12:02 AM CaptHindsight: if used for a positioner it would wobble at least a few thou
12:04 AM CaptHindsight: the balls in the bearing blocks are semi round/spherical
12:04 AM CaptHindsight: look for deals on used
12:04 AM CaptHindsight: THK, NSK, Thompson, etc
12:07 AM cncnoob: Time to walk the dog. Later!
12:54 AM hazzy1 is now known as hazzy
01:47 AM IchGucksLive: morning from Germany
02:05 AM Vq: Good morning from Sweden
02:31 AM Deejay: moin
02:37 AM Crom: evening from peoples republic of Kalifornistan
02:39 AM Crom: The little GPS modules VK16E Rock!
03:01 AM pink_vampire: hi
03:01 AM pink_vampire: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGPjonxrUYc
03:33 AM Crom: where you in Miami?
04:09 AM pink_vampire: Crom: NY
05:23 AM jthornton: morning
05:41 AM XXCoder: hey pink_vampire jthornton
05:54 AM Tom_itx: jt, ever use ddrescue?
05:55 AM jthornton: never hear of it
05:55 AM Tom_itx: hope you never do :)
05:57 AM XXCoder: too late he heard of it now ;)
05:59 AM Tom_itx: just wondered how successful it was
06:02 AM jthornton: what does it do?
06:02 AM Tom_itx: It copies data from one file or block device (hard disk, CD-ROM, etc.) to another, trying hard to rescue data in case of read errors
06:03 AM jthornton: ah
07:03 AM XXCoder: more crazyness https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-HptrAzLVI0
10:23 AM Simonious: https://snag.gy/rLAmNg.jpg so I want to do an extrude on the face up and to the left, but there is no sketch for that face and selecting it with extrude boss base creates a sketch, but doesn't let me extrude (I am a novice, so I'm probably missing something obvious)
10:23 AM Simonious: I could trace that whole face, but that doesn't seem like the correct solution.
10:27 AM archivist: ew terribl js on that page I see a grey screen and nothing else
10:28 AM archivist: nothing calls the js that is loaded!
10:30 AM archivist: this works https://i.snag.gy/rLAmNg.jpg
10:30 AM archivist: cannot see what software you are running
10:32 AM Simonious: solidworks, I think I got it, convert entities in the sketch that it drops you into after attempting to extrude the face.
10:41 AM cncnoob: I'm researching a VFD upgrade for my mini mill. I currently have an R8 spindle, but it seems like all the VFD compliant spindle motors have an ERxx spindle. I'm looking to see how much it will cost to replace things like my face mill, but I don't even see any ER20 or ER32 face mills. Do they exist?
10:47 AM roycroft: cncnoob: you get straight shaft tooling for er collets and chuck the tooling in a collet
10:48 AM CaptHindsight: https://ae01.alicdn.com/kf/HTB1j17ILXXXXXXHXFXXq6xXFXXXX/MT3-FMB27-M12-Face-Mill-Arbor-Shell-end-mill-arbor-Morse-taper-tool-holder-.jpg
10:52 AM CaptHindsight: http://www.ebay.com/itm/pair-of-ingersoll-face-mills-on-R8-shanks-fit-bridgeport-insert-saver-set-/182638895432
10:56 AM cncnoob: That second one would work in an ER too?
10:57 AM roycroft: no
10:57 AM roycroft: they're r8
11:07 AM cncnoob: @CaptHindsight, seems like there are a lot more tooling options for the R8
11:08 AM sync: that is incorrect
11:08 AM cncnoob: I'm thinking about trying to keep the R8 and install the new motor with a belt drive so I don't have to deal with the ERXX
11:10 AM cncnoob: So I have this facemill right now
11:10 AM cncnoob: http://www.grizzly.com/products/Face-Mill/G2861?utm_campaign=zPage&utm_source=grizzly.com
11:11 AM cncnoob: Capthindsight said I should use a straight shaft tooling, but my google searches aren't giving me any good results. Searching for R8 face mill on the other hand returns a ton of results.
