12:55 AM IchGucksLive: good morning from freezing germany
12:59 AM IchGucksLive: cheep good spindles http://www.ebay.com/itm/CNC-AIR-COOLED-SPINDLE-2-2-KW/172567550915
01:04 AM Crom: nice Turkish!
01:04 AM Crom: Turkey makes some trally nice M1911A1 Pistols I would love to get
01:04 AM Crom: really
01:05 AM IchGucksLive: till later ;-)
01:09 AM archivist: Crom, spindle to suit tooling, are you making an auto tool change or not
01:14 AM Crom: o could love to make a tool changer... using TTS in a R8 collet..
01:18 AM archivist: the bt30 or similar will be better for auto tool change, the morse worst
01:22 AM archivist: my mill is effectively like one as it is a headstock off a lathe with a morse 2 taper
01:22 AM Crom: http://www.ebay.com/itm/MT3-BT30-Spindle-Unit-3000rpm-8000rpm-Power-Head-750W-Induction-Motor-V-Belt-Kit-/192109395447?var=&hash=item2cba9cbdf7:m:m6sfpiawpfYh81W5iYdJUMA
01:34 AM Crom: They have a MT5 spindle as well... That's basically a lathe head stock for sure
01:35 AM archivist: the er20 picture is odd
01:36 AM archivist: but standard spindle plus collet chucks to fit is more normal
01:36 AM Crom: 5c unit used... v
01:36 AM Crom: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Powerhead-with-5C-Spindle-with-5C-Collet-Nose-/132142327528?hash=item1ec44be6e8:g:pYkAAOSwSHZWfwWV
01:37 AM archivist: I got a used right angle 30 size off ebay
01:38 AM archivist: http://www.collection.archivist.info/searchv13.php?searchstr=pd+fexac
01:52 AM Deejay: moinsen
01:57 AM Crom: Nice. Welp. Tomorrow i regenerate the tool path with 3 mm tool from the depth of -15.1mm
01:57 AM Crom: As well as a 6mm tool path.... I don't have any more 4mm end mills
02:21 AM yasnak: so, newbie question but one that seems to constantly haunt me. what type of facemill/insert should one use to surface mill some flat 304 stainless down?
02:22 AM yasnak: I have no issues with work hardening and such, easy stuff. I'm HSM'ing everything, legit machines not hobby. It seems the mill finish "frosty" that comes on the bar is the issue...its so gummy it kills the inserts that are needed to facemill below it. Tool life either sucks or milling takes forever.
02:31 AM archivist_herron: perhaps ask the insert maker
02:32 AM Crom: I would love to have a machine that can do stainless
02:38 AM archivist_herron: yasnak, insufficient cut, nut getting under the skin? lube, the right lube?
02:39 AM archivist_herron: built up edge?
02:39 AM yasnak: yeah, cutter edge breaks down at that top layer, the actual cutter tips are all good.
02:39 AM yasnak: 304 sucks yeah, but if you cut it right its fine. but that top layer of gummy shit really eats cutters
02:40 AM yasnak: debating switching to solid carbide and just sacrificing them to get that first bit off.
02:40 AM archivist_herron: work hardened rather than gummy, get under it first pass
02:40 AM yasnak: yeah, i take it all in one
02:41 AM yasnak: 0.15" doc per side, 4 inch face mill
02:41 AM yasnak: 45 deg high feed
02:42 AM yasnak: new idea: better stock
02:42 AM archivist_herron: its the life of 20 minutes that bugs me in the insert data book
02:43 AM archivist_herron: but the figures are with the right feed, lube and a following wind
02:44 AM yasnak: must I also visit church on sundays? :P
02:55 AM archivist_herron: I was at "church" on sunday..... http://www.middleton-leawood.org.uk/leawood/
02:57 AM archivist_herron: 30+ tons of moving metal
03:01 AM yasnak: LOL
03:01 AM yasnak: nice, amazing stuff huh
03:01 AM yasnak: back when machinists were really machinists
03:09 AM archivist_herron: the keyways are hand chiselled
03:09 AM archivist_herron: some faces "as cast"
03:28 AM The_Ball: Anyone know why some analog servo drives use tachometers? When linuxcnc is doing the pid control couldn't the drive just be "dumb"?
03:34 AM enleth: The_Ball: your question is based on an incorrect premise and technically can't be answered straight
03:34 AM archivist_herron: some are set up part of the loop in the drive and part in linuxcnc
03:35 AM enleth: The_Ball: the tacho-less servo drives still do have velocity feedback from back-EMF monitoring, they just don't need a separate tacho
03:35 AM archivist_herron: velocity and position
03:36 AM enleth: The_Ball: they do need that feedback in all cases (that is, all cases of velocity mode, torque mode doesn't), because LinuxCNC is commanding velocity
03:36 AM enleth: The_Ball: how would the drive set velocity of the motor with no feedback at all?
03:37 AM XXCoder: boo
03:39 AM enleth: The_Ball: now, some drives can act as dumb voltage amplifiers with the tacho/back-EMF monitoring disabled and you could then use the encoder as a velocity feedback source, not just for position feedback, and do both velocity and position PIDs in software, and in principle it would work fine (in practice, depending on a lot of factors)
03:42 AM enleth: The_Ball: but if your drive can do a nice tight hardware velocity loop, why make your life harder? a high power DC servo reacts so fast I'd always go for a separate hardware-based velocity PID without looking back
03:42 AM enleth: I suppose there might be scenarios where skipping it would make some sense for some reason, but I can't think of one now
03:44 AM archivist_herron: cheap h bridge drives
03:44 AM enleth: (as for "some drives can act as dumb voltage amplifiers" - not all drives have the switches/jumpers/whatever exposed for decoupling the feedback loop and biasing the reference input with a constant voltage level)
03:45 AM enleth: archivist_herron: you mean, if the drive's PID is shitty?
03:46 AM archivist_herron: no, I mean switched h bridges without any feedback
03:46 AM archivist_herron: in the drive
03:47 AM enleth: strictly speaking, you can't skip something that isn't there, which is what I was wondering about, but you're right, I did not cover that case
03:48 AM enleth: obviously with a drive that just doesn't have a velocity loop at all, you need software velocity PID
03:48 AM enleth: I'm curious if there are cases where it would be beneficial to skip a hardware velocity loop that is there and go for software
03:49 AM enleth: not sure if it's possible to make a hardware PID so shitty to warrant this without really trying
03:51 AM archivist_herron: price, less hardware needed
04:08 AM IchGucksLive: hi from germany
04:09 AM XXCoder: hey
04:10 AM IchGucksLive: ;-)
04:10 AM IchGucksLive: Crom: stil on
04:13 AM IchGucksLive: XXCoder: how is it we got some snow overnight
04:14 AM XXCoder: voodoo
04:15 AM XXCoder: heh
04:15 AM XXCoder: sadly some regions of ocean is heavily cooled by melting ice
04:15 AM XXCoder: expecially greenland, thats melting very fast
04:15 AM IchGucksLive: el ninio will warm it up later
04:16 AM XXCoder: scientists predict it will be worse el nino ever
04:16 AM IchGucksLive: trump says alternative facts
04:17 AM IchGucksLive: and deported the carrier brigade to Australia
04:17 AM IchGucksLive: fleet comand wanted the other way
04:17 AM XXCoder: either 45 was lying or boats got wrong orders
04:17 AM XXCoder: either way funny
04:19 AM IchGucksLive: same as in 1992 the Eisenhower ordert Gibraltar to get out of the way sa Carrier got high permission
04:19 AM IchGucksLive: with 3 officel calls as recorded
04:20 AM IchGucksLive: Radar review showed the Rock wars traveling at KN
04:20 AM IchGucksLive: 3Kn
04:20 AM IchGucksLive: Spain woudt be afraid to get rid of the UK stone
04:21 AM IchGucksLive: storries to tell
04:21 AM XXCoder: lol
04:22 AM IchGucksLive: non educatred people on the driver seat
04:23 AM IchGucksLive: that is impressiv in the USA on Traffic lights count down
04:23 AM IchGucksLive: all cars are moving within milliseconds
04:24 AM IchGucksLive: on Automatic
04:24 AM IchGucksLive: im off to launch
04:24 AM XXCoder: later
04:26 AM Sabotender: XXCoder: o/
04:27 AM XXCoder: hey
04:27 AM Sabotender: lol getting my messages now?
