05:10 AM jthornton: I wonder why no CC
05:11 AM XXCoder: sometimes youtube dont reconize noises as spoken
05:12 AM XXCoder: videos where guy talk while machining same time tend to have either gibberish or nothing those time
05:12 AM jthornton: Henry was on top of my head for a while
05:15 AM jthornton: stupid putube made the CC in spanish again
05:15 AM XXCoder: lol
05:15 AM XXCoder: them chickens must be spanish
05:26 AM jthornton: I changed them over to a nipple watering system yesterday and I had to fill it 3 times yesterday so I was worried they might empty it last night but they must have slept a lot as it was only down a couple of inches
05:28 AM XXCoder: interesting
05:28 AM XXCoder: dont have autopfill system?
05:29 AM jthornton: not in the brooder, it's just a piece of 2" pvc with a cap on the bottom with one chicken nipple
05:31 AM XXCoder: oh
05:35 AM jthornton: last time I only had 6 chicks so it lasted most of the day, this time I have 10 and they waste a lot of water lol
05:37 AM XXCoder: you could setup a simple physics trick bottle system
05:37 AM XXCoder: so it lasts much longer
05:38 AM jthornton: yea I was thinking about inverting a liter water bottle into the tube
05:41 AM XXCoder: nice
05:41 AM XXCoder: would love to have chickens but dont want to do upkeep lol so nah
06:00 AM jthornton: free fertilizer and they mow the grass...
06:01 AM XXCoder: too small yard and they make free dirt plots ;)

11:41 AM MacGalempsy: :)
11:41 AM archivist: he was in yesterday cannot see a mention
11:42 AM MacGalempsy: this guy that I am working with said a normal 6hr drive took over 24hrs because of all the people on the streets
11:42 AM MacGalempsy: well, interstates
11:44 AM JT-Shop: I think he said he was riding it out
11:45 AM archivist: just tie himself to the milling machine
11:49 AM MacGalempsy: lol
11:58 AM CaptHindsight: leave before everyone else or you're stuck
12:02 PM IchGucksLive: hi
12:15 PM IchGucksLive: today no cnc onlky paint job
12:16 PM IchGucksLive: tomorrow rain so full cnc day
12:16 PM MacGalempsy: wait until everyone is gone and no waiting in line for gas
12:16 PM MacGalempsy: of course there maybe no gas left
12:17 PM IchGucksLive: Loetmichel: today SRS went off
12:17 PM miss0r: I'm just putting the last work into the present for a buddy of mines birthday tomorrow. Here in Denmark, we have a strange custom; when a man reaches the age of 30 without being married, he is deemed "pebersvend". When that happens a bunch of his friends get together and weld up the strangest contraptions made from old oil barrels, which is then left outside the house of the lucky birthday boy... We have decided
12:17 PM miss0r: to be a little more refined about it. We have only used one 60l barrel, cut out a part of it, and hinged it. It contains for a small fortune of fine rom... THAT and a contraption, that starts an orange rotary light once the door is opened. He is then confronted with a note that says he has two minuts to disarm the contraption before the sirene starts howling.. and it will not stop before the battery is drained...
12:17 PM miss0r: we estimate ~20hours. the thing is pretty armoured, so he has to do some serious work :D
12:18 PM IchGucksLive: miss0r: its still time to go to löasvegas
12:18 PM IchGucksLive: malmö left
12:18 PM miss0r: sure... but I don't think he will :]
12:19 PM IchGucksLive: its not a Q of he its about she
12:19 PM miss0r: He is an electrician as well. So he will know what to do - but it _cannot_ be done in two minuts
12:19 PM IchGucksLive: ive got info about less then
12:19 PM miss0r: if he had one that was willing, i'm sure we would be building something else :)
12:20 PM miss0r: short video in a sec
12:22 PM IchGucksLive: oh they downgraded irma to 4 so the huricane party at FTlauterdale is not that good
12:22 PM IchGucksLive: only 25% discount on cat5 its 75
12:22 PM miss0r: they still say its the worst to hit california in 25 years, even thou its been downgraded
12:22 PM roycroft: rush limbaugh says that hurricanes are a scam to sell bottled water and emergency supplies
12:23 PM roycroft: but he has bugged out of his south florida home and run away
12:23 PM IchGucksLive: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/
12:23 PM roycroft: all the while maintaining that hurricanes are scams
12:23 PM roycroft: i'm trying to figure that out, but it makes my brain hurt to ponder it
12:24 PM roycroft: i just hope he's not been able to convince anyone to "ride it out"
12:24 PM roycroft: i hope everyone in harm's potential way has been able to evacuate
12:24 PM IchGucksLive: miss0r: http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/weird-news/you-really-dont-want-single-8924867
12:25 PM miss0r: This is a short video of the oil drum in action... the timer is set much lower than two minuts for the purpose of testing. https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B51cA8Udo5i7TlBHQ1JzWmZnNjQ
12:25 PM miss0r: also, its not fully assemblied at this stage
12:25 PM IchGucksLive: here in the outback in germany yoiu get to the single club
12:25 PM IchGucksLive: and the oldest is the president
12:26 PM miss0r: IchGucksLive: yeah, thats not realy something for the civilized half of Denmark :O
12:26 PM miss0r: :P*
12:26 PM miss0r: thats used alot in jutland. not the rest of the contry
12:26 PM IchGucksLive: BUT ironical most wont accept the ladys offer as it is a real cool place to be
12:27 PM miss0r: lol
12:28 PM IchGucksLive: in some places they change the rule to be marrid by the town to the partner as 4year timeliit
12:28 PM IchGucksLive: ive heard of cases that they left the lady insted of marrige
12:28 PM miss0r: roycroft: What does that clown hope to gain from such statements? I mean, everyone with even a few still intact braincells knows he is full of shit... Even me, with only 1.5 braincells left, living halfway around the world, knows so
12:29 PM miss0r: IchGucksLive: That is just nuts :]
12:29 PM IchGucksLive: what can you do on peoples mind
12:30 PM miss0r: yeah, nothing I guess
12:30 PM CaptHindsight: his listeners don't think, they just react like good obedient followers
12:31 PM IchGucksLive: Q is there no railline in FL
12:31 PM miss0r: IchGucksLive: Did you see the video of my beautifully crafted, overly complicated oil drum?
