01:02 AM hazzy: gn8
02:29 AM IchGucksLive: morning from germany
02:33 AM selroc: hello
02:33 AM IchGucksLive: hi
02:33 AM IchGucksLive: selroc: how did your plans went
02:34 AM selroc: what plans? cnc?
02:34 AM IchGucksLive: yes
02:35 AM selroc: i am procrastinating
02:35 AM selroc: at the moment I am at work
02:35 AM selroc: so no time fo hobbies
02:36 AM selroc: but afternoon ...
02:36 AM IchGucksLive: its always a thinking in bevor a build
02:36 AM IchGucksLive: in germany today is holiday
02:37 AM selroc: have a nice holiday
02:37 AM IchGucksLive: grandchildren will arrive soon
02:38 AM selroc: yes, I am thinking about how to build machine
02:40 AM selroc: but rather I should be working :-)
02:40 AM IchGucksLive: selroc: i start what mainparts is the mashine for
02:40 AM IchGucksLive: ;-)
02:40 AM IchGucksLive: till later
02:41 AM Deejay: moin
05:20 AM jthornton: morning
05:43 AM selroc: hello jthornton
05:43 AM jthornton: hi
05:49 AM Deejay: hey there
05:49 AM jthornton: hey Deejay what's up over there?
05:51 AM Deejay: holiday here in germany
05:51 AM jthornton: nice October fest?
05:52 AM Deejay: nope, not really ;)
05:52 AM Deejay: german unity day
05:56 AM jthornton: hmm not the actual day the wall came down but a political correct day close enough
05:56 AM Deejay: hehe
06:07 AM * jthornton orders 1000 crickets
06:36 AM Tom_L: hello
06:50 AM jthornton: morning Tom
07:11 AM Jymmm: Mornin folks
07:36 AM dan3wik is now known as dan2wik
08:30 AM JT-Shop: morning Jymmm
08:39 AM Jymmm: JT-Shop: Thought of you yesterday, I was ripping some Pink Floyd CD's =)
08:40 AM archivist: I haz the vinyl (or brother has it)
08:40 AM Jymmm: archivist: Even CDs are almost "extinct"
08:41 AM Jymmm: Cd players in laptops are.
08:41 AM JT-Shop: yea I like Pink
08:42 AM Jymmm: Ripped, The Wall, Delicate sound of thunder, and will probably rip Dark side of the moon today. All to FLAC
08:44 AM archivist: umma gumma, saucer full of secrets
08:44 AM archivist: meddle
08:45 AM Jymmm: archivist: I only have those three albums, someoen just recently gave me The Wall, it's what motivated me to rip em.
08:47 AM skunkworks: been listening to a lot of 80's music recently
08:47 AM skunkworks: and cake. Lots of cake.
08:47 AM Jymmm: ...and I had to re-do that a couple of times too, ripping can way too complicated sometimes.
08:47 AM Jymmm: skunkworks: eating it?
08:48 AM skunkworks: listening. cake and beck
08:49 AM skunkworks: for some reason,
08:49 AM Jymmm: heh, I have very ecletic taste in music so I get it
08:52 AM skunkworks: there is a local cake cover band - actually quite good.
08:53 AM skunkworks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f9rCUQjmkxU
08:54 AM skunkworks: best remake ever
09:20 AM FinboySlick: skunkworks: Have you heard of pornosonic? Groovy tracks from old 70s porn films with intros by Ron Jeremy. It might push a few of the right buttons.
09:21 AM FinboySlick: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6kxau0ePlg <-- One of my favorites.
09:24 AM skunkworks: uh - wow
09:24 AM FinboySlick: The intros are pretty silly, but the music is quite nice.
10:01 AM jelly-home is now known as jelly
10:02 AM cradek: skunkworks: how could I have never seen a cake video before today?
10:06 AM skunkworks: cradek, my favorite... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5KmB8Laemg
10:07 AM cradek: fingernails that shine like justice!
10:08 AM cradek: jeez it's 21 years ago
10:08 AM skunkworks: scary
10:10 AM skunkworks: heh - compiling a kernel makes this laptops fan run full bore.. :)
10:10 AM cradek: omg haha "it sounds like some supergirl that some feminist would approve of or something, ehhh"
10:10 AM skunkworks: :) - they seem to make fun of themselves..
