10:17 AM jepler: I went ahead and did frankendistro. I can boot to a desktop and run latency-histogram. the image is 2GB. I don't think it'll install right though.
07:50 PM jepler: the "live installer" *does* successfully install, including getting LinuxCNC and the preempt-rt kernel, BUT it needs network access to do it
07:50 PM jepler: MOST stuff is on the image but SOME stuff is downloaded
08:03 PM jepler: https://emergent.unpythonic.net/files/sandbox/stretch-installed-rtpreempt.png
08:06 PM skunkworks: I really don
08:06 PM skunkworks: I really don't see that as a problem
08:06 PM skunkworks: btw - stella is still talking about you two
08:07 PM jepler: I hope she's saying good things!
08:07 PM skunkworks: of course!
08:07 PM jepler: cradek_: what was that magic program you used for syncing a debian image around? I wonder if it works with this live-install thing
08:08 PM jepler: Fetched 1339 MB in 13s (98.5 MB/s)
08:08 PM jepler: you can't argue with squid-deb-proxy once it's working!
08:09 PM skunkworks: are you going with 64bit version?
08:09 PM jepler: skunkworks: that's what I've been playing with so far
08:10 PM skunkworks: I think that is great also
08:10 PM skunkworks: jepler, about 1/2 way done with the steel head
08:10 PM skunkworks: it is machining well
08:10 PM jepler: nice!
08:10 PM jepler: I only use 64-bit OS installs anymore, unless I have a reason not to.
08:11 PM jepler: anyway, trying to build a 32-bit live image from a 64-bit os install seemed like an extra variable I'd ignore to begin with
08:11 PM jepler: I don't know what our users want or need
08:11 PM jepler: (that's the sort of thing that would end up in the /topic at $DAY_JOB if I said it)
08:13 PM skunkworks: the only thing I can think of is if the rtai kernel only works on 32bit - then it would be hard to switch between them once something is working
08:21 PM skunkworks: (i would rather have 64bit - all the rt_preempt machines are running 64bit at the shop_
08:22 PM seb_kuzminsky: jepler: zsync
08:22 PM jepler: ah I bet cradek's magic tool is "zsync" (he had typed earlier, before being called away to move two tables around)
08:22 PM jepler: ;-)
08:23 PM jepler: real 13m8.350s
08:23 PM jepler: user 36m10.392s
08:23 PM jepler: sys 1m27.372s
08:23 PM jepler: building these images really isn't that bad in terms of time either
08:31 PM jepler: seb_kuzminsky: where on wlo can I put files, such that jekyll updating won't nuke them?
08:39 PM jepler: and it boots when on an actual USB stick
08:46 PM jepler: .. looks like 2 hours to copy it to wlo. I hope someone else will be interested in trying it.
08:53 PM skunkworks: jepler, I will. I have not played with stretch yet
09:00 PM skunkworks: the little bit I have played with a velocity / position loop - the FE is much less on a tuned velocity-PID loop vs position. Like magnitudes less.
09:01 PM jepler: dual PIDs inside LinuxCNC HAL?
09:02 PM skunkworks: no. Just stepgen position vs velocity
09:02 PM jepler: oh!
09:03 PM skunkworks: not that it is much anyway - but we are talking tenths vs way less than tenths..
09:05 PM jepler: fwiw I tossed the scripts on github https://github.com/jepler/stretch-live-build
09:05 PM jepler: you could have your own image built before mine finishes uploading ;-)
09:06 PM jepler: there's .. surprisingly little to it
09:16 PM jepler: (but also I think there are a lot fewer customization points AT ALL compared to the last CD building thing that cradek used for wheezy)
09:17 PM jepler: s/CD/installer
09:40 PM jepler: in about 80 minutes there might be files here: http://www.linuxcnc.org/testing-stretch-amd64-rtpreempt/ (progress on the main .iso: 906,133,504 43% 286.70kB/s 1:09:45)
09:56 PM jepler: afk for the night, tired of watching the progress bar :-P
