12:08 AM minibnz: i did contemplate that and all sorts of combos..
12:11 AM minibnz: gtg need vacuum fitting before the shop shuts..
12:11 AM minibnz: later
12:55 AM enleth: have you ever heard of anyone using LinuxCNC on a 6R robot with an external rotary table? basically a 7 axis system with 6 axes in series and the 7th "in parallel" to the 1st
12:56 AM HighInBC: woah
12:57 AM enleth: for starters, GENSER_MAX_JOINTS is 6
01:04 AM gloops: no, im only just starting to look at 2 motors on 1 axis
01:06 AM enleth: starters aside, the code appears to assume the axes are strictly in series
01:07 AM enleth: so the answer to my question is probably a solid "no" unless someone wrote a custom kinematics component
02:29 AM archivist: where is the 7th, sounds a bit like that is in series too
02:32 AM Deejay: moin
02:41 AM SpeedEvil: more than six axes could be complex - has nobody ever read 'the number of the beast' ?
02:41 AM XXCoder: 666
03:17 AM TurBoss: wasn't 555 ?
03:21 AM archivist: that was a tobacco brand
03:21 AM TurBoss: a cigar can act as timer
03:37 AM XXCoder: whats ciger +- tol on timing? heh
03:37 AM XXCoder: bah he left
03:38 AM XXCoder: TurBoss[m]:
03:41 AM archivist: 555 is a timer chip
03:44 AM XXCoder: 555 is two timing chip
03:45 AM archivist: nah that is a 556
03:45 AM XXCoder: oh thats right
05:41 AM gloops: so whats the difference between the ini file and the hal file?
05:50 AM miss0r2: gloops: http://linuxcnc.org/docs/2.4/html/config_ini_config.html
05:51 AM miss0r2: Damn this epoxy granite is some messy stuff
05:52 AM XXCoder: as long as you dont make yourself allegric to epoxy its fine
05:56 AM miss0r2: I use gloves and have the place well ventilated
05:56 AM XXCoder: thats good :)
06:01 AM miss0r2: It is gonna be one sweet mini cnc lathe thou
06:01 AM miss0r2: Atleast, I hope it will
06:01 AM XXCoder: :0
06:01 AM XXCoder: :)
06:07 AM jthornton: morning
06:07 AM phipli: g'day
06:11 AM jthornton: what's up today?
06:11 AM XXCoder: tired heh
06:11 AM jthornton: damn I'm eaten up with chigger bites
06:12 AM phipli: painting today I think
06:12 AM phipli: jthornton: nipping you?
06:12 AM XXCoder: driving 2 hours to vancouver, sleeping badly at neice's couch, going to event with nephew, out all day, nap a hour then driving back for 2 hours'd do that to you also
06:12 AM phipli: our new ones are still terrors for pinching
06:12 AM jthornton: not chickens, chiggers
06:13 AM gloops: well my experiment with cycle chain drive has shown some pretty positive results so far, x is single strand strand chain with sprockets pulling axis along, y is endless chain with axis attached, the y is showing virtually no backlash, in fact both axis are showing .05mm or less
06:13 AM phipli: I have no idea what a chigger is
06:13 AM XXCoder: glad chiggers cant live where I live here
06:13 AM XXCoder: phipli: it bits then turns around and poops where it bit
06:13 AM XXCoder: guess where it likes to bite
06:13 AM phipli: some kind of mite
06:14 AM phipli: k
06:14 AM XXCoder: not really a mite?
06:14 AM phipli: internet says they are
06:14 AM XXCoder: ah so they are.
06:15 AM XXCoder: guess I misremembered a bit
06:15 AM XXCoder: jthornton: how do yoyu get rid of em
06:15 AM jthornton: snow
06:15 AM phipli: heh
06:15 AM XXCoder: igloo it is then
06:15 AM XXCoder: with ice bed with snow as blanket
06:16 AM jthornton: I've built igloos in the past
06:16 AM XXCoder: it never snows enough for that here lol
06:16 AM XXCoder: "holy crap" snow is 6 inches tall
06:16 AM phipli: ah right
06:16 AM phipli: our harvest mite is one
06:16 AM XXCoder: so far record I have seen is over a foot, and that was long time ago
06:17 AM phipli: hum
06:17 AM phipli: I've never been bitten by a harvest mite - ours must be less interested in human flesh
06:18 AM phipli: they're bright red...
06:18 AM phipli: used to poke them on walls as a slightly mean kid
06:18 AM jthornton: chiggers are so small you can't see them
06:19 AM phipli: these things are our closest thing (same family and some people call them "chiggers")
06:19 AM phipli: they're less than 1mm across
06:19 AM phipli: tiny, but so brightly coloured that you see them
06:20 AM phipli: and the internet says they do bite people... can't remember been bothered by it
06:20 AM phipli: midges (tiny flies that live near water) were my main issue
06:20 AM phipli: sometimes horseflies or ants
06:21 AM jthornton: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N2WG23X/ref=ox_sc_act_title_6?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1
06:21 AM jthornton: thinking of this mb for my camera server
06:21 AM phipli: no parallel port though...
06:21 AM phipli: :)
06:21 AM jthornton: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LY154MY/ref=ox_sc_act_title_5?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1
06:22 AM jthornton: going to try a M.2 SSD
06:22 AM phipli: are gigabyte better with linux these days?
06:22 AM phipli: M.2 is AWESOME
06:22 AM phipli: I have one in my new tower
06:22 AM jthornton: I have a few gigabyte
06:22 AM jthornton: s
06:22 AM phipli: something stupid like 1GB/s transfer rates
06:22 AM phipli: and not too expensive
06:23 AM jthornton: going to pair it with this for storage https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B013HNYVLA/ref=ox_sc_act_title_4?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1
06:23 AM jthornton: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MUGQFB3/ref=ox_sc_act_title_7?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1
06:23 AM jthornton: going as far as i5 for processor
06:23 AM phipli: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/samsung-sm961-ssd-256gb-512gb,review-33601.html
06:23 AM phipli: I got one of those
06:23 AM phipli: they're really cheap because they're OEM
06:27 AM phipli: ah, the 960 pro has come out since
06:30 AM phipli: right
06:30 AM phipli: cup of tea finished
06:30 AM phipli: should go and be useful
06:31 AM * jthornton tries to find the chicken link from yesterday
06:51 AM miss0r2: You know the feeling, when pouring epoxy granite, and one of your seals fails and it is everywhere? !!
