#linuxcnc Calendar

12:14 AM gloops: neat idea, for metal is a different ball game though, maybe with twin rack
12:16 AM XXCoder: Vitran: lol logo I thought it said pervy projects at first
12:16 AM XXCoder: that setup can do lighter metals with very shallow cuts
12:16 AM XXCoder: wonder what cam guy used
12:16 AM XXCoder: backlash is little bit ugly, you can see it push the other enddown when cittmg
12:16 AM XXCoder: *cutting
01:20 AM hazzy: Hurray!!!!
01:20 AM XXCoder: huzzah! whats good? :P
01:21 AM hazzy: Got arcs to work: http://i.imgur.com/kIwVqN5.png
01:21 AM hazzy: New back plot
02:22 AM Deejay: moin
02:34 AM IchGucksLive: morning from Germany
02:35 AM IchGucksLive: hazzy: will this be a new frontend
02:35 AM IchGucksLive: peepsalot: austin got pounded so how is it in the way of the Harvey path
02:40 AM IchGucksLive: off 2 garden
02:40 AM IchGucksLive: later
03:41 AM MarcelineVQ: hazzy: it's so happy
03:42 AM XXCoder: hazzy: is you making cam?
04:12 AM peepsalot: there's some intermittent high power electrical arcing happening nearby, lights up the whole sky and makes a buzz sound
04:13 AM XXCoder: thats probably transformer getting fried
04:20 AM XXCoder: peepsalot: if its one that powers your sector I'd recommand you to unplugf stuff.
04:22 AM peepsalot: no idea, i don't think it is because lights aren't flickering when it happens. its just surprising that it continues to do it so many times, i'd think it would eventually pop or open circuit
04:23 AM peepsalot: actually it may have stopped. it's been a few since I heard it
04:23 AM XXCoder: transformer breakdown is weird thing
04:24 AM peepsalot: and there it went again
04:26 AM XXCoder: it was waiting for you
05:11 AM jthornton: morning
05:11 AM XXCoder: hey jthornton
05:12 AM XXCoder: went to nice event today, hows ya
05:12 AM jthornton: doing good, trying to clear out the bushes and briars from the woods in front of my house
05:13 AM XXCoder: cool :)
05:13 AM XXCoder: hey you know anything about chemicals to rapidly rot small brush stump?
05:13 AM jthornton: tannerite works pretty fast
05:14 AM jthornton: neighbors may not like the sound...
05:14 AM XXCoder: how much ya think will do it?
05:14 AM XXCoder: err its explosive?
05:14 AM MarcelineVQ: :>
05:14 AM jthornton: aye
05:15 AM XXCoder: stumps is less than foot away from house front and glasses
05:15 AM jthornton: might not be a good choice then
05:15 AM XXCoder: ans we dont live in more remote areas :)
05:17 AM XXCoder: so what would rot stump rapidly? I dont think we can pull it up
05:17 AM jthornton: can you cut it off at ground level?
05:18 AM XXCoder: possibly, cant do anything for a bit anyway, so wanted some research
05:18 AM enleth: peepsalot: some crap might have fallen on high voltage lines, like a broken tree too small to bring the cables down but big enough to cause arcing when wind moves it
05:18 AM XXCoder: also considering how to network the house
05:18 AM enleth: peepsalot: a short on a tree branch is not enough to trip the breakers, so it keeps on arcing
05:18 AM jthornton: wifi or wired?
05:19 AM XXCoder: wired. videophones dont really like wifi
05:19 AM XXCoder: likely get some contractor as my sis in law dont want me doing it myself
05:22 AM enleth: XXCoder: just make damn sure it's a Cat6e, possibly S/FTP with proper shielding-compatible plugs and sockets, for future-proofing
05:23 AM enleth: a contractor could put in the shittiest pseudo-Cat5 with you none the wiser to maximize his profit
05:23 AM XXCoder: most I know of but S/FTP is new to me. I guess its more... recent than 2010?
05:23 AM jthornton: cat6 plugs are the easy ones with the comb and seperater
05:24 AM enleth: XXCoder: that's for shielded cable and foil separated pairs, best signal but a bit of a PITA to put plugs on due to all the shielding
05:24 AM enleth: XXCoder: basically dual shielding
05:24 AM XXCoder: by pair sheild AND overall sheilding?
05:25 AM XXCoder: now, that is fancy
05:25 AM enleth: yes
05:25 AM enleth: STP is just common shield, F/UTP is just foil layer around pairs
05:25 AM enleth: F/UTP might be a good middle ground too, much easier to install plugs
05:26 AM jthornton: I have 2000 feet of cat5 shielded but all I see in it is a drain wire no sheild...
05:26 AM XXCoder: im also kinda stuck on where to place the "server room"
05:27 AM enleth: thing is, 10GBase-T is going to become available in consumer stuff someday and shielded Cat6e is capable of carrying that
05:28 AM enleth: and your by-then-common 8k whole-wall TV might need that in a couple years to pull video from the media center
05:29 AM XXCoder: something to think about. thanks
06:08 AM jthornton: I'm putting up a 5' chain link fence around the coop this time
06:09 AM MarcelineVQ: is chain link cheaper than 2x4 noclimb?
06:11 AM jthornton: dunno what 2x4 noclimb is
06:12 AM MarcelineVQ: square fencing http://www.bradcharlesfencing.com/wp-content/gallery/noclimbwirefence/dsc01419.jpg
06:13 AM jthornton: is that just 2" x 4" fencing?
06:14 AM MarcelineVQ: no but that'sd a good point, you don't need noclimb for chickens. noclimb is whent he vertical aren't wound around the horizontals
06:14 AM jthornton: my guess is chain link is much more expensive, it's $7 a foot for 5' tall chain link fence and a roll of 2x4 is what $40 or so
06:14 AM jthornton: looks like welded 2x4 fencing to me
06:15 AM jthornton: the fence is not to keep the chickens in...
06:15 AM MarcelineVQ: it's generally welded, some have wire clips instead
06:16 AM MarcelineVQ: it's been so long since I'e used non-noclimb that I forgot it was an option haha, so don't woyy about that
06:16 AM MarcelineVQ: *worry
06:16 AM jthornton: google says no climb fence is for horses
06:16 AM MarcelineVQ: correct, it lets them pull out of a fence they're gotta jammed in
06:17 AM MarcelineVQ: the main differenc eis just that regular 2x4 is wrapped around itself in a way that tends to bind
06:17 AM MarcelineVQ: is the fence for coyotes? I think someone was mentioning coyotes before in here
06:17 AM jthornton: coyotes, dogs, coons, possums...