12:31 PM CaptHindsight: they have been well trained not to think for themselves
12:31 PM IchGucksLive: miss0r: its a mess
12:31 PM roycroft: ratins, miss0r, which means money
12:31 PM roycroft: ratings
12:31 PM roycroft: sadly, there are a lot of people who believe every word he says
12:32 PM miss0r: IchGucksLive: Thank you :] I've taken great care to have it look like that. with the unnessary outside capeling and such :)
12:32 PM IchGucksLive: here in Germany they woudt pull out 2k people by train per 30min
12:32 PM CaptHindsight: IchGucksLive: they have rail but it's old and slow
12:32 PM CaptHindsight: our rail infrastructure is old
12:33 PM miss0r: roycroft: I can only look in from the outside dumbstruck with amazement
12:33 PM IchGucksLive: the highway woudt be closed for Emergency only
12:33 PM CaptHindsight: not like the EU or China, Japan, Korea at all
12:33 PM IchGucksLive: CaptHindsight: France
12:34 PM CaptHindsight: commuter trains are from the 70's
12:34 PM CaptHindsight: fell more like the 50's
12:34 PM IchGucksLive: Still this old amtracks
12:34 PM CaptHindsight: fell/feel
12:34 PM CaptHindsight: they want people to drive and burn fuel
12:35 PM IchGucksLive: ive been stuck in 88 in a small town at niagra falls at 4am as train brok down
12:35 PM roycroft: even if you don't believe in human caused global climate change, or global climate change at all, if you have a functional brain you have to believe that hurricane irma is real, YUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE, and is set to cause serious damage to much of the florida peninsula
12:35 PM CaptHindsight: roycroft: facts don't matter, you can't reason with them
12:35 PM roycroft: but there are folks who think that the magnitude of the hurricane is all hype, and it's just going to be a little storm they can ride out
12:36 PM IchGucksLive: i woudt like to know thephysics of the Right U tern
12:36 PM CaptHindsight: they only listen to their leaders and peer group
12:36 PM IchGucksLive: why does it not move to wards gulf
12:36 PM CaptHindsight: they are very well dumbed down
12:36 PM IchGucksLive: there is more hot water and fuel
12:37 PM sync: roycroft: if they want to #yolo it, just let them
12:37 PM IchGucksLive: ALSO i woudt like to know from meteorolichist IF it posible that 2Major H can join
12:38 PM IchGucksLive: so many yung Familis want to stay and ride it out
12:38 PM IchGucksLive: this jetengine like storm winds may scare
12:39 PM miss0r: If you look completely cynical at the matter: If people listed to rush, and die in the process; the collective IQ of the planet will rise a bit.
12:39 PM miss0r: Perhaps he is just a modern version of natural selection
12:40 PM IchGucksLive: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zMvu5EF13xA
12:41 PM roycroft: it would be difficult for two hurricanse to merge, i should think
12:41 PM roycroft: any way the bump into each other their winds will be moving in opposite directions, and would try to cancel each other out
12:42 PM CaptHindsight: IchGucksLive: I've been close enough to tornadoes to hear those sounds
12:42 PM IchGucksLive: from tha mass as Galaxies the bigger one sucks the lower mass
12:42 PM IchGucksLive: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akQ6_OuD1mw
12:42 PM CaptHindsight: hurricanes are low pressure systems, not mass
12:44 PM IchGucksLive: stupid https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmJ8tXTcCfE
12:45 PM * roycroft has experienced 3 tornadoes, but no hurricanes
12:45 PM _methods: when hurricanes run into each other they destroy each other
12:46 PM _methods: they don't merge
12:46 PM IchGucksLive: there is the Answer for the Right TURN https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O9QYF-VeGJU a massiv HIGH presure above the storm
12:47 PM MacGalempsy: roycroft: you are listening to Rush now?
12:47 PM roycroft: that's what i said
12:47 PM roycroft: no, macgalempsy
12:47 PM roycroft: i can't
12:47 PM roycroft: his show is off the air until monday :)
12:47 PM MacGalempsy: how do you know what he is saying?
12:47 PM roycroft: he said it before he ran away
12:48 PM roycroft: he claims he cannot "legally" brodacast his show from his undisclosed current location
12:48 PM CaptHindsight: I stream him directly into my brain with special foil I brought back from Jesusland
12:48 PM MacGalempsy: you went to Israel?
12:48 PM roycroft: i can't listen to nutcases like him anyway
12:48 PM MacGalempsy: They are pretty high tech there
12:48 PM roycroft: neither right wing nutcases nor left wing nutcases
12:49 PM roycroft: but some of his nuttier remarks are worth reading and passing on
12:49 PM roycroft: we need to know what the lunatic fringe are being fed
12:50 PM CaptHindsight: he's like listening to the Onion, only less creative
12:50 PM _methods: lol
12:50 PM roycroft: and compared to alex jones, he's a rational, moderate person
12:51 PM roycroft: anyway
12:51 PM roycroft: all this is not an attempt to beat up on rush limbaugh followers
12:51 PM CaptHindsight: that lunatic fringe is larger than a fringe
12:52 PM roycroft: just a hope that they'll come to their senses and evacuate like the sane people in florida
12:52 PM CaptHindsight: unfortunately
12:53 PM IchGucksLive: MEXICO why are they still taking on tsunami 12hr beond the mainquake
12:53 PM roycroft: unfortunately i'm too compassionate to just wish for natural selection to do its thing
12:53 PM CaptHindsight: roycroft: just fyi, they don't care about you
12:54 PM roycroft: that doesn't mean i shouldn't care about them
12:54 PM CaptHindsight: thats up to you
12:54 PM roycroft: i promise, i did not try to earmark the disaster relief donations i've made "for smart people only"
12:54 PM IchGucksLive: is FL a REP state
12:54 PM roycroft: it's a purpleish state
12:54 PM roycroft: turning more blue by the day
12:55 PM IchGucksLive: DT home is well prepared
12:55 PM CaptHindsight: they tend to have Red guberners
12:55 PM roycroft: now about that, ichguckslive
12:55 PM roycroft: having said i care about all of those people
12:56 PM roycroft: i admit i'll likely feel a wee bit of schadenfreude shoudl mar-a-lago be damaged
12:56 PM roycroft: since the president has boasted that it has 3 foot thick walls and has withstood every hurricane
12:56 PM roycroft: hopefully everyone at mar-a-lago will have evacuated though
12:56 PM CaptHindsight: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/graphics_at1+shtml/093751.shtml?tswind120#contents
12:57 PM IchGucksLive: roycroft: the villa on barbados has been damged
12:57 PM roycroft: i'm just worried about all the folks in florida
12:58 PM roycroft: i'm worried because irma appears to be tracking direclty towards miami-dade, and then travel north right through the middle of the peninsula
12:58 PM CaptHindsight: Jose is a few days behind Irma
12:58 PM IchGucksLive: all the way up to jacksonvill
12:58 PM roycroft: destroying much of the state on both coasts
12:59 PM roycroft: yes, but jose is projected to veer north and not cause any damage, other than the outer leewards
12:59 PM CaptHindsight: but looks like it will stay east of the US coast
12:59 PM roycroft: it shouldn't get even close to the us coast
12:59 PM IchGucksLive: GA is Giorgia
12:59 PM roycroft: yes, and savannah may be at extreme risk
01:00 PM roycroft: one big problem in florida is that there is an extreme shortage of gasoline
01:00 PM IchGucksLive: WHY GA not GO
01:00 PM IchGucksLive: SC southcarolina
01:00 PM roycroft: which is making it difficult for many people to leave
01:00 PM CaptHindsight: now yous can't leave
01:00 PM roycroft: go looks too close to co
01:01 PM roycroft: the abbreviations were designed to be easy to distinguish from one another as much as possible
01:01 PM roycroft: ga is very distinctly different from go
01:01 PM roycroft: er, from co
01:01 PM CaptHindsight: maybe we need a hurricane wall more than a keep mexicans out wall
01:01 PM roycroft: go and co can be written (handwritten) fairly similarly
01:01 PM IchGucksLive: the Whole US is way South of me im at 49N
01:02 PM roycroft: especially GO and CO
01:02 PM roycroft: nebraska was originally given the abbreviation nb
01:02 PM IchGucksLive: FL key is almost in aquatior region
01:03 PM IchGucksLive: if you follow the globe lines
01:03 PM roycroft: but when canada adopted two letter provincial abbreviations canada post asked the usps to change nebraska to ne so that new brunswick could be nb
01:03 PM _methods: just one more reason to hate canadians
01:03 PM _methods: damn canucks
01:04 PM roycroft: florida is sub-tropical
01:04 PM roycroft: far from the equator
01:04 PM HighInBC: New Brunswick 1784, Nebraska 1867
01:05 PM HighInBC: got there first
01:05 PM HighInBC: new guys always be hating on the old skool folks
01:05 PM IchGucksLive: Keywest same level then Dubai
01:06 PM roycroft: i'm not sure it's a matter of who was first, even
01:06 PM CaptHindsight: adding the word CANADA to the mail would also solve that problem :)
01:06 PM roycroft: new brunswick is two words
01:06 PM roycroft: nb is the logical abbreviation
01:06 PM roycroft: nebraska could easily be ne, nb, nk, whatever
01:06 PM roycroft: ne is the first two letters, so there may be some logic in that, and the usps may have gotten it wrong
01:07 PM CaptHindsight: International mail generally requires that you put the name of the country on the label
01:07 PM roycroft: although it probably originally chose nb because ne and me (maine) could be confused
01:07 PM _methods: canadians just hate nebraskans
01:07 PM IchGucksLive: CaptHindsight: in this days it might arrive if you put only USA
01:07 PM _methods: it's a well known fact
01:07 PM roycroft: they may
01:07 PM roycroft: but they're too polite to ever say so
01:08 PM IchGucksLive: Canada takes the full hint of US reffugies
01:08 PM IchGucksLive: as 1000 per day flee the US
01:08 PM _methods: we're gonna send them to germany
01:08 PM CaptHindsight: _methods: well afterall what kind of name is Nebraskans?
