01:27 AM IchGucksLive: morning from germay
02:26 AM Deejay: moin
05:01 AM jthornton: morning
05:01 AM XXCoder: hey
05:01 AM XXCoder: tomorrow, rain!
05:01 AM XXCoder: a first for summer
05:03 AM jthornton: clear up some of the ash?
05:03 AM XXCoder: yeah
05:03 AM XXCoder: hopefully I will finally get better
05:03 AM XXCoder: been awful last 2 weeks
05:07 AM jthornton: got the fence done yesterday, just need to make the gates and do some dirt work
05:08 AM XXCoder: dirt work not dirty work? good ;)
05:12 AM jthornton: yea got to level out a few places with some dirt
05:12 AM jthornton: then plant some grass seed
05:13 AM XXCoder: cool
05:18 AM jthornton: the chicken yard is big enough now I can put a bit of fence to keep the chickens out while the grass grows then rotate around the open areas
05:19 AM XXCoder: would chickens eat mower clippings?
05:20 AM jthornton: if they are fresh yes
05:20 AM MarcelineVQ: definitely, but I wouldn't feed them any clippings that have been bagged or in a pile
05:31 AM XXCoder: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BO8ffgDbM80
05:31 AM XXCoder: no idea what I watchexd...
05:31 AM XXCoder: but apparently it was one and only time disney and dali worked together
05:42 AM jthornton: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXAYa0o4dKU
05:44 AM jthornton: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XYtSqT-sh5Q
05:45 AM XXCoder: chicks all over you heh
05:45 AM jthornton: yea
05:46 AM Deejay: yo guys
05:46 AM XXCoder: hey
05:46 AM Deejay: har har. great video :D
05:46 AM Deejay: chicken on your head
05:46 AM jthornton: yea I cut out the part where he pooped on my hat lol
05:46 AM Deejay: lol
05:48 AM jthornton: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xUTDNfoAy3c
05:48 AM Deejay: hmm, the one has different color
05:48 AM jthornton: I built that log arch for my neighbor, was a pretty cool project
05:49 AM jthornton: yea the black and white one is a barred rock and is supposed to be a male, the rest are rhode island reds and supposed to be female
05:50 AM Deejay: ah!
05:51 AM jthornton: the first ones I got I asked for RIR and the clerk at the farm store didn't know one chicken from another and neither did I so I got 2 RIR and 2 barred rock
05:51 AM jthornton: when I figured out what I had I went back and got 2 more RIR
05:52 AM jthornton: the barred rock were the most friendly as you can see henry climbing on my head so when I ordered more after the chicken massacre I got one barred rock male
05:58 AM XXCoder: ny neice keeps chickens
05:58 AM XXCoder: pretty cool
05:58 AM XXCoder: bit ironic she owns a house before me
05:58 AM XXCoder: same time, houses there is way cheaper than in this area
06:02 AM jthornton: it's interesting that cost of living in an area is based on average earnings so they get all your money lol
06:02 AM XXCoder: not surpising, as person with more money and want house more would offer more money
06:03 AM XXCoder: thus rising the average
06:17 AM toxx: git.linuxcnc.org is down?
06:19 AM XXCoder: url changed apparenrly
06:20 AM XXCoder: there was earlier discussion on that. unfortunately it scrolled off so dunno what url was
06:20 AM jthornton: we don't use that anymore
06:20 AM jthornton: http://linuxcnc.org/
06:20 AM jthornton: click on sources
06:20 AM toxx: i see, thanks
06:20 AM jthornton: dunno why they didn't put a redirect to there
06:23 AM XXCoder: maybe git:// protocol dont allow redirect
06:32 AM jthornton: dunno, I think git.linuxcnc.org was hosted on a site that is not used anymore
06:36 AM XXCoder: maybe
06:36 AM XXCoder: more likely in fact
06:52 AM IchGucksLive: hi from hermany
06:52 AM IchGucksLive: g
06:53 AM IchGucksLive: to many 0,8 drills
07:23 AM IchGucksLive: hi makerman
07:25 AM IchGucksLive: till later
07:32 AM MacGalempsy: good morning
08:01 AM Tom_itx: morning
08:22 AM JT-Shop: morning
08:24 AM Tom_itx: 57°F, days are getting cooler
08:28 AM MacGalempsy: what a great day. the weather here has been in the 70s all week
08:45 AM MacGalempsy: hopefully they will trip pipe today, then I can go mess around
08:53 AM gloops: so vfd and spindle arrives...this looks like another setup challenge
09:27 AM HighInBC: gloops: which ones did you get?
