09:18 AM roguish[m]: looks like they're lined up like a convoy...
12:06 PM Lcvette: morning
01:35 PM Joco[m]: Morning. So anyone seen that from 1-Oct autodesk has finally gotten around to nerfing Fusion for hobby users.
02:42 PM CaptHindsight: just talking about it in #linuxcnc
02:42 PM CaptHindsight: killing lots of features for the free version
02:42 PM CaptHindsight: what did you expect?
03:05 PM Lcvette: i got signed up a while back for $310/yr for the whole shabangabang
03:05 PM Lcvette: kinda glad i did
03:05 PM Lcvette: its pretty reasonable for the features and service
03:05 PM Lcvette: especially commercially
03:05 PM Lcvette: no limits etc\
03:05 PM Lcvette: but for hobby, kinda sucks they are choking you guys into buying a subscription
03:07 PM Lcvette: hopefully solidworks see's this opportunity and launches there own free option, it would be a very smart way to have a mass exodus from autodesk but i think they are soo rooted in their own licensing issues that they will miss the boat here
03:28 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.eaa.org/eaa/news-and-publications/eaa-news-and-aviation-news/news/08-15-2019-SOLIDWORKS-Education-Premium-Now-Free-for-EAA-Members
03:29 PM CaptHindsight: thread on the LCNC mail list about it, $40/mo
03:29 PM CaptHindsight: oh $40/year

03:48 PM TurBoss: hello Lcvette
03:48 PM TurBoss: its new path module starts to do very simple things
03:48 PM Lcvette: but it just isn't updated frequently enough and lags behind current standards
03:48 PM Lcvette: i have it and play with it from time to time
03:48 PM TurBoss: the developmen release is nightly
03:49 PM Lcvette: to check its advances
03:49 PM TurBoss: releases! releases every night!
03:50 PM TurBoss: https://github.com/FreeCAD/FreeCAD/releases/tag/0.19_pre
03:50 PM TurBoss: don't trust the release date
03:50 PM TurBoss: the Assets are updated
03:50 PM Lcvette: but are features and functinality updated?
03:51 PM Lcvette: or just fixes
03:51 PM TurBoss: nono it breaks
03:51 PM TurBoss: big stable releases
03:51 PM TurBoss: are slow
03:53 PM Lcvette: how to install on debian?
03:53 PM Lcvette: maybe i will install on the laptop

04:01 PM Lcvette: how come its not the latest version on sudo apt install?
04:01 PM TurBoss: debian is slow
04:02 PM TurBoss: you can sketch and use data from the sheet
04:02 PM TurBoss: then modify the sheet and the drawing changes
04:02 PM TurBoss: then return some mesurements to the sheet
04:03 PM Lcvette: nice
04:03 PM Lcvette: ok the file is in my downloads folder
04:03 PM Lcvette: how to install it now?
04:03 PM TurBoss: its portable
04:03 PM TurBoss: it just needs permissions to run
04:04 PM Lcvette: i dunno what portable means
04:04 PM TurBoss: it doesn't need to be installed
04:04 PM TurBoss: just like a windows exe that runs
04:04 PM TurBoss: * just like a windows exe that just runs
04:04 PM TurBoss: right click -> properties -> permission
04:04 PM TurBoss: etc.
04:04 PM Lcvette: it is not running properly
04:05 PM Lcvette: i gave permission to run as a program and it tried opening then crashed

04:14 PM TurBoss: the cuttng edje
04:14 PM Lcvette: dunno

04:14 PM Lcvette: did you download?
04:14 PM TurBoss: still
04:14 PM Lcvette: /o\
04:14 PM Lcvette: turboss has dialup
04:15 PM Joco[m]: my son is at university and has an autodesk account. He uses it for Maya and such. He's going to install Inventor and Inventor CAM on my machine. Once he leaves i might lag behind but will still have a working local Invetor install.
04:15 PM TurBoss: https://github.com/FreeCAD/FreeCAD/releases/download/0.18.4/FreeCAD_0.18-16146-Linux-Conda_Py3Qt5_glibc2.12-x86_64.AppImage
04:15 PM TurBoss: Lcvette: this should be useable
04:16 PM TurBoss: nice@joco
04:16 PM Lcvette: Joco: i would not do that
04:16 PM Lcvette: they trace it
04:16 PM Joco[m]: It's the CAM side I really want. And since I plan to add a 4th axis I think Inventor CAM will do better for me than even the current Fusion would
04:17 PM Lcvette: i strongly recommend not screwing around with autodesk or dassault systems software licensing
04:17 PM * TurBoss just forgot that had Freecad up to date
04:17 PM TurBoss: :(
04:18 PM Joco[m]: Or I crack it.
04:18 PM Lcvette: i really would not do that