10:12 AM skunkworks: and for some levity.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aCOVyVxC_QM
10:15 AM FinboySlick: skunkworks: Was it you who (a while back) were compensating for thermal expansion of your spindle in software?
10:16 AM skunkworks: FinboySlick, yes
10:17 AM skunkworks: FinboySlick, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-CdFd2Zakc
10:22 AM FinboySlick: That's just so cool.
10:24 AM Jymmm: skunkworks: Um, no coolant to keep the spindle from getting hot?
10:24 AM skunkworks: Jymmm, nope. oil - but that gets hot too :)
10:25 AM gregcnc: Spindle cooler was optional in 1860
10:25 AM skunkworks: 1960
10:25 AM gregcnc: ok not that old
10:25 AM Jymmm: skunkworks: Are you talking the spindle itself? The tooling get hot? the spindle motor getting hot?
10:26 AM skunkworks: the drawing for the circuit cards and stuff - have 62ish dates. But I think the machine was delivered in 68
10:27 AM skunkworks: Jymmm, it is mainly the spindle bearings get hot. they are probably 10 inches in diameter
10:28 AM skunkworks: and 2500rpm was its top range. - it seems to not go over about 120ishf
10:28 AM Jymmm: skunkworks: ah, ok. just toss em in some salt water ;)
10:29 AM Jymmm: skunkworks: ...and pretend it's an ice cream maker =)
10:30 AM skunkworks: we occationally run it at 3krpm. but it just feels wrong. Poor thing
10:30 AM skunkworks: now that we have the matsuura that does 10k - the k&t usually stays under 2500rpm
10:31 AM archivist: use thinner oil at high speed :)
10:31 AM gregcnc: "warming up" a machine is normal
10:32 AM gregcnc: new high accuracy machines claim to comp for machine casting temperatures
10:34 AM IchGucksLive: hi
10:34 AM IchGucksLive: iv seen mashines dieing at warm up
10:35 AM gregcnc: sometimes they don't even power up?
10:35 AM Jymmm: IchGucksLive: that's what "bigger hammers" are for
10:36 AM IchGucksLive: agree last time bevor holiday a Heidenhein 135st did work fine and first week of new school year nothing but the power klick
10:37 AM gregcnc: you don't have to comp for temp then, win - win?
10:37 AM IchGucksLive: i mesure all power into the control and on the plate itself but nothing not a single led
10:37 AM skunkworks: The K&T is pretty awesome - but the Y axis has growth also. as the spindle gets warm - so does the castings all the way down. 99% of that would be taken care of if we put a scale on Y.
10:39 AM IchGucksLive: i will try to make a good 3axis out of the heavy steel block
10:40 AM IchGucksLive: as it has a full manuell mode i neend only to find the trigger pin
10:40 AM IchGucksLive: then highjack the hand weels with timingbelt 8Nm Steppers
10:42 AM IchGucksLive: i never came to this as i only go forward and trust the hardware as mesurerd
10:42 AM IchGucksLive: BUT is there a way to drive the steppers with the mashine internal encoders
10:42 AM IchGucksLive: glass scale bars from 1981
10:43 AM IchGucksLive: the DRO mesurer scales now drop in price
10:44 AM IchGucksLive: so it woudt be nice if there is a thinking on getting low cost effectiv stepeprs accuracy
10:44 AM gregcnc: called servos
10:44 AM IchGucksLive: into lvnv
10:44 AM IchGucksLive: servos are 10 times the stepper price
10:45 AM IchGucksLive: and a 1m glas scale on 20um is only 60 USD
10:46 AM IchGucksLive: gregcnc: a 100W servo also needs good gearing so more costs
10:46 AM gregcnc: what kind of machine again?