04:27 AM XXCoder: huh
04:28 AM Sabotender: I dont know. my client was being laggy and I was trying to say stuff to you
04:28 AM archivist_herron: you were asleep and dreaming
04:28 AM Sabotender: archivist_herron: lies!
04:29 AM XXCoder: lol
04:29 AM XXCoder: well what you trying to say anyway
04:29 AM XXCoder: while youre awake ;)
04:29 AM Sabotender: anyway, I wanted to mention that the same machine shop is willing to give me an even better price if I use wood for the first few prototypes until I can get it right, then I can move up to plastic and aluminum
04:29 AM Sabotender: *aluminium
04:30 AM XXCoder: oh yah forgot
04:30 AM XXCoder: archivist_herron: I got lathe lol
04:30 AM XXCoder: tiny.
04:30 AM XXCoder: sabot probably because testing with wood and such will lower scrap cost
04:32 AM Sabotender: XXCoder: but that is pretty awesome they are willing to work with me and my prototyping instead of eye gouging me
04:32 AM XXCoder: ew
04:33 AM Sabotender: lol you know, charging me a lot of money for one runs.
04:33 AM gottaname|wurk: hey XXCoder, can you manufacture rifles with your CNC machine?
04:33 AM XXCoder: got nope and even if can won't.
04:33 AM gottaname|wurk: XXCoder, why not?
04:33 AM gottaname|wurk: not legal?
04:33 AM XXCoder: dont need weapons
04:33 AM XXCoder: and yeah likely not
04:34 AM XXCoder: closest thing I plan is fake aluminium knives
04:34 AM gottaname|wurk: XXCoder, the impression of the US at least here
04:34 AM XXCoder: decoactive fantasy or scifi ones.
04:35 AM gottaname|wurk: is that its riddled with crime
04:35 AM gottaname|wurk: :(
04:35 AM XXCoder: I live at #1 highest crime city in wa state
04:35 AM gottaname|wurk: XXCoder, singapore is safe, but recently our cops have been upgunning
04:36 AM gottaname|wurk: as in they've switched from revolvers to automatic pisols
04:36 AM gottaname|wurk: pistols*
04:36 AM gottaname|wurk: and they've increased the number of tactical police patrolling
04:36 AM XXCoder: whats population number at singapore?
04:37 AM gottaname|wurk: 5 mil
04:37 AM XXCoder: thats less than ONE state, state I live in. wa state has 7.06 million
04:37 AM gottaname|wurk: XXCoder, yeah but ours is crazily dense
04:38 AM gottaname|wurk: 32km square
04:38 AM XXCoder: thats why # of crime / population is better comparision of crime level
04:38 AM gottaname|wurk: but population density?
04:39 AM gottaname|wurk: XXCoder, there's a running joke that if you commit a crime, a police officer will jump you within 6 minutes
04:39 AM gottaname|wurk: 6 mins max
04:39 AM XXCoder: density increases chances but true comparism is crimes/population
04:40 AM gottaname|wurk: ours is quite low
04:40 AM gottaname|wurk: but why do cops need to go around with submachine guns and G36s is beyond me
04:40 AM XXCoder: peen I guess
04:42 AM gottaname|wurk: also I don'
04:42 AM gottaname|wurk: don'
04:42 AM gottaname|wurk: oops*
04:42 AM gottaname|wurk: I don't get the infatuation with guns americans have
04:42 AM gottaname|wurk: I think its a tool and its work trying to shoot something
04:43 AM XXCoder: well consider this
04:43 AM XXCoder: lemme get info forgot exact info
04:43 AM XXCoder: https://img.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/files/2016/09/guns1.jpg
04:44 AM Sabotender: I don't own a single firearm
04:44 AM Sabotender: I do have a sweet collection of decorative swords though.
04:45 AM gottaname|wurk: XXCoder, I was and still am part of the military
04:45 AM gottaname|wurk: even I don't think owning a gun gives you any advantage over security forces
04:45 AM Sabotender: i'm like Batman when it comes to guns ;-)
04:47 AM XXCoder: lol
04:47 AM XXCoder: youre a realist on guns
04:47 AM XXCoder: guns help defense but up to a point.
04:48 AM XXCoder: sadly most home invasion criminal is one that gets house gun
04:49 AM gottaname|wurk: XXCoder, we don't get home invasions here though
04:49 AM gottaname|wurk: its because the criminal tends to be caught and punished severely
04:49 AM gottaname|wurk: we are famous for caning people
04:50 AM gottaname|wurk: also hanging drug traffickers
05:09 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
05:19 AM jthornton: morning
05:20 AM XXCoder: yo
05:30 AM jthornton: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1517786
05:30 AM jthornton: I need to print some of those
05:31 AM XXCoder: you need top print ALL of it. ;)
05:31 AM jthornton: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1538900
05:32 AM XXCoder: funny how "ALL" is amgious in my statement
05:36 AM jthornton: I wonder how many of my chicks are roosters...
05:37 AM XXCoder: 50% if its true random assortment
05:45 AM The_Ball: Anyone know the answer to this question from 2015? How to open a hal scope "log" file for review? https://forum.linuxcnc.org/38-general-linuxcnc-questions/29381-open-log-file-in-halscope
05:45 AM The_Ball: File -> "Open Data File" is greyed out
05:49 AM jthornton: saved data files are just text files... open them with your favorite text editor
05:53 AM The_Ball: jthornton, I thought you could load up halscope with a previous save to browse the data graphically, but looks like it hasn't been implemented yet
05:57 AM The_Ball: Chris Radek wrote back in 2012 "Sadly that feature is just unimplemented. It's deceptive to have it there but inactive, since usually that means it can become active if only the user could figure out how!"
05:58 AM jthornton: lol
06:01 AM MacGalempsy: mornin
06:02 AM XXCoder: yo
06:02 AM jthornton: I figure the m3 standoffs I ordered from aliexpress will show up today only because I ordered some from amazon
06:06 AM MacGalempsy: ?
06:06 AM XXCoder: lol
06:06 AM MacGalempsy: still no tweaker drone running?
