12:01 AM hazzy-m: that's pretty far out :(
12:01 AM hazzy-m: are you going to try and rework the trucite?
12:04 AM Joco[m]: yeah. its a reaplacement job. its a just a pain as I either have to shim the chuck of take the 0.4mm off its base. I am not taking that off the table. But I don't yet know how to scrape. So my plan is to shim the chuck for the time being. I have sandvik scrpaing inserts on order. Will make a holder and order some cast iron rounds to make a couple of straight edge blanks from.
12:05 AM Joco[m]: The use them to learn to scrape from. I'll then improve a couple of angle plates I have to a precision for use on the grinder.
12:06 AM Joco[m]: <hazzy-m "are you going to try and rework "> the existing stuff is starting to peel. So I think it is near time to replace it. I will need to source probably two thicknesses. Thin for V way and thicker for the flat way. It is the flat way which is low.
12:08 AM hazzy-m: sounds like a good project for learning to scrap, not very complicated geometry
12:09 AM * Joco[m] uploaded an image: ima_0677362.jpeg (264KiB) < https://matrix.org/_matrix/media/r0/download/matrix.org/ifszUCJyoRLZgVPxFtUQmvCm/ima_0677362.jpeg >
12:10 AM Joco[m]: this is what I am talking about,.
12:10 AM Joco[m]: And this pic show the delamination starting on the left side
12:10 AM * Joco[m] uploaded an image: ima_3dbb599.jpeg (227KiB) < https://matrix.org/_matrix/media/r0/download/matrix.org/ylfYGiXZAQULYIcpImreggMI/ima_3dbb599.jpeg >
12:11 AM Joco[m]: <hazzy-m "sounds like a good project for l"> yup - agree. But I want to do the basics on some tools that I will need for this project
12:12 AM Joco[m]: so I will need a classic I-beam style straight edge and something like a prisim one so I can print into the V
12:14 AM * TurBoss uploaded an image: 20200823_071332.jpg (154KiB) < https://matrix.org/_matrix/media/r0/download/jauriarts.org/THbsTcppCJfNvfpSuoHDeJYu/20200823_071332.jpg >
12:14 AM Joco[m]: I reckon a single straight edge with a scraped flat bottom and 45 to 50 degree angled face would do the business.
12:14 AM Joco[m]: TurBoss: what's that?
12:14 AM * TurBoss uploaded an image: 20200823_071412.jpg (182KiB) < https://matrix.org/_matrix/media/r0/download/jauriarts.org/NedVcOpnCzpbAWuhPqWsYRZT/20200823_071412.jpg >
12:15 AM hazzy-m: I was expecting the V to be inverted from that. I'd love to get a raw casting and make an I-beam straight edge at some point. That's a decent project on its own
12:15 AM TurBoss: its perfect to swich grinder table direction
12:15 AM TurBoss: a big swich
12:15 AM hazzy-m: that would be perfect!
12:15 AM Joco[m]: electronic switch?
12:16 AM TurBoss: yes it is
12:16 AM TurBoss: it costs 127€ lol
12:17 AM * hazzy-m uploaded a video: view-settings-1.mp4 (265KiB) < https://matrix.org/_matrix/media/r0/download/matrix.org/akZZMxShfcmeWaCZmOFImGxv/view-settings-1.mp4 >
12:17 AM hazzy-m: everything stays synced! Hurray
12:18 AM TurBoss: 🥳
12:18 AM Joco[m]: <TurBoss "it costs 127€ lol"> not the ceapest under the sun
12:19 AM TurBoss: Joco: I cant toggle it with one hand but it changes the motor direction
12:19 AM TurBoss: I mean to take a vid
12:20 AM Joco[m]: <hazzy-m "I was expecting the V to be inve"> I'm not going to be able to source a casting. The cost of getting foundry work done here is eye watering. I'll probably have to do some kind of fabed/welded/screwed system using a steel web.
