12:24 AM Crom: Router fell off... took a bit to get it going again
12:39 AM TurBoss: Hell
12:39 AM TurBoss: o
12:39 AM TurBoss: *hello
12:39 AM TurBoss: I have a spindle motor tha has a potentiometer
12:40 AM TurBoss: can I hack it to control with a DAC?
12:56 AM TurBoss: sry have to reboot
01:05 AM * TurBoss is back
01:08 AM Crom: oops unplugged my rpi3
01:45 AM IchGucksLive: morning from germany
01:45 AM IchGucksLive: TurBoss: still on
01:47 AM IchGucksLive: TurBoss: the prtentiometer makes a Voltige devider so it may produce 0-10V or -10/+10V 0-5V
01:48 AM IchGucksLive: there is a PWM to analog just a view parts or 5USD to bye even simple BOB have a 0-10V out you can go direct
01:48 AM IchGucksLive: to bet you spindle controled by PWM
01:49 AM IchGucksLive: im off to school BYE till later
02:21 AM Deejay: moin
04:52 AM XXCoder: yo
05:15 AM XXCoder: aw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PrPajlIsKd0 thats cool
05:15 AM XXCoder: ducks enter water lake for first time. from bad hoarder case.
05:53 AM jthornton: morning
05:54 AM XXCoder: hey
05:54 AM XXCoder: brass rods arrived
05:54 AM XXCoder: so I can evenually test my $27 lathe see if it can even mark those LOL
05:55 AM jthornton: video that for sure
05:56 AM XXCoder: yeah
05:56 AM XXCoder: though plan wood first learn how to use it
05:57 AM jthornton: just about got my chicken run finished
05:58 AM XXCoder: cool
05:58 AM jthornton: gotta hurry up and build the coop
05:59 AM XXCoder: I had idea of using 3d printer heated bed setup for hatching eggs lol\
05:59 AM jthornton: the run is pvc frame with chicken wire over it
05:59 AM XXCoder: not that I plan to
06:00 AM jthornton: need 99.5F at 60% humidity to hatch chicken eggs
06:02 AM XXCoder: easily doable I guess lol
06:06 AM jthornton: dang going to rain this afternoon and I need to get some yard and garden work done
06:06 AM XXCoder: here it always rain each time I need to mow
06:06 AM XXCoder: then in summer theres nary a cloud
06:07 AM jthornton: the parts I mow are full of branches from the winter
06:08 AM jthornton: most of the property is woods with trails and a couple of open areas that I mow
06:09 AM XXCoder: theres branch on grass from large evergreen
06:09 AM XXCoder: its still green.
06:09 AM XXCoder: been months
06:10 AM jthornton: maybe it put down some roots
06:11 AM XXCoder: evergreens dont do that if I recall
06:11 AM XXCoder: just tough bastard
06:14 AM Hawku: XXCoder: $27 lathe?
06:14 AM XXCoder: yeah
06:14 AM Hawku: from china? :D
06:15 AM XXCoder: normal price is $80 to 120
06:15 AM XXCoder: there was a big sale lol
06:15 AM Hawku: nice
06:16 AM XXCoder: yeah
06:18 AM XXCoder: its pretty weak
06:18 AM XXCoder: it is essentally drill engine chuck on router cnc bed
06:19 AM Hawku: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Mini-Lathe-Beads-Machine-Woodworking-DIY-Lathe-Polishing-Cutting-Mini-Drill-Rotary-Tool-Standard-Set-with/32524261064.html
06:20 AM Hawku: like that?
06:20 AM XXCoder: yeah
06:20 AM XXCoder: that is actually slightlu better version
06:21 AM Hawku: are you going to CNC that? :D
06:21 AM XXCoder: dunno lol I do have ballscrews from first cnc router project :P
06:28 AM jthornton: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0YNxqLU2xgs
06:53 AM chopper79: jthornton: I have always wanted to build one of those. Right now I have a large bucket that holded 55lbs of feed and the feed goes down a vertical pvc with a Y on the end. Keeps the feed down there and as they eat it the bowl refills.
06:54 AM jthornton: do they pitch some out of the bowl?
06:54 AM jthornton: I'm thinking of building something like this http://www.backyardchickens.com/a/building-a-treadle-chicken-feeder
06:55 AM jthornton: for a feeder
06:55 AM chopper79: Yeah...also they are free range 95% of the time so are eating bugs and other cool things.
06:55 AM chopper79: I throw scratch out for them also aroudn the yard.
06:56 AM chopper79: Our clutch just hatched this weekend. Got new babay chicks in the brooder right now.
06:56 AM jthornton: my neighbor chickens free range at my place lol
06:56 AM jthornton: I put out a nest box and get an egg from time to time
06:56 AM chopper79: lol
06:58 AM jthornton: I need to get the coop built quick, they are getting too big for the plastic box they are in
07:17 AM chopper79: Working on a coop this weekend for the turkeys myself.
07:45 AM _methods: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IzUoe-9bKa0
07:45 AM _methods: that can't be safe
07:46 AM Tom_L: he looks like a bright one though...
07:46 AM _methods: no pun intended
07:46 AM _methods: lol
08:01 AM gregcnc: https://www.desktopmetal.com two different metal printing systems look interesting their production system looks like vaporware
08:02 AM _methods: i thought they had working systems?
08:02 AM _methods: ah yeah they production system
08:03 AM _methods: s/they/the
08:17 AM enleth: KUKA KR200 on its way from the seller, shoud arrive tomorrow
08:17 AM enleth: *should
08:22 AM JT-Shop: friendly web host person copy and pasted my spyderstore to my mesa store so mesaus.com brought up the spyder store too what fun
08:45 AM Gene_home: how much for the kuka?
09:10 AM * JT-Shop went to weed wack around the nest box feeding station and the weed wacker would not start and a chicken decided to get in the nest and lay an egg
09:37 AM {HD}: Can I reference a serial port as I do a parallel port 0xCCE8? Or do I have to use ttyS0 and ttyS1?
