12:16 AM BipolarBear is now known as Boomerangutan
12:19 AM Boomerangutan is now known as MervPumpkinhead
01:08 AM MacGalempsy: hello
01:49 AM Cromaglious_: Yo Mac
02:14 AM archivist: before the UK made bridgeport there was this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/142319965364?ul_noapp=true
02:19 AM varesa_ is now known as varesa
03:03 AM mrpackethead: a bridge port conversion might be quite cool
03:16 AM Deejay: moin
04:31 AM enleth: archivist: you sure it's not Irish?
04:31 AM enleth: looks like a couple huge potatoes welded together
04:37 AM gonzo_: I'm in the middle of doing a bridgeport
04:37 AM gonzo_: converting a manual series one
04:46 AM Mac-Phone is now known as MacGalempsy
04:46 AM MacGalempsy: morning
04:54 AM XXCoder: yo
04:59 AM XXCoder: whats up
05:35 AM archivist: enleth, the adcock and shipley was made 30 miles from me, the iron was very good, they later made the UK bridgeports under license
05:36 AM XXCoder: just 400 euro whats wrong with it
05:36 AM XXCoder: and dang milling head is huge.,
05:39 AM MacGalempsy: nothin killin time until the shift ends at 060p
05:39 AM MacGalempsy: 0600
05:39 AM MacGalempsy: the pulser went out, so they are pulling out of the hole (POOH)
05:41 AM MacGalempsy: the pulser sends data up the hole on the mud.
05:42 AM XXCoder: aw heh
05:42 AM archivist: if it is still on the end of the tube :)
05:43 AM XXCoder: they will discover it was eaten off
05:44 AM MacGalempsy: its there, it just sends data after it shuts off. since the mud weighs too much the weak spring doesnt let it turn off
05:46 AM jthornton: morning
05:46 AM XXCoder: hey jt welcome back
05:48 AM enleth: archivist: yeah, I know, just making fun of the bulbous shape
05:50 AM jthornton: I had to shut down hexchat and reload it to connect...
05:51 AM XXCoder: fun
06:04 AM MacGalempsy: well guys. have a productive day. im outta here.
06:07 AM XXCoder: https://imgur.com/gallery/kuAYZ
06:15 AM enleth: have you ever seen a lathe that uses the chuck key as a spindle start switch handle?
06:38 AM evilren: thats kind of genius
06:38 AM evilren: like, is it internally splined for a chuck key?
06:39 AM XXCoder: it'd definitely make it immune to loss
06:39 AM evilren: or just a chuck key shaft size hole in it
06:39 AM XXCoder: more or less
06:39 AM XXCoder: (please still have e-stop somewhere, you do NOT want to use chuck key to stop when someones stuck on lathe
06:42 AM sync_: it is super annoying
06:42 AM sync_: there are a few lathes that have a setup like that
10:02 AM {HD}: All right I'm going to the automotive store. I'm buying anti-freeze for my spindle coolant. Do I buy regular or dex-cool?
10:06 AM archivist: trade names mean nothing, is it compatible with the metals and plastics of the cooling system
10:07 AM {HD}: I don't know what the guts of the spindle look like. So, I don't know the answer to that question.
10:13 AM {HD}: The documentation says use water. It also says that if you leave it sit you'll need to use compressed air to blow out the rust. Well, I would like to avoid all of the rust in the first place.
10:16 AM Jymmm: There is food grade glycol as well.
10:17 AM roycroft: being food grade does not make it non-reactive with some metals
10:18 AM Jymmm: wasn't saying it was, just an alternative
10:19 AM Jymmm: ...to water
10:19 AM roycroft: if the documentation says to use water i would use water
10:19 AM {HD}: Just in case I got thirsty while I was down there
10:19 AM roycroft: and devise some way to drain and dry it between uses
10:19 AM archivist: you are looking for non corrosive with your materials and and an additive to stop algae and bacteria
10:19 AM Jymmm: distilled water maybe
10:20 AM archivist: distilled is even more corrosive
10:20 AM Jymmm: archivist: how so?
10:20 AM archivist: actually it dissolves almost anything
10:20 AM {HD}: The universal solvent.
10:21 AM Jymmm: archivist: distilled is (basically) just no mineral deposits
10:21 AM archivist: keep it in a glass bottle and within a short time it will have dissolved some silicon from the glass
10:22 AM {HD}: Well, I'm off. I'll let you know what I come up with.
10:22 AM * roycroft is curious about the composition of the spindle cooling jacket/coil
12:20 PM {HD}: Well, I am cleaning a bucket for my coolant.
12:27 PM Wolf_: hmm sounds like distilled water wouldnt be a good match for laser tube cooling lol
12:36 PM archivist: Wolf_, the amounts are small :)
12:37 PM archivist: just amusing that distilled does not stay pure
12:38 PM Wolf_: so might still be worth doing vs trying to flush algae out of the tube lol
12:39 PM Jymmm: just toss in a tad of sodium, that'll clean it out!