12:21 AM * TurBoss uploaded an image: image.png (42KiB) < https://matrix.org/_matrix/media/r0/download/jauriarts.org/bBeVBovnUaYkLRyDKKukTOzo/image.png >
12:21 AM TurBoss: as the table moves the switch toggles
12:22 AM TurBoss: it moves 90º
12:22 AM Joco[m]: hazzy: there is a guy on youtube who constructed an all steel I beam straight edge and scraped it in. He has an interesting video on the geometry needs of the scraping edge for steel
12:22 AM Joco[m]: TurBoss: its nice kit,.

09:16 AM hazzy-m: This is what Aaron D has been working on, awesome!
09:18 AM JT-Cave: awesome
09:46 AM TurBoss: nice!
09:47 AM TurBoss: is QML or Qt Widgets?
09:50 AM hazzy-m: I think it's just widgets
09:56 AM TurBoss: hazzy: managed to compile but it fails on find local files maybe because __file__
09:56 AM TurBoss: like ui , yml, etc...
09:57 AM hazzy-m: hmmm
09:57 AM hazzy-m: I wonder how we can get around that
09:57 AM hazzy-m: most files are relative
09:58 AM TurBoss: its fun to see the code begin compiled
09:58 AM TurBoss: :P
09:58 AM hazzy-m: would be be possible to have a fixed install location and replace file with a path variable when compiling?
09:58 AM TurBoss: yes
09:58 AM TurBoss: if file is not in somewhere file is what i want
10:00 AM TurBoss: been doing this

10:29 AM hazzy-m: the default template does not get included with the compiled source ..
10:30 AM hazzy-m: hmmm
10:30 AM TurBoss: it doesn't?¿
10:30 AM TurBoss: maybe is trying to locate it in the wrong path

10:31 AM hazzy-m: did you patch that file?
10:31 AM hazzy-m: that's in the init.py
10:32 AM TurBoss: wich file is that
10:32 AM hazzy-m: qtpyvcp/init/py
10:32 AM TurBoss: yes i did
10:32 AM TurBoss: anyway...
10:33 AM TurBoss: is this a interesting feature to continue spending time? lol
10:33 AM TurBoss: i think it could be great atleast get it boot
10:33 AM TurBoss: to compare
10:39 AM hazzy-m: I'm not sure I completely understand what it does
10:39 AM hazzy-m: compile so we don't need python runtime?
10:39 AM TurBoss: it translates python to c the compiles it
10:40 AM TurBoss: :/
10:40 AM TurBoss: * it translates python to c then compiles it
10:40 AM hazzy-m: so we could create binaries?
10:40 AM hazzy-m: that could be good for embedded systems

10:41 AM TurBoss: for SBC
10:42 AM TurBoss: it should run at binary speed
10:42 AM TurBoss: not interpreter
10:42 AM hazzy-m: nice!

07:29 PM Joco[m]: oh yeah! Now that I know the surface grinder carriage is not rising up but that the table is just at a slant front to back (geometry issue in the turcite on the table ways - perhaps from age/wear) I have shimmed the chuck to compensate.

07:30 PM Joco[m]: that's more like it. I think a light dusting and this will be as flat as a flat thing.
07:31 PM Joco[m]: those a in mm's with largest erros being 0.04mm on the left of the chuck. A few 0.02mms then a bunch of 0.01's and a few 0.005's and 0.002s
07:33 PM hazzy-m: Joco: that does not look bad 'tall!
07:34 PM Joco[m]: hazzy: that's what I thought. The chuck has a few dings so it does need a dusting. very litte to take off really to get it nice and flat.
07:35 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: Nice setup! I'm hoping the turcite on my mill is still good enough to keep using as is.. its starting to delaminate also..
07:35 PM Joco[m]: I'll remap it once its fully clamped and the mag is engaged. Just to see how much it moves.