09:53 AM cradek: {HD}: what are you trying to do?
09:54 AM {HD}: cradek: it seems my serial ports are not working as expected or at all. I just wanted to try and alternate way to reference them to see what the issue is.
09:54 AM cradek: do they show up in dmesg after a fresh boot?
09:55 AM {HD}: Yes
09:55 AM cradek: in what way are they not working as expected?
09:56 AM {HD}: The devices I had previously working on an old computer do not seem to be responding using the serial ports on this new computer.
09:56 AM {HD}: I should check Amazon/eBay for a serial port diagnostic tool.
09:57 AM cradek: what devices? responding to what?
10:00 AM {HD}: It's a VFD attempting to communicate over 232 to 485. I've checked the config files 100 times for errors and they seem to be perfect. I've also tried opening a serial terminal and shorting pins two and three with no success.
10:03 AM cradek: for the short-2-and-3 test I'd try `screen /dev/ttyS0 clocal'
10:04 AM archivist_herron: people usually forget the handshake modes and pins
10:04 AM cradek: how does your serial port show up in dmesg?
10:05 AM cradek: archivist: yes - setting the clocal stty flag should ignore them all
10:05 AM archivist_herron: then lost characters :)
10:05 AM cradek: for a test by shorting pins 2 and 3
10:06 AM CaptHindsight: he has a 1 RPP and 2 serial version of this card: http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?WCH
10:06 AM CaptHindsight: 1 EPP
10:06 AM {HD}: http://dpaste.com/3FS0JVF
10:07 AM cradek: ah, so not traditional serial ports
10:07 AM cradek: showing up in dmesg is a really good sign
10:07 AM {HD}: I am not running a card with the CH382L chip on it.
10:08 AM cradek: ok what is your hardware?
10:08 AM {HD}: It is not a mobo serial...it is a pci
10:08 AM {HD}: I think its a CH353?
10:08 AM CaptHindsight: ^^ has also built the Linux drivers from the vendor
10:09 AM {HD}: CaptHindsight: Not anymore
10:09 AM {HD}: This is a fresh install
10:09 AM {HD}: Using default kernel drivers
10:09 AM cradek: that's good that they show up with default kernel drivers
10:09 AM cradek: (still, these kinds of cards rarely work right)
10:09 AM cradek: did you do the test I proposed
10:09 AM {HD}: let me grab a paperclip and try that command
10:10 AM cradek: cool
10:10 AM CaptHindsight: http://www.wch.cn/product/CH353.html
10:11 AM CaptHindsight: drivers http://www.wch.cn/download/CH35XDRV_ZIP.html
10:12 AM {HD}: cradek: Ok, I installed screen and tried it...I just get a solid cursor in terminal...no output/input possible.
10:13 AM cradek: with the pins shorted it doesn't echo your keystrokes?
10:13 AM {HD}: I cannot even ctrl c out of it.
10:13 AM cradek: are you sure you are shorting the right pins 2 and 3?
10:13 AM cradek: control-A x
10:13 AM {HD}: cradek: Yea,,,
10:13 AM cradek: er control-a k
10:14 AM cradek: the card has two-row .1" headers? how are you getting from that to a DB9 connector?
10:16 AM {HD}: https://www.amazon.com/Sienoc-Serial-Parallel-Printer-Computer/dp/B00XBX05V2/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1493217954&sr=8-6&keywords=serial+parallel+card
10:16 AM cradek: ok those pigtails came with it?
10:17 AM {HD}: Yep
10:18 AM cradek: you're shorting 2 and 3 according to the teeny tiny numbers printed on the plastic inside the DB9?
10:20 AM {HD}: Yes, I am using a genderchanger so I can stick a paperclip in there too...I tested with a continuity tester to make sure it was indeed shorting the correct pin holeso nthe other side.
10:20 AM cradek: hmm it does sound like it doesn't work then
10:20 AM cradek: I was hoping you were missing something
10:21 AM cradek: can you use a usb to serial converter instead? those are often less terrible.
10:21 AM {HD}: cradek: one of the odd parts is the par port works...
10:21 AM CaptHindsight: are you sure you are testing the right serial port? There are 2 on the board
10:21 AM cradek: that's a good thought
10:21 AM CaptHindsight: have you shorted pins 2-3 of both ports?
10:21 AM {HD}: CaptHindsight: I am trying with both ports and both s0 and s1
10:22 AM CaptHindsight: have to ask since we aren't in the room there
10:22 AM {HD}: I should look for a hobby cnc meetup group...lol...come fix my machine!
10:22 AM CaptHindsight: debugging hardware is usually easier when it's in front of you
10:22 AM cradek: what's a voltmeter read on pins 2-to-5 and 3-to-5?
10:25 AM CaptHindsight: there is a mention of needing to use setserial to get these XScale serials ports to work
10:25 AM CaptHindsight: http://www.electronicsfaq.com/2010/02/getting-serial-port-to-work-under.html
10:26 AM {HD}: 2-5 is mv and 3-5 is 11v
10:26 AM {HD}: i think
10:28 AM cradek: good sign, not totally broken hardware
10:29 AM {HD}: well, shit...I would rather it was broken
10:29 AM {HD}: then I just replace it and try again.
10:29 AM cradek: can you use usb?
10:29 AM {HD}: I have usb ports...
10:29 AM {HD}: lol
10:30 AM {HD}: no usb-232-485 adapter yet.
10:30 AM cradek: yeah I mean usb to serial
10:30 AM cradek: or a computer with real serial ports?
10:30 AM cradek: often one is hidden on a header on the motherboard
10:31 AM {HD}: cradek: There is a header on the mobo but it is a dell proprierty thing I dont have a tail for...
10:31 AM MacGalempsy: hola
10:31 AM {HD}: I also have a parallax USBto232 in a box somewhere...let me find that.
10:35 AM {HD}: found it...now I need to find a microusb cable...
10:37 AM CaptHindsight: ^^ had to use setserial to get that board working
10:38 AM {HD}: CaptHindsight: You have a Parallax USBto232? I am about to plug it in...
