05:20 PM tcurdt: a question came up on the user channel that we couldn't answer: why is there a MIN/MAX_LIMIT on both the joints AND the axis? why aren't they just on the joints? or would the joints values fall back to the axis values?
06:41 PM KimK: tcurdt: My first guess would be that they are not the same thing, apples and oranges. Maybe they were more like the same thing before the axis/joints separation. Now joints could be linear or angles, axis XYZ___UVW are always linear, axis ___ABC___ always rotary (angles). Does that help?
06:43 PM KimK: This is assuming you're doing things the "official" way, nothing stops you from doing whatever you can make work if you need an "extra" axis somewhere, i.e.: extruder screw for a 3D printer, etc.
06:47 PM tcurdt: KimK it's clear that they are not the same thing but maybe the definition of axis is would help ... if it's just grouping of joints I can imagine there to be an overall limit that could certainly be different from individual joints
06:49 PM KimK: Yes, that's the idea, as in a robot arm where every joint is rotary. But we want to have gcode programmability in linear XYZ, etc.
06:50 PM tcurdt: alright - makes sense then :) thx!
06:50 PM KimK: Sure!
06:52 PM KimK: tcurdt: If the guy asking the original question has a three-axis mill, he probably won't like this answer, heh.
06:53 PM tcurdt: KimK I was that guy asking :-D
06:53 PM KimK: Ha, OK, it will be easy for you to explain it to him then!
06:55 PM tcurdt: hehehe
06:57 PM KimK: Errands, back after while.