06:07 AM MacGalempsy: it needs more meth
06:07 AM XXCoder: jt yeah once waited 2 goddamn months for resistors
06:07 AM XXCoder: guess what? they both arrived same day together
06:07 AM XXCoder: so first one took 3 months to get to me,.
06:08 AM jthornton: tweaker is waiting on the standoffs
06:08 AM XXCoder: I ordered standoffs
06:08 AM XXCoder: its m2 and useless
06:09 AM XXCoder: what size standoffs do circuit boards and motherboard usually use anyway
06:09 AM jthornton: m3
06:09 AM MacGalempsy: shoot. how long? i probably could have mailed u a few
06:10 AM MacGalempsy: now it would have to wait until this well tds
06:10 AM XXCoder: m3? ok
06:10 AM XXCoder: I'll have to wait for next month
06:10 AM XXCoder: ordered too many stuff this month LOL
06:10 AM MacGalempsy: the mwd tool battery is lithium ion 40Ah
06:10 AM XXCoder: (it dont impact my budget but too many stuff anyway)
06:11 AM MacGalempsy: they wouldnt let me make a cattle prod out of it..
06:11 AM MacGalempsy: i bought darts last month...
06:13 AM MacGalempsy: got a bunch of Harrows straight from the UK
06:20 AM * jthornton wonders how badly the docs are broken after adding a new pdf
06:22 AM The_Ball: weighted_sum component for the win with my 15 pos BCD ATC pos encoder
06:23 AM XXCoder: trim tool and few arcylic sheets still coming
06:23 AM The_Ball: enleth, sorry didn't see your feedback (pun intended) before, thanks for answering that
06:24 AM XXCoder: 90 degree inside braces, hex tools, and m6 sized bowden connectors still coming in from aliexpress
06:24 AM enleth: The_Ball: you're welcome
06:24 AM XXCoder: wish - random shit and 2 3d printers
06:25 AM XXCoder: oh dont forget sciplus which is few diamond files, some tools
06:25 AM The_Ball: The tacho on one axis might be broken, so that's why I'm asking, but haven't debugged yet
06:26 AM The_Ball: enleth, and there's a massively loud 5Khz whine from them
06:29 AM enleth: The_Ball: the tacho should be absolutely silent unless something actually fell in and got inbetween the rotor and the stator
06:29 AM enleth: but then you'd be hearing grinding noises, not a constant pitch whine
06:30 AM enleth: The_Ball: is the tacho a part of the motor?
06:32 AM The_Ball: enleth, the taco is a part of the motor yes. But I meant there is a 5Khz servo pid loop whine when I enable the working motors. The Y axis runs away. Could be a wiring problem though, haven't checked yet
06:32 AM enleth: ah, OK
06:33 AM The_Ball: It's loud enough that I put on hearing protection
06:33 AM enleth: interesting
06:34 AM The_Ball: enleth, this video doesn't really do the noise justice https://owncloud.wigen.net/index.php/s/krSVjbhiWkQ0wTE
06:34 AM XXCoder: its perfectly silent to me
06:34 AM XXCoder: of course, everything else are to me/
06:35 AM enleth: I've been playing with high frequency inputs when tuning the servo drives on the bridgeport and while the motor did work as a speaker and even produced recognizable music, I couldn't get it to be very loud
06:36 AM The_Ball: The z motor is at the back of the machine so it's a bit shielded
06:36 AM enleth: checking the tacho is quite simple so you should definitely do it if you suspect it to be a problem, but I'd rather blame wiring or a faulty drive here
06:37 AM enleth: but why 5kHz of all things? unless there are other, higher frequencies here that are just out of the audible range
06:37 AM enleth: 5kHz seems a bit low for a switching frequency
06:37 AM The_Ball: old drives i guess
06:38 AM enleth: do you have any datasheets?
06:39 AM enleth: obviously if that is stated as their switching frequency, it's going to be easier
06:39 AM enleth: I can't think of any failure mode external to the drive itself that would cause the switching frequency itself to be output at high power
06:40 AM enleth: The_Ball: do you know if the drives in your mill are all tuned in the same way?
06:41 AM enleth: The_Ball: if they are, first thing I'd try if simple wiring inspection and input signal checks don't reveal any clues would be to swap two drives
06:41 AM enleth: if the problem moves over to another axis, it's the drive
06:45 AM The_Ball: contraves servo drive, the documentation stated 5Khz. The previous owner had rigged up some manual enable switches for testing and they all sounded the same
06:47 AM The_Ball: enleth, finally found a picture https://owncloud.wigen.net/index.php/s/n43ZIyCzLCo7tmM
06:48 AM enleth: oh, that looks easy to swap around
06:49 AM The_Ball: for sure, the X is out of position because the fault indicator lights up. But there are schematics for the whole drive and it's all through hole components so should be an easy fix
09:14 AM roycroft: looks like bill o'reilly's fexit is going to be official this week
09:14 AM roycroft: ack, mischan
09:16 AM enleth: any suggestions for a "conversational" mode panel/plugin/mode for a mill?
09:16 AM enleth: preferably pyvcp
09:17 AM enleth: conversational/canned cycless/whatchacallit
09:17 AM enleth: *cycles
09:18 AM archivist_herron: try the new panel as it has moore
09:19 AM enleth: new panel?
09:21 AM archivist_herron: was called features have a more apt name now
09:23 AM archivist_herron: http://hackaday.com/2015/12/25/linuxcnc-features-is-the-garage-fabs-missing-cam-tool/
09:23 AM archivist_herron: features
09:24 AM archivist_herron: db
09:24 AM the_wench: http://www.wench.archivist.info/index.php?chan=%23linuxcnc
09:29 AM archivist_herron: NativeCAM by the look of it forum seems a bit dead
09:30 AM archivist_herron: https://github.com/FernV/NativeCAM
09:31 AM IchGucksLive: this will be fully included into 2.8
09:31 AM archivist_herron: !wench learn features is NativeCAM https://github.com/FernV/NativeCAM
09:31 AM the_wench: I have learned features is NativeCAM https://github.com/FernV/NativeCAM
09:32 AM IchGucksLive: archivist ad now
09:32 AM IchGucksLive: do i need to alsk him
09:32 AM IchGucksLive: or does he interfear at
09:33 AM IchGucksLive: !wench cam
09:33 AM IchGucksLive: !wench NativeCAM

09:34 AM archivist_herron: it is a her
09:34 AM archivist_herron: a serving wench
09:35 AM IchGucksLive: so learn him cam as well and the full nativCam
09:35 AM IchGucksLive: BUT what happens if we talk on featurers
09:35 AM IchGucksLive: as we do offen features =12
09:35 AM IchGucksLive: so only one word will trigger
09:36 AM IchGucksLive: features
09:36 AM the_wench: NativeCAM https://github.com/FernV/NativeCAM
09:36 AM IchGucksLive: AHHH
09:36 AM archivist_herron: middle of a sentence is not seen, clever bot
09:36 AM IchGucksLive: nice tool
09:37 AM IchGucksLive: i hope also that the dxf2gcode will be implemented
09:37 AM IchGucksLive: as so many peole are asking on howto
09:38 AM IchGucksLive: archivist_herron: is there a list of known words to the wrench

09:39 AM archivist_herron: I may delete stuff if it causes problems
09:39 AM gregcnc: so how long before she replaces all of us?