09:32 AM gloops: HY series vfd is the only clue on the vfd - 1.5kw
09:33 AM gloops: as i understand it, i can run this manually - not connected to the computer? just power input and connect to the motor
09:56 AM JT-Shop: if you have a spare output you could connect up the run contacts and let linuxcnc start and stop it easy enough
10:02 AM hazzy1 is now known as hazzy
10:26 AM archivist: gloops and start stop contacts/switches and a pot for speed probably
10:40 AM IchGucksLive: hi
10:41 AM IchGucksLive: hazzy: what is the new gui doing
10:42 AM IchGucksLive: gloops: the 2,2 is price almost the same
10:42 AM hazzy: hey IchGucksLive!
10:42 AM hazzy: The new IU is doing very well
10:43 AM hazzy: Getting close to being usable
10:43 AM IchGucksLive: will you present it to the Devels
10:43 AM hazzy: I certainly will, when it is good enough to present :D
10:44 AM IchGucksLive: :P on your effort
10:46 AM hazzy: This is were it was as of yesterday: https://i.imgur.com/cMC8WZk.png
10:47 AM IchGucksLive: we will see how it comes out
10:48 AM hazzy: Here is a vid: https://youtu.be/Y3Uo8LmVtgI
10:50 AM IchGucksLive: nice it will get to the useble state
11:01 AM IchGucksLive: hi ruoxi
11:03 AM IchGucksLive: did roy evacuate as they where earged to
11:03 AM IchGucksLive: or is he defending his router
11:04 AM IchGucksLive: im off till later
11:06 AM * roycroft thinks ichguckslive is coastally challenged today
11:07 AM gloops: ok, to just get the spindle working, 240v supply in - straightforward, UVW out - to the motor, does it matter which 3 pins these go to ?
11:07 AM gloops: there is tiny number on the motor jack 123
11:08 AM roycroft: this is a three phase motor?
11:08 AM gloops: yeah 3 phase motor
11:08 AM gloops: going through inverter
11:08 AM roycroft: connect them to the motor randomly
11:08 AM roycroft: if the motor turns in the opposite direction from what you expect, swap any two of them
11:08 AM gloops: ok thanks, have been looking for some clue as to what goes where - no clear markings
11:09 AM gloops: right thats sounds easy enough
11:10 AM gloops: i will get it rigged up to linuxcnc - i just want to know how loud it is mainly heh
11:11 AM phipli: https://www.banggood.com/ESP32-Development-Board-WiFiBluetooth-Ultra-Low-Power-Consumption-Dual-Cores-ESP-32-ESP-32S-Board-p-1109512.html
11:12 AM phipli: Mmmmmmm cheap
11:12 AM archivist: mount/hold the motor, they jump off tables
11:12 AM phipli: ESP32 (ESP8266's big brother) for $4
11:13 AM phipli: archivist: I almost don't want to read back, because your comment out of context conjures images
11:13 AM phipli: something like the bomb scene from Dr. Strangelove?
11:13 AM roycroft: aqi is down to 31 this morning, and i can see the sun for the first time in almost 2 weeks
11:13 AM archivist: berm!
11:13 AM * hazzy is off to search for a generator to try and keep the sumps running in the coming storm
11:14 AM archivist: just restored my generator :)
11:14 AM phipli: congratulations
11:14 AM phipli: what is the next step?
11:15 AM archivist: sell it one day probably
11:15 AM gloops: one more thing - is audio speaker wire ok for cnc - spotted some shielded cable on a market stall but my mrs was in a rush
11:15 AM phipli: how many kW was it again? (will accept imperial units)
11:15 AM archivist: 50
11:15 AM phipli: how clean is the power?
11:16 AM archivist: pretty clean it is a real alternator
11:16 AM this_self: I have a small question. Can I use linuxcnc distro with that software with virtualbox? I have mesa controller 7i92 connected to PC with ethernet. I know that I have installed realtime kernel for it. Is it possible to use linuxcnc on virtualbox or vmware workstation player? Thanks
11:17 AM archivist: I would never run cnc in a vm
11:17 AM phipli: this_self: the timings aren't accurate enough in a vm
11:17 AM phipli: linuxcnc uses a realtime kernel to do accurate timings
11:17 AM this_self: right, understand.
