07:25 AM jepler: this new xhc thing is not going to work on old compilers without extensive work. looking into selectively disabling it instead.
07:41 AM rene_dev_: jepler same problem was with the lathe cycles, why not drop support for old compilers?
07:45 AM jepler: rene_dev_: there is no consensus to do that.
07:45 AM rene_dev_: define old
07:45 AM jepler: nobody gets to unilaterally decide it by committing code that breaks on old systems
07:46 AM jepler: "compilers we have publically stated will be supported for 2.8"
07:46 AM rene_dev_: agree, but at some point some old distros need to be dropped
07:47 AM jepler: without consensus we will not change that
07:47 AM jepler: where does consensus come from ? no idea
07:47 AM jepler: the closest we have to a policy is the wiki document http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?MinimumSoftwareVersions
07:47 AM jepler: the closest we have to a policy is the wiki document http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?MinimumSoftwareVersions
07:47 AM jepler: it states that master branch supports all these old compilers
07:48 AM jepler: go fetch us a consensus and we'll change it
07:49 AM rene_dev_: 2 of the 5 are end of life distros, and I honestly dont understand why we support linuxcnc on end of life distros, which you cant even install on some hardware anymore
07:50 AM rene_dev_: and jessie will be eol in few months
07:50 AM rene_dev_: I write a mail about it later today.
07:52 AM jepler: 2.8 has been in the works way too long. I'm all but certain that we promised 2.8 would support all those listed architectures. There's little reason not to make good on that promise.
07:52 AM jepler: Master is a different story, since it is branched from 2.8 now, and I'm happy to see it modified based on consensus
07:52 AM jepler: but we should not change the supported list just because somebody commits something that doesn't work on all the architectures that we intend to support
07:53 AM jepler: we need to make a decision and that's not just one person saying on chat "I don't see why ..."
07:53 AM jepler: but our decision making process is in a shambles because nobody wants to decide things, so there you go
07:53 AM jepler: I am just trying to keep the wheels on this crazy car with my efforts
07:54 AM rmu|w: a somewhat related question: are there plans regarding python2/python3?
07:55 AM jepler: I'm going to step away for a minute because I am letting my responses become somewhat emotional.
07:56 AM jepler: rmu|w: we would love to see contributions that help us move towards python3 support. it is a big effort, which several people including me have started but failed to make real headway on. nobody has charted a way that lets us do it piecemeal, which would also help greatly. it's also unfortunate for our users that their existing python remaps will be broken by a python3 transition.
08:00 AM rene_dev_: rmu|w there are multiple branches that started, and some even work. cleaning that up is my next task.
08:01 AM rene_dev_: jepler I updated the wiki page to include the eol date. there are only 2 distros with support.
08:26 AM jepler: if rene_dev_ is further along than me on python3, awesome
08:36 AM jepler: drat, I was mistaken, and not all the 2.8 package brokenness is fixed. I was fooled by 0000-checkin being green. continuing to work on it.
08:58 AM andypugh: How feasible is it to switch to Python3 in Master? Is there anything that is on the supported list that _can’t_ run Python3?
08:59 AM linuxcnc-build: build #4158 of 4009.deb-precise-rtai-i386 is complete: Failure [4failed shell_3 shell_4] Build details are at http://buildbot.linuxcnc.org/buildbot/builders/4009.deb-precise-rtai-i386/builds/4158 blamelist: Jeff Epler <jepler@gmail.com>
09:00 AM linuxcnc-build: build #5329 of 4008.deb-precise-amd64 is complete: Failure [4failed shell_3 shell_4] Build details are at http://buildbot.linuxcnc.org/buildbot/builders/4008.deb-precise-amd64/builds/5329 blamelist: Jeff Epler <jepler@gmail.com>
09:00 AM dgarr: jepler: your help is much appreciated, using the buildbot 'grid' view spots problems with less scrolling than 'waterfall' for me
09:00 AM linuxcnc-build: build #3898 of 4016.deb-wheezy-i386 is complete: Failure [4failed shell_3 shell_4] Build details are at http://buildbot.linuxcnc.org/buildbot/builders/4016.deb-wheezy-i386/builds/3898 blamelist: Jeff Epler <jepler@gmail.com>

09:06 AM linuxcnc-build: build #3901 of 4017.deb-wheezy-amd64 is complete: Failure [4failed shell_3 shell_4] Build details are at http://buildbot.linuxcnc.org/buildbot/builders/4017.deb-wheezy-amd64/builds/3901 blamelist: Jeff Epler <jepler@gmail.com>
09:13 AM andypugh: And, the XHC thing. Is it worth the trouble? It’s just a little driver, surely it doesn’t _need_ advanced new bits of C++?