12:41 PM archivist: sodium chlorate and sugar will "clear" stuff quickly
12:57 PM CaptHindsight: A Guide to Glycols http://msdssearch.dow.com/PublishedLiteratureDOWCOM/dh_091b/0901b8038091b508.pdf?filepath=propyleneglycol/pdfs/noreg/117-01682.pdf
01:00 PM CaptHindsight: Wolf_: you'll just need to change the coolant every year
01:01 PM CaptHindsight: just like in your car
01:01 PM Wolf_: yeah, thats usually a given, I think a lot of people just use RV antifreeze (water/PG mix)
01:01 PM Wolf_: with the home base laser
01:01 PM {HD}: What's the difference between RV anti-freeze and car anti-freeze?
01:02 PM Wolf_: the glycol type
01:02 PM CaptHindsight: and add a antibacteriacide and antifungicide
01:03 PM Wolf_: RV/boat anti-freeze is non-toxic, in RVs its usually used in the drinking water lines and plumbing traps
01:03 PM CaptHindsight: http://www.chemicalspec.com/Winter_Care_4060_RV_Antifreeze.pdf
01:03 PM Jymmm: To not pollute water (lakes/streams) I'd suspect.
01:04 PM Wolf_: not to kill the people using the camper either
01:04 PM Jymmm: Wolf_: Nah,
01:04 PM djdelorie: in the PC water cooling world, a bit of silver in the system somewhere can act as an anti-bacterial too, if you don't want chemicals in there
01:04 PM CaptHindsight: auto anitifreeze typically uses https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethylene_glycol
01:05 PM CaptHindsight: which has much higher toxicity that propylene glycol used in RV antifreeze and some foods
01:05 PM Jymmm: CaptHindsight: Which is sweet tasting and why animals are attracted to it, though toxic to them.
01:05 PM Wolf_: toss some old silverware in the bottom of the coolant tank?
01:05 PM CaptHindsight: too sweet for me :)
01:06 PM Jymmm: CaptHindsight: PG is in all kinds of foods/cosmetics, also used in vaping liquids, fog machines, etc.
01:07 PM CaptHindsight: Jymmm: I use it in products I make as well
01:07 PM Jymmm: CaptHindsight: such as?
01:08 PM CaptHindsight: Jymmm: how far should this tangent go?
01:08 PM Jymmm: CaptHindsight: Till I'll impressed
01:09 PM CaptHindsight: adult desert toppings, floor polishes, etc
01:10 PM CaptHindsight: not to be confused with adult dessert toppings
01:11 PM Jymmm: CaptHindsight: what s does the PG do to the toppings? consistancy? gloss? texture?
01:11 PM {HD}: Ha
01:12 PM CaptHindsight: Jymmm: see pages 28-32 of the glycol pdf
01:13 PM CaptHindsight: will require some reading so my apologies
01:18 PM Jymmm: CaptHindsight: cottage cheese, um, yeah
01:23 PM IchGucksLive: hi
01:24 PM Jymmm: Is there such a thing as a alcohol soluble high voltage dielectric?
01:24 PM IchGucksLive: CaptHindsight: ethlen_G is the same as wine
01:25 PM IchGucksLive: Jymmm: dont use anything that steams as a explosiv
01:26 PM Jymmm: IchGucksLive: Nah, no nictrocellulose
01:26 PM Jymmm: nitro*
01:27 PM pcw_home: Jymmm: pitch
01:28 PM Jymmm: pcw_home: Really?
01:28 PM Jymmm: ,,,on the dielectric part I mean
01:28 PM pcw_home: yep I've seen HV transformers potted in pitch
01:29 PM pcw_home: ( it flows very very slowly at room temp)
01:29 PM Jymmm: pcw_home: Any idea on how they're sourcing the pitch? I got pine trees, but can get THAT much pitch from them
01:29 PM Jymmm: can't*
01:30 PM IchGucksLive: Jymmm: http://www.orthwein-oel.de/PDFs/Dielectric.pdf
01:31 PM IchGucksLive: this is the one that most mashine provider here in Eu favorite
01:31 PM Jymmm: IchGucksLive: I don't read german.
01:31 PM pcw_home: no idea where you get bulk pitch
01:32 PM Jymmm: pcw_home: Huh, interesitng... https://www.amazon.com/1-Lb-Pine-Gum-Rosin/dp/B00JFF6XP2
01:33 PM CaptHindsight: Jymmm: India https://dir.indiamart.com/impcat/coal-tar-pitch.html
01:33 PM IchGucksLive: Jymmm: did you read the wikipedia on it
01:33 PM Jymmm: Just read that asphalt might be a dielectric too
01:33 PM CaptHindsight: when you are there please pick up some Biryani for me
01:34 PM Jymmm: CaptHindsight: Nah, you only get naan
01:35 PM Jymmm: plain, not garlic or nuttin!