09:40 AM IchGucksLive: archivist_herron: why beer
09:40 AM archivist_herron: when I learn to shove some sentience in
09:40 AM archivist_herron: wenches serve beer
09:41 AM IchGucksLive: ok im off have a nonbitbreaking day
10:05 AM enleth: I'm getting error 500 on the linuxcnc forum when trying to browse pages in a topic
10:06 AM enleth: is that a known problem?
10:08 AM JT-Shop: which topic?
10:10 AM enleth: https://forum.linuxcnc.org/40-subroutines-and-ngcgui/26578-linuxcnc-features-a-kind-of-ngcgui?start=60 for example
10:10 AM enleth: https://forum.linuxcnc.org/forum/41-guis/26550-lathe-macros?limitstart=0 same thing
10:11 AM enleth: oh, the latter one is actually supposed to be the first page
10:11 AM enleth: it worked a moment ago, but any further pages didn't
10:12 AM JT-Shop: that's a pretty old topic maybe some got lost during the conversion a few years back
10:13 AM archivist_herron: 500 error is plain wrong for a missing post should be 404
10:18 AM archivist_herron: from front page https://forum.linuxcnc.org/40-subroutines-and-ngcgui is 500, serious error
11:20 AM DrippityDrops: I had another idea today....
11:20 AM DrippityDrops: I thought a person could engineer a pick and place machine for gardens....
11:21 AM archivist: been done
11:22 AM DrippityDrops: so a consumer would want rows of various plants spaced at specified distanced. So the consumer would go online and layout their entire garden with the seed choices available. Then the machine would pick and place onto big toilet paper type rolls and the seeds layered between.
11:23 AM SpeedEvil: that's probably not how you want to plant
11:23 AM DrippityDrops: Then it just ships the rolls to the consumer and the roll out each row of foods
11:23 AM SpeedEvil: for various reasons
11:23 AM archivist: http://uk.businessinsider.com/farming-robot-farmbot-automatically-grow-vegetables-backyard-garden-2016-7?r=US&IR=T
11:23 AM DrippityDrops: yeah, I dont really see people buying those tho
11:24 AM DrippityDrops: i mean maybe it it was about the size of a dog and could go around individually placing things and coming back to a home base
11:24 AM archivist: a drone and a spade
11:24 AM DrippityDrops: genius
11:25 AM DrippityDrops: really though why wouldnt a person just buy long rolls of evenly spaced seeds in a biodegradable nutrient strong roll which retains water
11:25 AM DrippityDrops: roll it out bury it at specified depth and water
11:26 AM DrippityDrops: it would make laying out large flower gardens something a person could do online, then ANY landscaper could lay it down and it would come out right
11:26 AM DrippityDrops: j/s
11:27 AM archivist: but first the clueless gardener has to measure the plot

11:33 AM nos: Summoning an angineer?
11:33 AM JT-Shop: I made a perch and the little chicks are already using it
11:33 AM SpeedEvil: :)
11:34 AM nos: ~engineer
11:34 AM DrippityDrops: ohhh, they already make the stuff it looks like
11:34 AM DrippityDrops: they call it "seed tape"
11:34 AM DrippityDrops: https://www.google.com/search?q=seed+tape&client=ubuntu&hs=5bu&channel=fs&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&sqi=2&ved=0ahUKEwjrqrbd8rDTAhXH5oMKHYRWCvUQ_AUIBygC&biw=1440&bih=748
11:34 AM nos: I swear someone intercepts my communications and inserts typos.
11:34 AM Jymmm: seed tape has been around for years/decades
11:35 AM DrippityDrops: well yeah but a cnc machine which can lay it out exactly how you want it has not
11:35 AM Jymmm: you unroll it, you water it, done.
11:35 AM Jymmm: KISS
11:36 AM DrippityDrops: thats what I said
11:36 AM DrippityDrops: I think people would love it
11:36 AM nos: Farmers use differential GPS for stuff like sowing.
11:37 AM DrippityDrops: they could go online layout their garden and hit buy and the machine does every vegetable they want where they want, they just have to lay out the strips according to some map legend
11:37 AM DrippityDrops: im talking about your backyard gardener
11:38 AM Jymmm: nos: Yeah, but that's commercial. And where does one park a half-a-million-dollar machine?
11:38 AM SpeedEvil: Jymmm: Wherever it wants.
11:38 AM Jymmm: SpeedEvil++
11:38 AM SpeedEvil: Oh - no - wait - that's a gorilla with a machine gun.
11:38 AM Jymmm: SpeedEvil: eh, safe diff
11:39 AM Jymmm: same*
11:40 AM nos: People use Google Sketchup to model their homes.
11:41 AM SpeedEvil: Above is data capture for such an effort
11:42 AM nos: SLAM, simultaneous location and mapping, is commonplace... It's less common to turn the point clouds into polygons though.
11:42 AM JT-Shop: they already have seed planters the lay out larger seeds
11:43 AM nos: or crushing the data to find large polygons like walls...
11:54 AM roycroft: my qctp has shipped already - it should arrive by week's end
11:54 AM roycroft: now i really need to get going on building a stand for my lathe, so i can start testing it/playing with it
12:04 PM Jymmm: SpeedEvil: "Gorilla with a machine gun".. I LIKE IT!!!
12:06 PM archivist: roycroft, one of mine is on an old office table, another is on wheels as part of a broadcast video recorder frame
12:08 PM roycroft: i've decided, archivist, to build an open frame out of 1-1/2" tubing
12:08 PM roycroft: i'll use the chip tray as the top surface
12:08 PM roycroft: and i'll eventually build some cabinets with drawers to go underneath
12:09 PM roycroft: this way i can get the thing built quickly
12:09 PM roycroft: and it will be a lot easier to set the lathe down on the stand if there aren't cabinets underneath
12:09 PM archivist: the clockmakers lathe has a wooden surface with an edge to catch the chips
12:10 PM archivist: flatness/twist is not really an issue for that sort of lathe
12:10 PM roycroft: ack
12:10 PM roycroft: that reminds me
12:10 PM roycroft: i need to see if i have levelling feet for the stand in stock
12:11 PM roycroft: and i'm not at home today, so i won't be able to check until late afternoon
12:11 PM roycroft: i was hoping to fabricate the stand this weekend
12:11 PM roycroft: well even if i don't have the feet i can make the stand and paint it
12:11 PM roycroft: and install the feet when they arrvive
12:11 PM roycroft: arrive
12:11 PM roycroft: i'm going to try to level this lathe as best i can
12:12 PM archivist: with some you need the frame good enough to fix the lathe twist
12:13 PM roycroft: i'll build the stand with leveling feet, and get it as level as possible
12:13 PM roycroft: i can level the lathe with shims
12:13 PM roycroft: i just ordered a big boring bar holder and 1" boring bar so i can cut the threads on the faceplate i'll need to make
12:14 PM roycroft: i figure that will be a lot more rigid than the 5/8" boring bars i have
12:15 PM roycroft: i'm not a great machinist, but i'm going to make every effort to make that faceplate as accurately as possible
12:16 PM archivist: the hard part is measuring the nose, no testing while turning it :)
12:16 PM roycroft: i'm going to make a dummy spindle end as a gage
12:17 PM roycroft: i was just reading that i should mount a bar between centers to put a little pressure on the spindle while facing the backing plate, to eliminate any spindle end play
12:17 PM archivist: I did not because the register is suppose to be the accurate bit, the thread can have some clearance
12:18 PM roycroft: i assume i should do that by mounting a center in the spindle taper itself
12:18 PM roycroft: i think the spindle is mt5
12:18 PM roycroft: i'll measure that when i get a chance (probably when i don't have to crawl on the floor to measure)
12:19 PM roycroft: there should be no end play though, so if there is i should probably address that first
12:20 PM {HD}: If I am switching LinuxCNC machines do I just need the contents of the 'my-mill' folder?