07:07 AM tpra: hi
07:10 AM enleth: archivist: well, yes and no
07:10 AM enleth: archivist: you could say it's in series and in effect have the robot's base rotate around the table from the point of view of the world coordinate system
07:14 AM enleth: archivist: problem is, with a robot, you really need to separate the concepts of world and workpiece coordinates, either by providing separate DH definitions for the effector and the workpiece, or by assuming that the world is in fact anchored to an intermediate joint
07:15 AM enleth: same thing really
07:17 AM enleth: what the separation is needed for is cell configuration
07:17 AM * SpeedEvil prefers the world when anchored by a massive joint.
07:18 AM enleth: with a robot big enough to reach the ceiling and powerful enough to plausibly cause structural damage to both itself *and* the ceiling on collision, it kind of becomes necessary to define additional limits in terms of the actual world coordinates
07:18 AM SpeedEvil: 'To infinity and beyond!' (poking out of the roof)
07:19 AM SpeedEvil: miss0r2: what've you been doing - sounds fun.
07:19 AM enleth: more like the floor at the neighbour's, unfortunately
07:46 AM miss0r2: SpeedEvil: I'm doing the first test castings with epoxy granite, in preperation for my small cnc lathe project
07:46 AM miss0r2: small = micro lathe. only with 100mm z travel.
08:07 AM SpeedEvil: :)
08:19 AM miss0r2: I need to figure out how to make packing this mixture easier...
08:19 AM miss0r2: The vibration system does not work as well as intented.
08:22 AM miss0r2: The idea to vibrate it into place like you do with concrete, does not work as well here, as the resin has a somewhat higher (Visvusity?) than water
08:23 AM tpra: do you need to vibrate a big volume ? if not vacuum may be an option
08:24 AM tpra: tough it's not vibrating, it's a very nice "de-bubble-ing" method
08:24 AM miss0r2: how do you define 'big volume' ? :)
08:25 AM sync_: you can vibrate bubbles out of viscous resin
08:25 AM miss0r2: Yeah, i'm going to use a vacuum for removing trapped air, but, I want to have it set properly in all the shapes of the form. and preferably sit as level as possible on the cast surface
08:26 AM miss0r2: the cast amounts to 7.5liters
08:26 AM tpra: big enough so you can't put it in container that allows you to vacuum debubbling it
08:26 AM tpra: ho i didn't thought about the "go everywhere" part :) so vibrating is needed
08:27 AM miss0r2: good thing I did something I typically wouldn't do - I made a scaled down test first. The problem is, it leaves me with more questions than answers :D
08:31 AM tpra: ^^
08:32 AM Tom_L: you don't really need a container if you can plastic bag it
08:32 AM miss0r2: As this is a mixture of small (1-2mm) and larger (8-12mm) granite stones, i'm worries I will end up with a larger stone blocking a corner, only allowing resin to flow to that part, and not the stones ect.
08:33 AM sync_: more vibration
08:33 AM sync_: you also need to get the particle size right
08:34 AM sync_: otherwise you could just use epoxy alone
08:34 AM malcom2073: Get yourself a floor sander, and attach it to your mould
08:34 AM malcom2073: That'll vibrate the hell out of it :)
08:34 AM miss0r2: malcom2073: That is what I did, and it seemed to do very little to be honnest.
08:35 AM miss0r2: well, not exactly a floor sander. but a handheld vibration sander. And this was only a 0.5liter test
08:35 AM sync_: well, you have time, set the resin up for 24h or longer and vibrate
08:35 AM sync_: but a vibration sander is insufficient
08:36 AM miss0r2: sadly, the epoxy i've landed only takes 15-20 minuts to harden
08:36 AM sync_: then you will not be able to do what you want to do
08:38 AM miss0r2: Hmm. I should see if I can get another hardener then. I've bought the West 105 resin with the 206 hardener (The only stuff in quantity I could find locally)
08:40 AM miss0r2: Also, I managed to vibrate out one of the bolts locking a threadplug inside the test mold. That released the schmoo !
08:43 AM sync_: have you got the proper particle size distribution filler?
08:43 AM sync_: because that really helps the deairing as well
08:45 AM miss0r2: I don't know about proper... I just winged it :]
08:46 AM sync_: did you do any research at all on how to do epoxy granite?
08:46 AM miss0r2: I did. :] I read this http://www.cnccookbook.com/CCMillEpoxyFill.htm
08:47 AM sync_: that is not sufficient research
08:47 AM miss0r2: But not the most thurough research
08:47 AM miss0r2: I miss being a kid in the sandbox... You just did stuff
08:50 AM sync_: 1h in the library can usually save 10h in the lab
08:52 AM miss0r2: Lucky for me. I enjoy the 10 hours of lab time :] This is my family free zone
08:53 AM miss0r2: Sadly, I can't seem to find any definitive recipies for what I need.
08:54 AM malcom2073: sync_: You mean 10h in the lab can save 1h in the library ;)
08:54 AM sync_: not really
08:54 AM malcom2073: It's on my dream list to build an epoxy granite VMC, don't think I'll ever do it though
08:54 AM sync_: or well, yes
08:54 AM sync_: but usually it takes longer than 10h
08:54 AM sync_: why not
08:55 AM CaptHindsight: use small particles for you 100mm lathe
08:55 AM malcom2073: Too many other things in the queue
08:55 AM malcom2073: And auction block VMCs are super cheap around here, I'll likely buy one first hehe
08:56 AM miss0r2: CaptHindsight: Would you use the 1-2mm ones only ?
08:56 AM CaptHindsight: <5mm particles, mostly sand
08:56 AM CaptHindsight: for small parts, yes
08:56 AM CaptHindsight: I also have the luxury of making my own resin
08:57 AM miss0r2: ^^
08:57 AM CaptHindsight: miss0r2: where are you located?
08:57 AM miss0r2: CaptHindsight: Denmark
08:58 AM CaptHindsight: what is the ratio for the West resin?