06:18 AM jthornton: a dog killed all my chickens a couple of weeks ado
06:18 AM XXCoder: everything that finds chicken yummy
06:18 AM MarcelineVQ: you'll want to bury it a foot or so as well then, which is a pain. the only way you'll keep climbes out is with the top being a cage or razor wire though :(
06:18 AM XXCoder: including humans
06:18 AM MarcelineVQ: *climbers out
06:19 AM MarcelineVQ: mink are annoying too when it comes to birds, they can squeeze into anywhere really
06:19 AM jthornton: to get into my coop the animal has to fit in a 1/2" x 1/2" square hole
06:20 AM MarcelineVQ: that your airhole mesh size?
06:20 AM jthornton: yes it's hardware cloth
06:21 AM MarcelineVQ: that's good stuff, we made a shaker for garden soil out of it and its lasting phenominally
06:21 AM jthornton: to sift out big chunks of stuff?
06:21 AM MarcelineVQ: yes and to mix
06:22 AM XXCoder: need to make one to sort the wonderful red rocks :P
06:22 AM MarcelineVQ: we used a cement mixer to redo al the beds mixing-wise, but it's a pita to pull out for little things
06:22 AM jthornton: I have two electric vibrator motors that would be good for a sifter
06:24 AM MarcelineVQ: Yeah it's a little too manual for my tastest currently, actually that's a good project idea to have ready for the start of next season, some frame and motor upgrades for the shaker
06:25 AM XXCoder: we'll just use the mesh, we dont be using it often at all
06:25 AM MarcelineVQ: yeah mesh is good for grading, you just put it on a wooden frame at an angle and throw rocks on it, the ones you want fall through on the way down
06:26 AM XXCoder: its mostly just to remove plant matter but yeah
06:27 AM XXCoder: the front of house is... badly graded and has bush stumps that needs to be removed.
06:27 AM XXCoder: jt here suggested tunnin something but its an explosive lol
06:27 AM XXCoder: im not sure what chemical would dissolve stump
06:28 AM MarcelineVQ: if you're really ambitious you could create a trommel from mesh, that could be a fun project
06:28 AM XXCoder: ah nice
06:28 AM XXCoder: way too fancy heh
06:30 AM jthornton: http://www.popularmechanics.com/home/how-to-plans/how-to/a11370/how-to-build-a-motorized-trommel-and-why-on-earth-you-would-want-to-17246926/
06:32 AM jthornton: lol a local plastic injection company uses a trommel just like that with bicycle rims
06:32 AM MarcelineVQ: bicycle rims is pretty smart
06:33 AM MarcelineVQ: they already have holes for riveting, heck you could use the spoke ends and holdders instead
06:33 AM jthornton: they get steel rims so they can just weld the material to it
06:33 AM jthornton: that link is over complicated you just need to power one roller
06:37 AM MarcelineVQ: I've recently recovered a nice power source from an old amp that should do okay for this sort of thing, guess I need to find a motor. This is a nice excuse to learn some cad as well
06:37 AM MarcelineVQ: cad could help decide whether a shaker table or a trommel is more convenient
08:10 AM Phipli: Hey folks
08:11 AM Phipli: Just ordered some UV solder resist (the green stuff on PCBs)
08:11 AM Phipli: Anyone played with the stuff at home before?
08:11 AM enleth: it's not easy to work with
08:11 AM Phipli: What is the tricky bit?
08:12 AM Phipli: Timings or masks or getting it even?
08:12 AM enleth: I don't think there is a single tricky bit, but the whole process is even more fiddly than etching the board in the first place
08:13 AM Phipli: The mess is what I have issues with re etching
08:13 AM Phipli: Specifically the yellow stains
08:13 AM enleth: most people I know who do their own boards, myself included, just order them from China when they need anything more than bare homemade etched copper
08:14 AM Phipli: At 1.50 for a tube this is curiosity as much as anything
08:14 AM enleth: save maybe for "silkscreen", as you can easily transfer laser-printed decals onto an etched board
08:15 AM enleth: so you have component names and all
08:15 AM enleth: what are you using for an etchant?
08:15 AM Phipli: 0.2mm engraving tool :)
08:16 AM enleth: well, what did you use when you got the stains
08:16 AM Phipli: Not done that since school - rented houses
08:17 AM enleth: if you used ferric chloride, try sodium persulfate
08:17 AM enleth: much safer and cleaner
08:17 AM sync_: not so sure about the safer
08:17 AM Phipli: It was ferric chloride back then yeah.
08:17 AM enleth: still stains and damages clothing, but not to the point of the fabric falling apart immediately
08:18 AM enleth: everything else is basically fine as long as you wipe it off
08:18 AM enleth: countertops, floor (as long as it's not carpet), etc.
08:19 AM enleth: sync_: it's a strong oxidizer, but otherwise it's not toxic and doesn't easily form any toxic compounds in contact with household items
08:19 AM Phipli: I can cut down to TQFP on my mill
08:19 AM sync_: you can get the stains out tho with oxalic acid
08:20 AM Phipli: Haven't been thinking of returning to chemical etch
08:20 AM enleth: incidental skin contact is also relatively safe unless you have very sensitive skin
08:20 AM enleth: it stains, and that's it really
08:20 AM Phipli: I'm half Irish - so probably do :)
08:20 AM sync_: there is no real mess tho, if you use food grade tubing to put it in
08:20 AM Phipli: Burn in minutes without sunblock
08:21 AM Phipli: :)
08:21 AM sync_: big clive has a video on it
08:21 AM enleth: all in all, much safer and more convenient to use than ferric chloride
08:21 AM Phipli: Sync saw that
08:21 AM Phipli: (+ grammar)
08:21 AM enleth: Phipli: doesn't milling PCBs produce a shitty surface around the traces?
08:21 AM Phipli: Not really
08:22 AM enleth: and the fiberglass laminate dust
08:22 AM Phipli: Just a moment
08:22 AM Phipli: Will find a pic
08:22 AM Phipli: Enleth : minimise cut depth with probing to avoid tool wear
08:22 AM enleth: FR4 is one of the few things people are strictly forbidden from machining on my machines
08:23 AM enleth: as none of them are properly shielded or suited for submerged milling
08:23 AM sync_: enleth: I dislike that I have to heat the persulfate
08:23 AM enleth: sync_: well, yes. that requires some dedicated equipment. a cheapest thermostatic aquarium heater usually wroks, though.