11:17 AM roycroft: yes, "realtime kernel" and "virtual machine" are somewhat contradictory
11:18 AM this_self: I need it only for tests
11:18 AM phipli: but if you run it in a vm, you're running a realtime kernel on top of a non-realtime kernel + contention for resources
11:18 AM this_self: I have new engines, new controllers, new drivers...
11:18 AM phipli: this_self: to try the software it is probably fine
11:18 AM roycroft: why not run it off a thumb drive?
11:18 AM archivist: new pc :)
11:18 AM this_self: I want to use linuxcnc only for getting correct configuration and then I will install linuxcnc on machine
11:18 AM phipli: but like roycroft says - just boot from a USB drive :)
11:19 AM this_self: Using VM give me ability to make backup quickly
11:19 AM archivist: I just plug in a new hard drive when I start modifying
11:20 AM this_self: There I haven't internet connection. I want to make distro with latest updates at home on VM and then there I will have fully ready linuxcnc for experiments.
11:20 AM roycroft: i'm not following
11:20 AM roycroft: what do you need to back up so quickly?
11:21 AM this_self: ah right. It will be only small LUA config files...
11:21 AM this_self: as I remember the configuration for linuxcnc wrote on lua, right?
11:21 AM this_self: I have worked on it 2 years ago...
11:22 AM roycroft: so if it's just configuration files, you can use a version control system to track changes, if you need to
11:22 AM roycroft: or cp -p file file.[0-9]
11:22 AM roycroft: or something like that
11:23 AM roycroft: for tweaking config files, using vm snapshots is overkill by an order of magnitude
11:23 AM this_self: yea, you're right.
11:24 AM this_self: I forgot that it is only config files should be replaced to obtain any another configuration
11:26 AM this_self: I want re-install all which I have to newer version.
11:27 AM this_self: Now I'm looking in documentation and see here warning: "Do not upgrade the operating system if prompted to do so. ". What does it means? As I understood it means that I shouldn't upgrade system with "sudo apt dist-upgrade", but I can do that with "sudo apt upgrade", right?
11:36 AM ruoxi: yeah "sudo apt upgrade" is typically safe.
11:37 AM ruoxi: "sudo apt dist-upgrade" will likely change your kernel. LinuxCNC compiled with RTAI is highly dependent on kernel version and flavor.
11:49 AM roycroft: as long as you have pointers to the stable train in /etc/apt/sources.list you should be fine doing updates/upgrades
11:50 AM roycroft: even with apt-get dist-upgrade you won't install a new os unless you've downloaded it, and that would require changing sources.list
11:53 AM cradek: I agree with roycroft
11:53 AM roycroft: that's because i'm correct :)
11:53 AM cradek: dist-upgrade just allows removal/replacement of packages when new dependencies require it. in rare cases that might even be needed for linuxcnc.
11:53 AM cradek: it's a bit misnamed
11:54 AM roycroft: sources.list controls what you will be installing, not the command line itself
11:55 AM roycroft: when i do an os upgrade i do the following:
11:55 AM roycroft: edit sources.list to point to the new os train
11:55 AM roycroft: apt-get update (updates the database of packages that will be installed)
11:55 AM cradek: yeah that's the thing not to do with linuxcnc
11:55 AM roycroft: apt-get upgrade (does the actual installation)
11:56 AM roycroft: apt-get dist-upgrade (sometimes cleans up a few things, usually does nothing at all)
11:56 AM cradek: sometimes in our history there's been a button that does it for you, and that has been breaky
11:56 AM roycroft: yes, i'm discussing on debian systems generally, not on linuxcnc machines
11:56 AM roycroft: i don't do os upgrades on linuxcnc machines
11:56 AM roycroft: if i want to install linuxcnc on a newer os, i install the newer os from scratch, then install inuxcnc
11:57 AM roycroft: linuxcnc
11:58 AM roycroft: i don't see any reason to keep a linuxcnc machine up-to-date regarding packages, as the machine is dedicated to running linuxcnc, and is not connected to the internet (scary idea, imo)
11:58 AM cradek: updating linuxcnc is often important, and that's best done with an internet connection
11:58 AM roycroft: that said, doing updates is probably pretty safe, as long as you're following the stable train
11:58 AM roycroft: sure
11:58 AM cradek: yeah
11:59 AM roycroft: but updating linuxcnc is not necessarily updating the whole os
11:59 AM cradek: heh
11:59 AM roycroft: and it's fine to connect to the internet to install updates
11:59 AM cradek: I'm just looking at the 2.6.13 install I'm currently using to do actual work
11:59 AM roycroft: i just don't think it's a good idea to keep it on the internet all the time
12:00 PM roycroft: my home network is behind a firewall, and even there, the linuxcnc machine ips are acl'ed on the firewall