10:46 AM IchGucksLive: Maho 400p
10:47 AM IchGucksLive: its a single axis controlled
10:48 AM gregcnc: and you want 20um resolution
10:48 AM IchGucksLive: now it got that encoders
10:49 AM IchGucksLive: the mashine is so old that at that time no control made a 2axis move at all
10:50 AM gregcnc: if you only need minimal performance ok
10:50 AM IchGucksLive: no need more then 0,05mm accuracy
10:51 AM IchGucksLive: it had full manuell control for the old guys to work on
10:51 AM IchGucksLive: heidenhein charges 1500 euros for a repair change
10:52 AM IchGucksLive: therfor i can buy a TC haas vf2
10:52 AM gregcnc: for 1500eu?
10:52 AM IchGucksLive: yes very okd supply as from GM
10:52 AM gregcnc: scrap?
10:52 AM IchGucksLive: used
10:53 AM IchGucksLive: think of how many cars going out every day at GM worldwiode
10:53 AM IchGucksLive: and all gearing stuff made in germany got to one of this
10:54 AM IchGucksLive: they usaly throw them at 10month use even shorter
10:55 AM gregcnc: sure
10:56 AM gregcnc: detroit is buried in machines that are replaced annaully
10:56 AM IchGucksLive: as the mashines are paid off they sell on time issue at 1500 take off 10-11am at DAY
10:56 AM IchGucksLive: agree on that
10:57 AM IchGucksLive: https://www.maschinensucher.de/
10:57 AM IchGucksLive: 133000 today at take away
10:57 AM gregcnc: your a lot of fun
10:57 AM gregcnc: you're even
10:58 AM IchGucksLive: 2654mills
10:59 AM gregcnc: half are listed by more than one agent
11:04 AM IchGucksLive: we will see how it comes out
11:04 AM gregcnc: are you goint to put steppers on the haas too?
11:04 AM IchGucksLive: no this runs perfect
11:05 AM IchGucksLive: the maho got a 60V DC motor on a gear and 6 couplers to get the axis moving
11:05 AM IchGucksLive: 2 couplers per Axis
11:05 AM IchGucksLive: forward and reverse with reverse gearing
11:05 AM IchGucksLive: as i said fully manuall
11:06 AM IchGucksLive: one motor drives all
11:06 AM IchGucksLive: switching between axis chage takes up to 20 seconds
11:07 AM IchGucksLive: enoph time to drill a hole on full auto mode
11:07 AM IchGucksLive: all gone as no control function
11:10 AM IchGucksLive: http://www.ebay.de/itm/TNC135-S-im-Austausch-Exchange-Service-Steuerung-von-Heidenhain-/381204865843
11:10 AM IchGucksLive: im off for a coffee break later
12:20 PM Cromaglious_: going to make a CV joint remover for mini's for my brother
12:29 PM Crom: hmmm that's weird
12:31 PM Cromaglious_: ahhh didn't relize that machine size had quasselcore running on it
12:33 PM IchGucksLive: hi back
12:56 PM miss0r: I just read the mail from dmg mori. apparently an original spare ballscrew assembly for my mill will set me back 3995EUR
12:56 PM miss0r: now thats a slap to the face
12:57 PM IchGucksLive: miss0r: get you a ordany C7 for less
12:58 PM IchGucksLive: gloops: how went the testing
12:58 PM gloops: i just got 2 top china 16mm ballscrews C7 for £68, made in 12th most accurate factory in the world! lol
12:59 PM gloops: fine Ichs, just working too much atm to get much time on the machine
12:59 PM IchGucksLive: gloops: that might be messured C5
12:59 PM DaViruz: miss0r: how's the surface grinder working? :)
12:59 PM miss0r: DaViruz: Excellent :) like all my manual equipment :)
01:00 PM miss0r: at the moment i'm having issues with my cnc stuff
01:00 PM gloops: Ichs what do you think of 16mm ballscrew at 1500mm?
01:00 PM DaViruz: automation is a lot of work.. :)
01:00 PM gloops: or how long would you go with 16mm
01:00 PM IchGucksLive: gloops: no way
01:00 PM gloops: whip?
01:00 PM IchGucksLive: i stay below 800mm
01:01 PM gloops: hmm, was thinking of going for a longer y
01:01 PM skunkworks: spin the nut
01:01 PM IchGucksLive: best ide to go
01:01 PM IchGucksLive: but thne yoiu need to move the motor
01:01 PM gloops: skunk would work but i want simplest build
01:02 PM IchGucksLive: go for a 2005
01:02 PM gloops: plus you still have some pressure on the screw from the belt
01:02 PM miss0r: lol... looking at the prospect of ordering a 4000EUR replacement while scraping out old rubber from the stainless brackets for the wipers, and replacing them with sheet rubber....