08:24 AM * phiplii appears on his laptop...
08:24 AM sync_: sure, but with fecl3 I just just dump the pcbs in and aerate
08:25 AM phiplii: http://elephantandchicken.co.uk/projects/LEDboard0.jpg
08:25 AM enleth: I still hate the stuff
08:25 AM phiplii: I can get a better finish that that now as that is not long after I started
08:25 AM enleth: phiplii: OK, looks decent enough
08:26 AM enleth: probably won't do if you need to remove copper from a significant area, though
08:26 AM phiplii: yeah
08:26 AM phiplii: avoid that
08:26 AM enleth: like a ground plane gap around a high voltage trace
08:26 AM phiplii: If I had to (not done anything high voltage)
08:27 AM phiplii: I'd switch to an end mill
08:27 AM phiplii: I switch tools for drilling / cutting anyway
08:27 AM enleth: how do you prevent glass dust from killing your machine?
08:28 AM phiplii: by hardly touching the glass
08:28 AM phiplii: I probe the surface and then cut the depth of the copper + a tiny bit extra
08:29 AM sync_: it is not so much of an issue, I know a company who runs a few dmgs for 16000h in G10 and then just replace the machine
08:29 AM phiplii: except for drilling / cutting out
08:29 AM phiplii: when I use a hoover
08:29 AM phiplii: also, the bits aren't tiny
08:29 AM phiplii: they don't float
08:30 AM phiplii: if you drill a hole you just get a molehill around the tool
08:31 AM enleth: sync_: it's a bit different when you're strictly making money in the process and the cost of a dedicated machine is calculated upfront into the pricing
08:32 AM phiplii: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7EctuSTL7-w#t=01m50s
08:32 AM phiplii: (someone elses video, but very little dust)
08:32 AM phiplii: they will be using a extractor - but it is quite clean all things considered
08:33 AM sync_: enleth: you are not going to wear out your mill if you mill some fiberglass on it in any reasonable time
08:34 AM phiplii: Don't know why he mills the soldermask though... seems excessive
08:34 AM phiplii: and difficult
08:37 AM enleth: sync_: if that dust gets onto the ways once, it stays there
08:37 AM sync_: no
08:39 AM MarcelineVQ: videos like that are exciting
08:40 AM JT-Shop: Phipli: http://gnipsel.com/images/chickens-2/
08:43 AM phiplii: enleth: some people place mineral oil on the pcb surface
08:43 AM phiplii: JT-Shop: lots eating from your hand :)
08:43 AM TurBoss: ahm ahm
09:03 AM phiplii is now known as phipli
09:03 AM JT-Shop: and climbing all over my arms
09:04 AM phipli: excellent - this is faster than the others isn't it?
09:04 AM phipli: they're accepting you more easily?
09:04 AM phipli: Do you figure it is down to removing the side?
09:18 AM SpeedEvil: There are machines designed for excessive dust
09:18 AM SpeedEvil: way covers, or pressurised cleaned oil film surfaces, ...
09:19 AM SpeedEvil: maybe both
09:24 AM phipli: my y axis screw is out of sight
09:24 AM phipli: z is the only one actually visible
09:25 AM phipli: x is almost enclosed but not quite
09:54 AM JT-Shop: that's my wife feeding them in the photo and yes the side entrance is the key as well as slow moving till they get used to you. Now I can reach in and they barely notice...
10:54 AM phipli: JT-Shop: thought it might be your wife (unless you are very unhairy), but didn't want to ask in case it was you :p
11:05 AM IchGucksLive: hi
11:06 AM phipli: Afternoon IchGucksLive
11:07 AM IchGucksLive: JT-Shop: homany eggs a day do you get
11:12 AM phipli: IchGucksLive: he doesn't get any
11:12 AM IchGucksLive: bad
11:12 AM phipli: they're only this big : http://gnipsel.com/images/chickens-2/7-21-17.jpg
11:14 AM IchGucksLive: im off till later
11:14 AM * phipli waves
11:15 AM phipli: useful schematic : https://cdn.hackaday.io/images/7409171428164997754.png
11:15 AM phipli: can get CH340G chips really cheap.
11:15 AM phipli: (they're a USB to TTL serial chip if you don't know)
11:18 AM HighInBC: looks similar to the wemos d1 mini schematic
11:18 AM phipli: makes sense
11:19 AM HighInBC: https://wiki.wemos.cc/_media/products:d1:mini_new_v2_2_0.pdf
11:19 AM phipli: I started making up a design for CH340G + atmega328 (at 3.3v) and one of those little 2.4" colour tfts that are really cheap
11:19 AM phipli: the issue with the screens is that they're 3.3v only
11:20 AM HighInBC: I am finding 3.3V MCUs to be the better choice if I can manage it
11:20 AM phipli: yeah
11:20 AM HighInBC: so many things run at 3.3V and those that run at 5V tend to understand 3.3V just fine
11:20 AM JT-Shop: well he left
11:20 AM phipli: so many peripherals and chips themselves are dropping in voltage now
11:20 AM JT-Shop: only 4 1/2 months for an egg now
11:20 AM HighInBC: microsd cards are a breeze to use on a 3.3V system
11:21 AM phipli: only issue with AVRs is that you can't do 16mhz
11:21 AM phipli: but... ESP8266 :)
11:21 AM HighInBC: right, at 3.3V they can only do 8Mhz right?
11:21 AM phipli: HighInBC: could get 12 I think
11:21 AM phipli: if I remember
11:21 AM phipli: they only just can't do 16
11:21 AM phipli: there is a graph in the datasheet for the 328
11:22 AM HighInBC: when I am deciding between an ESP8266 and an atmega328 I ask myself "Will this project suffer from a faster CPU, more RAM, WIFI, and less GPIOs?" If the answer is no, I use the ESP
11:22 AM phipli: does the CH340 have a clock out?
11:22 AM phipli: yeah - I spent a while doing a schematic with the esp... and then ran out of pins
11:23 AM HighInBC: a clock? I thought both USB and UART were clockless protocols
11:23 AM phipli: was a little irritated.
