[00:08:23] <XXCoder> https://youtu.be/5al4CtLFebU interesting
[00:17:12] <roycroft> for once, a mill around here for a decent price
[00:17:13] <roycroft> http://eugene.craigslist.org/bfs/5939209872.html
[00:17:28] <roycroft> but it's like 6x as big as i can deal with
[00:17:52] <XXCoder> thats horzional mill
[00:17:58] <XXCoder> or posibly both
[00:18:09] <roycroft> both
[00:18:29] <roycroft> it's ginormous
[00:38:24] <XXCoder> short star wars movie. speed increase each time someone shoots laser, but there is TONS lasers right at beginning.
https://youtu.be/wIIoMaidXq0
[01:26:03] <XXCoder> lol guy in reprap saying printer port isnt realtime :P
[01:26:15] <Wolf_> lol
[01:26:25] <XXCoder> reprap
[01:26:27] <Wolf_> do they think usb is?
[01:27:36] <XXCoder> no respond
[01:32:26] <XXCoder> and now they say laptop is same as computer on latency
[01:32:27] <XXCoder> suuure
[01:33:36] <Wolf_> actually
[01:34:13] <Wolf_> depends on the computer, IMO the mini-itx I am running is more like laptop hardware then oldschool pc..
[01:34:24] <XXCoder> someone said that yeah
[01:34:40] <XXCoder> im sure its just "repacked" laptop hardware
[01:39:21] <d42> an old laptop is good enough for the cncs i go out with though :^)
[01:39:37] <XXCoder> my laptop had insane latency lol
[01:39:41] <XXCoder> in order of 500,000
[01:39:52] <XXCoder> when bad latency is hmm 80,000?
[01:40:21] <d42> after applying some of the linuxcnc, i think acpi, hacks it got pretty good
[01:40:21] <Wolf_> mostly due to video chips in them
[01:40:58] <Wolf_> or power management that doesn’t have bios options I bet
[01:41:17] <d42> most likely :^)
[01:41:19] <XXCoder> maybe dunno
[01:41:26] <XXCoder> laptop is ancient anyway
[01:41:37] <XXCoder> bought it in 2003
[02:02:02] <XXCoder> wow
[02:02:04] <XXCoder> http://the-digital-reader.com/2016/12/19/e-ink-now-selling-epaper-screen-units-direct-public/
[02:02:17] <XXCoder> it'd be great if I knew how to use those
[02:27:45] <Deejay> moin
[03:30:30] <IchGucksLive> Good morning from ICY germany -8C
[03:30:43] <XXCoder> hey mr frosty
[03:31:00] <IchGucksLive> cool
[03:31:30] <IchGucksLive> last day of a wonderfull year
[03:31:53] <XXCoder> yep\
[03:32:03] <XXCoder> besides "wonderful"
[03:32:08] <XXCoder> in usa 2016 sucked
[03:32:16] <IchGucksLive> hour to go for the first country to enter the new year
[03:32:46] <XXCoder> think theres -13.5 gmt
[03:32:51] <XXCoder> er -12.5
[03:33:09] <IchGucksLive> XXCoder: looking in todays news the 20th jan will be a party day as girl troop is hirered
[03:33:33] <IchGucksLive> Oceanic s first
[03:34:38] <XXCoder> cool
[03:34:40] <IchGucksLive> https://www.timeanddate.com/time/map/#!cities=264
[03:35:22] <IchGucksLive> this year as of a switch year we will have a +14 hours from gmt
[03:35:43] <XXCoder> interesting
[03:36:17] <IchGucksLive> so this day has in total 26hours to go
[03:36:44] <XXCoder> leap second this year
[03:36:54] <IchGucksLive> first celebrations are in wellington on TV or webcam
[03:37:01] <XXCoder> so 11:59:59 will last 2 seconds
[03:37:30] <IchGucksLive> yes
[03:37:52] <IchGucksLive> less then 2hours to see firerworks in wellington tower lightning
[03:38:59] <IchGucksLive> and US midway is the last to celebrate
[03:39:26] <IchGucksLive> its friday 10Pm
[03:40:21] <IchGucksLive> ok im off till later ;-)
[03:40:38] <XXCoder> later
[05:33:43] <XXCoder> hmmm
[05:33:58] <XXCoder> any good 4 wire cables around 18 20 awg ?