07:36 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: What will you be using the magnetic chuck for? is that a grinding machine or mill?
07:36 PM Joco[m]: hilo90mhz: I had a hard think about it last night and while the geometry error annoys me from a functional point of view so long as it's consistent it actually doesn't matter
07:37 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: Yup! i'm hoping mine is consistent too..

07:38 PM Joco[m]: my little baby
07:38 PM Joco[m]: Ingar RT618
07:39 PM Joco[m]: it's essentially a Boyer Schultz 618
07:40 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: Awesome! I would like to have a grinder like that someday.
07:41 PM Joco[m]: I got lucky and found it auction for an old guys workshop he was selling off cose his eyes wouldn't cut it anymore
07:41 PM Joco[m]: cost me $2250 NZD
07:42 PM Joco[m]: which for this sized machine in NZ is pretty good. you can get cheaper grinders but they are all large ex jobshop. So will NEVER fit into a home garage style workshop.
07:43 PM Joco[m]: I still had my xmas bonus burning a hole in my pocket so ... MINE
07:44 PM Joco[m]: not shown in pick is the flood coolant setup
07:45 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: Nice! I'm on an even smaller island - Hawaii so hard to find stuff locally.. I got really lucky on my Fadal 4020 mill and Haas SL30 Lathe were actually on the Big Island here so saved me tons on shipping..
07:45 PM Joco[m]: nice
07:45 PM Joco[m]: have seen a couple of things like that down here. But around $24k NZD
07:46 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: I got these for scrap value as they area old and almost scrap ;) lol would cost more to ship them to/from the mainland US than I paid for them
07:47 PM Joco[m]: if you have the space and tenacity to work on them then probably great fun projects
07:47 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: yeah, have a 40x80' workshop with bridge crane
07:47 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: bridge crane is only 5 ton though so cant lift these...
07:47 PM Joco[m]: ahhh .. in my day dreams
07:48 PM Joco[m]: I have a double garage
07:48 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: its mostly full of my fathers car parts and wood working shop, had to carve out a section to fit these
07:49 PM Joco[m]: lol - corve out ... get it
07:49 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: haha
07:50 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: I want to get down the NZ sometime though - NZ and AUS are the next travel destinations
07:51 PM Joco[m]: both very different and interesting

07:53 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: Joco: Yeah, probably two separate trips as they are both large places..
07:54 PM Joco[m]: Australia is about the size of the USA. Just much less people. NZ is phisically a similar land size to the UK. Again with way less people
07:55 PM Joco[m]: Looks like you need to do a dang good clean. Then see what you have.
07:55 PM Joco[m]: Assume the mating ways for this are scraped/flacked?
07:55 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: Yeah - that picture was prior to cleaning, its clean now.. Not pretty ;) but does still have fairly deep milled oil grooves
07:56 PM Joco[m]: thats a plus.
07:56 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: Unfortunately both X And Y ways have no flaking visible and the X is pretty badly grooved from i dont really know what.. maybe metal chips embedded in the turcite.
07:56 PM Joco[m]: Mine a quite shallow which has me wondering if the front flat ways have just worn down.
07:57 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: And electronics still acting up so I cant properly test it yet etc.. And now planning to convert to LinuxCNC so dont want to spend that much effort getting 30 year old electronics working
07:57 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: Yeah yours look like it was hand scraped triangular groove? so many never that deep
07:58 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: Just to rebuild this machine + ways you need a large mill larger than this one like a 20x60 I think there may be a few on the island but not many..
07:59 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: to rebuild the turcite + grind the ways I mean
07:59 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: I dont think anyone does it by hand starting from the condition its currently in
08:09 PM Joco[m]: you might surprised. Okuma hand work some of their large gear straight from castings because they are too large or unwieldy to get on a mill
08:10 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: hmm interesting
08:10 PM Joco[m]: For some of those a mill might not the answer. A planner probably would be
08:10 PM Joco[m]: I think you challenge will be having something to act as a straight edge reference.