11:23 AM phipli: USB is 12mhz
11:23 AM tpra: hi
11:23 AM HighInBC: oh, today I learned
11:23 AM HighInBC: hi tpra
11:23 AM phipli: lots of USB things need a 12mhz clock at least
11:23 AM phipli: hi tpra
11:24 AM phipli: https://www.obdev.at/products/vusb/index.html
11:25 AM phipli: HighInBC : made one of these a while back https://www.obdev.at/products/vusb/prjdetail.php?pid=40
11:25 AM phipli: works well.
11:25 AM phipli: built a second one into a 128x64 GLCD
11:25 AM pcw_home: How on earth do they make those UCs so slow nowadays?
11:25 AM phipli: use it as a "nametag" at work
11:26 AM phipli: animated company logo and everything :)
11:26 AM phipli: pcw_home: because they're 20 years old really
11:26 AM HighInBC: ya I have a vusb attiny85 board that just runs some WS2812 leds - made it to all fit in this case: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/371779874298
11:26 AM phipli: nice use of the case
11:27 AM HighInBC: yes, I like to find very cheap things with cases I can re-use
11:27 AM phipli: always difficult to find cases for cheap
11:27 AM HighInBC: just copy the board size
11:27 AM phipli: lol
11:27 AM pcw_home: Yeah I can make a 200 MHz 16 bit CPU in current FPGA fabric so the same done in hardware should be atleast 400 MHz
11:27 AM phipli: as you say
11:27 AM HighInBC: programs over USB, makes pretty colours when powered
11:27 AM phipli: have you ever implemented a serial console over vusb?
11:28 AM HighInBC: no I have not, but I want to
11:28 AM phipli: that works with a standard console?
11:28 AM phipli: hum
11:28 AM phipli: I struggled to find something
11:28 AM HighInBC: I think it is possible but needs special drivers
11:28 AM phipli: the digisparks use a weird method
11:28 AM phipli: some people pass data through some HID packet system
11:28 AM HighInBC: they can't emulate the off the shelf usb serial, but they have done their own
11:29 AM HighInBC: you can get raw data with libusb
11:29 AM phipli: (similar to how keyboards know to turn the cap light on when another keyboard connected to the same system sends the capslock signal)
11:30 AM phipli: Drivers are a faff at work
11:30 AM HighInBC: hehe just type what you want to tell it by tapping the caps lock key with morse code
11:30 AM phipli: (external IT support)
11:30 AM phipli: so anything driverless is awesome
11:30 AM phipli: or, existing drivers in windows
11:31 AM phipli: the simplest solution is actually to just use RS232 :)
11:31 AM HighInBC: I think the problem is that existing rs232 drivers are all to high speed for the vusb
11:31 AM HighInBC: vusb is really slow for USB
11:31 AM phipli: our laptop docks have an RS232 port that is already set up and everything
11:32 AM phipli: interesting
11:32 AM phipli: that probably explains why I couldn't find what I was looking for
11:33 AM HighInBC: I started looking at this but have not got far: https://rayshobby.net/hid-class-usb-serial-communication-for-avrs-using-v-usb/
11:33 AM HighInBC: looks like they ahve it working reliably on linux but unreliably on windows
11:34 AM phipli: yes, I've seen that one
11:34 AM HighInBC: it is also relevant that vusb uses the timing signal at the start of a connection to align its own inaccurate timer. This means that as time passes it gets less and less in sync, it also gets out of sync if it gets warm
11:34 AM HighInBC: this is fine if you are just plugging it in and flashing it fast but not if it is going to remain in long term communication
11:35 AM HighInBC: this can be worked around by resetting your connection every so often, but not a great solution
11:35 AM phipli: Yeah, the usbasp built in setup
11:35 AM phipli: why not just an external clock?
11:35 AM HighInBC: why not just a MCU with native usb support?
11:36 AM phipli: $1 vs $5
11:36 AM HighInBC: true
11:36 AM phipli: my aim is to make nametags for my team
11:36 AM phipli: about 15 people
11:36 AM phipli: and it would be out of my own pocket
11:36 AM phipli: so...
11:36 AM phipli: 3 or 4 years later and I've not done it
11:37 AM HighInBC: and you want them to be able to edit them themselves?
11:37 AM phipli: because I've not made it cheap enough to even do a few people
11:37 AM HighInBC: otherwise just use an FTDI board and some pins to plug into
11:37 AM phipli: I was going to make a vbs script run at boot
11:37 AM phipli: that loaded the profile from the computer
11:37 AM phipli: so it worked whatever dock you plugged into
11:37 AM HighInBC: I see
11:38 AM HighInBC: esp8266 name tags would cost more, but they could shop real time twitter feeds... just saying
11:38 AM HighInBC: s/shop/show/
11:38 AM phipli: ran out of pins with the design I did do for that...
11:38 AM phipli: could re-visit
11:38 AM phipli: would be fine with a 1602 + shift reg or serial to parallel converter
11:39 AM phipli: but some 1602s don't run at 3.3v
11:39 AM phipli: and it is hit and miss whether they do or not
11:39 AM HighInBC: oh I thought you were using those tiny I2C based OLED displays
11:39 AM HighInBC: like this: https://www.sparkfun.com/products/9351 ?
11:40 AM HighInBC: oleds are great because they use tiny amounts of power
11:41 AM phipli: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/301884935685
11:41 AM phipli: hum
11:41 AM phipli: that is a lot more than I used to pay
11:41 AM phipli: but they were really cheap a couple of years ago
11:41 AM phipli: I was thinking them, or a 1602 because I can buy them for £1
11:42 AM phipli: until 30 seconds ago I thought I could still buy those tfts at £2
11:42 AM HighInBC: SPI, that does not need very many gpios
11:42 AM * phipli goes and pokes aliexpress
11:42 AM phipli: I forget what else I had wired up
11:42 AM phipli: but I ran out of GPIO on an ESP-12e
11:43 AM phipli: I'll re-check the schematic at some point
11:45 AM phipli: blimey. even on aliexpress those screens are now >£4
11:45 AM phipli: what happened! exchange rate or price increase?
