12:22 AM CaptHindsight: http://www.3ders.org/articles/20170605-3d-printing-company-deezmaker-looking-to-kickstart-maker-muscle-customizable-actuator.html
12:25 AM CaptHindsight: superflex actuator!
12:30 AM CaptHindsight: http://www.ebay.com/itm/DC-12V-330lbs-Linear-Actuator-150KG-Max-Lift-Electric-Motor-for-Medical-Auto-Car-/191299721987
12:44 AM SpeedEvil: MASS PRODUCTION MOTHERFUNKERS. DO YOU SPEAK IT.
12:46 AM pink_vampire: I need help with feed and speed calculation.
12:47 AM SpeedEvil: I have actually been wondering about things like that - though from a somewhat different aspect - _really_ high power-weight.
12:47 AM SpeedEvil: Sort of like a powered muscle, with ~500W or so peak input power, and rapid moves, tension only
12:50 AM pink_vampire: 11/16" end mill, 4F HSS. Depth of cut = 40mm (1.62"), rpm = 1000rpm, material = aluminum 6061.
12:51 AM pink_vampire: what will be good as feed rate, and what will be good as radial cut?
12:52 AM archivist: pink_vampire, not in one pass
12:52 AM CaptHindsight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLlqup8Ay0k entire 24 story building on fire
12:52 AM CaptHindsight: still hasn't fallen down
12:52 AM pink_vampire: archivist I know not in one pass,
12:53 AM pink_vampire: 0.1mm radial cut is ok?
12:58 AM LeelooMinai: pink_vampire: When I was figuring things like that out, I was looking at CPT mostly, where 2mil was a good place to start, presumably.
12:58 AM archivist: per rev, per tooth, or what, use an online calculator
12:58 AM LeelooMinai: O also have something called HSMADvisor - it's 30 day trial, but seems it still works.
12:59 AM LeelooMinai: Looks like this, and helps with calculations: http://i.imgur.com/d0nXBRR.png
12:59 AM LeelooMinai: pink_vampire: I found a video by that NYC CNC guy about why looking at CPT is more important than surface speed useful. Want a link?
01:27 AM IchGucksLive: morning from Germany#
01:28 AM IchGucksLive: CaptHindsight: european concrete not steel bars
01:29 AM IchGucksLive: pink_vampire: still on the large hole
01:29 AM pink_vampire: yes
01:29 AM IchGucksLive: look at estlcam you can do toradorial on that
01:29 AM IchGucksLive: my chees with lots of smace gets up to pro
01:32 AM IchGucksLive: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UdvROAlCMMQ
01:32 AM IchGucksLive: here is a self test
01:34 AM IchGucksLive: smace eq space
01:35 AM IchGucksLive: ok im off today 2 more mills gone be finished i hope
02:17 AM Deejay: moin
04:50 AM XXCoder: booo
04:50 AM XXCoder: today kinda sucjked
04:50 AM XXCoder: that damned office mill broke its tool corsel
04:50 AM XXCoder: it moved in tool corsel and out very roughly
04:50 AM XXCoder: that machine is a FORD machine
04:54 AM archivist_herron: office mill is for part time prototyping not 24 hour production
04:55 AM XXCoder: yeah thats what I told em
04:56 AM XXCoder: but it was already used to make 2 parts production type at shop that went under
05:08 AM XXCoder: its pretty nice machine for what its designed for
05:08 AM XXCoder: too bad we are abusing it!
05:29 AM jthornton: morning
05:30 AM XXCoder: hey jt
05:30 AM Phiplii: morningish
05:31 AM XXCoder: nightish
05:31 AM Phiplii: :)
05:31 AM XXCoder: whats up
05:35 AM Phiplii: iplayer radio has started trying to get me to sign in
05:36 AM Phiplii: I have double checked and no license needed for iplayer radio... but they're still doing odd things with it
05:38 AM archivist_herron: beeb is getting a bit nauseating that way
05:40 AM Phiplii: we don't have a license, so am always worried they'll screw up and report everyone using "iplayer" and forget to to differentiate between radio and tv
05:41 AM Phiplii: such an innocent until proven guilty attitude
05:41 AM Phiplii: * guilty<>innocent
05:41 AM XXCoder: lol
05:41 AM Phiplii: ssssh
05:42 AM Phiplii: week off. brain is in box on shelf
05:43 AM XXCoder: lol
05:43 AM jthornton: I didn't get anything done yesterday at all other than moving sorting
05:44 AM XXCoder: I didnt do much besides eat sleep and work
05:44 AM jthornton: no play?
05:44 AM Phiplii: I cut the lawn... went to pub... faffed with lathe
05:44 AM Phiplii: added NTP to chicken door :)
05:52 AM jthornton: and everyone is out of the coop
05:54 AM XXCoder: and now, the attack!
05:54 AM XXCoder: ;)
05:56 AM miss0r: FAK ! The sweet little machine vise I bought online, as already sold, and they refunded my money... Now the hunt continues
05:57 AM XXCoder: aw :(
06:01 AM miss0r: also: most articles are just throwing the word precision around like it was a colour
06:01 AM XXCoder: lol
06:01 AM XXCoder: aliexpress sure loves "high quality" also
06:01 AM XXCoder: they use it in every item there :P
06:03 AM * phipli picks at the crumbs on the chopping board...
06:03 AM phipli: kind of glad that turned out to be icing and not pig fat
06:03 AM phipli: they look quite similar when stuck to a chopping board
06:04 AM XXCoder: year old sour cream ;)
06:04 AM miss0r: wtf... How can you even be in doubt what is on there? :D
06:05 AM XXCoder: miss0r: welcome to my life. I cant smell lol
06:05 AM XXCoder: if I dont know what it is I dont eat it.