10:39 AM CaptHindsight: I have several USB2serial but not sure where the Parallax one is
10:39 AM {HD}: http://dpaste.com/3F1C2X8
10:39 AM {HD}: Does that seem good?
10:40 AM {HD}: ttyUSB0?
10:40 AM CaptHindsight: ah so it's a FTDI
10:41 AM cradek: yeah that'll just work
10:42 AM cradek: screen /dev/ttyUSB0 clocal
10:57 AM {HD}: cradek: Well, screen does somthing.
10:57 AM {HD}: I type 'hello world' and hit enter and my cursor gets reset to beginning of line but the text remains
10:58 AM {HD}: At least it does something....
11:00 AM {HD}: alright let me build this config with ttyUSB0 and make sure it works.
11:02 AM {HD}: Is anyone running a 64bit OS with RTAI and machine control sucessfully?
11:03 AM cradek: {HD}: that's normal and correct. control-j would move it down.
11:03 AM {HD}: cradek: Well, at least I have a solution for now! I would like to get a usb-485 adapter at some point.
11:04 AM {HD}: Well, thanks for the help thus far...I am off for some lunch!
11:23 AM McBride36 is now known as Guest30408
11:54 AM codepython777: http://www.ebay.com/itm/162100870829 - anyone can tell me how to get this cheaper?
11:55 AM codepython777: Or perhaps an alternative?
11:55 AM cradek: do you have a lathe?
11:55 AM cradek: or use all-thread and nuts?
11:55 AM codepython777: cradek: unfortunately not
11:56 AM cradek: I don't even understand what that is. does it have threaded holes on the ends?
11:57 AM codepython777: yes it does
11:57 AM codepython777: I've to put two separate layers of steel at a distance
11:57 AM gregcnc: turned and anodized, at retail, could it be any cheaper?
11:57 AM cradek: not really
11:59 AM archivist: description lacking
11:59 AM miek: codepython777: click the "make offer" button :p
12:14 PM * Loetmichel just had a bit of spare time today and decided to clean up his messy desk. Result: Russian co-worker is already complaining: "now that you have a clean desk boss will come to me and say "Michaels desk is clean, now its your turn!" ... I retortet with "yep, and with good reason!" ;) -> http://www.cyrom.org/palbum/main.php?g2_itemId=16574&g2_imageViewsIndex=1
12:26 PM DaViruz: do you have a picture of your desk as well?
12:41 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
12:43 PM {HD}: Yea, where is the other desk?
12:44 PM IchGucksLive: hi all
12:49 PM Crom: morning
12:55 PM IchGucksLive: the examinas here in Germany are in progress and 4 new schools with there commisioners where interestet in new CNC rooms
12:55 PM IchGucksLive: so i must work till i R.I.P
12:56 PM IchGucksLive: so i must bevor build my own Gravestone engraver
12:58 PM Crom: it's gonna need flood coolant
12:58 PM Loetmichel: DaViruz: THAT is my desk yesterday: http://www.cyrom.org/palbum/main.php?g2_itemId=16570&g2_imageViewsIndex=1
12:59 PM Loetmichel: ... see the difference?
01:00 PM IchGucksLive: Loetmichel: girlsday tomorrow 50 chicken i cand belive the hewll of a nightmare on our age
01:02 PM Loetmichel: IchGucksLive: didnt understand a single word, sorry
01:07 PM Loetmichel: hihi
01:07 PM Loetmichel: have fun!
01:08 PM Loetmichel: 50 8th grade girls to command around for a day. are you sure that your heart is up to that? think of your age!" ;)
01:14 PM CaptHindsight: he named his desk Yesterday?!
01:18 PM gregcnc: my desk is named Tomorrow, I'll clean Tomorrow.
01:32 PM codepython777: miek: Thanks :)
01:42 PM IchGucksLive: im off Gn8
02:01 PM Loetmichel: gregcnc: hrhr
02:02 PM Loetmichel: thats usually my MO, too ;)
02:03 PM Loetmichel: but today i found some time to actually clean it. also: i was experiencing "where did i drop [insert tool of choice or E-cig] again?" more than 10 times on a single day. usually a sign that its time to finally clean that mess up ;)
02:08 PM {HD}: My hardware that went lost in the mail and that I got refunded for finally showed up after 2 months...
02:09 PM {HD}: Now I have a new parport and serial to try =)
02:09 PM {HD}: Its a CH382L but not a fake one by the looks of it.
02:17 PM {HD}: Loetmichel: yeah that's a good before and after but what does the other guys desk look like?
02:19 PM Loetmichel: {HD}: take my before, double the heap hight, empty a few boxes of small screws over that and you'll get close ;)
02:20 PM {HD}: lol
02:39 PM CaptHindsight: if I cleaned my workbenches I'd never be able to find my M3 and smaller fasteners
02:53 PM Loetmichel: CaptHindsight: i work there for about 9 years now
02:54 PM Loetmichel: atm i have about a gallon of "assorted M2, M2.5, M3 and M4 screws" in half a dozen boxes ;)
03:22 PM Jymmm: Why I love dumpster diving... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_S9YsD9Y0c
03:25 PM cpresser: Jymmm: april 1st.
03:26 PM Jymmm: ah, never even looked when it was published.
03:28 PM {HD}: http://dpaste.com/3J2K4ZW
03:29 PM {HD}: ^^ sudo lspci -vv output from new hardware
03:29 PM FinboySlick: It had a pretty big 'staged' vibe to it.
03:31 PM cradek: that doesn't matter - does it show up in dmesg as serial ports? if so, see if they work
03:31 PM {HD}: It has a 1c00 vendor ID again.
03:33 PM {HD}: alright gotta go outside...Ill play with this new hardware more tonight.
03:35 PM Jymmm: cpresser: I still lvoe dumpster diving (be it real dumpsters, swap meets, yard sales, thrift stores, surplus stores, etc
03:36 PM cpresser: absolutely. getting 'broken' stuff for free, and fixing it in 5minutes is lots of fun
03:36 PM cpresser: and sometimes even pays
03:36 PM Jymmm: cpresser: And sometimes not even broken
03:37 PM * cpresser also throws away stuff in working condition
03:37 PM cpresser: but what should i do with obsoltete parts?