08:58 AM miss0r2: 1:5
08:59 AM miss0r2: or 5:1 however you like it
08:59 AM CaptHindsight: ah then you can use less hardener if it cures too quickly
08:59 AM CaptHindsight: it will still fully cure, only slower
09:00 AM CaptHindsight: I need to start selling resins for polymer granite
09:01 AM CaptHindsight: or label them as such
09:01 AM miss0r2: I will be your firest client, then :) if it comes with a recepie for the stone sizes'n proportions
09:02 AM CaptHindsight: whats the viscosity of the West 105 after mixing the two parts?
09:02 AM miss0r2: in laymen terms or would you like me to look it up ?
09:03 AM CaptHindsight: milk, olive oil, maple syrup on a cold day, butter out of the fridge?
09:03 AM miss0r2: Its a little thicker than dishwashing soap
09:03 AM CaptHindsight: if you heat it to 50C it will get much thinner
09:04 AM CaptHindsight: did you see MEKP in the hardener SDS?
09:04 AM miss0r2: Won't that endanger the cast to overheat once it starts curing
09:04 AM miss0r2: that looks like random letters to me. looking it up
09:05 AM CaptHindsight: the easiest way for you starting out is to use a vacuum bag
09:06 AM miss0r2: The casting mold i've designed, is build with a lid I can screw on, that accepts a vacuum hose
09:06 AM CaptHindsight: ~10% resin to 90% aggregate
09:07 AM miss0r2: by weight
09:07 AM miss0r2: ?
09:07 AM CaptHindsight: did you say West 105?
09:07 AM miss0r2: yes
09:07 AM CaptHindsight: volume
09:07 AM CaptHindsight: the resin has a density of ~1Kg/L
09:07 AM CaptHindsight: rocks are much higher
09:07 AM miss0r2: I can look up that number
09:08 AM CaptHindsight: reading the sds
09:08 AM miss0r2: SDS?
09:08 AM CaptHindsight: 1000 centipoise (cp) at 72 F (22C),
09:09 AM CaptHindsight: use the 209 extra slow hardener
09:09 AM CaptHindsight: if you can get it
09:09 AM miss0r2: I can't. I couldn't even the the 206.
09:10 AM miss0r2: I have 205
09:10 AM CaptHindsight: http://www.westsystem.com/wp-content/uploads/105-Resin-EN-OSHA-WHMIS.pdf
09:11 AM CaptHindsight: crap you have the fastest one
09:11 AM miss0r2: Indeed I do
09:13 AM CaptHindsight: heh, they use about the cheapest components to make that
09:13 AM miss0r2: That makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside... The stuff was expensive enough
09:13 AM CaptHindsight: yet the marketing makes it sound like it's gods gift to resins
09:13 AM CaptHindsight: how much per Liter?
09:14 AM miss0r2: I payed almost 280USD for a 6kg set
09:14 AM miss0r2: around 40usd/liter for the resin
09:16 AM CaptHindsight: I don't know if the sell polyester resin where you are...
09:16 AM CaptHindsight: but it's ~$40/3.75L here
09:16 AM miss0r2: hehe. The thought of heating the resin to 50C in the oven just hit me. I am pretty sure the wife would kill me :]
09:16 AM miss0r2: Now, that sounds like a bargin
09:17 AM miss0r2: I'm sure I can find all the right stuff - but as always with me, I dive in head first, not thinking before I land
09:17 AM CaptHindsight: https://jet.com/product/detail/3e10bdccd6ba4d75bb320134ae274001
09:18 AM miss0r2: The product isn't loading
09:19 AM CaptHindsight: your epoxy is a tougher but it won't be much different with it being 90% aggregate
09:19 AM miss0r2: Not to dismiss your other product there: but can I make it work with what i've got? i.e. using less hardener to give me more time for setting it right?
09:20 AM CaptHindsight: slightly less
09:20 AM miss0r2: so, cutting the hardener in half is a bad idea? :]
09:20 AM CaptHindsight: like 4.5:1 vs 5:1
09:21 AM CaptHindsight: try some tests using a few mL
09:21 AM CaptHindsight: can you get syringes there without needles?
09:21 AM miss0r2: sure
09:21 AM CaptHindsight: 10mL syringe
09:21 AM CaptHindsight: then you can easily measure
09:22 AM miss0r2: Yeah. Now i'm sad I opted for the pumpset for the resin and hardener
09:22 AM CaptHindsight: bbl
09:22 AM miss0r2: I'll catch you another day. Thanks for the input. (family duty)
09:23 AM CaptHindsight: the EU might have banned styrene
09:24 AM CaptHindsight: so polyester resin might not be available there
09:25 AM CaptHindsight: https://echa.europa.eu/substance-information/-/substanceinfo/100.002.592
09:26 AM CaptHindsight: https://www.poliya.com/en/products/polipol_polyester/
09:33 AM CaptHindsight: miss0r2: if you're stuck with that epoxy then try 4.8:1, 4.7L1 etc to slow it plus putting the aggregate in the freezer before mixing it with the resin
09:34 AM CaptHindsight: cooling will slow the polymerization
09:34 AM sync_: http://www.hfmarine.dk/368/west-system-epoxy
09:34 AM CaptHindsight: but it will also increase the viscosity of the resin
09:36 AM sync_: you can get PE resins here
09:37 AM gloops: whats the resin for?
09:37 AM CaptHindsight: resin aggregate machine base
09:37 AM CaptHindsight: gluing rocks and sand together to make a machine base
09:38 AM gloops: so use a filler in the resin - machine it flat?
