12:38 AM MrHindsight is now known as CaptHindsight
12:40 AM CaptHindsight: 25-50um is a tight fit
12:40 AM rue_shop3: hmm
12:42 AM CaptHindsight: how is the shaft joined? what is it joined to?
12:43 AM rue_shop3: oh, its complex
12:43 AM rue_shop3: I have a synchropulley that I need to adapt to a smaller shaft while retaining a washer on one side
12:43 AM rue_shop3: the bonus is that its aluminum
12:44 AM rue_shop3: I have an idea, so here goes 4 hours of machining!
12:45 AM CaptHindsight: how thick is the pulley?
12:48 AM rue_shop3: about 3.83mm
12:50 AM CaptHindsight: thin
12:51 AM CaptHindsight: can you add a setscrew?
12:51 AM rue_shop3: nope :)
12:51 AM rue_shop3: that would make it easy
12:52 AM CaptHindsight: or have a screw at the end of the shaft?
12:53 AM CaptHindsight: I'd need a drawing the assembly
12:55 AM rue_shop3: that too would make it easy
12:55 AM rue_shop3: I'm reducing from 11.3mm to 5mm
12:55 AM rue_shop3: I have a setscrew from the adapter to the 5mm, but am gonna have to pressfit the rest
12:56 AM rue_shop3: to make it more fun the hole in the shoulder washer for the pulley is 13mm
12:56 AM rue_shop3: so I have a step in there too
12:57 AM CaptHindsight: interference fit with splines
12:57 AM CaptHindsight: or a key
01:00 AM rue_shop3: sideways bit drag carrige?
01:00 AM rue_shop3: its low rpm low torque
01:00 AM rue_shop3: ... aaaand I lost my pulley...
01:01 AM rue_shop3: found it, damn pixies
01:03 AM rue_shop3: oooh I should have given myself a grace step into the press fit
01:06 AM rue_shop3: ok that wasn't an interfearance-fit that was a peel-fit
01:06 AM * rue_shop3 checks his eccentricity
01:08 AM rue_shop3: yup, I'm still eccentric, the project isn't tho
01:13 AM rue_shop3: :)
01:14 AM rue_shop3: sweet, its not even midnight yet
01:15 AM rue_shop3: mmm, 5mm bit overdid it a little
02:24 AM XXCoder: https://youtu.be/8YwlenA4bdg interesting
02:28 AM Deejay: moin
03:15 AM IchGucksLive: morning from germany
03:16 AM XXCoder: hey
03:16 AM IchGucksLive: XXCoder: you need some sleep
03:16 AM XXCoder: nah not yet its just 12 am
03:16 AM IchGucksLive: its getting a nice day here so im off to harvest some corn ;-)
03:17 AM IchGucksLive: on my age im not goner make it till midnight
03:17 AM IchGucksLive: off later
03:55 AM billykid: hi
03:58 AM XXCoder: hey
03:59 AM billykid: in in the spindle section encoder_scale is ppr or cpr?
03:59 AM billykid: ini
04:01 AM fabla: Hi friends, I am about to connect electronics for a cnc today
04:01 AM fabla: plz have a reference to https://discuss.inventables.com/t/please-help-tb6600-wiring/33068/16
04:01 AM archivist: encoders often confuse, there are edges and slots, there are two edges per slot, therefore 4 edges for and ab encoder which also gives direction
04:02 AM billykid: 500 slot
04:02 AM billykid: a+b+i+
04:03 AM archivist: 2000 edges
04:03 AM billykid: 500 or 2000 ?
04:03 AM fabla: question is about the connection between the PSU which deliver 24V to the motor stepper driver in DC+
04:04 AM archivist: fabla, that site is unreadable in some browsers(mine) usually any driver comes with labels to which pin is dc+ etc
04:04 AM fabla: which voltage does the motor stepper driver deliever on the motor ?