12:20 PM roycroft: and yes, the register is the accurate bit, but i've only ever turned one inside thread before
12:21 PM roycroft: having a gage would make me feel better about what i'm doing
12:22 PM roycroft: and i haven't done any real lathe work in several years
12:22 PM * roycroft will be spending a lot of time just getting comfortable with the new machine
12:23 PM {HD}: I backed up the 'configs' folder...I hope that is all I need
12:24 PM archivist: you can rename my-mill to something more sensible
12:25 PM IchGucksLive: hi all from a expecting freezing cold night germany
12:25 PM {HD}: archivist: mine is really called 'my-badass-mill' but I thought I would use the default here. But that should be all I need to save...right?
12:26 PM archivist: usually
12:26 PM IchGucksLive: i got a cheesiesst_ever
12:26 PM IchGucksLive: and ofcause a icandoit
12:29 PM {HD}: So for LinuxCNC I don't want to use the nvidia driver...right? Should I use noueva or just a generic?
12:29 PM archivist: I named one wormtest
12:29 PM archivist: generic usually
12:31 PM {HD}: Cool, I am going to load this new system since I got my parport hardware in the mail today.
12:44 PM roycroft: archivist: this article suggests that the register has no effect on the accuracy of the chuck fitment
12:44 PM roycroft: http://lathes.co.uk/latheparts/page7.html
12:48 PM IchGucksLive: {HD}: BOB or pc internals
12:49 PM {HD}: IchGucksLive: I just recieved an internal pci parport card. I have been building my config files off an old computer so I could just xfer it to the new machine when the hardware arrived.
12:49 PM {HD}: and that day is today!
12:49 PM IchGucksLive: good luck
12:49 PM * {HD} found this educational https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SzBFJ7oRo8c
12:49 PM IchGucksLive: beaware of port name changes
12:50 PM IchGucksLive: sudo dmesg | grep par*
12:50 PM IchGucksLive: this will tell you the name of the parport
12:50 PM archivist: roycroft, er wot, I dont see any errors of the drawing
12:51 PM Jymmm: SpeedEvil: YEAH BABY!!! http://i.imgur.com/jDHYHLJ.gif
12:52 PM archivist: roycroft, scale of the spigot is out though
12:53 PM archivist: spigot face usually non contact, outer recess is the contact face as drawing shows
12:54 PM roycroft: if you read the text, towards the end it says that the register may have no effect on the accuracy of the mount, and that the author has seen several cases where the register has been bored out oversize with no ill effect at all
12:54 PM roycroft: i'm not talking about the faceplate to chuck registration
12:54 PM roycroft: er, backing plate to chuck
12:55 PM roycroft: but rather the backing plate to spindle
12:55 PM roycroft: nevertheless, my plan was to replicate the outer surface of the spindle as accurately as possible with my gage
12:55 PM archivist: I imaging he got away with the taper of the threads
12:55 PM archivist: imagine
12:56 PM archivist: I see variation from crappy mounts, do the best you can
12:56 PM roycroft: yes
12:56 PM roycroft: and this particular mount is for a 4 jaw
12:56 PM roycroft: so dead on accuracy is not really required
12:57 PM roycroft: but i want to make it as accurate as possible
12:57 PM IchGucksLive: roycroft: you can do it we all belive in your
12:57 PM archivist: I want to take chuck and item off try against something remount and finish
12:58 PM IchGucksLive: professionalisem
12:58 PM roycroft: ichguckslive: i'm not a terribly experience machinist, and i haven't turned on a "real" lathe in several years
12:58 PM roycroft: i'll take care
12:58 PM roycroft: but that doesn't guarantee good results
12:58 PM IchGucksLive: agree i did last yeaterday TR20x4 D45 reducing to 40
12:58 PM IchGucksLive: to fit the ECS20 mounts
12:58 PM roycroft: and i'll practice in scrap a few times before approaching the real piece
12:59 PM roycroft: i've only turned one internal thread with a single point tool before
12:59 PM IchGucksLive: last 0,02 is always the masterpice
12:59 PM roycroft: and that was a through thread
12:59 PM roycroft: i'll be dealing with a shoulder on this one
12:59 PM roycroft: i think
12:59 PM IchGucksLive: on a scale that counts 0.1
01:00 PM IchGucksLive: and a tread on 8mm with 2mm backlash
01:00 PM IchGucksLive: as some schools have in place
01:01 PM IchGucksLive: i do this now for around 50 years so then you know how to work on cheesy crappy mashines to a max accuracy
01:01 PM Gene393: Winner winner chicken dinner!!!
01:01 PM Gene393: Anyone have a cheaper source for one of these? http://www.ebay.com/itm/5-INCH-SUPER-LOCK-VISE-FOR-NC-CNC-MACHINES-3900-0171-/351636268292?hash=item51df27a504:g:aOQAAOSw-zxWomkl
01:01 PM roycroft: i know, for the most part, the things i need to do to turn accurately
01:01 PM roycroft: whether i can actually do them is another issue :)
01:01 PM IchGucksLive: Gene393: KFC
01:01 PM DrippityDrops: Gene393: how many> and used?
01:01 PM roycroft: and yay
01:02 PM roycroft: seller took a much lower offer for the boring bar holder than his asking price
01:02 PM roycroft: and has already shipped, within minutes of accepting my offer
01:02 PM Gene393: 1, preferably new but am open
01:02 PM roycroft: sadly, i went with a phase ii aloris-style tool post system
01:02 PM DrippityDrops: wherebouts do you live? shipping can be rough on such items?
01:03 PM roycroft: the price differential between that and the multifix was just too much for me right now
01:03 PM archivist: roycroft, for some threading I use inserts and a home made holder
01:03 PM Gene393: middle of USA
01:03 PM roycroft: but i'm going to hold off on buying a lot of tool holders, so that i might change to multifix later
01:03 PM roycroft: archivist: this is what i just got
01:04 PM roycroft: http://www.ebay.com/itm/132148896411
01:04 PM IchGucksLive: Gene393: 6inch on 140 New
01:04 PM Crom: morning
01:05 PM Gene393: I have a 6", need a 5"
01:05 PM roycroft: http://www.ebay.com/itm/162427686496
01:05 PM roycroft: i thought a 1" diameter bar would be a lot more rigid than a 5/8" bar
01:05 PM Gene393: morning Crom
01:05 PM roycroft: and i can make my tooling for it
01:06 PM roycroft: i have lots and lots of 5/16" cutters
01:06 PM roycroft: and i have a nice grinder
01:06 PM archivist: roycroft, other option is old HSS tooling and grinding them up to suit
01:06 PM roycroft: yes, that's what i'll be doing
01:06 PM roycroft: as inserts for that bar
01:07 PM Jymmm: Anyone in Nevada?
