01:52 AM grillon: hi there
01:55 AM Longbow: HELLO! After the electricity went out. I rebooted the PC the next day and now Linuxcnc will not start!
01:56 AM Longbow: problem: Latency in order of 10-12ms!
01:56 AM Longbow: What happened!?
01:56 AM Longbow: Jitter should be 20us not 10ms
01:56 AM Longbow: running wheezy + 2.8 master for like 5 months no problems
01:56 AM L29Ah: have you booted in a non-rt kernel?
01:57 AM grillon: sorry to disturb a friend of mine just bought a cnc eleksMill(eleks mana electronic a. is linuxCNC compatible with? How could I know?
01:58 AM grillon: (eleks mana electronic hardware)
01:58 AM Longbow: non-rt kernel? how to check? I did not change anything
01:58 AM L29Ah: dunno, `uname`?
01:58 AM Longbow: IIRC I was running the non-rt
01:59 AM archivist: grillon, usually anything can be retrofitted with linuxcnc, amount of work varies from config only to replace the electronics
01:59 AM Longbow: How can just a simple reboot affect the jitter from uS to ms?
02:01 AM L29Ah: btw, can i easily go from linuxcnc on x86 and lpt to linuxcnc on arm and gpio?
02:01 AM grillon: archivist: thank you. how do I proceed to evaluate?
02:02 AM archivist: grillon, does it interface on a parallel port
02:02 AM grillon: http://forum.eleksmaker.com/topic/20/eleksmill丨assembly-connection
02:02 AM grillon: archivist: on USB
02:03 AM grillon: archivist: I put a link to a schema
02:03 AM grillon: archivist: I have to go but I'll be back soon see you
02:03 AM grillon: brb
02:04 AM archivist: L29Ah, possibly, I do believe arm is tested on the buildbot, dunno which hardware/arm though
02:04 AM Longbow: I am running Linux LinuxCNC 3.4-9-rtai-686-pae #1 SMP PREEMPT Debian 3.4.55-4linuxcnc i686 GNU/Linux
02:06 AM archivist: Longbow, check bios make sure power saving is disabled
02:06 AM L29Ah: archivist: the question is whether i can easily configure it to use gpio for stepper motor control and enjoy the same performance
02:07 AM Longbow: BIOS: loaded defaults and save.. I will now check again
02:07 AM Longbow: I am using a HP workstation hmm
02:08 AM archivist: L29Ah, I hear graphics is less good
02:19 AM Longbow: @arcgivist: no power saving enabled
02:19 AM Longbow: @archivist: loaded defaults and changed RAMs and still latency of 10-11ms
02:19 AM archivist: any changes to viseo settings
02:20 AM Longbow: the machine was milling 14hours... then right before end the electricity went out
02:20 AM Longbow: I made no changes whatsoever
02:21 AM Longbow: The computer is working fine for browsing the net and other tasks. but the Jitter is like 10650199ns :D
02:21 AM archivist: I have seen x get confused
02:21 AM Longbow: should I reinstall something?
02:21 AM archivist: if it has enabled the nvidia driver
02:22 AM Longbow: how to check? :)
02:22 AM Longbow: I have nvidia quadro
02:23 AM archivist: https://askubuntu.com/questions/28033/how-to-check-the-information-of-current-installed-video-drivers
02:23 AM Longbow: emcuser@LinuxCNC:~$ lspci | grep VGA 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation G71GL [Quadro FX 3500] (rev a1) emcuser@LinuxCNC:~$ find /dev -group video /dev/fb0 /dev/dri/card0 /dev/dri/controlD64 emcuser@LinuxCNC:~$ glxinfo | grep -i vendor server glx vendor string: SGI client glx vendor string: Mesa Project and SGI OpenGL vendor string: nouveau emcuser@LinuxCNC:~$
02:24 AM Longbow: nouveau?
02:25 AM archivist: there is something on the linuxcnc site about fixing latency problems
02:25 AM archivist: http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?TroubleShooting
02:28 AM Longbow: what could cause this massive slowness of the latency?
02:28 AM Longbow: Should I just reinstal everything? :/
02:29 AM archivist: reinstall teaches you nothing, I prefer diagnosis
02:30 AM Longbow: Nicely said :)
02:30 AM archivist: reinstall is the wondiws way
02:30 AM Longbow: But it bothers me because IN just one reboot it went kapoot. Noone did anything and now it just wont work
02:30 AM roycroft: you just disqualified yourself from being able to work in tech support at microsoft, archivist
02:31 AM archivist: hehe
02:31 AM roycroft: so kiss that dream career goodbye
02:31 AM archivist: I just retired
02:31 AM roycroft: the perfect time to start a new career :)
02:32 AM archivist: not at M$$$$$
02:32 AM archivist: I haz scruples
02:33 AM roycroft: i was just going to ask if you're planning on moving to the eu while you still can
02:33 AM roycroft: but then i remembered that it's not necessary
02:34 AM archivist: I voted the EU off our island :)
02:34 AM roycroft: if you want to go there you can just go to northern ireland and travel freely to the republic of ireland from there
02:34 AM roycroft: and from ireland to anywhere else in europe
02:36 AM grillon: hi I'm back
02:36 AM grillon: still there archivist?
02:36 AM archivist: I fell asleep
02:36 AM grillon: oh, what is your timezone?
02:36 AM archivist: England
02:36 AM grillon: lol
02:37 AM archivist: you can lift the arduino board and connect to the drivers direct
02:39 AM archivist: may need a breakout board to interface parallel port to the drivers
02:40 AM archivist: this design works http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Cnc-5-Axis-Interface-Breakout-Board-For-Stepper-Motor-Driver-Cnc-Mill-Mach3-BS-/201730661523
02:41 AM grillon: archivist: I don't have parallele port on my PC
02:41 AM archivist: then add one
02:42 AM archivist: USB is not suitable for realtime control, that unit is running grbl probably
02:43 AM grillon: archivist: ok I see. I guess it is not possible to replace arduino firmware or put another arduino?