04:04 AM fabla: in this case a nema 23 is connected
04:05 AM archivist: you can happily use a 5v motor on a 24v supply, the important thing is set the current, the driver limits the current
04:05 AM fabla: ok
04:06 AM fabla: this is the answer
04:06 AM fabla: i was niot sure
04:06 AM fabla: thanks
04:06 AM archivist: the higher voltage overcomes the inductance faster
04:07 AM fabla: ok thansk :)
04:07 AM fabla: I will make a video
04:07 AM fabla: maybe I can get linux cnc today to work
04:07 AM fabla: cu all
05:02 AM jthornton: morning
05:02 AM XXCoder: hey jt
05:03 AM XXCoder: wanted to ask you something but cant remember what it is heh
05:03 AM jthornton: chickens spent the night in the coop
05:03 AM jthornton: I know that feeling often
05:03 AM XXCoder: sadly me too heh
05:19 AM jthornton: time to turn on the chicken light and let them out... they are awake and ready
05:19 AM XXCoder: yay
05:24 AM jthornton: now to get them to come outside lol
05:25 AM jthornton: henry is looking out the door now
05:27 AM jthornton: and there he goes out :)
05:28 AM jthornton: and back in lol
05:32 AM jthornton: XXCoder: I knew what I wanted to ask you are you interested in helping a guy in Seattle set up a LinuxCNC mill?
05:33 AM XXCoder: hmm dunno, know some basics but far from skilled
05:33 AM jthornton: I think he is a machinist and knows nothing about linuxcnc
05:34 AM * jthornton thinks it's time to bring out the secret chicken weapon to make chickens come out of the coop... the cricket jar
05:34 AM XXCoder: interesting. what is machine, besides mill
05:34 AM jthornton: dunno, I can ask him
05:37 AM XXCoder: honestly may take few weeks, starting to enter tough time tomorrow and afterwards
05:37 AM XXCoder: lots stuff to do in very unreasonable short time
06:17 AM jthornton: and the last one finally came out of the coop
06:17 AM jthornton: and everyone knows where food and water is now
06:18 AM jthornton: I guess I'll try my 4 channel relay board and wire up the motor like this http://www.crydom.com/en/tech/newsletters/jan%202013%20-%20solid%20statements%20-%20dc%20motor%20reversing.pdf
06:19 AM XXCoder: I really want to learn how to use relays
06:20 AM jthornton: with?
06:20 AM XXCoder: oh dunno yet
06:20 AM XXCoder: but I have few projects I wanna do anyway
06:20 AM XXCoder: like cnc plotter and farmbot
06:23 AM jthornton: one chicken went back in the coop
06:24 AM XXCoder: felt like homebody day eh heh
06:26 AM jthornton: looked more curious and was checking every nook cranny and corner out
06:26 AM jthornton: then went back out
06:29 AM XXCoder: :)
06:35 AM jthornton: do you mess with arduino's?
06:39 AM XXCoder: nah
06:39 AM archivist: does one admit playing with arduinos in public :)
06:39 AM XXCoder: thats why I somewhat doubt I will do some project using it and relays.
06:54 AM phipli: relay logic?
06:54 AM jthornton: hey phipli
06:54 AM phipli: hey JT
06:54 AM phipli: being in a slightly old fashioned industry, some of our electrical guys still have to do quite complex logic circuits with relays
06:55 AM phipli: 21st century fail
06:55 AM jthornton: dang relay board won't work for some reason :( was working in the shop so I'm switching to a 4 relay fwd rev circuit
06:55 AM XXCoder: phipli: sometimes older tech means it can last dang forever
06:55 AM jthornton: moved the chickens into the coop last night and they are all out in the inner yard eating drinking and pooping
06:55 AM phipli: do you have a picture of how you've wired it?
06:55 AM phipli: XXCoder, yeah - that is why we still use 1950s Locos
06:55 AM XXCoder: good for applications where it is expected to run for decades where no human can come up to it to fix it.
06:56 AM phipli: XXCoder, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Rail_Class_20
06:57 AM phipli: Those things are still commonly used to move nuclear flasks about
06:57 AM XXCoder: interesting
06:57 AM phipli: because they're basically a steam engine layout with only one cab, and only 1000hp, they're used in pairs, nose to nose
06:58 AM phipli: some of them have been modified to have a camera in the nose
06:58 AM phipli: with a screen in the cab
06:58 AM XXCoder: thats good idea
06:58 AM phipli: heh, this picture is in my local station : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Rail_Class_20#/media/File:HNRail_20311.jpg
07:00 AM phipli: those old things just keep going forever
07:01 AM phipli: every now and then, when it gets really hard to get spares, we just swap in a new engine. Not happened with the 20s yet. But we've re-engined a few of the other things
07:01 AM phipli: the 20s are from a group of locos that all have similar engines - originally made by English Electric
07:02 AM phipli: all the engines are similar and good, so there has been enough of a market for spares to keep them going
07:04 AM jthornton: did you manage to recover your files?
