11:27 AM skunkworks: wow - I cannot get buster to see any wireless networks
11:32 AM skunkworks: Google is failing me
11:32 AM skunkworks: 2 differnt usb wifi dongles. - one that works with stretch
11:32 AM skunkworks: (linuxcnc livecd)
11:42 AM skunkworks: hmm - booting my laptop - it sees the installed wifi and wireless networks
11:43 AM skunkworks: huh. booting an i5 - hp 8300 - it sees the usb wireless
11:43 AM skunkworks: so - something odd with this motherboard
11:45 AM skunkworks: hmm - but the livecd install doesn't see the wireless
11:48 AM skunkworks: well - that is odd. The installer doesn't see the wifi or when the os is installed. But The live boot - running off the usb see's the wifi and it works
12:02 PM jepler: Probably it depends on the non-free firmware package, and the installer isn't installing it
12:03 PM jepler: that sort of thing is a pain to get right because depending which flavor of installer it is, you have to get it right in two places
12:03 PM jepler: I am not familiar with the tech that andy used to build the new 2.8 / buster image and I don't know where the scripts live so I can't comment at a more technical level
12:07 PM jepler: andypugh: want to put the buster image building scripts on github's linuxcnc organization? if you don't have the privileges to do that (create or transfer in a new repo), we should get that set up.
12:07 PM skunkworks: odd. Like I say - booting the live image - the wifi works. Installer and installed image doesn't
12:08 PM skunkworks: it seems to have all the non-free firmware stuff installed
12:08 PM jepler: in that case my guess is all wrong
12:08 PM skunkworks: incerting the usb wifi shows it in dmesg with no errors
12:10 PM skunkworks: also - why the heck doesn't tab complete work with sudo commands?
12:28 PM rs[m]2: skunkworks: is linux-modules-extra installed?
12:41 PM skunkworks: rs[m]2: cannot be found
12:42 PM skunkworks: and tab complete doesn't work with apt-get install so it is a pain to atleast try to see what is there
12:54 PM rs[m]2: skunkworks: does the interface show up in "ip a l" and "nmcli" ?
12:56 PM skunkworks: yes it does
12:57 PM rs[m]2: maybe it is a problem with NetworkManager or the gui component of NetworkManager
12:58 PM skunkworks: well - network manger wasn't installed - I just installed it
12:59 PM skunkworks: 3: wlx803f5d104cf5: <NO-CARRIER,BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP> mtu 1500 qdisc mq state DOWN group default qlen 1000
12:59 PM skunkworks: link/ether 80:3f:5d:10:4c:f5 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
01:01 PM rs[m]2: i assumed you are already in some kind of desktop environment
01:02 PM skunkworks: xfce
01:04 PM skunkworks: it says it is down
01:25 PM skunkworks: I think the network panel in the task bar isn't very good
01:26 PM skunkworks: I installed network-manager and then used the nmtui and got the wireless connected
01:28 PM rs[m]2: so it is not a driver issue
01:31 PM skunkworks: trying to get the nm-applet
01:32 PM skunkworks: no - seems to be management
01:54 PM andypugh: jepler: Yes, that seems like a good plan
01:59 PM andypugh: jepler: https://github.com/LinuxCNC/buster-live-build
01:59 PM jepler: :+1:
02:08 PM skunkworks: wow - this motherboard is also sub 10us with rt_preemtp
02:08 PM skunkworks: old phenom 4 core
02:23 PM Tom_L: you have all the luck
02:26 PM skunkworks: heh
02:26 PM skunkworks: needed a video card..
02:27 PM skunkworks: The Nforce 630a or whatever that is onboard if flakey at best.
02:27 PM skunkworks: you open up more than a couple of glxgears and they system locks up
02:29 PM Tom_L: well, no motor yet but i got brake resistors coming tomorrow
02:29 PM Tom_L: i can see the tunnel light
02:30 PM skunkworks: ok - full screen youtube and it is up to 16us... ;)
02:30 PM Tom_L: that little touch screen the other day looked cool
02:30 PM skunkworks: this poor thing.
02:31 PM skunkworks: been meaning to get one..
02:31 PM Tom_L: if i ever actually started using a pi on the mill i would
02:31 PM Tom_L: probably couldn't use axis on it..
02:32 PM Tom_L: i'm so used to it
02:32 PM skunkworks: I played with the raduis on the polygon comp this weekend - it definatly makes it so you can run the spindle faster
02:32 PM Tom_L: nice
02:32 PM Tom_L: did a version of that comp make it into 2.8?
02:33 PM Tom_L: or just experimental
02:33 PM skunkworks: just experimental..
02:34 PM skunkworks: It would require a bunch of fixes.. Currently it assumes that machine is in inches...
02:35 PM skunkworks: and it requires the spindle to go clockwise
03:28 PM skunkworks: with the audio turned off - <10us after about an hour running youtube full screen
03:37 PM skunkworks: http://electronicsam.com/images/greenmachine/Screenshot_2020-09-13_15-35-02.png
03:39 PM Tom_L: showoff !
03:40 PM Tom_L: wonder if AMD does better than Intel
03:40 PM Tom_L: overall
06:13 PM skunkworks: Tom_L: don't know
07:42 PM skunkworks: ok. I see the livecd is peared down. I think there are a few things that should be there.
07:43 PM skunkworks: there isn't any gui editor (don't care what - mousepad was fine)
07:43 PM skunkworks: an easy way to take a screen shot doesn't exist
07:44 PM skunkworks: (I also think the network-manager should be installed instead of whatever the default on the livecd is.
07:47 PM skunkworks: https://github.com/LinuxCNC/buster-live-build/blob/master/config/package-lists/desktop.list
07:48 PM skunkworks: I see wicd there - is that where you would add say mousepad or whatever?
07:49 PM skunkworks: looks like wicd vs network-manager is a big argument. ;)
07:50 PM skunkworks: I only say network manager is that is what was in the previous livecd's and it worked for me. (To get my wireless to work on the install today - I uninstalled wicd and installed network-manager.
07:51 PM skunkworks: I was going to download the generic debian livecd and see if it recognized the wireless card during the install.
10:50 PM skunkworks: I did see something interesting on the green machine. If I am in mdi in axis - and have the jog wheel set to z lets say. I roll the jog wheel and nothing happens because i am in mdi. I switch to jog and there is a clunk. like the machine thinks it has to move - then figures out it shouldn't. The axis doesn't end up in a new location and I have not halscoped it yet. But it seems for a
10:50 PM skunkworks: split second it moves and then moves back
10:51 PM skunkworks: If I don't roll the jog wheel - I don't get the clunk
10:51 PM skunkworks: between the mdi tab and jog tab
10:51 PM Tom_L: any backlash programmed in it?
10:51 PM Tom_L: something to look for...
10:52 PM skunkworks: Hmmm. Yes
10:52 PM skunkworks: although I think x and y did it too - and I had the backlash disabled on those 2 axis
10:53 PM skunkworks: I will get more info this week
