06:24 AM polprog: i2c sucks
06:38 AM polprog: unless you are limited to 2 wires, use spi
07:21 AM rue_mohr: well
07:22 AM Tom_L: don't fall in it
07:22 AM rue_mohr: there may be more i2c toys tho
07:22 AM rue_mohr: as far as dac/adc/memory
07:25 AM Tom_L: i2c on pp http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/temp/LM75/PPort_I2C_sch.png
07:26 AM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/temp/LM75/lm75_msop1.jpg
08:19 AM rue_mohr: yea and temp sensors
10:06 AM aandrew: hm? spi for what
10:07 AM aandrew: i2c is much much harder, don't make your own spi peripherals
10:07 AM aandrew: er dont' make your own i2c ones
11:43 AM aandrew: well so far all my ali purchases from last week have cleared customs but they're not in my mailbox yet
11:51 AM Tom_L: the postal workers are playing football with em
11:52 AM aandrew: they'd be pretty shitty footballs, all super light
11:52 AM aandrew: would't even make good hackey sacks
11:53 AM Tom_L: instead of saying 'go long' they say 'go postal'
03:36 PM polprog: Tom_L: thats a neat toy
03:40 PM polprog: i ordered the parts for the new controller PCBs
03:40 PM polprog: damn these dacs are expensive
03:55 PM Tom_L: i had it displaying temp on my website for a while
04:01 PM polprog: neat
04:01 PM Tom_L: http://paste.debian.net/1365732/
04:02 PM Tom_L: i'm sure rue was in on that project too
04:13 PM Tom_L: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lm_sensors
06:01 PM polprog: ok, maybe i2c has its uses
06:01 PM polprog: but thats when it works and you have a neat library for it
06:14 PM Tom_L: it's like when do you use wifi and when do you use bluetooth
06:21 PM polprog: kinda yeah
07:14 PM rue_mohr: the idea is to expand the gizmos for the z80 laptop
07:15 PM rue_mohr: SPI perphs are so easy to make
07:15 PM rue_mohr: but most of the cool toys are i2c
07:23 PM rue_mohr: haha
07:23 PM rue_mohr: I didn't have an email address for the courier dispatch, so I sent it to sales and asked for them to forward it. instead they send me a shipping estimate
07:23 PM Tom_L: i did spi on the rpi4 to one of the mesa cards
07:24 PM rue_mohr: but included the dispatch address
07:24 PM rue_mohr: shipping of the pipes will be $50
07:24 PM Tom_L: not too bad
07:24 PM Tom_L: you gotta be there when it's delivered though
07:24 PM rue_mohr: I need to remember to carefully note all the costs on the tubes so I can get the numbers balanced
07:25 PM Tom_L: melt the slot chips down for recycle
07:25 PM rue_mohr: if I assume the average sprayer is 18" its enough for 66 sprayers
07:25 PM rue_mohr: hah
07:25 PM rue_mohr: I have so much aluminum there really is no point
07:26 PM rue_mohr: I have 3 crates of muffins that were extra from each casting I'v ever done
07:26 PM rue_mohr: cause I'v never had to go back and use any
07:26 PM rue_mohr: and I still have a pile of stuff I have not melted down
07:28 PM Tom_L: mostly hdd?
07:29 PM rue_mohr: lots of , yes
07:29 PM rue_mohr: an extinct resource
07:29 PM Tom_L: my server is still running the original rust
07:30 PM Tom_L: i should shut it down and blow the cob webs out
07:34 PM rue_mohr: heh
07:34 PM rue_mohr: ok I'm still on call
07:34 PM rue_mohr: I have to work out what to do tonight
07:34 PM rue_mohr: today was an interesting day at work
07:34 PM Tom_L: i think i will since i'll not be around for a while
07:35 PM rue_mohr: there is a bathroom with 1 lihght fixture and 1 lamp that burned out
07:35 PM rue_mohr: this bathroom lost a lamp about 2 weeks ago
07:35 PM aandrew: rue_mohr> SPI perphs are so easy to make
07:35 PM rue_mohr: the lamps are LED upgrades that are being done to the building
07:35 PM aandrew: rue_mohr> but most of the cool toys are i2c
07:35 PM aandrew: obviously you need to make a SPI-to-I2C peripheral
07:35 PM aandrew: you know you want to
07:36 PM rue_mohr: last time I just grabbed a lamp from their install stock and replaced it
07:36 PM rue_mohr: but they ran out of materials and paused the project
07:36 PM Tom_L: SC18IS604
07:36 PM rue_mohr: so today I went to grab a lamp and driver (as it looked like the ballast was killing lamps) and they had _NO_ material left
07:37 PM rue_mohr: so, I grabbed another fixture for a swap-out
07:37 PM rue_mohr: SO
07:37 PM rue_mohr: while I was removing the old fiture the CEILING COLLAPSED
07:37 PM rue_mohr: (t-bar)
07:37 PM Tom_L: job security
07:37 PM rue_mohr: I was ok cause I was standing just a bit thru it when it went
07:37 PM aandrew: Tom_L: I was looking at that about a year ago, but that's cheating
07:38 PM Tom_L: too many wires etc on top of it?