07:05 AM phipli: backed up my home folder - moving some things back at the moment
07:05 AM phipli: slowly
07:06 AM phipli: probably shouldn't have bothered tar-ing it
07:07 AM jthornton: dang door lock pulls so much juice I'm going to give it it's own power supply
07:07 AM jthornton: well so far this is working...
07:07 AM phipli: hum
07:07 AM phipli: does it need the juice to act?
07:07 AM phipli: try putting a resistor in line and see if it still works
07:08 AM phipli: drop the current a bit
07:08 AM archivist: solenoids like amps!
07:08 AM phipli: or feed it from a capacitor to smooth the power over a longer time
07:08 AM phipli: archivist, they're almost a short...
07:08 AM phipli: other than inductance
07:08 AM archivist: I know :)
07:08 AM jthornton: when it's on it draws the volts down to 7~
07:09 AM phipli: damn electromechanical components
07:09 AM archivist: we put a couple on a printer to move a ribbon
07:09 AM phipli: jthornton, ah - might be worth getting a central locking motor
07:09 AM phipli: they don't need to be powered other than when they're moving
07:09 AM phipli: cheap as chips
07:09 AM jthornton: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AOCAETQ
07:10 AM phipli: how long do you need to power it for?
07:10 AM jthornton: the gear motor does not move when not powered
07:10 AM jthornton: 30 seconds while the door open/close cycle is going on
07:11 AM archivist: or put an opto so you know the door has moved then release, much faster
07:11 AM jthornton: I don't understand
07:12 AM jthornton: phipli: I do have this I could steal from my charger https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06Y21KB96
07:12 AM phipli: OVERKILL
07:12 AM phipli: :)
07:12 AM archivist: dont need to hold the solenoid for whole cycle, just till door has moved
07:12 AM jthornton: hmm I have a half a case of them... I just wonder what voltage they are...
07:13 AM archivist: I had a chinese switcher here asplode, very funny
07:14 AM jthornton: archivist: the solenoid has to be on the whole cycle
07:14 AM gloops: new board arrives, yipee, putting last wires in...realised its the opposite parallel port fitting to the only cable i have...os
07:14 AM jthornton: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5BAgGpT7GwM
07:14 AM jthornton: see the video
07:14 AM gloops: now ive got to have another cup of tea, get changed go into town, find another cable or adaptor
07:14 AM archivist: cannot view yt on this box
07:15 AM jthornton: can you see an image?
07:15 AM archivist: yes
07:17 AM archivist: what yt shows me these days http://www.collection.archivist.info/archive/grabs/Screenshot-55.png
07:18 AM XXCoder: your youtube looks so much different than mine.
07:19 AM archivist: they just dont test on enough browsers
07:20 AM XXCoder: probably because I use combination of youtube plus and colorize this site! plugins
07:21 AM jthornton: http://gnipsel.com/images/chickens-2/chicken-lock-01.png
07:21 AM jthornton: http://gnipsel.com/images/chickens-2/chicken-lock-02.png
07:21 AM phipli: if the listing is correct
07:21 AM phipli: it is drawing 0.666666666666666666666666 (etc) amps at 12v
07:21 AM XXCoder: archivist: you relaly should get youtube plus. threate view is best. not full window but also not tiny window
07:22 AM jthornton: yea it says 8W... I wonder if it really is?
07:22 AM phipli: a current limiting resistor would actually have to be quite high power sadly, so you couldn't just use a regular 1/2 watt part
07:22 AM phipli: jthornton, you could stick a multi meter in line and see how much current it uses?
07:22 AM jthornton: I have a few ceramic resistors I used when building RPC's
07:23 AM phipli: if you have anything in the 10 to 15 ohm range, at about 6W it might be worth a try
07:23 AM jthornton: I have a rat shack 1a 12v power supply with a amp/volt readout
07:23 AM phipli: would ~ half the voltage and current
07:25 AM phipli: actually, 4W would do
07:25 AM phipli: forgot to include the new current
07:26 AM archivist: jt need a faster lift motor :)
07:27 AM jthornton: slow on purpose not to scare the chickens
07:27 AM archivist: a capacitor to take the surge then a holding current would/should work
07:28 AM jthornton: the surge is not the problem, it draws the power supply down to 7v
07:28 AM phipli: archivist, would struggle with the 30 seconds
07:28 AM archivist: the pull in has to be much larger current than hold, a few ms
07:31 AM jthornton: hmm liking this new code and using 4 relays to have fwd/rev on the motor
07:31 AM phipli: 4?