[05:34:02] <XXCoder> on amazon
[05:36:54] <XXCoder> https://www.amazon.com/Riser-Rated-Non-Shielded-Sound-Security/dp/B00KY4TAGM/ 1000 feet way too long
[05:40:07] <XXCoder> https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01C37NDYW/ nice
[06:00:49] <jthornton> morning
[06:01:14] <XXCoder> hey
[06:01:14] <jthornton> log
[06:01:14] <c-log> jthornton: Today's Log
http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:82/~tom-itx/irc/logs/%23linuxcnc/2016-12-31.html
[06:23:12] <IchGucksLive> hi so the first countrys did make it into 2017
[06:23:24] <IchGucksLive> nice firerworks in auckland
[06:23:45] <IchGucksLive> 1hr to go for sidney
[06:24:26] <IchGucksLive> best wishes on 2017 Changing LCNC to Debian
[06:24:55] <SpeedEvil> Will they make it out is the uestion.
[06:26:19] <XXCoder> ohh man from 2017, my future comes in and speaks
[06:26:38] <XXCoder> linuxcnc is changing to debian?
[06:30:05] <IchGucksLive> XXCoder: since a long time i guess
[06:30:26] <XXCoder> ah you upgrading your old copy of linuxcnc?
[06:30:27] <IchGucksLive> and 12.04 ends on 1st april
[06:30:34] <IchGucksLive> 2017
[06:30:49] <IchGucksLive> so you need to do somthing on new developments
[06:31:03] <IchGucksLive> here im in big trouble
[06:31:21] <IchGucksLive> as around 100 education mashines are still on 10.04
[06:31:38] <XXCoder> pretty old allright
[06:31:42] <IchGucksLive> and my broters made the next 150 mashines on 12.04
[06:31:50] <XXCoder> need to update and make new image file
[06:32:03] <XXCoder> theres utilities to make it nearly brain dead simple
[06:32:11] <IchGucksLive> so if itr comes in bad way i nee to change in and around 300+ mashines
[06:32:29] <IchGucksLive> i know
[06:32:53] <IchGucksLive> but my expirence now in 12,04 is cloning is different to a full install
[06:33:10] <IchGucksLive> as latency showes big differences
[06:33:19] <XXCoder> strange
[06:33:21] <IchGucksLive> on the same pc
[06:33:41] <IchGucksLive> if i install it its lower then 20k
[06:34:10] <XXCoder> only ponental issue I know of is that there is device id on all linux installs, and imanging you have to delete that so it regenerates new one
[06:34:10] <IchGucksLive> if i clone the Drive to a equal its more then 60k
[06:34:17] <XXCoder> so many machines all have different ids
[06:34:32] <XXCoder> but I dont know why image would cause latency to be higher.
[06:35:10] <IchGucksLive> doesent matter the education mashines are all on 1200mm/min max
[06:35:21] <IchGucksLive> so even 150.000 is good to go
[06:35:31] <XXCoder> guess so. just quite puzzling
[06:35:41] <XXCoder> and that place have so many machines dnag
[06:35:44] <XXCoder> *dang
[06:35:59] <IchGucksLive> ist on 8 schools for know
[06:36:14] <IchGucksLive> 2017 may ad also 4 more
[06:36:39] <IchGucksLive> bringing craftsman schools to CNC
[06:36:45] <IchGucksLive> late but its o k
[06:36:58] <IchGucksLive> 2 students one mashine
[06:36:58] <XXCoder> nice
[06:37:03] <XXCoder> too bad usa schools suck
[06:38:45] <IchGucksLive> also the mashines are used in Eelktronics/ Housewife/Housekeeping/Design Textil Clothing .... Classes
[06:39:04] <IchGucksLive> so they are running around 5-8hr
[06:39:09] <IchGucksLive> on poweer
[06:39:25] <XXCoder> nice
[06:39:32] <IchGucksLive> price is now down to 170Euros on building cost
[06:39:49] <XXCoder> got any picture of school cnc machine? curious
[06:39:54] <IchGucksLive> its a Reel CHEES
[06:39:56] <XXCoder> because that is pretty chea[
[06:40:29] <IchGucksLive> you cand hit anirging harder then Sicka
[06:41:27] <IchGucksLive> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CYFYUA9ij6Q
[06:41:45] <XXCoder> interesting
[06:42:09] <IchGucksLive> or the old one downgreated to low cost
[06:42:35] <IchGucksLive> the new one make 200x200x80mm
[06:42:46] <IchGucksLive> the old makes 165x165x50
[06:43:14] <XXCoder> really its great for school and education.
[06:43:22] <XXCoder> any 3d printers?
[06:43:32] <IchGucksLive> no
[06:43:49] <IchGucksLive> the lessens are 45 min
[06:44:00] <IchGucksLive> what woudt you print
[06:44:07] <XXCoder> that is true
[06:44:19] <XXCoder> printers take pretty lot time.