01:09 PM IchGucksLive: _methods: our workforce needs more
01:09 PM _methods: hehe no idea maybe the canadians are right to hate them
01:09 PM HighInBC: Americans, if you must flee your country consider Mexico, we are busy with the Syrian refugees you turned away ;)
01:09 PM CaptHindsight: it's like Uzbeks in Russia
01:09 PM HighInBC: quick before the wall is up
01:09 PM Loetmichel: _methods: not that big of a problem. those few will not even be noticeable among the other refugees ;)
01:09 PM _methods: hehe
01:09 PM _methods: well you guys have methods to deal with them historically
01:10 PM CaptHindsight: hehe
01:10 PM Loetmichel: therse days are over
01:10 PM roycroft: we call them "cornhuskers", capthindsight
01:10 PM _methods: give them some of that famous german gyspy love
01:10 PM IchGucksLive: _methods: non joke we got 12 Here in town from Africa and they now CHip wood as they never seen a tree in hometown
01:10 PM _methods: gypsy
01:10 PM roycroft: which is a much more fun name
01:10 PM Loetmichel: germans got a bit more civilized... not that much can be said about some other "grand nations"...
01:11 PM Loetmichel: especially their presidents ;)
01:11 PM CaptHindsight: which is the bugeye state?
01:11 PM _methods: what haven't you seen his houses
01:11 PM roycroft: we're going through a phase that the germans went through int he 1930s
01:11 PM _methods: he's the most civilized
01:11 PM _methods: he has a bunch of gold stuff
01:11 PM roycroft: we're a bit behind the times, i guess
01:11 PM _methods: and furniture wrapped in plastic
01:11 PM roycroft: and his wife wrapped in plastic
01:11 PM CaptHindsight: keeps it fresher
01:11 PM _methods: he has the best houses
01:11 PM Loetmichel: roycroft: it seems so from over here, indeed
01:12 PM _methods: besides he's from germany.........
01:12 PM _methods: technically we can blame you for him too
01:12 PM IchGucksLive: agree
01:12 PM CaptHindsight: uhmericans are afraid of people of color
01:12 PM roycroft: thank you for highlighting his german heritage and not his scottish heritage :)
01:12 PM Loetmichel: technically nobody over here cares waht your ancestors twice removed were
01:12 PM IchGucksLive: his grandfather is not far from here
01:12 PM Loetmichel: thats not being "german" ;)
01:12 PM roycroft: <-- has lots of scots blood
01:12 PM CaptHindsight: then you add things like funny hats and it really gets them worked up
01:12 PM _methods: heheh
01:13 PM IchGucksLive: beer
01:13 PM the_wench: I am not your waitress!
01:14 PM Loetmichel: its actually quite hillarious for a german to hear an american say "i am partly german" and then learn that he had an aunt 2 generations ago that may or may not have been from germany.
01:14 PM roycroft: the southernmost part of florida is 24 degrees 27 minutes north
01:14 PM IchGucksLive: money changes your mind
01:14 PM CaptHindsight: I have the paperwork to prove 7 generations :)
01:15 PM roycroft: the tropic of cancer is currently 23 degrees, 26 minutes, 13.2 seconds north
01:15 PM roycroft: so florida is close to the tropics
01:15 PM IchGucksLive: Oranges are growing well
01:15 PM roycroft: but the tropic of cancer is currently moving south
01:15 PM CaptHindsight: soon to be the national color
01:16 PM roycroft: it will be exactly 23 degrees, 26 minutes north in 2045
01:16 PM IchGucksLive: i dont think i mill make it until there
01:16 PM roycroft: i hope i do
01:17 PM roycroft: but i'll be pretty old then
01:18 PM CaptHindsight: the real fear here is that old white men will not stay in power
01:18 PM IchGucksLive: im off Gn8
01:18 PM roycroft: well they won't
01:19 PM roycroft: so that fear will be realised
01:19 PM CaptHindsight: but they don't like that
01:19 PM roycroft: but it's an irrational fear
01:19 PM CaptHindsight: yup
01:19 PM CaptHindsight: they are irrational
01:19 PM CaptHindsight: look at most things they do
01:20 PM _methods: BeachBumPete: you off today for prepping?
01:21 PM roycroft: hopefully beachbumpete is afk because he's bugged out
01:21 PM _methods: he said he's ridin it out
01:22 PM CaptHindsight: that was yesterday
01:22 PM _methods: i doubt he changed his mind
01:22 PM _methods: he's probably busy boardin up
01:23 PM CaptHindsight: maybe a live IRC broadcast from his shop
01:23 PM _methods: i think he barely lost power with matthew
01:23 PM CaptHindsight: he's 10 minutes or so inland
01:23 PM _methods: so he may be up thru most of it
01:24 PM CaptHindsight: storm surge that far north only looks like 3ft
01:24 PM _methods: yeah he is on the bad side though
01:24 PM _methods: so he's gonna have a fun ride
01:25 PM roycroft: if the storm rides right up the middle of the state there is no good side - all sides are the bad side
01:25 PM _methods: no
01:25 PM CaptHindsight: the Keys may not be there
01:25 PM CaptHindsight: flying alligators
01:25 PM _methods: haha
01:26 PM * roycroft would not ride it out
01:26 PM * roycroft would bravely run away
01:26 PM * roycroft would bring a shrubbery with him though
01:26 PM CaptHindsight: roycroft: to where? GA, AL
01:26 PM _methods: you get used to it down here
01:26 PM roycroft: tennessee
01:26 PM _methods: i'd leave for a cat5
01:26 PM _methods: but that's it
01:26 PM roycroft: you don't get used to the biggest atlantic hurricane ever
01:26 PM _methods: apparently you do
01:27 PM roycroft: that's not apparent to me at all
01:27 PM _methods: to pete it is lol
01:27 PM CaptHindsight: if everybody leaves then who will be there to tell us what happened?