08:11 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: yeah... I have a 24 or 36" straight edge (I forget which) but nothing longer..
08:11 PM Joco[m]: I have nothing.
08:12 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: Just bought a 18x12x3 granite surface plate on amazon
08:12 PM Joco[m]: I’m investigating how make a 300-400mm long reference but need to be able to make one around 700mm for the table ways.
08:13 PM Joco[m]: I have a slight larger plate. 24x18
08:13 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: yeah straight reference is important
08:14 PM Joco[m]: My plate is only B grade though. Anything more was silly expensive.
08:14 PM * hilo90mhz[m]1 uploaded an image: surface.jpg (513KiB) < https://matrix.org/_matrix/media/r0/download/matrix.org/SzvUorDlJchDUsagiZQdLPsh/surface.jpg >
08:14 PM Joco[m]: Nice camelback.
08:14 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: my plate looks ridiculous with the straight edge lol!
08:14 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: My father found that at some local auction years ago for nothing.. hes never used it
08:16 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: do you think its possible to get a 40" long way straight with a 24" straight edge?
08:17 PM Joco[m]: I have my doubts. I don’t think it will cover enough. If you have 30” I would think it might be possible as you would be getting enough overlap
08:17 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: Ive learned to lower my expectations lately too ;) theres "rebuilt machine" and then theres "good enough to get the job done" which is what I think this machine will end up as..
08:18 PM Joco[m]: But not my area. You might need to ask some questions online.
08:18 PM Joco[m]: Yup - get it re good enough.
08:18 PM Joco[m]: I’m learning that as well.
08:18 PM hazzy-m: hilo90mhz: nice shop and straight edge!
08:19 PM hazzy-m: looks like a nice Kurt vice too
08:19 PM Joco[m]: My plate gives me 600mm on the diagonal and I’m going to need to do with a 600 or 700 mm fabricated straight edge.
08:19 PM Joco[m]: Such fun.
08:19 PM hazzy-m: My name is Kurt, so I guess it's actually mine ??
08:20 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: Yeah looking forward to using that straight edge.. I bought some .02mm per meter bubble levels and realized the granite block I had before wasnt even flat lol
08:21 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: hazzy: Its actually a cheapo chinese vise from amazon - but I do have a real Kurt vise still in the box too - amazon shipped both here free shipping so that was nice
08:22 PM Joco[m]: soo much to learn. Think I can make the 350mm reference from round cast iron. Can buy that easy. Make that with a flat and a 45-50deg angle face. Put handles in its end and all good. The long one will flex too much. So need to make an I beam based on.
08:22 PM * hilo90mhz[m]1 uploaded an image: level.jpg (530KiB) < https://matrix.org/_matrix/media/r0/download/matrix.org/QGSUjzMNdUgmuVEIKwESgaSJ/level.jpg >
08:23 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: If anyone needs some precision levels these are only $50 on amazon and actually very useful.
08:23 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: Not comparable to the $400 or 800 ones but for what they work
08:23 PM Joco[m]: Using this chap as inspiration: https://youtu.be/YanlyahWDOw
08:24 PM Joco[m]: Interesting. I probably should get one of the box/square ones.
08:25 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: Joco: Cool - I haven't worked at all with cast iron bars yet but sounds like a nice material
08:25 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: wow that one he built is huge!
08:25 PM Joco[m]: Yeah. All steel. Very clever construction as well. Also another video he does on scraping mild steel.
08:26 PM Joco[m]: That’s how I’m going to get my 600-700m reference edge.
08:26 PM Joco[m]: follow in his footsteps
08:26 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: cool - yeah thanks for the link I am watching it
08:26 PM Joco[m]: He Austrian so a bit Germanic.
08:26 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: I doubt I have the tools to make it even though ;)
08:27 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: Mainly the surface plate..