[06:44:26] <IchGucksLive> the CAD CAM lessens include 3D
[06:44:50] <IchGucksLive> and most controllers take the STL
[06:45:02] <IchGucksLive> better ones even step or iges
[06:45:20] <IchGucksLive> Rhino got its obj and the 3ds
[06:45:52] <IchGucksLive> we will see 4Colour printers below 1000euros in 2017
[06:46:09] <XXCoder> I usually use slic3r generate gcode and run
[06:46:26] <IchGucksLive> University now got the first methel printer below 5k
[06:46:36] <XXCoder> cheap multi-color exists already, or did you mean mixing colors which is still bit hard
[06:46:42] <XXCoder> metal?
[06:47:23] <IchGucksLive> its a kind of ALmG
[06:47:53] <XXCoder> Al-Mg alloy interesting
[06:48:24] <IchGucksLive> looks like inverted plasma
[06:49:27] <IchGucksLive> but silikan poweder laser print is still the best to get nice stable prints
[06:49:41] <IchGucksLive> as most car manufacturers now do
[06:49:49] <XXCoder> would love to have one but nah
[06:49:49] <IchGucksLive> molding as print
[06:49:57] <XXCoder> I really need to finish my cnc router bleh
[06:50:17] <IchGucksLive> here we are down to 12hr on one
[06:50:26] <IchGucksLive> Full AL
[06:50:36] <IchGucksLive> 40x20mm frame
[06:50:51] <IchGucksLive> just Saw Drill
[06:51:54] <IchGucksLive> the 5Axis on the Y channel is made only out of 2 Different Parts
[06:52:09] <IchGucksLive> 8hr for a 5 Axis to be made
[06:52:29] <XXCoder> not bad
[06:52:30] <IchGucksLive> 16H7 26 Ht 28H7 drills
[06:52:41] <IchGucksLive> H7
[06:52:50] <XXCoder> https://www.amazon.com/DIGITEN-Digital-Tachometer-Proximity-Switch/dp/B00VKAT8A2/ im considering this
[06:52:57] <XXCoder> add feedback to spindle rpm
[06:53:04] <XXCoder> so it can set speed correct speed
[06:54:29] <IchGucksLive> even as one school only got a mill that has Track control
[06:54:47] <IchGucksLive> no rounding no chanfer no dioganal
[06:54:57] <IchGucksLive> cool but it does the job
[06:55:09] <IchGucksLive> that school where most impressed at all
[06:55:24] <IchGucksLive> on all the things that tiny mashine makes
[06:55:54] <IchGucksLive> T-shirt FOAM PCB Figurating
[06:56:05] <IchGucksLive> and ofcause CNC-milling
[06:56:37] <IchGucksLive> ok im off Sydney 12min of firerworks ahad all over the TV stations
[06:56:49] <IchGucksLive> to be continoud
[08:29:51] <Roguish> XXCoder: how do you get the rpm signal out?
[08:30:00] <XXCoder> yeah im wondering too
[08:30:06] <jthornton> morning Roguish
[08:30:08] <XXCoder> problem is it seem to max out at 12k
[08:30:13] <XXCoder> err below 10k
[08:30:23] <XXCoder> while spindle I am considering goes to 12k
[08:30:24] <jthornton> XXCoder: you got a spindle?
[08:30:32] <Roguish> yoh, jthornton. waz up?
[08:31:11] <jthornton> finally got the wood stove setup in the new shop and now I realize I need to swap it out with the wonderwood in the garage
[08:32:04] <Tom_L> heh
[08:32:41] <jthornton> reinstalling the server os
[08:32:45] <XXCoder> fancy
[08:35:20] <jthornton> hmm install stuck on detecting hardware...
[08:36:49] <Roguish> how's all the buildbot compiling going for 'jessie' ????
[08:37:11] <jthornton> dunno
[08:39:32] <jthornton> hmmm it finally took off again
[08:40:22] <jthornton> anyone use ngrok to set up a tunnel to local ip?
[08:41:31] <jthornton> http://www.linuxandubuntu.com/home/how-to-setup-linux-web-server-and-host-website-on-your-own-computer-part-2
[08:47:19] <Tom_L> not me
[08:49:36] <jthornton> do you disable root password login?
