it might be for show - but on second thoughts that was probably giving some inertia to the blade
03:34 PM gloops: not heard of roy underhill
03:35 PM syyl: THE handtool-guy on tv ;)
03:35 PM syyl: woodwright shop
03:36 PM gloops: just googled him - we dont get him over here
03:36 PM syyl: we neither
03:36 PM syyl: :\
03:36 PM syyl: but the internet provides ;)
03:37 PM gloops: yeah looks like an interesting sort
03:38 PM gloops: we had an old guy here called jack hargreaves who tried to document all the dying trades and industries before they dispappeared, especially rural ones
03:48 PM miss0r: damn. The driver for the z axis is a 94Nm DC servo that weighs in at around 120 pounds... I almost killed myself lifting it out
03:49 PM skunkworks: http://electronicsam.com/images/KandT/DSC_0242.JPG
03:49 PM skunkworks: servos we put on the K&T
03:52 PM skunkworks: they peak at 40ft-lbs in our setup
03:52 PM skunkworks: (aprox 1ft-lb per amp)
03:53 PM miss0r: This is the one in questions: http://picpaste.com/IMG_20171008_222031-z6DugZtq.jpg
03:53 PM miss0r: Featuring an 8" wrench
03:54 PM miss0r: nice. this is only around 0,35 ft lb/amp it seems
03:54 PM miss0r: 0.47nm/amp
03:54 PM skunkworks: nice!
03:55 PM * skunkworks loves servos...
03:55 PM gloops: you want to get some lifting gear on the job miss0r, pulled backs arent easy to fix
03:56 PM skunkworks: even little ones.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3sKTwfrtOE
03:56 PM miss0r: gloops: I hear'ya. This unit protruded longer through the base of the machine than I imagined. So it was alot heavier than enticipated
03:56 PM skunkworks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lTNzBLNBNiE
03:57 PM miss0r: cute
04:00 PM miss0r: damnit this sucks... hahaha. I only removed the servo because i felt I had something binding on the z-axis ballscrew. It turned out the ballscrew works flawlessly. The motor was disconnected from the ballscrew but was still tight. So I removed it, expecting to find a bad bearing or something.... the label reads '5Nm break'.. *sigh*
04:01 PM miss0r: So, all for nothing
04:05 PM skunkworks: heh
04:05 PM gloops: man who does something for nothing always got job (grasshopper)
04:05 PM skunkworks: sometimes it is 1 step forward 2 steps back
04:06 PM gloops: its a process of elimination anyway
04:07 PM miss0r: yeah. The technician that was here yesterday said that my only problem is actualy the coating on the sliders. It has grown because I use another wayoil then the previous owner
04:08 PM miss0r: well. that in turn caused the y and x ballnut to wear prematurely
04:12 PM skunkworks: we took a hydraulic cylinder apart because it locked up. actually cut it apart. had all sorts of theories of why it was so tight (water in oil and such) ended up being one of the hydraulic fittings was unhooked.
04:19 PM gloops: i wonder if theres anything you could run on the ways - like a stripper or something, spirits, naptha something like that
04:20 PM HighInBC: strippers can run real fast in high heels
04:22 PM gloops: it cant be that difficult
04:26 PM miss0r: it doesn't matter much. he will come back wensday with my refurbished ballnuts and he will scrape in the linear guides
04:29 PM miss0r: last cigarette of the night. Then i better get some sleep (Damn day job)
04:32 PM miss0r: The stuff about removing this servo is that the timing belt is located underneath the mill base. And the access panels are build for someone with smaller hands than me. This sucks. heh. that will have to wait for tomorrow. See you around
05:12 PM Deejay: gn8
05:50 PM {HD}: any welders here? can you ID these tank sizes? https://imgur.com/a/SrBiS
06:00 PM hazzy: Little hard to get the scale, but medium size looks like what have, which is a #1
06:01 PM {HD}: hazzy: You think that’s the size of the one on the back left?