11:17 AM CaptHindsight: cncnoob: roycroft mentioned the straight shaft
11:17 AM CaptHindsight: I just supplied the pics and ebay example
11:18 AM cncnoob: Sorry, I switched from my phone to PC and lost the conversation history
11:19 AM cncnoob: Neither of the links you provided will work with an ERxx spindle though, isn't that correct?
11:19 AM cncnoob: The first one is a taper, and the second one was an R8
11:19 AM CaptHindsight: you can put a straight shaft into an ERxx
11:20 AM cncnoob: Guess what I'm saying is I'm not able to find a straight shaft face mill to purchase
11:20 AM CaptHindsight: it's clumsy
11:21 AM CaptHindsight: I have some
11:22 AM CaptHindsight: they are out there
11:23 AM cncnoob: http://www.shars.com/products/indexable-cutting/indexable-milling/3-4-shank-1-1-2-carbide-indexable-end-mill
11:23 AM cncnoob: This guy looks like a face mill, but it says it is an end mill
11:23 AM cncnoob: I think that would work
11:24 AM cncnoob: I always thought of an end mill as a bit, and a face mill as having inserts
12:26 PM IchGucksLive: hi from germany
12:27 PM Loetmichel: *BOOARPS*... no wonder i am getting fat... my wife ordered a big king and 2 small fries "on my way home"... *note to self: buying food on an empty stomach is a bad idea*... ended up with paing 41.03eur for big king menue, xtra long chilli chees menue, 20pack chilli cheese nuggets, two whoppers and two mango smoothies... MAN am i full right now... ;)
12:28 PM roycroft: my doctor told me to severely cut back on carbs
12:28 PM roycroft: meals are a bit more challenging than they used to be now
12:29 PM IchGucksLive: roycroft: on your age it doesent matter
12:29 PM roycroft: it does, actually
12:29 PM roycroft: i have elevated blood sugar
12:29 PM roycroft: not diabetes, but it could turn into diabetes if i don't make some adjustments
12:30 PM roycroft: it's never too late to get healthier!
12:31 PM IchGucksLive: Q to the electronics here today i got a look inside a bigger mashine with 3 PSU 36V and they all where connected on the power out
12:31 PM IchGucksLive: is this comen
12:32 PM IchGucksLive: i never did connect the psu together
12:32 PM IchGucksLive: is there maybe a better performence to get them parallel
12:33 PM Vq: IchGucksLive: They have to be designed to be connected in parallel to do that.
12:34 PM IchGucksLive: is thee a marking sign for able to do that on psu's
12:34 PM IchGucksLive: i personly will never go that way
12:35 PM IchGucksLive: i got into so mutch trouble by coneccting ground
12:45 PM IchGucksLive: Vq: i do not find any info on connecting PSU inside lcnc forum
12:51 PM Vq: IchGucksLive: I'm not sure I understand your problem, do you have a load that require more current than a single one of your PSUs can deliver?
12:52 PM IchGucksLive: no not me i order always on fitting PSU to loads
12:52 PM IchGucksLive: but the hobbyist today i have been visiting
12:53 PM IchGucksLive: did go for 3 cheep psu and wirer them togeter and then to all 5 M542
12:53 PM IchGucksLive: i looked in 1-2-3 the 3 psu are half the price of my one at 14A out
12:53 PM Vq: Ah, sorry, didn't read your first line properly.
12:54 PM IchGucksLive: so it is only a space of mounting on his view
12:54 PM IchGucksLive: Thats what i asked
12:54 PM Vq: I've seen it done in a CNC machine before with two 24V PSUs that did not support paralleling, one of them blew.
12:55 PM IchGucksLive: thats what i also think
12:55 PM Vq: I'm not an EE but my day time job is at a company that designs DC/DC converters.
12:55 PM IchGucksLive: not a good idee
12:55 PM Vq: Some of our products supports paralleling/current sharing and some doesn't.
12:56 PM IchGucksLive: i wirer always XYZ at 14A PSU
12:56 PM Vq: And for those that do there are usually constraints for resistance between outputs and the number of converters.
