06:27 AM VanUnamed_ is now known as VanUnamed
08:21 AM rue_mohr: hoping to get some electronics projects going again soon
08:21 AM rue_mohr: the house is getting cold
08:21 AM rue_mohr: play in the shop for the winter
06:59 PM rue_mohr: Everyone ok, is this just the winter depresion?
07:59 PM Tom_L: not much happenin
07:59 PM rue_mohr: did I show you that sticker?
08:02 PM Tom_L: nope
08:02 PM Tom_L: was looking into my joint following errors a bit
08:02 PM Tom_L: get one every now and then
08:03 PM Tom_L: just trying to figure which setting to adjust to get the best result
08:08 PM Tom_L: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQF4UzLPpr0
08:08 PM Tom_L: Rigol has a new scope out
09:22 PM Tom_L: no sticker pic?
09:28 PM rue_mohr: oh right
09:28 PM rue_mohr: sorry, visitors
09:28 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tempimage/p1290482.jpg
09:31 PM Tom_L: heh
09:33 PM rue_mohr: oh hah, your one of the few that can get that joke :]
09:34 PM rue_mohr: ? I think?
09:35 PM rue_mohr: I'm distracted, stripping down wheelchairs and filling the truck with scrap metal
09:35 PM rue_mohr: hey, would you like one?
09:36 PM rue_mohr: I made them to get the scaling worked out, I'm giving them away
09:36 PM rue_mohr: the idea is to make stickers to replace the scales on meters
09:59 PM rue_mohr: oh
09:59 PM rue_mohr: so
10:00 PM rue_mohr: an interesting things happened today
10:00 PM rue_mohr: one of the guys at work had a project he wanted to weld up
10:00 PM rue_mohr: but hadn't welded before
10:00 PM rue_mohr: he fired up the mig at work and gave it a try
10:00 PM rue_mohr: I came in just after his first test,
10:00 PM rue_mohr: looked awful, but, first weld
10:01 PM rue_mohr: realized he didn't have the sheilding gas on...
10:01 PM rue_mohr: we made some adjustments and I gave it a try to see if the settings seemed ok
10:01 PM rue_mohr: with shielding gas, they can do a nice job...
10:01 PM Tom_L: yup
10:02 PM Tom_L: i had an issue with mine and shielding gas
10:02 PM rue_mohr: the machine doesn't have current control, just voltage
10:02 PM rue_mohr: voltage and wire speed are the only adjusts
10:02 PM Tom_L: figured out the line wasn't plugged all the way in and wasn't getting to the tip
10:02 PM rue_mohr: there needed to be more time between the opening of the gas and the start of the weld
10:02 PM rue_mohr: hmm
10:03 PM rue_mohr: I have a mig thats just got flux core
10:03 PM rue_mohr: wow does flux core mig ever suck
10:03 PM Tom_L: mine does both
10:03 PM Tom_L: sure does
10:03 PM rue_mohr: mmm
10:03 PM Tom_L: spatters all over the place
10:03 PM rue_mohr: yea
10:03 PM Tom_L: reverse polarity for flux core
10:04 PM rue_mohr: ? oh
10:04 PM Tom_L: i forget which is which
10:04 PM rue_mohr: I didn't even think to see if it was AC or DC
10:04 PM Tom_L: but yeah
10:04 PM rue_mohr: I have a dead one too
10:04 PM rue_mohr: aluminum wound transformer
10:04 PM rue_mohr: :D
10:05 PM Tom_L: If you are using a MIG/Flux core welding machine for your flux core welds, you should pay attention to polarity. Nearly all welders have, by default, set DCEP (electrode positive) polarity, which is suitable for MIG welding. Meanwhile, the flux core requires DCEN (electrode negative) or straight polarity.
10:05 PM rue_mohr: oh shielding gas, argon or co2?
10:05 PM Tom_L: co2 is cheaper
10:05 PM Tom_L: pure argon for aluminum
10:05 PM Tom_L: tri mix for steel
10:05 PM rue_mohr: both ok for steel?
10:05 PM rue_mohr: hmm
10:06 PM Tom_L: argon costs more
10:06 PM rue_mohr: not sure what the scrounged tanks I have are
10:06 PM Tom_L: i had a tank and now just use tri mix since i mostly weld steel when i get it out
10:06 PM rue_mohr: I think I use argon with the tig
10:06 PM rue_mohr: so that must be an argon tank
10:07 PM Tom_L: mine have sat so long they probably need a re'cert
10:07 PM rue_mohr: oh yea
10:07 PM rue_mohr: they just trade them here
10:07 PM Tom_L: same here on these
10:07 PM Tom_L: they're small but i dunno what size
10:07 PM rue_mohr: hmm
10:08 PM rue_mohr: they have some acytelene tanks at work that are not gonna get used
10:08 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Mill_Steel/Welding/Miller.jpg
10:08 PM rue_mohr: was asking if anyone wanted them
10:08 PM Tom_L: short tank on the back of that
10:08 PM rue_mohr: I never did use acytelene, just propane
10:08 PM Tom_L: i've done acytelene torch welding
10:08 PM Tom_L: and brazing
10:09 PM rue_mohr: kinda dangerous stuff
10:09 PM Tom_L: seems so
10:09 PM rue_mohr: if I was gonna use it up in "1 sitting" I'd be ok with it
10:09 PM rue_mohr: but I need oxygen more
10:09 PM rue_mohr: oxy-propane
10:09 PM rue_mohr: not for flame welding, but brazing
10:10 PM Tom_L: i wasn't aware of the dangers way back when i was doing it
10:10 PM rue_mohr: I wonder if I got a tank of oxy with that other stuff...
10:11 PM rue_mohr: hmm
10:11 PM rue_mohr: not even sure what I'd braze if I had it ready to go