03:37 PM cpresser: like DVB-T gear
03:37 PM Jymmm: I AHTE throwing away good stuff, but I'm happy to GIVE away instead.
03:37 PM cpresser: if virtually nobody has a use for it?
03:37 PM Jymmm: ...to someone that can at least apreciate it
03:38 PM Jymmm: You can repurpose many things
03:38 PM enleth: cpresser: recycling, so at least you know it doesn't end up at a landfill?
03:39 PM Jymmm: fuck recycling
03:39 PM Jymmm: That just a way for them to profit in bulk
03:39 PM enleth: uh, who's "them"?
03:39 PM Jymmm: the recyclers, who else do you think?
03:39 PM * cpresser likes recycling for metal and electronic parts
03:39 PM enleth: and what's the alternative?
03:39 PM cpresser: sure, they make a profit
03:39 PM cpresser: but i could not care less.
03:39 PM Jymmm: it cost 3x as much energy to recycle a 2l bottle than it does to create a brand new one.
03:40 PM Jymmm: 2L*
03:40 PM Jymmm: enleth: repurpose
03:40 PM cpresser: yep, but thats not true for aluminium scraps
03:40 PM cpresser: or old circuit boards
03:40 PM Jymmm: cpresser: al is a different matter
03:40 PM enleth: perhaps PET bottles are recycled improperly, but "fuck recycling" is a very broad statement
03:40 PM Jymmm: cpresser: eh, PSB I question due to the chemical process
03:41 PM cpresser: actually, most plastic garbage gets burned in germany. but they do recycle some parts
03:41 PM Jymmm: enleth: Again FUCK RECYCLING, repurpose instead.
03:41 PM cpresser: also depends on where exactly you are living
03:42 PM enleth: Jymmm: that could very well be an arbitrary distinction. Is it recycling or repurposing when you shred the bottle and use it as a filler for a completely different end product?
03:42 PM enleth: some modling processes and products tolerate a mix of fresh plastic and shredded stuff
03:42 PM Jymmm: enleth: recycling, as you need to "process" it into something else.
03:43 PM enleth: that's still quite arbitrary
03:43 PM Jymmm: enleth: 2L bottle makes excellent funnel, or storage for grains, seeds,
03:43 PM Jymmm: enleth: dont care, just repurpose it as is
03:43 PM enleth: wait, you need to "process" it to use it as a funnel
03:43 PM cpresser: imho there are lots of efficient recycling processes.
03:44 PM FinboySlick: The re-burger, a success story in recycling.
03:44 PM Jymmm: enleth: If it takes fuel/energy to "process it, it's recycling.
03:44 PM enleth: Jymmm: the world is quite a bit bigger than wherever you live that might handle recycling badly
03:44 PM Jymmm: enleth: and if you say the food you eat, I'll bitchslap you.
03:45 PM enleth: what if the energy comes from a renewable source?
03:45 PM gregcnc: i blame skipping my afternoon coffe for cutting my finger then dropping my digital mit mic which is not dead
03:45 PM Jymmm: enleth: I dont give a shit.
03:45 PM gregcnc: now dead
03:45 PM enleth: what if the processing involved actually *does* end up being less than making a new bottle?
03:45 PM * Jymmm slaps enleth with a clue-by-four
03:46 PM enleth: besides, I don't think it's realistic to repurpose that amount of bottles with no processing involved
03:47 PM enleth: I mean, it would definitely be better to use bottles that don't have those problems, like PLA, which can be composted
03:48 PM cpresser: paper is imho also a good example of 'usefull' recycling. germany recycles ~75% of its paper (http://www.umweltbundesamt.de/daten/abfall-kreislaufwirtschaft/entsorgung-verwertung-ausgewaehlter-abfallarten/altpapier)
03:48 PM enleth: but unless you enforce it by law, factories are not going to do that because it costs more, and until that happens, the reality is that we have tons of those bottles going to landfills
03:49 PM enleth: saying "fuck recycling" does very little to alleviate that problem
03:50 PM enleth: and most definitely doesn't encourage anyone to seek out recycling methods that do make sense
03:57 PM enleth: cpresser: Germany uses PLA bottles wherever possible and, as far as I can tell, most (all?) beverage containers have a deposit redeemable without a receipt and anywhere that sells the same stuff
03:59 PM enleth: cpresser: at least that's my impression from numerous visits, I wasn't really inclined to read up on the actual legislation but it appeared so universal that I assume it's just mandated by law
04:05 PM cpresser: enleth: in reality its pretty shit. at least thats what I think. there is the deposit, but some beverages are exempt (with really _weird_ rules).
04:05 PM enleth: cpresser: still way better than in Poland, trust me
04:06 PM cpresser: enleth: most of the returned bottles are not recyled properly. so its kind of a waste
04:06 PM enleth: can't return a fucking bottle without the receipt from that particular store, for that particular bottle
04:07 PM cpresser: that sounds even more braindead than the german system
04:07 PM enleth: and the only PLA bottles I've ever seen here are beverages imported from Germany
04:08 PM cpresser: imho single-use bottles should be banned.
04:08 PM enleth: nah, PLA is absolutely fine
04:08 PM XXCoder: made out of oil, or hard to recycle, yes.
04:08 PM enleth: it's made from agricultural waste byproducts and decomposes readily in compost piles or landfills
04:09 PM roycroft: i'm fine with bottle deposits
04:09 PM XXCoder: enleth: thats why I almost exclusively use pla for 3d printing. less envormental impact
04:09 PM XXCoder: I only have one petg and one abs reels.