04:30 PM Lcvette: ver1.8 works
04:30 PM TurBoss: 18 ok!
04:31 PM TurBoss: you can import step igs

04:31 PM TurBoss: lots of them

04:40 PM TurBoss: * https://wiki.freecadweb.org/External_workbenches
04:58 PM Lcvette: TurBoss: i don't see how to do cam stuff in it though
04:59 PM TurBoss: change to the path workbnech
05:00 PM TurBoss: to draw i choose the "Part Design" workbench
05:28 PM Joco[m]: TurBoss: were those images from FreeCAD?
05:29 PM Joco[m]: if so how did you get the tool paths image?
05:31 PM TurBoss: calculate thoose from the path workbench
05:42 PM Joco[m]: wow - crunch. Path workbench blows it out of the water for me
05:43 PM Joco[m]: seg fault
05:58 PM Joco[m]: solved - removed the python3 freecad libs and reverted to python3
05:59 PM Joco[m]: * solved - removed the python3 freecad libs and reverted to python2
06:01 PM TurBoss: great

07:26 PM TurBoss: lol someone is porting the VTK plotter t QtVCP
07:26 PM TurBoss: 😐️
08:54 PM TurBoss: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DCP-DbkbiLA
09:18 PM Joco[m]: had fun with their pixel art
09:25 PM TurBoss: :)
09:33 PM Joco[m]: I'm on the horns of a dilemma. Pay ~1200NZD for 3 yrs or 430NZD for 1 year for full use of all Fusion 360 features. :-/
09:34 PM TurBoss: :-\
10:47 PM Joco[m]: what is not clear is if I get the 40% off now and for subsequent years if I do the pay 1 year at a time model
11:09 PM Joco[m]: cool - adaptive clearance simulated using FreeCAD
11:09 PM * Joco[m] uploaded an image: image.png (78KiB) < https://matrix.org/_matrix/media/r0/download/matrix.org/XNcJRHlEcdZXUvuKEpcDxYLe/image.png >
11:11 PM TurBoss: \o/
11:12 PM TurBoss: did you figured the partdesign workbench?
11:13 PM Joco[m]: mostly. Enough to make a tube from from a scketch. Still got to play a little more. Long way to go before it would replace Fusion. But its doing well.
11:14 PM TurBoss: cool
11:14 PM TurBoss: fusion for cad or cam?
11:14 PM TurBoss: cad in freecad is pretty good imo
11:15 PM TurBoss: cam still new only one year of development
11:15 PM Joco[m]: the CAD side looks pretty good. Agreed. The CAM is where it needs to grow.
11:16 PM Joco[m]: Another 2 yrs of focus in that space and I reckon as a hobby user I would be looking seriously at FreeCAD
11:16 PM TurBoss: then fusion 360 becomes free again
11:16 PM TurBoss: lol
11:16 PM Joco[m]: lol - maybe. I suspect Autodesk are a bit arrogant for that
11:17 PM Joco[m]: for pro users a long term committment to Fusion probably makes sense.
11:17 PM TurBoss: when I need pro cam
11:17 PM TurBoss: i do cimatron
11:17 PM TurBoss: 😲
11:18 PM TurBoss: sad
11:18 PM Joco[m]: cimatron?
11:18 PM TurBoss: wan't some
11:18 PM TurBoss: ?
11:18 PM TurBoss: its a very powrfull CAD/CAM for moulds but it does all
11:18 PM TurBoss: now is 3dsystems
11:19 PM TurBoss: I only managed to run e11
11:20 PM TurBoss: all others are very well protected
11:24 PM Joco[m]: I've reconciled myself for paying for Fusion, at least for a while. I really want to be able to build out a 4th axis on the mill and experiment with and use it. Plus the CAM is really easy to use.
11:25 PM Joco[m]: Fusion paid for will give me that. Once I can see FreeCAD has 4th axis support then I think it could take over from Fusion for me.