02:46 AM archivist: linuxcnc is far too large to fit on an arduino
02:46 AM roycroft: or if you're in north america, you can get a mesa board for your pc and use that
02:46 AM archivist: large and flexible
02:46 AM roycroft: you can do that elsewhere in the world too, but mesa hardware is not popular in the uk and europe
02:46 AM archivist: a number in the uk are using mesa
02:48 AM roycroft: maybe jt-chicken-coop
02:48 AM grillon: ok roycroft, thank you :)
02:48 AM grillon: thank you for your help archivist: I'll think about parallele port too
02:48 AM roycroft: he is an authorized stocking distributor of mesanet products
02:48 AM archivist: grillon, why do you want to upgrade anyway
02:49 AM archivist: machine looks a bit small
02:49 AM grillon: archivist: I don't have windows and don't want to switch to it just for the cnc. I hope I can use it under linux
02:50 AM grillon: archivist: Yes it's very small :)
02:50 AM archivist: currently just send it text files (gcode)
02:51 AM archivist: no wondiws needed for that
02:51 AM grillon: I never use it yet. how could I send text file? is there a text interface to it?
02:52 AM archivist: read its manuals :)
02:55 AM grillon: I'll take time to go deeper. because they don't distribute anything for linux, I came here.
03:04 AM archivist: if the arduino has grbl as its control then google as there seems to be interfaces for linux
03:38 AM Longbow: I just tried wheezy Live and I get normal jitter 10us - 12us. On my normal installation of wheezy is 8-12ms :D
03:42 AM archivist: some driver/setting has changed, I bet the video
03:42 AM Longbow: I changed the graphic card to an old geforce and still the same
03:43 AM Longbow: should I reinstall the nvidia drivers?
03:43 AM archivist: uninstall nvidia
03:43 AM archivist: it grabs interrupts and time
03:46 AM Longbow: sudo apt-get purge nvidia*
03:46 AM Longbow: 0 to remove
03:46 AM Longbow: I do not have nvidia drivers?
03:49 AM Longbow: if I reinstall linuxcnc?
03:50 AM Longbow: linuxcnc could not remove 'rtai_sched'
03:51 AM Longbow: Error: module rtai_hal is in use by: rtai_sched
03:51 AM Longbow: ...when I start linuxcnc with my config
04:54 AM archivist: linuxcnc re install is not the cure, find the linux change
04:56 AM XXCoder: working while even slightly sick sucks
05:15 AM jthornton: morning
05:15 AM XXCoder: hey
05:18 AM jthornton: looks like we are in for some rain later in the week
05:18 AM XXCoder: nice. tomorrow is last hot day I think
05:19 AM XXCoder: today was "hot" but not too bad
05:36 AM jthornton: yea I'm ready for cooler weather it's been a hot summer here
05:38 AM XXCoder: I miss old rainforest biome summers here
05:38 AM XXCoder: it havent happened since 80s
05:38 AM XXCoder: it used to be cloudy 1/4 of time and rain in summers
05:39 AM XXCoder: now its amazing if we even get clouds
06:20 AM IchGucksLive: hi
06:22 AM XXCoder: hey fellow cnc machinist
06:22 AM IchGucksLive: last summer day here
06:22 AM jthornton: IchGucksLive: did you ask me about egg production the other day?
06:23 AM IchGucksLive: winter in view as wetterlady expects
06:23 AM IchGucksLive: jthornton: yes i did
06:23 AM jthornton: my chicks are 14 days old today so I have 4.5 months to wait for the first eggs
06:24 AM jthornton: my first batch would be laying now if they were not killed by a dog
06:24 AM IchGucksLive: oh starting from the almost bodden
06:24 AM IchGucksLive: friendly firer is the most haszzard to the chicken
06:27 AM IchGucksLive: Longbow: still here
06:30 AM Tom_L: morning
06:41 AM IchGucksLive: Tom_L: how is it going toolChange
06:45 AM IchGucksLive: hi JesusAlos best summer weather outside
06:47 AM IchGucksLive: off till later
07:51 AM minibnz: hey all how is everything?.. i'm building me a co2 laser... i wanna cut 5-10mm metal.....
07:51 AM jdh: really
07:52 AM minibnz: just received some parts so i can quantify what the laser is doing.... made me a current meter that should be capable of measuring 100mA @50kv and have parts in my hand to make a volt meter that will read upto 50kv..
07:52 AM minibnz: the only thing is... 50kv scares the piss out o me..
07:52 AM jdh: that would take like 3kw+?
07:53 AM minibnz: the beer in my other hand says not to try anythin tonight... i'm kinda agree'in with it..
07:54 AM minibnz: i was looking into things and it seems like 180w of light with oxygen will cut 5mm steel no pr0blems.. so 10mm might be a beer dream but its good to have goals in life isnt it?
07:54 AM minibnz: 3-5mm ally an i am happy...
07:56 AM minibnz: i have in my hand a 1000,000,000 ohm resistor rated at 50kv.. so i can make a volt meter.. i purchased 2 one is for the volt meter and one is for a megatesta
07:56 AM minibnz: i have been doing electronics for over 20yrs and i didnt think they made and sold 1gig ohm resistors...cost me $45au ea
07:57 AM minibnz: did i mention 50kv scares me....
07:58 AM minibnz: i think i am going to need a body condom just so i don't forget its live and touch the wrong thing.. the PSU i am starting with can deliver 35mA @50kv Max out..
07:59 AM jdh: 3mm Al sounds unlikely also. be safe!