[08:49:55] <Tom_L> i didn't
[08:50:17] <Tom_L> i use that to ssh into it from windows
[08:50:24] <jthornton> I've figured out if you copy your public key to the server when you ssh in you don't need a password
[08:51:01] <Tom_L> i noticed that on my last install
[08:51:08] <Tom_L> that must be something fairly new they started
[08:54:07] <Tom_L> ngrok looks like no-ip
[08:54:30] <Tom_L> same idea i think
[08:57:40] <Tom_L> not sure what they install but with no-ip there's nothing to install
[09:04:22] <jthornton> hmmm
[09:07:41] <roycroft> disabling password authentication and using key exchange authentication is more secure than allowing password authentication
[09:10:23] <Tom_L> mine may be using key because when i login from my client it updated the key after asking me
[09:19:49] <roycroft> what it's doing is adding the remote server's public key to your known_hosts file
[09:20:01] <roycroft> that has nothing to do with your personal key
[09:20:09] <roycroft> nor with public key authentication
[09:20:40] <roycroft> it identifies the remote machine so that if an imposter ever intercedes you'll be warned
[09:56:26] <IchGucksLive> hi
[09:58:14] <IchGucksLive> last day nears ending in europ
[09:59:18] <IchGucksLive> HK is next to celebrate
[10:04:15] * roycroft is celebrating new year's eve by starting work at 5am
[10:04:52] <roycroft> fortunately i'm able to work from home
[10:06:04] <IchGucksLive> thats the best job
[10:11:49] <roycroft> yes, i like when i can do that
[10:12:03] <roycroft> i normally go into the office 3 days/week and work from home 2 days/week
[10:12:22] <roycroft> most of the time when i'm doing maintenance, like today, i can do it from home
[10:12:24] <IchGucksLive> even more better
[10:12:41] <IchGucksLive> i got a call from home
[10:13:22] <IchGucksLive> so i will leave for this year and say THANKS to all HERE for Helping to Get Germany Great on CNC mashining
[10:13:46] <IchGucksLive> see you all in 2017 ;-)
[10:33:43] <roycroft> well, it's 1 degree out and dropping
[10:33:59] * roycroft just turned on the shop heater, and thinks it's a good day to bundle up
[10:34:06] <roycroft> it will be below freezing any minute
[11:03:35] <SpeedEvil> Today is a good day to mill ice sculptures!
[11:04:18] <archivist> no here.... nearlt 11 deg C :)
[11:04:23] <archivist> not
[11:04:42] <SpeedEvil> I was referring to roycrofts shop
[11:04:47] <SpeedEvil> here it's warmer too, which is nice
[11:05:13] <SpeedEvil> But sucky in some ways, I have some stuff to do that would be lots easier if the ground was frozen nice and solid for 6"
[11:06:31] <archivist> I can keep 2 rooms comfortable with heatpump in this weather
[11:38:37] <roycroft> i'll get my shop up to about 8-10 degrees today
[11:39:02] <roycroft> so the combination of heater and layers of clothes will make it semi-comfortable
[11:39:43] <roycroft> i'll be doing some control panel wiring, which is not very physical, so i won't generate much heat from doing the work
[11:51:55] <Roguish> roycroft: is that C or F ?
[12:28:49] <roycroft> c
[12:31:40] <Roguish> that's pretty chilly for a shop.....
[12:34:06] <Jymmm> Shiiiiit, mine right now is 40F
[12:34:39] <Jymmm> 46F is my limit
[12:35:32] <Jymmm> was suppose to be 19F Thursady, now 32F instead
[12:35:43] <Jymmm> sorry 24F instead
[12:36:00] <Jymmm> 39F being the high
[12:36:18] <Jymmm> and slushy snow/rain
[12:36:36] <Roguish> i've been working at friend shop this week. mornings start out around 45F. gotta wear at least 4 layers...
[12:37:18] <Roguish> not wet, just cold. yesterday was nice, started out around 55F at 10am
[12:37:29] <Jymmm> 46F I can do with just a flannel shirt, 45 or below, I need me some heat!
[12:37:29] <Roguish> down right balmy
[12:38:12] <Roguish> I layer up. haven't got the lined pants yet, but they are temping.
[12:38:22] <Jymmm> Speaking of which, I need to print out these templates to attempt to cut/weld up a flange for the flue pipe
[12:40:56] <roycroft> i have flannel lined jeans
[12:41:02] <roycroft> essential for working in the shop in the winter
[12:42:26] <Roguish> now that's what i'm talking about. sweet.
[12:42:55] <Jymmm> I can wear just jeans, it's when my hands start burning due to the cold that gets rough.
[12:44:26] <Loetmichel_> Jymmm: some fatty hand ointment helps with that
[12:44:41] <roycroft> yes, but keeping the core warmer helps the extremities
[12:44:54] <roycroft> so my strategy is to dress as warmly as possible
[12:44:57] <roycroft> and wear a warm hat
[12:45:08] <roycroft> and then my ungloved hands can better tolerate the cold
[12:45:18] <Loetmichel_> to 1) counteract the dryness and 2) hepls the hands staying warm because less evaporation of sweat or something
[12:45:23] <roycroft> drinking hot beverages and going inside occasionally also helps
[12:45:53] * roycroft thinks it's about time to head out to the shop, speaking of such things
[12:46:27] <Loetmichel_> roycroft: i once had a saeco in the shop
[12:46:29] <Jymmm> Loetmichel_: I prefer heat instead
[12:46:47] <Loetmichel_> sad affair when the water tank ruptures because frozen solid
[12:47:04] <Loetmichel_> ... so much for hot beverages ;)
[12:47:33] <Jymmm> Loetmichel_: hot water tank?
