[14:28:37] <andypugh> pcw_home: It sounds to me like prescale shouldn't be a pin, it should be calculated by the driver, on the basis of the requested frequency?
[15:50:28] <seb_kuzminsky> probotix: hi, are you len shelton?
[17:05:45] <CaptHindsight> seb_kuzminsky: interesting comment on the ML about making a unified EPP driver
[17:07:43] <andypugh> I think he was using the "Royal We" meaning, "not me" :)
[17:08:02] <andypugh> But I could be wrong.
[17:08:11] <CaptHindsight> it's a good idea
[17:08:17] <andypugh> I think he has enough on his plate with 2.6
[17:09:00] <CaptHindsight> maybe something to cover a generic parallel interface to Linuxcnc
[17:09:09] <andypugh> It is one of many good ideas. But there are always more ideas than developers.
[17:09:46] <CaptHindsight> new SOC's like the BBB have generic IO that may be used like a EPP port
[17:10:25] <andypugh> (And, frankly, it might be much easier to set up a fast serial link on just 2 of the pins of both the BBB and the 7i43. Those 7i43 pins are just GPIO to the FPGA anyway.
[17:11:11] <CaptHindsight> pcw looked at the SPI on the BBB
[17:11:33] <CaptHindsight> IIRC the BBB SPI is only 50MHz
[17:12:09] <CaptHindsight> some of the other interesting ARM soc's have SPI up to 100MHz
[17:13:23] <CaptHindsight> his comment just got me thinking of what to do a bit down the road, not that he should do the work
[17:14:05] <seb_kuzminsky> heh
[17:14:11] <seb_kuzminsky> where's my army of grad students?
[17:14:29] <CaptHindsight> do you speak Mandarin?
[17:14:33] <andypugh> Didn't CaptHindsight Have an army of devs at his beck and call?
[17:14:47] <jepler> 50MHz SPI ought to be fine where EPP is; EPP tops out somewhere south of 3MB/s (24Mbit/s), doesn't it?
[17:15:00] <seb_kuzminsky> i need to teach *my* kids to code so i can start assigning them bugs
[17:15:30] <seb_kuzminsky> i agree that spi is probably better than epp now in the 21st century
[17:15:44] <seb_kuzminsky> i've never seen epp go faster than 1 MB/s, but maybe i have crufty hardware
[17:16:27] <CaptHindsight> response time over SPI might be an issue with some controllers
[17:16:42] <andypugh> PCW has a bunch of serial drivers (SPI, SSI, UART...) all it would take is putting one on the input side.
[17:16:52] <CaptHindsight> we'll find out soon enough
[17:17:30] <andypugh> 7i90HD is _already_ EPP or SPI
[17:17:54] <andypugh> Why would you bother with EPP if you have onboard SPI on your BBB?
[17:18:15] <CaptHindsight> he has a proto FPGA over SPI to the Allwinner A20 (dual arm cortex a9)
[17:18:49] <andypugh> CaptHindsight: This would be a dedicated link, and it is hard to imagine it being _more_ random than EPP
[17:20:29] <CaptHindsight> just thinking out loud for now, trying to get to this later this fall
[17:20:53] <seb_kuzminsky> andypugh: and yes, i'm far enough behind in my 2.6 duties that i'm not volunteering for any more work right now ;-)
[17:21:41] <andypugh> Have you seen Probamo's splash screens?
[17:22:04] <andypugh> ('cos users seem to care most about bling)
[17:22:44] <andypugh> I think he over-uses his own personal logo on them, but he does seem to be volunteering.
[17:22:52] <CaptHindsight> right now I'm playing with the 3x20's, going to see how many will work out well in one motherboard
[17:23:11] <andypugh> That's PICIe?
[17:23:23] <CaptHindsight> yeah
[17:23:33] <andypugh> Can you bridge Mini-PCIe to cabled PCI-e?
[17:23:35] <CaptHindsight> I need lots of IO
[17:23:52] <CaptHindsight> yes
[17:24:38] <andypugh> Someone on the forum wanted to use an Intel NUC (I can see the attraction) but all it has are internal Mini-PCIe, or possibly ethernet)
[17:25:05] <CaptHindsight> wish they had some DDR on board
[17:26:03] <seb_kuzminsky> i saw the splash screens on the forum that you pointed me at the other day
[17:26:19] <CaptHindsight> using GB nics and 7i80-ish boards might be ok as well
[17:26:20] <andypugh> You don't have to say what you think :-)
[17:26:37] <seb_kuzminsky> i'm glad to have someone step up and do that, but i personally found them a bit busy-looking - i'd much prefer a simple clean look
[17:26:47] <seb_kuzminsky> but that's just me, and what do i know about style?
[17:29:49] <andypugh> I rather feel that if you said "I find them a bit busy-looking, but the next release will need a new splash-screen" then he would beaver away on command :-)
[17:30:36] <andypugh> I actually rather like the current one. It's pleasantly under-stated but attractive
[17:31:02] <seb_kuzminsky> it's simple and not busy-looking, and clearly conveys what's making the splash :-)
[17:32:01] <andypugh> Interesting that Apple have gone away from skeuomorphic 3D to flat colours in the latest IOs.
[17:34:31] <andypugh> I guess that there is a generation coming up that don't actually _recognise_ knobs and buttons.
[17:35:36] <seb_kuzminsky> the current splash image (http://git.linuxcnc.org/gitweb?p=linuxcnc.git;a=blob;f=linuxcnc.gif;h=79d9460884be65eb26e118131b54a9bd66a9157c;hb=d87f08b76ef497f9042030e7b8a5784d9e1ce18d) has the advantage that it matches the image we use all over
[17:35:42] <seb_kuzminsky> in the docs, on the website, etc
[17:35:58] <seb_kuzminsky> if we're going to change one of them, we should probably change them all
[17:37:23] <andypugh> I would like a version of that holding a lathe tool :-)
[17:37:44] <seb_kuzminsky> and a glue gun in the third hand :-)
[17:38:08] <andypugh> And a genetic sequencer in the 4th?
[17:38:40] <seb_kuzminsky> i must be missing something
[17:39:21] <andypugh> I can see LinuxCNC being ideal for controlling lab equipment.
[17:39:40] <seb_kuzminsky> oh! yeah
[17:39:52] <andypugh> (which would be handy for building many-armed penguins)
[17:41:47] <CaptHindsight> http://imagebin.org/273427 found this
[17:43:26] <CaptHindsight> lab equipment and even some process controls
[17:44:19] <CaptHindsight> on the other hand then it gets to far from controlling cutting tools and the UI's might have little in common
[17:44:29] <seb_kuzminsky> CaptHindsight: that should be our new splash screen
[17:44:32] <andypugh> Reminds me of; https://union.ic.ac.uk/rcc/rcsmotor/wp-content/uploads/manual-cover.png
[17:45:27] <andypugh> Eeeh! them were the days. I drew that with a pen, from memory.
[17:46:04] <andypugh> Which is why it is a bit wonky and some bits don't fit :-)
[17:46:17] <CaptHindsight> does that have the engine that was out of balance by several pounds?
[17:46:25] <andypugh> That's the one
[21:38:30] <cradek> I agree with seb_kuzminsky about "busy"; I like some of the ideas like the better-rendered tools, but I wish he wasn't the goofy-googly-eyed penguin, and I don't think the fonts should be so loud and attention-grabbing. I'd prefer to see LinuxCNC done as one word, in a font that doesn't say "look at me I'm fancy"
