12:31 AM aandrew: same with the different makes/models and order from different sites in different weeks to help spread the mfg time since tehre are only a few vendors
11:47 AM aandrew: I think I went from a dual 80G mirror, few swaps to bigger mirrors, then 3-drive RAID5, then 5, a full swap to an array of 4T raid5 (it's pricey to swap out multiple drives), then added a drive to RAID6, and I think I'm pretty good here for a while unless I suddenly decide to massively increase my plex server or something, which is unlikely
11:52 AM aandrew: I lucked out and found a 12-bay 4U SAS chassis for $50
01:47 PM rue_mohr: does it use software or hardware raid?
01:47 PM rue_mohr: hopefully software, you can recover your data if the hardware dies
01:47 PM rue_mohr: when
03:51 PM rue_shop2: 00:07:E9:04:63:80
06:57 PM aandrew: I always, always use software RAID
06:57 PM aandrew: and yes, for exactly the reason you stated
07:01 PM rue_shop2: :]
07:01 PM rue_shop2: I was at an office that used compaq hardware raid
07:02 PM rue_shop2: they dont monitor the little backup battery for the config, so you never know if its dead
07:02 PM rue_shop2: sometimes, when you reboot, all your data is gone
08:06 PM aandrew: yeah way way early in my RAID at work I asked that same question... "ok, so what happens if the controller fails"? "oh you just replace the controller." "ok, and in 5 years when you guys aren't making it anymore?"
08:07 PM aandrew: you could tell they wanted to say "just buy a few then" but wouldn't, and instead said something about how their new controllers would support the metadata used by older controllers, but that rung kind of hollow too
08:08 PM aandrew: I have never, ever, ever needed to optimize my arrays for speed, so the traditional rules of "use hardware raid" "use the same vendor drive with same firmware" etc all made zero sense
08:12 PM rue_shop2: indeed, I just need safe storage
08:34 PM VanUnamed_ is now known as VanUnamed
08:43 PM aandrew: yep that's what I'm after. duplicity is a great differential backup tool, use whatever you want to store the backups (local or remote, I use mega because it's cheap), everything is encrypted with GPG
08:44 PM aandrew: then syncthing is kind of like RAID but for different comptuers.. my projects directory is kept in sync across three computers so I can move from computer to computer and the data's right there
10:23 PM VanUnamed_ is now known as VanUnamed

11:50 PM rue_mohr: I been technically working on an automatic wire stripper for years
11:50 PM rue_mohr: I made more progress today than I have in a long time
11:50 PM rue_mohr: this is a wire clamp
11:50 PM rue_mohr: to hold it while the rest of the machine pulls the end off
11:52 PM rue_mohr: I made some stripper blades, but I'm not sure how to mount and actuate them
11:56 PM rue_mohr: That thick metal is road sign. Its tempered so I have to anneal it for bending, nice to know that from the heads you made
