11:05 AM andypugh: Sorry, I went to bed :-)
11:06 AM andypugh: Back at in in an hour or two
11:23 AM jepler: so you do sleep sometimes?
11:54 AM andypugh: Not particularly, but I do go to bed in hope.
05:44 PM andypugh: jepler: Looks like that was the right place to look, —debian-installer live
07:17 PM jepler: so is live-build once again the "official" way of making debian live+install media? and live-wrapper was just a short-lived thing?
07:17 PM andypugh: I don’t know.
07:19 PM jepler: at the time I was investigating there seemed to be some drama going on among the live image makers about which software to continue developing. I hate developer drama
07:20 PM jepler: (except when I have to cause it on account of me being right and everyone else being wrong)
07:20 PM Tom_L: :)
07:22 PM skunkworks: That was jepler -10 years..
07:22 PM skunkworks: ok.. Maybe -5 ;)
07:22 PM andypugh: I don’t know what sent me to live-build rather than live-wrapper
07:32 PM andypugh: I sispect that there might be more tweakability in live-build?
07:33 PM andypugh: jepler: Did the idea of using “Replaces” in the pi deb look useful?
07:35 PM jepler: andypugh: I thought I remembered you ran into that when upgrading from one version of my kernel to another. If so, probably not. But maybe I misremember, in which case it could be relevant
07:35 PM jepler: (I've seen it upgrading from one version to another of my kernel package, which is a package of the same name)
07:36 PM andypugh: I have only seen the problem applying the preempt kernel deb to a fresh raspbian image
07:37 PM andypugh: (Which is why I see it as an obstacle)
07:49 PM jepler: okay, then it probably is relevant
07:49 PM jepler: It's unfortunate that I can't see how to coexist with the official kernel, too
07:49 PM jepler: and probably you can mess it up by asking raspi-config to upgrade your kernel, too
08:01 PM andypugh: The diverts seem very kludgy
08:14 PM jepler: the diverts are in the official kernel packages too; they're required because dpkg was never designed to be able to install files to a FAT filesystem, and uses hardlinks.
08:15 PM jepler: but yeah you have my agreement
08:19 PM jepler: A better design is to have /boot on the root filesystem and a process which updates a FAT partition at /boot/real-boot from /boot or something along those lines. Or at least I don't know what the problem would be with that arrangement
08:20 PM jepler: it's not more disk space consumed, it's not more copying data around, because as far as I can tell both methods need 2 copies of the kernel (old + new) on root filesystem plus one copy on the FAT filesystem
08:20 PM jepler: neither preserves the ability of the system to boot if interrupted at critical moments
08:21 PM jepler: but that doesn't mean there's not something I'm overlooking about it, if only the ability to keep upgrading even the oldest installed images
08:23 PM jepler: (actually you just need two FAT filesystems to get atomic kernel updates; the atomic step is to update the partition table ...)
09:15 PM andypugh: New live-ISO test image uploading now, www.linuxcnc.irg/temp/28test2.iso
09:15 PM andypugh: I would be interested to know if wifi works in live mode and/or during installation.
09:16 PM andypugh: Should be preempt-rt in both live-mode and installed.
09:16 PM andypugh: Goodnight all, give the upload another 5 mins before trying to download.
09:18 PM Tom_L: no wifi to test on here
09:18 PM Tom_L: i'll grab it but test tomorrow
09:19 PM Tom_L: it's org instead of irg though :)
09:29 PM jepler: keeps the bots away
09:29 PM Tom_L: heh