01:35 PM Jymmm: CaptHindsight: Though, you could make an afghani salad
01:35 PM {HD}: I did a 10 minute run test. The spindle ran at 20°F above Ambient. The reservoir increased by 10°F.
01:40 PM IchGucksLive: {HD}: you are the cool man
01:41 PM IchGucksLive: {HD}: is it a standard one lkike hyanyang
01:41 PM IchGucksLive: 24kRpm 1hp
01:46 PM {HD}: IchGucksLive: it is a huanuang
01:46 PM IchGucksLive: so you grabt the most used
01:47 PM {HD}: I just ran it without the coolant pump on and it exceeded the 10 minute temperature test in 90 seconds.
01:47 PM IchGucksLive: dident you consider a Kress 1050 FME-2
01:57 PM {HD}: I think it's clear I'm going to need a radiator.
01:59 PM Loetmichel: {HD}: which spindle?
02:00 PM Loetmichel: i have an 800W chinese one and a 5 liter bucket as a reservoir is sufficient to stay below 40°
02:00 PM Loetmichel: C
02:00 PM {HD}: http://i.imgur.com/JVz3IX8.jpg
02:01 PM {HD}: Loetmichel: what is the hardest you would want your spindles To get?
02:01 PM {HD}: Lol. Hardest equals hottest*
02:03 PM Loetmichel: and i cant say my setup is pretty sophisticated: https://www.youtube.com/edit?o=U&video_id=a9Ov69t0uwo
02:03 PM Loetmichel: i want it to stay at less than 50°C
02:03 PM Loetmichel: maybe 55, but not above
02:04 PM {HD}: That link is an account to link. I cannot see it.
02:06 PM Loetmichel: uuups
02:07 PM Loetmichel: https://youtu.be/a9Ov69t0uwo <- better?
02:08 PM Loetmichel: i now even have a (kind of) thermometer... is "chicken" to hot? -> http://www.cyrom.org/palbum/main.php?g2_itemId=13048&g2_imageViewsIndex=1
02:08 PM Loetmichel: i think thats calf, not chicken, sorry ;)
02:09 PM {HD}: Lol. That's what my set up currently looks like however I'm running very little coolant just enough to get over the pump intake.
02:10 PM {HD}: What kind of coolant is in that reservoir?
02:10 PM Loetmichel: in the vid it is clear water
02:10 PM Loetmichel: replaced it later with an 1:1 mix of aqua dest and car coolant for aluminium motors
02:10 PM Loetmichel: hence the rose colour in the pic
02:11 PM IchGucksLive: {HD}: may i ask you on the price you soend including vfd and pump
02:12 PM {HD}: Soend?
02:12 PM IchGucksLive: spend
02:12 PM Loetmichel: IchGucksLive: spent... past tense IIRC ;)
02:12 PM {HD}: $200 shipped from ebay. I believe the sellers name was technical.js
02:12 PM IchGucksLive: Thanks im to old for english spoelling
02:13 PM IchGucksLive: is it the real hyanyang with 133 parameters or the fake with only 33
02:13 PM Loetmichel: i know. wasnt meant offensive, just a friendly hint for a fellow german ;)
02:14 PM IchGucksLive: Loetmichel: may i querry you today on a E-motor probelm
02:14 PM {HD}: IchGucksLive: real. Although I also have a 2.2 kW fake.
02:14 PM IchGucksLive: good price
02:14 PM {HD}: http://i.imgur.com/EkV1YfJ.jpg
02:15 PM Loetmichel: you may. but i may not be able to help if its really complicated
02:15 PM IchGucksLive: i saw this
02:16 PM Loetmichel: {HD}: that looks the same as the one i have at the company... had to use my bosses wife to translate the chinese manual ;)
02:16 PM {HD}: Mine came with a reasonably well translated manual in English.
02:17 PM Loetmichel: http://www.cyrom.org/palbum/main.php?g2_itemId=16170&g2_imageViewsIndex=1 <- thats my CNC at the company
02:19 PM Loetmichel: mine was chinese only
02:19 PM {HD}: Looks like a 6040. Did you put a vacuum hold down table on it?
02:19 PM Loetmichel: yes
02:19 PM Loetmichel: made one myself
02:20 PM Loetmichel: luckily my bosses wife is chinese
02:21 PM Loetmichel: still it was fun to get the meaning of "in the middle, circle, power" as "intermediat DC voltage"
02:22 PM {HD}: wow
02:24 PM Loetmichel: she has no technical background and obviously chinese symbols are quite "interpretative" ;)
02:24 PM Loetmichel: funnily it was easier in german.