06:06 AM phipli: Well, yesterday we had cake
06:06 AM phipli: but the day before we had pork
06:06 AM phipli: I didn't see where the cake got cut
06:06 AM phipli: so there was a slight chance, but a risk worth taking, that it was pig
06:06 AM XXCoder: what if it was amixure? heh
06:07 AM XXCoder: yummy pig cake
06:07 AM phipli: might have been quite nice?
06:07 AM phipli: like bacon muffins
06:08 AM XXCoder: frosting covered bacon
06:09 AM phipli: well, you have honey glazed... same difference.
06:10 AM miss0r: I once deep dried bacon.. you know.. frying it, covering it with breadcrumbs and deepfrying it after...
06:10 AM miss0r: Both my mood and colesterol went up a nodge
06:11 AM phipli: not tried that
06:11 AM phipli: miss0r: are you Scottish?
06:11 AM XXCoder: take cooked bacon, deep fry it. deep fry it. deep fry it. freeze it. shatter it into small peices, mix it into beer in container with stick in it and freeze it
06:11 AM * miss0r can recommend it
06:11 AM XXCoder: yummy :P
06:12 AM miss0r: phipli: Why are you asking that? I am clearly not a native english speaker :ţ
06:12 AM miss0r: I'm from Denmark.
06:12 AM miss0r: less sagpipe & kilts, more beer
06:12 AM phipli: miss0r: nor are the Scotts :P
06:12 AM miss0r: one could argue that :)
06:13 AM phipli: miss0r: no, I'm messing
06:13 AM phipli: the Scottish have a reputation for deep frying everything
06:13 AM miss0r: 'round here we say that about the chinese
06:14 AM phipli: mainly because they invented the deep fat fried mars bar
06:14 AM miss0r: atleast the ones opending restaurants around here
06:14 AM XXCoder: deep fat fried deep fat fryer
06:14 AM XXCoder: I wonder how easy it is to speak that :P
06:15 AM miss0r: poor transman.. He is here to pick up the 'green trash' now... 3 days ago the misses had a little mishab with the freeser(forgetting to close the door). Long story short: in that trashcan is aprox 50 pounds of rotting flesh :D
06:15 AM phipli: one hell of a fire in London
06:16 AM XXCoder: yummy
06:16 AM miss0r: I guess I should've said 'meat' and not 'flesh'... sure - it is human, but when you use it for food, it should be considered meat.. right?... right?
06:17 AM phipli: tastes like port
06:17 AM phipli: *pork
06:17 AM phipli: ... I'm told
06:17 AM XXCoder: long pork
06:17 AM miss0r: YES... a friend of mine....
06:17 AM XXCoder: *pig
06:17 AM miss0r: err.. I was once told...
06:18 AM miss0r: Looking at this vise now: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Precision-Modular-Steel-Vise-Vice-CNC-5-125MM-FPZ125-DARMET-/162514126088
06:18 AM miss0r: But I am considering it is not a great idea with the seprated unit... Having to move the one end when you change the work size ect...
06:18 AM miss0r: also, the clamping force 'should' be alot smaller
06:19 AM XXCoder: looks rather specialist jaws
06:19 AM XXCoder: *vise
06:19 AM XXCoder: bet it is decent for certain uses
06:21 AM miss0r: I should think so. it has its uses... but I have clamps I can move around the millbed for larger peices...
06:21 AM miss0r: I still need to find a descent vise
06:22 AM XXCoder: no Kurt vises there?
06:22 AM XXCoder: its very common here at shops
06:22 AM miss0r: None in a descent shape for a descent price
06:22 AM XXCoder: shop I work at has probably 50 of em
06:22 AM miss0r: I would love this, in an 8" http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Precision-Toolmakers-Screwless-Vise-Vice-4-100MM-SPZB100-125-DARMET/162513611823?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIM.MBE%26ao%3D2%26asc%3D43782%26meid%3D07bb12e7c49147fa9a89ff7627d9691d%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D162514126088
06:22 AM miss0r: XXCoder: Soon they have 49, and I have one? :D
06:23 AM XXCoder: lol come over and try steal one :P
06:23 AM miss0r: lol
06:24 AM miss0r: just a bit spicy: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-Modular-Machine-Steel-Precision-Vise-Vice-6-Milling-150mm-FPZB-150-200-CNC-/162514125629
06:28 AM miss0r: I should just go ahead and make one myself....
06:29 AM XXCoder: got a grinder?
06:29 AM miss0r: yeah
06:29 AM miss0r: otherwise that project would become pretty hard
06:29 AM miss0r: heh
06:30 AM XXCoder: indeed lol
06:30 AM miss0r: but i'm somewhat limited. I only have 200x450 travel on the grinding bed... I will have to make do. Good excuse to fire up the oven, so I can harden it also
06:32 AM phipli: wouldn't it be easier to get your existing wonky ones straight, than to start from scratch?
06:33 AM miss0r: phipli: Not realy. that would be realy time consuming, as they are not constructed as straight forward
06:33 AM miss0r: I need to go pick up my new osiliscope.. I will be back later
06:37 AM XXCoder: later
06:38 AM phipli: bloody hell - a member of the public caught a baby thrown from the 9th or 10 floor
06:38 AM phipli: hell of a catch
06:42 AM XXCoder: what happened?
06:42 AM phipli: fire started on 4th floor
06:42 AM phipli: and spread /very/ quickly
06:43 AM phipli: alarm didn't go off
06:43 AM phipli: currently at least 6 dead, but it is going to be a lot higher
06:43 AM phipli: looks worse than City Point
06:43 AM phipli: (the last big residential incident we had that I can think of)
06:44 AM phipli: http://i2.wp.com/media.globalnews.ca/videostatic/473/838/London_fire_pkg_848x480_966863939673.jpg?w=670&quality=70&strip=all
06:45 AM phipli: sorry, Ronan Point was the previous one - wrong point.