12:00 PM roycroft: so i can reach it internally but the outside world cannot under any circumstances
12:00 PM roycroft: at work i have some machines in public address space that i do not want exposed to the outside world
12:01 PM roycroft: i not only acl them on my edge routers, i set the gateway address to be the network address instead of the real gateway
12:01 PM roycroft: that works really well at containing them
12:02 PM roycroft: so if my machine has an ip address of 1.1.1.1, and it's on 1.1.1.0/24, my gateway would be 1.1.1.254 (i was doing ip networking before windows existed, and never adopted the windows model of using the low address as the gateway)
12:03 PM roycroft: on the machines i want to isolate from the outside, i set the gateway to be 1.1.1.0
12:03 PM roycroft: they can talk to the other hosts on the local network
12:03 PM roycroft: but even if the outside world managed to push traffic to them, they would not be able to send anything back
12:04 PM roycroft: it's the "security through misconfiguration" model :)
12:13 PM gloops: do i need to set any programming with this vfd to run it from the panel - or should i just hit run
12:14 PM archivist: never read that manual, some default to allow fron panel operation
12:14 PM gloops: panel light is lit and fwd
12:15 PM gloops: i mean, im not going to damage anything if it isnt set up do you think?
12:15 PM archivist: you can verify what mode it is on for a giggle
12:16 PM gloops: how do you mean?
12:16 PM gloops: got 400.00 flashing
12:17 PM gloops: theres 31 pin numbers to go through ... haha
12:18 PM archivist: or press the smoke/go button
12:19 PM gloops: hey this is quiet!
12:19 PM gloops: really quiet
12:20 PM gloops: but i dont think that was 24k
12:20 PM archivist: better learn how the display scales
12:21 PM archivist: and what it displays frequency or rpm
12:23 PM gloops: thats frequency i think, i dunno i think that was the max, very happy with that
12:25 PM roycroft: the vfd generally displays line frequency
12:27 PM roycroft: and 400Hz is often the max
12:27 PM gloops: 400 hz
12:27 PM roycroft: on my list of things to do soon is build a new router table for my woodshop
12:27 PM roycroft: i'm going to use a water cooled spindle as the router, controlled by a vfd that will sit inside the router table
12:27 PM roycroft: i need a remote display for it, and i'm trying to figure out how to translate frequency to rpm
12:27 PM roycroft: i don't want to have to that kind of translation in real time in my head
12:27 PM roycroft: i want to focus on not getting my fingers chewed up by the router tooling
12:27 PM gloops: this does display rpm i think, if set for it
12:27 PM roycroft: the vfds i have don't do that
12:28 PM roycroft: mayhap i should look for one that does
12:28 PM gloops: no, it displays motor synchronisation speed
12:28 PM gloops: or frequency
12:28 PM roycroft: almost all vfds have the capability of adding a remote display
12:30 PM roycroft: it's getting really windy in key west
12:35 PM gloops: not been watching the news, is the worst still to come roycroft?
12:38 PM roycroft: yes, the hurricane is just leaving cuba now
12:39 PM roycroft: it's been downgraded to category 3, but is expected to regain strenght and hit mainland florida as a category 5 early tomrrow morning
12:39 PM roycroft: it will spend all day tomorrow traveling up the west coast of florida
12:44 PM gloops: well, heres hoping it passes without too much upset, not a good situation to be in
12:47 PM IchGucksLive: hi
12:48 PM IchGucksLive: roycroft: noaa has pink inside since 10min so get ducking
12:49 PM sync: wrong coast
12:53 PM IchGucksLive: sync: with so many peole on the beatch
12:54 PM IchGucksLive: https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2017/national/irma-livestream/?utm_term=.ca565d0af9a0
12:55 PM IchGucksLive: still 24hr to go
01:02 PM roycroft: i'm doing fine
01:02 PM roycroft: it's beachbumpete who is in harm's way
01:03 PM roycroft: i'm the one who can't breathe because of the smoke from the forest fires, not the one who is going to blow away or drown
01:03 PM IchGucksLive: and im old an go to sleep Gn8
01:13 PM BeachBumPete: I think this Irma Bitch was scared of my awesomeness and ran off to cuba ;)
01:24 PM BeachBumPete: tough room
02:18 PM _methods: irma gerd
02:22 PM CaptHindsight: _methods: know a good maker of jig saws? cast body, electronic control
02:22 PM _methods: not really
02:22 PM CaptHindsight: electric version with cord
02:22 PM _methods: i haven't looked at buying hand tools in forever
02:22 PM _methods: pretty much have everything i need
02:22 PM CaptHindsight: picked up a Bosch but it's 90% plastic
02:22 PM _methods: yeah good luck finding one that isn't
02:23 PM _methods: you're looking for a metal jigsaw?
