Back
[07:38:46] <jthornton> the download link goes to the docs so now you can't download an older version if for example you have an older PC and the HD dies and you just need to reinstall an older OS
[08:25:58] <jepler> how would you like to handle it? Here are some ideas that come to mind: Move download out of docs and to the website, move old version installation into the docs, maintain the information in two places, maintain a special "download old versions" page on the main website and leave docs alone?
[08:27:01] <jepler> the way to make changes to the www.linuxcnc.org website is with pull reqests to https://github.com/SebKuzminsky/wlo -- I'm sure that seb_kuzminsky woudld also be happy to set you up to push directly there.
[08:27:05] <jepler> if he has not already
[08:27:12] <JT-Shop> hmm, I don't like maintaining the same thing in two places, how about a link in the docs to older verstions?
[08:28:00] <JT-Shop> I don't think I'm setup yet
[08:31:17] <jepler> the old page for your reference is here: https://github.com/SebKuzminsky/wlo/blob/fda85b30e46b4e45cb576763b029daa3fb34f374/download/installing-emc2.md
[10:43:00] <seb_kuzminsky> i always thought it was a mistake to have install instructions for older versions prominently displayed, but i might be wrong about that
[10:49:43] <seb_kuzminsky> maybe we should add a download page in the docs, with a link to each version's install docs, and leave the real docs in the main git
[10:50:10] <Tom_itx> if they're clearly marked it could be a plus
[10:53:34] <Tom_itx> then to decide how many vers to keep
[10:54:09] <Roguish> If I might. Current versions should be first and prominent, both downloads and docs. Older versions should be referred to and pointed to. They are still important.
[10:54:22] <Tom_itx> put the old ones in an 'unsupported' section
[10:55:35] <Tom_itx> if nothing else it will serve as a reminder of all the sweat you poured over them
[10:57:45] <Roguish> Definitely distinguish between actively support and not supported but still available. Is there a difference between 'end of life' and 'end of active support'? Sometime, somehow, older versions have to be let go. They become time sucks to 'actively' support.
[11:00:57] <Roguish> ok, back under ground. I'm not saying anything that you'all don't already know. sorry.

[11:52:55] <fenn> i'm getting a few emails a day from kunena since december 4th, it seems to think i'm a moderator in various forum topics even though i'm not listed as such. also i seem to be able to edit and moderate other peoples' posts, and i can read the moderator's forum. i never use the forum so i assume this is a bug related to the recent upgrade.

[12:30:09] <jepler> fenn: I manually copied permissions from the old www.linuxcnc.org joomla site, where you were an administrator. If you want me to drop your permissions back to registered user, I can do that.
[12:31:52] <jepler> .. just let me know
[12:58:31] <fenn> jepler: it's probably best that i be reverted to a regular user. i am not very active with linuxcnc at the moment and don't really know what i'm doing with joomla, so my account can only be an additional security weak-point
[13:15:08] <skunkworks> expecially because his password is 'password'
[13:25:35] <jepler> fenn: will do.
[13:26:19] <jepler> fenn: if you get any more unwanted e-mails please don't hesitate to ask about it.