02:25 PM Loetmichel: the german name for the DC after the primary rectifier is "Zwischenkreissspannung"
02:25 PM Loetmichel: "in between circle voltage"
02:27 PM {HD}: Isnt language fun
02:29 PM Loetmichel: but there were loads of this stuff in that manual
02:30 PM Loetmichel: i had the impression that chinese just take an existing word that somewhat fits and use that as a descrition of anything technical ;)
02:31 PM {HD}: This is my manual http://www.jinlantrade.com/ebay/invertermanual.pdf
02:32 PM {HD}: There are some interesting translations but it makes sence for the most part.
02:34 PM IchGucksLive: Gn8
02:45 PM MervPumpkinhead is now known as insomnia
03:03 PM {HD}: I just did another test. I ran 100% speed for 10 mins. It went up to 91F but stablizied several mins later at 85F...I am pretty happy with that so far. I ordered a raidiator because it could not hurt the setup. I wonder what the with load tests will show.
03:06 PM Deejay: re
03:28 PM roycroft: well my engined blowed up real good - it threw a rod
03:28 PM roycroft: there is a hole in the side of the block
03:30 PM {HD}: roycroft: Picture? I have always wondered what that meant...could throwing a rod kill someone?
03:31 PM roycroft: it means one of the connecting rods did not go up and down as it was supposed to, but instead went sideways through the cylinder wall and out the side of the engine block
03:31 PM roycroft: the throwing of the rod itself would not kill a person
03:31 PM roycroft: the possible seizing of the engine could
03:31 PM roycroft: my engine still ran after that, for some definition of "ran"
03:33 PM {HD}: so, complete replacement or is that something that can be fixed?
03:33 PM roycroft: so now i know that the loud "pop" or "bang" sound was the rod making a hole in the block
03:33 PM roycroft: i would need a new engine block at the very least
03:33 PM roycroft: but the rebuild would be espensive
03:33 PM roycroft: expensive
03:34 PM {HD}: are you going to do it or just get a new car?
03:34 PM roycroft: we're looking at a used, relatively low mileage engine with a warranty
03:34 PM roycroft: i'm making payments on this car
03:34 PM roycroft: i can't get rid of it easily
03:34 PM roycroft: it will probably cost me about $2.5k for a use engine + labor to install it
03:35 PM roycroft: my bank is not happy
03:35 PM {HD}: not the end of the world but does suck. does insurance cover things like blown engine?
03:35 PM roycroft: but they're going to see if they can refinance my loan and get me some cash for the repair
03:35 PM roycroft: no, insurance does not cover such things
03:35 PM roycroft: my loan is at 2.49%
03:36 PM {HD}: wth is the point of insurance then?
03:36 PM roycroft: if i can get a chunk of the money for the repair at that rate i'd like that
03:36 PM roycroft: if i crash my car into a tree
03:36 PM roycroft: if someone crashes into my car
03:36 PM roycroft: if someone steals my car
03:36 PM roycroft: that's what insurance is for
03:36 PM roycroft: if it blows up, that would be a warranty thing
03:37 PM roycroft: and i was offered an extended warranty on the car, but i declined, because it was pretty expensive
03:37 PM roycroft: in retrospect it would have saved me a lot of money though
03:37 PM roycroft: oh well
03:38 PM roycroft: life happens, and i'll deal with it
03:38 PM roycroft: i want to see my engine when it's pulled, though
03:38 PM roycroft: i'm sure the hole is impressive
03:39 PM roycroft: hopefully my mechanic won't charge extra for show and tell :)
03:53 PM Nick-Shop: Is there a doc to describe how to test for an index signal using halmeter in axis?
03:54 PM JT-Shop: http://gnipsel.com/linuxcnc/tuning/encoder.html
03:57 PM Nick-Shop: Thans - having trouble with the index for homing and my scope says there's and index signal coming out from the encoder.
03:57 PM Nick-Shop: Thanks
04:06 PM XXCoder: roycroft: probably cheaoper to just get replacement engine. few k. unless you can do rebuild yourself
04:13 PM JT-Shop: roycroft: what kind and size engine?
04:27 PM roycroft: it's a 2003 toyota prius
04:27 PM roycroft: 1.5L
04:34 PM JT-Shop: might be able to find one from a wrecked prius
04:35 PM roycroft: it's another gamble if we do that
04:36 PM roycroft: i think i can get a used engine with warranty for <$1k
04:36 PM roycroft: and my mechanic says his book tells hime 20 hours for the engine swap
04:36 PM roycroft: so that's $1700 for labor
04:36 PM XXCoder: cant do swap yourself or just no time to?