11:47 AM HighInBC: I assume this will be battery powered. I like the http://www.ysksemi.com/Upload/file/ME6211Series_E4_0.pdf for my regulator for battery powered stuff as it can run and ESP8266 from a LIPO from full charge down to 3.1V(since the ESP can run off of as little as 3V) which is like 80% of the battery. The 1117 has a much higher dropout voltage
11:47 AM HighInBC: the ME6211 only has a 0.1V dropout
11:48 AM HighInBC: also if you make use of the chip enable pin it only uses 0.1uA on standby
11:50 AM phipli: on the DFN6L package?
11:50 AM phipli: are those pins under the component? can you work with them by hand, or a hot air gun?
11:52 AM HighInBC: this package is easier to solder but lacks an enable pin: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/252922092504
11:52 AM HighInBC: I agree the DFN6L is hard to work with
11:53 AM HighInBC: for a DFN6L I would use solder paste and a hot air gun, but the sot style can be done with an iron easy
12:26 PM IchGucksLive: hi
12:27 PM HighInBC: hi
12:27 PM IchGucksLive: HighInBC: how is the build going on
12:27 PM IchGucksLive: did you dicide to go fo a selfmade
12:32 PM HighInBC: well, I think I am going to get one of those 3040 frames with whatever black box controller they include
12:32 PM HighInBC: and will upgrade motors and controllers over the next year
12:32 PM IchGucksLive: up to you
12:33 PM HighInBC: The frame only is just a bit cheaper than with included electronics because shipping is so much, and it will be nice to be able to use it while making the controller
12:34 PM IchGucksLive: what is the bigest hardwarestore in your reatch
12:34 PM phipli: Also spares if something goes wrong one day
12:34 PM HighInBC: sadly I live on an island and our hardware stores mostly sell garden stuff
12:35 PM phipli: HighInBC: are you in Canada?
12:35 PM HighInBC: ya, Victoria
12:35 PM phipli: someone linked something in C$ earlier...
12:35 PM phipli: it was you then :)
12:36 PM phipli: We're lucky, we're in the EU this year and so can get things without paying extra tax from anywhere in the EU...
12:36 PM IchGucksLive: if postman reatches yopu 2times a week i woudt go as you got time for a selfmade
12:36 PM phipli: sadly some of my peers don't quite see it like that and so have decided to ruin that for me
12:37 PM HighInBC: this is why we can't have nice things as a species
12:37 PM IchGucksLive: imigration will connect CAnada with mexico soon
12:40 PM phipli: by drugs tunnel?
12:40 PM phipli: hell of a tunnel... If you need a train for the tunnel I can help?

12:41 PM phipli: HighInBC: thats basically what I have
12:41 PM HighInBC: I have been butchering printers since I was 8 to get at steppers
12:41 PM phipli: got double ended ones
12:41 PM phipli: for jog wheels

12:42 PM phipli: found it
12:42 PM phipli: 4A
12:43 PM HighInBC: I am not worried about replacing the controller/motors from whatever it comes with because I plan to repurpose them for a camera controller, want to setup a motion controlled animation stage
12:44 PM phipli: HighInBC: awesome
12:44 PM phipli: not done any stop motion in years
12:44 PM phipli: brother swears by the computer controlled camera rigs
12:44 PM phipli: when they need to re-shoot an advert, they can put everything back exactly in the same place
12:45 PM HighInBC: with computer controlled movements you can blend photos with matching camera movements in CGI
12:45 PM HighInBC: exactly

12:45 PM phipli: HighInBC: when you were taking printers to bits, I hope you saved the ground bar too :)
12:46 PM phipli: might not be perfect for this, but good ground bar is useful
12:46 PM HighInBC: I had to hide it all from my parents, they would throw it out as "junk"
12:46 PM phipli: heh
12:46 PM HighInBC: "stop bringing home junk" they would say
12:46 PM HighInBC: "Stepper motors are not JUNK" I would say
12:46 PM phipli: my dad is a worse than me at collecting things
12:47 PM phipli: there are pneumatic valves back home that have been in the shed longer than I've been alive
12:47 PM archivist: stupf is important!
12:47 PM HighInBC: they limited my "junk" collection to one milk crate
12:47 PM phipli: HighInBC: they limited my "junk" by having already filled the space with stuff
12:47 PM HighInBC: hehe
12:47 PM phipli: their shed is bigger than my house
12:47 PM phipli: and full of bits of... things
12:47 PM phipli: mostly car stuff
12:47 PM HighInBC: I wish I had more storage space where I am, next place I get is going to have out buildings

12:48 PM phipli: HighInBC: you're in Canada, can't you buy a forest or something?
12:48 PM HighInBC: why buy a forest? They are laying around for free
12:48 PM HighInBC: I have lots of outside space, but it gets rained on
12:48 PM phipli: Land here is... expensive
12:51 PM IchGucksLive: HighInBC: why is the shipment to canada that expensive
12:52 PM IchGucksLive: only view cnc destrebutors do free shipping
12:54 PM archivist: cnc log mill to build sheds
12:55 PM phipli: archivist: sounds like a plan
12:55 PM phipli: CNC version of the twin peaks credits
12:55 PM phipli: although those saw sharpeners are already cool
12:58 PM HighInBC: I am thinking about dust management. Something like a small tent to go around it so it is all contained
12:58 PM HighInBC: can use shop vac between runs
12:58 PM IchGucksLive: phipli: if you are eu use the DQ542ma
01:00 PM IchGucksLive: if you see all those Canada CNc watchlist you may think the whole world building cnc

01:01 PM IchGucksLive: all you need i a lathe setup
01:02 PM IchGucksLive: a E-chainsaw
01:02 PM phipli: you mean for aesthetic purposes?
01:02 PM phipli: or for building houses etc.?
01:02 PM HighInBC: just pushed the button, CNC ordered!
01:02 PM phipli: HighInBC: congratulations - now just the 1 month wait :)
01:02 PM HighInBC: yay!
01:03 PM HighInBC: go slow boat from China
01:03 PM phipli: :)
01:03 PM HighInBC: 1 month will give me time to finish my brew kettle
01:04 PM HighInBC: just got the last of the weld on ferrules, time to contact a tig welder
01:04 PM phipli: brew kettle?
01:04 PM IchGucksLive: dont blow yourself to heven until the cnc arivved
01:04 PM HighInBC: it will be a 50L 5500W kettle
01:04 PM phipli: for...
01:04 PM phipli: beer?
01:04 PM HighInBC: for making refreshing beverages
01:04 PM IchGucksLive: beer
01:04 PM the_wench: I am not your waitress!