01:27 PM _methods: and plenty of other people that will ride it out
01:27 PM roycroft: the fake news media
01:27 PM CaptHindsight: and why you should have left
01:27 PM roycroft: they'll be in their studios making it all up
01:27 PM _methods: i love hurricanes
01:28 PM _methods: always fun
01:28 PM roycroft: let's just hope it ends up not as bad as it looks like it's going to be
01:28 PM CaptHindsight: speaking of hurricanes I need to vacuum the shop
01:29 PM CaptHindsight: how deep do the chips on the floor need to be before you sweep?
01:29 PM roycroft: hmm, i see that this morning's projection is for it to head a bit farther west before turning north
01:29 PM HighInBC: if they get deep enough they will compress into a new floor
01:29 PM roycroft: so the center would not hit miami-dade
01:29 PM roycroft: but rather the southwestern tip of the state
01:30 PM CaptHindsight: right through the keys
01:30 PM roycroft: and it looks like it will track along the west coast, not right down the center of the state
01:32 PM CaptHindsight: _methods: just hurricanes? How about other natural disasters?
01:33 PM CaptHindsight: roycroft: have the fires settled down near you?
01:36 PM roycroft: not at all
01:36 PM roycroft: but the wind is currently westerly, and we had a bit of rain overnight
01:36 PM roycroft: aqi is in the "good" range for the first time in 10+ days
01:36 PM roycroft: but the smoke may come back soon
01:37 PM roycroft: i'm taking advantage of the improved air quality today and breathing while i can :)
01:37 PM roycroft: sadly, that rain was in the form of thunderstorms
01:38 PM roycroft: which means in all likelihood we'll have new fires in the mountains
01:38 PM roycroft: it will probably be close to thanksgiving before our fires are all out
01:39 PM CaptHindsight: fall weather here, low 60's and 40's at night, mostly clear
01:39 PM roycroft: the eagle creek fire (in the columbia gorge, along interstate 84) has been partially contained
01:39 PM roycroft: but
01:40 PM roycroft: a firefighter's jeep has been stolen and a fire headquarters in the area ransacked
01:40 PM roycroft: who the hell would do that?
01:40 PM CaptHindsight: waiting to see if we get any remnants of Irma up here
01:40 PM _methods: meth heads
01:50 PM FAalbers is now known as Fwank
01:51 PM Fwank is now known as FAalbers
01:52 PM BeachBumPete: Hey folks
02:01 PM ve7it: hey... getting windy yet?
02:02 PM BeachBumPete: no not yet... it did rain today a couple times.
02:02 PM BeachBumPete: just bought a brand new generator 4500 watts and a bunch of cans of gas to feed the beast
02:02 PM BeachBumPete: helped my older neighbor put plywood on his house and moving his grill and other yard stuff inside.
02:03 PM BeachBumPete: I gotta stuff our kayaks in the garage
02:03 PM BeachBumPete: pull in the rest of my back yard stuff
02:03 PM ve7it: good plan... better blow up your water wings by the sound of the news we are seeing here in western Canada
02:03 PM BeachBumPete: we got the water and food ready and a bugout kit if it gets really nasty
02:05 PM ve7it: I have been to Turks and Caicos... dont know how they made it thru a 20' storm surge... the islands are not very high
02:05 PM BeachBumPete: we will see... that bitch is gonna do what she's gonna do. almost nobody I know here is leaving all of my neighbors are staying the only folks who have left are out on the islands and closer to the beach
02:05 PM BeachBumPete: those small islands are kinda funny
02:05 PM BeachBumPete: they are used to this as they get it all the time
02:05 PM BeachBumPete: but they still build most buildings like shotgun shacks
02:06 PM BeachBumPete: so when a really bad one hits they get creamed
02:06 PM BeachBumPete: I have been to MOST of the islands down there at one point or another
02:07 PM ve7it: yea, house contruction for hurricane.... stone walls so water and sand can flow through, cheap roof so you can put a new one on after the blow
02:07 PM BeachBumPete: including Cuba, Hispaniola, jamaica, bahamas, etc. etc.
02:07 PM CaptHindsight: ve7it: they got hit pretty hard, have you seen the pics?
02:07 PM CaptHindsight: pretty much flat
02:07 PM BeachBumPete: they certainly got the worst of this one
02:08 PM BeachBumPete: 185mph sustained winds
02:08 PM BeachBumPete: not good for your thatched hut
02:08 PM ve7it: no, not yet.... i guess that club med will have some renovations to do
02:08 PM BeachBumPete: I remember visiting the Jack Tar village resort in the Dominican Republic. That was almost paradise I swear LOL
02:09 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzqeJ67289s
02:09 PM BeachBumPete: I remember riding rented scooters around the city and going up to the fort tons of fun
02:10 PM BeachBumPete: we will most certainly be feeling the effects of the worst hurricane to hit Florida in quite some time...
02:11 PM ve7it: stick framed houses dont seem to hold together well
02:11 PM CaptHindsight: no worries, trump has it under control
02:12 PM ve7it: oh... thats where all the hot air came from
02:14 PM _methods: https://usweekly.com/news/15/407/rush-limbaugh-indicates-hes-evacuating-palm-beach-days-after-suggesting-hurricane-irma-is-fake-news.html
02:14 PM BeachBumPete: at least I will have some time to shoot my new PCP air rifle across the house LOL
02:14 PM _methods: lol
02:15 PM BeachBumPete: I can get 19.5 yards if I shoot from my master bedroom across the kitchen and down the hall into the guest bath LOL
02:16 PM ve7it: as long as you save some ammo for the occasional seagull
02:16 PM Simonious: anyone have a clue how a Quadro P600 would be for Solidworks, should be just fine, right?
02:16 PM BeachBumPete: ammo is NOT a problem ;)
02:16 PM ve7it: ummm roast "pheasant"
02:16 PM BeachBumPete: or squirrel LOL NOT
02:17 PM _methods: Simonious: should be just fine
02:17 PM BeachBumPete: I swear I got way more squirrels around my house here than I ever did in Tennessee
02:18 PM BeachBumPete: we also have a bunch of Racoons
02:18 PM BeachBumPete: and some wild peacocks
02:18 PM BeachBumPete: along with all the other typical Florida birds and animals
02:24 PM roycroft: don't shoot your air rifle into the hurrican winds - it might blow back and put your eye out!
02:25 PM HighInBC: perhaps you will shoot the eye of the storm out
02:25 PM HighInBC: be a hero
02:26 PM roycroft: the eyewall has been collapsing and reforming almost constantly
02:26 PM roycroft: it's a more active eyewall renewal cycle than with most hurricanes
02:26 PM roycroft: but maybe pete will get lucky and shoot it at just the right time
02:26 PM roycroft: it looks like he'll have to travel west to get to the eye though
02:47 PM Simonious: _methods: leaning towards a P1000 now..
02:48 PM _methods: should be more than capable
02:48 PM Simonious: I agree
02:48 PM Simonious: take a pretty big assembly to see a performance hit with that IMO
02:48 PM _methods: yeah
02:48 PM _methods: what size assemblies will you be working with?
02:49 PM Simonious: honestly _usually_ under 100 parts and usually less than that.
02:49 PM _methods: oh yeah easy peasy
02:50 PM Simonious: I do work in sketchup and solidworks, the sketchup assemblies tend to get bigger and hurt the machine more than the solidworks ones do, because I'm doing quickly broad concept ideas there.