09:38 AM CaptHindsight: his issues is bubbles
09:39 AM CaptHindsight: well machining rocks flat is an issue
09:39 AM gloops: you will get some bubbles as it is an open cast, any moisture in the filler will cause masses of bubbles though
09:39 AM sync_: the fastest way is to cast in machined steel or to cast from a surface plate
09:40 AM CaptHindsight: and we didn't get into if he has his linear bearing cast in the epoxy/granite or not
09:40 AM gloops: you need a vacuum to ensure bubble free
09:40 AM CaptHindsight: he's also using a fast epoxy
09:40 AM sync_: I had good results with vibration and dry aggregate
09:40 AM CaptHindsight: so he's in a corner already
09:41 AM CaptHindsight: trying to make the best of it
09:42 AM gloops: yeah you can work without a vac of course and get good results, if youre talking about the odd bubble though then vac is how to go
09:42 AM CaptHindsight: how to get the average maker type to be able to cast epoxy granite square and level is the bigger problem
09:43 AM gloops: well you got a problem
09:43 AM CaptHindsight: heh
09:44 AM gloops: the filler will reduce the viscosity of the resin - which otherwise would be pretty self levelling
09:44 AM gloops: or should i say increase the viscosity
09:44 AM CaptHindsight: filler will raise the viscosity
09:45 AM CaptHindsight: heating will lower it
09:45 AM gloops: right, so why not do an 80% layer with filler, then finish with neat resin to get flat
09:45 AM CaptHindsight: but heat will also speed up the polymerization
09:45 AM CaptHindsight: but...
09:46 AM gloops: well the set time can be controlled with the amount of catalyst
09:46 AM CaptHindsight: if you embed the linear bearing into the resin ...
09:47 AM gloops: if the wife is out shopping id tell her to pick 24 cans up
09:47 AM CaptHindsight: then the bearing needs to be square to the bottom of the form
09:48 AM gloops: oh i thought you meant he'd stuck the bearing up with resin
09:48 AM gloops: by accident
09:48 AM CaptHindsight: or do you cast the epoxy granite base and embed metal pilings into the form to later machine threaded holes to mount the bearing to?
09:51 AM CaptHindsight: I'd like to see a dampening plot of epoxy vs polyester resin vs PVA granite machine base
09:52 AM CaptHindsight: how much does the polymer matter? Since it's 90% aggregate
09:54 AM CaptHindsight: there is a paper by someone at MIT that combined the epoxy granite with steel tubes to get optimal results
09:55 AM CaptHindsight: he has a paper with lots of test results showing the dampening while the machines are running
09:57 AM gloops: you mean filling the tubes?
09:57 AM CaptHindsight: tubes cast within
09:57 AM gloops: seen a few talk about that, im a bit skeptical about using epoxy, its basically the added weight thats doing the dampening
09:59 AM CaptHindsight: plus epoxy is a pretty broad term
09:59 AM CaptHindsight: can vary widely in flexibilty and hardness
10:00 AM gloops: how big a bed are we talking about here?
10:02 AM gloops: i have used resins for various things, not for machine beds though, usually the reason for using resins is to reduce weight, the meshes like glass fibre and carbon fibre give strength and lightness
10:03 AM CaptHindsight: bbl
11:11 AM IchGucksLive: hi
11:16 AM IchGucksLive: til later
11:46 AM phipli: jthornton: still up?
11:47 AM * phipli tries to work out the time in America...
11:47 AM phipli: ~5 hours... which way... it is morning isn't it?
11:47 AM phipli: lol. I fail
11:48 AM phipli: about midday
11:51 AM Nick-Shop: 12:20 right now in eastern time zone - should be the same for JT
11:53 AM phipli: I confuse myself because sometimes I work with west coast canadians
11:53 AM phipli: forget that they're not east coast
11:53 AM phipli: makes a difference
11:54 AM phipli: basically they come online as we end our working day
11:55 AM Nick-Shop: add 3 hrs to my time for west coast
11:56 AM Nick-Shop: lunch time - be back
11:57 AM phipli: enjoy :)
11:58 AM JT-Shop: I'm in the Central time zone
11:58 AM phipli: so -6?
11:58 AM JT-Shop: aye
11:58 AM * phipli makes a mental note
11:59 AM phipli: only time I've ever dealt with my american colleagues they confused me by asking a question about something in Orange County...
12:00 PM phipli: and "which one" ended up a problem
12:00 PM phipli: google gave me New York first, despite the California one being more famous (and the one they meant)
12:08 PM JT-Shop: yea I didn't even know ny had an orange county till I watched some motorcycle show on tv
12:10 PM phipli: JT-Shop: http://gallery.elephantandchicken.co.uk/#!album-3
12:11 PM phipli: The two young ones are growing quickly
12:11 PM phipli: still not grown proper combs or started laying though
12:11 PM phipli: the white one is very nervous, but getting to be huge
12:11 PM phipli: difficult to get a picture though because she's so white it gives my phone's camera trouble
12:12 PM JT-Shop: I'll have a look in the morning, wife used up a bunch of bandwidth lol only have a tiny bit left for the rest of the month
12:12 PM phipli: np
12:12 PM phipli: :)
12:12 PM phipli: I'll re-send if you need me to - just remind me
12:13 PM JT-Shop: and I was about to get on the even break level... so much for that
12:13 PM phipli: 11 days left in the month though!
12:13 PM phipli: good thing irc doesn't use much bandwidth
12:14 PM JT-Shop: I did find my key span usb to serial adapter and was able to communicate with the PLC so now I don't have to buy the $400 software upgrade :)
12:17 PM phipli: it isn't too difficult to make one with a mcu
12:17 PM phipli: something like an arduino Leonardo
12:18 PM phipli: :)
12:18 PM phipli: I'd send a picture of a circuit diagram...
12:18 PM phipli: but bandwidth :)
12:19 PM phipli: basically, 2 transistors, one cap and a few resistors
12:33 PM IchGucksLive: hiu
01:13 PM IchGucksLive: Gn8
01:38 PM teo_: hello
01:40 PM teo_: can help me someone with the nvidia drivers and cnclinux ubuntu-10.04-linuxcnc3-i386 ?
01:41 PM teo_: i have a gforce fx 5600 nvidia graphics card and i cant' install the drivers
01:42 PM teo_: ? anyone ?
01:44 PM pcw_home: Is there some reason you are using such an old version of Ubuntu?
01:44 PM pcw_home: Does the Motherboard have on board video? (in which case I would just remove the nvidia card and use the on board graphics)
01:44 PM teo_: yes, the reason is the old pc
01:45 PM teo_: is better for me to install the Latest releases: 2.7.11
01:46 PM teo_: i install and this version but the nvidia card not work and i see a very bad screen with bad colours and lines with pixels
01:47 PM teo_: the pc is laptop acer aspire 1700 with 17" screen
01:47 PM teo_: and the card is nvidia geforce fx 5600
01:47 PM teo_: i read the driver i think is 173....