04:36 PM roycroft: no time and no desire
04:37 PM roycroft: and no indoor shop for wrenching on cars
04:37 PM roycroft: well, i could probably make room but it would take me hours to get the shop ready to bring a car in
04:37 PM XXCoder: holy quad of work: desire, time, skill and shop
04:37 PM roycroft: so it's down to lathe or car right now
04:37 PM roycroft: and car wins
04:37 PM roycroft: but i've been wanting to sell that vw bus for a long time, and now i'm motivated to get it ready to sell
04:38 PM XXCoder: time to work laters
05:10 PM gregcnc: https://youtu.be/haHM63o1JZs?t=1m24s roycroft did it look like this?
05:36 PM andypugh: JT-Shop: Not something you see many girls doing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CYPfVb9Nt4Y
05:37 PM JT-Shop: they must have the rear brake on the bars?
05:37 PM Loetmichel: question: with my second 3dprinter arriving tomorrow (hopefully): can anyone give me advice on a free or cheap 3d cad that a guy can use that is used to corel Draw to do 2d (and 2.5D) "cad"?
05:38 PM andypugh: Loetmichel: Fusion360
05:39 PM Loetmichel: i have bought a 3c cad a while ago named "turbocad 17" and never got around working in it because its SO different from the 2d approach i do today...
05:39 PM JT-Shop: they have a group of bikers in St Louis that ride like that
05:39 PM Loetmichel: so ist that useable to a "2d guy" or do i have to learn a completely new workflow?
05:40 PM andypugh: Probably a new workflow. And I might not be using the Fusion360 workflow. I mainly use inventor. You _can_ use Fusion the same way, but I am not sure it is what they expect.
05:43 PM Deejay: gn8
05:45 PM andypugh: Loetmichel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1Mg034jtUg&list=PLAQfn-QKbiAmSnHDXF_Pfa8EeIvXWJbqR
05:48 PM Loetmichel: thanks, even in german.
05:52 PM enleth: Loetmichel: just give f360 a little time, it's different from the old autocad-ish stuff but very easy
05:54 PM enleth: a small hint, though: note that you can create many components in a single workspace and learn to explicitly mark the one you're editing as "active" to ensure proper ownership of sketches, bodies etc. by logical components
05:57 PM enleth: Loetmichel: if you get the hang of that early, the rest is a piece of cake
05:58 PM Loetmichel: thx
05:58 PM enleth: fixing ownership/structure of your data and objects later on can be tedious and sometimes near impossible
06:00 PM andypugh: To draw a piece of cake, I would draw an arc in centre + 2 points format, draw two lines to the centre, dimension the angle and radius (optional) then extrude the bottom layer, extrude the filling, and extrude the top. By doing it in three extrusions you can make the filling a different colour
06:01 PM enleth: andypugh: bonus points for actually 3D printing it
06:01 PM roycroft: my way is more fun
06:01 PM roycroft: bake a nice cake
06:01 PM roycroft: plate it up and frost it and stuff
06:01 PM roycroft: cut a slice out of it
06:01 PM roycroft: place on a piece of paper
06:01 PM roycroft: trace around it
06:01 PM andypugh: Then 3D-scan it?
06:02 PM roycroft: or maybe i could just ask mary berry to send me a piece of cake
06:07 PM roycroft: i do enjoy baking though
06:07 PM roycroft: especially the eating part after
06:09 PM JT-Shop: I always bake for the wife, she can't follow instructions lol
06:11 PM roycroft: you can get away with a dash of this and a glop of that when cooking
06:11 PM roycroft: but not when baking
06:12 PM JT-Shop: aye
06:13 PM os1r1s: JT-Shop Are you Big JT on the forums?
06:13 PM JT-Shop: the most challenging thing is French bread
06:14 PM JT-Shop: aye, but I'm no longer BIG lol
06:14 PM JT-Shop: 250 to 175 in a year
06:14 PM os1r1s: haha
06:14 PM roycroft: you need to steam the bread in the oven to get the right crust for french bread
06:15 PM roycroft: commercial baking ovens have steam injectors
06:15 PM JT-Shop: yea, it's a bit of a challenge
06:15 PM os1r1s: So you had a post about setting TLO using a presetter. Said you use G55, and set them against a reference tool. Is that trie?
06:15 PM roycroft: but you can pour some boiling water into a lasagne pan on a rack underneath the bread
06:15 PM os1r1s: correct?
06:15 PM roycroft: and
06:15 PM roycroft: time is your friend when baking bread
06:16 PM roycroft: let it prove for 2-3 hours
06:16 PM roycroft: don't rush it
06:16 PM andypugh: I last baked bread 3000 miles from land…
06:16 PM JT-Shop: I don't use a presetter and G10 L11 IIRC is the one that uses G59.4
06:16 PM andypugh: (Durng the yacht race we made fresh bread every day)
06:16 PM JT-Shop: on the sail boat?