01:02 PM IchGucksLive: gloops: no presure
01:02 PM gloops: Ichs you gotta tension the belt
01:02 PM IchGucksLive: the nut is inside double bearing
01:03 PM gloops: i see
01:03 PM gloops: sounds expensive though
01:03 PM IchGucksLive: and the holder is fixed to table with hiwin on side
01:03 PM miss0r: DaViruz: I still feel a bit bad buying that grinder right under you nose
01:03 PM gloops: ill look to see what is about for that on ebay
01:03 PM IchGucksLive: gloops: you got to bite somwhere in your pocket budget
01:04 PM DaViruz: miss0r: as you should!
01:04 PM Jymmm: I want to hang a 12" granite tile on the fence, What adhesive would you suggest to attach a wire fastener to the bac of the tile that would withstand the environment for years?
01:04 PM gloops: well, some cheap gear about if you search
01:04 PM DaViruz: miss0r: nah, i'm not seeing myself having room for one for quite a while
01:05 PM IchGucksLive: gloops: http://www.cnc-discount.de/epages/62924595.sf/de_DE/?ObjectPath=/Shops/62924595/Categories/2005_Kugelumlaufspindel
01:05 PM DaViruz: i think it's great it came to a fellow linuxcnc'er
01:05 PM miss0r: DaViruz: If you are ever in these parts and need something ground, just look me up ;)
01:05 PM gloops: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1-anti-backlash-25mm-ballscrew-RM2505-1000mm-C7-BK-BF15-bearing-support-CNC-/161212759734?
01:06 PM gloops: i metre 25mm - 90 quid!
01:06 PM gloops: i dont know how they do it for this money
01:06 PM IchGucksLive: cool price
01:07 PM gloops: allegedly +-50 over 300mm
01:07 PM IchGucksLive: this will drive you a perfect steel 3Kw
01:08 PM gloops: you could go 1400 with 25mm
01:08 PM IchGucksLive: shure its inside the steel here https://www.sorotec.de/shop/CNC-Portalfraesen/SRT-Portalfraesen-323/
01:11 PM gloops: Jymmm thick enough to drill - few 3/8ths screws maybe
01:12 PM IchGucksLive: gloops: http://www.ebay.de/itm/2-lead-screws-ball-screws-anti-backlash-ballscrew-RM2505-700-1200mm-C7-/181746230962
01:12 PM IchGucksLive: 1200
01:12 PM Jymmm: gloops: Need to use an adhesive (no drilling), just not sure silicone, epoxy, jbweld, liquid nails, etc.
01:13 PM IchGucksLive: tesa stripes Jymmm
01:13 PM IchGucksLive: 2pound per stripe
01:14 PM gloops: that is really cheap Ichs, but are they any good?
01:14 PM IchGucksLive: there are high delivery costs
01:14 PM IchGucksLive: on my side
01:14 PM gloops: yeah, even with that though, thats not bad
01:19 PM gloops: i guess they would be ok for wood anyway, depends if they are high maintenance etc
01:19 PM IchGucksLive: if you go wood only
01:20 PM IchGucksLive: so why ntot a TR
01:20 PM IchGucksLive: they are damm cheep and do the best
01:20 PM gloops: leadscrew?