04:09 PM roycroft: oregon was the first state in the us to require bottle deposits, and our littering rate went down dramatically as son as we did
04:09 PM roycroft: we just increased the deposit to 10 cents
04:09 PM roycroft: and i'm fine with that
04:10 PM roycroft: but i don't return bottles to the store
04:10 PM XXCoder: roy brilliant really. it will work till theres no such thing as poor
04:10 PM roycroft: i put them in my recycling bin
04:10 PM cpresser: roycroft: yep, littering goes down; but after collecting them they might end up in a landfill.
04:10 PM roycroft: the ones i don't keep
04:10 PM cpresser: so just a deposit does not solve the problem
04:10 PM enleth: roycroft: I'm pretty sure if they mandated universal no-questions-asked deposits over here, the army would have to guard landfills from hordes of people rummaging for bottles
04:10 PM roycroft: they don't here, cpresser
04:10 PM roycroft: they're remanufactured
04:10 PM roycroft: i still don't like one time use bottles though
04:11 PM roycroft: it's stupid to smash them up, remelt them, and make new bottles when they can be cleaned and refilled
04:11 PM XXCoder: theres new plastic they discovered thats made from very hard to polymerize chemical, BUT as a bonus it is endlessly recycling, they just turn it liquid again then plasticize
04:12 PM XXCoder: unlike virtually any other plastic.
04:12 PM enleth: roycroft: OTOH single-use bottles can be much thinner and cost less to transport, it's very hard to figure out if it's a net gain or loss without some hard data to analyze
04:12 PM roycroft: they should not need to be transported far
04:12 PM roycroft: that's another problem we need to address
04:12 PM enleth: roycroft: cleaning bottles for re-use also requires a lot of water
04:12 PM roycroft: not really
04:12 PM roycroft: the water can be reused
04:13 PM enleth: I'm not saying either way is better right now, as I don't have the data, I'm just saying it might not be as simple as it appears on the surface
04:13 PM roycroft: car washes consume very little water these days
04:13 PM cpresser: I can buy bottled water (in glas bottles) that was filled in italy. transported over the alps. in trucks. pretty stupid.
04:13 PM roycroft: but all this said
04:13 PM roycroft: i keg most of my beer
04:13 PM roycroft: and don't bottle it
04:13 PM roycroft: so the whole problem is moot :)
04:14 PM enleth: over here, there was a huge outcry about garbage trucks dumping all sorted waste containers into a single comparment - glass, metal, paper, etc., all going into the back of the garbage truck together. sounds horrible, right?
04:14 PM XXCoder: roycroft: yep. I use bucket of water to clean my car and thats probably twice as much as car cleaner uses up to clean my car
04:14 PM enleth: well, here's the fun part
04:14 PM enleth: they tried taking them separately and feeding the separated stuff into recycling machines
04:14 PM roycroft: one of our refuse companies does combined recycling
04:15 PM miss0r: You know the feeling, when your last long reach 10mm carbide bullmill is drawing close to its last breath, but you realy realy need it to complete something due tomorrow? :)
04:15 PM roycroft: mine still wants it separated out though
04:15 PM enleth: but every so often some fucking dumbass would e.g. throw bottles into the paper bin, which would jam and damage a multi-million paper recycling machine
04:15 PM enleth: or some paper would jam the bottle-recycling machine
04:15 PM enleth: or whatever
04:15 PM roycroft: my refuse company sorts through the sorted recycling before dumping it in the truck
04:15 PM gregcnc: so why make people separate it?
04:15 PM enleth: so they figured out if they need to sort the stuff anyway, they might just as well cut down on the delivery cost
04:15 PM roycroft: so they catch those things
04:15 PM enleth: howver, it is kinda pre-sorted
04:16 PM roycroft: yes
04:16 PM gregcnc: we don't sort here
04:16 PM roycroft: systems need adjustments
04:16 PM enleth: so it's easier to screen it on the conveyor than it would be if there were no separate bins
04:16 PM roycroft: you implement something
04:16 PM roycroft: see how it works out
04:16 PM roycroft: tweak it to fix problems that come up
04:16 PM enleth: but of course someone saw the garbage truck from their balcony, dumping all containers into the same compartment, snapped some photos and sent them to the press
04:16 PM miss0r: I have "5" trashcans here. two with each two compartments in them, and a small one for electronics'n batteries.
04:16 PM roycroft: we had a problem a few years ago
04:16 PM enleth: and the dumbass journalists made a fuss out of it
04:17 PM roycroft: people (including myself) were putting paper to be recycled in plastic bags
04:17 PM roycroft: i had a bin for most paper
04:17 PM gregcnc: buy used ebay mic for half money or buy new? note to self don't drop micrometers
04:17 PM roycroft: but shredder output i always put in plastic bags
04:17 PM roycroft: well the bags would jam the paper recycling machines
04:17 PM roycroft: so they banned using them
04:17 PM miss0r: I just stopped caring, one day when I saw the garbage truck just emptying all of them into the same compartment, and take off :-/
04:17 PM roycroft: which is actually good, since the bags werent' being recycled
04:18 PM roycroft: i ended up finding big paper bags that are used to for leaves in the fall
04:18 PM roycroft: and i bought a bunch of those
04:18 PM roycroft: now i recycle my shredder output in those bags
04:18 PM roycroft: the only drawback being they're really big, so it takes a long time to fill one
04:19 PM roycroft: and i have a giant paper bag in my library all the time because of that
04:22 PM enleth: miss0r: read what I wrote starting with "< enleth> over here, there was a huge outcry about garbage trucks dumping all sorted waste containers into a single comparment" 10 minutes ago
04:23 PM enleth: things are never so simple, that's all
04:23 PM miss0r: Seems like a theme ^^
04:23 PM enleth: miss0r: probably not the way you think
04:24 PM miss0r: I hope not. I'm all in for recycling. I go to the garbage sorting facility once a month, with the stuff I have sorted.