02:50 PM Simonious: *quickie
02:50 PM Simonious: that sounds counter intuitive, but .. that is how it shakes out
02:50 PM _methods: hey whatever works for you
02:54 PM CaptHindsight: I have a HD5800 in a 4core ~3ghz system that I never have any issues with on SW
02:55 PM CaptHindsight: things get slow on older SW when you use the rendering since it used the cpu vs the gpu
02:56 PM CaptHindsight: not sure if the current version of SW still only uses the cpu or maybe only nvidia
02:58 PM CaptHindsight: I can spin assemblies with many 10's of parts around like a helicopter
03:11 PM andypugh: Who was talking about getting one of those ÂŁ100 RM-One PCs?
03:12 PM andypugh: Mine if here, and I like it for a LinuxCNC dev machine.
03:12 PM XXCoder: andypugh: is that orange all on one board computer?
03:13 PM andypugh: No, not orange.
03:13 PM andypugh: But, all in one, and with parallel, PCI and PCIe
03:13 PM andypugh: And ethernet, so can use _any_ Mesa card
03:13 PM CaptHindsight: http://www.alphr.com/rm/rm-one-310/31869/rm-one-310-review and similar
03:14 PM CaptHindsight: andypugh: I thought you brought it up :)
03:14 PM andypugh: Yes, but someone else was sounding interested.
03:14 PM CaptHindsight: somebody else did ask about where you found them and was looking to also buy one
03:15 PM CaptHindsight: someone on the same island as you but I don't recall the nick
03:15 PM XXCoder: 100 pounds? website says 871 pound
03:16 PM CaptHindsight: http://www.alphr.com/science/1006602/chimps-can-be-taught-to-play-rock-paper-scissors-as-well-as-four-year-olds
03:19 PM andypugh: XXCoder: It’s an old PC aimed at classrooms
03:19 PM XXCoder: ahh ok
03:20 PM XXCoder: so it seemed good for linuxcnc or what?
03:20 PM andypugh: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RM-One-Ecoquiet-965-Intel-Dual-Core-T3200-2-00-GHz-All-In-One-PC-System-Grade-C-/121957176818?hash=item1c6536d5f2:g:9dUAAOSwKfVXEP3x
03:20 PM andypugh: Looks god so far
03:20 PM andypugh: (good)
03:21 PM CaptHindsight: andypugh: suavesteve was the one
03:21 PM andypugh: I kike the fact it has a handle on the top, I can move it out of the way.
03:21 PM XXCoder: nice
03:22 PM CaptHindsight: andypugh: have you tested the latency yet?
03:22 PM XXCoder: https://earth.nullschool.net/#current/wind/surface/level/orthographic=-64.49,22.59,1161
03:22 PM CaptHindsight: I've come across PC's with a;; the right hardware only to be foiled but a lousy BIOS that won't kill power management
03:23 PM XXCoder: is there a way to modify bios? I know there have been couple open source bios but not very popular because most boards is pretty unique on bios.
03:23 PM CaptHindsight: I'm talking about you HP
03:24 PM andypugh: Installing the stretch ISO now. I did have Mint on it, but ftp.kernel.org wasn’t annswering
03:24 PM CaptHindsight: XXCoder: coreboot replaces the factory BIOS
03:24 PM XXCoder: some bios have seperate setting to disable and enable power saving, but some dont but can turn off each and each specific power management, like hard drive , etc
03:25 PM CaptHindsight: XXCoder: if you are a whiz with assembly you can modify BIOS settings with a hex editor
03:25 PM XXCoder: sadly I am not lol
03:26 PM CaptHindsight: a coreboot port takes from a day to months of work
03:26 PM CaptHindsight: before EFI you could get the tools from Phoenix or AMI to modify the BIOS settings
03:27 PM CaptHindsight: the OEM's rarely touch source, they did everything through a config menu
03:28 PM CaptHindsight: grab features that match the chipset and then you'd have a big checkbox screen for what features and settings end up facing the end user
03:29 PM andypugh: This was wierd: Back in December 2013 I sent someone in the US a blank cross-slide screw. (no threads, but with the drive gear hoobed). On wednesday it arrived back in my letterbox as undeliverable. Where has it been for almost 4 years?
03:30 PM sync: stuck in some sorting machine
03:30 PM XXCoder: lol
03:30 PM XXCoder: someday they may find my hard drive I sent in early 2000s
03:31 PM CaptHindsight: Royal mail
03:31 PM MarcelineVQ: as suspiciously why did the person never say it didn't arrive
03:31 PM CaptHindsight: andypugh: I think that they have a huge warehouse that acts like a delay line
03:32 PM XXCoder: andypugh: or maybe its mail hoarder mailman. happened few times
03:32 PM XXCoder: they once caught one guy, he had years worth of mail in his house
03:33 PM XXCoder: as it turns out, he simply worked some set number of hours, and went home and dumped whatever mail left there
03:37 PM CaptHindsight: I had a package stuck in Royal Mail for weeks. It was leaking so they put it in a bag and in some corner. Hoping it would just go away
03:38 PM CaptHindsight: funny how those package problems just don't solve themselves
03:44 PM XXCoder: yeah its like there is no magical package disappear fairies
03:45 PM CaptHindsight: you'd think that they would want to keep mail moving
03:45 PM XXCoder: jose is cat4 now
03:45 PM CaptHindsight: even if in circles
03:45 PM XXCoder: not perfect system but it mostly works
03:46 PM XXCoder: I once found a package that was under roller system, its been there couple weeks
03:46 PM XXCoder: I still wonder if it made it in time for xmas party
03:57 PM yasnak: welp
03:57 PM yasnak: all the cnc's covered
03:57 PM yasnak: forklifts in front of the bay doors
03:57 PM yasnak: pretty much it, time to evac. gotta love it
03:58 PM XXCoder: flornia eh
03:58 PM yasnak: yeah
03:58 PM yasnak: looked good for awhile
03:58 PM yasnak: now its going again back to my side
03:58 PM yasnak: doing offsite server backups as fast as i can lol
03:59 PM XXCoder: yeah its nasty one allright
03:59 PM XXCoder: its theorically weaker than Andrew
03:59 PM XXCoder: but it will affect far more land than Andrew
04:04 PM BeachBumPete: yasnak aw man sorry to hear that. It was looking like it was gonna cream us here for awhile now it keeps going more westerly track
04:04 PM yasnak: yeah
04:04 PM yasnak: everyone was like...oh yeah, we will all be in tomorrow for work
04:05 PM BeachBumPete: by the time it gets here I would not be surprised at all if it was out in the damn gulf LOL
04:05 PM yasnak: then the shit shifted and apparently everyone decided not to show up
04:05 PM yasnak: had to cover all the machines with just five guys haha
04:05 PM yasnak: yeah, one guy says its possible it'll go around and hit the panhandle
04:05 PM BeachBumPete: I just spent some coin on a brand new generator.....now watch I won't even get to use it LOL
04:06 PM yasnak: dunno, closing up shop. waiting for traffic to die down and then evac'ing to my other house
04:06 PM yasnak: inverter? what brand?
04:06 PM BeachBumPete: its a LPC or something like that no name brand.