01:05 PM HighInBC: lol
01:05 PM phipli: heh
01:05 PM phipli: I was going to make a bot
01:05 PM HighInBC: beer, but with a of modifications perhaps something a bit stronger
01:05 PM phipli: then I realised there are open source ones
01:05 PM phipli: that you can add features to easily
01:05 PM phipli: and I was sad
01:05 PM phipli: and then I didn't do anything
01:05 PM IchGucksLive: there comes harvey
01:06 PM IchGucksLive: peepsalot: waterlevel ?
01:06 PM phipli: so by kettle you mean still
01:06 PM phipli: mmmm PID controlled alcohol
01:07 PM HighInBC: well stills don't need PID because boiling will regulate temperature for you
01:07 PM HighInBC: you just need linear control as bursts of heat will mess up your separation
01:07 PM HighInBC: ie not an 100%/0% thermostat
01:07 PM phipli: I thought you wanted to regulate between 70 to 100
01:07 PM archivist: been using latent heat all day :)
01:07 PM phipli: to avoid boiling the water too much
01:07 PM HighInBC: any boiling liquid will stay at its boiling temperature regardless of its heat input
01:08 PM HighInBC: it is just how fast it boils that will change
01:08 PM HighInBC: and that is adjusted by watching how much comes out
01:08 PM phipli: HighInBC: but you don't /want/ to boil the water
01:08 PM HighInBC: a thermometer would not give any useful information
01:08 PM IchGucksLive: we did discuss today of 200acers of planting Malting barley
01:08 PM archivist: pressure changes the boiling point
01:08 PM HighInBC: if you don't boil, then nothing happens
01:08 PM HighInBC: archivist: not if it is an open system
01:09 PM archivist: try boiling water up a mountain
01:09 PM phipli: I swear something I read was regulating the temperature at the opening into the condenser
01:10 PM archivist: steam tables for the use of
01:10 PM IchGucksLive: not posible on Everest to boil water
01:10 PM phipli: IchGucksLive: easy to boil on Everest
01:10 PM phipli: boiling temp is lower
01:10 PM archivist: it boils at a lower temperature
01:10 PM phipli: even easier to boil water in space...
01:11 PM archivist: had half an hour at less than 15 psi today
01:11 PM phipli: on the engine?
01:11 PM archivist: yes
01:12 PM phipli: lots of arm waving exercise then :)
01:12 PM archivist: at 4:30 didnt think I would make it to 5pm
01:12 PM phipli: did they run out of coal, or just forget how to shovel?
01:12 PM archivist: latter methinks
01:13 PM phipli: you could do with something to redirect the water to a pipe over their heads
01:14 PM phipli: put a few hundred gallons of water over them when they're not pulling their weight :)
01:14 PM archivist: have to stop them talking to visitors
01:14 PM phipli: put them in a glass box
01:15 PM phipli: and label it "please do not tap on the glass, you will scare the fire crew"
01:15 PM archivist: with the engine we hear a problem and react, not the same in the boiler house
01:16 PM phipli: https://pics.me.me/observe-engineers-in-their-natural-habitat-please-do-not-tap-14586675.png
01:16 PM IchGucksLive: im off bye

01:17 PM * JT-Shop wanders inside for a nap after having the chicks crawl all over his arms and one taking a nap on my arm :)
01:17 PM phipli: you must be warm and comfortable :)
01:18 PM archivist: and/or covered in poop
01:43 PM CNCNewb: Can anyone here explain to me what a charge pump is and if it matters? I'm running a Gecko G540 and I have no charge pump pin set. All of my movements are off exactly 25% and I can't figure out why
01:44 PM archivist: off by 25% is a scale factor error
01:44 PM CNCNewb: Is that in the stepconf
01:44 PM CNCNewb: ?
01:44 PM archivist: charge pump is a safety device in the cnc world
01:45 PM archivist: number of steps per rev
01:45 PM CNCNewb: I'm set at 200 steps per revolution, which I think is correct
01:45 PM archivist: change that by 25% should be better then
01:46 PM CNCNewb: Is there any reason that should be the case? I'm looking at the motor specs and they say the step angle is 1.8
01:46 PM archivist: the motor is 200, but what is your driver set to and what is your screw pitch
01:47 PM CNCNewb: Screw pitch is 2mm
01:47 PM CNCNewb: Not sure about the driver
01:47 PM archivist: driver is probably set to n microsteps
01:47 PM CNCNewb: Do I change that on the hardware side or software side for the G540?
01:48 PM archivist: if the driver is set to 8 microsteps you have 8*200 steps per 2mm
01:49 PM CNCNewb: Yeah. I follow there. Trying to figure out where to change the microstepping in the configuration so everything is accurate
01:49 PM archivist: you read the driver manual, small amount of maths then reset your numbers in stepconf
01:50 PM CNCNewb: Working on that. The manual says nothing at all about microstepping
01:59 PM archivist: for the price that is a somewhat brief manual
02:03 PM archivist: hmm the driver morphs its microsteppong by itself
02:03 PM archivist: http://www.geckodrive.com/g250x-rev-2
02:04 PM archivist: also it claims 10 microstepes per full step in that last doc
02:05 PM archivist: so use 10*2*200 steps per 2mm
02:05 PM archivist: sorry 10*200 per 2mm
02:13 PM CNCNewb: So I just went and fiddled with some settings. And I have it set to 10 microsteps, and 50 steps per revolution, with the 2mm pitch
02:13 PM CNCNewb: and it seems right
02:21 PM JT-Shop: yea Gecko drives are mostly 10 microsteps except one IIRC
02:21 PM archivist: a bit silly that mariss misses that infor from the manual
02:33 PM JT-Shop: I've never read the G540 manual but it is in the G203v manual
02:34 PM JT-Shop: you can adjust the morphing point to get a very quiet stepper
02:54 PM CNCNewb: What do you mean by the morphing point? I'd love to quiet down my y axis motors
03:00 PM JT-Shop: on the 203v drive there is a pot you can adjust the morphing point. morphing means the output changes from 10 microsteps to full steps
03:10 PM CNCNewb: I believe I adjusted the pots as far as I can on my driver. It helped, but not a ton. Although the only volume issues I have are when I run the motors slow
03:14 PM phipli: doesn't changing that change your distance per step?
03:15 PM phipli: why would you have that on a pot?