04:25 PM enleth: obviously, they failed at educating people about the process, therefore people like you stopped caring due to a logical - with no inside info - conclusion, which nevertheless might be wrong
04:26 PM gregcnc: I've even heard some companies just dump recycling int he landfill, but that was long ago now
04:26 PM roycroft: that's illegal here
04:26 PM roycroft: and the landfills would not tolerate it
04:28 PM miss0r: enleth: I did not stop care about recycling, not at all. I just don't use the sorting bins the way they are ment to be used. as in: I only use the one for discarted food'n stuff
04:28 PM gregcnc: https://www.wm.com/about/community/pdfs/follow_the_waste_stream.pdf https://youtu.be/HjNv_iTsXn8?t=1m33s
04:29 PM enleth: miss0r: well, they most likely get sorted anyway, they just don't care much for separating the stuff in transit because it's cheaper to let it mix a little bit than to have garbage trucks with separate compartments
04:30 PM miss0r: enleth: the arangement was actualy - to begin with - that the garbage trucks would come and empty the seprate bins on seprate days. I guess someone failed to mention that to the garbage truck company, as they always empty all at once
04:31 PM enleth: miss0r: question is, did the sorting/recycling facility actually care
04:32 PM enleth: most of them are equipped to deal with partially mixed stuff anyway because, well, there's always this guy who chucks all their trash into the first container they come by and doesn't care about sorting
04:32 PM miss0r: I guess. but in other countys near me, they have it working
04:32 PM miss0r: with the seprate pickup dates
04:33 PM CaptHindsight: Paperino nope it's not a *duino shield for wiping your bum https://www.crowdsupply.com/robert-poser/paperino
04:33 PM enleth: what they universally do screw up is educating people in the area on why and how the process works, especially if it's not obvious that everything is OK and the stuff gets sorte
04:33 PM enleth: *d
04:34 PM miss0r: well. I hope they will. For the time being I have lost faith in that part of the system, and has taken it upon myself to do the sorting and delievering it - even thou it means more work
04:35 PM gregcnc: we haven't sorted for 15 years or more, this sounds silly to me but I suppose WM made a huge investment to make this work years ago
04:38 PM roycroft: glass is the only thing we separate out from the rest of the recyclables
04:38 PM roycroft: metal and paper and plastic get mixed in together
04:38 PM CaptHindsight: I guess we aren't supposed to throw consumer electronics into the trash anymore
04:39 PM enleth: roycroft: here it's all recyclabes in one bin, non-recyclable stuff including food leftovers and such, in the other, the sorting facility takes care of the rest
04:40 PM gregcnc: yeah, that's illegal I take electronics to elgin recycling
04:41 PM CaptHindsight: gregcnc: what do they charge you for it?
04:41 PM gregcnc: nothing, unless TV or something?
04:41 PM roycroft: we just started doing curbside compostable recycling
04:42 PM roycroft: i don't know much about it
04:42 PM roycroft: because i have two big compost bins next to my garden
04:42 PM CaptHindsight: roycroft: for things like banana peels and baby diapers?
04:42 PM roycroft: it's illegal with heavy fines to put consumer electronics in the trash here
04:42 PM enleth: funny, I actually *sell* my electronics waste, it goes for 0.5-4EUR/kg depending on the contents
04:42 PM roycroft: i don't know about baby diapers
04:42 PM roycroft: but banana peels, yes
04:43 PM roycroft: i donate my electronics waste to a local school district
04:43 PM gregcnc: I don't even have any idea what you're supposed to do with smoke, CO detectors with radioactive elements
04:43 PM CaptHindsight: gregcnc: leave them on the ceiling
04:43 PM roycroft: they take a big truck up to an electronics recycling facility near the dalles a couple times/year and sell it
04:44 PM gregcnc: or CFL for that. Law said anyone selling CFL would take them back, but no one does
04:44 PM roycroft: the dalles is in the columbia river gorge, in north central oregon, along the washington border
04:44 PM roycroft: i took my cfl back to the stores where i bought them
04:44 PM enleth: gregcnc: have you checked home improvement store chains?
04:44 PM gregcnc: yes
04:44 PM roycroft: now i have all led lights, and none have burned out
04:44 PM roycroft: leds are much better than cfls
04:45 PM gregcnc: I had a cree LED fail, suprisingly
04:45 PM CaptHindsight: gregcnc: you might have to dispose of them in some elses dumpster
04:45 PM roycroft: cfls contain mercury
04:45 PM roycroft: they really need to be handled properly
04:45 PM CaptHindsight: gregcnc: elgin doesn't take those?
04:46 PM enleth: gregcnc: well, if the law says they should take it and they won't I'd just drop it off on the counter with a printed quote from the relevant legislation and leave
04:46 PM gregcnc: 20+ years ago when we changed 8ft fl they just went into the dumpster and we all got thances to throw them and watch them shatter, i wonder how many years that took off my life
04:46 PM CaptHindsight: gregcnc: we used to toss crt's neck first into them
04:47 PM CaptHindsight: depends if you were down wind or not
04:47 PM gregcnc: trash guy took my 4ft tubes, but told me eh's not supposed to take more than 2 at a time, i asked because i had 8 or so
04:47 PM CaptHindsight: how about tires?
04:48 PM gregcnc: my old man said it's like $5 to dispose of them at any tire shop
04:48 PM CaptHindsight: I think thats why people sell bald tires on craigslist
04:48 PM CaptHindsight: free with rims
04:49 PM gregcnc: right
04:49 PM roycroft: it's illegal to put fluorescent bulbs out in the trash here
04:49 PM Deejay: gn8
04:49 PM gregcnc: so where to they go?
04:49 PM roycroft: and the stores that are required to recycle them are only required to take tubes up to 4' long
04:49 PM roycroft: if you have an 8' tube you are supposed to make an appointment at a regional transfer station to turn them in
04:50 PM CaptHindsight: what if they break?