01:47 PM teo_: but i cant install
01:48 PM teo_: i can't remove the on board card on my laptop
01:50 PM teo_: on the ubuntu-10.04-linuxcnc3-i386 i can't fint the nvidia acceleration file ....
01:55 PM pcw_home: Have you tried the nouveau driver?
01:55 PM pcw_home: Pretty sure there are known problems using the nvidia driver with LinuxCNC
01:57 PM pcw_home: Also laptops are usually poor hosts for LinuxCNC due to inability to disable power management
02:00 PM teo_: i install the linuxcnc-2.7-wheezy and its not work random the card
02:01 PM teo_: i want try to put cnclinux on this laptop for now
02:02 PM CaptHindsight: just aware that you can try, but it is unlikely to work well
02:02 PM teo_: my card is geforce fx 5600
02:03 PM teo_: i read somewhere for blacklisted the nouveau
02:03 PM CaptHindsight: laptops and real time don't go together well, and on top of it you are fighting with old video drivers
02:05 PM teo_: my cnc is 3020t and i want to work only emc or 3
02:05 PM teo_: 2 or 3
02:05 PM teo_: ubuntu-10.04-linuxcnc3-i386 is better for me
02:06 PM teo_: i have the usb key with the boot live version
02:06 PM CaptHindsight: have you run the latency test on it yet?
02:06 PM teo_: how can i install the nvidia driver here
02:07 PM CaptHindsight: even with the funny screen colors?
02:07 PM CaptHindsight: are you asking howto install the nvidia drivers on the old Live version Linux CNC?
02:08 PM teo_: no and i dident know where is this test
02:08 PM teo_: yes
02:08 PM teo_: live for now and i install on my partition later
02:09 PM CaptHindsight: does your laptop boot from the USB flash drive?
02:09 PM teo_: yes its boot
02:10 PM teo_: at the start i hear 2 beaps
02:10 PM CaptHindsight: does it run the LCNC LiveCD?
02:11 PM CaptHindsight: do you get a desktop?
02:11 PM teo_: and it tell me iknow keyboard and configuration.... but its work fine ubuntu-10.04-linuxcnc3-i386 but with damage lines and colours
02:12 PM CaptHindsight: can you open a terminal when it is running?
02:12 PM teo_: yes i can open terminal
02:13 PM teo_: and i here and the sound
02:13 PM CaptHindsight: then do so and run "latency-test"
02:13 PM teo_: and i have and lan cable connect
02:13 PM teo_: ok
02:13 PM CaptHindsight: see if the latency jitter is even under 100,000
02:16 PM teo_: is very dificult now to see the screen BUT
02:17 PM teo_: i see a button reset statistics
02:17 PM teo_: and up
02:17 PM teo_: server
02:17 PM teo_: and base
02:18 PM teo_: the jitter is 11675 the up and 14108 the down i think
02:19 PM teo_: max internal (ms) 1010198 the up
02:19 PM teo_: and 38847 the down
02:20 PM teo_: last internal (ms) 999000 the up and 25000 the down
02:20 PM teo_: what can i see here ?\
02:21 PM teo_: i press reset
02:22 PM teo_: and the jitter is 2452 the up and 5900 the down
02:22 PM teo_: now?
02:24 PM teo_: once other problem to read on the net is i cant write inside the blacklist.conf file
02:25 PM phipli: teo - the others might have more specific experience, but often there isn't a need to install an old version of linux, just because your computer is old
02:25 PM phipli: linux keeps working well on older computers a lot better than windows or macos
02:25 PM phipli: it might be worth trying the latest
02:26 PM teo_: yes i know that
02:26 PM teo_: i install the last version and i have the same problem
02:27 PM phipli: have you tried any other OSes?
02:27 PM phipli: did the same thing happen on Windows?
02:27 PM teo_: someone know to install the nvidia geforce fx 5600
02:27 PM teo_: no, on the windows its work perfect
02:27 PM CaptHindsight: Max Jitter is the number of interest
02:28 PM phipli: teo_
02:28 PM CaptHindsight: you want to run latency test while running other apps
02:28 PM phipli: bring up the not-a-start-menu
02:28 PM phipli: search for "driver manager"
02:29 PM CaptHindsight: and run it for at least an hour
02:29 PM phipli: when you load it up it should suggest possible proprietary drivers
02:29 PM teo_: later this CaptHindsight
02:29 PM CaptHindsight: just so you know, adios!
02:30 PM teo_: for now i want install the driver for normal screen
02:30 PM CaptHindsight: Als feet are sane
02:31 PM CaptHindsight: Jerry Lewis has passed away :(
02:32 PM XXCoder: wow he lived a long life
02:33 PM teo_: yes phipli its tell me nvidia acceleration graphics driver version 173
02:33 PM teo_: but i can't activate
02:34 PM phipli: try the newer version of linuxcnc
02:34 PM phipli: or open a terminal and type apt-get update
02:34 PM phipli: and then try again
02:35 PM phipli: not even sure if it will work off a livecd / flash drive
02:36 PM teo_: ok
02:36 PM phipli: apt-get update should update the software lists
02:37 PM phipli: and will probably mean you're offered a newer driver version
02:37 PM phipli: but if you want to mess like this, I'd really suggest installing onto something
02:37 PM teo_: on ubuntu-10.04-linuxcnc3-i386 the apt-get update not work
02:37 PM phipli: because the chances are you'll lose everything when you reboot
02:38 PM phipli: what did it say
02:38 PM teo_: could not open lock file / .... .... ......
02:39 PM phipli: type sudo apt-get update
02:39 PM phipli: instead
02:39 PM teo_: o write anything you tell me and i remember i you find something good for card
02:40 PM teo_: o write anything you tell me and i remember if you find something good for card
02:41 PM teo_: yes it work this
02:42 PM phipli: go back and check in driver manager again
02:42 PM phipli: see if it offers a newer version
02:42 PM teo_: 2 pages with a lot of failed
02:43 PM phipli: you're running a version of linux that probably isn't supported any more
02:43 PM teo_: yes
02:43 PM teo_: i know that
02:43 PM phipli: you should use a newer version
02:43 PM phipli: but...