09:14 AM linuxcnc-build: build #3160 of 4014.deb-wheezy-rtpreempt-i386 is complete: Failure [4failed shell_3 shell_4] Build details are at http://buildbot.linuxcnc.org/buildbot/builders/4014.deb-wheezy-rtpreempt-i386/builds/3160 blamelist: Jeff Epler <jepler@gmail.com>
09:14 AM linuxcnc-build: build #3191 of 4015.deb-wheezy-rtpreempt-amd64 is complete: Failure [4failed shell_3 shell_4] Build details are at http://buildbot.linuxcnc.org/buildbot/builders/4015.deb-wheezy-rtpreempt-amd64/builds/3191 blamelist: Jeff Epler <jepler@gmail.com>
09:36 AM jepler: andypugh: no, it doesn't need them but there were enough to make me "nope" out of doing the very boring task of making it C++11 compatible
09:38 AM jepler: "modern" C++ and the C++ supported on wheezy might as well be different languages, anything written by someone who is not hidebound and is using a compiler with C++17 support will have a lot of stuff that doesn't work at all in the older standard.
09:39 AM jepler: (and it's really an indictment of how bad C++11 and C++03 were that next to no idiomatic C++17 is compatible with either of them)
09:39 AM andypugh: Can we push this chore back on the author?
09:40 AM jepler: I don't know how responsive the author is.
09:41 AM jepler: I don't know if it's worth raising a ruckus if rene_dev_ is planning to build consensus to drop old platform support in master branch; this new driver is only in master and not in 2.8, I think.
09:42 AM jepler: (if the author is, then installing wheezy in a vm and just going through all the errors is the only way to do it)
09:42 AM andypugh: The author seemed fairly chatty on the forum.
09:51 AM linuxcnc-build: build #3588 of 4018.deb-wheezy-rtai-i386 is complete: Failure [4failed shell_3 shell_4] Build details are at http://buildbot.linuxcnc.org/buildbot/builders/4018.deb-wheezy-rtai-i386/builds/3588 blamelist: Jeff Epler <jepler@gmail.com>
10:33 AM rene_dev_: jepler andypugh the mpg is very popular, and the only cheap chinese mpg available, that’s why I want support in 2.8
10:34 AM rene_dev_: the previous version isn’t available anymore
10:34 AM andypugh: Anyone who wants to jog with USB should use Mach 3 :-)
10:34 AM rene_dev_: I know 3 pepole that are desperate to use it
10:34 AM rene_dev_: agree :D
10:34 AM rene_dev_: I dont like it as well
10:34 AM rene_dev_: its wireless, yuck
10:35 AM rene_dev_: but it’s popular
10:35 AM Tom_L: at least a couple on irc are working to get that mpg up and going..
10:37 AM andypugh: rene_dev_: I am working on the “updating linuxCNC” docs. There are translations in French (extremely out of date) and Spanish (out of date, and not actually in Spanish). I was going to Google-Tramslate them. DO you think that a German version would be useful? And do you know any germans who could give it a read-through?
10:40 AM andypugh: It’s not a completey simple process, as GT translates pin names (defintiely wrong) and menu / command names (maybe wrong? May depend on localisation)
10:46 AM rene_dev_: please dont use google translate
10:47 AM rene_dev_: I cant do it, but I can ask in a german linuxcnc user group
10:47 AM rene_dev_: all my machines are set up in english, and I dont like the german words, they confuse me.
10:48 AM rene_dev_: and the word for feed override is so long, you can hardly use the slider :D
10:49 AM andypugh: GT isn’t perfect, but my idea was to make it an editing job rather than a translation job, which might be less intimidating.