04:50 PM roycroft: i have a problem with that
04:50 PM roycroft: if they break i'm not sure what you're supposed to do
04:50 PM roycroft: if they break the mercury is already released
04:50 PM gregcnc: call OEPA? to report
04:50 PM roycroft: so it's probably ok to put them in the trash
04:51 PM roycroft: we call it the deq here - department of environmental quality
04:51 PM roycroft: i think if you break one you don't have to report it
04:51 PM roycroft: if you break a case of them, perhaps
04:51 PM roycroft: i'm sure there's some threshold where it becomes an official "situation"
04:52 PM roycroft: i don't know how you break them though - i've been handling flourescent tubes since i was a young teen and i've never broken one
04:52 PM CaptHindsight: I guess the worst thing to happen is have your TV fall off the stack of old tires and break CFL lamps
04:52 PM roycroft: and when i was a young teen we were barely aware of the environmental hazard they pose
04:53 PM roycroft: we were just becoming aware that the ddt that fluorescent ballasts leaked was hazardous
04:53 PM CaptHindsight: " Home Depot: Bring in cell phones, rechargeable batteries, and CFL bulbs to Home Depot stores, where they'll recycle these items for you at no charge. ... Walmart: This mega store offers several recycling options. First, if you're recycling an electronic, you can drop it off at participating Walmart stores."
04:53 PM roycroft: but not aware enough to have banned ddt in fluorescent ballasts yet
04:54 PM gregcnc: I'll have to try HD again, when i asked about CFL before they looked at me like an idiot and nobody knew anything
04:54 PM CaptHindsight: http://www.goodhousekeeping.com/institute/a19363/12-companies-with-great-recycling-programs/

04:57 PM Loetmichel: gregcnc: i have a (NI-cd, panasonic red amp) battery pack in my R/C-transmitter that is from the early 80ties
04:57 PM Loetmichel: still works flawlessly
04:57 PM CaptHindsight: gregcnc: Bjorkmans says they tale CFL's
04:57 PM gregcnc: Panasonic?
04:58 PM gregcnc: Sanyo back then were excellent, I probably still have some 1400SCR around
04:59 PM gregcnc: thanks, i have to get rid of these CFL
04:59 PM Loetmichel: they are much older than the sanyo
04:59 PM CaptHindsight: gregcnc: http://ecooptions.homedepot.com/healthy-home/recycling/

05:00 PM gregcnc: i've asked several times since 2008
05:00 PM CaptHindsight: gregcnc: I bet few do, so the people there don't really know what to do
05:01 PM CaptHindsight: heh, stop by with a reporter or camera crew and ask them
05:02 PM CaptHindsight: Pioneer Press is just down the street
05:02 PM CaptHindsight: might depend on if HD advertises with them or not
05:03 PM gregcnc: I'll try again next time I go
05:04 PM gregcnc: panasonic for RC weren't that common in the US until they made the purple 1700 SCR in 90's?
05:04 PM Loetmichel: i am in germany
05:04 PM Loetmichel: here they were prbably the only ones that could cope with E-flight back in the days
05:05 PM Loetmichel: hat that pack in a soaring plane with a mabuchi 550 direct drive prop
05:06 PM Loetmichel: 3 min "electric thermal updraft", 20 min soaring, then 6 min directly connected to the car battery to recharge
05:06 PM CaptHindsight: Loetmichel: are you 100% wind + solar on the weekends?
05:06 PM Loetmichel: and that for about 10 years every weekend ;)
05:06 PM gregcnc: yes i know, I remember seeing Panasonic in the german magazines, we had Sanyo. I sold and assembled batteries for a few years around 1998
05:06 PM Loetmichel: CaptHindsight:??
05:06 PM Loetmichel: do you mean all germany?
05:07 PM Loetmichel: no, iirc its about 23% of the energy supply in germany is renewable
05:07 PM CaptHindsight: yes, or even in any regions?
05:07 PM Loetmichel: the rest is mostly gas turbines
05:08 PM Loetmichel: and a very few still running fission plants
05:08 PM Loetmichel: (and a few coal ones left)
05:08 PM CaptHindsight: oh I thought you had stopped coal
05:09 PM Loetmichel: we reduce it
05:09 PM CaptHindsight: https://energytransition.org/2016/05/germany-nearly-reached-100-percent-renewable-power-on-sunday/
05:09 PM CaptHindsight: was just that one day
05:09 PM Tom_L: hah
05:10 PM CaptHindsight: still impressive
05:10 PM Loetmichel: hmmm
05:11 PM Tom_L: i forget what country it was that had nearly no waste
05:11 PM Loetmichel: only for a few hours. i was talking "on average"
05:11 PM CaptHindsight: yeah
05:11 PM Tom_L: all recycled
05:11 PM CaptHindsight: andora?

05:15 PM CaptHindsight: gregcnc: IL uses as much energy as Poland!
05:16 PM CaptHindsight: try to work that into the next conversation at the checkout line
05:16 PM gregcnc: http://tinyurl.com/kvw4em4 I read this today. I'm not sure what point they were making
05:18 PM CaptHindsight: looks like savings not based on physics but on economics
05:19 PM CaptHindsight: author should be beaten
05:19 PM CaptHindsight: in a constructive manner
05:20 PM gregcnc: IL has 1/3 the population of Poland, and GDP per capita is ~3x Poland
05:21 PM gregcnc: I had to look up negawatt, appearently it's his life work
05:22 PM CaptHindsight: saved from what? the bell, sharks, ??
05:22 PM CaptHindsight: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Negawatt_power
05:23 PM gregcnc: I don't understand how he's trying to compare.
05:23 PM CaptHindsight: Currently, there is no way to precisely measure the amount of energy saved in negawatts, and electricity providers may not want customers to use less energy due to the loss of profit.
05:24 PM CaptHindsight: so he could change his metric to faerywings/kwh
05:24 PM gregcnc: everything run on electricity today and stuff usually doesn't get replaced until it dies, so it will take some time for more efficient tech to replace all the old stuff
05:25 PM CaptHindsight: yeah but he's written papers and gives speeches on the subject
05:25 PM CaptHindsight: he might even have a special hat and robe to go with it
05:25 PM gregcnc: I think he wants to legislate efficiency
05:26 PM CaptHindsight: Physicist Amory Lovins coined the term and introduced it in a speech in 1989. Negawatt started life as a typo: Lovins saw megawatt spelled with an 'n' in a document he was reading and was struck by the potential of that typo as a useful concept.