06:49 AM phipli: ok - what was crap about Ronan Point was that it collapsed due to crap structure. Different thing
06:49 AM archivist_herron: going to be hard work counting
06:50 AM XXCoder: sucks :)
06:50 AM phipli: archivist_herron: what was it ~500 residents?
06:50 AM phipli: say... 75% there
06:50 AM phipli: 6 dead
06:51 AM phipli: 50 "injured" lets assume they count any smoke inhalation as "injured"
06:51 AM archivist_herron: they said 200+ this morning iirc
06:51 AM phipli: I'm going ballpark 300?
06:52 AM phipli: depends how many were there
06:52 AM archivist_herron: 120 flats
06:52 AM archivist_herron: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-40271723
06:57 AM sync: oh wow "which is still on fire" :D
06:57 AM phipli: dear government (what there is of it) : please legislate based on things like this, not statistically irrelevant, sensational things.
06:59 AM archivist_herron: sounds like the recent refurb was a cheap job
07:01 AM phipli: It is an interesting thing that in the rail industry we have really really strict fire requirements for everything
07:01 AM phipli: (biggest risk by a /long/ way is the passengers luggage)
07:01 AM phipli: but a tower block is a lot worse situation, but you can't do anything about it
07:02 AM phipli: because it would be "sorry, you can't store your clothes in the house unless they are 15 minute fire resistant and stored in a fire proof safe"
07:02 AM archivist_herron: the floor should be a fire stopper
07:02 AM phipli: and there should be active defence stuff
07:03 AM phipli: sprinklers, zoned alarms, escape routes
07:03 AM phipli: fire doors...
07:03 AM phipli: etc. etc.
07:03 AM phipli: someone is in for a lot of shit (and deserve it)
07:03 AM archivist_herron: fire doors need steel not just dense wood with a time rating
07:04 AM archivist_herron: I wonder if the refurb was upvc windows
07:04 AM phipli: they mentioned "improved" windows
07:05 AM phipli: do you guys do double glazing wooden windows?
07:05 AM phipli: with the crazy "not tested" 3" gap, or whatever it is these days
07:05 AM archivist_herron: I happen to be sitting at a window company
07:05 AM phipli: archivist_herron: why I asked :)
07:05 AM phipli: well, I didn't know you were sat there /atm/
07:06 AM archivist_herron: fighting the website css
07:06 AM phipli: My missus CSS's if you're looking for a consultant :)
07:06 AM phipli: although she mostly SQLs at the moment I think
07:06 AM archivist_herron: I am the consultant getting the cash!
07:06 AM phipli: :)
07:07 AM phipli: then...
07:07 AM phipli: archivist_herron: work that CSS! Teach it who is boss!
07:07 AM archivist_herron: I do get roped in for other things too
07:08 AM archivist_herron: google pagespeed is giving me a 92/100 for mobile now :)
07:08 AM archivist_herron: Anglian is 67 rofl
07:10 AM phipli: My placeholder homepage gets 91...
07:10 AM phipli: but then not really a surprise because it doesn't contain much
07:11 AM phipli: and what is there was generated by a crap tool to quickly fill the space
07:11 AM sync: well, a steel firedoor will also just have a time rating
07:11 AM archivist_herron: but longer than wood hopefully
07:12 AM archivist_herron: 2 hours for a 12 hour fire is a bit short
07:15 AM phipli: jthornton: Chicken door correctly "opened" this morning, and also the serial log shows that it checked its time over night properly.
07:15 AM sync: no archivist_herron
07:15 AM sync: fire doors are just there to enable people to get out
07:15 AM sync: not to save the building
07:15 AM sync: so 2h would be adequate
07:15 AM sync: even 15 mins would be ok
07:15 AM archivist_herron: well it s faile in this case!
07:16 AM archivist_herron: failed
07:17 AM phipli: this building went up "in minutes"
07:17 AM archivist_herron: if the concrete floors remained intact doors and windows are the source of fire moving from one to another probably
07:18 AM archivist_herron: I wonder if the stairs were open to all floors
07:19 AM phipli: hahahaha
07:19 AM sync: usually it is the insulation that conducts the fire up
07:19 AM sync: but that's ok, it takes a while to get in
07:19 AM phipli: I found the company that did the update's website
07:19 AM phipli: they've locked access to the grenfell part of their portfolio
07:19 AM phipli: their whole website infact
07:20 AM archivist_herron: the guilty hiding the evidence, oops
07:20 AM phipli: http://www.studioe.co.uk/
07:21 AM phipli: yeah. it was them
07:21 AM phipli: http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:gTRi1GBWI9sJ:www.studioe.co.uk/%3Fportfolio%3Dgrenfell+&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=uk
07:21 AM phipli: text right at the bottom - google cache ftw
07:21 AM archivist_herron: get the same forbidden on subdirectories too
07:21 AM phipli: archivist_herron: yeah - I started in the portfolio
07:21 AM archivist_herron: archive.org
07:21 AM phipli: yeah. hadn't got that far yet :)
07:24 AM phipli: Interesting
07:24 AM phipli: archive.org has only archived it once this year. did they go under?
07:25 AM archivist_herron: archive.org is a slow trawl at best
07:27 AM phipli: https://web-beta.archive.org/web/20170614061249/http://www.studioe.co.uk/?portfolio=grenfell
07:30 AM miss0r: My new Metrix DOX2100 just arrived :D.. well, i went and picked it up :D
07:31 AM phipli: fancy :)
07:31 AM miss0r: been waiting a while!
07:32 AM miss0r: And I got it for a steal: I only payed something like 500eur for it.
