05:22 AM Joco[m]: morning JT
05:47 AM * JT-Cave went hunting this morning but came back without killing any tobacco hornworms
05:56 AM hazzy-m: Morning
05:58 AM JT-Cave: morning
06:03 AM Joco[m]: I did a test grind on my surface grinder after work today. I was trying to see where things had landed after shimming the chuck and checking it's level with a DTI. I have not yet dusted the chuck with the grinder so there still some level of variation. I'm not grinding the table or the base of the chuck as I plan to recondition the machine within the next 12 months. So not wanting to do anything destructive. Anyway ...
06:03 AM Joco[m]: here's the results of the test
06:03 AM * Joco[m] uploaded an image: ima_1af89f2.jpeg (292KiB) < https://matrix.org/_matrix/media/r0/download/matrix.org/CbUzCezEbPoeusOQwjvBBvhb/ima_1af89f2.jpeg >
06:04 AM hazzy-m: That's pretty darn good!
06:05 AM Joco[m]: once I dust the chuck it should be better. But at the moment, given what I have done, I'm pretty pleased.
06:05 AM JT-Cave: nice finish
06:05 AM Joco[m]: This manual grinding lark is a bit like rubbing your stomach and patting your head at the same time.
06:05 AM JT-Cave: possibly the magnet has pulled a thin piece a bit...
06:06 AM Joco[m]: JT-Cave: its mild steel so using an A46J wheel
06:06 AM JT-Cave: yea, I did that for a few years
06:06 AM Joco[m]: seems to be working well
06:07 AM Joco[m]: <JT-Cave "possibly the magnet has pulled a"> I also need to try and put some more shims under the central ribs of the chuck. Just to add some more support on it.
06:08 AM Joco[m]: > <@freenode_JT-Cave:matrix.org> possibly the magnet has pulled a thin piece a bit...
06:08 AM Joco[m]: * I also need to try and put some more shims under the central ribs of the chuck. Just to add some more support on it. But its tricky to do with the chuck being so sodding heavy. It is 6x18". Its a beast
06:09 AM Joco[m]: anyway .. thought I you lads might be a bit interested so thought would share.
06:09 AM Joco[m]: * anyway .. thought you lads might be a bit interested so thought would share.
06:09 AM JT-Cave: yeah it's cool to see
06:10 AM JT-Cave: I would not think the chuck could flex as thick as they are and usually mounted by the ends
06:10 AM Joco[m]: hazzy: when you get a chance to get a new version of QT let me know if it solves the seg fault with the stop/start methods excluded.
06:12 AM Joco[m]: <JT-Cave "I would not think the chuck coul"> Same but I had someone beating me up about it. I'll see how I go. The shims I have on the front are about 150mm long so the two stacks cover 80% of the front edge.
06:13 AM Joco[m]: approx 0.34mm high. Made from soda can aluminium and aluminium foil folded around one
06:14 AM Joco[m]: 4 layers of the foil to get the 0.04mm
06:15 AM Joco[m]: now I need to get my shit sorted and complete all the electrical wiring and the control box.
06:15 AM Joco[m]: but first ... sleeps. 11:15pm and I have work tomorroe.
06:15 AM Joco[m]: * but first ... sleeps. 11:15pm and I have work tomorrow
06:16 AM Joco[m]: so ... nite gents.
06:16 AM JT-Cave: see you tomorrow