01:07 PM roycroft: a bunch of hookers and gamblers?

01:09 PM IchGucksLive: Loetmichel: heute nacht wird es kalt Brrr
01:10 PM IchGucksLive: im off gn8 heading up the house
01:10 PM nos: Anybody tried using WD40 and sodium bicarbonate for a lapping lube? :)
01:11 PM nos: the sodium bicarbonate kept my stone from loading up. It's pretty neat!
01:12 PM CaptHindsight: nos: where did the material go?
01:13 PM nos: Into the oil. I wiped it off and reapplied.
01:13 PM archivist: it stopped it cutting so no loading :)
01:13 PM nos: :P
01:13 PM nos: no it was cutting
01:13 PM nos: I have the shiny thing to proove it! :D
01:14 PM nos: Sodium bicarbonate is also used as soap.
01:14 PM nos: And regular hand soap worked to clean the stone.
01:17 PM Gene393: DrippityDrops - are you in the vise business?
01:17 PM CaptHindsight: was this on aluminum or steel?
01:18 PM nos: I tried it on both.
01:18 PM nos: Both got shiny.
01:22 PM CaptHindsight: sodium bicarbonate dry or mixed with W#D40?
01:22 PM nos: mixed
01:23 PM nos: Dried soda crystal, which turns into powder. With the WD40 it's like a paste.
01:24 PM * roycroft notes that media blasting with soda is the latest fad on this side of the pond
01:27 PM nos: It's also a fad here in Finland.
01:27 PM roycroft: so for future planning
01:28 PM roycroft: what size tool post grinder would fit a 12x36 lathe well?
01:28 PM roycroft: as in horsepower
01:28 PM roycroft: 3/4hp?
01:29 PM nos: It doesn't handle forces transaxial to the spindle very well.
01:30 PM nos: If you have something solid to bolt the lathe to, you might be able to use that much power.
01:31 PM roycroft: does that mean you think it's perhaps a bit too much to be a good match?
01:32 PM nos: I'm not sure. The spindle motor on the one I own is 500W DC.
01:33 PM nos: So the grinder would be 250W more.
01:33 PM roycroft: a tool post grinder is way down on my list of things to get
01:33 PM nos: But at the same time, the lower-power grinders aren't very good.
01:33 PM roycroft: but i'm always on the look out for bargains, so i like to have my lists well-defined
01:35 PM roycroft: a collet chuck is also going on the list, and would be a higher priority
01:35 PM roycroft: but still down the road a way if i were to just go buy it
01:35 PM roycroft: if a great deal falls in my lap today, though, i'd like to be able to take advantage of it
01:36 PM Crom: figures... go to work on tweaking z home and I have a home switch wire break...
01:49 PM CaptHindsight: nos: you might also want to try aluminum oxide, it's available down to a few nm dia powder
01:52 PM Gene393: Yo DippityDrops!
01:55 PM nos: CaptHindsight: will do. Apparently there is stuff which breaks down as you use it too. Tom Lipton had a video about it.
01:57 PM CaptHindsight: silicon carbide is even harder https://www.amazon.com/Silicon-Carbide-Powder-Green-1200/dp/B00BM8KTS2
01:58 PM nos: That's not a bad price.
01:58 PM CaptHindsight: tooth paste is another cheap option
01:58 PM nos: Oh right, now that you mention it.
01:59 PM nos: I'll give that a go too.
01:59 PM CaptHindsight: pumice is even lower cost
01:59 PM nos: I like shiny things. :3
02:02 PM CaptHindsight: you might have an equivalent there of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bar_Keepers_Friend
02:02 PM nos: Not sure about using acids in polishing...
02:23 PM CaptHindsight: more a fan of crystal tearing their way through metals vs molecules slowly being pulled from the surface?
02:27 PM nos: Well I know electroplating results in a bit of a moonscape...
02:27 PM nos: And that I can control a cutting process pretyy well.
02:29 PM nos: I haven't seen the result of acid polishing.
02:44 PM {HD}: UGH! Why am I inside? It is such a nice day!
03:43 PM {HD}: Well, it seems fragged...the PCI card I recieved today bonked my whole system...
03:51 PM enleth: ok, this might be a dumb question, but - how to make the spindle speed set with F11-F12 in axis "stick" across spindle stops?
04:04 PM Deejay: gn8
04:15 PM Crom_: enleth, I think that's in the source... F11-F12 I think is a % change isn't it?
04:16 PM enleth: perhaps, I'm not really sure
04:16 PM XXCoder: 2020 inside connectors FINALLY arrived
04:16 PM XXCoder: man waited so long
04:17 PM XXCoder: now to go to work lol laters
04:26 PM yasnak: anyone got any good contacts @ siemens?
04:28 PM andypugh: Not the bit you need.
04:28 PM andypugh: (Actually, my contacts are Continental now)
04:36 PM yasnak: dang
04:36 PM sync_: what do you need yasnak?
04:37 PM yasnak: got a friend who is going to try and help, machine sales rep is forwarding our support email to higher ups. i've had this machine down since monday. the support rep essentially has given no support and when he cannot answer fairly basic questions tells us its us that are wrong.
04:37 PM yasnak: wants us to get onsite consult and tech for 16k
04:37 PM yasnak: I mean I literally have 99.99% of the issue solved, I just need to figure out how to reset the PLC on an 840Di
04:39 PM sync_: ah
04:39 PM yasnak: I have nc/plc archives, I have replacement PLC and UPS bat module. Instead this guy gives me info, tells me to look for pages on the machine that do not exist. I tell him this and he instantly says i'm "not qualified to fix this, sending quote for onsite"
04:39 PM yasnak: then he proceeded to take on my boss which isn't a good idea
04:41 PM sync_: the external plc or the simatic integrated plc?
04:42 PM yasnak: SINUMERIK yeah
04:43 PM yasnak: I wish the company was more supportive, seems the whole yaskawa siemens control and yasnak going belly up ended up with Siemens basically blaming them for issues haha. Really sucks for customers
04:43 PM andypugh: One answer (probably not a sensible one) is a LinuxCNC conversion.
04:44 PM yasnak: Andypugh, I think I might actually build one myself. But a bit more rigid. Some version of a even cheaper shop mill
04:44 PM yasnak: for jigs and such, should be fun
04:47 PM sync_: yasnak: so you want to virginize the s7-300?
04:49 PM yasnak: yeah, I read all about it before...just need a few questions answered
04:50 PM yasnak: But if I essentially flush the MMC, that would allow me to re-read the PLC archives am I right?
04:51 PM sync_: does it have a memory card?
04:52 PM enleth: hm. does a running linuxcnc instance have a capability to change and write back values to the ini file?