02:23 PM _methods: you'll have to probably hit garage sales or ebay
02:23 PM CaptHindsight: my pneumatic are all cast
02:24 PM CaptHindsight: the extended warranties are only good for one return
02:25 PM CaptHindsight: I haven't seen an industrial jig saw
02:25 PM CaptHindsight: must be out there
02:25 PM gloops: AEG made decent ones, dont know if they ever made it to the states
02:26 PM CaptHindsight: http://www.conrad.com/ce/en/product/816570/Pendulum-action-jigsaw--------600-W------------AEG-Powertools

02:28 PM gloops: ive not bought a decent one for ages, just got a little bosch
02:28 PM gloops: i bought a dewalt for good money didnt last 6 months
02:28 PM CaptHindsight: I seem to have lost a few things during my move
02:29 PM CaptHindsight: my good one will probably turn up a month after I buy a new one in a box with paperwork or similar
02:29 PM gloops: usual case
02:29 PM CaptHindsight: gloops: yeah, went to the store yesterday saw most them side by side
02:30 PM CaptHindsight: all look about the same except for the Milwaukee that was not in stock
02:31 PM CaptHindsight: the tooless holder looks like it will break first
02:31 PM CaptHindsight: and what the reviews mention
02:31 PM gloops: i wouldnt buy any dewalt tools, i got a top of range jigsaw and a planer, admittedly they were good when new, but both had issues pretty quick, jigsaw guide mechanism came loose and couldnt be repaired, planer burnt bearings out
02:31 PM CaptHindsight: 50 cents more material and it would be good
02:32 PM gloops: yeah thats the thing, one of those spoiling the ship for a pennworth of tar things
02:32 PM sync: but then it would cost $2 more
02:33 PM CaptHindsight: Lowes had 6 brands all side by side, all the prices were within a few $ of each other based on power and features
02:33 PM CaptHindsight: they all looked like the same design as well
02:34 PM CaptHindsight: maybe 2 different Chinese makers selling to 6 brands
02:34 PM gloops: yeah it will be
02:35 PM CaptHindsight: the tooless holder doesn't really appeal to me either
02:35 PM gloops: it was the same with japanese stuff, salesman selling one camera as the elite, same lenses and shutter as all the rest, it was only 2 corps manufacturing
02:35 PM CaptHindsight: I don't mond spending 60 seconds with a key if it really holds the blade
02:36 PM SpeedEvil: QC matters alas.
02:36 PM SpeedEvil: An you can never tell what level of QC is specified :(
02:36 PM sync: CaptHindsight: fein makes nice jigsaws
02:36 PM sync: I've also been happy with my makita one
02:37 PM sync: with the quickchange mechanism
02:37 PM gloops: makita is good stuff usually, hitachi are also decent
02:37 PM CaptHindsight: http://www.industrial-tool-supply.com/fein-tools/FEIN-Jigsaw.html
02:38 PM CaptHindsight: I picked up a Bosch for $80 and could not see the difference between it and the .5amp more power model for $130
02:39 PM CaptHindsight: came with 30 day no questions asked return policy
02:39 PM CaptHindsight: so I'll see if it lasts the week
02:40 PM CaptHindsight: heh unavailable https://www.amazon.co.uk/ASte-649-1-Jigsaw-Steel-240volt/dp/B00365U8UI
02:41 PM sync: they do not orbit tho
02:41 PM sync: but for metals you don't need that
02:42 PM CaptHindsight: yeah, I rarely touch wood
02:42 PM CaptHindsight: Milwaukee has a service center near me
02:42 PM CaptHindsight: often they will repair and abused tool for little to no charge
02:47 PM CaptHindsight: Milwaukee should be around for a while. I tried a few Rockwell tools but now batteries are hard to find
02:47 PM CaptHindsight: that fein that handles 1" steel looks nice
02:49 PM sync: yes, it is noice
02:50 PM CaptHindsight: not at the manufacturers site, is it EOLed?