05:44 PM CaptHindsight: what the "best way" for a maker-type to get a flat surface on a epoxy granite block?
05:45 PM CaptHindsight: or do you skip trying to get the block flat and just focus on getting the linear bearings mounted flat?
05:48 PM CaptHindsight: or if you have forms that you use to cast it, a piece of plate glass might be used
05:49 PM CaptHindsight: ~1/2" (12mm) glass is readily available
05:52 PM CaptHindsight: maybe just having the bearings on anchors that may be cast into the epoxy is easiest and more "user error" proof
05:53 PM CaptHindsight: anchors with jack screws
05:55 PM Loetmichel: CaptHindsight: why not grind it flat?
05:55 PM CaptHindsight: Loetmichel: they won't have a grinder
05:56 PM CaptHindsight: it might be better to just sell flat and square epoxy granite blocks with anchors already inserted
05:57 PM CaptHindsight: building epoxy granite machines frames is not difficult for those with the skills and tools...
05:58 PM CaptHindsight: is there a way for someone without the skills and tools to do so
05:58 PM CaptHindsight: ?
06:02 PM gregcnc: http://www.practicalmachinist.com/vb/cnc-machining/linear-way-machines-shimmed-alignment-295143/
06:03 PM Loetmichel: CaptHindsight: depends on how determined you are
06:03 PM Loetmichel: you CAN build molds for the epoxy granite stuff exactly square. but its not easy to do so if you dont have the proper tools
06:04 PM CaptHindsight: Loetmichel: maker types, the same people that make printers from threaded rods and glue guns
06:05 PM Loetmichel: ... probably not ;)
06:05 PM CaptHindsight: yeah, trying to make this "maker-proof"

09:16 PM pfred1: we don't have to visit their trailer
09:16 PM gregcnc: I have to look at a turret encoder tomorrow. I hope it just needs alignment and is not actually dying
09:17 PM pfred1: gregcnc is it hall effect or optical?
09:17 PM insomnia is now known as DieFledermaus
09:17 PM pfred1: or something else again?
09:18 PM gregcnc: optical i think
09:18 PM pfred1: might just need a good clean
09:18 PM gregcnc: it's sealed nothing should be getting in
09:18 PM cradek: on my hnc it's a magnet and reed switches
09:18 PM pfred1: cool
09:18 PM cradek: no moving parts except stuck permanently inside glass
09:18 PM pfred1: tht's almost hall effect amgnetic at least
09:19 PM pfred1: I'm making a speed controller for my mill's power feed
09:19 PM pfred1: the ones they sell always blow up
09:20 PM gregcnc: there is a prox too. I went through this a few months ago, and never found anything, but didn't check encoder alignment
09:21 PM Cromaglious_: I was thinking of using an Arduino as a pulse generator for a stepper speed control
09:21 PM pfred1: why not just use a 555?
09:21 PM pfred1: they make pulses
09:21 PM cradek: or stepgen
09:22 PM pfred1: when I was making stepper drives I used a 555 to gen the steps
09:23 PM pfred1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GU2GaSMPxNI
09:24 PM pfred1: then I used LinuxCNC https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cgbeyNNBZ68
09:26 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f2saYF_FLgA low precision line boring with floating bearings
09:28 PM pfred1: I just got new engraving bits and a bunch of FR4 board
09:34 PM Cromaglious_: pfred1, arduino so i can have the LCD with a button pasd to have .01 .05 .1 .2 1 5 10 20 jogs on 8 buttons and have another 8 for preloaded speeds. on the LCD buttons I can set direction and speed.
09:34 PM pfred1: hmm hmm
09:34 PM pfred1: fancy
09:34 PM pfred1: you can do that with a 555 too
09:35 PM pfred1: just use a bunch of resistors
09:36 PM Cromaglious_: easier to use an arduino for me...
09:36 PM Cromaglious_: heading home...
10:03 PM Crom: home
10:04 PM pfred1: not bad
10:05 PM pfred1: it takes your 23 minutes to get home
10:19 PM pfred1: this circuit practically lays out itself http://i.imgur.com/iiuSn8H.png
10:20 PM Crom: had to stop of some ciggi butts
10:21 PM pfred1: I want to build the CAM plugin for KICAD but a lot of packages on my system don't meet the version requirements
10:21 PM pfred1: big packages
10:22 PM pfred1: I hate when developers do that make the deps so hard to meet
11:11 PM TurBoss: Hello
11:12 PM TurBoss: I have a latch wired to the e-stop
11:12 PM TurBoss: like this
11:12 PM TurBoss: http://dpaste.com/2SQJ2AM
11:12 PM TurBoss: how I can wire the ok-out signal to the machine.on signal?¿
11:16 PM Tom_L: machine.on is output right?
11:16 PM TurBoss: aah
11:17 PM Tom_L: i'd have to look to be sure
11:17 PM TurBoss: halui.machine.on (bit, in) - pin for requesting machine on
11:17 PM TurBoss: seem no
11:17 PM Tom_L: so add it to the list there then
11:17 PM Tom_L: those are all input
11:18 PM Crom: https://forum.linuxcnc.org/39-pncconf/25862-configuring-estop-latch
11:18 PM TurBoss: but what signal i should get to put in machine.on?
11:20 PM TurBoss: the e-stop latch works fine
11:20 PM TurBoss: but I want to enable the machine when I press the fault reset button
11:21 PM Tom_L: what's it connected to?
11:22 PM TurBoss: net estop-reset estop-latch.0.reset <= parport.1.pin-10-in
11:22 PM Tom_L: net estop-reset machine.on estop-latch.0.reset <= parport.1.pin-10-in
11:23 PM Tom_L: something like that
11:23 PM Tom_L: onlyh parport....in is input
11:23 PM TurBoss: this will wire the signal to the 2 in?
11:23 PM Tom_L: and you can't have input going to another input
11:24 PM TurBoss: ahhh
11:24 PM Tom_L: net reset-button-pushed machine.on <= button.pushed.output
11:24 PM Tom_L: sudo code