08:27 PM Joco[m]: I can get 600mm on my plates diagonal. I have the TIG and I have the sandvik inserts on order so. Plus I pretty much have all the steel. I have a plasma for the 6mm so can can hand cut out all those shapes.
08:28 PM Joco[m]: If you can get 400mm contact on the plate you might be able to manage a 600mm one.
08:29 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: Yeah 600mm is the size of the straight edge I already have though
08:29 PM Joco[m]: ah. Good point.
08:29 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: I'll just have to get a larger surface plate someday..
08:30 PM * hazzy-m borrows precision box levels from work when he needs them
08:31 PM Joco[m]: > * <@kcjengr:matrix.org> borrows precision box levels from work when he needs them
08:31 PM Joco[m]: that would be nice.
08:31 PM Joco[m]: I work for an IT/Management Consulting business. They have computers but not that type of gear
08:34 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: I design / manufacture / sell electronics / robotics kits for education https://www.easybotics.com/
08:35 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: And do some other consulting stuff on the side
08:35 PM Joco[m]: cool
08:36 PM hazzy-m: hilo90mhz: hey, that's awesome!
08:36 PM Joco[m]: For my sins I tend to run sizeable technology programs or portfolios. For example ran the IT & Corporate Portfolio for an NZ bank for 12 months.
08:37 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: Have more a background in electronics than anything else.. If anyone needs help with electronic design or debugging
08:37 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: Joco: cool - that sounds like serious computing stuff
08:38 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: I wouldn't want the responsibility of running computing for banking ;) ours doesn't have to be nearly that secure
08:38 PM Joco[m]: can be. I did a large gig for the countries worker accident compensation scheme in NZ. It covers every business not matter what the size in the country. Had a team of ~150 people and lasted 2 yrx
08:39 PM hazzy-m: Joco: I didn't know that's what you did. I think hands does something similar on the IT side
08:39 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: wow yeah thats serious!
08:39 PM Joco[m]: I had some fun. At the start of the program I introduced myself as the Grand PooBaa
08:40 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: haha - had to google what that term meant
08:40 PM Joco[m]: probably showing my age
08:41 PM hazzy-m: I had to google it too lol
08:42 PM Joco[m]: kind set the tone that I didn't take myself too seriously. Was a good gig and the teams really got their mojo going
08:44 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: nice! so machining is hobby for you too? I may make $$ with it someday but mainly just always wanted a CNC mill.
08:54 PM Joco[m]: yes hobby. It's my sanity tool
08:55 PM Joco[m]: I used to code a lot but have gotten out of the of it over the years. I used to be a part of the Neverwinter Nights mod scene wayyyy back in the day
08:57 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: Nice, we play games from that era on LAN sometimes, never modded anything though
08:57 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: War3, quake3, UT etc
08:58 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: What carbide inserts did you order for scraping?
09:00 PM Joco[m]: sandvik .. hang on ...
09:02 PM Joco[m]: https://www.sandvik.coromant.com/en-gb/products/Pages/productdetails.aspx?c=620-2525%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20H10
09:03 PM Joco[m]: it comes in 30mm, 25mm and 20mm. I got two of the 25mm as a good mid point.
09:03 PM Joco[m]: means I can use one for cast iron and one for steel
09:03 PM Joco[m]: at least that is the plan'
09:03 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: you still have to custom grind them for scraping? you have a grinder like he does?
09:04 PM Joco[m]: yeah you do. I have a D-bit grinder with diamond wheel
09:04 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: ahh yeah I've looked at those grinders, may get one someday
09:05 PM Joco[m]: I'm also going to get a couple of diamond wheels for the surface grinder.
09:05 PM Joco[m]: I want to try and make some precision flat stones
09:05 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: nice
09:05 PM Joco[m]: well I have flood coolant and what looks to be a chuck I can get flat. :-) so why not :D
09:06 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: Yeah good project to test it all out!
