04:53 AM Joco[m]: TurBoss: did you get that little encoder pot thing working/
04:53 AM Joco[m]: Lcvette: I've been doing tuning cuts for X and Y axis. Seem to be getting good results
05:41 AM Joco[m]: Seem to be getting good results. Test cuts have me hitting dimension within +/- 0.02mm. I'm actually measuring around 0.01mm deviation. But I'll call it 0.02mm. Time will tell if I get that consistently.
05:41 AM luke is now known as Guest55629
05:41 AM Joco[m]: Next will be checks on internal pocket dimensions.
08:34 AM Lcvette: o/
08:34 AM Lcvette: hello, how is the potentiometer working turboss?
08:34 AM Lcvette: did you find a specific issue joco?
09:35 AM Lcvette: TurBoss: you need potentiometer help?
01:54 PM Joco[m]: <Lcvette "did you find a specific issue jo"> hi. I tightened everything up a lot. Then retuned the travel without load then setup tuned backlash compensation with actual cuts. After sleeping on it I want to check the x axis thrust bearing tension. That might not be snug enough. Still, I know now I can get better dimension targets.
02:41 PM Lcvette: great!
02:43 PM Lcvette: Joco: alot of times backlash can be found at then thrust bearing ends
02:43 PM Lcvette: what is your setup and what bearings are you using there?
02:46 PM Joco[m]: * yeah - was pretty pleased. lol I initially measured with digital calipers. Couldn't believe the results - "what?!? no! It can't be that close" So went and got the mic out.
02:47 PM Joco[m]: just boring old thrust bearings.'
02:47 PM Lcvette: /o\
02:48 PM Joco[m]: I think when adjusted they can't be too bad as Y which I know I tightened up a lot more seems to be much tighter
02:48 PM Lcvette: there is some of your problem
02:48 PM Lcvette: thrust bearings don't do very well at constraining radial play
02:49 PM Joco[m]: yup - but what radial play will there be on these?
02:49 PM Lcvette: swap them out for some B series (40deg Angular contact bearings
02:49 PM Lcvette: the screw
02:49 PM Lcvette: right now you are relying on the coupler and the motor bearings to hold the screw aligned with axis motion
02:50 PM Lcvette: the screw will try and bow when under load and the bearings need to constrain that sideloading motion
02:51 PM Joco[m]: given the length of X screw I would think screw flex will be more an issue
02:51 PM Lcvette: it certainly will be without constraining the ends
02:51 PM Joco[m]: both ends?
02:51 PM Lcvette: deep groove on the floted end
02:52 PM Lcvette: it allows very slight movement, but the driven end should be 100% constrained axially and radially
02:52 PM Lcvette: the floated end is for thermal changes
02:53 PM Joco[m]: ah - not the design I followed and will require some rework to do.
02:53 PM Lcvette: be sure to use AC bearings designated B
02:54 PM Joco[m]: k
02:54 PM Lcvette: there is A, B, C which represents the contact angle
02:55 PM Joco[m]: lol - what you are describing was what I originally planned to do but I got talked out of it.
02:58 PM Lcvette: A= 30 degree, B= 40 degree, C = 15 degree contact angles
02:58 PM Lcvette: radial is th lower contact angle while axial is the higher contact angles
02:59 PM Lcvette: 40 degree gives the best compromise of axial and radial constraint
02:59 PM Lcvette: big machines with high end bearings have 60degree contact angles but those are not offered in smaller sizes
03:00 PM Lcvette: and purchase some shims to place between the bearing faces to allow for preloading
03:00 PM Lcvette: most smaller bearings when installed face to face will not be preloaded properly
03:00 PM Lcvette: if you use a split bore with divider to preload the bearings, the shims are not required
03:01 PM Lcvette: the bearing should fit in the respective bearing pockets with a snug sliding fit
03:29 PM Joco[m]: will need to remake a number of parts to do that.
03:30 PM Joco[m]: more stuff on the to-do list
03:31 PM TurBoss: Hello
03:32 PM Joco[m]: hi ya
04:31 PM Lcvette: TurBoss: o/
04:33 PM Lcvette: Did you get your potentiometer working?
04:35 PM TurBoss: nope
04:36 PM TurBoss: got the swicthes
04:36 PM TurBoss: * got the swicthes working
04:52 PM Joco[m]: Still need the pot/encoder thing ?
04:52 PM TurBoss: yes
04:53 PM TurBoss: :)
04:53 PM Joco[m]: When you guys were taking about it I was trying figure in my head the circuit.
04:54 PM Joco[m]: It the voltage source and where it flowed to
04:54 PM Joco[m]: * ie the voltage source and where it flowed to
04:55 PM TurBoss: it currently works as boolean
04:55 PM TurBoss: it triggers true at some level
04:55 PM TurBoss: so I need to change the mode or something
04:56 PM Joco[m]: You need to change it to single head (I think)
04:56 PM Joco[m]: Jumpers on board
04:56 PM Joco[m]: Or single end
04:56 PM TurBoss: hmmmm
04:56 PM Joco[m]: I did this for my Hall effect speed sensor on BF20
04:56 PM TurBoss: does that change all the port?