[12:54:05] <roycroft> it doesn't freeze in my shop
[12:54:23] <roycroft> it almost did a couple years ago, but i kept the heater on 24/7 during that cold spell
[12:54:37] <roycroft> it gets down to 1 degree in my shop on a regular basis in the winter
[12:54:50] <roycroft> this is the main shop, which is an attached garage
[12:54:56] <roycroft> my welding shop freezes all the time
[12:55:02] <CaptHindsight> if I get the shop above 60F I'm sweating like a pig
[12:55:10] <roycroft> but i keep no liquids out there that would freeze
[12:55:36] <andypugh> I leke New-Year’s Eve. You can make as much noise as you want in the workshop until after midnight.
[12:55:46] <roycroft> i try to avoid welding and grinding in the winter
[12:55:49] <Loetmichel_> Jymmm: "saeco" is a company that makes full automatic coffe makers
[12:55:54] <roycroft> although welding warms the place up
[12:55:54] <CaptHindsight> 50'sF is t-shirts, 40's a flannel
[12:56:09] <Loetmichel_> this one:
http://www.cyrom.org/palbum/main.php?g2_itemId=7193&g2_imageViewsIndex=1
[12:56:34] <Loetmichel_> they have a water tank in the back to brew the coffee and a boilder insde
[12:56:38] <Loetmichel_> boiler
[12:57:11] <Loetmichel_> and a 15 bar pump to press the cold water thru the boiler and then thru the coffee powerder they milled earlier
[12:57:39] <CaptHindsight> -25F the shop probably lost the roof, no work today
[12:58:19] <Loetmichel_> andypugh: ESPECIALLY after midnight ;)
[13:00:51] <Jymmm> Loetmichel_: Ah, bummer
[13:01:54] <Loetmichel_> Jymmm: and the tank is made of acrylic
[13:02:07] <Loetmichel_> so it doesent respond well to be frozen solid
[13:02:21] <Loetmichel_> it shattered in a 1000 pieces
[13:02:26] <Jymmm> Loetmichel_: WTH?! Well, if it's not on an edge, it can be repaired with weldon
[13:02:46] <Loetmichel_> 1000 parts puzzle? no thanks ;)
[13:02:54] <Loetmichel_> i just ordered a new tank
[13:03:04] <Loetmichel_> but had to wait a few days for it to arrive
[13:03:09] <Jymmm> Loetmichel_: Did you order the STAINLESS STEEL one?
[13:03:18] <CaptHindsight> Jymmm: likes jigsaw puzzles
[13:03:19] <Loetmichel_> there is none for this model
[13:03:41] <Jymmm> Loetmichel_: toss in all in the trash
[13:03:43] <andypugh> Loetmichel_: Surely you have stainless steel, and a welder?
[13:04:04] <Loetmichel_> i just urged the friends with whom i rented that shop to toss out a bit more in propane next winter ;)
[13:04:34] <Jymmm> or to store EMPTY?
[13:05:43] <Loetmichel_> it was bad to work there in the winter anyway
[13:06:00] <Loetmichel_> the machines didnt like to cool down to -10°c each night
[13:06:45] <Loetmichel_> that was a few tons of cast iron there, including an NC mill with 1200*800*1600mm travel
[13:07:15] <Loetmichel_> and a 4 ton manual lathe with about 1800mm between centers
[13:07:30] <Loetmichel_> those are not THAT precise when heated unevenly...
[13:07:58] <andypugh> I have considered bolting a 100W resistor to my machine frames.
[13:09:01] <Loetmichel_> so we invested in some big (man high) propane bottles... the central heating in that garage/workshop was already converted to propane from city gas, so no effort there
[13:09:14] <Loetmichel_> we used it all day, just shut it down for the night
[13:09:57] <Loetmichel_> heating a building which can store some machinery AND 2 tatra 813 trucks and still have room for a half a dozen cars isnt cheap tho.
[13:11:19] <Loetmichel_> especially with that big 3,5*4m steel door in front
[13:11:39] <Loetmichel_> and down to -18°c outside in the winter ;)
[13:18:49] <zeeshan> hi
[13:20:06] <CaptHindsight> zeeshan: it's tell us how cold your shop is today day
[13:20:13] <zeeshan> :P
[13:20:27] <zeeshan> its nice and warm
[13:20:43] <CaptHindsight> moving shops today
[13:20:51] <zeeshan> your home shop?