07:59 AM minibnz: my end goal is a 4 tube folded co2 laser...if its cuts metal that would be great.. i
08:00 AM minibnz: i have purchased some nice german made goggles...
08:00 AM jdh: that sounds like a better goal
08:01 AM minibnz: that ebay says are 70% filtered and 30% transmisiv but the 30% part scares me... 30% of 200 watts is 60watts..
08:03 AM jdh: do you have good insurance?
08:03 AM minibnz: my background is in electronics.. and building random shit... i have me a CNC mill and a manual lathe (controller board dead ATM) so i think i should be able to make enough bits to convince my other mates to help me finish off the rest.. ( they are real fabricators by trade and training and have real mad skillz)
08:04 AM minibnz: yeah i have heard about peoples burnin down their shack with a laser...
08:04 AM jdh: only one here that I know of.
08:06 AM minibnz: im starting with half meter tubes. that way if i find i dont got enough power to cut what i wants.. (to convince my buddies) i can simply rebuild the thing with longer 1m tubes maybe upgrade a psu and i am good..
08:07 AM minibnz: there is one thing that my mates have asked for.. and i have not seen advertised on modern lasers.. and thats a "follow my hand draw lines" mode..
08:09 AM minibnz: my mates are not compurter peoples they are into cars... so they asked if i can add a thing where they phyically draw on a sheet of steel and the laser follows that line.. would make cutting out patch panels for old cars real easy..
08:11 AM minibnz: i thought about it and said yes but only if we can record the part so we can make multiples of them easily.. i own VW beetles and they all rust in a specific pattern we can make patch panels that suit really easy and i am sure other cars rust out in certain way too
08:13 AM minibnz: ok i am about to try out my 50kv volt meter.. if no one hears from me in the next hour or so, someone hurry and claim all my nice toys.. and stay out of the wooden box under my bed.. just burn it.. don t open it.. for the love of god dont open it...
08:14 AM _methods: 5-10mm metal takes quite a laser
08:14 AM minibnz: so 4 meters of glowing tube is not enough?
08:15 AM _methods: you'd probably need a 2000kw laser to cut steel 10mm
08:15 AM _methods: alum is worse
08:15 AM minibnz: i know ally suck out the heat
08:15 AM _methods: we have a 4000kw trumpf laser and it doesn't like cutting 10mm alum
08:16 AM minibnz: ahhh sweet a real life data point.. and from someone not trying to sell me shit :)
08:16 AM minibnz: ok so 10mm is a dream... is 5mm possible on 200w
08:16 AM _methods: no not with 200w
08:17 AM _methods: i doubt you can cut any metal with 200w
08:17 AM minibnz: even with oxy assist?
08:17 AM archivist: get a band saw
08:17 AM _methods: i doubt it even with methane assist lol
08:17 AM jdh: 4000kw is a lot of kw
08:17 AM minibnz: awww if i was blowin it out my arse it might :)
08:17 AM _methods: plz don't try methane though unless you know what you're doing
08:18 AM jdh: perhaps a unit prob there?
08:18 AM minibnz: i understand thickness has a logarithmic power curve...
08:18 AM archivist: pulse v continuous
08:19 AM minibnz: yeah i am just thinking continuous not q switched
08:19 AM minibnz: or pulsed..
08:20 AM minibnz: if i was going to go q switch i would consider getting my yag parts out..
08:20 AM _methods: jdh: yeah sorry 4000w
08:22 AM _methods: 10.6um wavelength
08:22 AM _methods: 20mm max steel, 15mm max stainless, 10mm max alum
08:23 AM minibnz: oh and thats for a 4kw laser?
08:23 AM _methods: yeah
08:23 AM minibnz: is that output light or input power?
08:23 AM _methods: that's output power
08:24 AM minibnz: now is that so its commercially viable or is that whats require to be possible to cut that?
08:25 AM minibnz: hard questions to be asked for someone as drunked as me.. )
08:25 AM _methods: commercially viable?
08:25 AM _methods: we paid like $750,000 for our laser
08:26 AM _methods: and yeah that's what's required to cut metals of that thickness
08:26 AM minibnz: yeah just wondering if you are doing mega quantities..
08:26 AM _methods: yes
08:26 AM _methods: well not really
08:26 AM _methods: we're a job shop
08:26 AM _methods: so we don't do a lot of large production runs
08:27 AM _methods: a big run for us might be like 10,000 parts
08:27 AM _methods: but we usually do like 5-1000 piece runs
08:27 AM minibnz: just trying to quantify it... like doing a job on a mill thats a bit too small foe the job but the number of units makes it ok sorta thinking, trying to apply that to laser cutting
08:28 AM minibnz: ok thats good to know...
08:28 AM _methods: yeah it's not a small investment
08:29 AM _methods: i think for some smaller sized shop the way to go is to get one of these cheap chinese fiber lasers
08:29 AM minibnz: i see ads for cutters that have a 180w laser and claim 5mm+ metal. for 12kau
08:29 AM _methods: you can pick one of those up for like $40,000
08:29 AM _methods: yeah those are fiber lasers
08:29 AM _methods: and they can probably do that
08:29 AM minibnz: nah these are co2..
08:29 AM _methods: oh a 180w co2
08:29 AM _methods: yeah i wouldn't believe that
08:29 AM minibnz: yeah 2m tube..
08:30 AM sync_: with o2, probably
08:30 AM sync_: but it will be slow and the quality will suck
08:30 AM _methods: i suppose it might be possible
08:30 AM minibnz: yes oxy assist..
08:30 AM sync_: ime just outsourcing laser stuff is usually the best
08:30 AM _methods: but what sync_ said
08:30 AM minibnz: was thinking 10mm would be possible just ulgy as all hell...
08:30 AM sync_: unless you have the cash to buy a proper machine and pay it off in a reasonable time
08:31 AM _methods: not with 200w
08:31 AM _methods: why not go plasma?