12:56 PM IchGucksLive: or XY ZA on 2 9A psu
12:57 PM IchGucksLive: at 4.2A per/ph
12:58 PM IchGucksLive: the new TB6600 have now included phase control on 400steps/rev
12:58 PM IchGucksLive: 2A and 2B
12:58 PM IchGucksLive: 2B is 0-100%
12:58 PM IchGucksLive: 2A goes on 0-50-100%
12:59 PM IchGucksLive: and gives a mutch better steppper tourqe performence on higher Speed
12:59 PM IchGucksLive: my personel expirience
01:03 PM roycroft: wire the stuff in series
01:03 PM roycroft: that way you'll get more volts
01:03 PM roycroft: and your stuff will run faster
01:03 PM roycroft: until the magic smoke comes out
01:04 PM roycroft: but perhaps if you wrap duct tape really tightly around all your stuff the magic smoke will never be able to make an escape
01:05 PM IchGucksLive: 2V steppers on 48V DC is quite fast enough
01:06 PM IchGucksLive: 160ipm is a good going mashine
01:06 PM IchGucksLive: 4m/min
01:07 PM IchGucksLive: odd is only now that we got real good PC i need to take down all the goods to one core
01:07 PM CaptHindsight: I have one that only moves at ~25um per minute, 24V should be good enough
01:08 PM IchGucksLive: latency <8000 is a realy performence luck
01:08 PM IchGucksLive: CaptHindsight: there is a 5V/24V psu as big as a smokeing box
01:09 PM IchGucksLive: that woudt give you a realy tiny E-box
01:09 PM IchGucksLive: on the small L297 Amps
01:12 PM IchGucksLive: Loetmichel: did you see alot of rain this days
01:12 PM Loetmichel: not a drip
01:12 PM Loetmichel: drop
01:13 PM IchGucksLive: here it has been bearly more berlin got it all yesterday
01:15 PM IchGucksLive: im off for today hard day at my age
01:15 PM IchGucksLive: GN8 from Germany
01:16 PM roycroft: looks like he's having a hard day's night
01:21 PM cncnoob: Are there any adapters or is there any way to hold a bit with a 3/4" shank in an ER20 which has a max shank size of 1/2"?
01:22 PM cncnoob: or is it not recommended to step up sizes like that?
01:22 PM roycroft: you should not do that
01:23 PM roycroft: i would really recommend you consider my plan of mounting an auxiliary spindle when you need high speeds, and retaining the stock r8 spindle
01:23 PM cncnoob: I guess I can get reduced shank bits :/
01:23 PM roycroft: another alternative is to get high speed bearings for your existing spindle and running it 2x as fast
01:24 PM cncnoob: That is what I think I would rather do
01:24 PM roycroft: i'm getting a spindle with an er20 collet for my wood router, but all the tooling for that will have 1/4", 8mm, and 1/2" shanks
01:25 PM roycroft: so i'm fine with that setup
01:25 PM roycroft: and i only need 3 collets for it
01:25 PM cncnoob: The spindles with an ER32 holder are a bit too expensive and to large for my mill
01:25 PM roycroft: i'll also be working relatively soft materials
01:25 PM roycroft: what mini mill do you have?
01:25 PM cncnoob: HF 44991
01:26 PM roycroft: what is that?
01:26 PM cncnoob: Harbor Freight
01:26 PM roycroft: what is its equivalent?