10:51 AM rene_dev_: I didnt even know there was a german documentation
10:51 AM rene_dev_: I can ask norbert to look at the spanish one, he speaks good spanish
11:05 AM andypugh: There isn’t any German docs.
11:05 AM rene_dev_: so you only mean localization?
11:06 AM andypugh: I was thinking about adding some very basic “getting started” docs.
11:07 AM rene_dev_: ah
11:08 AM rene_dev_: pepole do seem to complain about the need to know english to get started
11:11 AM andypugh: We have Chinese, French and Spanish, but the latter are very out of date. And one little bit of Vietnamese. Though I don’t know if there is any way to get to see the vietnamese page
11:13 AM andypugh: http://linuxcnc.org/docs/2.8/html/gcode_vi.html
11:14 AM andypugh: Ah, I see, you can get the gcode_vi from the CNC menu.
11:21 AM rmu|w: i can also review/help with german dox
11:42 AM rene_dev_: andypugh pepole are willing to help, what exactly should they do?
11:43 AM andypugh: It would be nice to have all of https://github.com/LinuxCNC/linuxcnc/tree/master/docs/src/getting-started
11:44 AM andypugh: But “getting LinuxCNC” and “Updating LinuxCNC” would be a good start.
11:44 AM andypugh: However, note that both of those will change in details when 2.8 is ready to launch.

12:18 PM rmu|w: i extended pncconf for mesa 7c80 rpi interface, but i seem to have problems with the connector-mapping
12:21 PM rmu|w: it seems connectors all have to have the same number of pins
12:25 PM linuxcnc-build: build #5330 of 4008.deb-precise-amd64 is complete: Failure [4failed shell_3 shell_4] Build details are at http://buildbot.linuxcnc.org/buildbot/builders/4008.deb-precise-amd64/builds/5330 blamelist: Jeff Epler <jepler@unpythonic.net>, Jeff Epler <jepler@gmail.com>

12:35 PM andypugh: rmu|w: Is that a pncconf limitiation?
12:37 PM rmu|w: seems so
12:40 PM andypugh: You probably need Chris Morley for that. You are probably already ahead of the rest of us where pncconf is concerned.
12:40 PM rmu|w: completely unexpected: using "hm2_rpspi" in the desc of the card just works
12:41 PM rmu|w: you can try and tune axis
12:47 PM rmu|w: seems this will need some hacking to get the muxed inputs supported
12:52 PM rene_dev_: andypugh pepole ask for dgarr switchkins
12:53 PM rene_dev_: as far as I can see its just a kins, include it in 2.8?
12:56 PM andypugh: Should be OK as long as it builds clean, I guess.
12:57 PM andypugh: (though I am not sure it’s the best way to do it, a G-code to ignore kins and send XYZ etc direct to joints might be neater. G1.1, G1.2
12:57 PM rene_dev_: I donnt even know what it does :D
12:58 PM rene_dev_: ah!
12:58 PM rene_dev_: I know what you mean
12:58 PM rene_dev_: actually that is required for robots as well
12:59 PM andypugh: dgarr: Switchkins in 2.8? What do you think?
01:00 PM dgarr: no -- it needs testing on (servo based) hardware first in my opinion, the interested users have not done so
01:01 PM andypugh: I suspect. also, that anyone who knows that it exists also know enough to run Master from the buildbot.
01:03 PM linuxcnc-build: build #3192 of 4015.deb-wheezy-rtpreempt-amd64 is complete: Failure [4failed shell_3 shell_4] Build details are at http://buildbot.linuxcnc.org/buildbot/builders/4015.deb-wheezy-rtpreempt-amd64/builds/3192 blamelist: Jeff Epler <jepler@unpythonic.net>, Jeff Epler <jepler@gmail.com>

01:31 PM andypugh: rene_dev_: What exactly does it do?
01:32 PM andypugh: We have had many pocket fixes over the years…
01:32 PM rene_dev_: yes, but mine works ;D
01:32 PM rene_dev_: described in my mail, it sets the pocket numbers everywhere properly
01:33 PM rene_dev_: it seems to work, but I dont like it. changing it to my liking requires significant changes.
01:36 PM andypugh: email when?
01:37 PM andypugh: Ah, 7/4/20?