08:31 AM minibnz: 5mm would be possible with oxy and messy.
08:32 AM _methods: entry price is much lower for plasma
08:32 AM _methods: and high def plasma cuts quite nicely
08:32 AM minibnz: plasma too easy where is too coool factor in plasma???
08:32 AM _methods: hahah
08:32 AM minibnz: oh yeah plasma is way cheaper but i would like the accuracy and grainularity the laser provides.
08:33 AM _methods: i didn't know cool was a factor in it lol
08:33 AM _methods: well i'd personally go for one of those chinese fiber lasers
08:33 AM sync_: a laser that underpowered will not be more accurate than a plasma
08:33 AM _methods: they're quite cheap for the capability they provide
08:33 AM minibnz: hey i will just be a tank of sharks away from being a criminal master mind...
08:34 AM archivist: google keep the home fires burning lyrics
08:34 AM minibnz: hehehheeehe i rent so its not so much of a problem 0
08:36 AM uwe_ is now known as uwe
08:36 AM uwe is now known as uwe_
08:37 AM sync_ is now known as sync
08:38 AM minibnz: i have two 300mm sq slabs of granite 1/2 inch thick setup as bookends on my workbench... that should give me a few minutes before the catches fire and i have to run....
08:42 AM minibnz: oh wow maths do works... i calculated i needed a 1gig ohm resistor to measure 50kv on my oldschool analog panel meter, my psu says it can provide 50kv... when i turn the psu to max the voltage goes just short of full scale... that seems to work.. not looking for a really accurate reading +/- 2kv is fine :)
08:44 AM minibnz: i dont have the balls to test the PSU's short circuit current limit on my current meter.. and i dont think 50 micro amps will register on my sensor i made... i get 4mv/1mA

11:43 AM Loetmichel: re from work... and the next expensive black and white picture... (~90kmh where 70kmh is allowed.) My fault, although a bit annoing. They placed "warning, wildlife crossing: (70kmh)" signs along a street thru a patch of wood last month... today they placed the mobile speed trap :-(
11:56 AM IchGucksLive: hi all from a nice summer day in germany
11:57 AM IchGucksLive: Loetmichel: modern cars got a speed liniter
11:57 AM Loetmichel: 1999 BMW 318i convertible != modern
11:58 AM IchGucksLive: US weather service anounces a new Color on record rain fall
11:58 AM IchGucksLive: as never reatched 50" in one event
11:59 AM Loetmichel: also i said it was my fault. i just think it is kind of a steal to place an arbritary speed limit that has no visible reason and then "strategically" place the automated speed trap at the place where most will already accelerate towards the highway ramp.
11:59 AM IchGucksLive: Crom: how has been the night of relefe
11:59 AM IchGucksLive: Loetmichel: fixed radar or mobile
12:00 PM Loetmichel: mobile (the "anhänger" type, no tow car/operator in sight)
12:01 PM IchGucksLive: Loetmichel: you know this how old must a car bee to get a H
12:03 PM Loetmichel: 30 years
12:03 PM Loetmichel: and in "A" or "B" condition
12:04 PM Loetmichel: to be "worthy of preserving"
12:08 PM Renny: Good morning/afternoon/evening, CNC humans!
12:08 PM IchGucksLive: hi renny
12:09 PM IchGucksLive: cnc people only sleep on large part
12:09 PM Renny: Heh.
12:10 PM Renny: So, I've been wondering.. Is there any sort of budget 4 axis cnc mill control circuitry magic?
12:10 PM IchGucksLive: yes
12:10 PM Loetmichel: IchGucksLive: https://cl.ly/1B2Z1V1k1I3S/Image%202017-08-29%20at%206.36.14%20PM.png
12:10 PM Loetmichel: such a trap
12:10 PM pfred1: it's a trap!
12:10 PM Renny: :b
12:11 PM pfred1: so is trying to compile LibreCAD on this system apparently
12:11 PM Loetmichel: pfred1: a speed trap actually ;)
12:11 PM Renny: What is this? D:
12:11 PM IchGucksLive: Renny: like my one 4axis https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sqx9w80diKo
12:11 PM Renny: Hm..
12:12 PM IchGucksLive: pfred1: use the original Qcad
12:12 PM pfred1: I have that
12:12 PM IchGucksLive: hit my nick double
12:12 PM pfred1: I wanted to see if i liked a newer version of LibreCAD a bit better or not
12:12 PM pfred1: I hate all CAD
12:13 PM pfred1: but with CNC there's little choice
12:13 PM IchGucksLive: Renny: this is the control http://heimwerkermarkt-tretter.de/4achs_elek
12:13 PM IchGucksLive: renny are you around utha
12:14 PM pfred1: awfully tight squeeze you have going on there
12:14 PM pfred1: what are those drives?
12:14 PM Renny: Oh, that is rather good wiring there. What is the control board?
12:14 PM pfred1: it's good til that cheap SMPS burns out
12:15 PM IchGucksLive: Renny: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I00ArvYvZgI
12:16 PM IchGucksLive: Renny: more industrial http://heimwerkermarkt-tretter.de/5achs_elek
12:17 PM pfred1: I never did take a pic after I changed one drive http://i.imgur.com/2frKz9O.jpg
12:17 PM pfred1: P233 PC case FTW!
12:17 PM IchGucksLive: the tb6600
12:17 PM pfred1: you know it cheap powah
12:18 PM pfred1: they all match now
12:18 PM IchGucksLive: pfred1: the clamb board is bigger then the psu
12:19 PM IchGucksLive: pfred1: top left is this a AC/DC
12:19 PM pfred1: the relay?
12:19 PM IchGucksLive: left to the psu
12:19 PM pfred1: the relay switches the AC line in to the PSU
12:20 PM IchGucksLive: pfred1: you like the Hard Stuff
12:20 PM pfred1: sure why not?