01:26 PM cncnoob: https://www.harborfreight.com/two-speed-variable-bench-mill-drill-machine-44991.html
01:26 PM roycroft: oh, it's the really little one
01:26 PM cncnoob: Grizzly G0704 I think
01:26 PM cncnoob: Or the Sieg X2
01:27 PM cncnoob: If I can get the R8 spindle to 10K with new bearings I would be happy
01:27 PM cncnoob: That may be asking too much though
01:27 PM roycroft: i have a g0463
01:28 PM roycroft: and i know there is a spindle bearing upgrade for that that allows for higher speeds
01:28 PM roycroft: but your machine is a lot smaller than mine
01:28 PM roycroft: i'm not sure what's out there for it
01:28 PM roycroft: but there is probably something
01:30 PM cncnoob: I suppose I could also just do a permanent adapter to an ER32 on one of these motors
01:30 PM cncnoob: http://www.ebay.com/itm/ER20-2-2KW-WATER-COOLED-SPINDLE-MOTOR-MILLING-CNC-GRIND-ENGRAVING-IMPACT-/181561637163?epid=676176061&hash=item2a45eab92b:g:CK8AAOSw3utY5eXk
01:42 PM roycroft: you have to ask yourself if your machine can handle such large tooling
01:42 PM roycroft: or ask us, and we'll probably say "no" :)
02:00 PM djdelorie: when the question of "can my machine handle it?" comes up, I *assume* "no"... then do it anyway ;-)
02:02 PM * roycroft tries to make a reasoned assessment, and might then push what he thinks is the acceptable limit a wee bit to see how it performs
02:04 PM djdelorie: yeah, well, if I wanted reasonable I wouldn't have made a cnc machine out of scrap wood ;-)
02:09 PM XXCoder: scrap wood machine should be able to replace its parts with alum
02:09 PM * JT-Shop should be doing something...
02:09 PM XXCoder: when alum framed maybe it can cut little harder than alum but not that much I think
02:09 PM XXCoder: JT-Shop: yes, you forgot sending me cnc machine
02:09 PM djdelorie: yeah, I always intended to make a better machine using the first one...
02:10 PM LeelooMinai: Well, you can also make the first machine better using itself - by upgrading some parts step by step.
02:11 PM djdelorie: The first machine was literally 100% "use what we have" :-)
02:12 PM djdelorie: I'd like to have one big enough to handle a full sheet of plywood, but I need to clean the basement a bit first...
02:15 PM roycroft: i wonder if, after i finish the cnc conversion of my mill/drill, i can upgrade it to a bridgeport class machine step by step :)
02:18 PM LeelooMinai: Evolution created homo sapiens from a bunch of random chemicals, step by step, so the answer is yes, given sufficently long time:p
02:20 PM XXCoder: yep lol
02:20 PM XXCoder: LeelooMinai: when you look at earlier machines you can see more and more of humble drill press mills was designed from
02:21 PM XXCoder: amazing really
02:21 PM XXCoder: mill to cnc machines equally interesting
02:22 PM LeelooMinai: Many people like to design this way - they create something, then play with it, notice opportunities for improvments and new features, etc.
02:23 PM LeelooMinai: Takes long time, but the process is very rewarding.
02:25 PM automata_: hi anyone working on jerk limitation and S curve profiling with linuxcnc?
02:25 PM LeelooMinai: jerk limitation...
02:26 PM LeelooMinai: I would rething this name:)
02:26 PM LeelooMinai: rethink*
02:26 PM XXCoder: unfortunately 4th derviation is jerk
02:27 PM CaptHindsight: roycroft: too bad you're so far, I have a bridgeport I'd give you for cheap
02:28 PM CaptHindsight: automata_: ask in the dev channel or most likely on the forums
02:28 PM automata_: ok...
02:29 PM CaptHindsight: or mail list
02:29 PM automata_: ok sure...
02:29 PM CaptHindsight: the core devs tend to be on the dev mail list
02:30 PM CaptHindsight: they would be able to chat about the low level nitty gritty
02:36 PM CaptHindsight: will typical electric hot water elements hold up in free air vs submersed in water?
02:38 PM JT-Shop: no, the watt density is much too high
02:38 PM cradek: at reduced power they would
02:38 PM cradek: but consider an electric oven element instead
02:39 PM CaptHindsight: yeah, those are nichrome
02:39 PM CaptHindsight: what do they use for water heaters?