06:17 PM roycroft: on your way to the falklands?
06:17 PM JT-Shop: cool
06:17 PM roycroft: baking on a sailboat would be fun
06:17 PM os1r1s: JT-Shop I have a presetter and I want to mount it in a static location on the table, then just hit the presetter for setting things like drillbit offsets.
06:18 PM os1r1s: JT-Shop Was looking at your post on this thread ... https://forum.linuxcnc.org/38-general-linuxcnc-questions/15566-tool-length-measurement
06:18 PM JT-Shop: presetter = some kind of touch probe thing?
06:19 PM os1r1s: JT-Shop Yes, basically
06:19 PM os1r1s: An inverse probe that you touch down on
06:19 PM JT-Shop: yea that is a pretty old thread
06:19 PM os1r1s: But same principle
06:19 PM JT-Shop: but I use the same method on the BP
06:19 PM os1r1s: andypugh Want to see a cool 3d scan/print, check this out ... https://www.dropbox.com/s/08x7y6sivp10sul/F2FGArmy.jpg?dl=0
06:20 PM os1r1s: The G10 L11 stuff is tripping me up a bit ...
06:20 PM andypugh: scans of real people?
06:20 PM os1r1s: andypugh Scanned all of the kids in the 3 first grade classes and printed out figurines for them
06:21 PM os1r1s: So they got 4" action figures of themselves
06:22 PM andypugh: Those would be kind of cool to have when they are grown-up and old, to remind themselves what they once looked like.
06:22 PM andypugh: Like seeing old photos, but slightly better.
06:22 PM os1r1s: I have ones of my older son for the past 3 years at the appropriate scale
06:23 PM os1r1s: They are pretty funny to see
06:23 PM andypugh: I still have no 3D printer.
06:24 PM andypugh: A continual source of astonishment to me.
06:24 PM os1r1s: andypugh I have too many. But I seem to be collectiing mills too.
06:24 PM andypugh: I think it is because I can’t bring myself to buy a ready-made one, and don’t have the time to design and build one.
06:25 PM andypugh: But, anyway, time i was asleep.
06:25 PM os1r1s: andypugh This is the one I'm building right now ... https://www.dropbox.com/s/klkevqkjoxpjozj/Eust1axis.jpg?dl=0
06:25 PM roycroft: i really don't like the output of any of the low end 3d printers
06:25 PM roycroft: and i can't afford a good one
06:26 PM os1r1s: roycroft If you are near Chicago, MRRF is this weekend.
06:26 PM roycroft: i am nowhere near chicago
06:26 PM os1r1s: Thats right, you are near WA
06:26 PM roycroft: i grew up there, but i have not been there in a good 20 years
06:26 PM roycroft: wait
06:27 PM andypugh: roycroft: Sort-of Ultimaker style?
06:27 PM roycroft: i had a stop-over at midway in august of 2001
06:27 PM roycroft: but i never deplaned
06:27 PM roycroft: so i don't think that counts
06:27 PM os1r1s: andypugh Kind of. But I'm replacing all the plastic parts with metal. It uses ballscrews, linear rails, etc
06:27 PM os1r1s: andypugh And its 320x320 build area
06:28 PM andypugh: I was just meaning the crossed-slides. (which I think is the cleverest part of the ultimaker)
06:29 PM os1r1s: andypugh Yep, very similar
06:30 PM os1r1s: andypugh I was trying to get it ready for MRRF, but machining issue have hindered my progress.
06:30 PM os1r1s: andypugh Are you in the UK?
06:30 PM andypugh: Aye.
06:31 PM roycroft: i tend to stay in my timezone
06:31 PM roycroft: i like traveling north and south
06:31 PM roycroft: but not east
06:31 PM roycroft: and west is very wet
06:33 PM andypugh: If you go east far enough you can get to all the same places.
06:36 PM os1r1s: Would ya'll vote for flood coolant or a fogbuster on a g0704 class machine?
06:38 PM JT-Shop: air maybe
06:38 PM JT-Shop: would be a mess otherwise
06:44 PM os1r1s: JT-Shop Flood is too much of a mess?
06:46 PM JT-Shop: if you don't have full covers yea
06:46 PM JT-Shop: I just machine dry on my BP knee mill and use air if I'm slotting
06:47 PM os1r1s: JT-Shop I'm been running dry, but have a fogbuster on my smaller mill upstairs and was debbating on hooking it up to this one
06:48 PM JT-Shop: I've never used one so no opinion on it
06:49 PM roycroft: i would have concerns about coolant mist in the air, and breathing it
06:49 PM roycroft: i think i would run dry or with flood coolant
06:49 PM roycroft: from a health and safety point of view
06:51 PM sync_: well, the fogbuster doesn't produce aerosols that a sprayer would
06:51 PM * JT-Shop signs off
06:58 PM {HD}: I like the sound of the fogbuster.