01:20 PM IchGucksLive: yes
01:20 PM IchGucksLive: TR20x4
01:20 PM IchGucksLive: so you can go 0,01 in direct mode
01:20 PM gloops: more backlash and friction
01:21 PM IchGucksLive: agree on that
01:21 PM IchGucksLive: but i expirenced a 0,03 backlash
01:21 PM gloops: over here a nut is about £30 for 20mm
01:22 PM IchGucksLive: http://www.maedler.de/product/1643/gewindespindeln-muttern-keilwellen-keilnaben
01:22 PM IchGucksLive: http://www.maedler.de/product/1643/1620/2028/2031/trapezgewinde-spindeln-eingaengig-rechts-stahl-laenge-2m
01:23 PM IchGucksLive: its 2meters for 30Euros
01:23 PM IchGucksLive: and they are up to 3meters
01:24 PM IchGucksLive: no endwork at all needed
01:24 PM IchGucksLive: as they fit the UCP
01:24 PM IchGucksLive: and onlky the hole in the timingbelt gear is your mashining
01:24 PM IchGucksLive: works gread
01:25 PM IchGucksLive: THIS mashines are build that way https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5v74lU3KUI
01:25 PM IchGucksLive: only a handdrill is needed
01:25 PM IchGucksLive: all other stuff is a precice wood table saw
01:26 PM IchGucksLive: but the plan can also be mashined by the Wood stores wall saw
01:26 PM IchGucksLive: maybe meven more precice
01:27 PM IchGucksLive: its that damm stiff i never thought about at 400mm Zmove
01:28 PM IchGucksLive: the whole mashine has been 1780 Euros including Eelktronics and VFD 1.5kw
01:29 PM IchGucksLive: ok im off Gn8
01:29 PM IchGucksLive: gloops: calculate and think of need
01:29 PM IchGucksLive: if your Z is more then 150mm forget about ALU
01:30 PM IchGucksLive: and go cheep
01:30 PM gloops: deflection over 150mm?
01:31 PM gloops: i have thought of a clamping system for when z axis is only being used in lower 50 mm, - clamp the top up with bolts - as carriage wont be travelling up that high
01:33 PM DaViruz: archivist: do you know of any good reference book on gear design? specifically worm gear trains
01:58 PM Flipp__: anyone have experience with Logan lathes?
02:01 PM miss0r: I would make an awfull surgent. I just forgot a screwdriver inside my cnc, and put covers over it
02:07 PM miss0r: Do any of you guys know where I can have a harmonica way cover made? preferably one with armor plating
02:08 PM SpeedEvil: What calibre of round does it need to defeat?
02:11 PM miss0r: SpeedEvil: If that was directed at me, I don't know what you are asking
02:11 PM SpeedEvil: 'armor plating'
02:11 PM SpeedEvil: nvm
02:13 PM miss0r: ahh.. right. heh
02:15 PM miss0r: man my hands are killing me. hardened chips everywhere
02:15 PM SpeedEvil: Gloves don't help?
02:16 PM miss0r: not the regular latex ones I would use for this
02:16 PM miss0r: I even had one stick through a leather glove while handeling some heavy stuff
02:16 PM gloops: gloves can be dodgy near machines
02:17 PM SpeedEvil: Gloves can be dodgy, if you touch the moving parts.
02:17 PM miss0r: no moving parts at the moment :) otherwise I would never use gloves
02:17 PM SpeedEvil: But essential in some cases for cleaning.
02:17 PM gloops: well, what about some of those butchers chain mail goves
02:18 PM miss0r: gloops: only good for sharp edges. not a million small knives
02:18 PM gregcnc: how big are these chips? I like the shop vac and a brush
02:19 PM miss0r: gregcnc: small enough to get sucked up with a vacuum. I take 99% of them that way. Apparently I use my hands for the remaining 1%
02:19 PM miss0r: They are glued in place with cutting oil'n such
02:20 PM SpeedEvil: scraper can help lots
02:20 PM SpeedEvil: brass scraper + vacuum
02:20 PM miss0r: Well - no matter the reason for me being inside the machine like this, it was well overdue for a good thorough cleaning
02:20 PM gloops: you know you can toughen the skin on your hands
02:20 PM roycroft: chain maille gloves are not useful for tasks requiring dexterity
02:21 PM roycroft: you can hang onto something big with one
02:21 PM miss0r: SpeedEvil: Absolutly. The places I am messing around at the moment are not accessible normally. the chips find a way thou
02:21 PM gloops: the old boxers used urine
02:21 PM roycroft: but youcan't really pick things up and manipulate them
02:21 PM miss0r: gloops: Here I was thinking I had pretty tough skin...