04:06 PM BeachBumPete: it seems to work nice tho
04:07 PM BeachBumPete: just put oil in it and poured some gas in there and it fired right up
04:07 PM BeachBumPete: its a 4500watt 6.5hp unit
04:07 PM BeachBumPete: even has a DC output 12v
04:07 PM BeachBumPete: Oh well if the storm tracks away all the better and I will have one for next time..
04:12 PM XXCoder: limbaugh says Irma is a liberal hoax, files out.
04:12 PM XXCoder: *flies
04:16 PM yasnak: sister works @ briggs
04:16 PM yasnak: so was j/w
04:21 PM andypugh: RM-One Latency report. Uspace stretch ISO, 5k unloaded, 17k with internts and glxgears. That’s actually the best I have ever seen, and that’s with preempt-rt!
04:24 PM Deejay: gn8
04:28 PM XXCoder: andypugh: dang thats better than even my computer
04:28 PM XXCoder: mine was 19k-20k
04:28 PM XXCoder: power savings can be turned off?
04:55 PM Crom: last ordered a Harbor fright 44991 x2 mini mill, a tts collet, 2 tts er16 collets and the belt conversion from LMS as well
04:55 PM Crom: last night
04:56 PM Crom: HF was $640 delivers and LMS was $283
04:57 PM Crom: now I need to get a vise for it
04:57 PM Crom: suggestions?
04:59 PM XXCoder: short term, drill vise?
05:14 PM XXCoder: apparently there is elder couple named harvey and irma.
05:14 PM XXCoder: been married 75 years.
05:16 PM CaptHindsight: we were able to generate the greatest latency jitters by playing Flash videos in Firefox
05:17 PM CaptHindsight: andypugh: I wish they sold those here
05:17 PM CaptHindsight: rm-one usa
05:19 PM CaptHindsight: wow, those were ~$1k new
06:47 PM XXCoder: 3 hours of goverment calls in order to resolve one tiny thing
06:47 PM XXCoder: perfect.
07:18 PM trentks: It appears that the git repository is down? I'm talking about what's referenced on the linuxcnc wiki / is in the AUR PKGBUILD git://git.linuxcnc.org/git/linuxcnc.git
07:21 PM trentks: Does anyone know if this is a permanent change, or whether the server is just down? I see linuxcnc is also hosted on github, but I can't just replace the URL in the PKGBUILD with the github url, I'm not sure what the directory structure differences are.
07:21 PM Tom_L: trentks it moved
07:21 PM Tom_L: https://github.com/linuxcnc
07:22 PM trentks: Tom_L just to github? Blast.
07:22 PM Tom_L: one sec and i'll have the link
07:22 PM trentks: I've tried replacing source=($_gitname::'git://git.linuxcnc.org/git/linuxcnc.git#tag=v2.7.8' 'boost.patch' 'image-to-gcode.patch' 'linuxcnc-sim.sh') in the AUR PKGBUILD with
07:22 PM trentks: source=($_gitname::'https://github.com/LinuxCNC/linuxcnc.git#tag=v2.7.8' 'boost.patch' 'image-to-gcode.patch' 'linuxcnc-sim.sh')
07:22 PM trentks: But she's a no-goer
07:23 PM Tom_shop: git clone git://git.linuxcnc.org/git/linuxcnc.git linuxcnc-dev
07:24 PM Tom_L: wait, that'w wrong
07:24 PM Tom_shop: git clone git://github.com/LinuxCNC/linuxcnc.git linuxcnc-dev
07:24 PM trentks: Yeah that's refering to the old, defunct, url.
07:24 PM Tom_L: there
07:25 PM trentks: Yeah, I've tried that replacement in the AUR PKGBUILD but it seemingly has a different directory structure as it then complains that ... /linuxcnc-sim/src/linuxcnc/src: Not a directory
07:26 PM Tom_L: ask the -devel channel
07:29 PM trentks: Cheers Tom_L
07:46 PM BeachBumPete: Beautiful night here in Florida ;)
07:46 PM Tom_L: pretty nice here today too
07:46 PM Tom_L: other than a small overnight earthquake
07:46 PM BeachBumPete: Grillin' some big juicy burgers here right now
08:13 PM XXCoder: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4O0c_aVqekI
08:13 PM XXCoder: genius.
08:13 PM XXCoder: expecially with all that iron they use
08:14 PM XXCoder: also yet another 2 microwaves killed.
08:38 PM CaptHindsight: anybody ever use http://www.cpofestool.com/ powertools
08:39 PM BeachBumPete: sure
08:39 PM Tom_L: nope, i use dynabrade
08:40 PM CaptHindsight: was looking at jig saws
08:41 PM Tom_L: mine's a B&D but i don't use it that much
08:42 PM BeachBumPete: Bosch is probably the best jigsaw made from my experience
08:42 PM Tom_L: err dewalt, one of those
08:42 PM CaptHindsight: picked up a 6amp by Bosch for $80
08:42 PM Tom_L: i like bosch too
08:42 PM CaptHindsight: kinda flimsy
08:43 PM Tom_L: at least what i've gotten from them
08:43 PM CaptHindsight: nobody has the Milwaukee around here
08:43 PM Tom_L: those are good
08:43 PM BeachBumPete: I have been using bosch jigsaws in cabinet work for decades now nothing flimsy about them in my experience
08:43 PM CaptHindsight: this uses the T-type tooless holder for the blades
08:44 PM CaptHindsight: i use them for sheet metal
08:44 PM BeachBumPete: why?
08:44 PM CaptHindsight: maybe .1% wood
08:44 PM CaptHindsight: square holes
08:45 PM Tom_L: mmm, something about this MB is different from the other gigabyte
08:45 PM Tom_L: not letting me run my old cmd window commands anymore
08:45 PM CaptHindsight: i also can't fit 3ft x 6ft doors into my mill
08:46 PM CaptHindsight: i make big control panels
08:46 PM Tom_L: know of any bios settings to allow legacy support?
08:46 PM CaptHindsight: legacy USB?
08:46 PM BeachBumPete: send them out for laser cutting
08:46 PM CaptHindsight: no time
08:46 PM Tom_L: i'm trying to run cmd and run some old dos programs
08:46 PM Tom_L: not letting me do it
08:47 PM Tom_L: the old gigabyte board did
08:47 PM CaptHindsight: lots of last minute changes and mods
08:47 PM Tom_L: it's not the cpu cause i just swapped that out
08:47 PM CaptHindsight: handheld laser would be handy as well
08:47 PM BeachBumPete: plasma?
08:47 PM BeachBumPete: what gauge?
08:48 PM CaptHindsight: from 22ga aluminum to 12ga steel
08:48 PM CaptHindsight: or SS
08:48 PM Tom_L: what is UEFI vs Legacy PCI support?
08:49 PM CaptHindsight: jig saw is prefect
08:49 PM BeachBumPete: I often cut sheetmetal with my bosch jigsaw specifically aluminum but sometimes mild steel
08:49 PM BeachBumPete: nothing fun or fast about it but it works
08:49 PM CaptHindsight: lots of panel meters and controls are square vs round
08:50 PM BeachBumPete: what about a nibbler?
08:50 PM CaptHindsight: slow and uneven
08:50 PM BeachBumPete: SLOW??