04:53 PM andypugh: The Axis “calibrate” menu item does it
05:01 PM yasnak: sync_ thats just it, it has all sorts of cards
05:02 PM yasnak: including a hard drive
05:03 PM yasnak: These are the basic issues I have, I cannot restore the PLC due to it apparently not being 'reset/cleared??' I know, its basic. Yet I don't want to brick a machine without knowing what I'm doing. Just downloaded the 840Di book, plan to take it into the bathroom for some much needed breaktime
05:03 PM yasnak: Wow that sounded weird.
05:03 PM andypugh: Each to their own
05:04 PM sync_: you should be able to remove the mmc card in the s7 and just reset it
05:04 PM sync_: and then replace the card
05:10 PM Crom_: ARGH)(*#^$*)&#_)&%()*$*# fusion360 says, not I can't do that helical... http://picpaste.com/CantDothishelical-OjfuMeWl.png
05:19 PM yasnak: just like formatting a floppy?
05:19 PM Crom_: what the heck?
05:19 PM yasnak: see, seems too easy. something that would totally f me :P
05:22 PM roycroft: what's a floppy?
05:22 PM roycroft: other than what all old men have
05:26 PM Crom_: didn't change anything and it's working now

07:57 PM roycroft: i don't think i have any 2501s any more
07:57 PM roycroft: but there might be a couple up in the attic
07:58 PM roycroft: i think they're worth $1.95 these days
07:58 PM roycroft: canadian
07:58 PM roycroft: and that much only if they come with a power cord
07:58 PM roycroft: but they can do t1 speed!
07:59 PM Crom_: has a 10base T interface conveter hanging off the ethernet port
07:59 PM * roycroft has a bunch of aui adapters
07:59 PM roycroft: aui to bnc and aui to rj45 both
07:59 PM Crom_: AUI! I was thinking UAI... no that ain't right...
07:59 PM sync_: I have to support some yellowcable setup D:
08:00 PM sync_: due to legacy reasons
08:00 PM Crom_: not anymore! I left all that behind when I became gainfully disabled and started receiving that check..
08:01 PM roycroft: i hope that when docker support is folded into freenas the jail/plugin thing isn't eliminated
08:02 PM roycroft: or that there will be a way to migrate the databases from jails to the new docker thing
08:02 PM roycroft: i spent hours configuring my plex media database after moving my data to the freenas server
08:02 PM Crom_: Apr 25th I have an appointment for my 9 freaking year old remanded disability case... If I can game it right, I might be able to get a 230K USB check... more likely.. 50 to 120K check...
08:02 PM roycroft: many hours
08:02 PM roycroft: more time doing that then building/testing the machine, i think
08:02 PM Crom_: USdollar... USD
08:03 PM roycroft: that would be a nice chunk of change
08:03 PM roycroft: and forgive that extended mischan above
08:03 PM roycroft: i can't keep track of what channel i'm on today :)
08:03 PM roycroft: fortunately i haven't said anything embarrassing on the wrong channel yet
08:04 PM roycroft: i sold my old router jig today and that money paid for my qctp
08:04 PM Crom_: psssh... mis channel... embarassing? I don't hang out in those channels
08:04 PM roycroft: i'm happy with that
08:04 PM Crom_: my wife let me get mine for a xmas pressy
08:04 PM roycroft: i put a bunch of stuff on cl this past weekend
08:05 PM roycroft: hoping to make some quick cash to pump into the lathe
08:05 PM roycroft: well the engine blew up in my car a month ago
08:05 PM Crom_: I have 2 cast iron sinks I need to put on CL
08:05 PM roycroft: and it cost me $3k for a new engine
08:05 PM roycroft: i'm really stretched for cash right now
08:05 PM roycroft: and a bit beyond my comfort level for carrying credit card debt (although it's all at 0%)
08:05 PM roycroft: so no more plastic to pay for things for a while
08:06 PM roycroft: and i want my lathe to be functional soon
08:06 PM Crom_: hehe... January the VA shorted me $300+ buck... and $80 last month
08:07 PM roycroft: i bought paint last month for another project that is now on hold
08:07 PM roycroft: but it's the paint i would use on a lathe stand and lathe, so that's good
08:07 PM roycroft: although i doubt i'll paint this lathe right away
08:08 PM Crom_: my wife and I are living on $534 a month I get from the VA except when they short me, and a $325 grandma trust check and $300ish she gets sewing a month averaged over the year..
08:08 PM roycroft: i need to get it up on a stand and see what i have before i do anything else
08:08 PM roycroft: that's pretty tight
08:08 PM Crom_: right now... there is no sewing money until may...
08:08 PM roycroft: i hope you don't have a lot of bills
08:09 PM Crom_: and we didn't pay any bills this month to afford H&R block for taxes
08:09 PM roycroft: i won't complain about my situation any more :)
08:10 PM Crom_: gas, $30 a month, electric $75, water $56, phones $120, car gas $150, food $250
08:13 PM Crom_: I just put in for a waiver on my VA copays which I shouldn't be paying anyway... tht'll get me back $400 or so... I put in for some more disabilities in august and january.. it's looking like that might be finished in June to August... Then there is my remand.... so I MIGHT have money by this summer...
08:14 PM * Jymmm hands Crom_ a pair of fishnet stockings.... WORK IT BABY! WORK IT!! WORK IT!!!! SHAKE THAT MONEY MAKER!!!
08:16 PM Crom_: Jymmm, hehe... already have the fishnets.. I do the Frankenfurter costume every once in a while.. (Rocky horror picture show)
08:16 PM Jymmm: Crom_: Nice!
08:18 PM Crom_: Also do a Piraena Scourge of the southern seas. Pirate in a pink tutu... I have a Pie-rat Rubber Rat with a Green Bay Cheese Hat. on my shoulder
08:19 PM Crom_: The manly men who can't do ridiculous piss me off...
08:20 PM Crom_: I grew up on Monty Python and Bennie Hill... Fry and Lurie...
08:21 PM Crom_: Had a guy say I'm not wearing that dress... It's a girls... I asked him... how did he know that? Did he dod a DNA test on the cotton to see if it was from a female or male plant?
08:23 PM Crom_: I also lived in Malaysia... so I ran around in a Sarong for the last 6 months we were in country..
08:26 PM Crom_: bbiab getting Ciggy Butts
08:40 PM Crom_: back and scored a leather office chair
08:41 PM Jymmm: Hmmm.... butts and chairs
08:41 PM * Jymmm is seeing a pattern here.
08:41 PM Crom_: someone left by the dumpster
08:41 PM Jymmm: which?
08:41 PM Crom_: the chair
08:41 PM Jymmm: ah
08:54 PM CaptHindsight: I avoid dumpster butts
08:58 PM jdh: I avoid dumpsters and butts
09:09 PM Jymmm: jdh: liar
09:20 PM {HD}: Hey, If you wanted to do a pen plotter thing (short term) would you just chuck a pen up in your ER collet?
09:21 PM {HD}: I am thinking cutting a bic down in size and just putting it in the collet. It would be nice if there was some springyness to it but I want it to be simple.
09:25 PM roycroft: folks test their new cnc routers by chucking a sharpie up and drawing a picture all the time
09:25 PM roycroft: it's almost a rite of passage
09:27 PM {HD}: A sharpie has some give in the felt tip. I want to use a pen...Should I worry about making a springy tensioner.