12:20 PM pfred1: nothing worthwhile is ever wasy
12:20 PM pfred1: easy even
12:40 PM IchGucksLive: pfred1: renny must have been to fastinated to stay
12:42 PM IchGucksLive: hi hsd
12:43 PM * HSD waves
12:43 PM IchGucksLive: lots of people this day from around utha
12:43 PM IchGucksLive: renny just left
12:44 PM HSD: we like our cnc's
12:44 PM IchGucksLive: as we all do
12:44 PM HSD: :)
12:44 PM IchGucksLive: if it runs as planed :p
12:46 PM pfred1: I like my CNC it is generating G Code that I'm not too wild about as of yet
12:47 PM IchGucksLive: pfred1: thats the best as the CNC does act on its own command SIFI
12:48 PM pfred1: I can't say as I'm too good at it
12:48 PM IchGucksLive: last week the first Drivingschool opend on autonom car driving
12:48 PM IchGucksLive: pfred1: we all started on a sqare then did a Circle and ended up on CRC
12:49 PM pfred1: I need a square inside of a swuare
12:50 PM pfred1: I need a square inside of a square even
12:50 PM pfred1: now last week I copied and pasted soemthing out of Inkscape into another program but now I forgot how I did it
12:50 PM IchGucksLive: and then got to this -> https://www.maschinensucher.de/vid/3428227.
12:51 PM IchGucksLive: incscape expots DXF
12:51 PM IchGucksLive: qcad optimise and heeks makes gcode
12:51 PM pfred1: this just did it with differential colors it was pretty neat
12:52 PM IchGucksLive: pfred1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rv1v5qj7Rek
12:52 PM pfred1: I use PyCAM for stuff like that
12:52 PM pfred1: though is it ever slow
12:52 PM pfred1: I need to setup servers on my other machines to speed it up a bit
12:53 PM pfred1: I did one part and it took 28 hours?
12:53 PM IchGucksLive: frustrating
12:54 PM pfred1: http://i.imgur.com/Hj9r67a.jpg
12:54 PM IchGucksLive: why dad way
12:54 PM IchGucksLive: top down
12:54 PM IchGucksLive: conrouring
12:55 PM IchGucksLive: let me check
12:56 PM pfred1: I looked into getting that Psyco stuff it mentions but that's been abandoned now
12:57 PM pfred1: when I mentioned the stuff that replaced it Python people just told me good luck
12:57 PM pfred1: which I took to be a bad sign
01:07 PM Tom_L: IchGucksLive, remap is working now
01:07 PM IchGucksLive: you are the best
01:07 PM Tom_L: i had help from the best
01:07 PM IchGucksLive: why dident you stay on M19
01:07 PM Tom_L: remap calls M19
01:08 PM Tom_L: then once the spindle locks it can call the rest of the carousel code
01:09 PM IchGucksLive: cool TC
01:11 PM Tom_L: don't have one, just wanted to test the code
01:16 PM IchGucksLive: make your own
01:17 PM IchGucksLive: based on the kress open TV
01:17 PM IchGucksLive: TC
01:19 PM IchGucksLive: Tom_L: sk20 is cheep
01:19 PM IchGucksLive: as on ER20 based
01:20 PM IchGucksLive: position 10 pockets around the workplace and make the pocket location fix
01:20 PM IchGucksLive: or make a carousell on ine corner
01:28 PM IchGucksLive: im off gn(
03:03 PM gloops: not really looked but does linuxcnc do any cam jobs? noticed a few clips on youtube, like greyscale to depth map etc
03:04 PM HighInBC: I don't see why not
03:04 PM JT-Shop: IIRC Andy did some cam cutting on his lathe
03:05 PM gloops: i mean does it generate g code
03:05 PM cradek: guessing he means CAM, not cam
03:05 PM gloops: right cradek
03:05 PM cradek: linuxcnc proper doesn't generate gcode, it reads it
03:06 PM cradek: there are some gcode generators, including the one that uses an image for input
03:06 PM gloops: plugin?
03:08 PM gloops: ahh got it on the website
03:37 PM Deejay: gn8
03:39 PM gloops is now known as Goodlord
03:58 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, some remap config notes if you're interested: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/configs/screenshots/Remap_notes.txt
04:12 PM JT-Shop: thanks
04:13 PM Tom_L: if you see something missing lemme know but i picked out what i think was all of it for orient etc
04:13 PM Tom_L: except all the init stuff like loadrt and addf
04:16 PM Tom_L: http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/uploads/orient.svg
04:16 PM Tom_L: used that as a guide
04:20 PM CaptHindsight: hmmm 4000W laser or 4000KW = 4MegaW laser? :)
04:20 PM CaptHindsight: _methods: ^^
04:21 PM HighInBC: shark mounted?
04:22 PM CaptHindsight: sharks mounted on a 4MW laser
04:22 PM HighInBC: scary
04:23 PM Crom: as long as they aren't flying sharks with 4Megawatt lasers mounted on their heads
04:26 PM CaptHindsight: 4uM
04:26 PM CaptHindsight: 4uW
04:27 PM CaptHindsight: megamegasharkshark
04:49 PM gregcnc: Can I use linuxcnc to control this? https://www.solarmill.com/solarkart/
04:51 PM JT-Shop: phipli: http://paste.ubuntu.com/25427450/
04:52 PM phipli: inverted logic on some boards
04:52 PM phipli: sometimes there is a jumper to set it, other times there isn't
04:53 PM phipli: If there isn't, invert the logic in your program
04:53 PM phipli: if you try to use the other contact out of normally open / normally closed you just end up with issues when it powers up
04:53 PM JT-Shop: ok, was driving me nuts lol
04:53 PM phipli: heh
04:53 PM phipli: yeah
04:53 PM phipli: the one I have controlling my spindle is the same
04:54 PM JT-Shop: I'm just putting a normal timer on a led shop light lol
04:54 PM phipli: :
04:55 PM phipli: * :)
04:55 PM phipli: that is what I ended up doing with our pigeon
04:55 PM phipli: just has a regular timer wired into a bulb holder stuck in her hutch
04:57 PM phipli: what type of relay board are you using?