07:31 AM phipli: should only need two!
07:31 AM phipli: build a H bridge
07:31 AM jthornton: http://www.crydom.com/en/tech/newsletters/jan%202013%20-%20solid%20statements%20-%20dc%20motor%20reversing.pdf
07:31 AM jthornton: they are single pole double throw, the two that don't work are DPDT
07:32 AM phipli: ah right
07:32 AM phipli: that explains it
07:32 AM phipli: mine are wired like this : https://nvhs.files.wordpress.com/2012/12/deviatore_schema_funzionamento.jpg?w=584
07:33 AM jthornton: I just have K1 and K3 both connected to D10 and K2 and K4 connected to D11, one fwd one rev
07:33 AM phipli: with more care taken with normally open / closed than they have.
07:44 AM jthornton: those power resistors are 100 ohm 10w
07:45 AM phipli: if the power rating is really 8W, the coil is only an effective 18ohm (it is an inductance, not a resistance, but that will do for here)
07:45 AM phipli: so the voltage would be too low over the coil if you used 100ohm
07:46 AM jthornton: yea I have a few wall worts so I'll just put it on one by itself for now
07:47 AM jthornton: http://paste.ubuntu.com/25598940/
07:47 AM jthornton: now to test it out in the chicken yard :) it's almost light enough to turn the lights off
07:53 AM SpeedEvil: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lube-Bar-Jar-5-Litre/dp/B01M0YIKM4 For when you need readily available lubricants in the shop.
08:38 AM Tom_itx: jthornton i might suggest using one DPDT on your motors
08:38 AM Tom_itx: in case one contact sticks you won't have a direct short
08:39 AM Tom_itx: don't ask how i know :)
10:42 AM Tom_itx: oldschool: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UY4RZ-FEi6M
10:45 AM zeeshan: finally get to supervise the installation of cool stuff at work!
10:45 AM zeeshan: https://photos.app.goo.gl/pBXfcSrHjMfGRN7u1
10:45 AM zeeshan: Tom_itx: why you watching oldschool videos :)
10:45 AM Tom_itx: bored
10:46 AM zeeshan: https://photos.app.goo.gl/PVixGRJw6tn5CYRa2
10:46 AM Tom_itx: that junk lasted alot longer too
10:46 AM zeeshan: that main beam where the robot slides back and forth has to be straight within like 0.002"
10:46 AM zeeshan: per ft
10:56 AM Tom_itx: what is that for
10:56 AM zeeshan: see those strips of drywall?
10:56 AM zeeshan: https://www.foxgal.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/drywall-warehouse.jpg
10:56 AM gregcnc: you guys are milling drywall?
10:56 AM zeeshan: they need to be placed in certain locations
10:57 AM zeeshan: to allow drywall stacks like that
10:57 AM zeeshan: gregcnc: we saw it
10:57 AM zeeshan: thats actually the machine im working on
10:57 AM zeeshan: along with the sr eng
10:58 AM Tom_itx: mmm i get 404 on that first pic now
10:58 AM zeeshan: i unshared :P
10:58 AM Tom_itx: bum
10:58 AM zeeshan: <3 google images
12:27 PM IchGucksLive: hi
12:31 PM hazzy: hello IchGucks
12:33 PM IchGucksLive: ;-)
12:58 PM phipli: bah
12:58 PM phipli: I think I've identified the source of my problems
12:58 PM phipli: my msata drive seems to be playing up
12:58 PM IchGucksLive: first step to fixe it
12:58 PM phipli: and randomly corrupts things
12:59 PM phipli: this is my third OS install in 2 days
12:59 PM phipli: and I'm not in the habit of giving up and re-installing
12:59 PM phipli: things started going wrong on Thursday when my computer crashed during an update
12:59 PM phipli: I'm on another disk now...
12:59 PM phipli: to make sure it isn't the computer
01:00 PM phipli: anyway
01:00 PM phipli: dinner time
01:30 PM IchGucksLive: Gn8
04:46 PM Deejay: gn8
04:52 PM gloops: stupid logs, i wanted those super fast ally cutting vids greg posted
05:09 PM gloops: Capt do you have those uber quick aluminium milling links greg posted the other night in your log?