08:50 PM CaptHindsight: compared to jig saw
08:50 PM BeachBumPete: I used a nibbler to cut the roof out of my old honda for a sunroof install. it cut like butter and rather quickly
08:51 PM BeachBumPete: made a mess of sharp azz half moon chips tho
08:51 PM CaptHindsight: an hour ago I had to cut a 10" x10" and 52mm square holes out of a 22ga SS door
08:51 PM BeachBumPete: what about electric shears? if the holes are that big you could at least cut MOST of it with them
08:51 PM CaptHindsight: the Bosch did it but I don't think it will last long
08:52 PM BeachBumPete: the blade chosen makes a big difference too
08:52 PM CaptHindsight: $9 for a 5 pack of thin metal blades
08:53 PM CaptHindsight: cut like butter
08:54 PM CaptHindsight: my pneumatic tools are all cast, this jig saw is plastic
08:54 PM CaptHindsight: cast metal body with electronic control would be nice
08:54 PM BeachBumPete: mine is cast metal head
08:54 PM BeachBumPete: you must have bought the budget version :)
08:55 PM Crom: I prefer using a electric shear when possible.
08:55 PM BeachBumPete: that's what I said
08:55 PM BeachBumPete: or a nibbler
08:55 PM BeachBumPete: for sheetmetal
08:55 PM BeachBumPete: they sure cut fast and smooth
08:55 PM CaptHindsight: a shear isn't versatile enough
08:55 PM BeachBumPete: plus they don't distort the edge so much
08:56 PM CaptHindsight: can't get into the same places as a jig saw

08:56 PM BeachBumPete: true but if you are cutting 10 inch squares I would use both
08:56 PM CaptHindsight: heh sorry ^^
08:56 PM BeachBumPete: wow that is cheap
08:56 PM BeachBumPete: mine was like twice that much
08:56 PM CaptHindsight: is a cast body and electronic control too much to ask for?
08:57 PM Crom: For big square holes shears are nicest. I like niblers for doing curves
08:57 PM CaptHindsight: i have shears and nibblers
08:59 PM Crom: I have a manual nibler doesn't do shit for thickness... I need to get an air nibler and another shear. Asshole boss has my old one.
08:59 PM CaptHindsight: 10" square hole with shear would require a big hole saw cit first
08:59 PM CaptHindsight: I have a older Milwaukee electric shear
09:00 PM CaptHindsight: must be from the 80's and still going
09:00 PM BeachBumPete: zip it with a plasma cutter then switch to the shears ;)
09:00 PM CaptHindsight: i have a few pneumatic nibblers
09:00 PM BeachBumPete: the nibbler I used was a pneumatic
09:00 PM BeachBumPete: loud as hell but cut fast and smooth
09:00 PM CaptHindsight: can't put a door mounted on a control cabinet on a plasma table
09:01 PM BeachBumPete: no hand cut the starting hole
09:01 PM CaptHindsight: you have to cut in place
09:02 PM CaptHindsight: also have to cut powder coated cabinets so no plasma
09:02 PM CaptHindsight: waterjet that stays dry would be nice :)
09:02 PM HighInBC: I should get a nibbler
09:02 PM CaptHindsight: for production it's easy
09:03 PM CaptHindsight: you send the files out with a bill of materials and it comes back done
09:04 PM CaptHindsight: 99% complete machine that needs some added indicators, controls etc have to be drilled, cut etc in place
09:04 PM CaptHindsight: step drills come in really handy
09:05 PM CaptHindsight: and a set of knockout punches for all the typical sizes
09:05 PM Tom_L: punch press
09:05 PM CaptHindsight: hand held
09:05 PM HighInBC: I have a powder coated panel box that is 16 gauge steel, not looking forward to working on it with drill and dremel to make holes for meter and buttons etc
09:06 PM CaptHindsight: just cover it with duct tape
09:06 PM BeachBumPete: It's a damn shame you are not superman or Cyclops from X-men :)
09:07 PM CaptHindsight: on planet Krypton everyone is a machinist or sheet metal worker, welder etc
09:08 PM BeachBumPete: seems like its that way here too LOL
09:10 PM HighInBC: CaptHindsight: Kryptons are only super strong under the Earth's yellow sun
09:10 PM Tom_L: seems there's been a decline in builds here lately or is it just me..
09:11 PM Tom_L: haven't heard much from zeeshan lately, how's his lathe coming along?
09:11 PM BeachBumPete: mine's not technically in a decline ;)
09:12 PM Tom_L: well, you've got an excused absense this week
09:12 PM BeachBumPete: hehehe sweet!
09:12 PM Tom_L: just don't push it beyond that :)
09:12 PM BeachBumPete: that crazy bitch Irma can't decide which way she wants to plow
09:12 PM Tom_L: typical female
09:13 PM BeachBumPete: those poor cubans are probably not enjoying her too much about now.....
09:14 PM Tom_L: just finished installing the new mb and a M.2 ssd
09:15 PM BeachBumPete: nice
09:15 PM Tom_L: must say it's a slight improvement
09:15 PM BeachBumPete: got some thunderboomers around here right now
09:17 PM Tom_L: sequential read: 2141MB/s write: 1678MB/s random read: 409,868 IOPS write: 370,018 IOPS
09:17 PM Tom_L: whatever an IOPS is
09:17 PM BeachBumPete: its like an oops but you did it
09:18 PM Tom_L: i do lots of those
09:18 PM BeachBumPete: hehe you too?
09:18 PM CaptHindsight: haven't used the electric shear since I moved now i can't find it
09:18 PM CaptHindsight: moving sucks
09:19 PM Tom_L: standard ssd: 545MB/s write: 517MB/s random read: 72,211 IOPS write: 70,569 IOPS
09:20 PM Tom_L: so roughly 3-4x faster
09:20 PM CaptHindsight: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IOPS
09:21 PM BeachBumPete: feels like I did nothing today short of get stuff to prepare for the storm....then just sat in front of the TV and PC all day
09:21 PM Tom_L: funny, i don't watch much tv in a storm. i'd rather stand on the porch and make my own observations
09:21 PM CaptHindsight: beats getting prepared as the winds pick up
09:22 PM CaptHindsight: whoosh, was that a cow?
09:22 PM BeachBumPete: well personal observations here today would have shown a gorgeous if slightly breezy day until now
09:22 PM Tom_L: tornados are different than hurricanes though
09:23 PM BeachBumPete: no clues there is a massive record breaking hurricane just a few hundred miles away
09:23 PM Tom_L: so i hear
09:23 PM CaptHindsight: https://m.popkey.co/376c84/qrLm4.gif
09:23 PM BeachBumPete: tornadoes scare me WAAAYYYY more than hurricanes honestly
09:23 PM Tom_L: feel free not to share
09:23 PM Tom_L: differences in where we grew up...
09:24 PM BeachBumPete: tornadoes are freaking vicious
09:24 PM Tom_L: they're over and done in a few min though
09:24 PM BeachBumPete: unpredictable, disastrous, and basically terrifying
09:25 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjb7QtMEBUg tornado close up
09:25 PM CaptHindsight: they were nuts
09:25 PM Tom_L: now, i wouldn't wanna be in JT-Shop's territory during one
09:25 PM BeachBumPete: yeah they are over and done with quick but that is typically all it takes
09:25 PM Tom_L: it's flat around here and you can usually see what's going on
09:25 PM BeachBumPete: I cannot imagine having one hit during the night time which has happened before
09:25 PM CaptHindsight: look how close they get ~3:00
09:26 PM Tom_L: notice the clear sky surrounding too
09:27 PM BeachBumPete: astonishingly stupid
09:27 PM BeachBumPete: yeah lets hurry up and try to get close to one of the most dangerous forces in nature
09:30 PM Tom_L: that's a fairly substantial tree it just pulled right out of the ground
09:32 PM BeachBumPete: oh and the truck trailer....did you see the truck trailer?
