01:44 AM CaptHindsight: after a week of tweaking preempt_rt is about as fast as RTAI on Ryzen, 30K servo thread, 20K base
01:47 AM CaptHindsight: down from the 200-200K range
01:47 AM CaptHindsight: heh 200k - 300K
10:05 AM jthornton: mozmck: if you get lubuntu 19 going with the rt kernel let me know which one you used, 5.0.19-rt11 won't boot up
11:44 AM mozmck: jthornton: It may be a bit before I can test it much. I did just get 28 computers (I can probably get half or more working) so I'll have some to test with. All the computers I had already are tied up with other systems.
11:45 AM JT-Shop: I backed up a notch to 5.0.14-rt9, building it now
11:45 AM JT-Shop: 28 computers will CRT's?
12:09 PM mozmck: no, just the computers. some are missing parts, but I'm sure some work.
12:09 PM mozmck: They were throwing them away at work so I backed my van up and loaded them up :-D
12:17 PM JT-Shop: what kind of processors?
12:22 PM skunkworks: I have some hp's running rt_preempt that do 25us base thread
12:31 PM mozmck: There are some core2-duo HPs, the rest are Dell with various processors
12:31 PM mozmck: Maybe even some core-i5
12:32 PM mozmck: skunkworks: that's not bad!
12:56 PM CaptHindsight: JT-Shop: kernel version should not matter for the distro, unless *buntu is doing something really stupid
12:58 PM CaptHindsight: from experience *buntu is terrible with how they build kernels and support graphics
12:58 PM jthornton: had that happen with Lubuntu 18 too, tried to run on the latest rt patch and it gave me gibberish on the screen
01:29 PM mozmck: jthornton: you're building a vanilla kernel though right?
01:42 PM CaptHindsight: likely, the first thing we generally have to do is turn off KMS when booting in *ubuntu
02:10 PM jthornton: mozmck: building a rt preempt patched kernel
02:10 PM jthornton: CaptHindsight: what is KMS and how do you turn it off?
02:10 PM mozmck: yeah, but you start with a vanilla kernel right - not one from ubuntu?
02:10 PM mozmck: Kernel Mode Setting
02:11 PM jthornton: right I get the kernel from mirrors.edge.kernel.org
02:11 PM mozmck: It's been a long time since I had to disable KMS - and I run *buntu extensively on a pretty good variety of machines.
02:11 PM jthornton: turn that off in the make xconfig?
02:12 PM mozmck: You can do it in the kernel command line in grub - like isolcpus
02:12 PM jthornton: http://gnipsel.com/linuxcnc/uspace/lubuntu19-rt.html
02:12 PM jthornton: that's what I have so far
02:13 PM mozmck: How does the desktop interface seem?
02:13 PM jthornton: quite different and seems a bit cleaner
02:14 PM jthornton: only thing I was surprised at it installs open office along with all that gnome stuff
02:14 PM mozmck: what gnome stuff?
02:15 PM jthornton: dunno it went by too fast to read but when it updated open office I saw a bunch of gnome's go by
02:15 PM mozmck: I see. probably libraries that various programs depend on.
02:15 PM jthornton: yea that's what I figured too
02:19 PM jthornton: did the changelog entry look ok this time?
02:24 PM mozmck: jthornton: I think it's missing a bit. The Joints/Axes branch was merged in this release, and I think G52 added - multispindle?
02:24 PM mozmck: but that is the basic idea and a good start
02:25 PM mozmck: what ethernet cards are supported that weren't in 2.7?
02:31 PM JT-Shop: ah yea multi spindle forgot about that
02:31 PM JT-Shop: 7i96
02:37 PM mozmck: ah - is your config tool for that in there or is it separate?
02:40 PM andypugh: I am trying to merge reverse-run in to 2.9 (I was waiting for a parcel to arrive….)
02:40 PM JT-Shop: it's still in my github repo, I started trying to figure out how to add it but got stuck with something... I think where to put it and the menu
02:40 PM andypugh: But I think I am missing a trick to emable the feature?
02:41 PM JT-Shop: https://github.com/jethornton/7i96
02:41 PM JT-Shop: right now I have it setup to get installed with pip
02:42 PM JT-Shop: andypugh: https://emc-developers.narkive.com/Vskjwlkm/reverse-run
02:50 PM andypugh: Hmm, maybe the reverse-run in Linuxcnc isn’t the real version?
02:50 PM andypugh: (and I have _no_ idea what features/reverse-run-master2 is… )
02:59 PM jthornton: somehow plasmac has reverse run going
02:59 PM mozmck: Rob talked like he wanted to work on getting reverse run in master. He has direct push access now
03:00 PM jthornton: great
03:01 PM jthornton: andypugh: does the $ work with M5 as well as M3 and M4?
03:01 PM andypugh: I think so
03:01 PM andypugh: (it’s been a while)
03:03 PM jthornton: I have a multi spindle sim somewhere I'll test it out
03:06 PM mozmck: andypugh: https://sourceforge.net/p/emc/mailman/message/36673488/
03:06 PM mozmck: boy, the mailing list on sourceforge is not real easy to search
03:07 PM mozmck: And here is the response from Phill https://sourceforge.net/p/emc/mailman/message/36673511/
03:10 PM jthornton: I guess I'll have to install Lubuntu 19 again I can't get the grub menu to pick the generic kernel
03:15 PM andypugh: mozmck: I am working from the rellenberg repo, and sorting the conflicts my way :-)
