Back
[09:55:10] <cradek> seb_kuzminsky: mine booted, but the screen blinks on and off, which the original kernel didn't (but neither one of them has correct video/resolution)
[09:56:01] <cradek> I fear a setup that doesn't use initrd, because surely at least dkms is broken
[09:58:40] <cradek> if I check the "make my MP3s work" checkbutton in the xubuntu installer, it gives me that nvidia driver
[10:00:26] <skunkworks> Really? is that the 'install 3rd party softare' check box?
[10:00:35] <skunkworks> I don't know if I have had that happen.
[10:01:34] <cradek> I don't remember exactly what it said - something about allowing closed source with unknown weird licenses in order to get your MP3s to work
[10:02:26] <cradek> can't find a picture of it
[10:02:51] <cradek> http://static.howtoforge.com/images/perfect_desktop_xubuntu_12.04/3.jpg
[10:03:06] <cradek> ah you're right, it does say third-party
[10:03:13] <cradek> the MP3 thing is right below it
[10:03:21] <skunkworks> right
[10:03:40] <skunkworks> I think I have almsot always checked that.
[10:04:10] <cradek> my particular machine worked slightly better without it (but video was still wrong and I never did fix it)
[10:04:24] <cradek> without the checkbox I got 1280x1024 and with it I got 640x480, both are wrong
[10:05:23] <cradek> the bootup screen (where they show you a graphic instead of the console messages) has not worked on either machine I tried (one is quite modern) - it just displays a few lines of blue crap that aren't synced
[10:05:57] <cradek> ubuntu just seems more and more broken to me
[10:09:04] <cradek> debian 7 is nice
[10:35:21] <seb_kuzminsky> i have other friends who prefer debian over ubuntu, and some who prefer mint over ubuntu
[10:35:54] <mozmck> I just installed mint and it is nice.
[10:37:53] <mozmck> I want to stay a little more up-to-date on some programs than debian stable, but debian testing can tend to change *too* much - at least it used to.
[10:39:03] <mozmck> Anyone tried SolydXK? debian (testing I think) based but they just give you monthly "update packs". Looks interesting.
[10:39:12] <cradek> mint is a fine successor to gnome2 but I have encountered several problems with it due to clueless packaging and/or renaming
[10:39:31] <cradek> they are fighting to get it in debian and debian is telling them to clean up their packages, so I bet it will improve
[10:40:45] <mozmck> Maybe you mean MATE as a successor to gnome2?
[10:40:57] <cradek> yes mint+MATE
[10:41:01] <mozmck> I'm using Cinnamon desktop and like it pretty well.
[10:41:19] <cradek> I meant they (the mint people?) are trying to get MATE into debian
[10:41:30] <cradek> I haven't tried that one
[10:41:33] <mozmck> haven't tried MATE, but I like XFCE pretty well.
[10:41:47] <jepler> fwiw I've set up XFCE as the desktop on my last 3 systems
[10:42:04] <cradek> I think my weapon of choice is xfce now, because although it doesn't quite have the features of gnome2, it has some years on it and seems free of terrible ideas
[10:42:26] <mozmck> Cinnamon is mostly a little slicker looking than XFCE, but there are some nice features of the file manager that I like better than in xfce.
[10:42:54] <cradek> I totally don't care about slick looks
[10:43:22] <mozmck> yes, xfce is good. I noticed the newest version also has a search bar in the main menu, which I've found to be pretty handy in cinnamon.
[10:43:22] <cradek> I want rectangular windows with functional decorations
[10:44:30] <cradek> the default xubuntu desktop theme had one-pixel window corners that you have to grab to resize. that's unusable.
[10:44:36] <mozmck> I don't mind it looking better, but it's the functionality I'm interested in - along with the ability to change things easily.
[10:46:24] <cradek> anymore I just try to choose the distribution and desktop that's had the least harm done to it so far - and that makes me sad
[10:47:38] <mozmck> yes. I may try solydxk (XFCE version) for my next install. I really don't care if it won't run on someones cell phone - or smart watch.
[10:48:02] <memleak> gnome 2 still the default in gentoo :)
[10:48:52] <mozmck> :) I really like debian based systems, but gentoo and arch do look interesting.
[10:49:27] <memleak> i used to be an archlinux dev, i had to stop using it because it was too unstable.
[10:49:32] <mozmck> I don't want to have to spend lots of time on the system though, because I don't have that time. I need something I can be done with and using in a few hours.
[10:49:44] <jepler> mozmck: agree
[10:49:47] <mozmck> interesting. that's what I want to avoid.
[10:49:50] <memleak> as soon as a new version of anything comes out, they package it, regardless of stability.
[10:50:13] <memleak> the day gcc 4.8 comes out is the day arch makes it the default.
[10:50:13] <cradek> I had never really used basic debian before, but was surprised recently to find that it was a fine and usable system with no harm done to it
[10:51:14] <mozmck> I started with debian in about '98, and ran testing because stable was too behind (like didn't support my hardware and other things).
[10:52:56] <memleak> arch is simply too new. if you dont constantly update it, you'll either be stuck with a broken system and hundreds of package conflicts that would take hours to repair, or you'd get lucky and find a time to update and get lucky enough which will last you awhile, but the package manager wont know what to do because it hasnt been updated in a few weeks.
[10:53:39] <mozmck> Switched to ubuntu because it worked better out of the box (at the time) than debian, and was updated reasonably often while still being stable. That has changed over the last couple years now, and I'm probably on my last ubuntu now.
[10:54:07] <memleak> arch is more of a war between the world's lastest linux utilities and libraries with absolutely no concept of anything else except version numbers
[10:54:51] <cradek> ubuntu 6-8-10 were all really good systems. it's going off the rails now.
[10:54:53] <memleak> gentoo is the most stable distribution out there, at least for me
[10:55:00] <mozmck> memleak: that's kind of the problem I had with debian unstable and testing, but probably not nearly as bad.
[10:55:20] <jepler> I've been using debian testing on my laptop and it hasn't bitten me too hard yet
[10:55:30] <jepler> servers get stable. linuxcnc would get stable.
[10:55:55] <mozmck> ubuntu 10 was good, 9 was not! a number of things that had worked in 8 quit in 9, and got a little better in 10.
[10:56:09] <cradek> I've only ever used the LTSes
[10:56:53] <mozmck> jepler: I didn't have too much trouble with testing. I think I had a couple of times X wouldn't start after an update, and there would be some package conflicts, but that has been a while back now.
[10:56:53] <memleak> the only bugs i hear about with debian unstable is how in the past 10 years something kept crashing 3 times
[10:57:12] <mozmck> yes, it was not bad.
[10:57:37] <memleak> im always like.. THREE TIMES? NO WAI!
[10:59:08] <mozmck> I had more than that. I would tell my wife that I had updated again, and she would always ask "now the computer won't boot?", or "what's broken now?"
[10:59:51] <mozmck> But it was not too bad. Not a single re-install but just incremental updates for about 10 years