04:57 PM Joco[m]: On the 7i77 you can do it by A, B or Index
04:57 PM Joco[m]: * On the 7i76 you can do it by A, B or Index
04:57 PM Joco[m]: Three jumpers.
04:59 PM Joco[m]: So my plan, for my belt conversion is to use the A/B off the servo for speed. And just pass through a scale to deal with gears. But have a single ended sensor for the Index that is triggering off the actual spindle rotation.
04:59 PM Joco[m]: The single ended is TTL ie on/off
05:02 PM Joco[m]: from 7i76 manual:
05:02 PM Joco[m]: ```
05:02 PM Joco[m]: The 7I76s high speed encoder input can be programmed for differential or single ended mode operation. W4, W5 and W6 set the encoder input mode. When W4,W5,and W6 are in the right hand position, the encoder input is mode is differential. When W4,W5, and W6 are in the left hand position, the encoder input mode is single ended or "TTL".
05:03 PM Joco[m]: and annotations I made in manual after asking the question on linuxcnc forums:

05:12 PM Joco[m]: TurBoss: have you tested the encoder with a meter to see how the A, B and gnd link together?
05:12 PM TurBoss: been using this one
05:12 PM TurBoss: nope
05:14 PM TurBoss: >net joint-selected-count <= hm2_5i25.0.encoder.00.count
05:14 PM TurBoss: >should be
05:14 PM TurBoss: >net joint-selected-count <= hm2_5i25.0.7i76.0.0.enc0.count
05:15 PM TurBoss: I cant find that pin on halmetter
05:15 PM TurBoss: do I need to initialize ?
05:16 PM Joco[m]: doubt it. hang on
05:18 PM * Joco[m] sent a long message: < https://matrix.org/_matrix/media/r0/download/matrix.org/OduzojgBUnhoawPSLPxxDMJD >
05:19 PM TurBoss: ok
05:21 PM Joco[m]: and card0:
05:21 PM Joco[m]: ```
05:21 PM Joco[m]: CARD0=hm2_5i25.0
05:30 PM Joco[m]: TurBoss: are you hooking this up to an MPG encoder?
05:30 PM Joco[m]: or the spindle encoder?
05:30 PM TurBoss: mpg
05:31 PM * Joco[m] uploaded an image: image.png (481KB) < https://matrix.org/_matrix/media/r0/download/matrix.org/PDYwOqrVPNeULmHomhNoIyWU >
05:31 PM Joco[m]: I think those jumpers are only relevant to the spindles encoder
05:32 PM Joco[m]: this is 7i76e but its the same for standard 7i76
05:33 PM Joco[m]: well at least I think it is.
05:34 PM Joco[m]: might need one thw guru lads on
05:39 PM Joco[m]: just checked the mesanet site, this pic is ok for 7i76 as well.
05:41 PM Joco[m]: " and two MPG encoder inputs are provided as an option on four field inputs. "
05:47 PM JT[m]: 7i76e is a 7i92 and 7i76e basically
05:48 PM * JT[m] has a stuck bleeder valve on Rusty
05:49 PM Joco[m]: now here is a man who could help. Rusty?
05:49 PM JT[m]: My truck
05:49 PM Joco[m]: ah - didn't sound good for a person. Probably not good for a truck either
05:50 PM JT[m]: If I can get it free I can get replacements
05:51 PM * JT[m] has a sticky valve too
05:54 PM JT[m]: It's weird how the front 2 rusted up but the back 2 are in perfect shape
06:14 PM Joco[m]: lol
07:05 PM TurBoss: sorry lost internet
11:08 PM Joco[m]: TurBoss: any joy on the mpg connection?
11:08 PM TurBoss: nope
11:09 PM TurBoss: I'll take a drawing
11:09 PM TurBoss: based on mesa docs

11:16 PM TurBoss: now i see
11:16 PM TurBoss: tooke me a while
11:16 PM TurBoss: * took me a while
11:16 PM TurBoss: yo said it to me lol
11:16 PM TurBoss: :P
11:17 PM Joco[m]: 4/5 looks like the power source.
11:17 PM Joco[m]: Power/gnd loop
11:17 PM TurBoss: yes, mine comes from computer
11:18 PM Joco[m]: 1/2/3 must be quadratic else can’t see how it knows direction.
11:19 PM Joco[m]: What are you using this for? Out of interest.
11:20 PM Joco[m]: Did you see the pic I posted on MPG connection to 7i76?
11:28 PM TurBoss: just ordered a jogwheel :D
11:29 PM TurBoss: I'll take some pics when mobile comes up with batery
11:37 PM CaptHindsight: are you going to hook up a motor to the jog wheel to see how fast you can move it? :)
11:38 PM TurBoss: ni
11:38 PM TurBoss: no
11:38 PM TurBoss: just jog wheel