09:07 PM Joco[m]: I have a half baked idea to make and sell a few locally. See what interest I get on the NZ version of eBay
09:07 PM Joco[m]: or CraigsList
09:07 PM Joco[m]: it's called TradeMe
09:07 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: cool - you guys have Facebook marketplace? thats replacing craigslist here lately in popularity and ease of use
09:08 PM Joco[m]: yup - I used it to sell my old lathe
09:08 PM Joco[m]: no fees
09:08 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: Yup same here..
09:08 PM Joco[m]: well there weren't any then. It's really no different to the old newspaper adds
09:09 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: Yeah like craigslist except they started charging for car sales adds lately
09:09 PM Joco[m]: just an electronic way to connect people
09:09 PM Joco[m]: ahhh - looking to monetise it. Mind you if car businesses are using them then I get that
09:09 PM Joco[m]: but for private sales its a bit lame
09:10 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: yeah they must have their reasons.. I use both If I really want to sell something

10:09 PM hazzy-m: guess I should stop procrasticoding and pack
10:33 PM Joco[m]: hazzy: so is the new gcode edit baked into master?
10:34 PM Joco[m]: and yes - go pack lol
10:34 PM hazzy-m: Joco: yes, its in master!
10:34 PM hazzy-m: mostly working well
10:34 PM Joco[m]: sweet. Time for the BIG update as I get my butchered repo back into some sane alignment
10:36 PM hazzy-m: but some testing today revealed a seg fault when loading another file before the previous one had been fully highlighted
10:36 PM hazzy-m: I messed with it for a few hours, but could not find a solution
10:37 PM hazzy-m: It should not occur very often, but definitely not a good situation
10:37 PM Joco[m]: so it's working through the highlighting process and while that is happening you load in a new file
10:37 PM hazzy-m: exactly
10:38 PM Joco[m]: ok - can you put a "processing indicator" and block UI access until done?
10:38 PM hazzy-m: I have it threaded so the highlighting process does not block the main UI, and I think the issue is the thread keeps trying to highlight the previous document, even though it's been destroyed
10:38 PM Joco[m]: have you destroyed the thread?
10:38 PM Joco[m]: the highlighting thread?
10:39 PM Joco[m]: of the document?
10:39 PM Joco[m]: * or the document?
10:40 PM hazzy-m: I can't find a way to end the thread since it's part of the QSyntaxHighlighter and it does not expose much of the internals
10:40 PM Joco[m]: I can have a snoop at the code tonight while pondering life the universe and everything on the couch
10:40 PM hazzy-m: that would be awesome!
10:40 PM Joco[m]: maybe I find something maybe I don
10:40 PM Joco[m]: don't
10:41 PM Joco[m]: but ... "will have a crack Nigel"
10:41 PM * Joco[m] wonders if that reference will be lost on Americans
10:42 PM hazzy-m: I'll push what I have. I've been using blue-control to test since it has a file preview that makes it easy to load files in rapid succession from the file list
10:42 PM Joco[m]: yeah - can do the same on mine
10:42 PM Joco[m]: just need to find something nice and big
10:43 PM hazzy-m: there are some BIG files in the qtpyvcp examples folder I think

11:02 PM hazzy-m: yes, same one I showed the pictures of friday. It usually takes the 1" impact to get the lifting eyes off, but I tried to leave them a little loose when I put them on. Hopefully they won't have tightened up from the weight
11:04 PM hilo90mhz[m]1: cool! do you get to use LinuxCNC for its control?
11:06 PM Joco[m]: hazzy: expect a couple of pull requests on that new master. I can see one bug fix I had in place has not made it in.
11:10 PM hazzy-m: Joco: sure!
11:11 PM Joco[m]: It’s minor I guess. Just at the moment you can only load one custom font.
11:12 PM hazzy-m: I could have sworn that was fixed
11:13 PM hazzy-m: are you sure your loading it right?
11:13 PM Joco[m]: ummm ....