05:00 PM JT-Shop: I have about 4 different ones lol
05:01 PM JT-Shop: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M0E6SQM
05:02 PM JT-Shop: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00SKG6OM4
05:02 PM JT-Shop: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00M90UUOU
05:02 PM JT-Shop: I just noticed why the 4 up won't work lol it's 24v
05:03 PM phipli: heh
05:03 PM phipli: I spent ages trying to work out why a 1602 wasn't working once
05:03 PM phipli: worried I'd toasted it
05:03 PM phipli: realised that it was just that it wouldn't work from 3.3v
05:04 PM phipli: I'd got too used to 5v things working just fine with 3.3 and hadn't even thought about it
05:05 PM phipli: have you seen these : https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NBGGCHK/
05:05 PM phipli: they've started doing ethernet adapters for them
05:05 PM phipli: *adaptors
05:06 PM JT-Shop: wow, lots of relays
05:06 PM phipli: they do smaller ones :)
05:06 PM phipli: without the ethernet board those things are amazingly cheap
05:06 PM JT-Shop: how do you turn them on and off?
05:08 PM phipli: the non-ethernet ones are opto-isolated logic driven
05:08 PM phipli: the ethernet thing plugs into a 2x10 header
05:08 PM phipli: https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/71fnDjfIzFL._SL1000_.jpg
05:08 PM phipli: on the right hand side
05:09 PM phipli: this board doesn't look like it has routed separation...
05:09 PM phipli: some do though
05:09 PM phipli: https://www.banggood.com/16-Relay-Trigger-12V-LM2596-Power-Control-Module-with-Optocoupler-Protection-p-1047959.html
05:09 PM phipli: that one does
05:21 PM JT-Shop: new record 7 chicks on my hands and arms at once :)
05:21 PM roycroft: strange new fetish you have acquired, jt-shop :)
05:23 PM JT-Shop: roycroft: changing the brooder from top lid to side door made a huge difference in chicks not being scared every time you get near them
05:23 PM roycroft: that makes sense
05:23 PM JT-Shop: I had a good design from a human point of view but lousy for chicks lol
05:24 PM roycroft: the sky suddenly opening up and a potential storm pouring in is scarier than a portal opening on the side
05:24 PM JT-Shop: they are hard wired to run for you life if anything approaches from above like a hawk etc
05:24 PM roycroft: or worse than a storm, a dragon
05:25 PM JT-Shop: getting down on their level made a huge difference, they are relaxed with me at 2 weeks like my first ones were almost at 4 1/2 months
05:26 PM JT-Shop: phipli: 1/4" crickets are perfect size for 2 week old chicks :)
05:26 PM roycroft: i've found that to be the case with critters, generally
05:28 PM roycroft: but the more instinctive and less cognitive the critter, the more important it is to approach at the critter's level
05:28 PM roycroft: and on a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is pure instinct and 20 is pure cognition, chickens are about a 2 or a 3
05:29 PM roycroft: and baby chicks about a 0.5 to 0.6 :)
05:34 PM JT-Shop: it's amazing that a 2 day old chick knows what to do to take care of itself after you point out the water source
05:35 PM JT-Shop: onvif is a cool video camera tool
05:36 PM roycroft: yeah, but that's mostly imprinting
05:36 PM roycroft: aqi is down to 151 today
05:37 PM roycroft: still hazardous
05:37 PM roycroft: but it got up to 240 yesterday
05:37 PM roycroft: today i can go outside, stand, breathe normally, and it is not too irritating
05:37 PM roycroft: yesterday it was really hard to breathe
05:38 PM roycroft: the problem is that we have fires to the nne, ne, e, and sw
05:38 PM JT-Shop: tonight starts the first dark sleep night for them for 2 hours
05:39 PM roycroft: the only wind that really clears the smoke out at all is a westerly wind, which we fortunately have today
05:39 PM roycroft: but our prevailing wind this time of year is southwesterly
05:39 PM roycroft: and we've had northern and northeasterly winds much of the time for the past several weeks, which is quite unusual
05:40 PM roycroft: and has brought smoke down from canada and from the fires in the cascades
05:40 PM roycroft: the other day the wind shifted to the sw, and blew that northern smoke back
05:40 PM roycroft: but brought in smoke from the fire down on the coast by california
05:41 PM roycroft: did the chicks freak out during the eclipse?
05:41 PM roycroft: or did you keep their lights on?