[13:21:01] <CaptHindsight> yeah
[13:21:12] <zeeshan> decent day to be doing it :D
[13:21:31] <CaptHindsight> out by midnight
[13:21:47] <CaptHindsight> or I guess I turn into a pumpkin
[13:29:20] <Jymmm> CaptHindsight: bring a broom
[13:30:39] <Jymmm> CaptHindsight: So you dont get a $250 cleaning fee
[13:43:42] <JT-Shop> http://gnipsel.com/images/equipment-shed/chinlee-logwood.jpg
[13:56:16] <Nick-Shop> Is that small stove all you need for your new shop?
[14:03:40] <Jymmm> JT-Shop: O_o
[14:06:26] <Nick-Shop> I'd have ice sickles hanging off the machines
[14:06:40] <Jymmm> JT-Shop: Please tell me your on your way to the hardware store to get soem concrete cinderblocks?
[14:06:53] <Jymmm> Nick-Shop: pics or it never happened!
[14:09:01] <Jymmm> JT-Shop: BTW... This IS certified for flame resistance, but you still have to deal with "heat shield" practices when installing...
http://www.homedepot.com/p/James-Hardie-HardieBacker-3-ft-x-5-ft-x-1-4-in-Cement-Backerboard-220022/100183556
[14:11:34] <Nick-Shop> I'll se what i can do
[14:12:03] <Jymmm> heh, fair enough =)
[14:12:28] <andypugh> Nick-Shop: G95?
[14:12:43] <roycroft> what do folks here use for engraving software that works with linuxcnc?
[14:12:55] <roycroft> andypugh: did you get the usb stick booted?
[14:13:15] <andypugh> roycroft: I noticed that f-engrave is included in synaptic along with LinuxCNC
[14:13:15] * roycroft is looking at inkscape/hersheyfont right now
[14:13:31] <andypugh> And I ened up buying a USB CD drive
[14:13:38] <roycroft> those come in handy anyway
[14:13:41] <roycroft> so probably a good move
[14:14:15] <andypugh> Yes, I can then have a bunch of different LinuxCNC installers for various uses and for problem-recovery
[14:14:38] <Jymmm> andypugh: do you do/go thru a lot of ISO's ?
[14:14:59] <andypugh> Only when things go wrong. But they go wrong a lot.
[14:15:14] <roycroft> and since the objective is to make chips not figure out the nuances of a computer bios, the most expedient means of acomplishing that
[14:15:41] <andypugh> It was only £22. The last stack of DVD-R discs in the shop cost more.
[14:16:17] <andypugh> (I didn’t need 50, but I bought 50)
[14:16:48] <andypugh> Right, back to making expensive brass into worthless swarf.
[14:16:50] <Jymmm> andypugh: See if you can get one of these
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811235059
[14:17:00] <roycroft> 50 will last you indefinitely
[14:17:09] <Jymmm> andypugh: you copy ISO files to it, and it will boot/emulate a blue ray drive
[14:17:20] <Jymmm> or dvd or cd drive
[14:17:50] <Jymmm> andypugh: no having to burn discs or create usb thumbdrives
[14:18:03] <Jymmm> andypugh: yu can switch between ISO's too
[14:18:37] <roycroft> i have some external 2.5" drive holders
[14:18:43] <roycroft> not with the emulator
[14:19:04] <Jymmm> It's aa VERY unique product, not JUST a usb case
[14:19:05] <roycroft> but i find them useful for us upgrades - i install the os on the external drive, boot that, and see if my apps are compatible with the new os
[14:19:28] <Jymmm> There is no installing, it emulates an optical drive to the comuter
[14:19:39] <roycroft> right
[14:19:49] <roycroft> i've no immediate use for that
[14:19:52] <roycroft> but i've bookmarked it
[14:20:35] <roycroft> one could also install a 2.5" ssd in that, install an os on it on one machine
[14:20:41] <roycroft> remove the ssd, and install it in another machine
[14:21:08] <Jymmm> you can do that with any enclosure
[14:21:23] <roycroft> yes
[14:21:34] <roycroft> i'm not claiming that's unique to that device
[14:21:40] <roycroft> just pointing out another useful function
[14:22:27] <Jymmm> I just got tired of burning iso's or fucking around creating thumbdrives. Now I just copy the ISO over and boot
[14:23:34] <roycroft> f-engrave appears to only support tt fonts
[14:23:38] <roycroft> most of my fonts are postscript
[14:26:17] <roycroft> i suppose the question is: do i have enough of a variety of tt fonts to be ok with engraving with just them?