09:27 PM roycroft: or find a ball point pen with a spring in it
09:27 PM roycroft: i've used some that have them
09:27 PM {HD}: Oh, and its not to test the machine, it works great, I just want to plot some things.
09:28 PM roycroft: or you can buy some ball point pen refills and make your onw pen holder with a spring
09:28 PM roycroft: own
09:28 PM {HD}: I guess I could just stick a spring in there somehow...Ill go grab my box of extra writing utensils.
09:28 PM Crom_: or weight...
09:28 PM roycroft: a bic pen will have a plastic tube ink reservoir
09:29 PM roycroft: which would be difficult to manage
09:29 PM roycroft: but a refill will be metal
09:29 PM roycroft: and you could pretty easily make a spring-loaded holder for it
09:30 PM {HD}: Yea, Ill make something since It would be nice to be able to chuck it up when ever I wanted....
09:32 PM roycroft: https://salem.craigslist.org/bfs/6076073789.html
09:32 PM roycroft: you can make some big parts with that
09:32 PM {HD}: wow
09:34 PM roycroft: i'm happy with the lathe i got - it's almost the perfect size
09:34 PM roycroft: a 13" swing might have been nice
09:34 PM roycroft: but 12" is fine
09:35 PM roycroft: and i don't think i ever need anything that's more than 36" between centers
09:35 PM roycroft: but sometimes there are monster lathes available for less than scrap price, simply because hardly anyone wants them, and they're expensive to haul away to the scrap yard
09:36 PM {HD}: I don't know what good lathe prices are... This came up today and I was interested at first but then I was like ... seems expensive ... http://imgur.com/a/CIuFk
09:36 PM roycroft: "good price" varies by region
09:36 PM {HD}: roycroft: what would you pay for that pictured?
09:36 PM roycroft: that's a $2000 lathe around here
09:37 PM roycroft: but an $800 lathe in some parts of the country
09:37 PM roycroft: maybe a $2500 lathe around here
09:37 PM roycroft: i would buy it for $400 :)
09:38 PM {HD}: Wow, I want to be in the $800 part of the country
09:39 PM roycroft: andypugh would pay £200 for it :P
10:00 PM Crom_: if I had the money I'd so buy that and take it to Orange Empire Rail Museum
10:01 PM Crom_: the 36 monarch.. the south bend... Vista Steam and Gas Engine Museum
10:02 PM Crom_: south bend is $1200 here
10:08 PM Gene_home: any cheaper solutions for the following? http://www.ebay.com/itm/5-INCH-SUPER-LOCK-VISE-FOR-NC-CNC-MACHINES-3900-0171-/351636268292?hash=item51df27a504:g:aOQAAOSw-zxWomkl

10:18 PM Gene_home: that one is pulling at me.........

10:21 PM Gene_home: I admit I am lazy tonight... what is recommended to generate g-code. I use to use mastercam back in 1995...
10:23 PM Crom_: fusion 360 is easiest these days..
10:25 PM Gene_home: is the education license full featured?
10:27 PM Tom_itx: puobably not
10:28 PM Crom_: use the hobbiest/maker one
10:29 PM Gene_home: ?? i see standard for $300, and ultimate for 1,500 per year
10:30 PM Tom_itx: i know catia student isn't what the full one is
10:30 PM Tom_itx: not sure about some of the others
10:32 PM Gene_home: lets assume i have 3-5 axis machine
10:32 PM Tom_itx: i still use smartcam that i had way back when
10:33 PM Tom_itx: old and outdated but does full 3d
10:33 PM Tom_itx: no 5 axis though
10:33 PM Tom_itx: not sure what a seat of mastercam goes for nowdays
10:34 PM Gene_home: looks like mastercam has 50% of the market
10:36 PM Gene_home: wow... there are no clear winners here unless you have deep pocket book
10:44 PM Gene_home: thanks Crom for the sound info
10:46 PM enleth: soooo, I've found a Fanuc S-420W on an auction for $1500, throws fuse blown errors on bootup
10:46 PM enleth: best case, it's a simple repair
10:46 PM enleth: worst case, I get a quite hefty robot arm to build a new controller for
10:47 PM Gene_home: anyone using solidcam
10:47 PM enleth: it's older than I'd like, something newer than 1995 would be preferable, but chances are, I'm not going to find anything newer so cheap for a long time
10:48 PM enleth: 90% chance it's got resolvers and AC servos, stmbl should handle them
10:50 PM enleth: heck, I just might go ahead and buy it
10:54 PM enleth: pcw_home: is there a way to turn some IO pins on the 7i76e expansion connectors into serial interfaces accessible by linuxcnc? FPGA
10:54 PM enleth: *FPGA firmware modification counts as "a way" for me if it's not horribly complex
11:04 PM pcw_home: enleth: standard UARTs or sserial interfaces?
11:05 PM enleth: standard UART, to talk to some custom hardware
11:05 PM enleth: tl;dr I'd like to use one of the expansion connectors for an operator's panel and while the GPIOs are just fine for buttons, I'd rather use serial to output data for a display
11:06 PM pcw_home: Sure, I think there's a driver for the PacketUART someone did for a Gyro interface
11:06 PM pcw_home: otherwise you would probably need to write a comp
11:07 PM enleth: is it a software bitbang (like SPI in https://github.com/LinuxCNC/linuxcnc/blob/master/src/hal/components/max31855.comp) or implemented on the FPGA?
11:07 PM enleth: I mean, PacketUART
11:08 PM pcw_home: No, there's a PktUart firmware module and at least a sample driver
11:10 PM pcw_home: its designed for high baud rates (should do up to 20 mbits/sec with 7I76E's 100 Mhz ClockLow)
11:10 PM pcw_home: (5x oversampling)
11:14 PM enleth: pcw_home: OK, thanks, I found the sources in hostmot2 and the VHDL module
11:14 PM chopper791: Good evening... Anything good happening?
11:14 PM enleth: pcw_home: now I just need to figure out how to configure it to use the IO pins I want
11:17 PM chopper791: Forum must be down again
11:17 PM pcw_home: that means making a new PIN_xxx file (clone an existing 7I76E pinout file and add the UART stuff)
11:20 PM enleth: pcw_home: are IOBITS<17>..IOBITS<50> in the 7i76e.ucf the same thing as IO17..IO50 on the expansion connectors?
11:53 PM pcw_home: yes
11:54 PM pcw_home: but the ucf file is not ever changed
11:55 PM pcw_home: all configuration settings are done in the PIN_xxxxx.vhd file
11:56 PM Tom_itx: pcw_home, I was wondering how you set the permissions on the directory you post for custom bit files to give access to the file but not the rest of the directory
11:56 PM Tom_itx: i have a similar need for this
11:57 PM Tom_itx: so individuals can get their file but not the others
11:57 PM Tom_itx: unless they specifically know what it is
11:57 PM Crom: Apache web server?
11:57 PM Tom_itx: yeah
11:57 PM Tom_itx: debian 8 iirc
11:58 PM Crom: yeah... lemme look... it's the permissions file.. you turn off browse...
11:59 PM roycroft: mode 711
11:59 PM Tom_itx: but can it be just for a particular directory?
11:59 PM roycroft: make the directory executable by other but not readable by other