07:33 AM XXCoder: archive is like minnow in ocean 100 times bigger than earth ocean
07:49 AM miss0r: IT HAS A MATH FUNCTION!. you can't believe how long i've been waiting to get this
07:49 AM XXCoder: :)
07:51 AM archivist_herron: adjustable gain was hard?
07:51 AM miss0r: What are you getting at ? :)
07:51 AM archivist_herron: nothing. innocent whistle
08:11 AM phipli: hum. some post early, some late
08:34 AM JT-Shop: damn that's a bad fire
08:41 AM miss0r: what did you do?!
08:42 AM archivist_herron: miss0r, http://www.bbc.co.uk/news
08:44 AM miss0r: wow... That building is gonna collapse?
08:45 AM archivist_herron: depends how strong the concrete is after the fire
08:46 AM miss0r: yeah. Is that the 'bad part of town' ?
08:47 AM archivist_herron: much is being regenerated and refurbished as that was 2 years ago
08:48 AM archivist_herron: seems the company did a bad job
08:49 AM miss0r: or was payed by free masons to do it exactly like that
09:06 AM jthornton: phipli: nice, is that a simulated open?
09:58 AM phipli: jthornton: yeah - either need the motor coupler I ordered to arrive... or my tailstock to be aligned with my chuck :)
09:58 AM phipli: working on the latter atm.
09:58 AM phipli: Just finished putting the 60 deg angles on the edges on the gib strip
09:58 AM phipli: and started flattening the working surface
09:59 AM phipli: then I can check the face of the surface plate...
09:59 AM phipli: then I can check the alignment of the tailstock...
09:59 AM phipli: then I can...
09:59 AM JT-Shop: ...
10:00 AM phipli: work arising!
10:00 AM phipli: I know it wont go smoothly.
10:02 AM phipli: I was quite lucky with this piece of brass - really straight stock I used for the gib strip
10:04 AM phipli: hum. I've boiled the kettle twice today and still not had a cup of tea
10:04 AM * phipli goes to boil the kettle again
10:04 AM phipli: bloody postman bringing distractions
10:24 AM pink_vampire: hi all
10:24 AM pink_vampire: is there any benefit to roughing end mill over a regular flat end mill?
10:24 AM TurBoss: hello
10:26 AM cradek: yes they're much better at removing material
10:26 AM DrippityDrops: This is that servo tapping unit Im running with lcnc https://vimeo.com/221596530
10:26 AM cradek: and they last much longer than a finishing mill used for roughing
10:26 AM DrippityDrops: thought you all might enjoy
10:28 AM pink_vampire: what is a recommend roughing end mill size for a mill like the G0704?
10:38 AM cradek: is the spindle R8?
10:40 AM cradek: if so I'd probably try a 3/8, probably HSS, probably 3 flute
10:40 AM cradek: but I have no experience with a g0704
10:41 AM roycroft: i've used 18mm end mills on my g0603, which is the same class machine as the g0704
10:41 AM roycroft: 60463, rather
10:41 AM roycroft: g0463, dammit
10:42 AM jdh: I use 1/2" hss
10:42 AM jdh: for aluminum
10:42 AM roycroft: for most things, 1/2" hss is the biggest i use
10:43 AM roycroft: with those light machines, you want to do as much plunge cutting as possible
10:43 AM jdh: g0704 will chew through a surprising amount of material
10:43 AM pink_vampire: I'm using 11/16" end mill for roughing 6061
10:43 AM * roycroft mostly machines steel (90+% of the time)
10:45 AM jdh: my 1/2" is mainly based on having them handy
10:46 AM roycroft: i don't like changing collets all the time, so i try to use tooling that fits a 3/8" or 1/2" collet
10:46 AM roycroft: bigger tooling = shallower cut with those little mills
10:46 AM pink_vampire: me too
10:47 AM roycroft: so it doesn't really matter what size you use
10:47 AM roycroft: it's not going to save you time to use big tooling
10:47 AM pink_vampire: roycroft: I'm taking full length of the end mill
10:48 AM roycroft: i'd say experiment with a 1/2" end mill
10:48 AM roycroft: then use a 5/8" end mill
10:48 AM roycroft: and see what works best for you
10:48 AM roycroft: maybe try 3/8" as well
10:49 AM pink_vampire: roycroft: cut full depth in conventional then clean with climb http://i.imgur.com/Z0a5grd.png
10:50 AM pink_vampire: 11/16" 4F on the G0704 ^
10:58 AM DrippityDrops: I would assume it has more to do with how much cutter you are using at once and not really how much cutter you have.
11:02 AM DrippityDrops: 5/8 would be fine if you are facing the top of a part, however a 3/8 deep slot would be rather scary to attempt.
11:05 AM roycroft: that's what i was getting at earlier
11:05 AM roycroft: i can do about 0.010" passes when slotting with a 1/2" end mill
11:06 AM roycroft: makes slotting rather tedious work
11:06 AM roycroft: to the point that i got a power feed for my mill, even knowing i'd be doing a cnc conversion eventually
11:09 AM jdh: I did a 1/2" wide slot, 1" deep in 316 with mine. 3/8 4f, took a while.
11:13 AM roycroft: i was planning on finishing the cnc conversion early this summer, but now it looks like late summer
11:13 AM roycroft: i was originally planning on just cleaning up my lathe a bit and using it as is for a few months before doing a complete disassembly, cleanup, and refurbishment
11:14 AM roycroft: and that would have allowed me to do the turning on the ball screw ends for the mill
11:14 AM roycroft: but since the half nut is being problematic, i really need to fix that, and if i remove the saddle to do that i'm going to go ahead and do the complete refurbishment at that time
12:15 PM djdelorie: had a minute to test max speeds: 130 in/min for Y seem OK? This is unloaded (no spindle mounted), I just wanted to play with the technique
12:22 PM LeelooMinai: djdelorie: That's 55 mm/s in proper units. I can only tell you for comparison that 120 was maximum I could do in ideal conditions, but it's better to derate it for normal use.