05:43 PM pfred1: it doesn't get that dark
05:43 PM pfred1: I went down to see the total eclipse
05:44 PM roycroft: i was in the path of totality, and it got pretty dark
05:44 PM pfred1: yeah pretty dark but not can't see yoru hand in fron of your face nighttime dark
05:44 PM roycroft: i was viewing it at a wildlife sanctuary that was full of birds, and it got really quiet during totality
05:44 PM pfred1: I watched from a park in Columbia, SC
05:44 PM pfred1: fairly close to the centerline of totality
05:45 PM pfred1: so we like got the full effect
05:45 PM roycroft: i saw an annular eclipse years ago (july of '63, i think)
05:45 PM roycroft: it is one of my earliest really clear memories
05:45 PM pfred1: this was my first total eclipse
05:45 PM roycroft: and it was nothing like a total eclipse
05:45 PM pfred1: probably my last too
05:45 PM roycroft: probably mine as well
05:45 PM pfred1: I traveled 574 miles to see it
05:46 PM roycroft: the next one that i might see is in 2043, i believe
05:46 PM roycroft: and i'll be really old then
05:46 PM pfred1: it was freaking awesome though
05:46 PM pfred1: 2024
05:46 PM roycroft: and would have to go down to the sf bay area to see it
05:46 PM pfred1: 7 years from now
05:46 PM roycroft: the 2024 one is back east
05:46 PM roycroft: kentucky to florida
05:46 PM pfred1: yeah iut's not around the corner for me here
05:46 PM roycroft: the next one in my part of the world is a long way off
05:47 PM roycroft: i don't mind going to the bay area
05:47 PM pfred1: you pretty much have to go to eclipses as opposed to waiting for them to come to you
05:47 PM roycroft: i've driven down there many times - it's a long drive, but a doable 1 day drive
05:47 PM roycroft: eugene had 99.7% totality
05:47 PM pfred1: my ride was 8 and a half hours but home with trafic it was 14 hours
05:47 PM roycroft: but i drove ~30 miles north to get complete totality
05:47 PM roycroft: i was really fortunate
05:48 PM pfred1: meh 100% was the ticket
05:48 PM roycroft: yup
05:48 PM roycroft: and i pondered going even farther north
05:48 PM pfred1: when it went total it was smething
05:48 PM roycroft: not for the few extra seconds of totality
05:48 PM roycroft: but because it would be even darker
05:48 PM roycroft: but i decided not to fight traffic
05:48 PM pfred1: I think I had 2 minutes and 34 seconds of totality it was enough
05:48 PM roycroft: so i drove just past the edge of the path of totality
05:48 PM roycroft: it was just under 2 minutes for me
05:49 PM pfred1: yeah that would do it
05:49 PM roycroft: and those were the longest 2 minutes and the shortest 2 minutes of my life
05:49 PM pfred1: it was the only time I'll ever spend on an alien planet
05:49 PM roycroft: the word "awesome" is quite overused these days
05:49 PM pfred1: because when it went total it was like being on another world
05:49 PM roycroft: but the time of totalty instilled awe in me and everyone else who saw it
05:50 PM pfred1: right before when the shadows got all sharp was pretty weird too
05:50 PM roycroft: yes
05:50 PM pfred1: it was like something was drastically wrong
05:50 PM roycroft: i spent as much time watching the shadows and my surroundings as watching the sun
05:51 PM roycroft: it was like compressing a sunset/sunrise into a couple minutes
05:51 PM roycroft: but different
05:51 PM pfred1: I can see how primitives freaked out when eclipses happened
05:51 PM roycroft: the shadows got sharper without getting longer
05:51 PM pfred1: I knew what was going on and it was bizarre
05:51 PM pfred1: but we had a great time
05:51 PM roycroft: i did as well
05:51 PM pfred1: people heered when it started
05:52 PM pfred1: cheered even
05:52 PM roycroft: it was really a tremendous experience
05:52 PM roycroft: and
05:52 PM roycroft: with all the strive and division that we've had in this country lately
05:52 PM roycroft: an event like that did a lot to bring people together, even if only for a short while
05:52 PM pfred1: the eclipse showed just how insubstantial we all are
05:53 PM pfred1: like insects infesting this planet
05:53 PM roycroft: it definitely alters perspective :)
05:53 PM pfred1: the Moon is going over the Sun and there's nothing you can do about it!
05:53 PM pfred1: puny mortals!
05:55 PM roycroft: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_J5rBxeTIk
05:55 PM phipli: night folks
05:56 PM pcw_mesa: I saw the 1979 total eclipse
05:56 PM pcw_mesa: I still remember that near totality that I could see shadows of wheat stalks on the roadway when the plants were about 1/4 mile away
05:57 PM pfred1: roycroft it's amazing how little they knoew when they wrote this song
05:57 PM roycroft: that song is from the early '90s
05:57 PM pfred1: yup
05:57 PM roycroft: not too long ago
05:57 PM pfred1: before we put any big telescopes in space
05:57 PM pfred1: pre Hubble
05:58 PM roycroft: and hubble was still broken when that song was written
05:58 PM pfred1: was it even up?
05:58 PM roycroft: remember - it had the faulty curve
05:58 PM roycroft: yes
05:58 PM pfred1: hmmm
05:58 PM roycroft: it went up in 1990
05:58 PM roycroft: and got fixed in '93
05:59 PM pfred1: well I'm stoked for when the Webb scope comes on line
05:59 PM roycroft: it was pretty useless until then
05:59 PM pfred1: they made it everything the Hubble should have been
05:59 PM pfred1: because we didn'
05:59 PM pfred1: because we didn't know
05:59 PM roycroft: hubble was a good first effort at a giant space telescope
06:00 PM roycroft: and we learned an awful lot from it
06:00 PM pfred1: I think it looks in the infared?
06:00 PM pfred1: so it will be able to look through interstellar dust and junk
06:00 PM roycroft: uv, visible, and near ir
06:00 PM pfred1: and it's huge!
06:00 PM pfred1: 21 foot mirror?
06:00 PM roycroft: or are you talking about the webb telescope?