05:18 PM CaptHindsight: uber quick aluminium milling?
05:18 PM CaptHindsight: fast miiling machine videos?
05:19 PM CaptHindsight: milling even
05:20 PM CaptHindsight: gloops: ^^
05:21 PM gloops: yeah that was it
05:23 PM CaptHindsight: I don't see any. was it the day someone brought up the list of popular CNC software?
05:24 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Xl3-GNnrCg
05:29 PM gloops: hmm cant remember now, it might have been XXcoder who was commenting on them
05:38 PM JT-Shop: had a good BBQ sandwich today but 275 miles... it was worth the ride
05:39 PM CaptHindsight: hottest days of year here this week
05:39 PM JT-Shop: damn hot here too
05:39 PM CaptHindsight: how was the ride?
05:40 PM CaptHindsight: 275 each way or RT?
05:40 PM phipli: it was warm here... but mainly because I was manhandling an 8x4 mdf sheet
05:40 PM JT-Shop: nice mostly back roads up and down the Mississippi
05:41 PM JT-Shop: phipli: I sat down on a pad with the chickens in their new run and was covered with chickens in no time
05:41 PM CaptHindsight: there's a supper club in northern WI we go to that is ~300mi RT
05:41 PM phipli: :)
05:41 PM phipli: excellent
05:41 PM JT-Shop: after a while I started the cricket rodeo
05:41 PM CaptHindsight: worth the ride
05:42 PM phipli: JT-Shop, regarding the hole saw speed - yeah, it was too fast, but I was using a 30 year old drill with only "H" and "L"
05:42 PM phipli: and I had it on "L" :)
05:42 PM JT-Shop: yea we have a group of OTH biker couples we ride with
05:42 PM phipli: I'll dig out my other drill next time
05:42 PM JT-Shop: ah that that is a problem
05:42 PM JT-Shop: make sure you keep the teeth cleaned out often
05:42 PM JT-Shop: makes a huge difference on wood
05:43 PM JT-Shop: today it was just the BlueWing and RedWing
05:45 PM gloops: H+L lol
05:45 PM JT-Shop: hmm sunset is in 1:45 minutes... wonder when to try and heard them back into the coop
05:45 PM gloops: sounds a bit funny - but i bet there wont be many 30 year old drills in 30 years time
05:45 PM phipli: JT-Shop, weather looks ok tomorrow morning
05:46 PM phipli: will try to spend some time with the birds
05:46 PM JT-Shop: they just need to go back in once then they got it
05:46 PM phipli: might move their run.
05:46 PM CaptHindsight: just 60 YO and 1 year old :)
05:46 PM JT-Shop: is it portable?
05:46 PM phipli: gloops, I suspect there will be a few 60 year old drills in 30 years time
05:46 PM JT-Shop: CaptHindsight: 275 round trip
05:47 PM phipli: I love my old Makita
05:47 PM JT-Shop: I have one that must be 50 years old
05:47 PM CaptHindsight: I have a set of Milwaukee power tools from the early 80's
05:47 PM CaptHindsight: I broke the 90 deg drill recently
05:48 PM CaptHindsight: from abuse, but they still sell the gears
05:48 PM phipli: gloops : H+L and hammer - if you know how. Isn't labelled or anything :) quite stiff to rotate too so you really have to know it is there.
05:49 PM gloops: phipli and a sprained wrist if the bit gets stuck lol
05:49 PM JT-Shop: the old one I have is a no name 1/2" geared down real slow drill
05:49 PM phipli: JT-Shop, the run isn't /very/ potable - but you can move it by yourself with a bit of effort
05:50 PM JT-Shop: is it free standing ie you have to herd them from the coop to the run?