02:52 PM CaptHindsight: you read the reviews and most everyday users say Milwaukee has gone downhill
02:52 PM CaptHindsight: looks like you have to buy used older tools
02:53 PM CaptHindsight: or accept that it will only last months to a couple years
03:00 PM gloops: its all gone downhill lol
03:01 PM gloops: i go round a big car boot sale occassionally, any old hand tools i pick up, and power tools if they havent been hammered - so old guy a teacher or something bought a top drill to put a shelf up then it sat in a cupboard in the garage never used
03:04 PM gloops: ive never seen a chinese spanner that was fit for purpose, its sheer crap, then again ive never seen a chinese bolt that was any good
03:05 PM CaptHindsight: was just checking the CL and it looks like people are dumping their cheapie power tools
03:05 PM CaptHindsight: or their brand new cordless for $20 under list price
03:06 PM CaptHindsight: I guess that is one way of "renting" tools from Home Depot
03:06 PM roycroft: sometimes you can weld a chinese spanner to a chinese bolt to extract the bolt
03:06 PM CaptHindsight: cost effective as well
03:06 PM roycroft: but the weld will be much stronger than the spanner or the bolt, so that may not really help much
03:06 PM CaptHindsight: how much is your time worth getting a bolt out?
03:07 PM CaptHindsight: the steel is often as soft as aluminum
03:07 PM roycroft: grade 3 pot metal!
03:07 PM CaptHindsight: would be interesting to see its composition
03:08 PM CaptHindsight: auto suspension and steering parts are made from similar "steel"
03:08 PM CaptHindsight: I had a stripped hole that I drilled by hand
03:09 PM CaptHindsight: ~9mm
03:09 PM CaptHindsight: easy to tap
03:10 PM CaptHindsight: not sure what engineers will be doing 20-30 years from now
03:10 PM CaptHindsight: not growing up with good anything
03:13 PM XXCoder: same time, it encourages repairing crap stuff so it works, so more skill on fixing?
03:14 PM CaptHindsight: but the gotcha is "no replacement parts"
03:15 PM Tom_itx: doesn't slow Jay Leno down
03:26 PM CaptHindsight: will need a jay Leno budget
03:26 PM gloops: haha, i bought a 'Trend' collet sleeve the other day - needed trimming in length, very light grip in the lathe, the metal just peeled away like chocolate, when i took it out it stayed in the position it had been held in - half closed, not even spring steel or hard steel just monkey metal you wouldnt make a wrought iron gate with
03:26 PM gloops: £9
03:27 PM gloops: whoever made it wants shooting with it
03:27 PM Tom_itx: if you could find a wrought iron gate anymore...
03:29 PM CaptHindsight: gates should be made of wood so they wear out quickly
03:29 PM XXCoder: talking about wood
03:29 PM XXCoder: I recently saw one of those fairly rare woody ford cr. wow
03:29 PM XXCoder: car
03:29 PM XXCoder: 1953 woody
03:30 PM XXCoder: aka the real woody
03:30 PM CaptHindsight: I always think of the one in National Lampoons Vacation
03:30 PM gloops: a bit before my time but yeah the old ford woody
03:31 PM gloops: the old trucks here used to have wooden brakes
03:31 PM XXCoder: even knockoff woodys are getting rare now
03:31 PM XXCoder: lol that movie
03:32 PM CaptHindsight: didn't they make them again recently <20 years
03:33 PM CaptHindsight: http://www.iamnotastalker.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/ScreenShot126.jpg
03:34 PM CaptHindsight: I should make one for fun
03:34 PM CaptHindsight: so ugly
03:34 PM XXCoder: lol
03:34 PM XXCoder: them fauxwood panelings
03:35 PM CaptHindsight: they must have been cracking up when they made it
03:35 PM XXCoder: yeah
03:35 PM CaptHindsight: the double headlights
03:35 PM CaptHindsight: still cracks me up
03:38 PM CaptHindsight: his trade in was a Vista Cruiser http://www.iamnotastalker.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/ScreenShot132_thumb.jpg
03:38 PM CaptHindsight: never noticed
03:39 PM XXCoder: barely used, was in shed last 10 years!
03:39 PM CaptHindsight: a friend converted on with all the 442 parts so well that the Olds engineers thought it was a concept car they made
03:39 PM CaptHindsight: on/one
03:56 PM SpeedEvil: :)
03:57 PM CaptHindsight: ebay has a bunch of old tools I want
04:00 PM SpeedEvil: https://youtu.be/mDsqpeiTqg8?t=37 How well does lcnc cope with 1200 axes?
