07:52 AM jepler: seb_kuzminsky: https://lists.debian.org/debian-arm/2017/09/msg00030.html Summary of the Arm ports BoF at DC17
07:52 AM jepler: discusses the troubles of finding armhf & arm64 build hardwaree
07:52 AM jepler: has a few hardware suggestions
10:51 AM seb_kuzminsky: jepler: thanks
11:07 AM seb_kuzminsky: jepler: the macchiatobin is comparable in specs and price to the softiron overdrive 1000 that we talked about back in February
11:08 AM jepler: seb_kuzminsky: the solid-run.com page didn't really seem to have specs, did you find a proper specs link?
11:10 AM jepler: http://wiki.macchiatobin.net/tiki-index.php seems to have some more info
11:10 AM seb_kuzminsky: http://macchiatobin.net/tech-spec/
11:11 AM seb_kuzminsky: the model with 16 GB RAM and a US power supply costs $508
11:11 AM seb_kuzminsky: that's for a bare board, compared to $599 for the overdrive 1000 with 8 GB RAM, in a case
11:12 AM seb_kuzminsky: oh and the overdrive comes with a 1 TB disk
11:14 AM jepler: hmph doesn't boot from SATA :-/ according to the list of switch settings at http://wiki.macchiatobin.net/tiki-index.php?page=MACCHIATObin+Interface+list
11:15 AM seb_kuzminsky: dafuq?
11:15 AM seb_kuzminsky: sooo, so close
11:16 AM seb_kuzminsky: ok i see no reason at all to choose the macchiatobin over the overdrive1k then
11:16 AM seb_kuzminsky: it's just... $600 for 4 cores in 2017 seems weird
11:17 AM jepler: the softiron also seems to be in a case
11:17 AM seb_kuzminsky: yeah
11:17 AM seb_kuzminsky: not a rackmount case, but still
11:18 AM seb_kuzminsky: i think the macchiatobin *can* boot from sata: http://wiki.macchiatobin.net/tiki-index.php?page=Use+SATA+drives+in+U-Boot
11:19 AM seb_kuzminsky: i guess it runs uboot (off emmc or microsd?), then uboot can be made to boot from sata
11:20 AM jepler: > By default, the MACCHIATObin is setup to load the bootloader(ARM Trusted Firmware + U-Boot) binary from the on board SPI flash during the boot stage. The board can also be setup to load the bootloader image from the different sources such as on board eMMC and removable Micro SD Card
11:20 AM jepler: aha
11:20 AM jepler: you're right
11:20 AM seb_kuzminsky: the macchiatobin uses the standard mini atx form factor, so at least finding cases for it should be easy
11:21 AM jepler: also a big decision, I'm trying to figure out whether there's anything interesting enough to warrant getting up early to watch the "cassini big finale".
11:22 AM jepler: it seems like .. maybe not much ?
11:22 AM seb_kuzminsky: the only console is serial, no video
11:23 AM seb_kuzminsky: i guess that's fine for a server
11:23 AM jepler: but also you can't access the serial port without cracking the case afaict
11:23 AM seb_kuzminsky: i meant on the macchiatobin
11:23 AM seb_kuzminsky: no case, no problem!
11:25 AM jepler: I guess the microsd usb serial console would be accessible, it's there on the back edge with everything else
11:25 AM jepler: even if you put it in an atx case
11:26 AM seb_kuzminsky: the od1k also has no video out, but it has a usb port on the back of the case with a serial console on it
11:26 AM seb_kuzminsky: http://cdn.softiron.com/OD1000_QSGv1.pdf
11:27 AM jepler: # ifconfig
11:27 AM jepler: eth2 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:00:00:00:00:05
11:27 AM jepler: yay another board so broken it doesn't have an ethernet address
11:27 AM seb_kuzminsky: the od1k uses uefi, like the debian arm boffins like, the macchiatobin uses uboot, like they don't like
11:27 AM jepler: (seen on http://wiki.macchiatobin.net/tiki-index.php?page=Quick+Start+Guide)
11:27 AM cradek: jeez
11:28 AM seb_kuzminsky: eh, everything's software defined, it just doesn't have the right drivers or firmware or something loaded
11:28 AM jepler: yeah I forget which board, but you were supposed to pick your own MAC address and write it to a file
11:28 AM jepler: maybe it was part of the ubutter
11:28 AM seb_kuzminsky: heh
11:29 AM seb_kuzminsky: https://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/random_number.png
11:29 AM jepler: yup
11:30 AM jepler: why in the world did they mount the micro sd console connector to the underside of the board? would it really be accessible once installed in an ATX case?
11:31 AM jepler: https://www.solid-run.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/MacchiatoBin-Front.jpg
11:31 AM jepler: looks like maybe they ran out of space or something
11:31 AM seb_kuzminsky: i see nothing about the macchiatobin that would make me choose it over the overdrive 1k
11:31 AM jepler: well thanks for taking the time to look
11:32 AM seb_kuzminsky: window shopping beats working
11:32 AM jepler: seb_kuzminsky: did you see I had asked your permission to merge some things to 2.7? the fix to make stepconf & pncconf translate; and that chinese translation
11:33 AM seb_kuzminsky: it must be one of those emails i havent clicked on yet
11:33 AM jepler: OK
11:33 AM jepler: no big deal, I speak english anyway
11:34 AM skunkworks: I talk pretty one day...
11:36 AM seb_kuzminsky: and i see @solitary fixed the tooltip thing i balked at last time
11:36 AM jepler: yes, I think so
11:37 AM skunkworks: do we see more people contributing now? or is it too early to say
11:37 AM seb_kuzminsky: we see more, i think
11:37 AM seb_kuzminsky: once again jepler's steering has improved our project and our community
11:38 AM skunkworks: Yay!
11:41 AM jepler: I think this is the coolest thing I've 3D printed: https://photos.app.goo.gl/tOTdpgP6n7jHUAOx1
11:42 AM seb_kuzminsky: neat!
11:42 AM skunkworks: Nice! how long?
11:42 AM jepler: 22 hours
11:42 AM skunkworks: Heh - nice!
11:44 AM jepler: it's a clever design -- it has a continuous cross section, so you can (and I did) print it in vase mode. No retracts or moves, just continuous extraction from bottom to top (modulo slicer bugs, there was at least one random move somewhere in the middle..)