06:02 PM hazzy: Shorts on back left looks like a WQ
06:02 PM hazzy: Let me draw on the pic for you, sek :D
06:04 PM {HD}: hazzy: cool thanks
06:07 PM SpeedEvil: https://www.instagram.com/p/BaAOokSgdCp/ tesla model 3 line 1/10 speed
06:08 PM hazzy: {HD}: https://i.imgur.com/p8m2VAk.png
06:09 PM hazzy: All I know is that is what they call them when I get them exchanged
06:09 PM hazzy: Hope fully someone else will chimb in who now then all and will set me right :D
06:10 PM {HD}: Lol
06:11 PM {HD}: https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/oxygen-gas-cylinder-1-size-20-cu-ft
06:11 PM SpeedEvil: hazzy: work out where it comes up to you. Now, measure how high that is. Now look up dimensions
06:11 PM {HD}: TSCs #1s seem short and squat
06:12 PM {HD}: SpeedEvil: these are some tanks I am thinking of buying and the frigin old man selling them doesnt remember the size
06:12 PM {HD}: I was hoping it would be obvious to someone here
06:12 PM TurBoss: they are big
06:12 PM TurBoss: :D
06:12 PM hazzy: huh, my #1 are big!
06:13 PM {HD}: IDK anything
06:14 PM hazzy: https://www.praxairdirect.com/Industrial-Gas-and-Welding-Information-Center/Cylinder-Cryo-and-Gas-System-Information/Cylinder-Size-Information.html
06:18 PM hazzy: Ok, my "#1" is 48" tall and 7" dia, and has #1 written on it, but from the chart looks like it is an "S"
06:20 PM {HD}: That sounds bigger
06:22 PM hazzy: Oh, maybe the #1 on mine means to bill me as if it it a #1 even though it is an S. ( I get so much liquid nitrogen from them they give me great deals)
06:24 PM {HD}: hazzy: That sounds like a good deal! Where do you go?
06:25 PM hazzy: They come to me :D I use Nexair, specifically the Marietta GA location
06:26 PM hazzy: {HD} Where are you?
06:31 PM {HD}: I am in the south-east of the midwest of the USA
06:31 PM {HD}: ish
06:33 PM hazzy: haha
06:44 PM {HD}: Well, I think I might go buy these tanks...at least go look at them. I have him talked down to a pretty/really cheap price so...
06:47 PM {HD}: Oh damnit, of course they are an hour away...
07:22 PM Jymmm: {HD}: An hour aint nuttin, make a picnic or shopping spree out of it. Bring the dog/wife along
07:23 PM {HD}: Jymmm: good point
10:39 PM ziper: hi, is manual stuff allowed here
10:50 PM hazzy: ziper: hello, and sure! What have you got?
10:50 PM ziper: nothing, but i'm shopping
10:51 PM ziper: i'm curious about cutting tapered threads
10:51 PM ziper: especially on big shafts
10:53 PM hazzy: ok, and your thinking about using LCNC for that?
10:53 PM ziper: no I was actually thinking about doing it manually, presumably with a taper attachment
10:53 PM hazzy: There are some impressive vids on youtube of somebody cutting tapered threeads with LCNC
10:54 PM hazzy: Ah, I was wondering since you mentioned manual
10:54 PM hazzy: what kind of precision do you need?
10:55 PM hazzy: I assume you don't need anything fancy like variable pitch
10:55 PM ziper: not much, I might end up going with straight threads and a sealant
10:55 PM ziper: no but I would be curious to try that with a custom device if I had to for some reason
10:56 PM hazzy: Though I have seen taperd variable pitch threads cut on a manual lathe
10:56 PM hazzy: Are these pipe threads?
10:56 PM ziper: yeah
10:58 PM hazzy: OK, then that should be pretty straight forward, especially with a taper attachment
10:59 PM ziper: how common are pass thru spindles?
11:01 PM hazzy: Very, but it depends on the size you need to be able to pass thru, on a typical lathe it is not over 2-3"
11:08 PM ziper: whats the longest you can typically work on a shaft? 2x the distance between centers?
11:09 PM ziper: the longest shaft, that is
11:11 PM hazzy: As long as you want if supported properly, a lathe with a bar feeder will regularly take a 10 - 20 ft + bar even if it is only .5" dia
11:12 PM hazzy: All you need to do is keep it from wipping
11:13 PM hazzy: Which is not trivial sometimes if the lathe is not variable speed and happens to run at the natural frequency ...
11:14 PM ziper: does a bar feeder do anything special that a steadyrest doesnt?
11:14 PM hazzy: No, not really, but it is on the out board side of the head stock
11:15 PM hazzy: You did mean the length of bar on the out board side?
11:15 PM hazzy: Or did you mean the projection from the chuck?
11:20 PM ziper: board side?
11:21 PM hazzy: The non-chuck side
11:22 PM ziper: and no, I meant the part of the shaft passing though the chuck
11:23 PM hazzy: ok, that is what I thought, just making sure though :D