02:21 PM gloops: and bricklayers, comes up like hard leather
02:21 PM miss0r: I've never found a use for chainmail gloves in a shop
02:22 PM roycroft: you don't do any wood carving then :)
02:22 PM roycroft: a brass glove is best for that
02:22 PM miss0r: roycroft: that is correct :] Althou I have done a few projects on this X-Carve that was given to me for free(free is an important fact, yes - I would never spend money on it)
02:23 PM roycroft: when you wear a ss glove for wood carving and the carving tool slips the glove will usually chip or dull it
02:23 PM miss0r: better than loosing a finger.. even if you did spend good time sharpening it
02:24 PM roycroft: yes, which is the purpose of wearing such a glove
02:24 PM gloops: not been a prolific carver but over years of general joinery, my fingers are pretty knarled with scar tissue heh
02:24 PM roycroft: but if you make/purchase a brass one it protects your hand just as well and is less prone to damaging the edge of the carving tool
02:24 PM gloops: got a nice chisel wound on one thumb, the rest just blend in now
02:24 PM miss0r: roycroft: I build this 18" subwoofer enclosure for my home cinema: http://picpaste.com/20160921_002118-y1T09M2K.jpg
02:25 PM roycroft: the best thing, of course, is to use razor-sharp carving tools and good carving techniques such that the tool is unlikely to slip
02:25 PM roycroft: but you never know when there's going to be some hidden grain change or void/flaw in the wood
02:26 PM miss0r: I guess that makes sense. I don't see myself doing any serious wood working anytime soon.
02:26 PM gloops: just that moments lack of concentration, cut towards body part - slip
02:26 PM roycroft: nice, miss0r
02:26 PM roycroft: what did you use to make the finger joints?
02:26 PM roycroft: table saw?
02:26 PM miss0r: roycroft: I'm proud to say that I didn't use a single screw in the construction of that
02:26 PM roycroft: router jig?
02:27 PM miss0r: roycroft: a 3mm endmill. and then I just licked the corner radius with a file
02:27 PM * roycroft has a nice incra jig, and uses that for finger joints sometimes, but ends up using a table saw most of the time
02:28 PM roycroft: i never do dovetail joints on the incra jig though - i have a leigh d4 that i use for that, unless i'm hand cutting dovetails
02:28 PM miss0r: I fear dovetail joints :) I will have a go at it at some point never theless
02:28 PM roycroft: i started hand cutting dovetails in the '70s
02:28 PM miss0r: this is a video of the hopeless(althou somewhat upgraded) x-carve doing a site of the case: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B51cA8Udo5i7UnVVb0ZIRWh1LUU
02:29 PM roycroft: i've been doing it for a while ):
02:29 PM miss0r: its a google drive video, don't know if you support it
02:29 PM roycroft: the leigh jig lets me lay them out any way i want, as far as spacing, and it's a lot faster than hand cutting, so i use that for most dovetails
02:29 PM miss0r: I have nothing but respect for people whom know their trade
02:29 PM roycroft: unless i want to use a non-standard angle, in which case i have to hand cut them
02:30 PM * roycroft avoids anything having to do with google whenever possible
02:30 PM miss0r: can't blame'ya. But I do find google drive to be a treat
02:32 PM roycroft: i run an isp, and self-host my services at our data center, so i have the luxury of having easy alternatives to cloud services
02:33 PM roycroft: when i retire i'm not sure what i'll do about that kind of stuff
02:33 PM roycroft: mayhap i'll just take retirement as an opportunity to unplug and live in a world without the internet :)
02:33 PM miss0r: hehe. I manage a few servers scattered across Denmark, and I have my own webserver for my small buisness in the basement, but I have never bothered to make it easily accessible from my android phone, so google drive it is
02:34 PM miss0r: Better get back to putting the CNC together. I have a job pending
02:34 PM roycroft: yeah, i need to get back to working on the cnc conversion of my mini-mill soon
02:35 PM roycroft: sadly, the head is making bad noises and there's a lot of vibration and runout at the spindle, so i fear i'm going to need to replace some bearings before i can do much more of anything with that machine