12:22 PM LeelooMinai: With normal Chinese steppers at 64 microstaps.
12:23 PM LeelooMinai: djdelorie: You could also play with acceleration - it may have effect at stalling.
12:23 PM LeelooMinai: at=on*
12:23 PM djdelorie: that's derated to 70%, and accel is still way low
12:24 PM LeelooMinai: Hmm, ok - I would say it kind of normal I guess then - not stellar, but seems reasonable to me, since fromw hat I remember your thing was made from playwood?
12:25 PM LeelooMinai: ply*
12:25 PM djdelorie: and with a 1200 ozin stepper running at 4.4 out of 5 amps (should I set it to 5.1A instead of 4.4?)
12:25 PM djdelorie: yeah, plywood. I think the limiting factor is the 10 TPI leadscrew
12:25 PM djdelorie: and X axis can go much faster, 2 TPI lead :-)
12:26 PM LeelooMinai: Hmm, right, 10TPI is 2.5mm. My ballscrews are 5mm, so ok, seems good to me then.
12:26 PM IchGucksLive: hi
12:27 PM LeelooMinai: Don't know about the amps - probably running at max is more risky in terms of overheating.
12:27 PM LeelooMinai: So maybe 4.4 is reasonable.
12:28 PM djdelorie: they don't seem to be getting warm yet, but I haven't really given them a workout yet either
12:28 PM djdelorie: I'll keep it low for now :-)
12:28 PM IchGucksLive: best is to stay on the Amps that is i the datasheet
12:28 PM IchGucksLive: PEEK
12:28 PM djdelorie: datasheet says 5, I have a choice between 4.4 or 5.1 on the driver
12:29 PM LeelooMinai: djdelorie: You can always attach a temp probe to the stepper body and monitor if it's too hot.
12:29 PM IchGucksLive: is it a stepper
12:29 PM djdelorie: stepper
12:29 PM IchGucksLive: with 5A never seen that one
12:29 PM IchGucksLive: a N23
12:29 PM IchGucksLive: or 34
12:29 PM djdelorie: 34 - http://us.omc-stepperonline.com/dual-shaft-nema-34-cnc-stepper-motor-85nm1204ozin-34hs465004d-p-277.html
12:29 PM LeelooMinai: Right, 5 is quite a bit.
12:30 PM LeelooMinai: 34, probably that's why
12:30 PM LeelooMinai: Well, and that 1204 is quite monstrous...
12:31 PM IchGucksLive: why the hell do you need sutch big motors
12:31 PM LeelooMinai: djdelorie: What are you going to mill titanium? :)
12:31 PM djdelorie: it's about the same power as the servos I took out - they were rated 2.8 continuous, 8A peak
12:31 PM IchGucksLive: on 11mA you need 72 V to get it on 20RPM Second
12:31 PM IchGucksLive: 11mH
12:31 PM djdelorie: wood - it has to carry a heavy router and move quickly
12:31 PM LeelooMinai: Holy crap - that stepper weigths 3.6kg:)
12:32 PM IchGucksLive: i run a 800kg XYZ on Nema23 2A
12:32 PM djdelorie: biab - work calls ;-)
12:32 PM IchGucksLive: it has a 30:1 gear
12:32 PM IchGucksLive: rack pinion
12:33 PM LeelooMinai: djdelorie: If you crash with those steppers they will probably make your plywood frame into a precel:p
12:33 PM phipli: yay! cross slide fixed :)
12:33 PM phipli: turns out it is about three hours later than I thought it was though. Missus came home
12:34 PM roycroft: time flies when you're making chips
12:34 PM IchGucksLive: 8.5Nm that is a hell of a force
12:34 PM IchGucksLive: that may twist your 1605
12:36 PM LeelooMinai: Dynamic pitch change
12:36 PM LeelooMinai: Hmm, that's an idea...
01:08 PM IchGucksLive: im off tonight we got clear sky and a big event on Asto
01:08 PM IchGucksLive: and tomorrow the Harvest starts with about 25 tractors so lets have some fun
01:09 PM IchGucksLive: ;-) GN(
01:16 PM JT-Shop: well that was an interesting visit to the factory I used to work at...
01:18 PM skunkworks: recognize anyone
01:19 PM JT-Shop: yes quite a few of the old workers are still there, looks like some good work coming up too :)
01:23 PM skunkworks: Great! is this brigs?
01:24 PM JT-Shop: there was one guy I didn't remember and one that didn't remember me till they said my name
01:24 PM JT-Shop: no, at the worlds larges nail manufacturer under one roof
01:24 PM JT-Shop: largest
01:48 PM * LeelooMinai looks at news and blinks
01:52 PM LeelooMinai: That is bad - my first reaction was "what have you don man!", but he is dead, so does not care:/
02:30 PM phipli: JT-Shop: general photos - including the now re-installed gibstrip. http://gallery.elephantandchicken.co.uk/
02:30 PM phipli: put the previous photos there while I was at it.
02:31 PM * archivist recommends real html
02:32 PM * phipli doesn't have time to learn html
02:35 PM archivist: http://www.collection.archivist.info/archive/grabs/Screenshot-52.png
02:36 PM archivist: does not fail gracefully
02:36 PM phipli: how old /is/ your browser archivist? :)
02:37 PM phipli: can I recommend lynx, it might be more compatible? :p
02:37 PM archivist: remember I test on old to make sure my stuff just works for anybody
02:38 PM archivist: not a select few microsoft users
02:39 PM * phipli is not a windows user
02:40 PM archivist: this line in the page source <link rel="shortcut icon" href="//ilostatic.one.com/iloapp/gallery/images/favicon.ico" type="image/vnd.microsoft.icon"/>
02:41 PM archivist: a google seems to say it is a flash server of some sort
02:44 PM phipli: favicon is the icon that appears next to the URL bar?