01:37 PM rene_dev_: jepler andypugh https://github.com/LinuxCNC/linuxcnc/pull/742
01:38 PM rene_dev_: Im currently looking into more compiler warnings
01:38 PM rene_dev_: andypugh the one that went completley offtopic
01:38 PM rmu|w: pncconf assumes maximum port width to be 24, 7c80 has port width 27 :(
01:38 PM rene_dev_: where I said 3 times that you are not affedted unless you have a toolchanger
01:38 PM rene_dev_: rmu|w are you using my pocket fix branch?
01:39 PM rmu|w: rene_dev_: not yet, i'm using a fixed mapping tool-number to pocket number in the gcode
01:39 PM rene_dev_: rmu|w can you test it?
01:39 PM rmu|w: on monday
01:39 PM rene_dev_: rmu|w https://github.com/LinuxCNC/linuxcnc/tree/2.8-pocket-fix
01:41 PM rmu|w: yeah, i will have a look. i need to work on the toolchanger in any case, add 5 additional pockets ;)
01:43 PM andypugh: rene_dev_: Put the tool number fix in. It looks good, it has tests and it is definitely a bug fix.
01:44 PM rene_dev_: ok, I will maintain it in case problems arise
01:44 PM andypugh: My only complaint is that it still uses “pocket” to mean “array index” in the code.
01:45 PM andypugh: (bit only internally)
01:46 PM rene_dev_: yes, it should not do that
01:46 PM -!- #linuxcnc-devel mode set to +v by ChanServ
01:46 PM rene_dev_: good news is, linuxcnc does compile with clang, bad news is, even more warnings :D

03:19 PM jepler: I don't understand the question. For the linuxcnc build itself you could run 'make V=1' to see the commands that are issued. You could use system commands like find or locate to find files with a specific name like foo.h
03:19 PM rene_dev_: https://github.com/LinuxCNC/linuxcnc/blob/master/src/hal/utils/halcompile.g#L272
03:19 PM jepler: If you are invoking halcompile --compile otherwise, I am not sure how to make it verbose and see commandlines
03:20 PM rene_dev_: do you think its a good idea to include some more headers here?
03:20 PM rene_dev_: like <stdlib.h>
03:20 PM jepler: no, probably not.
03:21 PM jepler: well, I don't know what error you're seeing. There are two possibilities that I'm guessing at
03:21 PM jepler: first, that some header like rtapi_string.h is not self-sufficient under clang. If so, it is rtapi_string.h that should be "fixed"
03:21 PM rene_dev_: error: implicitly declaring library function 'abs' with type 'int (int)'
03:21 PM rene_dev_: note: include the header <stdlib.h> or explicitly provide a declaration for 'abs'
03:22 PM rene_dev_: clang defaults to -Werror,-Wimplicit-function-declaration
03:22 PM jepler: this is an error building a specific component?
03:23 PM rene_dev_: yes, plasmac.comp after I changed fabs to abs
03:23 PM rene_dev_: it was using fabs for absing 2 ints, and it generated a warning
03:25 PM jepler: I doubt the header <stdlib.h> can be included in kernel space
03:25 PM jepler: icbw
03:26 PM jepler: anyway, second, that a particular component wasn't sufficient with those listed headers. In that case I'd recommend to fix the component by adding a #include directive after ;;
03:26 PM jepler: but now you've got the problem that there is no header to safely provide a declaration of abs for both rtai and uspace realtime systems
03:26 PM rene_dev_: it cant be included in kernel space
03:26 PM jepler: in that case we have created rtapi_xxx headers in the past
03:26 PM rene_dev_: but having a int abs function does make sense in hal components :D
03:27 PM jepler: https://elixir.bootlin.com/linux/latest/source/include/linux/kernel.h#L268
03:28 PM jepler: so now need a new header, which includes <linux/kernel.h> in kernel space and stdlib.h otherwise
03:28 PM jepler: what functions/macros do we promise it defines? idk
03:29 PM jepler: (that set of compiler flags rejects valid C programs, because calling abs(1) without a prototype is fully defined thanks to legacy K&R C)
03:30 PM jepler: so, yeah, on reflection .. like fabs(), abs() is sane for components to "expect" to be available
03:31 PM rene_dev_: gcc fails with the same error
03:31 PM jepler: rc/hal/components/sphereprobe.comp:int abs(int x) { if(x < 0) return -x; else return x; }
03:31 PM jepler: well that's one way to fix it
03:31 PM rene_dev_: https://github.com/LinuxCNC/linuxcnc/blob/master/src/hal/components/plasmac.comp#L1352
03:32 PM rene_dev_: it complains about possible loss of precision here, which is a valid warning
03:32 PM rene_dev_: https://github.com/LinuxCNC/linuxcnc/blob/master/src/rtapi/rtapi_math.h
03:33 PM rene_dev_: I think this is a good place to put it
03:34 PM rene_dev_: I guess its not a real problem, you start loosing precision with numbers above 24 bit
03:34 PM jepler: no, fabs() should be dealing in doubles so it would be numbers above 53 bits, or no possible 32-bit ints
03:34 PM jepler: it's still needlessly heavy and crass
03:35 PM jepler: so sure, chuck something into rtapi_math to ensure a prototype or macro abs() is available
03:36 PM rene_dev_: is kernel.h included in rtapi?