02:39 PM Tom_itx: probably thinner nichrome
02:40 PM Tom_itx: but they know it's got a heatsink on it
02:40 PM CaptHindsight: surface area looks similar for some hot water vs stove elements
02:41 PM Tom_itx: mic the wire inside
02:43 PM CaptHindsight: so they don't make them fail safe
02:43 PM CaptHindsight: tank goes dry and the heater heats till it opens/melts
02:44 PM Tom_itx: i have no idea
02:44 PM CaptHindsight: well safe inside the tank
02:44 PM CaptHindsight: elements are <$10
02:44 PM CaptHindsight: but a plumber will charge you far more
02:46 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.mcmaster.com/#die-strip-heaters
02:46 PM cncnoob: @roycroft I regularly use a 3/4" end mill and a 2.5" face mill
02:47 PM cncnoob: no problems as of yet
02:48 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DT0Yy0IoXSY Cylinder head milling on a BP
02:49 PM roycroft: but not in a tiny spindle at high speed
02:49 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gH8uUj8-3A0
02:50 PM CaptHindsight: darn I wanted to see that cutter spin up
02:56 PM XXCoder: what a big cutter
02:57 PM cncnoob: @roycroft, yeah I wouldn't try to run my 2.5" face mill at high speeds on my small machine.
02:59 PM CaptHindsight: http://www.ebay.com/itm/8-ALUMINUM-FACE-SHELL-MILL-1-1-2-ARBOR-FOR-BRIDGEPORT-HAAS-ETC-NEW-/291571088923

02:59 PM CaptHindsight: auto machine shops often are hacks
03:10 PM phipli: evening
03:11 PM XXCoder: hey
03:36 PM JT-Shop: hay
03:36 PM pink_vampire: hi JT-Shop
03:36 PM XXCoder: hey
03:36 PM JT-Shop: heh
03:41 PM TurBoss: hello
03:42 PM XXCoder: now that hellos are done, lets discuss this http://68.media.tumblr.com/da624904e4705d0f65e9d11dd041ddb8/tumblr_inline_orlt8eANE31sppt0x_1280.png
03:42 PM XXCoder: lol
03:42 PM TurBoss: :)
03:57 PM phipli: ping
03:57 PM phipli: JT-Shop: Thought - you've not shared a picture of your birds in a while
04:02 PM JT-Shop: http://gnipsel.com/images/chicks/water-stand2.jpg
04:03 PM XXCoder: works well?
04:07 PM XXCoder: holy shit thats bad lol http://mcmansionhell.com/post/161329177461/50-states-of-mcmansion-hell-harford-county
04:10 PM phipli: JT-Shop: they're looking all grown up!
04:12 PM JT-Shop: yea they are 12.3 weeks old now... getting close to the 16 week point where eggs might start popping out
04:12 PM JT-Shop: one of the hens is larger than the rest maybe she will be the first to lay an egg
04:13 PM phipli: you know you said one of ours looked like a Barred Rock - the Missus says that it is half "Cuckoo Maran" and half Rhode Island Red
04:14 PM phipli: The Cuckoo Maran looks like your Barred Rocks
04:14 PM phipli: The blue one is a similar mix, but with a different type of Maran
04:14 PM phipli: a "Copper blue maran"
04:15 PM phipli: look like they've started rusting
04:16 PM JT-Shop: The Marans is now officially a recognized breed of the Continental Class by the American Poultry Association. The Cuckoo Marans were developed in France in the town of Marans during the mid 1800's
04:16 PM JT-Shop: interesting that we recognize them after how long lol
04:17 PM pink_vampire: 60psi + pizza = all over pizza
04:18 PM pink_vampire: 30psi + pizza = blow the heat just fine.
04:19 PM JT-Shop: http://gnipsel.com/images/chicks/12weeks.jpg
04:20 PM phipli: shee looks like mi
04:20 PM phipli: *mine
04:21 PM JT-Shop: wow there is an active #esp8266 channel
04:22 PM phipli: http://elephantandchicken.co.uk/chickenProjects/Nonsense1.jpg
04:23 PM JT-Shop: how old is that one?
04:24 PM phipli: 2 years?