02:43 PM phipli: check back in driver manager and see if it offers a newer version
02:44 PM teo_: i have the new version linuxcnc-2.7-wheezy installing on my pc
02:44 PM teo_: ok i check back in driver manager and see if it offers a newer version
02:46 PM phipli: right.
02:46 PM phipli: so one of two things might happen,
02:46 PM phipli: you install it and it all works
02:46 PM phipli: or, you can't install it / you need to reboot, and because you're booted from a USB stick it resets and clears out your drivers
02:47 PM teo_: on hardware manager it havent anything
02:49 PM phipli: Sorry teo_ I can't think of anything else
02:49 PM phipli: I don't have the system you have installed
02:49 PM teo_: which system do you have ?
02:50 PM JT-Shop: phipli: I have about 1/2 of the chicks eating out of my hand... need figure out a non scary way to pick them up
02:50 PM phipli: encourage them to stand on your hand
02:51 PM JT-Shop: one does that now while eating
02:51 PM JT-Shop: cooler weather coming middle of next week I might get some 1/4" crickets
02:52 PM phipli: teo_: I have linux mint on this computer, and linuxcnc-2.7-wheezy to hand
02:52 PM teo_: do you have emc2 or 3 ?
02:53 PM teo_: what it mean to hand ?
02:55 PM phipli: "to hand" means set up and ready to use
02:55 PM teo_: do you have nvidia card ?
02:57 PM phipli: yes
02:57 PM teo_: and it find with the first the linux ?
02:58 PM teo_: You had general problems;
02:59 PM teo_: with the card ?
02:59 PM phipli: I don't have issues at the moment
02:59 PM phipli: running nvidia-375
03:06 PM JT-Shop: one person on the web suggests getting into the brooder with them... that ain't going to happen in my little brooder
03:06 PM phipli: :)
03:06 PM teo_: on this command " lspci | grep VGA" where is the | on my keyboard ?
03:06 PM phipli: our first lot were 16 weeks when we got them, and the still bonded with us well
03:07 PM phipli: depends
03:07 PM phipli: sometimes it has a break in the middle
03:07 PM phipli: looks like two vertical lines with a gap
03:07 PM phipli: on my keyboard it is in the lower left corner
03:07 PM phipli: on others it is in the top left...
03:08 PM teo_: ||| this ?
03:08 PM phipli: yeah
03:08 PM teo_: ||||||||
03:08 PM phipli: called a "pipe"
03:08 PM teo_: left from z letter
03:08 PM phipli: means feed the output of the left hand into the input of the right command
03:08 PM teo_: with shift
03:08 PM phipli: yeah
03:10 PM teo_: the nvidia driver who i want is proprietary
03:10 PM phipli: yes
03:10 PM teo_: on ubuntu-10.04-linuxcnc3-i386
03:12 PM teo_: There is an installation method to install the proprietary drivers when not available on the server ?
03:12 PM phipli: might be better to ask on a ubuntu irc channel
03:13 PM teo_: where can i find this ?
03:14 PM teo_: or How can I install and download drivers without internet?
03:14 PM JT-Shop: for U10.4 you need to enable back ports or something like that
03:14 PM phipli: #ubuntu
03:14 PM teo_: on ubuntu-10.04-linuxcnc3-i386
03:15 PM JT-Shop: phipli: one problem with my brooder is I have to reach down from the top... need to put a door in so I can reach in from the side
03:15 PM phipli: JT-Shop: good idea?
03:15 PM phipli: sorry, ignore that question mark
03:15 PM phipli: was being talked to at the same time I typed and included their question mark...
03:15 PM JT-Shop: I wonder if the chicks mind if I get the saw out lol
03:16 PM JT-Shop: I have some plastic mesh I can remove on the side
03:16 PM phipli: ours used to hate the strimmer
03:16 PM phipli: but now they like it
03:16 PM phipli: because it gives them grass trimmings
03:16 PM JT-Shop: teo_: http://www.mesaus.com/info/linuxcnc.html some info on keeping updates working for 10.04
03:16 PM teo_: i see now
03:16 PM JT-Shop: lol dual duty trim and feed with one effort
03:18 PM phipli: It does worry me - I'd rather they didn't stand as close as they can while I cut
03:26 PM JT-Shop: yea might sling a stone or something...
03:26 PM JT-Shop: wife is trying to feed them from her hand now that I've removed the mesh from the side
03:26 PM JT-Shop: she just started to interact with the first ones the day before they got killed
03:27 PM phipli: I stand with my back to them
03:28 PM phipli: ours still fight some
03:28 PM phipli: I wish they'd stop
03:29 PM phipli: it is making the younger ones more nervous and less easy to handle
03:29 PM teo_: how can i comment out one line ?
03:31 PM phipli: bash script?
03:31 PM phipli: #
03:31 PM teo_: yes
03:31 PM phipli: at the start of the line
03:31 PM teo_: ok
03:31 PM phipli: # echo "hello world"
03:32 PM teo_: only this "#" ?
03:34 PM teo_: how can i write on conf file? the system It does not let me to write on a live version of 10.04
03:34 PM Sabotend_ is now known as Sabotender
03:38 PM phipli: you should install on something if you want to make permanent changes.
03:39 PM phipli: There isn't really any way around it.
03:39 PM phipli: not sensibly
03:39 PM phipli: the live version is just to try it out
03:39 PM phipli: not to use
03:40 PM teo_: if i install can i write and save with regetis
03:40 PM teo_: if i install can i write and save with regedit ?
03:40 PM phipli: regedit is a windows thing
03:40 PM phipli: but you can make changes if you install somewhere
03:41 PM teo_: gedit on ubuntu
03:41 PM teo_: i want with gedit to make changes on conf files on 10.04
03:42 PM teo_: i cant write and i think i cant save the systems fili conf on the boot usb flash version
03:42 PM phipli: teo_: gedit is a text editor, regedit is for editing system settings
03:42 PM phipli: you can edit files using gedit if you like
03:42 PM teo_: yes, my false gedit i want
03:43 PM teo_: systems files on 10.04 i cant edit
03:43 PM phipli: do you have a second usb drive? if you want, you might be able to install a bootable version onto another usb drive
03:44 PM Kevin`: be careful with that, the large majority of usb drives are painfully slow for the type of IO a running system uses
03:44 PM teo_: from windows can i see the files from 10.04 ?