07:38 PM rue_mohr: turns out the main t-bar rails were twisted to hell and had no hangers
07:38 PM aandrew: rue_mohr: wow
07:38 PM rue_mohr: SO
07:38 PM rue_mohr: I'm invested in rebuilding the t-bar
07:38 PM Tom_L: i helped my friend run some stuff from the city building to the apraiser's office and you wouldn't believe how many unused wired are up there
07:39 PM Tom_L: the ran a fiber link between buildings
07:39 PM rue_mohr: as it turns out SOMEONE rivted the vent "into' the t-bar tile, so I had to drill all that part and re-re it
07:39 PM rue_mohr: with a bunch of help I got the t-bar reconstructed and managed to refit the vent
07:39 PM rue_mohr: then I put the light in
07:39 PM rue_mohr: the new light
07:40 PM rue_mohr: and flipped the switch
07:40 PM rue_mohr: ~nothing~
07:40 PM rue_mohr: WTF!
07:40 PM rue_mohr: no power at the fixture
07:40 PM rue_mohr: so I check the switch, power at switch DEAD SWITCH
07:40 PM rue_mohr: changed that, light works, co-workers help finish rebuilding the ceiling
07:41 PM rue_mohr: we have a bit more work tommorrow to finish but
07:41 PM Tom_L: sounds like they need a long overdue renovation
07:41 PM rue_mohr: BUT FAR THE MOST COMPLEX LIGHT BULB CHANGE TO DATE
07:41 PM rue_mohr: it was just a small bathroom, 1 stall, 5'x6' maybe?
07:41 PM Tom_L: so how many canucks does it take to change a light bulb?
07:42 PM rue_mohr: hah
07:42 PM Tom_L: :)
07:42 PM aandrew: Tom_L: haha
07:42 PM rue_mohr: pretty much 7.5 hours, more man-hours cause there was help
07:43 PM rue_mohr: As I go around I been pulling old wire out
07:43 PM Tom_L: it does tend to get in the way afterwhile
07:43 PM rue_mohr: The manager once said if I kept up at that rate I was going there would be no elecrical in the building to maintain
07:44 PM rue_mohr: there is a GREAT piece of 50-pr in the building, #20 with tinned conductors
07:44 PM rue_mohr: I'm working on it ;]
07:45 PM Tom_L: i got a box full of trunk wire from somewhere once
07:45 PM rue_mohr: ah
07:45 PM rue_mohr: plated? greased?
07:45 PM Tom_L: ran a piece from the house to the garage in a conduit for various things
07:45 PM rue_mohr: :]
07:45 PM rue_mohr: 50pr #22 unplated is super common around here, worthless to me
07:46 PM Tom_L: at one point i'd made a door detector i had wired with it
07:46 PM rue_mohr: er #24
07:46 PM rue_mohr: the plated I'm after is 1 size larger, so it must be 22
07:47 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/door_monitor/indicator2.jpg
07:47 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/door_monitor/indicator3.jpg
07:48 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/door_monitor/Door_indicator.png
07:48 PM Tom_L: using magnetic switches
07:48 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/door_monitor/door_body.html
07:49 PM Tom_L: forgot i had a page for it
07:49 PM rue_mohr: :]
07:49 PM Tom_L: i could close/open either one with the switch
07:49 PM rue_mohr: so, they have bicolour leds that are more than just red/green now
07:50 PM rue_mohr: you can get any RGB combo, without even RGB leds
07:50 PM rue_mohr: thought that was funny
07:50 PM rue_mohr: if I dont know what colour I want I get RGB, choose the pin that suits me
07:52 PM Tom_L: T - 7 and counting
07:54 PM Tom_L: is your ..34 number still good? or ..86