06:01 PM pfred1: yes the Webb
06:01 PM roycroft: that will have instrumentation for visible and medium ir
06:01 PM pfred1: it will make the Hubble look like something you got out of a gumball machine
06:01 PM roycroft: so a little more shift toward the ir end of the spectrum than hubble
06:02 PM pfred1: as i understand it the Webb will be able to image extrasolar planets
06:02 PM roycroft: it should be able to
06:02 PM pfred1: like we'll acutally be able to see the things
06:02 PM pfred1: that I've got to see
06:02 PM roycroft: it's 3x as big as hubble, and going deeper into the ir spectrum will help a lot
06:02 PM pfred1: that's like some science fiction stuff there
06:03 PM roycroft: i was born just before the beginning of the space age
06:03 PM pfred1: I was born right at the beginning og it
06:04 PM pfred1: well really the nazis put V2s into space
06:04 PM roycroft: and it's been amazing growing up as our space program and knowledge of the universe has increased exponentially
06:04 PM roycroft: but i'm also a little sad because i know how much more we're going to learn shortly after i pass
06:04 PM pfred1: but that was more by accident than design
06:04 PM roycroft: the next 50 years are going to be incredible as far as our knowledge of how the universe works goes
06:05 PM pfred1: maybe things really haven't kept pace lately
06:05 PM roycroft: our knowledge of science, generally
06:05 PM Tom_L: it'll just confuse them more
06:05 PM pfred1: in the 60s we all thought we'd be living on the Moon before now
06:05 PM roycroft: the first successful heart transplant was a monumental achievement in medicine
06:05 PM roycroft: something we thought we'd never see
06:05 PM roycroft: now it's routine
06:06 PM pfred1: I was in a cardiac center a few years ago the place was busier than a McDonalds
06:06 PM roycroft: and now we're realistically approaching a point where we can just fix things instad of cutting them out and replacing them
06:06 PM roycroft: when i was young a heart attack was almost always fatal
06:06 PM pfred1: it still can be
06:06 PM roycroft: now it's just an inconvenience for many
06:06 PM roycroft: yes, of course
06:06 PM pfred1: a buddy of mine's Dad collapsed on the Thankgiving table
06:06 PM roycroft: but surviving a heart attack is no longer considered miraculous
06:06 PM pfred1: he was dead ebfore he hit
06:07 PM pfred1: it really messed my friend up seeing it
06:07 PM roycroft: soon, chemotherapy and surgery for cancer will seem like bleeding with leeches
06:07 PM pfred1: now he carries on about soy milk and stuff
06:08 PM roycroft: it's really an amazing time in which we live
06:08 PM pfred1: I suppose
06:08 PM pfred1: it does seem like we could be doing more often though
06:08 PM roycroft: it takes time for society to catch up with science
06:09 PM pfred1: it takes time for real breakthroughs to occur
06:09 PM pfred1: once a generation is the timescape
06:09 PM roycroft: yes, but we're on the verge of so many of them right now
06:09 PM pfred1: timescale
06:09 PM pfred1: yeah like nuclear fusion or AI
06:10 PM pfred1: how long have i been hearing about those?
06:10 PM pfred1: I'll be dead and they won't have cracked either
06:10 PM roycroft: nuclear fusion is always going to be problematic
06:10 PM roycroft: as far as ai, i'm glad that's not progressing really fast
06:10 PM pfred1: yeah if it ever happens that'll be the end of us
06:10 PM roycroft: in fact, i'm one of the ones who actively discourages pushing for it
06:11 PM pfred1: but you know people are trying and trying hard
06:11 PM roycroft: i'm a child of the '60s and '70s
06:11 PM pfred1: they want the fame and fortune
06:11 PM roycroft: i grew up with the early environmental movement
06:11 PM roycroft: and the folks who pushed back at unchecked technological innnovations
06:12 PM pfred1: meh the Earth can do some wacky stuff without our help
06:12 PM roycroft: i was and still am of the stuart brand/paul hawken school of "appropriate technology"
06:12 PM hazzy: Nuclear is almost the cleanest power source we've got, second only to hydro.
06:12 PM pfred1: supervolcanoes
06:12 PM roycroft: we need to continue to innovate and improve things
06:12 PM roycroft: but we should not adapt new technology just because it is shiny
06:12 PM pfred1: there's a natural nuclear reactor in Africa
06:12 PM roycroft: and that's what is happening a lot with ai
06:12 PM pfred1: they found it mining for uraninum
06:12 PM roycroft: and with computer use/internet use in general
06:13 PM pfred1: they found these isotopes that could have only been made in a reactor
06:13 PM pfred1: they were like WTF?
06:13 PM roycroft: a natural reactor would not surprise me at all
06:13 PM pfred1: yeah there was one in Africa
06:13 PM hazzy: Long ago ...
06:13 PM pfred1: just enough stuff it kicked off by itself
06:13 PM roycroft: i'd recommend not getting too close to it though :)
06:14 PM pfred1: I think it went out 100,000 years ago
06:14 PM pfred1: but still
06:14 PM roycroft: stare into a reactor cave and it might put your eye out!
06:14 PM pfred1: who would have thunk that nuclear power was so natural?
06:14 PM hazzy: Well, thats what the sun is!
06:14 PM pfred1: we can't do what the Sun does at least not continiously
06:14 PM roycroft: and we all know how tough the sun is
06:15 PM pfred1: we don't know how tough our Sun is
06:15 PM roycroft: our tiny, puny little moon totally blocked it a week ago
06:15 PM roycroft: so our sun is a wuss!
06:15 PM pfred1: it may be more goofed up than we realize
06:15 PM pfred1: we'er studying it
06:15 PM roycroft: it's pretty weird that the surface of the sun is relatively cool, while the corona is 10k time hotter
06:15 PM pfred1: solar flares
06:15 PM L29Ah: sun is not doing allah is doing
06:16 PM pfred1: ejecta
06:16 PM * roycroft heads to market
06:16 PM pfred1: we get hit by a massive flare and you'll be Allah look out!
06:17 PM roycroft: allah allah oxen free!
06:20 PM hazzy: One of my colleagues made a Fusor and achieved fusion
06:21 PM hazzy: but, or course, it took more power to maintain it that it produced
06:21 PM hazzy: neat anyway
06:21 PM hazzy: it was a very effective neutron source
06:22 PM hazzy: Could be useful for imaging and activation purposes...