04:00 PM SpeedEvil: :)
04:01 PM XXCoder: lol
04:03 PM XXCoder: 1200 linear servos
04:03 PM CaptHindsight: the ultimate braille display
04:04 PM CaptHindsight: nice use of stop motion
04:05 PM XXCoder: talking about blind people, theres group thats remaking painted art into 3d models that can be 3d printed
04:05 PM XXCoder: so blind can touch and feel art
04:05 PM XXCoder: CaptHindsight: its not stop motion
04:05 PM SpeedEvil: I suspect CGI
04:06 PM SpeedEvil: CaptHindsight: the pitch you could easily achieve wouldn't be enough for braille
04:06 PM SpeedEvil: braille is not variable font sized, for good reason
04:07 PM CaptHindsight: didn't mean braille
04:07 PM CaptHindsight: just a display for the blind
04:07 PM SpeedEvil: ah
04:08 PM HighInBC: like a display that says "haha you can't see me!"
04:08 PM HighInBC: ?
04:08 PM XXCoder: no..
04:13 PM phipli: archivist: http://elephantandchicken.co.uk/Lathe/Shaper%20Gear%20Cutting.pdf

04:18 PM CaptHindsight: Multi-Line Refreshable Braille Display: Working & Construction
04:20 PM CaptHindsight: vs http://www3.imperial.ac.uk/pls/portallive/docs/1/31449703.PDF
04:21 PM XXCoder: thats pretty cool
04:22 PM CaptHindsight: http://cdn-pubs.acs.org/doi/pdf/10.1021/acsami.7b08728 Photothermally Driven Refreshable Microactuators Based on Graphene Oxide Doped Paraffin
04:22 PM CaptHindsight: was looking at making these a few years ago
04:23 PM CaptHindsight: there was some group in the EU that had a working design that ran on a few LiIon batteries
04:23 PM CaptHindsight: but they lost their funding
04:25 PM CaptHindsight: http://www.tactisplay.com/
04:26 PM XXCoder: sucks
04:26 PM XXCoder: I worked with few blind/deaf people
04:26 PM XXCoder: reading is essentally all they can do in terms with info input, that and talking by touch asl
04:27 PM XXCoder: plain blind would like to read also, and braille books is very expensive
04:30 PM CaptHindsight: and there is the issue of those not wanting a medical modification
04:31 PM CaptHindsight: synthesize replacement genes for defective and splice or tissue engineer replacements
04:33 PM CaptHindsight: http://www.ox.ac.uk/news/2017-05-04-oxford-student-creates-first-synthetic-retina
04:34 PM XXCoder: thats awesome, though remember that it have to be early enough that brain properly developes parts to process input from said sense.
04:35 PM XXCoder: even if they fixed my ear-brain connection, I will never be able to hear properly
04:35 PM CaptHindsight: do you really think so?
04:35 PM XXCoder: know so, actually
04:35 PM CaptHindsight: does the brain lose too much elasticity as it ages
04:36 PM XXCoder: no, but there is specialized sectors in brain for specific sense
04:36 PM XXCoder: there is 6 centers for vision, per eye
04:36 PM CaptHindsight: they found that the nerves in the tongue may be used for vision
04:36 PM XXCoder: processing different aspect of vision
04:37 PM CaptHindsight: and preprocessing that goes on on the back of the retina
04:37 PM CaptHindsight: that part has been RE'd
04:37 PM XXCoder: hearing there is umm couple each ear? I forgot but it's major
04:38 PM CaptHindsight: neurology is in its infancy
04:38 PM XXCoder: I have double bonus of being total deaf, AND can't smell so there was plenty of sense processing room.
04:38 PM CaptHindsight: i really wonder what we could do
04:38 PM XXCoder: so my visual range is huge and annoying
04:38 PM XXCoder: and I can taste more than other people who can't smell (but still much less than people who can smell)
04:38 PM CaptHindsight: once we get passed the biblers and angry man in the sky fearers
04:40 PM XXCoder: science is fairly slow, but nice thing about it is that it is ultimately self-correcting
04:40 PM XXCoder: I very much prefer questions that can't be answered than answers that cannot be questioned
04:41 PM CaptHindsight: depends on the area
04:41 PM CaptHindsight: I found that neurology is taboo
04:41 PM XXCoder: Richard Feynman
04:41 PM Deejay: gn8
04:42 PM XXCoder: paraphase not direct quote but yeah
04:43 PM XXCoder: in your area?
