02:30 PM JT-Shop: pcw---home, hows the 7i96 project coming along?
02:43 PM Lcvette[m]: JT-Shop: what project?
02:45 PM JT-Shop: replacing the spartan 6 fpga with a different one
02:59 PM Lcvette[m]: cool
02:59 PM Lcvette[m]: issue with the spartan or just more of something else in the new one?
03:31 PM JT-Shop: spartan 6 fpga is unobtainium
03:56 PM CaptHindsight[m]: looks like the AMD deal to acquire Xilinx has happened
03:58 PM CaptHindsight[m]: won't help with availability
08:33 PM pcw---home: Should be getting bare proto cards next week so will send the kit out to make 10 and see what Ive got...
08:34 PM pcw---home: SP6 is 70 weeks or never SP7 or Artix is _just_ 52 weeks or so
08:34 PM roycroft: those lead times are insane
08:35 PM roycroft: commerce is fundamentally broken, globally
08:35 PM pcw---home: Ethernet chips are similar
08:35 PM Lcvette[m]: what is the bottleneck n them?
08:35 PM roycroft: and it's not all because of covid-19
08:35 PM roycroft: that just exacerbated the problem
08:35 PM roycroft: i'm glad i make my parts out of wood
08:36 PM roycroft: worst case, i can grab a chain saw and source my own raw materials
08:36 PM pcw---home: Covid19, greater demand, fragile supply chain, high tech 7 nm etc supplanting 45,28 nm fabs for general parts
08:38 PM roycroft: in part it's because of jit manufacturing, in large part because of the moronic tariffs our former president imposed, and that our current president has not revoked, in part because of greater demand, and then covid-19 screwed things up even worse
08:38 PM pcw---home: even weather (Texas freeze shut down a couple ~45 nm fabs for weeks)
08:38 PM roycroft: yeah, but that's not the weather's fault
08:38 PM roycroft: it's texas' fault :)
08:38 PM pcw---home: well yes
08:39 PM roycroft: weather happens
08:39 PM roycroft: be prepared
08:40 PM Lcvette[m]: thats nuts
08:40 PM pcw---home: State with a friendly business climate (just expect to lose a bit when the ammonium nitrate plant next to the school blows up)
08:40 PM Lcvette[m]: PCW time to start mfing chips!
08:40 PM Lcvette[m]: 😀
08:41 PM pcw---home: yep more sources would help a lot (though this will take a few years)
08:58 PM roycroft: hynix built a huge chip manufacturing plant here in eugene in the early 2000s
08:58 PM roycroft: they spent hundreds of millions of dollars on the plant
08:58 PM roycroft: and got tens of millions of dollars in tax concessions from the city and state
08:59 PM roycroft: they hired 3000 workers, making it one of the largest employers in the county
08:59 PM roycroft: they operated for about 5 years before they closed it down
09:00 PM roycroft: in fairness, it was the 2008 recession that finally did them in
09:00 PM roycroft: but in retrospect, i'm not sure they ever intended to make a long-term go at it
09:02 PM pcw---home: Seems like they have to start from scratch when there's is a major equipment upgrade
09:03 PM roycroft: sure, but that's kind of standard in industry
09:03 PM roycroft: the auto industry being a classic example - they do weeks long shutdowns for retooling on a regular basis
09:04 PM pcw---home: latest fabs with EUV have pretty insane technology
09:04 PM norias: intel is building a new plant in Ohio
09:05 PM norias: (i hear)
09:05 PM norias: not that something like that is built soon enough to matter much now
09:05 PM norias: but i guess it's nice to see where their thinking is long term
09:05 PM pcw---home: cameras tracking 50K droplest of tin per second and basting them with a precisely aimed laser
09:06 PM pcw---home: blasting
09:07 PM Lcvette[m]: pew pew pew
09:07 PM pcw---home: at 50 KHz
09:08 PM Lcvette[m]: thats nuts
09:08 PM roycroft: nothing can be soon enough
09:08 PM roycroft: but it's good that it's finally happening
09:10 PM pcw---home: Apparently one of the more tricky parts is protecting the main mirror from tin debris
09:12 PM Lcvette[m]: pcw---home: is there any other test i should recommend for that fujitsu pc setup? im not sure what else to tell him to test or check
09:13 PM pcw---home: Did changing the video fix the crashing?
09:14 PM Lcvette[m]: He's working on installing it now
09:14 PM pcw---home: the square top of the histogram is weird
09:15 PM * Lcvette[m] uploaded an image: (248KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/r0/download/matrix.org/JJKlKJzBhLZyAQQGwVbsNnNW/FB_IMG_1645239532462.jpg >
09:15 PM Lcvette[m]: Vertical column is wierd..lol
09:15 PM Lcvette[m]: Never seen anything like it
09:16 PM Lcvette[m]: Was wondering if maybe it was testing a idle core or something
09:19 PM pcw---home: Maybe it is just very good, as long as its stable and you don't get real time errors on the servo thread, that all that's needed