02:44 PM phipli: actually, on modern browsers it is on the tab isn't it
02:46 PM archivist: you can see the favicon on my screen grab, about the only bit that worked
02:46 PM roycroft: a friend recommended some of this for better etching results, and i ordered a roll:
02:46 PM roycroft: http://www.pcbfx.com/main_site/pages/products/toner_foils.html
02:54 PM LeelooMinai: roycroft: Do you have me on ignore?
02:55 PM phipli: archivist: Had a thought - do you have javascript turned off?
02:55 PM LeelooMinai: Seems he does. Can someone tell him to check out Oracal vinyl method for toner transfer?
02:55 PM archivist: no hence seeing the circle in the middle
02:56 PM archivist: phipli, the w3c validator complains about the iframe
02:56 PM LeelooMinai: That foil he linked is overpriced in comparison and not better.
02:58 PM archivist: phipli, when I view the page source there is no obvious ling to any particular data, there is so little js on the page
02:59 PM archivist: link
03:02 PM archivist: view source of page http://www.collection.archivist.info/archive/mirror/phipli/gallery.elephantandchicken.co.uk.txt
03:02 PM archivist: there is no content there
03:03 PM phipli: Works from firefox 9 and newer
03:03 PM archivist: well I use 3.6
03:04 PM phipli: heh
03:05 PM archivist: there is nothing obvious to me how that source can access data specific to the domain it came from
03:06 PM sync: firefox, 3.6, wow
03:07 PM sync: there is no reason to use that in 2017
03:07 PM phipli: only the bit in <script> matters
03:07 PM phipli: sync - it is only 7 years older. I have cans of beans older.
03:08 PM archivist: I do have have data from other domains switched off to strop any cross site scripting, as all people protecting themselves should
03:08 PM eeriegeek: his site is actually being delivered from one.com
03:08 PM eeriegeek: a web hosting service
03:08 PM archivist: cross site error
03:10 PM sync: I'd be ok with it not working on 0.03% of all browsers
03:10 PM archivist: any sensible person will be switching off cross site scripting
03:35 PM JT-Shop: phipli: I sent the link to me down in the beer cave, I'll look in the morning
03:40 PM phipli: sure thing
04:07 PM JT-Shop: I did find code to determine if it is DST or not from the date
04:08 PM JT-Shop: crumb... forgot to look for the battery
04:12 PM roycroft: you should look into a poop-powered controller
04:13 PM roycroft: you have plenty of that
04:15 PM JT-Shop: lol steam powered from buring poop
04:17 PM XXCoder: wow http://www.bbc.com/news/health-40260029
04:17 PM XXCoder: JT-Shop: new arctype: poop steampunk
04:18 PM JT-Shop: lol
04:33 PM FinboySlick: XXCoder: But that could mean the Jersey Shore would lose its wonderful orange tint.
04:39 PM phipli: XXCoder: I could do with that drug
04:39 PM phipli: I'm half Irish and allergic to the sun
04:39 PM phipli: I only last about 15 minutes longer than your average vampire
04:47 PM Deejay: gn8
04:54 PM Roguish: hey all. anyone know if the Tormach lathes are ok?
04:54 PM JT-Shop: hola
04:57 PM Roguish: waz up?
04:58 PM JT-Shop: might have a lot of work coming up at a place I used to work for
04:58 PM Roguish: cool. friend or foe, get the dough.
04:58 PM JT-Shop: lol
04:58 PM Roguish: 2 primary questions: how much, and when?
04:59 PM JT-Shop: most of the stuff I designed and built is still running strong
04:59 PM JT-Shop: got to quote an indexer and they are looking for a PLC type guy as a backup for some robots
05:01 PM Roguish: my induction heat treater had a problem. the coil sprung a leak at a braze joint.
05:01 PM JT-Shop: ouch, back to the drawing board?
05:02 PM JT-Shop: do you do any scada stuff?
05:02 PM Roguish: well, some parts went back to Rochester NY to the factory for check out. probably 2 weeks delay.
05:02 PM Roguish: no scada here. unfortunately.
05:45 PM JT-Shop: other than the heater did it work ok?
05:50 PM Roguish: pretty much. my drive system was ok. cooling systems worked. we got heat and were just starting to adjust things.when is leaked.
05:50 PM JT-Shop: cool
05:50 PM Roguish: it's 45kW
05:51 PM Roguish: like 100amps of 480v
05:51 PM JT-Shop: I spend a couple of hours touring a plant I used to work at and they want me to quote on some projects
05:51 PM JT-Shop: that's hot :)
06:01 PM * JT-Shop goes to bait the Hav-a-heart...
06:10 PM MacGalempsy: hello
06:11 PM LeelooMinai: ..ello ..llo.. lo ..o
06:12 PM MacGalempsy: everyone must be busy cnc'ing
06:20 PM jthornton: cooking tacos here
06:20 PM Tom_itx: eating them here
06:21 PM LeelooMinai: I am replacing storm door. What is the name for the thing-metal pieces around it that go onto the door casing? I need to replace those too, but cannot find anything looking similar in Home Depot:/
06:21 PM LeelooMinai: thing=thin
06:22 PM Tom_itx: mine came with the new door
06:22 PM LeelooMinai: Right, the new door I have is just a door - the weird PCV one too.
06:23 PM LeelooMinai: I just cut it with circular saw to size - cuts nicely, but tons of little snow-like pieces that stick to everything:/
06:24 PM LeelooMinai: But it kind of answers my question how this stuff will mill on CNC - probably well, but I better have some brutal vacuum connected.
06:25 PM dioz: anyone know what the constant .0078 relates to?
06:25 PM dioz: LeelooMinai: help me.