09:32 PM BeachBumPete: where's the rest of the truck?
09:32 PM Tom_L: the red container?
09:32 PM BeachBumPete: that is a MONSTER I swear
09:32 PM Tom_L: the trunk is half the width of the container..
09:33 PM Tom_L: the one that went thru here several years ago was 1.7 mi wide
09:37 PM BeachBumPete: WOAH
09:43 PM Tom_L: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tornado_outbreak_of_May_4%E2%80%936,_2007
09:43 PM Tom_L: The total path length was 22 miles (35 km), and the width of the funnel reached 1.7 miles (2.7 km)
09:44 PM Tom_L: one that developed N of there grew to 2mi
10:02 PM * roycroft is flabbergasted
10:02 PM roycroft: there was just a report on our fires on the national news
10:03 PM roycroft: specifically the oregon fires
10:03 PM roycroft: not the ones in la
10:03 PM roycroft: which seems to be the only part of the west that exists in the minds of the east coast media moguls
10:04 PM XXCoder: roycroft: ashes is finally clearing up here
10:04 PM XXCoder: not much clearing but its a start
10:04 PM roycroft: our air quality dipped down into the "good" range for a while today
10:05 PM roycroft: but it's back up to "moderate" now, and will likely go back up to "hazardous" over the weekend
10:05 PM roycroft: but at least i can breathe for a day or two
10:05 PM XXCoder: ohhh
10:05 PM XXCoder: tomorrow rain for first time in months
10:06 PM XXCoder: 53, moderate here now
10:06 PM roycroft: we had a wee bit of rain last night
10:06 PM roycroft: yeah, we're at 53 right now
10:06 PM roycroft: we were down to 38 for a bit earlier today
10:06 PM XXCoder: nice.
10:07 PM roycroft: 156 last night
10:07 PM XXCoder: here this year record was 148
10:07 PM roycroft: we hit 440 on labor day
10:07 PM XXCoder: this week 128 something?
10:07 PM XXCoder: dang thats insane
10:07 PM roycroft: yes
10:07 PM roycroft: 500 means "do not go outside or engage in any physical activity for any reason"
10:08 PM XXCoder: ouch
10:08 PM XXCoder: if I had to work on that condition, I
10:08 PM XXCoder: d wear my work mask all day at work
10:10 PM roycroft: it's all sub-2.5µ particulates
10:10 PM roycroft: most dust masks are useless
10:10 PM XXCoder: hmm ok
10:10 PM roycroft: prior to last month our all time high aqi was around 275
10:11 PM roycroft: but i have to qualify that by saying that back when we allowed field burning there was no air quality monitoring
10:11 PM XXCoder: I was thinking certain mask that can handle fine dust
10:11 PM roycroft: and i'm sure that at the peak of the field burning days it was probably at least as high as we experienced on labor day
10:11 PM roycroft: hepa masks can
10:12 PM roycroft: and are ineffective if you have any facial hair
10:12 PM XXCoder: heh too bad. I usually am clean shaven
10:12 PM roycroft: i'm thinking of getting this:
10:12 PM roycroft: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002KA0CMO/_encoding=UTF8?coliid=I70GTIM24HGEP&colid=3S87W6NULH3VW
10:12 PM roycroft: i have a full bear (but neatly trimmed)
10:12 PM roycroft: beard
10:13 PM roycroft: i have no bears :)
10:13 PM roycroft: and while i know i have the right to bear arms, i have no bear arms
10:13 PM XXCoder: that joke is a bear on me
10:14 PM roycroft: i appreciate your bearing with my telling it
10:14 PM XXCoder: lol
10:14 PM roycroft: oh cool
10:15 PM roycroft: a story about dale chahuly now
10:15 PM roycroft: it's pnw day on the news!
10:15 PM * roycroft has some chahuly glass from dale's early days
10:15 PM XXCoder: glassmaker apparently. cool
10:16 PM roycroft: amazing glassblower
10:16 PM roycroft: he works in seattle
10:17 PM XXCoder: I wonder if glass mestium near here has some of his works.
10:18 PM roycroft: there are some chihuly videos on youtube
10:18 PM roycroft: it's fascinating to watch him and his team work
10:18 PM XXCoder: ok
10:18 PM XXCoder: as soon as done with isaac arthur videop
10:18 PM roycroft: he's 75 now
10:18 PM roycroft: winding down
10:19 PM XXCoder: you know about him? very interesting topics discussed
10:19 PM XXCoder: on this video, colonizing and terrforming venus
10:20 PM roycroft: i'm not familiar with him
10:20 PM XXCoder: suggest turn on captions https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BI-old7YI4I
10:21 PM * roycroft will check it out later
10:22 PM roycroft: the chihuly story was pretty good
10:22 PM roycroft: it talked about the flack he gets
10:22 PM roycroft: people dis dale a lot
10:23 PM roycroft: and recently the nyt ran an article titled "who makes chihuly glass?"
10:23 PM XXCoder: yeah exa,ple?
10:23 PM roycroft: which is ridiculous
10:23 PM roycroft: people complain that dale himself does not make everything
10:23 PM roycroft: but he's a blassblower
10:23 PM roycroft: glassblower
10:23 PM roycroft: you can't do glass blowing solo
10:23 PM roycroft: it requires a team
10:24 PM roycroft: he's like a movie director
10:24 PM roycroft: he assmebles the team and then guides them to make the stuff according to his vision
10:24 PM roycroft: i don't know why folks dump on him for that - it's the only way one can do large scale glass blowing
10:24 PM XXCoder: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OndIFim3w0I autocraptoned
10:26 PM roycroft: people did not complain when henri matisse became wheelchair bound and started his cutout art, hiring people to paint all the sheets that he used to make the cutouts
10:26 PM roycroft: that was a team thing
10:26 PM XXCoder: yeah
10:27 PM roycroft: nobody complains about the venetian glass artists who work with teams
10:27 PM roycroft: like lino tagliapietra
10:28 PM roycroft: but dale chihuly gets a lot of flack about it
10:28 PM roycroft: perhaps it's because he's so successful
10:29 PM XXCoder: maybe dunno
10:29 PM roycroft: anyway, watch some videos of his team working when you can
10:29 PM roycroft: it's really fascinating
10:29 PM XXCoder: yeah saw some
10:29 PM roycroft: and he assmebles amazing teams
10:29 PM roycroft: assembles
10:32 PM roycroft: netflix just added a series called "fire chasers"
10:32 PM roycroft: good timing on that
10:32 PM roycroft: it's about forest firefighters, of course
10:32 PM XXCoder: lol ok
10:32 PM XXCoder: dont watch much tv lately
10:33 PM roycroft: netflix isn't tv
10:33 PM roycroft: it's netflix :)
10:33 PM roycroft: which means two things, depending on whether chilling is part of the experience
10:33 PM XXCoder: lol close enough :P
10:34 PM XXCoder: you watched myastery science 3000?
10:34 PM roycroft: no
10:35 PM XXCoder: basically they watch old crappy movies and joke about it
10:35 PM XXCoder: can be really funny
10:38 PM XXCoder: well off to get something to eat. later
11:09 PM XXCoder: back, I am