[11:00:57] <dgarr> do i need to do anything else to get a deb built (for precise) for this test branch?
[11:01:30] <cradek> nope, it'll build all of them
[11:01:43] <dgarr> great -- thanks cradek and jepler
[11:02:10] <cradek> I think it'll end up here:

[11:03:47] <cradek> oops

[11:05:03] <cradek> linuxcnc-build: sorry I keep doing that to you
[11:05:42] <jepler> I think I encountered a problem using "/" in branch names, because it's a forbidden character in package version numbers
[11:05:55] <jepler> if buildbot eventually complains then push again with a branch name like dgarr-testSHARE instead
[11:06:03] * jepler is not sure he has the details right
[11:06:07] <cradek> jepler: see

[13:17:41] <kwallace2> Gedit doesn't highlight .ngc files very well for me. The sample on the wiki page looks nice but the .lang file there doesn't produce the same effect on my setup. Does anyone know off-hand what might be wrong?
[13:21:57] <andypugh> There is a much better .lang file at cnc-club.ru

[13:32:52] <kwallace2> andypugh: Thank you.
[13:33:43] <andypugh> I think the problem is that the underlying format for .lang files changed at some point. (though this is at bese a vague recollection)
[13:35:01] <kwallace2> I guess the wiki page is broken :(
[13:42:20] <cradek> wiki is working for me

[13:56:28] <dgarr> assistance/guidance appreciated
[13:56:47] <kwallace2> cradek: Sorry, I meant the Gedit wiki page is out of date and the .lang file there doesn't work anymore. I looks like MAH did some work on a .lang file but it looks like it's part of the document system, maybe.

[20:34:28] <dgarr> ? dpkg-buildpackage: error: fakeroot debian/rules binary gave error exit status 2
[20:59:08] <seb_kuzminsky> dgarr: the important part of the error message is:
[20:59:10] <seb_kuzminsky> Files exist in debian/tmp, but should not:
[20:59:10] <seb_kuzminsky> debian/tmp/usr/share/doc/linuxcnc/examples/sample-configs/maintainer.txt
[21:00:14] <seb_kuzminsky> that means a new file is installed, but not mentioned in debian/linuxcnc.files.in, which tells the debian packaging system what files to *expect*
[21:00:25] <seb_kuzminsky> so add it to debian/linuxcnc.files.in
[21:04:44] <dgarr> so: i added the file: configs/maintainer.txt, and the new line for linuxcnc.in should be: usr/share/doc/linuxcnc/examples/sample-configs/maintainer.txt
[21:04:46] <dgarr> ?
[21:36:20] <seb_kuzminsky> sounds right
[21:36:52] <dgarr> thanks, i 'll try that
[21:36:55] <seb_kuzminsky> you can try building the debian package on your own machine by running 'fakeroot debian/rules binary'
[21:37:05] <seb_kuzminsky> if it works, push it
[21:37:22] <KGB-linuxcnc> 03Dewey Garrett 05dgarr/config-cleanup 6e2226a 06linuxcnc 10debian/linuxcnc.files.in rearrange: add maintainer.txt to linuxcnc.files.in * 14http://git.linuxcnc.org/?p=linuxcnc.git;a=commitdiff;h=6e2226a
[21:37:32] <seb_kuzminsky> or just push it ;-)
[21:38:26] <dgarr> i dont have all the packages to make docs