06:26 PM dioz: i'm attempting to calculate bend allowance
06:26 PM Tom_itx: for what?
06:26 PM LeelooMinai: dioz: But you are a troll - why would I help you now:p
06:26 PM Tom_itx: we did ~2-3 deg for hydroblocks
06:26 PM dioz: ba = (.01743 * radius) + (.0078 * thickness) * angle of the bend in degrees
06:27 PM dioz: .01744 is pi/180
06:27 PM dioz: idk what .0078 is
06:28 PM dioz: LeelooMinai: thought i'd give a chance to flex you mighty brain power. our last few encounters you haven't looked very smart
06:28 PM dioz: ;)
06:29 PM MacGalempsy: ba?
06:29 PM LeelooMinai: dioz: "That's like your opinion, man"
06:29 PM Tom_L: https://www.hawkridgesys.com/blog/sheet-metal-understanding-k-factor/
06:29 PM dioz: MacGalempsy: bend allowance
06:29 PM roycroft: it's sushi night for me
06:29 PM dioz: so if i'm twisting up a 1/4 in piece of mild steel
06:30 PM dioz: with a k value of 30%
06:30 PM dioz: to a 32 degree inside bend
06:30 PM LeelooMinai: Then you should be a strongman competotor:p
06:30 PM MacGalempsy: just had a whole cow come back from the butcher
06:30 PM dioz: i know how mucb extra steel i'm gonna need
06:30 PM andypugh: My carb just fell off! https://goo.gl/photos/cKVtjsL5NPQsL2Mg7
06:31 PM dioz: i just dunno what the constant that's associated with the thickness is.
06:31 PM Tom_itx: MacGalempsy, they couldn't catch it?
06:31 PM LeelooMinai: dioz: You see - ironically internet google/research skills would help you here:)
06:32 PM MacGalempsy: Tom_itx they caught it and sent it back in little packages
06:32 PM Tom_L: andy that page failed to load here
06:32 PM MacGalempsy: andypugh: machine or cast the replacement part?
06:32 PM LeelooMinai: It looks cast
06:33 PM Tom_L: wait.. there we go. it had to cross the ocean
06:33 PM andypugh: Lucky I have a fair bit of equipment, https://goo.gl/photos/U6Yj83iwgUpb5hiw6
06:33 PM MacGalempsy: at least its a modular part
06:33 PM andypugh: Took about an hour to fix, which is a lot better than it could have been. https://goo.gl/photos/tnXix3dFHtc7CvN36
06:33 PM LeelooMinai: andypugh: I thought you will 3D print it from ABS:p
06:34 PM X704 is now known as tiwake
06:34 PM MacGalempsy: lost print method of casting ;)
06:35 PM andypugh: I am meant to be riding it saturday and 70 miles on Sunday…
06:36 PM Tom_L: andy, was that a problem spot on those?
06:36 PM andypugh: Not one I have heard of
06:37 PM Tom_L: just too much hot rodding...
06:37 PM andypugh: It looks like the casting core moved, the spigot was paper-thin at the bottom.
06:38 PM andypugh: https://goo.gl/photos/qkh5ykbFGa6wxN3o6
06:38 PM Tom_L: ohhh
06:38 PM andypugh: But it has lasted 96 years like that…
06:38 PM LeelooMinai: Wow, fail
06:38 PM Tom_L: no sign of someone trying to polish the port?
06:39 PM Tom_L: kinda what it looks like
06:40 PM andypugh: On this bike. very unlikely
06:40 PM Tom_L: :)
06:42 PM andypugh: Who was it hwre who bought an Instrumments 01 measurment pen?
06:44 PM andypugh: They promised 3D curve capture “in the spring” and it looks like they will manage it with one day spare.
06:44 PM sync: andypugh: the bastard stopped working again? :D
06:44 PM * LeelooMinai has no idea what that is
06:45 PM andypugh: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OLpEFJ6TECw
06:46 PM sync: isn't that more typical of BSAs?
06:46 PM roycroft: what's the resolution of that thing?
06:46 PM Tom_L: dioz, http://sheetmetal.me/formulas-and-functions/bend-allowance/
06:48 PM andypugh: Hmm, that video doesn’t show the new ability to trace 3D curves in space.
06:48 PM LeelooMinai: andypugh: ... I don't know...
06:48 PM roycroft: you'll find out about that on tuesday next
06:49 PM andypugh: Well, they _showed_ it back in November when I bought one. And then found it didn’t do what I wanted.
06:50 PM LeelooMinai: andypugh: My first thought is that I would not trust anything that needs to roll and you don't know if it skipped or not.
06:51 PM andypugh: There are _machine tools_ that rely on a steel wheel running on the table.
06:51 PM LeelooMinai: Doesn't seem to be a precise instrument.
06:51 PM andypugh: It’s not a mircometer, that’s for sure.
06:51 PM LeelooMinai: Yes, but this tool is supposed to be generic - used on any sirface.
06:52 PM LeelooMinai: If you have slippery surface, you are sol imo.
06:52 PM LeelooMinai: So you can as well use $5 tape mesure...
06:53 PM LeelooMinai: So my impression is borderline "gizmo" - or "meh".
06:53 PM LeelooMinai: And I say that being a bit of a sucker for high-tech measuring tools:)
06:53 PM andypugh: It’s a gadget.
06:54 PM LeelooMinai: Right, gadget/gizmo imo
06:54 PM sync: I prefer my laser scanner
06:54 PM andypugh: But it should be able to measure curves in 3D space soon, and that’s something a tape measure won’t di.
06:54 PM andypugh: (do)
06:55 PM LeelooMinai: I guess for this it could be more useful. If someone needs that for some reason.