06:58 PM {HD}: Does it spray enought air to clear chips out of pockets?
07:02 PM os1r1s: It does
07:02 PM os1r1s: {HD} It works really well on my Shertaig
07:03 PM evilren: whats a shertaig
07:03 PM evilren: you ruined a taig with sherline parts!?
07:03 PM evilren: unless you mean the rotary table, thats kinda cool
07:04 PM os1r1s: evilren I put a sherline motor on my taig mill
07:07 PM evilren: can you control speed from code?
07:07 PM evilren: or its just some big knob on an SCR or something
07:08 PM evilren: i think all my stopped cycles have been because the motor stalled because cutting to deep at too high an rpm step
07:08 PM evilren: ha, like the shit wont even spool up 10k cold before it thermals
07:09 PM os1r1s: evilren Yes. I can control it all via gcode
07:10 PM os1r1s: evilren I've also got a toolchanger spindle on it
07:11 PM evilren: oh, sex
07:12 PM evilren: what kind of collets on the changer?
07:12 PM os1r1s: er11
07:12 PM evilren: i would miss the 3/8 EMs for sure, but year changes in gcode would be pretty neat
07:12 PM evilren: *yeah
07:28 PM os1r1s: evilren https://youtu.be/UOKeW9JOs_A
07:29 PM os1r1s: I am building a tool changer apparatus so it can spin and have the machine pick up tools
07:29 PM evilren: whats torque like before it slips?
07:30 PM os1r1s: Dunno in numbers. But it swings 1/4 end mills as well as the original
07:30 PM os1r1s: brb
07:30 PM evilren: there was the bigger system with the red aluminum flange thing, i read bunch of places that it would slip before the pulley belt would
07:30 PM evilren: thats pretty good
07:32 PM gregcnc: os1r1s which spindle is that?
07:32 PM {HD}: Thats so cute!
07:47 PM os1r1s: gregcnc Sherline spindle
07:47 PM os1r1s: evilren I think that was the HTS one
07:48 PM os1r1s: evilren This one has a little more contact area
07:50 PM gregcnc: when did they start making those?
07:50 PM os1r1s: gregcnc This is aftermarket
07:50 PM gregcnc: so not a sherline
07:51 PM gregcnc: dale walsh?
07:51 PM os1r1s: gregcnc imsrv
07:51 PM gregcnc: yeha ok
07:51 PM os1r1s: gregcnc Too expensive for what it does
07:51 PM os1r1s: But what I was looking for
07:52 PM os1r1s: I originally got it to help with making injection molds
07:53 PM gregcnc: not many small tool change spindles out htere
07:53 PM os1r1s: Right. What size machine do you run?
07:54 PM gregcnc: small Emco PCmill 125 and my frankenmill
07:54 PM os1r1s: Ahh, very cool. I've debated on emco lathes for some time
07:55 PM gregcnc: when I built my spindle i should have just gone all the way and done tool change
07:58 PM gregcnc: seems like a pneumatic drawbar spindle at that price isn't really bad
07:58 PM os1r1s: gregcnc I need to add something to my pm25
07:59 PM gregcnc: the tools changer on the Mill 125 is nice to have. I run parts that use all 10 tools.
08:01 PM os1r1s: It looks similar to the kind on a robodrill
08:02 PM gregcnc: some of the early umbrella type machine were the same.
08:16 PM {HD}: I think I am going to make a microcontroller to turn my spindle coolant pump on when the spindle turns on but to stay on until the temp goes below a threshold value.
08:21 PM Loetmichel: {HD}: i have used the "simple approach"
08:21 PM {HD}: do tell
08:22 PM Loetmichel: my micro fountain pump in the cooling reservoir simply is plugged in the same switched power strip as the CNC mill ;)
08:22 PM Loetmichel: (and the VFD)
08:22 PM Loetmichel: only thing that has unswitched power is the PC
08:22 PM {HD}: Loetmichel: That is too easy.
08:23 PM {HD}: I like to make things as hard as possible
08:23 PM Loetmichel: same as the fans on the Stepper boards
08:23 PM Loetmichel: they start when the machine gets power
08:23 PM Loetmichel: no need to do fancy temerature sensing there ;)
08:24 PM Loetmichel: that reminds me: i think i forget to power off the CNC at work today
08:24 PM {HD}: Loetmichel: Ok, Ill wire it in to the existing switch I use to power the PSUs for my drivers.
08:24 PM Loetmichel: ... so it will idle til tomorrow morning ;)
08:25 PM Loetmichel: ahem... today moring. its already 1:54 in the morning here ;)
08:36 PM {HD}: I am trying to pick a high voltage/electrocution risk/warning sign for my control box.
08:40 PM CaptHindsight: is it very heavy?