03:44 PM teo_: live version ?
03:45 PM phipli: probably not
04:04 PM JT-Shop: the side opening works much better but I need to remove one board and modify it some... easy to remove I built the brooder using pocket screws
04:05 PM phipli: :)
04:28 PM teo_: phipli if the driver is available and if the ubuntu is it can upgrade i download with the synaptics packete manager ?
04:29 PM teo_: if i find a driver in sunaptic manager i mark and if i install then the driver is inside the drivers wardhare of my pc ?
04:30 PM teo_: if i find a driver in sunaptic manager i mark and if i install then the driver is inside the drivers hardhare of my pc ?
04:30 PM phipli: should work
04:31 PM teo_: the live versions of linux can install drivers ? i have permisions to install new drivers ?
04:31 PM phipli: JT-Shop's link : http://www.mesaus.com/info/linuxcnc.html
04:31 PM phipli: might help you too
04:31 PM phipli: a live version isn't designed to modify
04:32 PM teo_: i see this link
04:32 PM teo_: and is good
04:32 PM teo_: ;)
04:33 PM teo_: but to install new drives I will have to install a new full version and not from boot usb ?
04:44 PM hazzy2 is now known as hazzy
04:46 PM teo_: where is the driver manager on the last version ?
04:47 PM teo_: linuxcnc-2.7-wheezy on this version where is the driver manager ?
04:59 PM phipli: teo_: just use package manager
05:04 PM teo_: the gedit it dident have the new version, how can i put in ?
05:04 PM Tom_L: package manager
05:04 PM teo_: where can i find ?\
05:04 PM phipli: I'm sorry, I don't understand
05:04 PM Tom_L: but it's not as good as the ubuntu version
05:04 PM teo_: no problem
05:05 PM teo_: which file is the correct on packet manager fro gedit ?
05:05 PM Tom_L: search for gedit
05:05 PM teo_: which file is the correct on packet manager for gedit ?
05:05 PM Tom_L: Application Menu -> Settings -> Synaptic Package Manager
05:06 PM Tom_L: Search "Gedit"
05:06 PM Tom_L: install
05:06 PM teo_: yes i find
05:07 PM teo_: how can i install the gedit application ?
05:08 PM Tom_L: :/
05:09 PM phipli: click on the box left of the name
05:09 PM phipli: select mark for installation
05:09 PM phipli: then click on "Apply"
05:10 PM JT-Shop: taking that bottom board out works much better, now they climb all over my hand and jump over my arm
05:10 PM Deejay: gn8
05:10 PM JT-Shop: night Deejay
05:10 PM phipli: night Deejay
05:10 PM phipli: JT-Shop: excellent :)
05:11 PM teo_: i find
05:12 PM teo_: the pc after install a application from packet manager it want reboot ?
05:13 PM CaptHindsight: jikes, 3 hours of driver fiddling!
05:13 PM phipli: and taking advice from someone who's had two bottles of beer and two glasses of port...
05:13 PM phipli: (although that might be the cause of the 3 hours...)
05:14 PM JT-Shop: even Blondie came and ate out of my hand for the first time
05:14 PM Tom_L: teo_ no need to reboot
05:14 PM teo_: no it want rebbot :)\
05:15 PM phipli: but you don't have to :)
05:15 PM JT-Shop: one tried to bump the dominate one off my hand and she just sat down
05:15 PM phipli: on it?
05:16 PM JT-Shop: she was standing on my hand, 2 were then one hopped off and head butted and she just sat down on my hand and looked around
05:17 PM * Tom_L thinks JT-Shop is having too much fun with the wild chicks
05:23 PM phipli: Tom_L: everybody needs some chicks in their life
05:23 PM phipli: THEY'RE SO FLUFFY
05:23 PM phipli: <cough>
05:27 PM TeslaTony: Just wait until they're older and you get woken up at 4am every morning by a cock going off
05:27 PM teo_: yesss
05:27 PM teo_: i fountttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt
05:27 PM teo_: i fountttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt
05:27 PM teo_: i fountttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt
05:27 PM teo_: :))))))))))
05:27 PM teo_: ITS WORKS
05:27 PM phipli: TeslaTony: Mine are older
05:28 PM phipli: TeslaTony: Don't have a cockerel though
05:28 PM TeslaTony: My condolences, phipli
05:28 PM teo_: YOU ARE PERFECT!!! ALL!
05:28 PM phipli: I think teo_ is happy
05:28 PM TeslaTony: Ah. Smart move
05:28 PM phipli: TeslaTony: http://gallery.elephantandchicken.co.uk/#!album-3
05:29 PM phipli: the brown ones are older, the others are about 16 weeks or so
05:29 PM TeslaTony: Are those Rhode Island Reds?
05:29 PM phipli: crosses
05:30 PM phipli: they're half RIR and half white sussex crosses
05:30 PM TeslaTony: Nice. What are the black and white ones? That patterning is really cool
05:30 PM phipli: That one is called a "speckledy"
05:30 PM phipli: Which is half Cuckoo Maran and half RIR
05:31 PM phipli: the only pure bread is the white one
05:31 PM phipli: which is a white sussex
05:31 PM phipli: very old breed - actually a Roman breed - so about 2000 years old!
05:32 PM phipli: *Roman era
05:32 PM TeslaTony: Oh, wow. That's awesome
05:33 PM phipli: We wanted an Orpington... but the breeder was out of them :(
05:34 PM TeslaTony: Not familiar with that breed
05:34 PM phipli: They're massive
05:34 PM JT-Shop: phipli: I took a piece of 1" square mesh and made a door for the new opening, just need to make some clips to hang it on
05:34 PM phipli: https://www.google.co.uk/search?biw=1745&bih=875&tbm=isch&sa=1&q=orpington+chicken
05:34 PM JT-Shop: the chicks are much more comfortable with me at their level
05:35 PM JT-Shop: and now they can see out the side better
05:35 PM phipli: I've never kept chicks
05:35 PM phipli: when I was a kid we always got older birds
05:35 PM phipli: either rescues (ex battery) or from friends' flocks
05:36 PM teo_: the update of the new linuxcnc-2.7-wheezy it have and drivers inside ?