03:15 PM malcom2073: Nope, it changes the point at which it switches to full steps for speed
03:15 PM phipli: ah right
03:15 PM malcom2073: one step pulse is still 1/10th step, but beyond a certain speed, it doesn't bother with microsteps internally or something
03:16 PM pcw_home: Right, it changes from sine wave drive to square wave but thats it, Its always 2000 steps/turn
03:26 PM JT-Shop: phipli: how are the new ones getting along?
03:38 PM Motioncontrol: Hi at all. the site for git resourse is close ? i don't can connect at it.
03:39 PM Tom_L: it moved
03:40 PM Tom_L: github.com/linuxcnc
03:40 PM Motioncontrol: ok thanks
03:44 PM phipli: JT-Shop: they were getting better, today on of the older ones was being rough with them again

03:54 PM Tom_L: should do the trick
03:57 PM phipli: JT-Shop: yeah, it is a real shame - it is even making them nervous of us
03:57 PM phipli: they're not going to be as good with us as the older ones were I suspect.

05:07 PM JT-Shop: if you could put her in a dog carrier she would be protected but still in sight of the other hens...
05:09 PM JT-Shop: I'm writing a little sketch to simulate sunrise so they can ease into full nights sleep

05:10 PM Tom_L: got a triac to drive it?
05:11 PM TurBoss: https://github.com/TurBoss/birdKeeper

05:12 PM TurBoss: it uses a teensy 3.2 with rtc
05:12 PM TurBoss: and drives 12v led strips
05:13 PM TurBoss: it has a lcd display to configure timmers
05:26 PM JT-Shop: I have a 4 up relay for the ardweenie so I'm using 4 different watt bulbs
05:26 PM JT-Shop: easy, fast, cheap
05:27 PM Tom_L: cool
05:27 PM JT-Shop: cool thing if I had a led big enough
05:28 PM Tom_L: probably too directed
05:29 PM Tom_L: unless you difused it a bit
05:29 PM JT-Shop: a led?
05:30 PM Tom_L: get a super cap and some leds. charge the supercap a couple hrs before bedtime and calculate the current draw so it drains gradually until out

05:41 PM Tom_L: sounds like a plan then
05:42 PM JT-Shop: modifying the brooder for front load instead of top load made a huge difference in the chicks taking a fancy to me
05:43 PM Tom_L: yeah, no big monster is looming over their head now :)
05:46 PM phipli: The nervous one has taken a shine to mealworms
05:47 PM phipli: so I have the weapon to erode her fear of me now
05:47 PM Tom_L: hah
05:47 PM phipli: (just to clarify, I /am/ talking about a chicken...)
05:47 PM phipli: (just thought I'd avoid any confusion)
05:51 PM JT-Shop: yea this bunch loves toasted mealworms, took a long time to get the last bunch to eat them
05:51 PM JT-Shop: I think the brooder modifications were a huge difference
06:00 PM phipli: meal worms are good for them when they're growing
06:00 PM phipli: they need the protein

06:36 PM BeachBumPete: Jeez man I managed to snap off my double ended 3/16 EM on a prototype part I am working on but thankfully I was able to stick the stub in the collet and still have enough length to finish cutting the part.
06:44 PM Roguish: BeachBumPete: yeah, yesterday i broke a 1.47mm carbide drill bit, another $15 down the drain....... oh well, cost of doing business.
06:44 PM Roguish: finished the next part with the spare.
06:45 PM BeachBumPete: LOL I had no spare
06:52 PM BeachBumPete: Gotta order some new 3 flute carbides from maritool I guess...
06:53 PM XXCoder: I'm wondering a bit
06:54 PM XXCoder: is there such thing as local machining retail?
06:55 PM Roguish: certainly not on Sundays
07:35 PM CaptHindsight: is this still the way to have LCNC open maximized? https://forum.linuxcnc.org/forum/21-axis/29735-axis-modifications
07:36 PM CaptHindsight: use devilspie or is that only for Ubuntu?
08:41 PM Jymmm: CaptHindsight: Those look like tK commands, so I'd think it be generic across the board, but you might look for a tK MAXIMIZE command

09:25 PM Tom_L: a real spindle would do alot better
09:25 PM Tom_L: dunno how i'm gonna simulate the changer parts
09:25 PM BeachBumPete: my brother came over with his wife today and we were talking about my CNC lathe build and I showed him the electronics board and he was like HOLY SMOKES LOL
09:26 PM Tom_L: i can't keep track of mine
09:26 PM Tom_L: it seems to change quite a bit
09:26 PM Tom_L: i think it's finally settled a bit now though
09:26 PM BeachBumPete: he just bought this nice older walking foot heavy duty commercial sewing machine as he fancies himself making custom car and boat upholstery
09:27 PM Tom_L: nice
09:27 PM BeachBumPete: but the one he bought has some kinda clutched motor and people are putting servo motors on them
09:27 PM BeachBumPete: he showed me this $700 retrofit to a variable speed motor controller for it
09:28 PM BeachBumPete: turns out it is just a nice bracket, a cheapass low powered DC motor and a little box with DC motor speed control in it and a foot reostat
09:28 PM BeachBumPete: I showed him how he might be able to build the same damn thing with an old treadmill parts LOL
09:28 PM Tom_L: a guy here got one of those to convert to a spindle
09:28 PM BeachBumPete: He got all excited about it
09:28 PM BeachBumPete: I actually did that once
09:28 PM Tom_L: i think he blew up the control
09:29 PM BeachBumPete: I used to have one of those 3 in 1 Shoptaks machines
09:29 PM BeachBumPete: it comes with a 3/4 hp chinese spindle motor
09:29 PM BeachBumPete: I swapped out for a treadmill motor and controller and it worked quite well
09:29 PM BeachBumPete: nice to have infinitely variable speed and a lot higher RPM
09:29 PM BeachBumPete: BRB
09:31 PM BeachBumPete: had to check on the VMC
09:31 PM BeachBumPete: but yeah it worked great and had good torque with the right pullies
09:31 PM Tom_L: wife didn't bang on the back of it again did she?
09:31 PM BeachBumPete: hehehe no she is already asleep
09:32 PM BeachBumPete: I like to do a lot of machining after everyone goes to bed
09:34 PM Tom_L: doesn't keep em awake?