08:40 PM {HD}: My control box? I am not sure. i built it in place..
08:41 PM CaptHindsight: my favorite is Danger 1,000,000 Ohms
08:41 PM {HD}: That doesnt sound very dangerous
08:41 PM CaptHindsight: {HD}: from a catalog? Have a link?
08:42 PM {HD}: CaptHindsight: I am just going to print it on adhesive photo paper with my laser printer...so, I am looking on google images.
08:44 PM CaptHindsight: http://d35gqh05wwjv5k.cloudfront.net/media/catalog/product/cache/4/image/85e4522595efc69f496374d01ef2bf13/1426981349/e/l/electrical-warning-labels-danger-high-voltage-with-graphic-l5747-lg.jpg dance themed
08:45 PM CaptHindsight: https://image.shutterstock.com/z/stock-vector-danger-high-voltage-sign-320790095.jpg skull and crossbones
08:45 PM {HD}: looks like a tangled marionette
08:45 PM CaptHindsight: Danger - Tangled Puppets Proceed with caution
08:46 PM Cromaglious_: {HD}, Totally!
08:46 PM {HD}: Totally what?!
08:46 PM Cromaglious_: looks like a tangled marionette
08:46 PM {HD}: ha
08:47 PM Cromaglious_: running first gcode on new cables... and home switches
08:48 PM {HD}: Cromaglious_: What switches did you go with? I need to pick out some for my new machine.
08:48 PM CaptHindsight: that sign came up when searching for: danger + sign + dancing
08:49 PM Cromaglious_: if you don't cut ferrous metal, Induction or hall effect work. of a Normally open micro switch with a capacitor across it
08:50 PM Cromaglious_: s/of a/or a/
08:50 PM Cromaglious_: a cap really cuts down on debounce
08:51 PM {HD}: Cromaglious_: I had some wicked debounce errors on my last machine. What size cap?
08:52 PM Cromaglious_: heh.. I'm using a 470 mf electrolitic 16v... it's what I had handy... a tantium ceramic should work too
08:53 PM CaptHindsight: mechanical switch?
08:53 PM Cromaglious_: yep
08:53 PM {HD}: arnt electrolitics polorized? does that effect it?
08:54 PM Cromaglious_: yep.. but a homing switch, one wire is tied to ground...
08:55 PM CaptHindsight: http://www.eng.utah.edu/~cs5780/debouncing.pdf
08:55 PM CaptHindsight: http://www.labbookpages.co.uk/electronics/debounce.html
08:56 PM {HD}: Ill add those to my 'to read list'
08:56 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.allaboutcircuits.com/technical-articles/switch-bounce-how-to-deal-with-it/
08:57 PM CaptHindsight: http://www.ganssle.com/debouncing-pt2.htm
09:01 PM Cromaglious_: 0.1uF ceramic capacitor so a freaking SMALL cap works
09:04 PM {HD}: I will read those pages and see what I need. I was thinking of using something other than mechanical but, havent figured it out yet.
09:14 PM {HD}: http://img15.deviantart.net/d279/i/2009/083/a/0/warning___quickenings_ahead_by_freeport.jpg
09:17 PM {HD}: Oh no! http://img13.deviantart.net/4340/i/2016/100/b/0/high_voltage_pikachu_by_grumbeerkopp-d9ygcc7.png
09:28 PM cradek: Cromaglious_: https://softsolder.com/2012/07/13/contact-bounce-why-capacitors-dont-fix-it/
09:31 PM Cromaglious_: you need to realize a home switch setup is already going through a resistor, optoisolator. So a cap works just fine.
09:31 PM Cromaglious_: the ESR of the electrolytic cap probably helps
09:48 PM Cromaglious_: still running doesn't look like it's lost any steps
10:13 PM Cromaglious_: it lost steps... GRRRRRr(^*&%^
10:14 PM Cromaglious_: that'll teach me... Oh it's running good... lemme speed it up a bit....
10:15 PM {HD}: How do you know it lost steps? What is causing it?
10:22 PM Cromaglious_: DRo is showing -0.400mm and is 2mm above the surface
10:23 PM {HD}: Dro! I don't have one of those.
10:36 PM oskar1960_ is now known as oskar1960
10:43 PM MacGalempsy: good evening
11:19 PM Wolf_: morning, or whatever it is now
11:56 PM Cromaglious_: for me... been up 9 hours.. so afternoon
11:57 PM Cromaglious_: gmoccapy does a decent DRO in linuxcnc
11:57 PM Wolf_: one in axis if you turn it on iirc
11:58 PM Cromaglious_: talked to an old mate... he's getting me the money for the 3 JMC-motor.com integrated 2nm steppers
11:58 PM Cromaglious_: he owes me about $300-400 for 16MB of memory he got off me... 2.3 decades ago