05:36 PM JT-Shop: the only exposure I had with chickens was the annual vacation to the grand parents farm in north carolina
05:36 PM teo_: i dident have sound
05:36 PM teo_: and i dident have big resolution on nvidia
05:37 PM JT-Shop: the lady that helped grandmother would cut their head off with a hatchet and make me chase them...
05:37 PM gloops: orpingtons are large fowl
05:37 PM phipli: They're really big
05:37 PM gloops: yes, eat a lot
05:38 PM JT-Shop: I need a donkey in the chicken yard to protect them lol
05:38 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, pretty soon you'll have a regular farm
05:38 PM phipli: gloops: this photo makes me laugh : https://www.omlet.co.uk/images/cache/426/320/orpington_chickens_eve_and_her_buff_orpington_cockerel_d34662ab63f1b7f65cd1549c.jpg
05:38 PM phipli: JT-Shop: geese are quite good
05:38 PM gloops: ive got black leghorns atm, eat very little, lay quite a lot, the strain i have is unusually very inclined to go broody though
05:38 PM phipli: or ostrich
05:39 PM mrme: phipli haha is that ur child with the chicken?
05:39 PM JT-Shop: cool photo glad it was small :)
05:39 PM gloops: is that one of yours phipli - buff orpington
05:39 PM phipli: mrme: no - just a randomer on the internet
05:39 PM phipli: when you search for "buff orpington" it shows up as a picture
05:39 PM phipli: gives an idea of the size!
05:40 PM phipli: gloops: no, we didn't manage to get an orpington - they didn't have any in stock
05:40 PM phipli: we wanted one though :(
05:40 PM gloops: they are a dual purpose bird, layers and for the pot
05:40 PM phipli: and a blue ranger
05:40 PM JT-Shop: my neighbor has some huge chickens forget the type
05:40 PM phipli: https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=blue+ranger+chicken&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiShJb36ebVAhWsJ8AKHQtjAagQ_AUICigB&biw=1745&bih=875
05:40 PM gloops: have a look on preloved phipli lots of chickens for sale, POL
05:41 PM gloops: or get some eggs and hatch them
05:41 PM phipli: gloops: we have 4 now
05:41 PM phipli: only got a small garden
05:41 PM phipli: (and live in the middle of a city!)
05:41 PM phipli: When we move out of town we'll get more :)
05:42 PM gloops: ahh ok, well they are all characters anyway youll have plenty of amusement with whichever ones you have
05:42 PM phipli: Yeah - I've had chickens for most of my life :)
05:42 PM phipli: great little friends
05:42 PM * JT-Shop does not know what possessed him to order 9 chicks and they sent an extra one so now 10
05:43 PM gloops: lol
05:43 PM JT-Shop: I built the coop with 6 in mind
05:43 PM phipli: never have problems finding find someone to look after them - lots of my friends like to visit them
05:43 PM JT-Shop: http://gnipsel.com/images/chickens/
05:44 PM phipli: I'd be comfortable with 6 in our coop, but don't want to get carried away until the next house
05:44 PM gloops: probably found warrens to be the most friendly, the kids used to pick them up and stroke them, they went into a kind of trance, held them like on their back and their head just drooped down almost lifeless
05:44 PM JT-Shop: my buddy Ricky is glad to watch over them... it's the only animal he didn't mind taken care of as a kid
05:45 PM phipli: ours don't mind being carried about
05:45 PM phipli: the Warrens look just like ours :)
05:45 PM phipli: oh, wait
05:45 PM phipli: the missus says that they're another name for the same breed as our older girls
05:45 PM phipli: so we have some :)
05:45 PM JT-Shop: never thought I'd be using the brooder this soon, just glad I did a google search for chicks and found out I still had time to get more
05:45 PM phipli: I'm glad you got more
05:46 PM JT-Shop: yea they are healers for a sad heart
05:46 PM gloops: most commercial layers here are warrens, rhode island red x light sussex
05:46 PM phipli: when they grow up they get really attached to you
05:46 PM phipli: you want to see ours
05:46 PM phipli: when they hear me arrive home from work they come running over
05:47 PM phipli: gloops: we usually just call them "hybrids" because they are the generic battery chicken
05:47 PM gloops: yeah thats what they are
05:47 PM phipli: gloops: did you see the pictures of my birds?
05:48 PM gloops: no didnt see them, i had some of ours but cant remember flickr login
05:48 PM phipli: http://gallery.elephantandchicken.co.uk/#!album-3
05:49 PM gloops: nice birds, they look happy anyway
05:50 PM phipli: the older ones have bonded with us very well
05:50 PM phipli: the younger ones are still settling in
05:51 PM JT-Shop: the chicks spend time looking out the mesh now at their new bigger world
05:51 PM JT-Shop: gotta make some proper clips to hang it
05:51 PM gloops: theyll be fine, they find their own place in the tribe, plenty of room to move around
05:51 PM phipli: JT-Shop: that is quite an awesome side result of the side door :)
05:52 PM gloops: i think raising and keeping chickens is theraputic JT
05:52 PM phipli: it is
05:52 PM JT-Shop: yes, it is an amazing difference to have the side door
05:52 PM phipli: at the end of a long day at work, spoiling them rotten makes me happy
05:54 PM JT-Shop: now they can see me coming from a distance and are more relaxed than when I popped over the horizon like a hawk
05:54 PM phipli: :)
05:55 PM dioz: you gonna eat them?
05:56 PM phipli: nice
05:56 PM gloops: lol
05:57 PM phipli: dioz : keeping chickens is about the most expensive way of getting meat ever
05:57 PM JT-Shop: dioz: for eggs and pets
05:57 PM gloops: for geese, as pets the african geese are best
05:57 PM phipli: you can break even doing it for eggs and selling them
05:57 PM phipli: eating them... is less useful
05:57 PM phipli: meat chickens are culled really early on
05:57 PM gloops: they are really gentle natured animals, still get angry but lovely animals to have around
05:57 PM phipli: something like 14 weeks
05:57 PM JT-Shop: like 6 weeks?
05:58 PM phipli: or sooner
05:58 PM JT-Shop: ahh
06:21 PM Tom_itx: JT-Shop, cool weather on the way soon?