05:50 PM phipli: gloops, very much so - I like it because of the torque it has. Plus it goes through the tough bricks in this house really easily
05:51 PM JT-Shop: hmm Thursday night a cool front is coming through YEA! maybe some fall weather
05:51 PM phipli: JT-Shop, the run is connected to the coop
05:51 PM CaptHindsight: JT-Shop: yeah, back to highs in the 60's
05:51 PM phipli: the coop is a CNC'd (not by me) sheet of plastic in an arc
05:51 PM * JT-Shop needs to repair/replace 150' of field fence as soon as it gets cool enough to stop chiggers from attacking me
05:52 PM phipli: run is a similar shape
05:52 PM JT-Shop: I think I saw a photo of it but not sure
05:52 PM JT-Shop: btw, I'm ahead 2.x GB atm lol
05:56 PM phipli: found a picture
05:56 PM phipli: my drill is one of these : https://cdn.globalauctionplatform.com/513f0bc5-2e7b-4b5b-b62d-a5f000eebf33/c5479570-989b-4a72-c110-a78fd118a540/original.jpg
05:56 PM phipli: really well made
05:56 PM phipli: (mine is in better condition)
05:56 PM phipli: (and 240v)
05:57 PM phipli: rotating the funny collar behind the chuck switches between hammer and normal, the H + L switch on the handle is speeds
05:58 PM phipli: JT-Shop, once when I had to use mobile phone data and paid per meg, I ran all my traffic through compressed SSH tunnel
05:58 PM phipli: doesn't help with some things that aren't compressed, but with the speed of computers compared to internet, it is a free bonus?
05:59 PM phipli: *aren't compressed = aren't easy to compress
06:04 PM JT-Shop: that had to be a pia
06:06 PM JT-Shop: phipli: your moving it for some fresh ground to fertilize?
06:07 PM JT-Shop: I'm planning on subdividing up the run with some areas with a raised net so the birds can crap through but can't eat the grass... when the grass is big enough move the cover to a new area
06:08 PM phipli: JT-Shop, wasn't too bad - I think I just did something like used a socks5 proxy through a ssh tunnel... or something... years ago. Had access to a high bandwidth server at the time so there wasn't really any speed issues. Actually effectively sped up my internet as well as saving money
06:08 PM JT-Shop: sounds Greek to me lol
06:08 PM phipli: heh
06:08 PM phipli: spent too much time with the wrong type of people at uni
06:09 PM JT-Shop: lol
06:09 PM phipli: most of my old unifriends maintain servers these days
06:09 PM JT-Shop: you going to cover the desk with some laminate?
06:09 PM phipli: handy for getting computer advice
06:09 PM phipli: not decided yet
06:09 PM phipli: place down the way has fake leather on a roll if we want to go fake-posh
06:09 PM JT-Shop: not too many computer nerds out in the Missouri woods lol
06:10 PM phipli: the missus is a senior database developer...
06:10 PM JT-Shop: actually fake leather is better consistency wise from the real product
06:10 PM phipli: if I ever need a database to keep track of my material stock...
06:10 PM JT-Shop: but for a desk I'd think a hard surface for the mouse...
06:11 PM JT-Shop: I used to write databases in FoxPro back in another lifetime
06:11 PM phipli: I'll have a wonder around the shops at some point
06:11 PM phipli: I live in a part of town with lots of hardware stores
06:12 PM JT-Shop: lucky you... well Poplar Bluff is growing quite nicely the last decade with lots of shops now
06:13 PM phipli: :)
06:13 PM phipli: this town is a little more run down than it used to be from loss of manufacturing
06:13 PM JT-Shop: I hope the manual chicken door works in the morning... didn't get a chance to install the nano and change the wiring
06:14 PM phipli: but still got a train factory, a jet engine factory and a factory that makes bits for subs (note we are a very long way from the sea)
06:14 PM JT-Shop: we have the worlds largest small engine plant and the worlds larges nail manufacturer
06:14 PM phipli: we have a toyota factory just out of town...
06:14 PM phipli: trying to thing what else
06:14 PM JT-Shop: that's what lorrys are for...
06:15 PM phipli: Don't think we have a lorry factory :)
06:15 PM JT-Shop: I used to work at a shipyard overhauling nuke subs a long time ago
06:15 PM phipli: there is a place that makes dinner plates though :)
06:15 PM JT-Shop: but they can haul the sub parts to the sea
06:16 PM phipli: yeah - I think they do the power packs (or whatever that industry calls them) here
06:16 PM JT-Shop: nuke subs?
06:16 PM phipli: yeah
06:16 PM JT-Shop: hmm I wonder what a power pack is in american...
06:17 PM phipli: https://www.rolls-royce.com/products-and-services/marine/about-marine/market-sectors/submarines.aspx
06:17 PM phipli: power pack is a train term
06:17 PM phipli: for a modular engine + associated stuff bolt on module
06:18 PM phipli: usually shove things like the engine, gearbox and generator on them
06:18 PM JT-Shop: for a train engine like an EMD (we use them on oil rigs) yea the power pack was a piston, liner and rod
06:18 PM phipli: interesting
06:18 PM phipli: was talking to the guys at work about that
06:18 PM JT-Shop: 900 rpm 845 cubic inch per cylinder
06:18 PM phipli: I knew we had the bigger EMD engine, but we have the smaller one you used as well
06:19 PM JT-Shop: usually had 3 16's and one 8 cylinder for backup power
06:19 PM phipli: would it be EMD 645?