[14:26:23] <roycroft> and i don't know the answer offhand
[15:01:15] <Jymmm> roycroft: I'd suggest getting TTF/OTF fonts
http://dafont.com/ has loads of good fonts
[15:02:27] <Jymmm> chunky fonts are best for V-Groove carving/engraving
[15:06:59] <Jymmm> pcw_home: HNY
[15:07:22] <roycroft> i can convert ps to ttf
[15:07:33] <roycroft> but i have literally thousands of fonts of each variety
[15:07:49] <roycroft> and i probably only need 20 or so for any engraving work i might do
[15:08:08] <roycroft> the inkscape/hershey font stuff looks like it does a good job
[15:08:29] <roycroft> it can outline the letter then do fill strokes if one wants to do it that way
[15:08:46] <roycroft> with a drag engraver tool
[15:09:11] <roycroft> but f-engrave might work well too
[15:09:18] <roycroft> i'll probably install both and evaluate them
[15:13:14] <Nick-Shop> <andypugh> Not yet - got sidetracked setting up the Okuma-Known as making a living - will be back to the hardinge as soon as I can
[15:48:38] <Nick-Shop> <Jymmm> Here's the shop pics

[16:08:38] <MacGalempsy> Hello guys. everyone gearing up for a festive evening?
[16:08:51] <SpeedEvil> No.
[16:09:02] <SpeedEvil> I am having a fun evening dehydrating berries.
[16:09:19] <MacGalempsy> is that not festive?
[16:09:40] <SpeedEvil> Not traditionally anyway
[16:10:03] <MacGalempsy> we went out for UFC last night, so tonight should be a little less eventful
[16:20:27] <SpeedEvil> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMhbRPqwfa0 - undoing the end of a hyraulic cylinder.
[16:24:52] <Jymmm> Nick-Shop Umm, where are these icesicles that you spoke of hanging from all your machines?
[16:38:12] <Deejay> gn8
[16:38:30] <MacGalempsy> n8 dj
[16:53:30] <Nick-Shop> I have a slightly bigger furnace than JT - looks like
[17:29:45] <Nick-Shop> Everyone have a Happy New Year and stay safe Night
[18:16:43] <BeachBumPete> Happy New Year Folks!! Hope it is going to be a good one for everybody
[18:17:08] <roycroft> happy new year to you too!
[18:17:13] <roycroft> it will definitely be a year!
[18:17:38] <BeachBumPete> a good year
[18:17:58] <roycroft> that's usually dependent on how the individual makes the year
[18:18:01] <roycroft> i intend to have a good one
[18:18:10] <BeachBumPete> like I said ;)
[18:32:58] <andypugh> Just ticked into 2017 here, one second late.
[18:35:26] <DaViruz> compared to here you are an hour late!
[18:36:19] <andypugh> GMT. We _own_ the Real Time :-)
[18:36:25] <DaViruz> i know :(
[18:37:12] <XXCoder> BeachBumPete: or less killey than 2016 in least
[18:38:34] <andypugh> When I was a student we took our 1916 fire engine (which has a lot of brass) to Greenwich to look at the museums etc. We noticed that the Meridian which is laid into the road and paths was ver tarnished. As we had lots of brass polish, we polished it. We were all wearing 1916 vintage fire brigade uniforms. I think the tourists thought that we were official Meridian Polishers :-)
[18:39:00] <BeachBumPete> LOL
[18:39:19] <BeachBumPete> well hopefully I can maybe get my toolchanger working in 2017 LOL
[18:40:16] <andypugh> I plan on making my lathe home to position.txt + resolver absolute position, somehow.
[18:40:47] <andypugh> Partly because I just broke the end off my cross-slide gib homing into a pile of swarf.
[18:41:06] <andypugh> (I reckon I can silver-solder it)
[18:41:12] <Tom_L> andypugh how did you fair getting the usb thing to boot?
[18:41:36] <andypugh> I gave up, and bought a USB DVD drive
[18:41:56] <Tom_L> probably not a bad idea to have one of those around anyway
[18:42:20] <Motioncontrol> A good year for all you and your family from Italy
[18:43:11] <MacGalempsy> I had a laptop without a cd drive and ended up just setting up a network drive from another pc
[18:43:24] <andypugh> I am discussing the best types of hammers with my sister via text messages. I suspect that my family is a little odd.
[18:43:44] <MacGalempsy> heh. sledge vs ballpeen?
[18:43:58] <MacGalempsy> california framer?
[18:44:33] <andypugh> Well , magnetic v normal for uphoulstery.