04:43 PM CaptHindsight: research is at glacial speeds
04:43 PM XXCoder: yeah. brain is such a complex thing
04:43 PM XXCoder: we need supercomputers to simulate mouse brain
04:43 PM XXCoder: human brain is far more complex
04:44 PM CaptHindsight: lots of philosophy to be upset by actual science
04:45 PM XXCoder: whats annoying is concept of dual nature
04:45 PM XXCoder: no, what we are is what our brain and body are
04:45 PM CaptHindsight: not enough people working on it
04:45 PM XXCoder: affect brain and affect person'
04:46 PM CaptHindsight: not enough cross over between biologists and chemistry/physics and engineering
04:46 PM XXCoder: this applies. https://xkcd.com/435/
04:46 PM CaptHindsight: ever see biologists build a machine?
04:47 PM XXCoder: no
04:48 PM CaptHindsight: it's like getting the music and dance kids to play with the science kids
04:50 PM XXCoder: lol ok
04:52 PM CaptHindsight: some machines can't be grown
05:00 PM gloops: what happens when humans attain immortality?
05:01 PM gloops: lets say 50% dont die, or 20%, 7 billion people on the planet already
05:04 PM CaptHindsight: depends on how we decide to handle selfishness
05:06 PM CaptHindsight: the problem will correct itself anyway
05:06 PM CaptHindsight: we are just organisms on a rock in space
05:07 PM CaptHindsight: not really a problem
05:07 PM CaptHindsight: physics and chemistry just happen
05:09 PM archivist: phipli, I have written gcode to generate spur gears and bevel using straight sided cutters like that
05:24 PM CaptHindsight: XXCoder: http://www.worldometers.info/ we are already in trouble, check out the population numbers
06:33 PM Tom_itx: BeachBumPete is it gonna go into the gulf and keep goin?
06:35 PM BeachBumPete: Tom_itx who knows...certainly not the meteorologista Personally I think it is gonna hit the gulf and veer into the warmer waters there and speed up and knock the crap out of Louisiana or Texas again but hey I am not a meteoroligist and I don't play one on TV nor have I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express recently ;)
06:35 PM Tom_itx: just looked at a map and noticed it was near the tip of Florida
06:36 PM BeachBumPete: right now we have some passing showers and light breezes. Its actually quite pleasant outside right now. We will see hell it could take a hook and head back our way for all I know.
06:42 PM jdh: BeachBumPete: https://www.windy.com/?28.333,-82.101,6,m:eqmadVB
06:44 PM BeachBumPete: jdh are you in FL now?
06:45 PM jdh: nope. Wilmington, NC. looks like irma will be nothing here but jose could
06:45 PM BeachBumPete: jose's a fish storm so far no?
06:46 PM jdh: yeah, but it is still a cat 4
06:55 PM BeachBumPete: They are getting some small tornadoes touching down in Lauderdale from the feeder bands
06:57 PM BeachBumPete: We are just starting to feel some of the winds pick up
06:59 PM CaptHindsight: I'm still going with left wing conspiracy :)
07:02 PM BeachBumPete: MMmmmmmm Fish taco's tonight :)
07:04 PM BeachBumPete: I need to spend some of this down time working on the CNC lathe project I suppose
07:04 PM BeachBumPete: I mean sitting in a house that has metal shutters watching the news gets kinda boring hehe
07:06 PM BeachBumPete: hopefully we don't lose power here with some of these bands
07:06 PM jdh: go a generator?
07:06 PM jdh: got?
07:07 PM BeachBumPete: yeah just bought one yesterday
07:07 PM BeachBumPete: its 4500 watt 6.5hp
07:07 PM BeachBumPete: should work my fridge, TV and some lights and fans with any luck
07:08 PM Tom_itx: should do fine
07:08 PM Tom_itx: i wore one of those out and traded for a 5500 with some bigger surge number
07:08 PM Tom_itx: haven't had to use it much yet
07:09 PM Tom_itx: i plug it into the welder outlet in the garage after i flip the main breaker
07:09 PM BeachBumPete: never had one before will be nice to not have to borrow one. We lose power once in awhile due to heavy thunderstorms here in Florida often.
07:09 PM Tom_itx: yep, they're great
07:09 PM BeachBumPete: it even has a DC output
07:10 PM BeachBumPete: its got a 3.5 gallon tank and apparently runs for 8-10 hours a tank
07:10 PM BeachBumPete: OOh LaLa tacos are ready BB in a bit :)
07:10 PM Tom_itx: just finished subway
07:53 PM Tom_itx is now known as Tom_L