09:34 PM BeachBumPete: no not really
09:34 PM BeachBumPete: its relatively quiet unless I really screw something up hehe
09:55 PM BeachBumPete: http://i.imgur.com/t9F7TFg.jpg Almost finished :)
09:58 PM Tom_L: you had to move those slots down, was that the issue?
10:00 PM BeachBumPete: well yeah before I brought it into 2D CAD in fusion 360 I was unable to move them down but once I pulled the plug on it I did it my old way got it where I wanted it.
10:01 PM Tom_L: pretty sure catia would do that easy
10:01 PM Tom_L: the top edge looks rather sharp
10:01 PM BeachBumPete: well like I said I am sure Fusion would as well if I knew WHY it was not allowing me to move them
10:02 PM BeachBumPete: yeah its supposed to be interrupted like that
10:02 PM BeachBumPete: that is RIGHT off the machine not even deburred yet
10:02 PM Tom_L: i figured
10:02 PM BeachBumPete: I still have to machine the bottom dovetail slot and I also have to install a scope stop pin setup in it.
10:03 PM BeachBumPete: do you think it looks okay?
10:04 PM Tom_L: looks fine to me but i don't know anything about those guns
10:04 PM Tom_L: how many positions was that?
10:05 PM BeachBumPete: you mean setups?
10:05 PM Tom_L: yeah
10:05 PM BeachBumPete: 3 so far
10:05 PM BeachBumPete: will be four once I cut the bottom
10:05 PM BeachBumPete: I wish there was a way to do less but it is what it is
10:05 PM Tom_L: what's the backside look like? is it symetrical?
10:06 PM BeachBumPete: spent most of the day working on the programs for this part it is quite a bit shorter in height and length than most of the others I make
10:06 PM BeachBumPete: what do you mean backside?
10:06 PM Tom_L: the side against your hand in the pic
10:06 PM Tom_L: or is it flat to bolt onto something
10:06 PM BeachBumPete: oh yeah its basically identical except it does not have the champfered holes for the screw heads
10:07 PM Tom_L: ok
10:07 PM BeachBumPete: just six holes out the other side that get tapped
10:07 PM BeachBumPete: this one is only just over an inch tall
10:07 PM BeachBumPete: about a bit over 8" long
10:09 PM Tom_L: my bud had to change the spindle drive in his recently
10:09 PM Tom_L: $1400 exchange
10:10 PM BeachBumPete: that is not too bad really
10:10 PM Tom_L: no not really
10:10 PM BeachBumPete: the one in my original control was stupid money
10:10 PM Tom_L: the machine is getting quite old now
10:10 PM Tom_L: he bought it new
10:10 PM BeachBumPete: mine is a 97
10:10 PM Tom_L: i dunno what year his is
10:10 PM Tom_L: it's a tree
10:11 PM Tom_L: he had to replace one of the X screw end bearings before that
10:11 PM Tom_L: the Y is going out now, you can really hear it
10:11 PM Tom_L: those are as bad as the spindle drive
10:12 PM BeachBumPete: from what I gather the ones in my machine are not too bad really
10:12 PM BeachBumPete: I really need to get some new coolant tho
10:12 PM Tom_L: iirc he found one on ebay for 700
10:12 PM BeachBumPete: damn stuff is looking kinda skunky
10:12 PM Tom_L: for one bearing
10:14 PM Tom_L: dealer was $1400
10:14 PM BeachBumPete: ouch
10:14 PM Tom_L: iirc it's about a 3" screw
10:14 PM BeachBumPete: is that a big machine?
10:15 PM Tom_L: 6040? maybe
10:15 PM Tom_L: i don't remember
10:15 PM BeachBumPete: nice
10:15 PM Tom_L: it's not that small
10:15 PM Tom_L: but not as big as some he had
10:15 PM Tom_L: actually looked small compared to them
10:15 PM Tom_L: he had an okuma with a dual pallet changer
10:15 PM Tom_L: 99 tool change in the back
10:16 PM Tom_L: he ran those Ti landing gear struts on it for a while
10:20 PM BeachBumPete: sounds like a good job
10:20 PM Tom_L: it was 50 taper
10:21 PM Tom_L: he built them from the beginning. first 6 articles were from billet
10:21 PM Tom_L: they tried to use exhisting forgings but they were too weak
10:22 PM Tom_L: so they had to make new forgings for this one and had to test first
10:22 PM Tom_L: so he had to make them from solid block
10:22 PM BeachBumPete: man I so need to find some good jobs like that
10:22 PM Tom_L: those ran day and night for a week or two per article
10:22 PM BeachBumPete: I love making these airgun parts but it is not exactly a cash cow LOL
10:23 PM Tom_L: not a cheap part
10:23 PM Tom_L: citation 10 iirc
10:23 PM BeachBumPete: oh it was not a govt job then?
10:23 PM Tom_L: no
10:24 PM Tom_L: all he did was aircraft parts
10:24 PM Tom_L: we did some early on for jpats though
10:24 PM Tom_L: even though they didn't win the bid it was a better plane for the purpose
10:25 PM BeachBumPete: I wish I could find some custom parts to make that would force me out of my day job LOL
10:25 PM Tom_L: they wound up using a prop plane for a jet trainer
10:26 PM Tom_L: what about your car buds?
10:26 PM Tom_L: didn't you have some down there?
10:27 PM BeachBumPete: well honestly no not so far
10:27 PM Tom_L: is nasa anywhere nearby?
10:27 PM BeachBumPete: the guys I worked for in Tennessee seem to have found other shops to make thier parts
10:27 PM BeachBumPete: LOL yeah about an hour north
10:27 PM Tom_L: get in with them
10:28 PM BeachBumPete: WOULD LOVE TO
10:28 PM Tom_L: most of their junk is composite now though
10:28 PM BeachBumPete: would not know where to start
10:28 PM Tom_L: probably not alot of production work there
10:29 PM BeachBumPete: I suppose so
10:29 PM hazzy2 is now known as hazzy
10:30 PM Tom_L: we're pretty lucky here
10:30 PM Tom_L: this town's full of aircraft plants
10:30 PM Tom_L: although their parking lots are quite empty anymore
10:30 PM Tom_L: i remember a day they were jam packed day and night
10:32 PM Tom_L: there's plenty of small shops around though
10:34 PM BeachBumPete: I have been trying to get with the boat building guys here but have been working so much at the day job it is hard to find time to get with them during their work days
10:36 PM BeachBumPete: well better get to bed work in the morning. Take it easy Tom