04:26 PM phipli: She's half Rhode Island
04:26 PM phipli: as is just about every Hybrid
04:29 PM JT-Shop: finally got this esp8266 to connect to the router out here in the shop
04:30 PM phipli: had problems?
04:30 PM phipli: seen this : https://github.com/jeelabs/esp-link
04:30 PM phipli: quite awesome
04:31 PM roycroft: half rhode island and half connecticut?
04:32 PM phipli: half sussex star : http://www.downsizer.net/gallery/13068/L+Sussex+breeding+hen.jpg
04:32 PM phipli: (not mine)
04:32 PM JT-Shop: yea pebkc wrong router name lol
04:33 PM phipli: or perhaps light susses - basically look the same
04:33 PM phipli: *sussex
04:33 PM JT-Shop: that one yours?
04:34 PM phipli: roycroft: UK chicken breeds are often slightly different - especially the hybrids
04:34 PM phipli: they often use Rhode Island as one side of the cross
04:34 PM phipli: but cross with different things
04:34 PM phipli: Rhode Islands are really tough
04:34 PM phipli: so good genes to get in the mix
04:35 PM JT-Shop: not seen that esp one before
04:35 PM phipli: JT-Shop: I've looked into it, but not used it
04:35 PM phipli: looks useful
04:35 PM phipli: handy for remote monitoring linux terminals through serial
04:35 PM phipli: although I guess you could wifi
04:36 PM phipli: handy for /something/
04:36 PM phipli: Serial ports on machines?
04:45 PM JT-Shop: we have had a rash of raccoons this year, some speculate the flooding this spring made them all head for high ground and never went back
04:46 PM JT-Shop: they don't have much luck around here...
04:48 PM Deejay: gn8
05:12 PM CaptHindsight: JT-Shop: do they hang out late, make noise and drink your beer?
05:12 PM phipli: the chickens or the raccoons?
05:13 PM CaptHindsight: around here it's mosquitoes, very very active this year
05:14 PM phipli: CaptHindsight: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-36854781
05:14 PM phipli: actually, tell me if that link doesn't work
05:14 PM phipli: it might be geolocked
05:18 PM CaptHindsight: link works here
05:19 PM CaptHindsight: not much malaria around here
05:20 PM CaptHindsight: a synthetic virus that only attacks mosquitoes would be nice
05:21 PM CaptHindsight: but what eats mosquitoes? fish?
05:22 PM roycroft: we have HEAPS of mosquiteaux this year
05:22 PM roycroft: this is good
05:23 PM roycroft: the booth where i work at the country fair sells mosquito repellent
05:23 PM roycroft: sales will be fantastic this year
05:25 PM phipli: CaptHindsight: drives off mosquitoes though (hence helping with malaria) - so if mosquitoes are an issue, it helps
05:27 PM CaptHindsight: I just need someone to send me several pounds of chicken poop
05:27 PM CaptHindsight: maybe garments made from the stuff
05:31 PM roycroft: i am on vacation!
05:31 PM phipli: somewhere nice?
05:39 PM jdh: I am on vacation1
06:07 PM JT-Shop: CaptHindsight: the raccoons break into chicken coops and eat the eggs as well as crap on your porch and the former is not tolerated
06:37 PM Tom_itx: JT-Shop, are you on raccoon patrol?
06:52 PM pink_vampire: I need an idea from an archaeologist.
07:00 PM pink_vampire: XXCoder: ?
07:52 PM JT-Shop: Tom_itx: yea rat patrol
08:27 PM roycroft: i've been watching rat patrol lately
08:27 PM roycroft: that was one of my favorite war shows in the '60s
09:18 PM pink_vampire: is there a way to reduce the colors in win 7?
09:19 PM Crom: pink_vampire: should be able to set color depth to 24 or 16 or 8 bits or 2 bits
09:19 PM pink_vampire: I know how to do that in win xp
09:20 PM Crom: hmm hercules was 4 bits of grey I think
09:20 PM Crom: right click on desktop.. pretty much same way
09:21 PM pink_vampire: i did