03:11 PM gloops: well i will proceed with my original router design, welded box section frame, 2 screws on 1 metre X, 1 screw on Y - hopefully to cut 1250mm (width of standard sheet) 425oz nemas on all, breakout board drivers old PC, i reckon 200 inch per min, 300mm Z + rotary axis along Y
03:13 PM gloops: ill be raking it in when this is built, this time next year ill have 6 machines
03:17 PM archivist: DaViruz, this search gets the books/docs I have on gears http://www.collection.archivist.info/searchv13.php?searchstr=621.833
03:21 PM archivist: DaViruz, see SDP SI gear catalogue that has a very good design section
03:25 PM DaViruz: thanks a lot
03:26 PM DaViruz: a friend of mine is working on producing gears with photolitography methods, not quite at nanomachine-scale, but very small
03:28 PM archivist: as you get smaller, people take liberties with correctness
03:29 PM archivist: and at the same time surface finish can be harder to get right
03:29 PM DaViruz: i don't know much about their production method, and he can't tell me much either
03:30 PM gregcnc: typical i can't tell you what we're doing but tell us how to do it scenario
03:31 PM DaViruz: not really, he just asked me for reference material on gear geometry and design
03:32 PM gregcnc: khk has a handbook, but iirc it was were the spd came from
03:33 PM archivist: or back to the old maths with the Buckingham stuff or texts on involutometry
03:36 PM archivist: I think SDP mention some of theirs is from Gleason
04:00 PM Deejay: gn8
04:16 PM JT-Shopp: dang you can see the rain drops on this HikVision camera!
04:17 PM JT-Shopp: looks like tiny meteors streaking down lol
04:17 PM JT-Shopp is now known as JT-Shop
04:18 PM gloops: https://www.cnccookbook.com/loved-cnc-controls-2017-survey-results/
04:18 PM gloops: most loved cnc controls
04:18 PM JT-Shop: I never take much stock in surveys
04:19 PM gloops: In the Hobby category, PathPilot / LinuxCNC took the top honors for Customer Satisfaction.
04:20 PM TurBoss: hello
04:21 PM TurBoss: I have a stepper motor that vibrates when the driver (a4988) is powered but not receiving steps
04:21 PM TurBoss: what can i check ?
04:22 PM TurBoss: If motor wiring was wrong it should not move if no steps are send?
04:22 PM TurBoss: or vibrate
04:22 PM andypugh: Is the power supply adequate? Perhaps the PSU is undersized and passing ripple through?
04:22 PM TurBoss: could be noisE?
04:23 PM andypugh: Hi chaps! I got back from Las Vegas just in time, I think. No way I would have been involved, but I bet all the fun has evaporated.
04:24 PM sync: haha
04:24 PM TurBoss: checking...
04:24 PM TurBoss: thanks
04:30 PM andypugh: sync: Can STMBL drive Yaskawa sercos with their absolute encoders?
04:30 PM andypugh: (servos, not Sercos. That was a typo)
04:32 PM andypugh: https://github.com/rene-dev/stmbl/wiki/conf Says yes.
04:34 PM gloops: TurBoss yes wrong wiring
04:35 PM gloops: i had this first time i wired mine up, just cant remember what it was now - wiring issue
04:35 PM andypugh: Wrong wiring when not moving shouldn’t actually cause vibration.
04:35 PM andypugh: When moving, definitely.
04:36 PM gloops: well, depends what is meant by vibrating, definately buzzing mine were
04:36 PM JT-Shop: hey phipli
04:40 PM gloops: simple 4 wire steppers TurBoss - simple 4 wire stepper motors?
04:42 PM andypugh: Probably worth checking that the A and B pairs truly are pairs (with a resistance meter). Power-off the drives before you disconnect the motor.
04:43 PM TurBoss: ok thanks
04:43 PM TurBoss: I think that I have figured
04:43 PM TurBoss: noise
04:44 PM gloops: well, you can check the pairs easy, just by turn the motor, twist any pair together, turn shaft with fingers - if you got a pair its harder to turn
04:44 PM gloops: if its same - not a pair
04:45 PM gloops: doubt noise would do that myself, but no electrician
04:45 PM andypugh: True, and that is the best way to figure out pair polarity on 8-wire motors.
04:46 PM sync: andypugh: yes
04:46 PM andypugh: sync: I already told him yes. But I feel a bit daft recommending the STMBL when I have no idea how someone can get one.