03:36 PM rene_dev_: in case of userspace I can use the stdlib.h
03:36 PM jepler: No, quick search looks like it's not generically included. e.g., we have src/rtapi/rtapi_limits.h:#include <linux/kernel.h>
03:37 PM rene_dev_: so its safe to include in rtapi_math.h?
03:38 PM jepler: I guess?
03:38 PM jepler: I mean, you'll bring a bunch of new identifiers into every .comp file so there may be problems
03:38 PM jepler: especially if they are macros
03:38 PM rene_dev_: yes, they are already starting to go bad :D
03:39 PM jepler: you just have to feed it to buildbot and find out, assuming you haven't got rtai locally
03:39 PM rene_dev_: I dont, but even the stdlib.h in userspace blows up
03:39 PM jepler: first off you can only include it #if defined(KERNEL) right
03:40 PM rene_dev_: I go with a simple implementaion like the sphereprobe comp does
03:40 PM rene_dev_: in rtapi_math.h
03:46 PM jepler: the problem I ran into here was a problem due to a component using "state" as a variable. renaming it state_ would fix that.
03:47 PM linuxcnc-build: build #6676 of 0000.checkin is complete: Failure [4failed] Build details are at http://buildbot.linuxcnc.org/buildbot/builders/0000.checkin/builds/6676 blamelist: Jeff Epler <jepler@gmail.com>
04:15 PM andypugh: Cast the int to a flat before abs-ing it.
04:16 PM andypugh: It’s not the _right_ answer, but all we really need to do is stop the compiler complaining about some code that works fine.
04:16 PM rene_dev_: it doesnt solve the problem clang is complainign about
04:16 PM linuxcnc-build: build #38 of 1650.rip-buster-rtpreempt-rpi4 is complete: Failure [4failed clear-dmesg apt-get-update install-missing-build-dependencies configuring] Build details are at http://buildbot.linuxcnc.org/buildbot/builders/1650.rip-buster-rtpreempt-rpi4/builds/38 blamelist: Rene Hopf <renehopf@mac.com>
04:17 PM rene_dev_: its not a real issue, but I think its strange you cant use abs() in hal components :D
04:18 PM andypugh: x = (x < 0) ? -x : x
04:19 PM andypugh: (That way you avoid the negative zero)
04:20 PM rene_dev_: ints dont have negative zeros
04:21 PM rene_dev_: I know how to calculate abs, that isnt the issue :D
04:21 PM andypugh: Good point. Err, that was the cat walking on the keyboard.
04:21 PM rene_dev_: smart cat
04:26 PM andypugh: I wonder if the compiler creates the same code for abs and if/else?
04:36 PM rmu|w: in gcc 9.3 the code is identical
04:37 PM rmu|w: https://godbolt.org/z/zNDy4K
04:39 PM rmu|w: clang differs, but that is without optimization
04:41 PM skunkworks: I have used fabs()
04:41 PM rene_dev_: fabs works
04:41 PM skunkworks: nevermind..
04:42 PM skunkworks: I didn't read up far enough./
