[08:23:42] <skunkworks> WTH - jepler is posting on the forums. what is happening!!
[08:25:13] <skunkworks> (the new forum is really nice - thanks you again)
[08:48:26] <jepler> contrary to my wishes, but in accordance with my expectations, I seem to be expected to maintain the forum now
[08:48:30] <jepler> so I guess I might as well use it too
[08:53:36] <cradek> I'm glad you're maintaining it, thank you
[08:54:16] <seb_kuzminsky> yes thanks jepler, it seems really popular and useful
[08:59:29] <mozmck> When someone posts spam like this: https://forum.linuxcnc.org/forum/30-cnc-machines/30024-gopro-hero-4k-videos-enable-in-windows-live-movie#66357
[08:59:59] <mozmck> should I delete the user also? This is his first post as far as I can tell.
[09:25:14] <skunkworks> I would...
[09:36:00] <mozmck> I disabled him anyhow.
[10:48:10] <cradek> mozmck: I also appreciate you and all the other moderators
[10:48:16] <jepler> yes I would delete the user right away
[10:49:01] <jepler> I don't know the distinction between delete vs disable, so if disabling is perfectly adequate at making them and their spam post go away that's fine
[10:51:50] <mozmck> disabling leaves the user there, but makes so he can't do anything. It should also prevent him from creating another user with the same email address - if that helps anything.
[10:52:06] <cradek> sure might
[11:18:26] <cncbasher> i kicked off a few spam forum messages lately , and was wondering how to dump the poster or lock him out
[11:20:11] <mozmck> cncbasher: I think you have to have admin privileges and do it from the administrator section
[11:20:47] <mozmck> At least that's how I did it...
[11:21:24] <cncbasher> i'd have thought it would be helpfull to have it at moderators level too
[11:22:33] <mozmck> You would think. Maybe it can be set up that way.
[11:22:41] <cncbasher> if i remove the message fine , but it still leaves the person able to post again
[11:25:53] <cncbasher> so it would mean us , sending a internal mail to admin to remove user , in that case
[11:26:06] <cncbasher> so creating more work between us
[11:28:07] <mozmck> Looks like you can click on the user and there is a Moderate option to report to board moderator.
[11:28:38] <mozmck> I don't know if it can be set up for moderators to delete or ban other users.
[11:37:26] <cncbasher> i'll try it next time round , don't think it will be long before we get more
[11:37:36] <cradek> :-(
[11:47:42] <jepler> there will be more
[11:48:22] <mozmck> they seem to come in waves.
[11:49:12] <jepler> fwiw joomla docs recommend deactivation over deletion, and give the e-mail address reuse reason
[11:50:18] <mozmck> On one board I help administer we set all new users to have the first 3 posts moderated. We catch pretty much all spammers that way. But if lots of new users are signing up that could be too much extra work.
[11:50:34] <jepler> mozmck: I think we can make a similar setting, and I would not mind trying it
[11:50:49] <mozmck> Yes, I just saw the setting a minute ago.
[11:50:59] <mozmck> You want me to set it to 1 post?
[11:52:07] <jepler> cncbasher: if you go to a user profile, under the "moderate" tab, do you have "ban profile"? (not sure, seems like this is a different thing than "delete" and "deactivate" user?!)
[11:52:59] <jepler> mozmck: do you know what "ban profile" is compared to delete/deactivate user?
[11:53:12] <mozmck> I saw that "ban profile", but it looks like it just makes the user profile invisible.
[11:53:17] <jepler> OK, hm
[11:55:25] <mozmck> jepler: the setting is "Moderate New Users" in Kunena Forum->Configuration.
[11:55:39] <jepler> yes, "ban profile" doesn't do anything to remove posting rights
[11:58:23] <jepler> bbl
[12:52:59] <cncbasher> i dont mind helping administrating if it helps lower the burden
[20:41:12] <andypugh> The username scares me. Not sure about the content. http://forum.linuxcnc.org/forum/31-cad-cam/30028-programming-for-cnc-router
[20:53:25] <jepler> I deleted a post by this user once before, and thought I'd disabled the account
[20:53:30] <jepler> it's clearly just spam
[20:53:53] <jepler> but I think the name is weird just because it's Thai (?)
[20:55:07] <jepler> I disabled the account
[21:00:12] <andypugh> It’s like relevant non-evil spam. If he posted any words at all, we would see it differently
[21:06:57] <andypugh> He posted another.
[21:08:04] <andypugh> It’s CNC. I don’t get his point, but I _think_ he/she looks legit
[21:08:56] <andypugh> But I can’t reply to the thread because the user is blocked
[21:09:07] <jepler> the URL shown at the bottom of the videos leads to a "blog" that is full of stolen text
[21:09:28] <jepler> one bit was clearly from wikipedia right down to the "[ edit ]" link text being copied..
[21:10:19] <jepler> posting context-free videos that are ultimately to link to a website full of unoriginal text and presumably ads is essentially spamming
[21:10:23] <andypugh> OK, this might be me not understanding humans again.
[21:12:49] <jepler> you know me well enough to doubt I understand humans either
[21:18:46] <andypugh> We need someone on the normal part of thr Specrum as a contractor/
[21:21:34] <andypugh> I see many spams where I find myself wondeiring how, if I was reallly stupid, I could give the spammer money
[21:22:21] <andypugh> Or, even, If I was really intellligent, how I could work out who to give money to.
[22:06:21] <mozmck> I've heard that some of the ad stuff works by hitcounts, so just going to a site can generate income for them.
[22:20:36] <andypugh> Many have no link at all. Some are spoofed so welll you just reply to someone you know. Totally inexplicapbel.