06:55 PM roycroft: any tailor who measures women's bosoms would take issue with you on that
06:56 PM sync: http://sync-hv.de/projects/cimcore/tasskaff.png measuring coffee mugs in space ;)
06:56 PM LeelooMinai: Basically like one of those measuring wheels they use.
06:56 PM LeelooMinai: On the other hand, I don't know why they use them - unless they also want to measure all the pits in the ground on the way...
06:58 PM andypugh: https://www.engadget.com/2016/12/07/instrumments-01-pen-pro-app-update/ has a video showing the 3D thing.
06:58 PM andypugh: Though given that that was 8 months ago before they had written the software, I think it might be a “dramatisation” and time will see if it actually works at all.
06:59 PM LeelooMinai: andypugh: It is using some kind of gyroscope or what they are called for this?
06:59 PM LeelooMinai: Like a gyro IC?
07:00 PM andypugh: I think it probably just integrates the output of an accelerometer.
07:00 PM andypugh: Though that can work surprisingly well.
07:00 PM LeelooMinai: Well, from that "face profile" scan, I don't see how it can know the contour...
07:01 PM LeelooMinai: You think only be speed changes on curves?
07:01 PM andypugh: It knows the linear distance from the roller, and knows the path of the axis from the accelermeter. That’s enough information, I think.
07:02 PM andypugh: And it can (probably) tell if you are rotating the pen olong it’s axis or not.
07:02 PM LeelooMinai: Hmm, ok, weird - probably precision is horrible though.
07:02 PM andypugh: I wanted it for getting starting curves for old vehicle parts.
07:03 PM LeelooMinai: I don't have good feeling about this to be honest.
07:03 PM andypugh: I wouldn’t be surprised if it turned out to be rubbish :-)
07:03 PM andypugh: Anyway…
07:03 PM andypugh: Time to sleep.
07:04 PM LeelooMinai: Seem to me this is overcomplicated compromise before someone finally makes the real thing. Which is a way to get 3D coordinates of a point in space.
07:04 PM LeelooMinai: With high precision and in a compact form.
07:04 PM LeelooMinai: This will change a lot of thing - I think I mentioned it once already.
07:08 PM SpeedEvil: Accellerometers drift some kilometers in a few minutes, for available accellerometers.
07:08 PM sync: LeelooMinai: they already exist, they are just not really cheap
07:08 PM LeelooMinai: sync: Yes, so they as well may not exist:)
07:08 PM sync: huh?
07:09 PM sync: just because you don't want to spend 80k doesn't mean people who need them won't spend that
07:09 PM LeelooMinai: I mean for it to revolutionise things like input devices, etc. It has to be very acurate, compact and also not expansive obviously.
07:12 PM sync: well, no
07:12 PM LeelooMinai: sync: I meant on Earth - not sure on other planets:p
07:13 PM sync: if you need 1/100mm resolution on 3d scans, you'll have to pay for it, currently
07:13 PM sync: but the market is quite big
07:13 PM sync: so people are buying them
07:14 PM sync: because they save their cost in time very quickly
07:14 PM LeelooMinai: I mean consumer market, not some industrial one.
07:15 PM LeelooMinai: Hmm, I wonder if replacing whole door frame is a good idea...
07:15 PM LeelooMinai: Anyone did that (for entry door) here?
07:18 PM kyle____: hello everyone
07:19 PM Tom_itx: LeelooMinai, i've done that too
07:19 PM * LeelooMinai looks sadly at Home Depot description on PVC door jamb: Material: Vinyl, Termite Resistant: Yes, Wood Species: Pine
07:20 PM LeelooMinai: Tom_itx: You would say it's a tricky job or rather easy?
07:20 PM Tom_itx: should have gotten a good door
07:20 PM Tom_itx: depends how handy you are
07:20 PM LeelooMinai: I mean the whole frame of the front door - I wonder if I could use those PVC boards instead of wood...
07:20 PM Tom_itx: i wouldn't
07:21 PM LeelooMinai: Why?
07:21 PM Tom_itx: i used wood
07:22 PM LeelooMinai: Right, well, from what I read, that PCV has many advantages - does not rot, is much better at insulating, not expensive, does not need painting.
07:23 PM Tom_itx: does not hold up in sunlight
07:23 PM LeelooMinai: Water does nothing to it too.
07:23 PM LeelooMinai: Hmm, not 100% sure, but I read it will not change color in sunlight.
07:24 PM Tom_itx: i put in replacement windows too and the ones in the sun aren't performing as i would expect they should
07:24 PM LeelooMinai: "Lifetime Never Rot Warranty. Warranted 10 year UV coating."
07:24 PM LeelooMinai: https://www.homedepot.ca/en/home/p.door-frame-kit.1000127786.html
07:24 PM Tom_itx: i think you should use it then
07:25 PM LeelooMinai: If only I knew if covers the entire door, but of course home depot descriptions are lame...
07:28 PM kyle____: UV does discolor PVC
07:28 PM kyle____: but that's about it
07:28 PM kyle____: it just turns yellow on the surface
07:29 PM kyle____: the UV coating is probably latex paint...?
07:30 PM LeelooMinai: Well, I have PVC screen door bought - I did not see any paint on it. It's built from boards that are hard on the surface and get granulated inside.
07:30 PM kyle____: nah, it's probably not then
07:30 PM tiwake: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3ssad0qZuU
07:30 PM kyle____: dunno how you're supposed to put a coating on something you're meant to cut though
07:32 PM LeelooMinai: kyle: When you cut, yes, you expose the inner core, but, that's usually not a problem if you deal with boards - you just cute them to size to form a frame, etc. so ok.
07:33 PM LeelooMinai: The door I cut at the hinge side, so that's not a problem too - the inner core is still pretty hard, just not as dence and shiny.
07:33 PM LeelooMinai: dense*
07:33 PM LeelooMinai: You can put a scew there, etc.