06:20 PM JT-Shop: can't remember been a long time since I crawled inside one to clean the oil pan lol for an oil change
06:20 PM phipli: we also have the 710s
06:20 PM phipli: :)
06:20 PM JT-Shop: yea might have been 645 cu in per cyl
06:21 PM JT-Shop: dunno where 845 came from lol
06:22 PM phipli: the 710 we use is 3300hp in a 12 cylinder I think
06:22 PM JT-Shop: we could change a power pack in an hour or so, one time the roustabout put the wrong oil in the gen oil tank and when the motorman changed the oil on all three 16's it wasn't long before one blew the cover plates off
06:23 PM phipli: :s
06:23 PM JT-Shop: the circular bearing under the piston got too hot and ignited the oil fumes from the wrong oil... something about silver on the bearings of the EMD
06:23 PM phipli: hum
06:23 PM phipli: yeah
06:23 PM phipli: the EMDs like zinc free oil
06:23 PM JT-Shop: anyway 24hs a day till 2 were back running
06:23 PM JT-Shop: yep
06:24 PM JT-Shop: then back to drilling for oil
06:24 PM phipli: (I do the oil sample results analysis for a client - spend a lot of time staring at oil elemental contents!)
06:25 PM JT-Shop: we brought back oil samples each crew change, I still have the sample suction thingy
06:25 PM phipli: a lot of people only use zinc free now even if they have a mixed fleet
06:25 PM phipli: because it works in things that don't need it
06:26 PM JT-Shop: this was mid to late 70's
06:26 PM phipli: :)
06:26 PM JT-Shop: yea I'm that old lol
06:26 PM phipli: not as old as most of the Locos I deal with :)
06:26 PM JT-Shop: locos born on day before 1953?
06:27 PM phipli: heh
06:27 PM phipli: perhaps not - they got back to 1956 that I have anything to do with
06:27 PM phipli: but my dad is 1953 and he'd tell me that that isn't that old
06:28 PM JT-Shop: I used to think that 60 was old but not now lol
06:29 PM phipli: Looking around at the people I work with, it seems to be how life has treated you. There are 65 year olds that you'd mistake for a 50 yo
06:29 PM phipli: and 40 y-os that you'd mistake for a 60 y-o
06:29 PM JT-Shop: I was born on an island on the Aleutian Islands in a quonset hut in 1953 they had to fly a doctor in from Anchorage
06:30 PM JT-Shop: yea if you take care and work a lot you look and feel younger I think
06:31 PM phipli: we're starting to have issues with a serious wealth gap in this country
06:31 PM phipli: first time in years
06:31 PM JT-Shop: my oldest machine is a 1956 Ferguson F40
06:31 PM phipli: there are more people living in poverty here than at the end of the second world war
06:31 PM JT-Shop: I hope to squeak through our health care
06:32 PM JT-Shop: holy crap
06:32 PM phipli: a lot more money is going to a small number of people than has in a long time
06:33 PM JT-Shop: well it's tomorrow for you and I'm going to watch the chickens for a while
06:33 PM phipli: it is getting quite bad considering it is the UK of all places
06:33 PM JT-Shop: that is not a good thing
06:33 PM phipli: hopefully there will be a backlash and the government will be pulled in line
06:33 PM JT-Shop: yea a place where once the sun never set...
06:33 PM phipli: anyhow
06:33 PM phipli: yes - you are right. It is tomorrow :)
06:34 PM phipli: I'll get some pics of our birds for you tomorrow
06:34 PM JT-Shop: good to talk to you tonight
06:34 PM JT-Shop: ok me too
06:34 PM phipli: night
06:34 PM JT-Shop: say goodnight Gracie
07:19 PM gene83: any networking types still about?
07:58 PM gene83: the rock64 is booting, but the network can't get past the router, so obviously no networking guru's are about, so I'll ping you good folks tomorrow. gn8
08:00 PM CaptHindsight: can't passed what router? how is it connected?
08:01 PM CaptHindsight: what's not passing?