04:47 PM andypugh: (I am tempted to get a batch from Seeed who are bribing me with a $50 PCBA voucher)
04:47 PM sync: haha
04:49 PM gloops: Arbitrary first wiring order 1 2 4 8
04:49 PM gloops: Switch end pair 1 2 8 4
04:49 PM gloops: Switch middle pair 1 8 2 4
04:49 PM andypugh: Reading through a 3 week backlog of LinuxCNC forum. Now down to only 4 pages of unread messages.
04:54 PM gloops: pondering wooden gears https://postimg.org/image/1uh2lkbtm3/
05:04 PM Tom_L: seeed boards aren't 'top notch' like you would expect
05:04 PM Tom_L: poor adhesion and registration
05:06 PM andypugh: I don’t expect “top notch” at the price. And the price is very affordable.
05:06 PM andypugh: I have had no complaints at all about them so far.
05:24 PM Tom_L: i've used them in the past but have seen better quality. the boards did work

05:36 PM HighInBC: does anyone make a little box around their CNC to keep the dust in? I am trying to think of a cheap way to make one
05:36 PM HighInBC: a big cardboard box might be enough I guess
05:37 PM JT-Shop: I built a shop around mine... didn't help
05:44 PM MarkusBec: i have a room for the cnc :)
05:44 PM MarkusBec: easy solution :)
05:46 PM phipli: Hey JT-Shop
06:10 PM JT-Shop: hey, I have a strange thing with my arduino the door stops part way down
06:11 PM JT-Shop: I'll copy you in the am with the short bit of code to see if you spot something
06:16 PM phipli: Sure thing - I'll have a look after work tomorrow
06:16 PM phipli: anyhow
06:16 PM phipli: should be heading to bed now
06:16 PM JT-Shop: almost tomorrow for you
06:17 PM phipli: it is
06:17 PM phipli: night folks
06:17 PM * phipli exits stage right
06:32 PM andypugh: Yay! All forum posts read (and, where appropriate, answered. Though often not in depth)
06:33 PM JT-Shop: you're a super hero
06:38 PM andypugh: I’m an idiot.
09:05 PM Vitran: I got the PLC to work! Now just got to get the rest of the machine to run.
10:43 PM CaptHindsight: Cylindrical Inkjet Printer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JhNUXG-XjBw&feature=youtu.be
10:45 PM Tom_L: kinda neat
10:46 PM Vitran: Wonder the price tag for such a thing
10:47 PM CaptHindsight: silly high
10:47 PM CaptHindsight: we've been doing for years with LCNC
10:48 PM CaptHindsight: i think the Rockwell conveyor is >$100K
10:49 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dFYNSZUntgc from 2008
10:49 PM CaptHindsight: they are limited to cylinders since their maths are just a plane wrapped around a cylinder
10:50 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKoZcNLYSsg had one in 2009 for ~$20k
10:51 PM CaptHindsight: used a modified Epson printer
10:52 PM Tom_L: usually done with screen printing isn't it?
10:52 PM Tom_L: faster too
10:53 PM CaptHindsight: that printer looks really slow in the video
10:53 PM CaptHindsight: it should be able to print so fast that the ink might fly off
10:54 PM CaptHindsight: no setup with inkjet vs silk screen
10:54 PM CaptHindsight: inkjet can also include variable data, barcodes (different print for each part)
10:56 PM CaptHindsight: since it's just a plane wrapped around a cylinder it's like printing on a flat surface
10:59 PM Tom_L: they could automate the UV cure better i think
11:00 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8xNb2Qswn0c servo conveyors
11:05 PM CaptHindsight: I want one to print cryptic messages on 3d print pancakes
11:05 PM CaptHindsight: print/printed
11:07 PM CaptHindsight: come to think of it why even have the conveyor?
11:08 PM CaptHindsight: place glass on spindle, print cure, remove glass
11:08 PM CaptHindsight: and they only have one color per printhead and stop at each printhead to rotate the glassware
11:10 PM CaptHindsight: synchronizing a spindle is trivial though
11:43 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oBXpga2UsF4 heh stepper driven
11:44 PM CaptHindsight: chirp chirp chirp