[18:44:56] <Tom_L> magnetic for uphoulstery and roofing
[18:44:56] <MacGalempsy> never seen a magnetic hammer
[18:45:01] <andypugh> I suspect that my sister owns more hammers than me, albeit much smaller ones. She’s a jeweller.
[18:46:59] <DaViruz> Where's my hammer? I ain't havin it.
[18:47:13] <DaViruz> (

[19:01:40] <andypugh> More fun than that: 2016 Colin Furze Compilation:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WsjGOVK2hpk
[19:28:19] <gregcnc> roycroft just opened a beer for breakfast
[20:11:50] <MacGalempsy> gregcnc: you guys hanging ou?
[20:11:54] <MacGalempsy> out?
[20:12:37] <gregcnc> I'm about to get back to the family and watch yesterday's Gold Rush
[20:19:36] <andypugh> I am catching up on the forum :-)
[20:20:27] <XXCoder> print quality?
[20:36:54] <zeeshan> happy new year guys
[20:36:58] <zeeshan> andypugh especially you
[20:37:04] <zeeshan> since you should already be in the new year
[20:37:04] <zeeshan> :D
[20:37:10] <andypugh> I am.
[20:37:19] <zeeshan> how's 2017 looking
[20:37:22] <andypugh> I largely ignored it.
[20:37:35] <zeeshan> its a silly event in my opinion
[20:37:39] <zeeshan> but i try to enjoy it :)
[20:37:47] <andypugh> But 2017 starts well, I am skiiing next weekend.
[20:38:16] <XXCoder> yo zeeshan
[20:38:17] <zeeshan> where do you ski
[20:38:21] <zeeshan> there is snow in england? :D
[20:38:24] <zeeshan> hi XXCoder
[20:38:32] <XXCoder> just did first tests with inductor sensor, very interesting
[20:38:39] <XXCoder> I has ideas to use it for my router topo
[20:38:44] <andypugh> No, I need to travel to ski. Generally France or Austria.
[20:38:57] <zeeshan> ah
[20:39:13] <zeeshan> i've been learning survival skills for my trips this summer/spring/fall
[20:39:21] <zeeshan> and there is a guy mcqbushcraft
[20:39:23] <andypugh> Which are all a long way nearer the equator.
[20:39:23] <zeeshan> whos from england
[20:39:32] <zeeshan> im suprised at how green england is
[20:39:39] <zeeshan> yes but altitude is higher :P
[20:39:53] <andypugh> We get a lot of rain. and the sea keeps it warm.
[20:41:30] <zeeshan> http://c8.alamy.com/comp/E0CAP3/inside-mer-de-glace-glacier-ice-cave-chamonix-france-alps-eu-E0CAP3.jpg
[20:41:33] <zeeshan> ive been there as a kid
[20:41:39] <zeeshan> i believe that was the place in the alps
[20:41:45] <zeeshan> they had tons of ice sculptures
[20:41:50] <zeeshan> i was too young to ski ;[
[20:42:07] <andypugh> Britain and ireland are extremely good places to grow food and trees. We got rich through farming and that gave us the leisure to invent industry.
[20:42:31] <zeeshan> unfortunately you guys l
[20:42:34] <zeeshan> dont have a lot of trees!
[20:42:39] * zeeshan was looking through google
[20:42:56] <andypugh> We cut them all down in the Iron Age
[20:43:00] <XXCoder> zeeshan: move to washington state
[20:43:05] <zeeshan> why
[20:43:06] <XXCoder> more trees than you can see in lifetime
[20:43:09] <zeeshan> i live in the best place in the world
[20:43:10] <zeeshan> :)
[20:43:43] <zeeshan> well there are trees at kielder forest park
[20:43:56] <andypugh> But, if you look up close, we have a lot of trees inside the cities, because if you turn your back for a year or so, a tree happens.
[20:44:28] <XXCoder> ohhh
[20:44:42] <XXCoder> sounds like tree-related horror tv premise ;)
[20:44:51] <XXCoder> look out tree behind you!
[20:45:47] <andypugh> Have you seen/read Day of the Triffids?
[20:46:09] <XXCoder> movie afoption of
[20:46:14] <XXCoder> *adoption
[20:46:44] <zeeshan> nope
[20:46:56] <XXCoder> man been years since I last seen that movie.
[20:47:05] <XXCoder> might be actually couple decade
[21:09:10] <andypugh> Yay! caught up with the forum (I hate forums). I can sleep with a clear conscience.
[21:13:50] <XXCoder> lol\
[21:16:02] <pfred1> well my machine is running tip top again
[21:16:44] <pfred1> apparently time trialing the new drives really put a beat down on the X axis
